Relaxation dynamics of higher excited states of perylene-substituted perylene bisimide derivatives.

Stepwise two-photon absorption processes have received considerable attention, especially in photocatalysis, due to their relatively lower power threshold, characteristic spatial selectivity, amplification of chemical reactions, and so on. Meanwhile, studies on the relaxation dynamics of higher excited states in condensed systems have been limited for several molecular systems due to the short-lived nature of these states. In this study, we synthesized perylene-substituted perylene bisimide (PBI) and its derivate as model compounds and investigated their excited-state dynamics, including higher excited states, using pump-repump-probe spectroscopy. We revealed that these molecules form charge-transfer (CT) states instantaneously after the excitation, regardless of whether it is the perylene moiety or the PBI moiety that is excited. The lifetime of the CT state was shorter when the distance between the donor (perylene) and the acceptor (PBI) was shorter. Moreover, we also revealed that a higher-lying CT state generated by the stepwise excitation of the CT state using a 740-nm pulse induced Stark effect to the neighboring perylene moiety. The Stark effect not only gives more detailed information about the CT state, but also presents the possibility of new photofunctions, such as instantaneous modulation of the electronic state to achieve optimal electronic properties. These insights contribute to understanding advanced photochemical reactions and would be important for exploring photocatalytic reactions involving higher excited states.

Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics with subsystem density functional theory: application to crystalline pentacene

In this work, we report the development and assessment of the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics approach with the electronic structure calculations based on the linearly scaling subsystem density functional method. The approach is implemented in an open-source embedded Quantum Espresso/Libra software specially designed for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations in extended systems. As proof of the applicability of this method to large condensed-matter systems, we examine the dynamics of nonradiative relaxation of excess excitation energy in pentacene crystals with the simulation supercells containing more than 600 atoms. We find that increased structural disorder observed in larger supercell models induces larger nonadiabatic couplings of electronic states and accelerates the relaxation dynamics of excited states. We conduct a comparative analysis of several quantum-classical trajectory surface hopping schemes, including two new methods proposed in this work (revised decoherence-induced surface hopping and instantaneous decoherence at frustrated hops). Most of the tested schemes suggest fast energy relaxation occurring with the timescales in the 0.7–2.0 ps range, but they significantly overestimate the ground state recovery rates. Only the modified simplified decay of mixing approach yields a notably slower relaxation timescales of 8–14 ps, with a significantly inhibited ground state recovery.

Evidence of Excited-State Vibrational Mode Governing the Photorelaxation of a Charge-Transfer Complex.

Modern, nonlinear, time-resolved spectroscopic techniques have opened new doors for investigating the intriguing but complex world of photoinduced ultrafast out-of-equilibrium phenomena and charge dynamics. The interaction between light and matter introduces an additional dimension, where the complex interplay between electronic and vibrational dynamics needs the most advanced theoretical-computational protocols to be fully understood on the molecular scale. In this study, we showcase the capabilities of ab initio molecular dynamics simulation integrated with a multiresolution wavelet protocol to carefully investigate the excited-state relaxation dynamics in a noncovalent complex involving tetramethylbenzene (TMB) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) undergoing charge transfer (CT) upon photoexcitation. Our protocol provides an accurate description that facilitates a direct comparison between transient vibrational analysis and time-resolved spectroscopic signals. This molecular level perspective enhances our understanding of photorelaxation processes confined in the adiabatic regime and offers an improved interpretation of vibrational spectra. Furthermore, it enables the quantification of anharmonic vibrational couplings between high- and low-frequency modes, specifically the TCNQ "rocking" and "bending" modes. Additionally, it identifies the primary vibrational mode that governs the adiabaticity between the ground state and the CT state. This comprehensive understanding of photorelaxation processes holds significant importance in the rational design and precise control of more efficient photovoltaic and sensor devices.

Ultrafast excited state relaxation dynamics of pyran-based D-π-A systems: solvent polarity controls the triplet state.

The excited state relaxation dynamics of V-shaped D-π-A systems having 4H-pyranylidene appended barbituric acid as an acceptor and diphenylamine (TPAPBA) and diethyl amine (EAPBA) as donors were investigated using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy along with theoretical optimization. The steady-state photophysical characterization exhibited the bathochromic shift of the emission maximum (∼6400 cm-1) and large change in the dipole moment (∼24D) with an increase of solvent polarity, reflecting the occurrence of the intramolecular charge transfer state (ICT) in the excited state. The nanosecond and femtosecond transient absorption spectra of these derivatives in a non-polar solvent, toluene, reveal that the excited state relaxation pathway involving a local excited state (LE) decayed to ICT followed by the formation of a twisted ICT state by conformational relaxation, finally leading to the triplet state. The lack of observation of a triplet state in the polar solvent, acetonitrile, signifies that the relaxation dynamics of V-shaped triads in the excited state are influenced by the polarity of the solvent.

Manipulating Lone-Pair-Driven Luminescence in 0D Tin Halides by Pressure-Tuned Stereochemical Activity from Static to Dynamic.

The excellent luminescence properties and structural dynamics driven by the stereoactivity of the lone pair in a variety of low-dimensional ns2 metal halides have attracted growing investigations for optoelectronic applications. However, the structural and photophysical aspects of the excited state associated with the lone pair expression are currently open questions. Herein, zero-dimensional Sn-based halides with static stereoactive 5 s2 lone pairs are selected as a model system to understand the correlations between the distinctive lone pair expression and the excited-state structural relaxation and charge carrier dynamics by continuous lattice manipulation. Lattice compression drives 5 s2 lone pair active switching and self-trapped exciton (STE) redistribution by suppressing excited-state structural deformation of the isolated SnBr4 2- units. Our results demonstrate that the static expression of the 5 s2 lone pair results in a red broadband triplet STE emission with a large Stokes shift, while its dynamic expression creates a sky-blue narrowband emission dominated by the radiative recombination of singlet STEs. Our findings and the photophysical mechanism proposed highlight the stereochemical effects of lone pair expression in controlling light emission properties and offer constructive guidelines for tuning the optoelectronic properties in diverse ns2 metal halides.

Quantifying the Relaxation Dynamics of Higher Electronic Excited States in Perylene.

Gating logical operations through high-lying electronic excited states presents opportunities for developing ultrafast, subnanometer computational devices. A lack of molecular systems with sufficiently long-lived higher excited states has hindered practical realization of such devices, but recent studies have reported intriguing photophysics from high-lying excited states of perylene. In this work, we use femtosecond spectroscopy supported by quantum chemical calculations to identify and quantify the relaxation dynamics of monomeric perylene's higher electronic excited states. The 21B2u state is accessed through single-photon absorption at 250 nm, while the optically dark 21Ag state is excited via the 11B3u state. Population of either state results in subpicosecond relaxation to the 11B3u state, and we quantify 21Ag and 21B2u state lifetimes of 340 and 530 fs, respectively. These lifetimes are significantly longer than the singlet fission time constant from the perylene 21B2u state, suggesting that the higher electronic states of perylene may be useful for gating logical operations.

Building Blocks and COFs Formed in Concert-Three-Component Synthesis of Pyrene-Fused Azaacene Covalent Organic Framework in the Bulk and as Films.

A three-component synthesis methodology is described for the formation of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) containing extended aromatics. Notably, this approach enables synthesis of the building blocks and COF along parallel reaction landscapes, on a similar timeframe. The use of fragmental building block components, namely pyrene dione diboronic acid as aggregation-inducing COF precursor and the diamines o-phenylenediamine (Ph), 2,3-diaminonaphthalene (Naph), or (1R,2R)-(+)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine (2Ph) as extending functionalization units in conjunction with 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene, resulted in the formation of the corresponding pyrene-fused azaacene, i.e., Aza-COF series with full conversion of the dione moiety, long-range order, and high surface area. In addition, the novel three-component synthesis was successfully applied to produce highly crystalline, oriented thin films of the Aza-COFs with nanostructured surfaces on various substrates. The Aza-COFs exhibit light absorption maxima in the blue spectral region, and each Aza-COF presents a distinct photoluminescence profile. Transient absorption measurements of Aza-Ph- and Aza-Naph-COFs suggest ultrafast relaxation dynamics of excited-states within these COFs.

Theoretical Study on Thermal Structural Fluctuation Effects of Intermolecular Configurations on Singlet Fission in Pentacene Crystal Models.

Singlet fission (SF) occurs as a result of complex excited state relaxation dynamics in molecular aggregates, where a singlet exciton (FE) state is converted into a double-triplet exciton (TT) state through the interactions with several other degrees of freedom, such as nuclear motions. In this study, we combined quantum dynamics simulation based on the quantum master equation approach with all-atom-based classical molecular mechanics/molecular dynamics to examine the thermal structural fluctuation (i.e., static disorder) effects of intermolecular configuration on SF in pentacene crystal models. In particular, we considered two types of static-disordered models, in which excited states are assumed to interact with nuclear motions of intermolecular modes in the classical mechanical/statistical manner. We found that the introduction of static disorder effects leads to a faster decay of coherence between the FE and charge transfer (CT) states in the early stage of SF, contributing to the accelerations of several FE → TT relaxation pathways. Such acceleration in these models is shown to be attributed to fluctuations in the energies and electronic coupling of the CT states based on relative relaxation factor analysis. The present study is expected to contribute to further development of bottom-up materials design for efficient SF in condensed phases where the exitonic system interacts with nuclear motions in various coupling strengths.

Excited-State Dynamics in Borylated Arylisoquinoline Complexes in Solution and in cellulo.

Two four-coordinate organoboron N,C-chelate complexes with different functional terminals on the PEG chains are studied with respect to their photophysical properties within human MCF-7 cells. Their excited-state properties are characterized by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime microscopy. The excited-state relaxation dynamics of the two complexes are similar when studied in DMSO. Aggregation of the complexes with the carboxylate terminal group is observed in water. When studying the light-driven excited-state dynamics of both complexes in cellulo, i. e., after being taken up into human MCF-7 cells, both complexes show different features depending on the nature of the anchoring PEG chains. The lifetime of a characteristic intramolecular charge-transfer state is significantly shorter when studied in cellulo (360±170 ps) as compared to in DMSO (∼960 ps) at 600 nm for the complexes with an amino group. However, the kinetics of the complexes with the carboxylate group are in line with those recorded in DMSO. On the other hand, the lifetimes of the fluorescent state are almost identical for both complexes in cellulo. These findings underline the importance to evaluate the excited-state properties of fluorophores in a complex biological environment in order to fully account for intra- and intermolecular effects governing the light-induced processes in functional dyes.

Relaxation dynamics of high-energy excited states of carotenoids studied by UV excitation and pump-repump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy.

The excited states of carotenoids have been a subject of numerous studies. While a majority of these reports target the excited state dynamics initiated by the excitation of the S2 state, the upper excited state(s) absorbing in the UV spectral region (denoted as SUV) has been only scarcely studied. Moreover, the relation between the SUV and Sn, the final state of the well-known S1-Sn transition of carotenoids, remains unknown. To address this yet-unresolved issue, we compared the excited state dynamics of two carotenoids, namely, β-carotene and astaxanthin, after excitation of either the SUV or Sn state. The SUV state was excited directly by UV light, and the excitation of the Sn state was achieved via re-pumping the S1-Sn transition. The results indicated that direct SUV excitation produces an S1-Sn band that is significantly broader than that obtained after S2 excitation, most probably due to the generation of multiple S1 conformations produced by excess energy. No such broadening is observed if the Sn state is excited by the re-pump pulse. This shows that the Sn and SUV states are different, each initializing a specific relaxation pathway. We propose that the Sn state retains the coupled triplet pair character of the S1 state, while the SUV state is the higher state of Bu+ symmetry accessible by one-photon transition.

Molecular torsion controls the excited state relaxation pathways of multibranched tetraphenylpyrazines: effect of substitution of morpholine vs. phenoxazine.

Multibranched donor-acceptor derivatives exhibiting desirable photophysical properties are efficiently used in optoelectronic devices, in which the excited state relaxation dynamics of the derivatives control the efficiency of the devices. Here, the effect of intramolecular torsion on the excited state relaxation dynamics of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP) derivatives in non-polar (toluene) and polar (THF) solvents is investigated by substituting the electron donor of morpholine (TPP-4MOP) and phenoxazine (TPP-4PHO) leading to the planar and twisted configurations, respectively, using femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. In the steady state, TPP-4MOP showed feeble emission (ΦF ∼0.03) due to the weak donor by the delocalization of electron density supported by theoretical optimization. The TPP-4PHO exhibited strong emission (ΦF ∼0.18) in toluene compared to that in THF, in which it showed a large Stokes shift (∼9691 cm-1) with low fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF ∼0.01). The observation of large Stokes shifts, inherent nature and theoretical calculations of TPP-4PHO suggest the twisting of the dihedral angle between tetraphenylpyrazine and phenoxazine in the excited state leading to the twisted intramolecular charge transfer state (TICT). The femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption and picosecond time-resolved emission spectra of TPP-4PHO revealed the signature of the existence of both the partial TICT and TICT states in THF leading to the triplet state. Whereas in the case of TPP-4MOP, the transient absorption spectra showed the formation of the triplet state from the local excited state without the involvement of the TICT state. Aggregation studies of TPP-4PHO in a THF and water mixture reflect the elimination of the TICT state by the restriction of intramolecular torsion in the aggregates leading to an increase of 12-fold of the fluorescence intensity along with shifting of the maximum towards the blue region. These studies revealed that the excited state relaxation pathways of the derivatives are controlled by polarity-dependent torsional motion.

Experimental and computational insights into luminescence in atomically precise bimetallic Au6-nCun(MPA)5 (n = 0-2) clusters.

Bimetallic nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a new class of luminescent materials for potential applications in sensing, bio-imaging, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, we have synthesized gold-copper bimetallic nanoclusters (AuCu NCs) using a one-step co-reduction method and tuned the emission wavelength from 520 nm to 620 nm by changing the [Cu2+]/[Au3+] molar ratio. The quantum yield (QY) increases from 6% to 13% upon incorporation of the Cu atom in the Au NCs. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometric analysis reveals that the composition of the Au NCs is Au6(MPA)5, and the bimetallic nanocluster is Au4Cu2(MPA)5, where 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) is used as the capping ligand. Furthermore, we investigated the optimized structures of the as-synthesized NCs using density functional theory (DFT) along with analysis of the preferable adsorption sites using Fukui functions. We report the HOMO-LUMO gap, which is consistent with the experimentally observed red shift in the UV-Vis absorption features of the Au NCs upon copper doping. XPS studies suggest the formation of intermixing of states between the 5d orbitals of Au and the 3d orbitals of Cu in the AuCu NCs after incorporating Cu atoms into the Au NCs, which is corroborated by the DFT calculations on electronic charge transfer from the Cu to the Au atom in the NCs. The coupling between Au(I) and Cu(I) facilitates the formation of a low-lying mixed Au(I)-Cu(I) energy state. This study elaborates on the impact of Cu doping on the excited-state relaxation dynamics of AuCu NCs.

The impact of the chalcogen-substitution element and initial spectroscopic state on excited-state relaxation pathways in nucleobase photosensitizers: a combination of static and dynamic studies.

The substitution of oxygen with chalcogen in carbonyl group(s) of canonical nucleobases gives an impressive triplet generation, enabling their promising applications in medicine and other emerging techniques. The excited-state relaxation S2(ππ*) → S1(nπ*) → T1(ππ*) has been considered the preferred path for triplet generation in these nucleobase derivatives. Here, we demonstrate enhanced quantum efficiency of direct intersystem crossing from S2 to triplet manifold upon substitution with heavier chalcogen elements. The excited-state relaxation dynamics of sulfur/selenium substituted guanines in a vacuum is investigated using a combination of static quantum chemical calculations and on-the-fly excited-state molecular dynamics simulations. We find that in sulfur-substitution the S2 state predominantly decays to the S1 state, while upon selenium-substitution the S2 state deactivation leads to simultaneous population of the S1 and T2,3 states in the same time scale and multi-state quasi-degeneracy region S2/S1/T2,3. Interestingly, the ultrafast deactivation of the spectroscopic S3 state of both studied molecules to the S1 state occurs through a successive S3 → S2 → S1 path involving a multi-state quasi-degeneracy S3/S2/S1. The populated S1 and T2 states will cross the lowest triplet state, and the S1 → T intersystem crossing happens in a multi-state quasi-degeneracy region S1/T2,3/T1 and is accelerated by selenium-substitution. The present study reveals the influence of both the chalcogen substitution element and initial spectroscopic state on the excited-state relaxation mechanism of nucleobase photosensitizers and also highlights the important role of multi-state quasi-degeneracy in mediating the complex relaxation process. These theoretical results provide additional insights into the intrinsic photophysics of nucleobase-based photosensitizers and are helpful for designing novel photo-sensitizers for real applications.

Nonadiabatic Dynamics Studied by Liquid-Jet Time-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

The development of the liquid microjet technique by Faubel and co-workers has enabled the investigation of high vapor pressure liquids and solutions utilizing high-vacuum methods. One such method is photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), which allows one to probe the electronic properties of a sample through ionization in a state-specific manner. Liquid microjets consisting of pure solvents and solute-solvent systems have been studied with great success utilizing PES and, more recently, time-resolved PES (TRPES). Here, we discuss progress made over recent years in understanding the solvation and excited state dynamics of the solvated electron and nucleic acid constituents (NACs) using these methods, as well as the prospect for their future.The solvated electron is of particular interest in liquid microjet experiments as it represents the simplest solute system. Despite this simplicity, there were still many unresolved questions about its binding energy and excited state relaxation dynamics that are ideal problems for liquid microjet PES. In the work discussed in this Account, accurate binding energies were measured for the solvated electron in multiple high vapor pressure solvents. The advantages of liquid jet PES were further highlighted in the femtosecond excited state relaxation studies on the solvated electron in water where a 75 ± 20 fs lifetime attributable to internal conversion from the excited p-state to a hot ground state was measured, supporting a nonadiabatic relaxation mechanism.Nucleic acid constituents represent a class of important solutes with several unresolved questions that the liquid microjet PES method is uniquely suited to address. As TRPES is capable of tracking dynamics with state-specificity, it is ideal for instances where there are multiple excited states potentially involved in the dynamics. Time-resolved studies of NAC relaxation after excitation using ultraviolet light identified relaxation lifetimes from multiple excited states. The state-specific nature of the TRPES method allowed us to identify the lack of any signal attributable to the 1nπ* state in thymine derived NACs. The femtosecond time resolution of the technique also aided in identifying differences between the excited state lifetimes of thymidine and thymidine monophosphate. These have been interpreted, aided by molecular dynamics simulations, as an influence of conformational differences leading to a longer excited state lifetime in thymidine monophosphate.Finally, we discuss advances in tabletop light sources extending into the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray regimes that allow expansion of liquid jet TRPES to full valence band and potentially core level studies of solutes and pure liquids in liquid microjets. As most solutes have ground state binding energies in the range of 10 eV, observation of both excited state decay and ground state recovery using ultraviolet pump-ultraviolet probe TRPES has been intractable. With high-harmonic generation light sources, it will be possible to not only observe complete relaxation pathways for valence level dynamics but to also track dynamics with element specificity by probing core levels of the solute of interest.

Shape influence on the ultrafast plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticles.

The aim of shape-controlled colloidal synthesis of gold (Au) is to produce Au nanoparticles (NPs) with fine control of shapes, sizes, and dispersities. We show how transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) can be used to rapidly and accurately quantify the vast ensemble of shapes of Au NPs in solution within minutes, including the synthesized nanorods, decahedra, and nanospheres. Colloidal solutions containing Au NPs were measured in TAS and their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes were classified according to the shape, wavelength and number of peaks. Then their excited-state relaxation dynamics were used to ascertain their electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling time constant and frequency of optomechanical modes. TAS can quickly show that an Au nanosphere sample contains a tiny fraction of Au nanorods, whereas steady-state absorbance is totally blind to the presence of nanorods. Additionally, the TAS experiments indicate that the characteristic e-ph coupling time constants in Au nanorods depend on the NPs dimensions at high excitation intensity (> 6 µJ/cm2) which can help identify if there are any elongated Au NPs in Au spheres samples. Finally, optomechanical oscillations formed by NPs breathing modes were observed, providing information related to the average size and monodispersity of Au nanospheres and nanorods.

Unraveling the Effect of Single Atom Doping on the Carrier Relaxation Dynamics of MAg24n- Nanoclusters.

Precisely doped metal nanoclusters (NCs) are currently emerging nanomaterials for their unique photophysical properties. Here, we report the influence of single atom doping on the excited state relaxation dynamics of a series of MAg24(2,4-Me2PhS)18n- NCs where M is Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt. The NCs with a group 11 metal (Ag and Au) as central atoms exhibit dual emission at NIR and visible range, whereas it shows only NIR emission for group 10 metal (Pd and Pt) doped NCs. Global target analyses of transient absorption (TA) data reveal the three-state relaxation, i.e., initially excited state (Sn), ligand-centered charge transfer (CT) state (SL), and metal-centered lowest excited state (S1). Apart from the HOMO-LUMO (H-L) energy gap, the electron affinity of the central metal atom and rigidity of the NC structural framework influence the relaxation processes of the NCs. The extensive study into the relaxation dynamics will bestow the single atomic level modulation of photophysical properties.

Ultrafast Intermolecular Interaction Dynamics between NIR-Absorbing Unsymmetrical Squaraines and PCBM: Effects of Halogen Substitution.

Among near-infrared (NIR) dyes, squaraine derivatives are applied as efficient sensitizers in optoelectronic and biomedical devices due to their simple synthesis, intense absorption, and emission and exceptional photochemical stability. The fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships of sensitizers provides the insight to increase the efficiency of such devices. Here, unsymmetrical squaraine derivatives (ABSQs) with donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D') architectures having N,N-dimethyl amino anthracene and benzothiazole (ABSQ-H) halogenated with fluoride (ABSQ-F), chloride (ABSQ-Cl), and bromide (ABSQ-Br) were synthesized to understand the effect of halogen on the photophysical properties and intermolecular interaction dynamics with phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), which is used widely as an electron acceptor in bulk heterojunction-based devices. Interestingly, ABSQ-H exhibited intense absorption (ε ∼ 6.72 × 104 M-1 cm-1) spectra centered at ∼660 nm. Upon halogen substitution, a bathochromic shift in the absorption spectra with an increase of molar absorptivity was observed (ε ∼ 8.59 × 104 M-1 cm-1), which is beneficial for NIR light harvesting. The femtosecond transient absorption spectra of ABSQs revealed that the polarity of the solvent controlled the excited-state relaxation dynamics. Upon addition of PCBM, the fluorescence intensity and dynamics of halogenated ABSQs were quenched, and the formation of a squaraine radical cation was observed, reflecting the occurrence of intermolecular charge-transfer dynamics between ABSQs and PCBM. Thus, the observation of a bathochromic shift with intense absorption and an efficient intermolecular interaction with PCBM upon halogenation of ABSQs provide a design strategy for the development of unsymmetrical squaraine derivatives for bulk heterojunction-based optoelectronic devices.

Unravelling the ultrafast dynamics of a N-BODIPY compound

Although the photophysics of BODIPY compounds has been widely investigated in the last few years, their analogues N-BODIPY, with nitrogen substitution at the boron center, did not receive comparable attention. In this work we report the synthesis and photochemical characterization of a substituted N-BODIPY compound, by means of a combined theoretical and spectroscopic approach. Compared to a standard BODIPY, the compound under investigation presents a lower fluorescence quantum yield (QY) in the visible region. The excited state relaxation dynamics of the dye was studied in different solvents, showing further fluorescence quenching in polar solvents, and excited state decay rates strongly dependent on the environment polarity. The role of the pendant moieties and the involvement of charge transfer states in the excited state dynamics was experimentally addressed by transient absorption spectroscopy, and further analyzed with TD-DFT calculations, which allowed precise assignment of the transient signals to the correspondent electronic configuration. The complete picture of the N-BODIPY behavior shows the presence of both charge transfer and localized states, influencing the observed photophysics to different amounts, depending on the excitation conditions and the surrounding environment.

Ultrafast Solution-Phase Photophysical and Photochemical Dynamics of Hexaiodobismuthate(III), the Heart of Bismuth Halide Perovskite Solar Cells.

The ultrafast relaxation pathways in a hexaiodide bismuth(III) complex, BiI63-, excited at 530 nm in acetonitrile solution are studied by means of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy supported by steady-state absorption/emission measurements and DFT computations. Radiationless relaxation out of the Franck-Condon, largely metal-centered (MC) triply degenerate 3T1u state (46 ± 19 fs), is driven by vibronic coupling due to the Jahn-Teller effect in the excited state. The relaxation populates two lower-energy states: a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) excited state of 3π I(5pπ) → Bi(6p) nature and a luminescent "trap" 3A1u(3P0) MC state. Coherent population transfer from the initial 3T1u into the 3π LMCT state occurs in an oscillatory, stepwise manner at ∼190 and ∼550 fs with a population ratio of ∼4:1. The 3π LMCT state decays with a 2.9 ps lifetime, yielding two short-lived reaction intermediates of which the first one reforms the parent ground state with a 15 ps time constant, and the second one decays on a ∼5 ps timescale generating the triplet product species, which persists to the longest 2 ns delay times investigated. This product is identified as the η2 metal-ligated diiodide-bismuth adduct with the intramolecularly formed I-I bond, [(η2-I2)Bi(II)I4]3-, which is the species of interest for solar energy conversion and storage applications. The lifetime of the "trap" 3A1u state is estimated to be 13 ns from the photoluminescence quenching of BiI63-. The findings give insight into the excited-state relaxation dynamics and the photochemical reaction mechanisms in halide complexes of heavy ns2 metal ions.

Excimer Formation Inhibits the Intramolecular Singlet Fission Dynamics: Systematic Tilting of Pentacene Dimers by Linking Positions.

The role of excimer formation in inhibiting or enhancing the efficiency of the intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) process has been a subject of recent debate. Here, we investigated the effect of excimer formation on iSF dynamics by modifying its configuration by connecting pentacenes at various positions. Hence, pentacene dimers having slip-stacked (2,2' BP, J-type), oblique (2,6' BP), and facial (6,6' BP, H-type) configurations were synthesized by covalently linking pentacenes at positions 2,2', 2,6', and 6,6', respectively, with an ethynyl bridge, and their ultrafast excited-state relaxation dynamics were characterized. Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra revealed that the efficiency of iSF dynamics decreased from slip-stacked (182%) to oblique configuration (97%),whereas in the 6,6' BP with facial configuration, strong electronic coupling led to the formation of excimers that decayed nonradiatively without formation of correlated triplet pairs. These studies reveal the formation of excimers by strong intrapentacene electronic coupling upon ultrafast excitation, preventing the efficient iSF process.
