Descriptive epidemiology of soft tissue sarcomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumors in Thailand

This study aimed to analyze burden of STS and GIST in population and survival rate which represented the current situation of treatment in Thailand. The data was collected from five population-based cancer registries around the country for the period 2001 through 2015. The Segi world standard population was used to calculated age-standardized incidence rates (ASR). Standardized rate ratios (SRR) were used to compare populations. Joinpoint Trend Analysis was used to assess changes in incidence. STATA was used to examine patient survival rates. During the study period, 4080 cases of STS and 457 cases of GIST were reported. The ASR of STS and GIST was 2.14/100,000 person-years and 0.22/100,000 person-years, respectively. The most common histological types of STS were unspecified sarcoma (24.8%), leiomyosarcoma (19.0%) and liposarcoma (11.4%). The overall ASR of STS in Thailand was relatively low compared to Western countries. The five-year survival rate was 62.6% for STS and 63.4% for GIST, which was comparable to the rates reported in other countries. This is the first report of STS and GIST from PBCRs in Thailand. Based on current healthcare service, an overall survival rates of STS and GIST are comparable to those reported from others.

Soft Tissue Sarcomas: A 16-Year Experience of a Tertiary Referral Hospital in North Jordan.

Background and Objectives: Sarcomas are rare malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin. Their low prevalence and histological heterogeneity make their diagnosis a challenging task. To the best of our knowledge, the epidemiology of soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) was not well studied in Jordan. This study thus aimed to determine STS epidemiologic trends at King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH); a tertiary hospital that provides cancer healthcare for 70% of the population in Irbid Governorate, North Jordan. The findings of this study will provide a good reference point of the burden of STSs in Jordan and the Middle East region. Materials and Methods: All cases with confirmed STS diagnoses who attended KAUH from January 2003 until December 2018 were included in the initial analysis. Bone sarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors and uterine sarcomas were not included in the study. Information collected from the pathology reports and electronic medical records was used to determine STS prevalence, incidence rate, age and gender distributions, histological types and anatomic location. Cases were reviewed by three pathologists with interest in soft tissue tumors. The findings were compared with literature. Results: In total, 157 STS cases were reported (1.9% of cancers diagnosed at KAUH during the 16-year study period). Crude annual incidence rate (IR) per 100,000 person-years ranged from 0.48 in 2015 to 1.83 in 2011 (average = 1.04). Age-standardized IR (ASR)(World WHO 2000–2025) was 1.37. Male:female ratio was 1.3:1. Median age was 39 years. Age ranged from <1 year to 90 years. Overall STS rates increased with age. The most common histological types were liposarcoma (19%), rhabdomyosarcoma (17%) and leiomyosarcoma (10%). The most common anatomic location was the extremity (40.1%), followed by the trunk (14.7%), then head and neck (10.8%). Conclusion: STSs are rare in North Jordan. A slight increase in their incidence was identified during the study period similar to global trends. The collection of relevant data on established risk factors along with a broader scale evaluation of the epidemiology of STS in the Middle East region is recommended to better evaluate disease burden and trends.

Buttock sarcoma: a case report and treatment with buttockectomy

Buttock soft-tissue sarcomas are common entities that have been infrequently reported. Little is known about the epidemiology of soft-tissue sarcomas. The current therapeutic approach suggests that a large tumour excision with clear margins and effective adjuvant therapy are needed to improve overall survival rates. Overall survival rates vary between 25% and 40% for a period of 5 years and 48.5% for a 2-year period. A case is reported of a patient with a diagnosis of pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma on whom a buttockectomy was performed. A brief retrospective analysis of sarcomas in our centre is reported.

Descriptive epidemiology of soft tissue sarcomas in Vaud, Switzerland

Trends in incidence and survival from soft tissue sarcomas (STS) were analysed for the period 1974–1994 using data from the Cancer Registry of the Swiss canton of Vaud. A total of 645 cases were registered. The most common histotypes were fibrosarcoma (0.82/100 000 males, 0.86/100 000 females, world standard, 1990–1994), leiomyosarcoma (0.90/100 000 males, 1.28/100 000 females, 1990–1994), and Kaposi's sarcoma (3.10/100 000 males in 1990–1994). Overall incidence rates for STS increased from 2.68/100 000 males in 1974–1979 to 6.86 in 1990–1994, and from 3.61 to 4.27 in females. However, after excluding Kaposi's sarcoma, no consistent trend over time was observed, peak rates (approximately 4.40/100 000) being registered in the late 1980s for both sexes, with some levelling off thereafter. Five-year relative survival was 17% for Kaposi's sarcomas, and 51% for other STS (all STSs, 45%). These data indicate that there has been no major new risk factor for STS of such a relevance to modify appreciably the overall rates on a population level, except from the impact of the AIDS epidemic for Kaposi's sarcoma.
