This study investigates how a 12-month economic mobility intervention, Mothers Mobility Program (MMP), in Charlotte, NC, fosters usable social capital among single mothers facing systemic, financial, and personal stressors often associated with complex trauma. Using Braun and Clarke's (2006) Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), our interdisciplinary team conducted and analyzed interviews with a subgroup of 20 program mothers (ages 19-44) from six cohorts (N = 70) who completed MMP between 2021 and 2024. The analysis revealed the formation of bonding and bridging social capital among participants. These processes were sequenced and interdependent: bonding ties, fostered through program offerings and identity-affirming spaces, first created trust and safety, which then enabled bridging connections to external resources. Shared staff-client identities influenced engagement, but structural barriers limited the usability of newly formed networks. This study enhances social capital theory by detailing how single mothers experiencing chronic trauma develop, access, and utilize social resources within program settings, along with the program components that support these processes. When place-based programs intentionally sequence bonding before bridging, provide identity-affirming supports, and align external resources with community strengths, these processes become mutually reinforcing. Shared staff identity fosters trust and accelerates engagement, but structural barriers shape whether new connections translate into tangible benefits. Without this integrated strategy and attention to sequencing, efforts to build sustainable social capital and promote community resilience may be less effective in contexts of persistent inequities.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a powerful vertebrate model organism with strong genetic and physiological similarity to humans, yet its use in large-scale transcriptomic research remains constrained by incomplete gene annotations, inefficient ribodepletion methods, and limited transcript-level resolution. To tackle these challenges, we applied CapTrap-seq, a platform-agnostic long-read RNA sequencing approach combining cap-trapping with oligo(dT) priming to selectively capture 5'-capped, full-length transcripts, to zebrafish developmental stages and adult tissues. We further introduce a size-selection step that substantially improves recovery of longer RNA molecules without compromising quantitative accuracy. Benchmarking against the template-switching oligo (TSO) approach demonstrated that CapTrap-seq enables accurate and reproducible transcript reconstruction in a non-mammalian system without requiring external ribodepletion or validation resources. Comparative analysis across multiple long-read catalogues showed that CapTrap-seq detected the largest number of biologically and clinically relevant genes, including oxidative phosphorylation, cardiac, and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) disease genes, while revealing extensive isoform diversity absent from current annotations. Analysis of the carmn and dancr lncRNA loci further demonstrated the ability to resolve complex splicing landscapes, uncovering novel full-length isoforms with distinct domain architectures not represented in existing zebrafish reference annotations. CapTrap-seq thus emerges as a robust, genome-agnostic framework for high-quality transcriptome characterisation in zebrafish and other under-annotated species, with broad implications for functional genomics and translational research.

Family health is an important variable that links internal and external resources at the family level, exerting significant effects on individual health. However, there remains a lack of empirical evidence regarding its potential to mitigate health disparities. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the effect of family health on income-related health disparity in China and analyze the heterogeneous effects of different dimensions of family health across different sub-populations. Using nationally representative data from the 2023-2024 Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents [n = 49,885], we employed health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as a proxy variable for individual health and applied the recentered influence function-index-ordinary least squares model to explore the contributions of family health and its four dimensions to the disparity in HRQoL. Our findings showed that family health had a significantly negative association with the concentration index of health utility index (UI; β = -0.0002, P < 0.05) and EuroQol Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS; β = -0.0006, P < 0.01). Family social or emotional support was negatively associated with EQ-VAS disparity, and family external social support significantly contributed to lower UI disparity. However, family health resources were positively associated with the disparity in UI and EQ-VAS. Heterogeneity analysis revealed more pronounced effects of family health in mitigating health disparity among females, young populations, and urban residents. This study emphasizes the importance of alleviating health disparities through family health improvement. In addition, the study findings demonstrate the necessity of reshaping resource allocation at the family level-balancing external supply and internal equity of families among different subgroups-and accelerating the distribution of high-quality medical resources to economically disadvantaged areas.

Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) experience a heightened risk of HIV acquisition due to barriers to HIV prevention, specifically connected to a lack of comfort in discussing sexual identity and practices with healthcare providers (HCPs). Decision-aid tools that support communication and shared decision-making may improve both access to and uptake of numerous HIV prevention modalities among SGMY. The study aimed to inform the decision-making process of HIV prevention modalities for HCPs and SGMY, providing key information about HIV prevention modalities with PrEPChoices, a web-based decision aid tool. Our study recruited two participant groups, HCPs (N = 15) and SGMY (N = 18). Eligible HCPs held a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Nurse Practitioner (NP), or Physician Assistant/Associate (PA) degree, were licensed to prescribe medications in at least one United States state, had provided care to patients aged 15 to 24 within the past month, and were 18 years of age or older. Eligible SGMY were assigned male sex at birth, reported sexual attraction to and/or sexual behavior with cisgender men or transgender women in the past six months, and were 15 to 24 years of age. Participants completed a semi-structured Webex interview focused on the clarity and relevance, presentation and usability, and application of PrEPChoices, a web-based decision aid tool to support HIV prevention modalities selection among HCPs and SGMY. Interview transcripts were coded using an iteratively developed codebook. Findings were thematically analyzed within a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis framework. Thirty-three participants enrolled (N = 33), including 15 HCPs and 18 SGMY. Strengths included: (1) support for HIV prevention-based decision making; (2) utilization of the filtering tool to select preferred HIV prevention modalities; and (3) intuitive website design. Weaknesses included: (1) gaps in needs and literacy levels between HCPs and SGMY; (2) limited visual design appeal and inclusive representation; and (3) limited in-tool features for comparing HIV prevention modalities. Opportunities included: (1) potential for multimodal dissemination; and (2) expanding external resources provided. Threats included: (1) challenge of integrating PrEPChoices into clinical practices; and (2) ability to stand out compared to other online HIV prevention education resources. HCPs and SGMY highlight the value of PrEPChoices as a web-based decision aid tool to enhance HIV prevention modality selection among SGMY. Our results emphasize the critical role PrEPChoices can play in reducing barriers to sexual health education among SGMY, improving the patient-provider relationship with the PrEP landscape, and strengthening HIV prevention among SGMY.

ABSTRACT Amid the digital transformation of global trade, understanding how resource-constrained creative firms navigate international expansion is increasingly vital. Drawing on resource orchestration theory, this study examines how internal strategic capabilities and external institutional resources influence the international performance of Taiwanese cultural and creative firms, while accounting for diverse cross-border entry modes. Analysis of 153 firms using structural equation modeling reveals that innovation capability emerges as the sole significant driver of international performance, underscoring its role as a critical resource-bundling mechanism for creative firms. Conversely, digital capability, government support, and relationship networks exhibit no significant direct effects. For these micro-sized creative firms, resource constraints necessitate prioritizing product uniqueness to attract international buyers. Furthermore, widespread digital platform adoption has fostered technological homogeneity, shifted the role of trade support systems, and blurred business-to-business/business-to-consumer boundaries. These findings offer critical implications for policy formulation and strategic management within the creative industry.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous disease-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), yet many potential disease-SNP associations remain undiscovered due to the high dimensionality and sparsity of genomic data. Computational approaches that integrate biological network information can complement existing GWAS resources by prioritizing candidate disease-associated SNPs for downstream investigation. In this study, we propose DeepDisSNP, a deep learning framework for disease-SNP association prediction that integrates disease similarity networks and chromosome-specific SNP linkage disequilibrium (LD) networks through graph attention network (GAT)-based representation learning. Disease similarity networks were constructed from MeSH-based disease relationships, while SNP LD networks were generated from Phase 1 and Phase 3 datasets of the 1000 Genomes Project under multiple LD thresholds. DeepDisSNP independently learns disease and SNP embeddings using weighted GAT encoders and subsequently predicts disease-SNP associations using a multilayer perceptron classifier. Extensive experiments across all 22 autosomal chromosomes demonstrated that DeepDisSNP consistently outperformed the state-of-the-art DisSNPNet framework under multiple experimental settings. Under the best-performing configuration, DeepDisSNP achieved AUROC and AUPRC values of approximately 0.96 and 0.95, respectively. Additional analyses demonstrated robustness across LD thresholds, 1000 Genomes Project phases, and increasingly imbalanced negative sampling settings. External GWAS resources, including NHGRI-EBI GWAS Catalog, PhenoScanner, and OpenGWAS, provided supportive biological evidence for many highly ranked predicted associations. Functional enrichment analyses further suggested biological relevance of the predicted SNP-associated genes. Overall, DeepDisSNP provides an effective network-based framework for large-scale disease-SNP association prioritization and may facilitate downstream genomic and translational research.

BackgroundMeningioma, the most prevalent brain tumor in adults, is predominantly benign and often treated with radiotherapy and/or surgery, generally with positive treatment outcomes. Radiotherapy can be administered using either conventional radiotherapy (CRT) or proton beam therapy (PBT). The treatment can cause chronic symptoms such as headache, fatigue, and neurocognitive impairments that can significantly affect daily life. However, there is a lack of research on the long-term consequences of treatment, particularly concerning patients’ own experiences of related symptoms. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the experiences and daily life challenges of individuals at five or more years post-radiotherapy for meningioma.MethodsA qualitative interview study was conducted with 20 participants who were over five years post-treatment and had undergone either PBT or CRT. Using a structured guide with open questions, data were collected through online interviews which were then transcribed verbatim and analyzed using thematic analysis that followed a six-step process described by Braun and Clark.ResultsOf the 20 participants, 17 had received PBT and 3 had undergone CRT, with most having completed their treatment more than six years ago. Two main themes were constructed: “Adjusted life circumstances” and “Reduced autonomy”. Some participants described persistent symptoms such as chronic headaches, cognitive difficulties, and fatigue, which significantly affected their daily lives. Despite these challenges, some patients adapted through establishing new routines, accepting limitations, and altering their perspectives. Reduced autonomy was noted among some, who experienced increased dependence on family, feelings of isolation, and anxiety about tumor recurrence.ConclusionsSome patients experience persistent symptoms and daily challenges even five or more years after radiotherapy for meningioma. Although some participants adapt by utilizing their own internal and external resources, this can lead to isolation and increased dependence on family and partners. Improving the follow-up care of these patients could help in optimize function and address their challenges.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1186/s12883-026-05049-3.

Precise, highly spatial resolution surface pressure measurement is critical for reliable state assessment of unmanned systems, such as the flight safety of unmanned aerial vehicles. Conventionally, the acquisition of such high-resolution data requires dense, expensive sensing arrays or relies on external computational resources. Here, we introduce a flexible electronic skin featuring a sparse sensing network integrated with in-sensor numerical hyperdimensional computing, thereby facilitating super-resolution sensing and in-sensor learning. This innovative approach processes sparse inputs to produce high-resolution pressure field maps on-device, enabling rapid real-time analysis and precise flight state identification. The numerical hyperdimensional computing enhances the efficiency of in-sensor learning, overcoming the limitations of conventional vector symbolic architectures previously confined to classification tasks. Furthermore, the integration of hyperdimensional computing substantially boosts the performance of the flexible sensing skin. Compared to the computer-aided super-resolution method, our approach reduces power consumption from ~40 watts to ~0.09 milliwatts, memory usage from ~2274 to ~32 kilobytes, and latency from ~115 to ~10 milliseconds, respectively. The achieved super-resolution capability reaches an enhancement factor of 5.517. Compared with conventional high-density sensing arrays, our approach reduces the number of interconnects by 91.5% (using a 4 by 4 array). Last, the developed super-resolution skin is applied in unmanned aerial vehicle flight control.

Very low birth weight (VLBW) infants require prompt access to intensive care for survival and optimal outcomes. While Japan manages healthcare through 335 Secondary Medical Areas (SMAs) across 47 prefectures, cross-boundary patient flow remains poorly characterized. We evaluated spatial patterns of admission of VLBW infants within Japan's perinatal system, hypothesizing that cross-boundary hospitalizations follow distinct patterns reflecting structural reliance on external resources. We conducted a retrospective, population-based study using nationwide administrative claims data for VLBW infants born between 2021 and 2023. Spatial indicators, including the localization index and outflow balance, were analyzed alongside travel distances to characterize cross-boundary patient flow and travel burden. Among 12,093 infants, 56% were admitted within their SMA and 92% within their prefecture. Spatial analysis identified distinct regional patterns: SMAs with Comprehensive Perinatal Medical Centers showed high localization indices and inflow, whereas outflow hotspots surrounding Tokyo were identified in populous SMAs without any such centers. Furthermore, northern prefectures exhibited clusters of longer cross-SMA travel distances. Geographical variation in hospitalization revealed structural reliance on external resources and regional inequities in access. Integrating spatial context into perinatal planning provides a fundamental basis for ensuring adequate capacity, thereby fostering a resilient, equitable neonatal care system. Nationwide spatial analysis revealed distinct patterns of cross-boundary hospitalization among very low birth weight infants in Japan, reflecting a structural reliance on external regional resources. This study provides the first population-based visualization of regionalized care reliance, shifting the analytical focus from individual facility performance to system-wide patient flow indicators. The identification of specific regional vulnerabilities-metropolitan resource gaps and northern travel burdens-demonstrates the critical need to integrate spatial context into perinatal healthcare planning.

Technological innovation patterns are fundamental to understanding regional and industrial innovation trajectories. This study proposes a two-dimensional conceptual framework integrating technology sources and attributes to classify regional innovation patterns. Taking the Yangtze River Economic Belt as a case, we examine the characteristics and territorial correlations of these patterns. Results show that the endogenous-generic pattern is concentrated in developed cities, driven by government investment and human capital toward frontier breakthroughs. The endogenous-specialized pattern emerges in subcentral cities, characterized by independent innovation in specific domains. The exogenous-generic pattern suits developing regions pursuing catch-up through technology introduction and local adaptation. The exogenous-specialized pattern prevails in less developed areas, where specialized applications are built on existing industrial bases via external resource integration. These differentiated pathways reflect variations in factor endowments and socioeconomic conditions, with key determinants including government involvement, financial support, human capital, transportation infrastructure, and industrial structure shaping pattern selection. This study extends existing innovation pattern classifications, deepens geographic understanding of regional innovation disparities, and offers an integrated analytical framework for place-based strategies across different territorial contexts.

Innovation serves as the core driving force for the sustainable development of enterprises, and the strategic integration of internal R&D and external innovation resources constitutes a critical foundation for enterprises to enhance their innovation capabilities. This study aims to reveal the interactive mechanism between internal R&D investment and external industry-university-research (IUR) cooperation within enterprises, clarify the path through which the synergy between the two affects innovation output, explore the differential performance of various types of enterprises, and provide theoretical and practical references for the optimization of enterprise innovation strategies and policy formulation. Taking Chinese A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2020 as the research sample, this study constructs a multiple linear regression model to analyze the impact of their synergy effect on innovation output, and introduces enterprise scale and property right nature to conduct heterogeneity tests. The empirical results show that the synergy between increased R&D investment and deepened IUR cooperation exerts a significant positive promoting effect on innovation output, and the integration of the two can amplify the marginal benefit of innovation investment. Moreover, this effect exhibits heterogeneity: large-scale enterprises, relying on their resource integration advantages, and state-owned enterprises, by virtue of policy support and resource endowments, have achieved more substantial innovation improvement through the coordinated interaction of the two. The research indicates that internal R&D and external IUR cooperation are the dual core driving forces for enterprise innovation. Enterprises should expand their IUR cooperation networks and establish a sustainable growth mechanism for R&D investment. At the policy level, it is necessary to take into account the heterogeneous characteristics of enterprises, formulate differentiated support policies, and promote the efficient allocation of innovation resources and the optimization of the innovation ecosystem.

Background/Objectives: Mental health challenges among university students represent a growing public health concern, underscoring the need to understand how psychological resources shape students’ responses to academic stress. Grounded in the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) framework, this study examined how academic demands (time pressure, college life stress, and social comparison) and a key resource (social support) relate to academic burnout and whether these relationships are moderated by self-compassion. Methods: Participants were 323 Korean undergraduates, including 187 traditional students and 136 adult learners. A moderated moderation analysis was conducted using PROCESS Model 3 to examine the interactive effects of learner type, self-compassion, and academic demands/resources on academic burnout. Results: College life stress and social comparison showed robust positive associations with academic burnout, whereas time pressure showed a weaker association. Social support was not directly associated with lower burnout; instead, its protective role emerged only at moderate to high levels of self-compassion. Self-compassion also demonstrated a differentiated moderating effect across learner groups. Among traditional students, higher self-compassion weakened the association between social comparison and burnout. Among adult learners, the relationship between social support and burnout varied according to levels of self-compassion. Conclusions: Self-compassion emerged as a developmentally relevant personal resource associated with differences in how academic demands and resources relate to burnout. These findings suggest that the effectiveness of external resources may depend on individuals’ capacity to interpret and utilize them, highlighting the importance of self-compassion in both theoretical models of academic burnout and targeted mental health interventions in higher education.

Grounded in the Positive Youth Development paradigm, the Developmental Assets Framework identifies internal and external assets—a range of individual and environmental resources (e.g., self-esteem and family support)—that promote healthy development. This study operationalized a subset of 23 assets across adolescence form ages 12 to 17 using data from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (n = 1245; 86% White, 80% French-speaking) to assess developmental trajectories, and associations to mental health and behavior in early adulthood. Growth curve models revealed that external assets at age 12—but not change over time—was associated with depressive symptoms and prosocial behaviors at age 20. In contrast, internal assets’ initial levels and/or changes were associated with depressive symptoms, prosocial and antisocial behaviors, and problematic alcohol use at age 20. These findings highlight the potential long-term influence of youth resources on adult psychosocial functioning. Replication is needed in longitudinal studies using purpose-designed measures of developmental assets.

The aim of the study is to analyze the variables that affect farmers' decisions to adopt the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and to assess its socio-economic advantages. The research investigates the adoption of SRI by examining the internal aspects (attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) and external factors (stimulus and mediation) that are affected by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Stimulus & Mediation methods. A survey was conducted involving 300 farmers in the primary rice-producing districts of Sidrap, Luwu, and Maros. The results demonstrate substantial correlations between these characteristics and the implementation of SRI. Farmers that have a favorable outlook on SRI, motivated by the perceived advantages of higher crop yields, water conservation, and lower production expenses, have a greater willingness to adopt this approach. Furthermore, the involvement of external resources, such as government aid and educational initiatives, is essential in promoting the acceptance and implementation of new practices. The study also emphasizes the socio-economic benefits of adopting SRI, such as increased crop productivity, reduced production expenses, and enhanced access to healthcare and education. Based on these findings, it is recommended that policymakers shift focus from general extension services to establishing community-based demonstration plots to counter social skepticism (negative norms) and ensuring the timely provision of SRI-compatible infrastructure. These actionable measures are critical for overcoming the 'risk-averse' culture and scaling up sustainable agricultural practices.

ABSTRACT Adolescents in residential care often display persistent resistance to educational and therapeutic support, a challenge widely documented but insufficiently understood in terms of how and why youth eventually shift towards engagement. This study aimed to identify forms of resistance, contributing factors, professional responses and the conditions that generate the ‘Click’—a turning point towards engagement in which a young person moves from resistance to greater openness, trust and receptiveness to support. A qualitative descriptive design was implemented across two phases: exploration of resistance patterns and case analysis. The study examined 45 adolescents who experienced a Click. Data were collected in eight centres through semi‐structured interviews with professionals and analysed using mixed inductive–deductive categorical content analysis. Findings revealed four forms of resistance and contributing factors rooted in psychological vulnerability, adverse life history and tensions inherent to institutional living. Professional responses were relational, flexible and individualized rather than standardized. Six groups of factors facilitated the Click, with relational bonds as the main catalyst for change, followed by family dynamics, empowerment, external resources, therapeutic support and inter‐agency collaboration. These results advance understanding of change processes in residential care and position the Click as a relational mechanism linking resistance, motivation and developmental progress.

ABSTRACT This work from the AGORA project is framed within the need to increase the local energy autonomy and resilience of buildings to deal with critical events, such as the blackout of the electricity grid in Spain in 2025. It proposes to energetically renovate the heating system of a university building and to quantify the improvement of autonomy in thermoeconomic terms. The proposed system incorporates a hybrid heat pump with photovoltaic and autonomous control, and is evaluated, including the validated model of the building based on monitoring data. Based on the thermoeconomic results, the new system reduces energy consumption from 28,000 to 10,000 kWhex/year, with a renewable contribution of 36%. The average annual unit cost decreases from 807 to 575 c€/kWhex, and CO2 emissions by 54%. These results confirm an improvement in efficiency, sustainability and energy sovereignty compared to the conventional system. The thermoeconomic approach highlights the adaptation of the different qualities of each exergy flow and is applicable to achieve energy sovereignty of buildings, to minimize the dependence on external resources and to favour local consumption. Furthermore, these applications implemented in renewable technologies allow the sustainability of systems to be assessed, contributing to a wider energy transition and climate change mitigation.

Background: Providing effective peer feedback is a challenge in nursing education. While Generative AI (GenAI) can assist, students often struggle with the task. Metacognitive scaffolding may help guide students through this complex process. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a metacognitive scaffolding-based GenAI-assisted peer feedback provision (MGPFP) approach on nursing students' feedback engagement and behavioral patterns. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 71 nursing students. The experimental group (n = 35) used the MGPFP approach, while the control group (n = 36) used a standard GenAI-assisted approach without scaffolding. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare feedback engagement. Lag sequential analysis was used to examine feedback giving behavior patterns based on coded video data. Results: The experimental group reported significantly higher engagement than the control group across four dimensions: behavioral, cognitive, social, and emotional engagement. The experimental group generated 5219 coded behaviors, while the control group generated 1861. In the experimental group, common behaviors included referring external resources (19.58%), comparing and making judgements (17.80%), and recognizing the purpose (15.77%). Non-feedback behaviors were much higher in the control group (2.69%). Lag sequential analysis identified 17 significant sequences in the experimental group and 14 in the control group. Conclusions: Integrating metacognitive scaffolding into GenAI-assisted peer feedback can improve nursing students' engagement and promote more productive and structured feedback behaviors. This approach is a valuable strategy for enhancing the quality of peer feedback in nursing education.

Purpose This study aims to investigate how external resources, specifically social capital and government support, influence sustainable performance in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam, an emerging economy. Drawing on social capital theory (SCT) and dynamic capabilities theory (DCT), the study examines the direct effects of relational and institutional resources on internal capabilities, including absorptive capacity, digital transformation and green innovation that drive sustainable performance. Design/methodology/approach The study uses survey data collected from 439 SMEs operating in Vietnam’s Southern Key Economic Zone. The proposed research model was analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. Findings The results show that social capital has a significant positive effect on absorptive capacity, digital transformation and sustainable performance. Government support positively influences green innovation and sustainable performance, although it does not directly affect digital transformation. While digital transformation is a powerful driver of sustainability, green innovation shows no significant direct impact, indicating an implementation gap common in transitional markets. Absorptive capacity also significantly promotes green innovation; however, its direct effect on sustainable performance is not statistically significant. Originality/value This study offers a novel integrated theoretical explanation of how social capital and government support are transformed into sustainable performance through dynamic capabilities. By combining SCT and DCT in an emerging-economy context, the research provides new insights into the differentiated roles of absorptive capacity, digital transformation and green innovation. It also identifies digital transformation as a key mechanism for achieving sustainability.
