Photoluminescence of Sol?Gel Hybrid Films Doped with Erbium Tris 8-Hydroxyquinoline

Erbium tris 8-hydroxyquinoline (ErQ) was successfully incorporated into the sol–gel hybrid material (HYBRIMER) synthesized by using methyltriethoxysilane, vinyltriethoxysilane, and phenyltrimethoxysilane even though it has poor solubility in general organic solvent. The composition and microstructure of the HYBRIMER film doped with ErQ was analyzed using Rutherford backscattering method and scanning electron microscope. The refractive index of the HYBRIMER film was also investigated with ErQ concentration. The HYBRIMER film doped with ErQ showed a clear photoluminescence (PL) at 1.5 μm. PL intensity increased with ErQ concentration without concentration quenching until Er/Si ratio reached 5 at%.

Photoluminescence of mesoporous silica films impregnated with an erbium complex

Transparent mesoporous silica films were prepared by sol-gel spin coating on silicon wafers at room temperature. An erbium complex, erbium tris 8-hydroxyquinoline (ErQ), was homogeneously impregnated into the pores of the mesoporous silica films, and its concentration was easily controlled by using a solution immersing technique. The ErQ-impregnated mesoporous silica films show a room-temperature photoluminescence at 1.5 µm.

Indirect excitation of Er3+ in sol-gel hybrid films doped with an erbium complex

Transparent sol-gel hybrid films doped with erbium tris 8-hydroxyquinoline were prepared using methyltriethoxysilane, vinyltriethoxysilane, and phenyltrimethoxysilane as precursors. We obtain a strong 1.53-μm Er3+ luminescence with a wide full width at half-maximum and no thermal quenching. Comparison of absorption of the film with the pump wavelength dependence of Er3+ luminescence intensity indicates the presence of an efficient indirect excitation path for Er3+ via organic ligands.
