Coulomb Interaction-Driven Entanglement of Electrons on Helium

The generation and evolution of entanglement in many-body systems is an active area of research that spans multiple fields, from quantum information science to the simulation of quantum many-body systems encountered in condensed matter, subatomic physics, and quantum chemistry. Motivated by recent experiments exploring quantum information processing systems with electrons trapped above the surface of cryogenic noble gas substrates, we theoretically investigate the generation of entanglement between two electrons via their unscreened Coulomb interaction. The model system consists of two electrons confined in separate electrostatic traps that establish microwave-frequency quantized states of their motion. We compute the motional energy spectra of the electrons, as well as their entanglement, by diagonalizing the model Hamiltonian with respect to a single-particle Hartree product basis. We also compare our results with the predictions of an effective Hamiltonian. The computational procedure outlined here can be employed for device design and guidance of experimental implementations. In particular, the theoretical tools developed here can be used for fine-tuning and optimization of control parameters in future experiments with electrons trapped above the surface of superfluid helium or solid neon. Interconversion between block coherence and multipartite entanglement in many-body systems

Coherence is intrinsically related to projective measurement. When the fixed projective measurement involves higher-rank projectors, the coherence resource is referred to as block coherence, which comes from the superposition of orthogonal subspaces. Here, we establish a set of quantitative relations for the interconversion between block coherence and multipartite entanglement under the framework of the block-incoherent operations. It is found that the converted multipartite entanglement is upper bounded by the initial block coherence of single-party system. Moreover, the generated multipartite entanglement can be transferred to its subsystems and restored to block coherence of the initial single-party system by means of local block-incoherent operations and classical communication. In addition, when only the coarse-grained quantum operations are accessible for the ancillary subsystems, we further demonstrate that a lossless resource interconversion is still realizable, and give a concrete example in three four-level systems. Our results provide a versatile approach to utilize different quantum resources in a cyclic fashion.

Efficient Large-Scale Many-Body Quantum Dynamics via Local-Information Time Evolution

During time evolution of many-body systems entanglement grows rapidly, limiting exact simulations to small-scale systems or small timescales. Quantum information tends, however, to flow towards larger scales without returning to local scales, such that its detailed large-scale structure does not directly affect local observables. This allows for the removal of large-scale quantum information in a way that preserves all local observables and gives access to large-scale and large-time quantum dynamics. To this end, we use the recently introduced to organize quantum information into different scales, allowing us to define and that we employ to systematically discard long-range quantum correlations in a controlled way. Our approach relies on decomposing the system into subsystems up to a maximum scale and time evolving the subsystem density matrices by solving the subsystem von Neumann equations in parallel. Importantly, the information flow needs to be preserved during the discarding of large-scale information. To achieve this without the need to make assumptions about the microscopic details of the information current, we introduce a second scale at which information is discarded, while using the state at the maximum scale to accurately obtain the information flow. The resulting algorithm, which we call local-information time evolution, is highly versatile and suitable for investigating many-body quantum dynamics in both closed and open quantum systems with diverse hydrodynamic behaviors. We present results for the energy transport in the mixed-field Ising model and the magnetization transport in the XX spin chain with onsite dephasing where we accurately determine the power-law exponent and the diffusion coefficients. Furthermore, the information lattice framework employed here promises to offer insightful results about the spatial and temporal behavior of entanglement in many-body systems. A Mini-Review of the Kinetic Energy Partition Method in Quantum Mechanics

Based on the idea of adiabatic symmetry, we present a novel basis set expansion method—the kinetic energy partition (KEP) method—for solving quantum eigenvalue problems. Broken symmetry is responsible for quantum entanglement in many-body systems via parametric non-adiabatic corrections. Starting from simple one-particle-in-one-dimension problems, we gradually increase the complexity in the number of particles and the interaction patterns. Our goal in the mini-review is to advocate for the utility of the KEP method in front-line research, in particular for research beginners in quantum many-body problems.

Detecting Entanglement in Quantum Many-Body Systems via Permutation Moments.

Multipartite entanglement plays an essential role in both quantum information science and many-body physics. Because of the exponentially large dimension and complex geometric structure of the state space, the detection of entanglement in many-body systems is extremely challenging in reality. Conventional means, like entanglement witness and entropy criterion, either highly depend on the prior knowledge of the studied systems or the detection capability is relatively weak. In this Letter, we propose a framework for designing multipartite entanglement criteria based on permutation moments, which have an effective implementation with either the generalized control-swap quantum circuits or the random unitary techniques. As an example, in the bipartite scenario, we develop an entanglement criterion that can detect bound entanglement and show strong detection capability in the multiqubit Ising model with a long-range XY Hamiltonian. In the multipartite case, the permutation-moment-based criteria can detect entangled states that are not detectable by any criteria extended from the bipartite case. Our framework also shows potential in entanglement quantification and entanglement structure detection.

Quantum entanglement in the Sachdev—Ye—Kitaev model and its generalizations

Entanglement is one of the most important concepts in quantum physics. We review recent progress in understanding the quantum entanglement in many-body systems using large-N solvable models: the Sachdev—Ye—Kitaev (SYK) model and its generalizations. We present the study of entanglement entropy in the original SYK model using three different approaches: the exact diagonalization, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, and the path-integral representation. For coupled SYK models, the entanglement entropy shows linear growth and saturation at the thermal value. The saturation is related to replica wormholes in gravity. Finally, we consider the steady-state entanglement entropy of quantum many-body systems under repeated measurements. The traditional symmetry breaking in the enlarged replica space leads to the measurement-induced entanglement phase transition.

New computable entanglement monotones from formal group theory

We present a mathematical construction of new quantum information measures that generalize the notion of logarithmic negativity. Our approach is based on formal group theory. We shall prove that this family of generalized negativity functions, due their algebraic properties, is suitable for studying entanglement in many-body systems. Under mild hypotheses, the new measures are computable entanglement monotones. Also, they are composable: their evaluation over tensor products can be entirely computed in terms of the evaluations over each factor, by means of a specific group law. In principle, they might be useful to study separability and (in a future perspective) criticality of mixed states, complementing the role of Rényi’s entanglement entropy in the discrimination of conformal sectors for pure states.

Resource conversion between operational coherence and multipartite entanglement in many-body systems

We establish a set of resource conversion relationships between quantum coherence and multipartite entanglement in many-body systems, where the operational measures of resource cost and distillation are focused. Under the multipartite incoherent operation, the initial coherence of single-party system bounds the maximal amounts of corresponding operational entanglement in an arbitrary bipartite partition as well as the genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) in many-body systems. Furthermore, the converted multipartite entanglement can be transferred to its subsystems and restored to coherence of a single party by means of local incoherent operations and classical communication, which constitutes a protocol of resource interconversion within the full incoherent operation scenario. As an example, we present a scheme for cyclic interconversion between coherence and GME in three-qubit systems without loss. Moreover, we analyze the property of bipartite and multipartite genuine multi-level entanglement by the initial coherence and investigate multipartite resource dynamics in the conversion.

Multipartite Entanglement in Stabilizer Tensor Networks.

Despite the fundamental importance of quantum entanglement in many-body systems, our understanding is mostly limited to bipartite situations. Indeed, even defining appropriate notions of multipartite entanglement is a significant challenge for general quantum systems. In this work, we initiate the study of multipartite entanglement in a rich, yet tractable class of quantum states called stabilizer tensor networks. We demonstrate that, for generic stabilizer tensor networks, the geometry of the tensor network informs the multipartite entanglement structure of the state. In particular, we show that the average number of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) triples that can be extracted from a stabilizer tensor network is small, implying that tripartite entanglement is scarce. This, in turn, restricts the higher-partite entanglement structure of the states. Recent research in quantum gravity found that stabilizer tensor networks reproduce important structural features of the AdS/CFT correspondence, including the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for the entanglement entropy and certain quantum error correction properties. Our results imply a new operational interpretation of the monogamy of the Ryu-Takayanagi mutual information and an entropic diagnostic for higher-partite entanglement. Our technical contributions include a spin model for evaluating the average GHZ content of stabilizer tensor networks, as well as a novel formula for the third moment of random stabilizer states, which we expect to find further applications in quantum information.

Robustness of entanglement as an indicator of topological phases in quantum walks

How to reveal topological phases and their boundaries is an intriguing issue in various systems. Entanglement, which plays a fundamental role in quantum information, has been found profoundly related to topological phases. However, experimentally exploring this relation is precluded by the limited ability to obtain entanglement in many-body systems. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate that the robustness of entanglement, quantified by the von Neumann entropy, can be used to reveal the topological phase with winding number W = 1 and topological phase with W = 0 in quantum walks. With the different robustness of entanglement against perturbations of a parameter, the phase boundaries between the distinct topological phases can be further determined. As a result, our work not only offers a new perspective for quantum walks but also exhibits the deep connection between entanglement and topological physics.

Reconstructing entanglement Hamiltonian via entanglement eigenstates

The entanglement Hamiltonian $H_E$, defined through the reduced density matrix of a subsystem $\rho_A=\exp(-H_E)$, is an important concept in understanding the nature of quantum entanglement in many-body systems and quantum field theories. In this work, we explore a numerical scheme which explicitly reconstructs the entanglement Hamiltonian using one entangled mode (i.e., an eigenstate) of $\rho_A$. We demonstrate and benchmark this scheme on quantum spin lattice models. The resulting $H_E$ bears a form similar to a physical Hamiltonian with spatially varying couplings, which allows us to make quantitative comparison with perturbation theory and conformal field theory.

Choreographed entanglement dances: Topological states of quantum matter

It has long been thought that all different phases of matter arise from symmetry breaking. Without symmetry breaking, there would be no pattern, and matter would be featureless. However, it is now clear that for quantum matter at zero temperature, even symmetric disordered liquids can have features, giving rise to topological phases of quantum matter. Some of the topological phases are highly entangled (that is, have topological order), whereas others are weakly entangled (that is, have symmetry-protected trivial order). This Review provides a brief summary of these zero-temperature states of matter and their emergent properties, as well as their importance in unifying some of the most basic concepts in nature.

Perturbative expansion of entanglement negativity using patterned matrix calculus

Negativity is an entanglement monotone frequently used to quantify entanglement in bipartite states. Because negativity is a non-analytic function of a density matrix, existing methods used in the physics literature are insufficient to compute its derivatives. To this end we develop techniques in the calculus of complex, patterned matrices and use them to conduct a perturbative analysis of negativity in terms of arbitrary variations of the density operator. The result is an easy-to-implement expansion that can be carried out to all orders. On the way we provide convenient representations of the partial transposition map appearing in the definition of negativity. Our methods are well-suited to study the growth and decay of entanglement in a wide range of physical systems, including the generic linear growth of entanglement in many-body systems, and have broad relevance to many functions of quantum states and observables.

Correlations in local measurements and entanglement in many-body systems

While entanglement plays an important role in characterizing quantum many-body systems, it is hardly possible to directly access many-body entanglement in real experiments. In this paper, we study how bipartite entanglement of many-body states is manifested in the correlation of local measurement outcomes. In particular, we consider a measure of correlation defined as the statistical distance between the joint probability distribution of local measurement outcomes and the product of its marginal distributions. Various bounds of this measure are obtained and several examples of many-body states are considered as a testbed for the measure. We also generalize the framework to the case of imprecise measurement and argue that the considered measure is related to the concept of quantum macroscopicity.

The interplay between frustration and entanglement in many-body systems

Frustration of classical many-body systems can be used to distinguish ferromagnetic interactions from anti-ferromagnetic ones via the Toulouse conditions. A quantum version of the Toulouse conditions provides a similar classification based on the local ground states. We compute the global ground states for a family of models with Heisenberg-like interactions and analyse their behaviour with respect to frustration, entanglement and degeneracy. For that we develop analytical and numerical analysing tools capable of quantifying the interplay between those three quantities. We find that the quantum Toulouse conditions provide a proper classification, however, refinements can be found. Our results show how the different local ground states affect the interplay and pave the way for further generalisation and possible applications to other quantum many-body systems.

Novel quantum phase transition from bounded to extensive entanglement

The nature of entanglement in many-body systems is a focus of intense research with the observation that entanglement holds interesting information about quantum correlations in large systems and their relation to phase transitions. In particular, it is well known that although generic, many-body states have large, extensive entropy, ground states of reasonable local Hamiltonians carry much smaller entropy, often associated with the boundary length through the so-called area law. Here we introduce a continuous family of frustration-free Hamiltonians with exactly solvable ground states and uncover a remarkable quantum phase transition whereby the entanglement scaling changes from area law into extensively large entropy. This transition shows that entanglement in many-body systems may be enhanced under special circumstances with a potential for generating "useful" entanglement for the purpose of quantum computing and that the full implications of locality and its restrictions on possible ground states may hold further surprises.

Witnessing Multipartite Entanglement by Detecting Asymmetry

The characterization of quantum coherence in the context of quantum information theory and its interplay with quantum correlations is currently subject of intense study. Coherence in a Hamiltonian eigenbasis yields asymmetry, the ability of a quantum system to break a dynamical symmetry generated by the Hamiltonian. We here propose an experimental strategy to witness multipartite entanglement in many-body systems by evaluating the asymmetry with respect to an additive Hamiltonian. We test our scheme by simulating asymmetry and entanglement detection in a three-qubit Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) diagonal state.

Quantum Fisher information and spin squeezing of the non-Hermitian one-axis twisting model and the effect of dephasing

A detailed analysis of the quantum Fisher information (QFI) and spin squeezing (SS) of the non-Hermitian one-axis twisting model is conducted. The results show that the non-Hermitian model achieves significant entanglement in many-body systems, which is quite different from the Hermitian case, and achieves more SS than the optimal value of the Hermitian counterpart. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of dephasing, which is induced by external field fluctuations, and find out to what extent it weakens QFI and SS of the non-Hermitian one-axis twisting model.

Characterizing the width of entanglement

The size of controllable quantum systems has grown in recent times. Therefore, the spatial degree of freedom becomes more and more important in experimental quantum systems. However, the investigation of entanglement in many-body systems mainly concentrated on the number of entangled particles and ignored the spatial degree of freedom so far. As a consequence, a general concept together with experimentally realizable criteria has been missing to describe the spatial distribution of entanglement. We close this gap by introducing the concept of entanglement width as measure of the spatial distribution of entanglement in many-body systems. We develop criteria to detect the width of entanglement based solely on global observables. As a result, our entanglement criteria can be applied easily to many-body systems since single-particle addressing is not necessary.
