Nucleosynthesis of an 11.8 M ⊙ Supernova with 3D Simulation of the Inner Ejecta: Overall Yields and Implications for Short-lived Radionuclides in the Early Solar System

Abstract Based on a 3D supernova simulation of an 11.8 M ⊙ progenitor model with an initial solar composition, we study the nucleosynthesis using tracers covering the innermost 0.1 M ⊙ of the ejecta. These ejecta are mostly proton-rich and contribute significant amounts of 45Sc and 64Zn. The production of heavier isotopes is sensitive to the electron fraction and hence the neutrino emission from the proto-neutron star. The yields of these isotopes are rather uncertain due to the approximate neutrino transport used in the simulation. In order to obtain the total yields for the whole supernova, we combine the results from the tracers with those for the outer layers from a suitable 1D model. Using the yields of short-lived radionuclides (SLRs), we explore the possibility that an 11.8 M ⊙ supernova might have triggered the formation of the solar system and provided some of the SLRs measured in meteorites. In particular, we discuss two new scenarios that can account for at least the data on 41Ca, 53Mn, and 60Fe without exceeding those on the other SLRs.

Lunar impact crater identification and age estimation with Chang\u2019E data by deep and transfer learning

Impact craters, which can be considered the lunar equivalent of fossils, are the most dominant lunar surface features and record the history of the Solar System. We address the problem of automatic crater detection and age estimation. From initially small numbers of recognized craters and dated craters, i.e., 7895 and 1411, respectively, we progressively identify new craters and estimate their ages with Chang’E data and stratigraphic information by transfer learning using deep neural networks. This results in the identification of 109,956 new craters, which is more than a dozen times greater than the initial number of recognized craters. The formation systems of 18,996 newly detected craters larger than 8 km are estimated. Here, a new lunar crater database for the mid- and low-latitude regions of the Moon is derived and distributed to the planetary community together with the related data analysis.

Observational Completion Limit of Minor Planets from the Asteroid Belt to Jupiter Trojans

Abstract With the growing numbers of asteroids being discovered, identifying an observationally complete sample is essential for statistical analyses and for informing theoretical models of the dynamical evolution of the solar system. We present an easily implemented method of estimating the empirical observational completeness in absolute magnitude, , as a function of semimajor axis. Our method requires fewer assumptions and decisions to be made in its application, making results more transportable and reproducible among studies that implement it, as well as scalable to much larger data sets of asteroids expected in the next decade with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time. Using the values of (a) determined at high resolution in semimajor axis, a, we demonstrate that the observationally complete sample size of the main belt asteroids is larger by more than a factor of 2 compared with using a conservative single value of , an approach often adopted in previous studies. Additionally, by fitting a simple, physically motivated model of (a) to ∼7 × 105 objects in the Minor Planet Database, our model reveals statistically significant deviations between the main belt and the asteroid populations beyond the main belt (Hungarias, Hildas, and Trojans), suggesting potential demographic differences, such as in their size, eccentricity, or inclination distributions.

Arrival and magnetization of carbonaceous chondrites in the asteroid belt before 4562 million years ago

Meteorite magnetizations can provide rare insight into early Solar System evolution. Such data take on new importance with recognition of the isotopic dichotomy between non-carbonaceous and carbonaceous meteorites, representing distinct inner and outer disk reservoirs, and the likelihood that parent body asteroids were once separated by Jupiter and subsequently mixed. The arrival time of these parent bodies into the main asteroid belt, however, has heretofore been unknown. Herein, we show that weak CV (Vigarano type) and CM (Mighei type) carbonaceous chondrite remanent magnetizations indicate acquisition by the solar wind 4.2 to 4.8 million years after Ca-Al-rich inclusion (CAI) formation at heliocentric distances of ~2–4 AU. These data thus indicate that the CV and CM parent asteroids had arrived near, or within, the orbital range of the present-day asteroid belt from the outer disk isotopic reservoir within the first 5 million years of Solar System history.

Measuring Changes in the Atmospheric Neutrino Rate over Gigayear Timescales.

Measuring the cosmic ray flux over timescales comparable to the age of the Solar System, ∼4.5 Gyr, could provide a new window on the history of the Earth, the Solar System, and even our Galaxy. We present a technique to indirectly measure the rate of cosmic rays as a function of time using the imprints of atmospheric neutrinos in "paleo-detectors," natural minerals that record damage tracks from nuclear recoils. Minerals commonly found on Earth are ≲1 Gyr old, providing the ability to look back across cosmic ray history on timescales of the same order as the age of the Solar System. Given a collection of differently aged samples dated with reasonable accuracy, this technique is particularly well-suited to measuring historical changes in the cosmic ray flux at Earth and is broadly applicable in astrophysics and geophysics.

Losing oceans: The effects of composition on the thermal component of impact-driven atmospheric loss

ABSTRACT The formation of the Solar system’s terrestrial planets concluded with a period of giant impacts. Previous works examining the volatile loss caused by the impact shock in the moon-forming impact find atmospheric losses of at most 20–30 per cent and essentially no loss of oceans. However, giant impacts also result in thermal heating, which can lead to significant atmospheric escape via a Parker-type wind. Here we show that H2O and other high-mean molecular weight outgassed species can be efficiently lost through this thermal wind if present in a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere, substantially altering the final volatile inventory of terrestrial planets. We demonstrate that a giant impact during terrestrial planet formation can remove several Earth oceans’ worth of H2O, and other heavier volatile species, together with a primordial hydrogen-dominated atmosphere. These results may offer an explanation for the observed depletion in Earth’s light noble gas budget and for its depleted xenon inventory, which suggest that Earth underwent significant atmospheric loss by the end of its accretion. Because planetary embryos are massive enough to accrete primordial hydrogen envelopes and because giant impacts are stochastic and occur concurrently with other early atmospheric evolutionary processes, our results suggest a wide diversity in terrestrial planet volatile budgets.

The NC-CC Isotope Dichotomy: Implications for the Chemical and Isotopic Evolution of the Early Solar System

Understanding the formation of our planetary system requires identification of the materials from which it originated and the accretion processes that produced the planets. The compositional evolution of the solar system can be constrained by synthesizing astronomical datasets and numerical models with elemental and isotopic compositions from objects that directly sampled the disk: meteorites and their constituents (chondrules, refractory inclusions, and matrix). This contribution reviews constraints on early solar system evolution provided by the so-called non-carbonaceous (NC) and carbonaceous chondrite (CC) groups and their relationship to the volatile element characteristics of chondritic meteorites. In previous work, the NC or CC character of a parent body was used to infer its accretion location in the protoplanetary disk. The NC groups purportedly originated in the inner disk, and the CC groups were derived from the outer disk, where the NC and CC regions of the disk may have been separated early on by proto-Jupiter, a pressure maximum, or a dust trap in the disk. The tenet that all CC parent bodies accreted in the outer disk is, in part, based on evidence that a handful of CC meteorites are enriched in volatile species compared to NC meteorites. Here, it is reviewed if and how the volatile element and nucleosynthetic isotope compositions of meteorites can be linked to accretion locations within the disk. The nucleosynthetic isotope compositions of whole rock meteorite samples contrast the trends found for their major volatile element compositions (i.e., C, N, and O). Although there may be an increase in volatile abundances when comparing some stony NC and CC meteorites and their inferred accretion locations within the disk, this is not necessarily a general rule. The difficulties with inferring parent body accretion locations are discussed. It is found that it cannot always be assumed that parent bodies which formed in the CC reservoir are volatile-rich relative to those that formed in the NC reservoir which are volatilepoor. Consequently, tracing the origin of terrestrial volatiles using the NC-CC isotope dichotomy remains challenging.

Timing Solar System formation

Cosmochemistry The oldest solids that formed in the Solar System are calcium-aluminium–rich inclusions (CAIs), small metallic droplets that were later incorporated into meteorites. The ages of CAIs are conventionally taken as the age of the Solar System, but which exact moment in star formation they correspond to has been unclear. Brennecka et al. measured molybdenum isotope ratios in CAIs and found a wide range of origins in both the inner and outer Solar System. They propose that CAIs formed from heterogeneous material accreting from the presolar nebula and that the ages of CAIs coincide with the Sun's transition from a protostar to a pre–main sequence star. Astronomical context of Solar System formation from molybdenum isotopes in meteorite inclusions.

Calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) in meteorites are the first solids to have formed in the Solar System, defining the epoch of its birth on an absolute time scale. This provides a link between astronomical observations of star formation and cosmochemical studies of Solar System formation. We show that the distinct molybdenum isotopic compositions of CAIs cover almost the entire compositional range of material that formed in the protoplanetary disk. We propose that CAIs formed while the Sun was in transition from the protostellar to pre-main sequence (T Tauri) phase of star formation, placing Solar System formation within an astronomical context. Our results imply that the bulk of the material that formed the Sun and Solar System accreted within the CAI-forming epoch, which lasted less than 200,000 years.

Sampling the Early Solar System.

Our knowledge of the Solar System has been greatly advanced by exploration with robotic spacecraft, but there are many limitations on the instruments those can carry. More detailed information can be extracted by analyzing samples of Solar System bodies in Earth laboratories. Meteorites provide some natural samples, but the body they came from is often unknown, and they may not represent typical material. Recent years have seen increased interest in directly retrieving samples from other worlds and bringing them back to Earth, a process known as sample return. The most primitive carbonaceous asteroids preserve information about the formation and early evolution of the Solar System and thus have been a high priority for sample return. The Hayabusa mission collected 1500 dust particles from asteroid (25143) Itokawa and returned them to Earth in 2010. A successor mission, Hayabusa2, visited asteroid (162173) Ryugu with the goal of obtaining a larger mass of sample, which is due to arrive on Earth in December 2020. Meanwhile, on 31 December 2018, the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security–Regolith Explorer) spacecraft arrived at another primitive asteroid, (101955) Bennu, with plans to return at least 60 grams of material. Writing in Science and Science Advances , members of the OSIRIS-REx team present results from the survey and reconnaissance phases of the mission. Detailed maps of surface properties were used to identify promising sites for sample collection and provide the necessary scientific context. These data provide information on Bennu's composition, constrain its formation process, and show how its surface evolved. They show that Bennu's surface material has been modified by exposure to space weathering, contains abundant organic material, and has evidence of past alteration by liquid water. OSIRIS-REx successfully collected its sample of Bennu on 20 October 2020; it is due to arrive on Earth in 2023.

Graphite-Based Geothermometry on Almahata Sitta Ureilitic Meteorites.

The thermal history of carbon phases, including graphite and diamond, in the ureilite meteorites has implications for the formation, igneous evolution, and impact disruption of their parent body early in the history of the Solar System. Geothermometry data were obtained by micro-Raman spectroscopy on graphite in Almahata Sitta (AhS) ureilites AhS 72, AhS 209b and AhS A135A from the University of Khartoum collection. In these samples, graphite shows G-band peak centers between 1578 and 1585 cm−1 and the full width at half maximum values correspond to a crystallization temperature of 1266 °C for graphite for AhS 209b, 1242 °C for AhS 72, and 1332 °C for AhS A135A. Recent work on AhS 72 and AhS 209b has shown graphite associated with nanodiamonds and argued that this assemblage formed due to an impact-event. Our samples show disordered graphite with a crystalline domain size ranging between about 70 and 140 nm. The nanometric grain-size of the recrystallized graphite indicates that it records a shock event and thus argues that the temperatures we obtained are related to such an event, rather than the primary igneous processing of the ureilite parent body.

A comparative analysis of the outer-belt primitive families

Context.Asteroid families are witnesses to the intense collisional evolution that occurred on the asteroid belt. The study of the physical properties of family members can provide important information about the state of differentiation of the parent body and provide insights into how these objects were formed. Several of these asteroid families identified across the main belt are dominated by low-albedo, primitive asteroids. These objects are important for the study of Solar System formation because they were subject to weaker thermophysical processing and provide information about the early conditions of our planetary system.Aims.We aim to study the diversity of physical properties among the Themis, Hygiea, Ursula, Veritas, and Lixiaohua families.Methods.We present new spectroscopic data, combined with a comprehensive analysis using a variety of data available in the literature, such as albedo and rotational properties.Results.Our results show that Themis and Hygiea families, the largest families in the region, present similar levels of hydration. Ursula and Lixiaohua families are redder in comparison to the others and present no sign of hydrated members based on the analysis of visible spectra. Conversely, Veritas presents the highest fraction of hydrated members.Conclusions.This work demonstrates a diverse scenario in terms of the physical properties of primitive outer-belt families, which could be associated with dynamical mixing of asteroid populations and the level of differentiation of the parental body.

Spin rates of V-type asteroids

Context. Basaltic V-type asteroids play a crucial role in studies of Solar System evolution and planetesimal formation. Comprehensive studies of their physical, dynamical, and statistical properties provide insight into these processes. Thanks to wide surveys, currently there are numerous known V-type and putative V-type asteroids, allowing a detailed statistical analysis. Aims. Our main goal is to analyze the currently available large sample of V-type spin rates, to find signatures of the non-gravitational Yarkovsky–O’Keefe–Radzievskii–Paddack (YORP) effect among the different V-type populations, and to estimate the spin barrier and critical density for V-type asteroids. Our intention is to increase the pool of information about the intriguing V-types. Methods. We collected rotational periods from the literature for spectrally confirmed V-types, putative V-types, and Vesta family members. Through spectroscopic observations we confirmed their taxonomic type and verified the high confirmation rates of the putative V-types. We combined the collected periods with periods estimated in this manuscript and produced rotational frequency distributions. We determined the spin barrier in the frequency–light curve amplitude space for V-type asteroids. Results. We analyzed rotational periods of 536 asteroids in our sample. As expected, due to the small size of the objects analyzed, the frequency distributions for the Vesta family and the V-types outside the family are inconsistent with a Maxwellian shape. The Vesta family shows an excess of slow-rotators. V-types outside the family show an excess of both slow and fast rotators. Interestingly, we found that the population of V-types outside the Vesta family shows a significant excess of fast rotators compared to the Vesta family. The estimated critical density for V-type asteroids exceeds ρc = 2.0 g cm−3, which surpasses the previous estimates. Conclusions. We demonstrated that V-type asteroids have been influenced by the thermal radiation YORP effect and that their critical spin rate is higher than for C-type asteroids. The population of V-types outside the Vesta family shows a significant excess of fast rotators compared to the Vesta family. We hypothesize that the objects that evolved from the Vesta family though the Yarkovsky drift are also more susceptible to the YORP effect. Objects for which YORP has not yet had enough time to act and those that are more YORP resistant will be left in the family, which explains the relatively small proportion of fast rotators being left. The YORP timescale must thus be similar to the migration timescale for those objects.

Escape and evolution of Titan’s N2 atmosphere constrained by 14N/15N isotope ratios

ABSTRACT We apply a 1D upper atmosphere model to study thermal escape of nitrogen over Titan’s history. Significant thermal escape should have occurred very early for solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) fluxes 100–400 times higher than today with escape rates as high as ≈1.5 × 1028 s−1 and ≈4.5 × 1029 s−1, respectively, while today it is ≈7.5 × 1017 s−1. Depending on whether the Sun originated as a slow, moderate, or fast rotator, thermal escape was the dominant escape process for the first 100–1000 Myr after the formation of the Solar system. If Titan’s atmosphere originated that early, it could have lost between $\approx0.5\,\, \mathrm{ and}\,\, 16$ times its present atmospheric mass depending on the Sun’s rotational evolution. We also investigated the mass-balance parameter space for an outgassing of Titan’s nitrogen through decomposition of NH3-ices in its deep interior. Our study indicates that, if Titan’s atmosphere originated at the beginning, it could have only survived until today if the Sun was a slow rotator. In other cases, the escape would have been too strong for the degassed nitrogen to survive until present day, implying later outgassing or an additional nitrogen source. An endogenic origin of Titan’s nitrogen partially through NH3-ices is consistent with its initial fractionation of 14N/15N ≈ 166–172, or lower if photochemical removal was relevant for longer than the last ≈ 1000 Myr. Since this ratio is slightly above the ratio of cometary ammonia, some of Titan’s nitrogen might have originated from refractory organics.

Evolution of the Earth’s atmosphere during Late Veneer accretion

ABSTRACT Recent advances in our understanding of the dynamical history of the Solar system have altered the inferred bombardment history of the Earth during accretion of the Late Veneer, after the Moon-forming impact. We investigate how the bombardment by planetesimals left-over from the terrestrial planet region after terrestrial planet formation, as well as asteroids and comets, affects the evolution of Earth’s early atmosphere. We develop a new statistical code of stochastic bombardment for atmosphere evolution, combining prescriptions for atmosphere loss and volatile delivery derived from hydrodynamic simulations and theory with results from dynamical modelling of realistic populations of impactors. We find that for an initially Earth-like atmosphere, impacts cause moderate atmospheric erosion with stochastic delivery of large asteroids, giving substantial growth (× 10) in a few ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of cases. The exact change in atmosphere mass is inherently stochastic and dependent on the dynamics of the left-over planetesimals. We also consider the dependence on unknowns including the impactor volatile content, finding that the atmosphere is typically completely stripped by especially dry left-over planetesimals ($\lt 0.02 ~ {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ volatiles). Remarkably, for a wide range of initial atmosphere masses and compositions, the atmosphere converges towards similar final masses and compositions, i.e. initially low-mass atmospheres grow, whereas massive atmospheres deplete. While the final properties are sensitive to the assumed impactor properties, the resulting atmosphere mass is close to that of current Earth. The exception to this is that a large initial atmosphere cannot be eroded to the current mass unless the atmosphere was initially primordial in composition.

Four-billion year stability of the Earth–Mars belt

ABSTRACT Previous work has demonstrated orbital stability for 100 Myr of initially near-circular and coplanar small bodies in a region termed the ‘Earth–Mars belt’ from 1.08 < a < 1.28 au. Via numerical integration of 3000 particles, we studied orbits from 1.04–1.30 au for the age of the Solar system. We show that on this time-scale, except for a few locations where mean-motion resonances with Earth affect stability, only a narrower ‘Earth–Mars belt’ covering a ∼ (1.09, 1.17) au, e < 0.04, and I < 1° has over half of the initial orbits survive for 4.5 Gyr. In addition to mean-motion resonances, we are able to see how the ν3, ν4, and ν6 secular resonances contribute to long-term instability in the outer (1.17–1.30 au) region on Gyr time-scales. We show that all of the (rather small) near-Earth objects (NEOs) in or close to the Earth–Mars belt appear to be consistent with recently arrived transient objects by comparing to a NEO steady-state model. Given the <200 m scale of these NEOs, we estimated the Yarkovsky drift rates in semimajor axis and use these to estimate that a diameter of ∼100 km or larger would allow primordial asteroids in the Earth–Mars belt to likely survive. We conclude that only a few 100-km sized asteroids could have been present in the belt’s region at the end of the terrestrial planet formation.

The formation of H[formula omitted]O and Si-OH by H[formula omitted] irradiation in major minerals of carbonaceous chondrites

As the parent bodies of carbonaceous chondrite (CC) meteorites contain valuable information that will help us better understand the formation and evolution of the early solar system, it is vital to search for them. To date, searching for those parent bodies has been conducted by comparing visible to near-infrared reflectance spectra of CCs with those of small bodies. It is known that the reflectance spectra of small bodies and, more widely, airless planetary bodies can be modified via space weathering. However, the effects of irradiated solar wind protons, which account for 95 % of the solar wind, on the spectra of CC-like materials, are still poorly understood. Here we report on the experimental spectral modification of hydrous silicate minerals due to hydrogen irradiation via simulating the implantation of solar wind protons onto parent bodies of CCs. The samples we used for our experiment were serpentine and saponite, which are two major mineral components of CCs. We irradiated the samples with 10 keV H2+ ions to achieve the estimated saturation level (1.3 to 1.7 × 1018 ions cm−2), and measured their reflectance spectra in the wavelength range from 1.5 to 5.0μm both before and after irradiation. For serpentine, the sample was irradiated step by step, and the reflectance spectra were measured after each irradiation step.After irradiation, we observed changes in the absorption features at 2.77μm and 2.85μm. These changes imply that H2O and Si-OH radicals, respectively, would have been formed by a reaction between the irradiated hydrogen and the hydrous silicate minerals. In this study, spectral modifications due to hydrogen irradiation near 0.7μm and 2.3μm were not observed. This indicates that hydrogen irradiation broke the Si-O-Si bonding within the tetrahedra in hydrous silicate mineral structures, but it did not break the metal–OH bonding of the octahedra. In contrast to previous studies, our results imply that solar wind irradiation should also form H2O on anhydrous silicate minerals. This suggests the possibility of H2O formation on the surfaces of planetary bodies located inside of the snow line. The saturation timescale of spectral modification based on our results is estimated to be from 102 to 103 yr at 1 AU. This timescale is much shorter than that of the micrometeorite bombardment (106 to 107 yr), and it is comparable to the exposure age of small bodies. Therefore, we expect that spectral modification for small body surfaces would be mostly saturated.

Spitzer’s Solar System studies of comets, centaurs and Kuiper belt objects

In its 16 years of scientific measurements, the Spitzer Space Telescope performed ground-breaking and key infrared measurements of Solar System objects near and far. Targets ranged from the smallest planetesimals to the giant planets; Spitzer helped us to reshape our understanding of these objects while also laying the groundwork for future infrared space-based observations like those to be undertaken by the James Webb Space Telescope in the 2020s. In this Review Article, we describe how Spitzer advanced our knowledge of Solar System formation and evolution through observations of small outer Solar System planetesimals—that is, comets, centaurs and Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). Relics from the early formation era of our Solar System, these objects hold important information about the processes that created them.We group Spitzer’s key contributions into three broad classes: characterization of new Solar System objects (comets D/ISON 2012 S1, C/2016 R2 and 1I/‘Oumuamua); large population surveys of known objects (comets, centaurs and KBOs); and compositional studies through spectral measurements of body surfaces and emitted materials. In the Spitzer Space Telescope’s 16 years of operation, it observed many Solar System objects and environments. In this first Review Article of a pair, Spitzer’s insights into comets, centaurs and Kuiper belt objects—all remnants of the Solar System’s formation—are summarized.

A Dynamic Trajectory Fit to Multisensor Fireball Observations

Abstract Meteorites with known orbital origins are key to our understanding of solar system formation and the source of life on Earth. Fireball networks have been developed globally in a unified effort to record and ultimately retrieve these cosmic samples. However, the accuracy of the determined orbit and the likelihood of meteorite recovery depend directly on the accuracy of the chosen meteoroid triangulation method. There are three leading techniques for meteoroid triangulation discussed in the literature: the method of planes, the straight-line least-squares method, and the multiparameter fit method. Here we describe an alternative method to meteoroid triangulation, called the dynamic trajectory fit. This approach uses the meteoroid’s 3D dynamic equations of motion to fit a realistic trajectory directly to multisensor line-of-sight observations. This method has the ability to resolve fragmentation events, fit systematic observatory timing offsets, and determine mass estimates of the meteoroid along its observable trajectory. Through a comprehensive Monte Carlo analysis of over 100,000 trajectory simulations, we find this new method to more accurately estimate meteoroid trajectories of slow entry events (<25 km s−1) and events observed from low convergence angles (<10°) compared to existing meteoroid triangulation techniques. Additionally, we triangulate an observed fireball event with visible fragmentation using the various triangulation methods to show that the proposed dynamic trajectory fit implementing fragmentation to best match the captured multisensor line-of-sight data.

Proposta de ensino de fundamentos de Astronomia e Astrofísica via ensino sob medida

Embora o Ensino de Astronomia seja recomendado por diversos documentos normativos, é desconsiderado por grande parte dos autores de livros didáticos, bem como esquecido pelos professores da educação básica em seus planejamentos e ações didáticas. Como forma de contribuir para sanar essa lacuna, desenvolvemos uma sequência utilizando o método Ensino sob Medida. Essa sequência didática utilizou o método supracitado para abordar os seguintes temas: o que é uma estrela? Qual a origem da formação do sistema solar? O nascimento, a vida e a morte das estrelas, nucleossíntese e a origem e a expansão do universo. Foram programadas cinco aulas com 50 minutos cada e, ao final, foi aplicado um teste conceitual a fim de avaliar a aprendizagem dos estudantes, além de um questionário de opiniões, com intuito de verificar o engajamento deles. Com tais aplicações, percebeu-se que essa sequência didática proporcionou engajamento dos alunos nas atividades.
