This case study presents an investigation on existing metro station deformation characteristics during T-type expansion in Nanjing, China. A three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element model is adopted to consider the interaction of soil, retaining structure, horizontal support system and existing station structure. The results indicate that coupling deformation of asymmetric uplift deflection and existing structure rotation occurs on existing structure. Moreover, the sensitivity of influencing factors is analyzed, including the dimension of retaining structure, the support spacing, the excavation method, the soil reinforcement depth in passive area, the width of retaining soil during excavation, the relative position between foundation pit and existing structure, the excavation depth, the existing structure rigidity. Furthermore, based on the analysis of difficulties in the T-shape expansion projects, the controlling measures for the deformation of existing metro station are proposed. The achievements of this case study can be used as a reference for similar underground expansion projects.
