Enhancing Student's Learning and Satisfaction Through the Use of Social Media

Communication in and out the classroom is an essential component for education. As the technology emerges, there is a need to adopt to the new technologies to enhance students’ learning experience. Social media technologies provide informal communication methods that promote student engagement and satisfaction by removing communication barriers. In this paper, we report our experience in using different social media technologies to enhance students’ learning experience and satisfaction with the course. We perform our experiment in software project management course and conduct a survey to assess the students’ perspective towards using these different social media technologies in enhancing their learning and satisfaction. Results show that students are satisfied and feel that their learning experience has improved when using social media for class communication.

Workshop report: "Using Social Media and Smartphone Applications in Practical Lessons to Enhance Student Learning" in Búzios, Brazil (August 6-8, 2017).

Cost-effective student engagement poses a challenge for instructors, especially those who may not be familiar with new technologies and mobile devices. In this workshop, participants, experienced and discussed two ways of using smartphones in physiology classes: to engage in an online learning environment for discussions, and to make physiological measurements. Participants signed up for individual Twitter accounts and learned how to tweet, retweet, message, use a URL shortener, and use hashtags. They then went on to locate articles on an assigned topic from the Twitter accounts of credible science sources ( American Journal of Physiology, The Scientist, CDC.gov, WHO.int) and applied their Twitter skills to discuss the science topic of current interest. Additionally, participants shared their knowledge about the use of smartphones as a tool for teaching; they discussed the foundations of smartphone-assisted learning and the concept of mobile-learning laboratories, which we refer to as MobLeLabs. Participants also performed an experiment that used an Axé dance video and smartphone applications to measure changes in heart rate and reaction time. Our report describes this international hands-on teaching workshop and highlights its outcomes.

PeerWise as a Vehicle for Uncertainty-resolution to Enhance Student Learning

Previous studies of contributing student pedagogies (CSPs) have shown gains for students through increased summative grade and demonstration of deeper levels of learning. Resolution activities have been postulated by Draper (2009) as another way of enhancing students’ learning. In this paper, we show examples of learning occurring through resolution activities for students in higher education using PeerWise, a CSP tool, and we describe this as uncertainty-resolution that enhances learning. We then suggest a model through which this, and all learning in PeerWise, might take place. Finally, we anticipate that evidence of uncertainty-resolution will be seen in other PeerWise repositories; if this is so, we suggest that other educators using PeerWise should encourage and enhance their students’ learning by facilitating uncertainty-enhanced learning within PeerWise, and more broadly in other CSP activities.

An Analysis of College Admission System in the UK and Implications on Reconstructing it in the Republic of Korea

AbstractSemester system has brought many changes in the life of university academia. This study was focused on problems faced by the teachers in semester system. Fifty teachers were selected as sample of the study. Main objectives were to know the specific problems related to semester system. It was found that teachers feel overburdened. They had to teach, prepare assignments, evaluate students' papers, produce research papers, prepare exam results, take care of new admissions, and helping in other administrative duties. It was recommended that workload of the teachers may be reduced to enhance quality in the system. It is also recommended that university administration should take steps to help the academia in promotion of knowledge and maintenance of quality in universities.Keywords: University Academia, Semester System, Examination SystemIntroductionSemester system is not an education system. It is rather an examination system. The main target of semester system is to put emphasis on continuous, comprehensive and in-depth learning aiming at capacity building of the students by developing required Knowledge, skills and attitude to become an efficient and effective citizen. The educationists are agreed regarding the benefits of semester system over the annual system but it is a challenging job for a Pakistani university teacher to survive in the semester system. The effective and successful implementation of semester system depends upon a number of conditions as stated by Jadoon, Jabeen & Zeba (2012). These are: Well-designed curriculum, syllabus coverage within limited time, Regularity of classes, Timely and constructive feedback to students by the teachers; Accessibility of teachers to students outside the class; Availability of information resources to students such as state-of-the-art library and computer facilities; Highest level of secrecy and confidentiality in examination; Transparency in evaluation and grades; Timely declaration of semester results etc. Ali (2006) cited Kotier and Keller (2001) elaborated that for the effectiveness of system, satisfaction is necessary. Students' satisfaction is highly imperative because if they are fully satisfied with the facilities provided by the universities, their ultimate achievement will automatically be excellent. Douglas and Barry (2006) stated that universities should provide such facilities to their students' that satisfy them completely. Aslam, Younis, Sheik, Maher, and Abbasi, (2012) in their study pointed out that semester system an efficient system. It enhances students learning and satisfaction but burden on teachers is very high and they fell under pressure. Enhancing student learning experience with technology-mediated gamification: An empirical study

We evaluated the use of gamification to facilitate a student-centered learning environment within an undergraduate Year 2 Personal and Professional Development (PPD) course. In addition to face-to-face classroom practices, an information technology-based gamified system with a range of online learning activities was presented to students as support material. The implementation of the gamified course lasted two academic terms. The subsequent evaluation from a cohort of 136 students indicated that student performance was significantly higher among those who participated in the gamified system than in those who engaged with the nongamified, traditional delivery, while behavioral engagement in online learning activities was positively related to course performance, after controlling for gender, attendance, and Year 1 PPD performance. Two interesting phenomena appeared when we examined the influence of student background: female students participated significantly more in online learning activities than male students, and students with jobs engaged significantly more in online learning activities than students without jobs. The gamified course design advocated in this work may have significant implications for educators who wish to develop engaging technology-mediated learning environments that enhance students’ learning, or for a broader base of professionals who wish to engage a population of potential users, such as managers engaging employees or marketers engaging customers.

Enhancing Student Learning by “Building a Caring Climate”: School Counselors’ Experiences With Classroom Management

To address a gap in the literature and inform school counseling practice, this investigation explored school counselors’ experiences with classroom management. A qualitative thematic analysis triangulated data from a national archival survey and two focus groups. Participating school counselors communicated two overarching themes: appreciating and utilizing classroom management strategies and factors that influenced their classroom management. This article provides discussion and implications, including applicable recommendations for practicing school counselors.

Influence of Faculty Communication on Students’ Learning

It is universal fact that faculty or teacher plays an important role in students overall development. This paper is an attempt at revealing theinfluence of faculty communication on the students learning process. This study was carried out on the under graduate students of B-school of central India. The 80 respondents were collectedas sample. This study is carried on the youth which are the backbone of economy. It is expected that the findings will provide vital inputs to faculty to make their classroom more effective results in enhancing students learning. The result shows that thefaculty communication has significant impact on the students learning.

Teaching Approach and Materials for Enhancing Student Learning Experience in Tomography Engineering: Soft-Field Tomography

This paper presents the development of course materials and a laboratory exercise for teaching the course “Tomography Engineering and Applications” for MSc and MEng students. The lecturing materials are enhanced by developing MATLAB codes that illustrate the working principles of finite difference and finite elements methods, allowing students to step through the algorithm development procedures and gain better insights into the taught theoretical concepts. A virtual laboratory excise is developed to allow the students to interact with image reconstruction examples by varying the controlling parameters and exam their effects. Then an assignment is designed to enhance the student learning experience by encouraging students to explore and form appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of image reconstruction for electrical resistance tomography using EIDORS. In the process, a number of important skills in scientific research can be gained by students, i.e. make careful observations, carry out critical analysis of the results, draw sensible conclusions and report the findings in a logical manner. It is believed that these three teaching and learning components form an integral and comprehensive approach to teaching Tomography Imaging techniques at the MEng and MSc level.

Enhancing Student Learning of Differential Equations through Technology

In this work, we review and share some useful technology for mathematics educators that can help to enhance their pedagogical practices to motivate students to improve their further understanding of differential equations after an initial exposure to the topic in an undergraduate class. In particular, we present some innovative ways to employ technology tools to motivate the learning of students and their appreciation of the applications of differential equations to real-world problems. The objective is to engage the students in exploration to solve differential equations using technology. This work presents a benchmark example involving modelling epidemics as a real-world problem and how to engage students who have basic familiarity with differential equations through literate programming. Visualization of the results using graphical user interface is also presented. The readers are also exposed to a novel free network computing laboratory called NCLab which is applied to a variety of applications involving differential equations.

Creating Interinstitutional Collaboration to Enhance Student Learning Outcomes and Potential Kinesiology Professionalization

This paper explores the use of collaboration theory and the consensus building framework to develop institutional strategic alliances at two North American postsecondary institutions. Collaboration between institutional and/or external partners offers rich opportunities to develop creative programming that provides students with opportunities for service learning situated in a well-planned curriculum. The collaboration development capitalizes on mutually beneficial outcomes for all partners and affords more informed decision making and impact than if partners were working individually. This paper highlights two successful partnerships and outlines the future direction of those collaborative alliances.

Embedded Library Services: From Cooperation to Collaboration to Enhance Student Learning in Asynchronous Online Course

ABSTRACTThe online environment presents a unique challenge to higher education. Shifting from the face- to-face format to online not only involves rethinking course design, but requires careful consideration of when and how to teach students, how to find and evaluate information needed to successfully complete coursework. One solution is faculty teaming with subject librarians to design and build in teachable moments. This case study discusses one such successful partnership from designing the course to choosing and embedding library resources and finally to the learning outcome of the online course.

Photovoice and Photodocumentary for Enhancing Community Partner Engagement and Student Learning in a Public Health Field School in Cape Town

Background: Field school research, which begins by considering community partners as pedagogues and thus exploring their perspectives on student learning, is uncommon. Photovoice is a method for self-expression of such marginalized voices. Purpose: Describe the photovoice to photodocumentary process and present results of its evaluation. Methodology/Approach: We employed photovoice with the local guides who accompany community health research field school students in Cape Town. Guides were prompted to take photographs of what students may not see or understand about their community. These were discussed at three workshops and developed into a photodocumentary for inclusion in the curriculum. Twenty-one students completed an open-ended questionnaire. These, and student/staff discussions, were thematically analyzed. Findings/Conclusion: Students reported learning about cultural practices which otherwise would not be visible to them. They felt greater connection to their guides who they saw in a new light, and became aware of how topic-specificity drew attention away from overarching characteristics of community life. Questions raised might be better explored through facilitated discussion rather than question-and-answer sessions alone. Implications: Field schools depend on academic–community partnerships. Photovoice can create space for community partner reflection on student learning and the co-creation of effective pedagogical tools valued by students.

Field Trip Strategy in Enhancing Writing Descriptive Text

Field-based learning has long been used by teachers to enhance students learning. Futher, Field trips are recognized as important moments in learning; a shared social experience that provides the opportunity for students to encounter and explore novel things in an authentic setting. The need to develop an effective environmental education program ranks as one of the major challenges facing education in the next decade. This paper is focused on analyzing the effectiveness of field trips strategy on students’ writing descriptive text for a group of 30 students of second semester of FKIP UIR Pekanbaru in academic year 2016/2017 who were selected by using random sampling. The data were collected by giving test (pre-test and post-test) This study used experimental reseacrch, used by the Mann-Whitney U t-test. The normality of the test was analysed through Kolmogorov-Smirnova..The instruments used in this study were lesson plans and writing descriptive text tests. Regarding the data analysis, mean, percentage and Mann-Whitney U test scores for the dependent sample were employed. The result of statistc indicated that the asymptotic significance of less than 0.05 (p = 0.00 < 0.05). it means the students’ ability in writing descriptive text increased significantly after learning with fild trip strategy.

This partnership challenged the way in which higher education internalisation was viewed – in such a way that the visit was replicated in 2012 and this book was authored.

Drugs of Abuse and Addiction: An integrated approach to teaching

Background and purposeTo describe the design, implementation, and student perceptions of a Drugs of Abuse and Addiction elective course utilizing an integrated teaching model. Educational activity and settingThird-year pharmacy students enrolled in the two credit hour elective. Teaching methodology included didactic lecture, journal club, simulated addiction assignment with reflection, debates, external speakers, site visit to a residential drug court program and research paper with presentation. FindingsA course objective survey was administered upon course completion. All students strongly agreed that having science- and clinical-based faculty members develop and deliver course content was beneficial. Additionally, all students agree to strongly agree that their research project helped them integrate and comprehend the science and practice surrounding drugs of abuse and addiction. Discussion and summaryStudents enjoyed an integrated teaching approach and multiple teaching methodologies leading to increased engagement and enhancement of student learning. Course enrollment was beneficial for personalized learning, but limited student perspective.
