Correlation-driven topological Kondo superconductors

Searching for topological superconductors that host topological charge-neutral Majorana zero-modes at edges has become a central problem in condensed matter research due to their potential applications for quantum computations. Meanwhile, electron correlations in solid-state materials enhance quantum fluctuations and give rise to various quantum many-body phases. Whether these electron correlations alone would lead to topological superconductivity is a fundamentally important open problem. Here, we theoretically find the correlation-driven topological superconductivity in a class of Kondo lattice materials. Therein, the odd-parity Kondo hybridization mediates ferromagnetic spin-spin coupling and leads to spin-triplet pairing between local moments. Triplet p±ip′\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$p\\pm i{p}^{{\\prime} }$$\\end{document}-wave topological superconductivity with Majorana zero modes at edges is reached when Kondo hybridization co-exists with the triplet pairings. Our results offer a detailed understanding of the experimental observations on UTe2, a ferromagnetic heavy-electron triplet superconductor. Our approach to topological superconductivity shows advantages over the heterostructure approach by proximity effect.

Quantum spin liquid ground state in the trimer rhodate Ba4NbRh3O12

Frustrated magnets offer a plethora of exotic magnetic ground states, including quantum spin liquids (QSLs), in which enhanced quantum fluctuations prevent a long-range magnetic ordering of the strongly correlated spins down to lowest temperature. Here we have investigated the trimer based mixed valence hexagonal rhodate Ba4NbRh3O12 using a combination of dc and ac magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation (μSR) measurements. Despite the substantial antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, as evident from the Weiss temperature (θW∼−35 to −45K), among the Rh-local moments, neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin freezing is observed down to at least 50 mK, in ac-susceptibility, specific heat, and zero-field μSR measurements (down to 0.26 K). We ascribe the absence of any magnetic transition to enhanced quantum fluctuations as a result of geometrical frustration arising out of the edge-sharing equilateral Rh-triangular network in the structure. Our longitudinal-field μSR result evidences persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.26 K, thus stabilizing a dynamic QSL ground state in Ba4NbRh3O12. Furthermore, the magnetic specific heat data at low T reveal a significant T-linear contribution plus a quadratic T dependence, which may indicate the gapless Dirac QSL phenomenology of the spinon excitations with a linear dispersion. Strong pairing in mixed-dimensional bilayer antiferromagnetic Mott insulators

Interacting many-body systems in reduced-dimensional settings, such as ladders and few-layer systems, are characterized by enhanced quantum fluctuations. Recently, two-dimensional bilayer systems have sparked considerable interest because they can host unusual phases, including unconventional superconductivity. Here we present a theoretical proposal for realizing high-temperature pairing of fermions in a class of bilayer Hubbard models. We introduce a general and highly efficient pairing mechanism for mobile charge carriers in doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulators. The pairing is caused by the energy that one charge gains when it follows the path created by another charge. We show that this mechanism leads to the formation of highly mobile but tightly bound pairs in the case of mixed-dimensional Fermi–Hubbard bilayer systems. This setting is closely related to the Fermi–Hubbard model believed to capture the physics of copper oxides, and can be realized in currently available ultracold atom experiments.

Intertwining SU( N ) symmetry and frustration on a honeycomb lattice

Large symmetry groups in quantum many-body systems could strongly enhance quantum fluctuations and thereby stabilize exotic quantum phases. Frustrated interactions were long known to have similar effects. Here we intertwine the large SU($N$) symmetry and the frustration in a $J_1$-$J_2$ SU($N$) Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice, where $J_1$ is the nearest-neighbor coupling and $J_2$ is the next-nearest-neighbor coupling. With a large-$N$ analysis, we obtain a rich phase diagram by varying both $N$ and the ratio $J_2/J_1$. The ground states include Dirac spin liquid, chiral spin liquid, valence cluster solids, flux ordered state, and stripe states. The physical properties of each phase are discussed.

Unusual spin dynamics in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state of Ag3LiIr2O6

Recently, there have been contrary claims of Kitaev spin-liquid behaviour and ordered behavior in the honeycomb compound Ag$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ based on various experimental signatures. Our investigations on this system reveal a low-temperature ordered state with persistent dynamics down to the lowest temperatures. Magnetic order is confirmed by clear oscillations in the muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) time spectrum below 9 K till 52 mK. Coincidentally in $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance, a wipe-out of the signal is observed below $\sim$ 10 K which again strongly indicates magnetic order in the low temperature regime. This is supported by our density functional theory calculations which show an appreciable Heisenberg exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian that favors magnetic ordering. The $^7$Li shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate also show anomalies at $\sim$ 50 K. They are likely related to the onset of dynamic magnetic correlations, but their origin is not completely clear. Detailed analysis of our $\mu$SR data is consistent with a co-existence of incommensurate N\'eel and striped environments. A significant and undiminished dynamical relaxation rate ($\sim 5$ MHz) as seen in $\mu$SR deep into the ordered phase indicates enhanced quantum fluctuations in the ordered state.

Needle-like single crystals of CeAu2In4 have been grown from In flux and characterized as a new candidate of quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice compound by crystallographic, magnetic, transport, and specific-heat measurements down to very low temperatures. We observe an antiferromagnetic transition at T N ≈ 0.9 K, a highly non-mean-field profile of the corresponding peak in specific heat, and a large Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 369 mJ⋅mol−1⋅K−2. The Kondo temperature T K is estimated to be 1.1 K, being low and comparable to T N. While Fermi liquid behavior is observed deep into the magnetically ordered phase, the Kadowaki–Woods ratio is much reduced relative to the expected value for Ce compounds with Kramers doublet ground state. Markedly, this feature shares striking similarities to that of the prototypical quasi-one-dimensional compounds YbNi4P2 and CeRh6Ge4 with tunable ferromagnetic quantum critical point. Given the shortest Ce–Ce distance along the needle direction, CeAu2In4 appears to be an interesting model system for exploring antiferromagnetic quantum critical behaviors in a quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice with enhanced quantum fluctuations.

Signatures of optical phase transitions in superradiant and subradiant atomic arrays

Resonant light interacting with matter supports different phases of a polarisable medium, and optical bistability where two phases coexist. Such phases have previously been actively studied in cavities. Here, we identify signatures of optical phase transitions and optical bistability mapped onto scattered light in free-space planar arrays of cold atoms. Methods on how to explore such systems in superradiant and extreme subradiant states are proposed. The cooperativity threshold and intensity regimes for the intrinsic optical bistability, supported by resonant dipole-dipole interactions alone, are derived in several cases of interest analytically. Subradiant states require lower intensities, but stronger cooperativity for the existence of non-trivial phases than superradiant states. The transmitted light reveals phase transitions and bistability that are predicted by mean-field theory as large jumps in coherent and incoherent signals and hysteresis. In the quantum solution, traces of phase transitions are identified in enhanced quantum fluctuations of excited level populations.

Role of competing interactions on dynamic relaxation and exchange bias in spin-glass/ferromagnet bilayer

When a ferromagnet (FM) couples to a spin glass (SG), the hidden nature of SG may imprint on the FM via their interfacial coupling, probably resulting in elongated magnetic relaxation and enhanced unidirectional and uniaxial anisotropies. In parallel with the study of interfacial roles, e.g. interfacial coupling and matching, we focused on the influence of the competing interactions in SG (JSG) on the magnetic relaxation properties of SG/FM bilayer and the FM magnetization reversal involving exchange bias field (HE) and coercivity (HC). A fastest decay of relaxation in SG/FM bilayer is found at an intermediate JSG∼5.2 erg/cm2 and the relaxation parameters related to JSG are nonmonotonic. On the other hand, a pronounced HE of ∼-0.26 kOe is observed at small JSG, and as JSG increases larger than 2.275 erg/cm2, HE decreases by an order of magnitude and levels off, i.e., a net EB remains. HC is sensitive to JSG only at JSG above 2.275 erg/cm2 and exhibits a minimum value at JSG = 4.55 erg/cm2, just below 5.2 erg/cm2 where the relaxation decay is the fastest. Microscopic analysis unravels that the net magnetization associated with unidirectional magnetic stabilization and the large-area FM-like domains in SG are favored at small JSG, while with increasing JSG, the SG spins spontaneously reverse and thus the energy barriers are smeared out. A high susceptibility and a strong interfacial coupling lead to FM magnetization reversal under weaker fields and thus a decrease in coercivity. For too large JSG (exceeding 5.2 erg/cm2), magnetic frustration extends over the domains in SG meanwhile fierce energy competition occurs frequently, resembling enhanced quantum fluctuations. As a result, dynamic relaxation and statistic coercivity are both recovered. This work tells us that the independent modulations of unidirectional and uniaxial anisotropies are possible in SG-based systems through precisely controlling JSG, which is desired for application in the read/write head in future data storage media.

Magnetic ground state and magnetic excitations in black dioptase Cu6Si6O18

The low-temperature magnetic properties and magnetic structure of fully dehydrated black dioptase ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{6}{\mathrm{Si}}_{6}{\mathrm{O}}_{18}$ have been studied by single-crystal neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 30 T. The intrachain ${J}_{c}$ and interchain ${J}_{ab}$ interactions as well as the anisotropy of the exchange coupling ${J}_{c}$ have been determined using inelastic neutron-scattering techniques. Zero-field antiferromagnetic order at ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}=6.7$ K can be described by a commensurate propagation vector of $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,3/2)$ with respect to the hexagonal $R\overline{3}$:H unit cell. The Cu magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically along the $c$ axis with about ${12}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ tilt and are coupled ferromagnetically between the chains. The high-field magnetization measurements provide strong evidence for the presence of a spin-flop phase above 8 T. We found that ${J}_{c}$ in black dioptase is significantly increased, while ${J}_{ab}$ is much weaker compared to its counterpart, green dioptase ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{6}[{\mathrm{Si}}_{6}{\mathrm{O}}_{18}] 6{\mathrm{H}}_{2}\mathrm{O}$. We suggest that black dioptase behaves like a nearly ideal $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spiral chain with enhanced quantum fluctuations and weak spinon confinement ${J}_{ab}/{J}_{c}\ensuremath{\sim}0.02$.

Dissipative Bose-Josephson junction coupled to bosonic baths.

We investigate the effect of dissipation in a Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to baths of bosons at its two sites. Apart from the dynamical transition due to repulsive interactions, the BJJ undergoes a quantum phase transition by increasing the coupling strength with the bath modes. We analyze this system by mapping to an equivalent spin model coupled to the bosonic modes. The excitation energies and fluctuation of number imbalance are obtained within a Holstein-Primakoff approximation, which exhibits vanishing of the energy gap and enhanced quantum fluctuations at the critical point. We study the dynamics of BJJ using a time-dependent variational method and analyze stability of different types of steady states. As a special case we study in detail the phase space dynamics of BJJ coupled to a single mode, which reveals diffusive and incoherent behavior with increasing coupling to the bath mode. The dynamical steady states corresponding to the π oscillation and self-trapped state become unstable when their oscillation frequencies are in resonance with the bath modes. We study the Josephson dynamics in the presence of an Ohmic bath with Gaussian noise to incorporate the thermal fluctuations and obtain the Josephson oscillation frequency and damping analytically. We also observe the transition to the symmetry-broken state for strong coupling as well as decay of π oscillation and a self-trapped state to the ground state due to dissipation. Variation of the phase fluctuation with temperature of the bath shows similar behavior as observed in experiment. Finally we discuss the experimental setup to study the observable effects of dissipation in BJJ.

Field-induced spin-liquid-like state in a magnetic honeycomb lattice

Quantum fluctuations in magnetic lattices can yield a quantum spin-liquid (QSL) state, where no long-range order appears even at zero temperature. The variety of mechanisms that can generate the spin-liquid state and the more exotic QSL state remain unclear, however. Here, we report a magnetic honeycomb system, $\mathrm{BaC}{\mathrm{o}}_{2}{({\mathrm{P}}_{1\text{\ensuremath{-}}x}{\mathrm{V}}_{x})}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$, in which the spin correlations can be tuned by the disorder, leading to different magnetic behaviors. At low $x$, the material has a spin-glass ground state that appears to be due to coexisting and competing correlations. We have found that an external magnetic field can introduce spin-liquid-like behavior for some members of the solid solution, testified by the magnetic and thermodynamic experiments. Our results suggest that structural geometry, chemical disorder, and external field may help enhance quantum fluctuations in magnetic honeycomb materials.

Enhanced quantum spin fluctuations in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

For quantum fluids, the role of quantum fluctuations may be significant in several regimes such as when the dimensionality is low, the density is high, the interactions are strong, or for low particle numbers. In this paper we propose a fundamentally different regime for enhanced quantum fluctuations without being restricted by any of the above conditions. Instead, our scheme relies on the engineering of an effective attractive interaction in a dilute, two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) consisting of thousands of atoms. In such a regime, the quantum spin fluctuations are significantly enhanced (atom bunching with respect to the noninteracting limit) since they act to reduce the interaction energy - a remarkable property given that spin fluctuations are normally suppressed (anti-bunching) at zero temperature. In contrast to the case of true attractive interactions, our approach is not vulnerable to BEC collapse. We numerically demonstrate that these quantum fluctuations are experimentally accessible by either spin or single-component Bragg spectroscopy, offering a useful platform on which to test beyond-mean-field theories. We also develop a variational model and use it to analytically predict the shift of the immiscibility critical point, finding good agreement with our numerics.

Quantum-disordered state of magnetic and electric dipoles in an organic Mott system

Strongly enhanced quantum fluctuations often lead to a rich variety of quantum-disordered states. Developing approaches to enhance quantum fluctuations may open paths to realize even more fascinating quantum states. Here, we demonstrate that a coupling of localized spins with the zero-point motion of hydrogen atoms, that is, proton fluctuations in a hydrogen-bonded organic Mott insulator provides a different class of quantum spin liquids (QSLs). We find that divergent dielectric behavior associated with the approach to hydrogen-bond order is suppressed by the quantum proton fluctuations, resulting in a quantum paraelectric (QPE) state. Furthermore, our thermal-transport measurements reveal that a QSL state with gapless spin excitations rapidly emerges upon entering the QPE state. These findings indicate that the quantum proton fluctuations give rise to a QSL—a quantum-disordered state of magnetic and electric dipoles—through the coupling between the electron and proton degrees of freedom.

Phase Competition in the Palmer-Chalker XY Pyrochlore Er_{2}Pt_{2}O_{7}.

We report neutron scattering measurements on Er_{2}Pt_{2}O_{7}, a new addition to the XY family of frustrated pyrochlore magnets. Symmetry analysis of our elastic scattering data shows that Er_{2}Pt_{2}O_{7} orders into the k=0, Γ_{7} magnetic structure (the Palmer-Chalker state), at T_{N}=0.38 K. This contrasts with its sister XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets Er_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} and Er_{2}Ge_{2}O_{7}, both of which order into Γ_{5} magnetic structures at much higher temperatures, T_{N}=1.2 and 1.4K, respectively. In this temperature range, the magnetic heat capacity of Er_{2}Pt_{2}O_{7} contains a broad anomaly centered at T^{*}=1.5 K. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that this broad heat capacity anomaly sets the temperature scale for strong short-range spin fluctuations. Below T_{N}=0.38 K, Er_{2}Pt_{2}O_{7} displays a gapped spin-wave spectrum with an intense, flat band of excitations at lower energy and a weak, diffusive band of excitations at higher energy. The flat band is well described by classical spin-wave calculations, but these calculations also predict sharp dispersive branches at higher energy, a striking discrepancy with the experimental data. This, in concert with the strong suppression of T_{N}, is attributable to enhanced quantum fluctuations due to phase competition between the Γ_{7} and Γ_{5} states that border each other within a classically predicted phase diagram.

Stochastic electrodynamics simulations for collective atom response in optical cavities

We study the collective optical response of an atomic ensemble confined within a single-mode optical cavity by stochastic electrodynamics simulations that include the effects of atomic position correlations, internal level structure, and spatial variations in cavity coupling strength and atom density. In the limit of low light intensity the simulations exactly reproduce the full quantum field-theoretical description for cold stationary atoms and at higher light intensities we introduce semiclassical approximations to atomic saturation that we compare with the exact solution in the case of two atoms. We find that collective subradiant modes of the atoms, with very narrow linewidths, can be coupled to the cavity field by spatial variation of the atomic transition frequency and resolved at low intensities, and show that they can be specifically driven by tailored transverse pumping beams. We show that the cavity optical response, in particular both the subradiant mode profile and the resonance shift of the cavity mode, can be used as a diagnostic tool for the position correlations of the atoms and hence the atomic quantum many-body phase. The quantum effects are found to be most prominent close to the narrow subradiant mode resonances at high light intensities. Although an optical cavity can generally strongly enhance quantum fluctuations via light confinement, we show that the semiclassical approximation to the stochastic electrodynamics model provides at least a qualitative agreement with the exact optical response outside the subradiant mode resonances even in the presence of significant saturation of the atoms.

Field dependence of the magnetic correlations of the frustrated magnetSrDy2O4

The frustrated magnet SrDy$_2$O$_4$ exhibits a field-induced phase with a magnetization plateau at $1/3$ of the saturation value for magnetic fields applied along the $b$-axis. We report here a neutron scattering study of the nature and symmetry of the magnetic order in this field-induced phase. Below $T\approx 0.5$ K, there are strong hysteretic effects, and the order is short or long ranged for zero-field and field cooling, respectively. We find that the long-range ordered magnetic structure within the zig-zag chains is identical to that expected for the one-dimensional axial next-nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model in longitudinal field. The long-range ordered structure in field contrasts with the short-range order found at zero field, and is probably reached through enhanced quantum fluctuations with increasing fields.

Quantum Phenomena Emerging Near a Ferroelectric Critical Point in a Donor–Acceptor Organic Charge-Transfer Complex

When a second-order transition point is decreased to zero temperature, a continuous quantum phase transition between different ground states is realized at a quantum critical point (QCP). A recently synthesized organic charge-transfer complex, TTF-2,5-QBr 2 I 2 , provides a platform for the exploration of the quantum phenomena that accompany a ferroelectric QCP. Here, we summarize the recent results showing the quantum phenomena associated with the ferroelectric QCP in TTF-2,5-QBr 2 I 2 . Whereas the enhanced quantum fluctuations lead to quantitative changes in the critical exponents of the critical phenomena, they qualitatively change the nature of the domain-wall kinetics from thermally activated motion to temperature-independent tunneling motion. The present findings highlight the great influence of quantum fluctuations on the low-temperature physical properties and suggest that TTF-2,5-QBr 2 I 2 is a model system for the uniaxial ferroelectric QCP.

Entanglement, excitations, and correlation effects in narrow zigzag graphene nanoribbons

We investigate the low-lying excitation spectrum and ground-state properties of narrow graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edge configurations. Nanoribbons of comparable widths have been synthesized very recently [P. Ruffieux, \emph{et al.} Nature \textbf{531}, 489 (2016)], and their descriptions require more sophisticated methods since in this regime conventional methods, like mean-field or density-functional theory with local density approximation, fail to capture the enhanced quantum fluctuations. Using the unbiased density-matrix renormalization group algorithm we calculate the charge gaps with high accuracy for different widths and interaction strengths and compare them with mean-field results. It turns out that the gaps are much smaller in the former case due to the proper treatment of quantum fluctuations. Applying the elements of quantum information theory we also reveal the entanglement structure inside a ribbon and examine the spectrum of subsystem density matrices to understand the origin of entanglement. We examine the possibility of magnetic ordering and the effect of magnetic field. Our findings are relevant for understanding the gap values in different recent experiments and the deviations between them.

Magnetotransport Properties in High-Quality Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Superconducting Mo2C Crystals

Ultrathin transition metal carbides are a class of developing two-dimensional (2D) materials with superconductivity and show great potentials for electrical energy storage and other applications. Here, we report low-temperature magnetotransport measurements on high-quality ultrathin 2D superconducting α-Mo2C crystals synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition method. The magnetoresistance curves exhibit reproducible oscillations at low magnetic fields for temperature far below the superconducting transition temperature of the crystals. We interpret the oscillatory magnetoresistance as a consequence of screening currents circling around the boundary of triangle-shaped terraces found on the surface of ultrathin Mo2C crystals. As the sample thickness decreases, the Mo2C crystals exhibit negative magnetoresistance deep in the superconducting transition regime, which reveals strong phase fluctuations of the superconducting order parameters associated with the superconductor-insulator transition. Our results demonstrate that the ultrathin superconducting Mo2C crystals provide an interesting system for studying rich transport phenomena in a 2D crystalline superconductor with enhanced quantum fluctuations.

Hidden frustrated interactions and quantum annealing in trapped-ion spin-phonon chains

We show that a trapped ion chain interacting with an optical spin-dependent force shows strong frustration effects due to the interplay between long-range interactions and the dressing by optical phases. We consider a strong spin-phonon coupling regime and predict a quantum phase diagram with different competing magnetic and structural orders. In a highly frustrated region, the system shows enhanced quantum fluctuations and entanglement characteristic of spin-liquid phases. We propose and describe within a mean-field approach a quantum annealing process to induce a quasi-adiabatic evolution towards the ground state.
