In-Situ Observation of Adsorption Species on Platinum Catalyst in Oxygen Reduction Reaction Using High Energy Resolution XAFS

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Pt surfaces, for examples, Pt single crystals, polycrystalline Pt electrodes, Pt nanoparticles (NPs), Pt-based alloys, and core–shell Pt nanostructures, has been discussed in the last few decades.In polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), hydrogen peroxide and its radicals are known to be fatal attacking species not only for electrode catalysts but also for carbon materials and polymer membranes.A thorough understanding of ORR schemes has led to the development of seamless four-electron reduction cathodes, contributing to improved endurance reliability of both anion-exchange membrane (AEM) and proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells.In this study, the reaction pathway, and intermediate species such as molecular oxygen, in the ORR were investigated in alkaline and acidic environments, respectively.In this work, High Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detection X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) at the Pt L III-edge, which enhances resolution by partially collecting fluorescent X-ray was employed.X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) can detect the electronic structure of Pt, and its high energy resolution makes it possible to distinguish between different adsorption species on the surface of Pt nanoparticles.In addition, photon-in photon-out experiments using hard X-ray with high penetrating ability make it relatively easy to perform in-situ/operando measurements in potential controlled solutions.Carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles as powder catalysts were used for measurement as more realistic conditions, and the species adsorbed on the Pt nanoparticles were analyzed while controlling under the potentials both in acidic and basic electrolyte solutions with N2 or O2 gas bubbling.In N2-saturated solutions, the XANES spectra of the Pt LIII-edge reflected the presence of the adsorption species such as Pt-O (*O), Pt-OH (*OH), Pt-H (*H), as well as PtO2 oxide and Pt metallic states without any adsorption, during the ORR with the potential change.In O2-saturated solutions, one additional adsorption species of molecular oxygen was observed in both acidic and basic electrolyte solutions. It was analyzed that the intermediate species adsorbed to platinum in a side-on configuration as a superoxide anion in an alkaline environment.This intermediate species is identified as hydrogen superoxide, also known as hydroperoxyl radical, with the chemical formula HO2 by being protonated in an acidic environment.The results of research on adsorption species using HERFD-XAS have provided important knowledge for designing catalysts that enable seamless four-electron reduction.The preferred cathode catalyst design will be discussed in detail in an oral presentation at the 244th ECS Meeting. Deconvoluting Cr states in Cr-doped UO2 nuclear fuels via bulk and single crystal spectroscopic studies

Cr-doped UO2 is a leading accident tolerant nuclear fuel where the complexity of Cr chemical states in the bulk material has prevented acquisition of an unequivocal understanding of the redox chemistry and mechanism for incorporation of Cr in the UO2 matrix. To resolve this, we have used electron paramagnetic resonance, high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption near energy structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopic measurements to examine Cr-doped UO2 single crystal grains and bulk material. Ambient condition measurements of the single crystal grains, which have been mechanically extracted from bulk material, indicated Cr is incorporated substitutionally for U+4 in the fluorite lattice as Cr+3 with formation of additional oxygen vacancies. Bulk material measurements reveal the complexity of Cr states, where metallic Cr (Cr0) and oxide related Cr+2 and Cr+32O3 were identified and attributed to grain boundary species and precipitates, with concurrent (Cr+3xU+41-x)O2-0.5x lattice matrix incorporation. The deconvolution of chemical states via crystal vs. powder measurements enables the understanding of discrepancies in literature whilst providing valuable direction for safe continued use of Cr-doped UO2 fuels for nuclear energy generation.

Gold speciation in hydrothermal fluids revealed by in situ high energy resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Abstract Gold mobilization, transfer, and concentration in the Earth’s crust are controlled by hydrothermal sulfur- and chloride-bearing fluids. Yet the exact chemical identity, structure, and stability of Au-bearing species and, in particular, the respective contributions of the sulfide (HS−) and trisulfur ion (S3⋅−) ligands to Au transport lack direct in situ evidence. Here we employed high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) on aqueous sulfate/sulfide/S3⋅−-bearing solutions at typical hydrothermal temperatures and pressures (T = 350 °C, P = 600 bar) to reveal differences in dissolved Au spectral signatures indicative of contrasting fluid-phase Au speciation as a function of acidity and redox conditions. Combined with in situ Au solubility measurements and quantum-chemical and thermodynamic modeling, our spectroscopic data provide direct evidence for the Au(HS)S3− and Au(HS)2− complexes predominant at acidic-to-neutral and alkaline conditions, respectively. Our findings thus directly confirm a recent speciation scheme for Au in aqueous S-bearing fluids established using less direct methods, and highlight an important role of the trisulfur ion in gold mobilization and concentration in hydrothermal-magmatic deposits associated with subduction zones. More generally, our results show that HERFD-XAS enables the identification of structural and coordination features in metal complexes virtually unresolvable using classical XAS techniques. By avoiding limitations of less direct techniques, our integrated high-resolution spectroscopic approach opens perspectives for studies of the speciation and solubility of gold and other metals in high T-P fluids, and potentially silicate melts, inaccessible to direct observation in nature.

Photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy at the I20-scanning beamline at diamond light source

A scanning multi-crystal x-ray emission spectrometer to perform photon-in/photon-out spectroscopy at the I20-Scanning beamline at Diamond Light Source is described. The instrument, equipped with three analyzer crystals, is based on a 1 m Rowland circle spectrometer operating in the vertical plane. The energy resolution of the spectrometer is of the order of 1 eV, having sufficient resolving power to overcome the core-hole lifetime broadening of most of the transition metals K-edges. Examples showing the capability of the beamline for performing high energy resolution fluorescence detection x-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS), non-resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy are presented. The comparison of the Zn and Mn K-edge HERFD–XANES of ZnO and MnO with ab initio calculations shows that the technique provides enhanced validation of the models by making subtle spectral features more visible.

Hard X-ray spectroscopic methods using emitted X-ray to understand charge compensation in positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries

We examined the applicabilities of hard X-ray spectroscopic methods to understand the charge-compensation (CC) behaviors of Ni in a LiNiO2-based positive electrode (PE) material for lithium-ion batteries: Ni K pre-edge high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Ni 1s2p resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES). Both methods exhibited sequential changes in spectral features with the change in the state of charge of the PE material, similarly to Ni L2,3-edge XAS. This elucidates that these hard X-ray spectroscopic methods can become alternatives to soft X-ray L2,3-edge XAS with the additional ability to measure reactive samples kept in a sealed pouch. Moreover, Ni 1s2p RXES can separate the electronic transition to the unoccupied Ni orbital from those to hybridized orbitals with neighboring atoms by tuning the incident X-ray energy. In this sense, it can provide spectral information reflecting the unoccupied Ni 3d state, which could be a good oxidation-state descriptor. These methods can be done in a usual hard X-ray beamline having an appropriate crystal analyzer. The ability to offer information on the unoccupied 3d state with hard X-ray and the ubiquitous feature of these methods would prompt in situ/operando studies on CC in PE materials for rational materials development.

New insight in the uranium valence state determination in UyNd1−yO2±x

The charge compensation mechanisms in UyNd1−yO2±x and its consequence on the overall O stoichiometry (or O/M ratio where M = Nd + U) have been studied through the uranium valence state mixture evolution as a function of Nd content up to y = 0.62 by means of high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) at the U M4-edge. Our results clearly demonstrate the formation of U5+ at low Nd content (y < 0.15). Upon increasing the Nd content, oxygen vacancies and the formation of U6+ appear as competing mechanisms for intermediate Nd concentrations, leading to the co-existence of U4+/U5+/U6+ mixed valence and an overall hypostoichiometry (O/M < 2.00). Finally, the formation of U6+ associated with strongly distorted U local environment is observed for high Nd concentrations (y = 0.62), leading to an overall hyperstoichiometry (O/M < 2.00).

Vertical changes of the Co and Mn speciation along a lateritic regolith developed on peridotites (New Caledonia)

Because they can host significant amounts of Co, the Mn-oxides are commonly considered as the major Co-bearing mineral species in lateritic environments. However, little is known about the process leading to the formation and/or the weathering of these Co-rich Mn-oxides. This lack of knowledge is mainly due to the fact that Co concentrations are too low in primary silicates for classical speciation analysis. In this study, we investigated both Co and Mn speciation in a 64m thick lateritic regolith developed upon peridotites in New Caledonia, by combining High Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detection X-ray absorption Near Edge Structure (HERFD-XANES) spectroscopy at the Co K-edge with classical XANES spectroscopy at the Mn K-edge, bulk chemistry (ICP) and mineralogy (XRD). The results obtained provide new insights into the evolution of Co and Mn speciation as a function of the weathering stages. Co and Mn primarily occur as Co(II) and Mn(II,III) in olivine and serpentine in the bedrock. During the first weathering stage, these forms of Co and Mn are progressively oxidized toward Co(III) and Mn(III,IV), which occur mainly as Co(III)-bearing Mn(III/IV)-oxides in the transition between the saprolite and the laterite. In the uppermost lateritic horizons, long-time weathering resulted in a strong leaching of Co and Mn, and the remaining of these elements occurs as Co(II) and Mn(III) substituting for Fe(III) in goethite. This latter scavenging process emphasizes the importance of Fe-oxides for the long-term stabilization of Co and Mn in such deeply weathered laterites.

Evolution of the Uranium Chemical State in Mixed-Valence Oxides.

A fundamental question concerning the chemical state of uranium in the binary oxides UO2, U4O9, U3O7, U3O8, and UO3 is addressed. By utilizing high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (HERFD-XANES) at the uranium M4 edge, a novel technique in the tender X-ray region, we obtain the distribution of formal oxidation states in the mixed-valence oxides U4O9, U3O7, and U3O8. Moreover, we clearly identify a pivot from U(IV)-U(V) to U(V)-U(VI) charge compensation, corresponding with transition from a fluorite-type structure (U3O7) to a layered structure (U3O8). Such physicochemical properties are of interest to a broad audience of researchers and engineers active in domains ranging from fundamental physics to nuclear industry and environmental science.

Wetting Induced Oxidation of Pt-based Nano Catalysts Revealed by In Situ High Energy Resolution X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

In situ high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS) was used to systematically evaluate interactions of H2O and O2 adsorbed on Pt and Pt3Co nanoparticle catalysts in different particle sizes. The systematic increase in oxidation due to adsorption of different species (H2O adsorption <O2 adsorption <O2 + H2O coadsorption) suggests that cooperative behavior between O2 and H2O adsorptions is responsible for the overpotential induced by hydrated species in fuel cells. From the alloying and particle size effects, it is found that both strength of O2/H2O adsorption and their cooperative effect upon coadsorption are responsible for the specific activity of Pt catalysts.

Experimental evidence of Xe incorporation in Schottky defects in UO2

We report here the direct experimental observation of the preferential xenon incorporation site in uranium dioxide and analyse how its incorporation evolves with the annealing temperature. We show that High Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detection X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure in combination with first-principles calculations enable a precise determination of the Xe incorporation site. Our finding provides important insight for the understanding and modeling of noble gases behavior in nuclear oxide fuel.

Balance of Nanostructure and Bimetallic Interactions in Pt Model Fuel Cell Catalysts: In Situ XAS and DFT Study

We have studied the effect of nanostructuring in Pt monolayer model electrocatalysts on a Rh(111) single-crystal substrate on the adsorption strength of chemisorbed species. In situ high energy resolution fluorescence detection X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Pt L(3) edge reveals characteristic changes of the shape and intensity of the "white-line" due to chemisorption of atomic hydrogen (H(ad)) at low potentials and oxygen-containing species (O/OH(ad)) at high potentials. On a uniform, two-dimensional Pt monolayer grown by Pt evaporation in ultrahigh vacuum, we observe a significant destabilization of both H(ad) and O/OH(ad) due to strain and ligand effects induced by the underlying Rh(111) substrate. When Pt is deposited via a wet-chemical route, by contrast, three-dimensional Pt islands are formed. In this case, strain and Rh ligand effects are balanced with higher local thickness of the Pt islands as well as higher defect density, shifting H and OH adsorption energies back toward pure Pt. Using density functional theory, we calculate O adsorption energies and corresponding local ORR activities for fcc 3-fold hollow sites with various local geometries that are present in the three-dimensional Pt islands.

Degradation of Bimetallic Model Electrocatalysts: An In Situ X‐Ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study

One of the major challenges in the development of clean energy fuel cells is the performance degradation of the electrocatalyst, which, apart from poisoning effects, can suffer from corrosion due to its exposure to a harsh environment under high potentials. In this communication, we demonstrate how interactions of Pt with a transition metal support affect not only, as commonly intended, the catalytic activity, but also the reactivity of Pt towards oxide formation or dissolution. We use two well-defined single-crystal model systems, Pt/Rh(111) and Pt/Au(111) and a unique x-ray spectroscopy technique with enhanced energy resolution to monitor the potential-dependent oxidation state of Pt, and find two markedly different oxidation mechanisms on the two different substrates. This information can be of great significance for future design of more active and more stable catalysts. We have studied the potential-induced degradation of Pt monolayer model electrocatalysts on Rh(111) and Au(111) single-crystal substrates. The anodic formation of Pt oxides was monitored using in situ high energy resolution fluorescence detection x-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD XAS). Although Pt was deposited on both substrates in a three-dimensional island growth mode, we observed remarkable differences during oxide formation that can only be understood in terms of strong Pt-substrate interactionsmore » throughout the Pt islands.
