Effects of cognitive load on food approach bias in individuals with binge eating disorder.
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • Appetite
  • Dustin Werle + 3 more

While the hierarchical model of approach-avoidance motivation suggests a heightened food-specific approach behavior for individuals with binge eating disorder (BED), empirical evidence does not confirm the postulated food approach bias. This discrepancy may be related to the studied samples, which were partially in treatment, but also to the fact that previous studies tested for an approach bias under low cognitive load. Therefore, the present study assessed the food-specific approach behavior in an untreated sample with BED under high and low cognitive load, in comparison to a weight-matched and a normal weight control group. To this end, 50 individuals with BED, 20 individuals with overweight and 21 individuals with normal weight completed an approach avoidance task. In each trial, participants were instructed to either push or pull a slider device, dependent on the orientation of an arrow, which was superimposed on a picture. The underlying picture either depicted a high calorie food item or a neutral stimulus. Cognitive load was manipulated by two flanking arrows that either pointed in the same or the opposite direction to the task-relevant central arrow. First, and contrary to our hypothesis, the food-specific approach bias was not stronger in the group with BED compared to both control groups. Post-hoc tests further revealed no food-specific approach bias in any of the three groups. Moreover, and contrary to our hypothesis, cognitive load did not show a group specific impact on the food approach behavior. However, cognitive load did increase the food approach behavior across groups. The results of this study, in conjunction with previous studies suggest, that there is no clear food approach bias in individuals with BED, at least when movement direction is not explicitly contingent on picture content.

Accessibility and service quality as predictors of tourist satisfaction and revisit intention among persons with disabilities in Saudi Arabia.
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • Acta psychologica
  • Faisl M Alqraini + 1 more

Accessible tourism has emerged as a national priority within Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 agenda, yet empirical evidence on the psychological mechanisms linking accessibility to tourist behavior remains limited. This study examines how accessibility barriers and service quality predict satisfaction and revisit intention among persons with disabilities, drawing on Expectancy-Disconfirmation Theory. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using purposive and snowball sampling, yielding responses from 173 participants across 11 regions. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, multiple regression, and bootstrapped mediation analyses were conducted. Accessibility barriers were negatively associated with perceived service comprehensiveness and satisfaction, whereas inclusive service practices were positively linked to emotional evaluations and behavioral intentions. Satisfaction emerged as the strongest predictor of revisit intention and significantly mediated the effects of accessibility and service quality on loyalty outcomes. These findings highlight the central role of satisfaction in shaping tourism behavior and offer theoretical and practical insights that support ongoing national efforts to advance inclusive and accessible tourism within the framework of Vision 2030.

The involvement of endogenous brain rhythms in speech processing.
  • Apr 1, 2026

  • Tanja Atanasova + 3 more

Endogenous brain rhythms are at the core of oscillation-based neurobiological theories of speech. These brain rhythms have been proposed to play a crucial role in speech segmentation, attention allocation, and the temporal and spectral processes involved in speech perception. Despite the strong theoretical foundations of oscillatory models, direct empirical evidence for their involvement in speech processing remains limited, partly due to the challenge of distinguishing endogenous rhythms from responses to external stimuli. We review prominent oscillation-based theories (dynamic attending, active sensing, asymmetric sampling in time, and segmentation theories) and the supporting empirical evidence from electrophysiological and brain stimulation studies. Finally, we suggest potential directions for future research that could clarify the contributions of endogenous rhythms to speech processing.

Impact of ESG disclosure on green innovation in construction enterprises: empirical evidence from chinese listed companies
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering
  • Ru Fa + 3 more

Environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) is an important criterion for measuring corporate sustainability. ESG disclosure is beneficial for promoting green innovation in construction companies. Using data from listed construction companies on the Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share markets between 2010 and 2023, this study employs linear regression analysis and a two-way fixed-effects model to examine the impact of ESG disclosure on green innovation. Results indicate that ESG disclosure significantly enhances green innovation in construction companies, with each unit increase in ESG disclosure raising green innovation by 1.666 units (p < 0.05). Further research reveals that ESG disclosure can significantly enhance green innovation in construction companies through new quality productivity forces (NQPFs). Internal control and environmental regulation have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between ESG disclosure and green innovation in construction companies, with environmental regulation exerting a slightly stronger moderating effect than internal control. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the impact of ESG disclosure on green innovation in construction companies is more pronounced among state-owned enterprises, small enterprises, enterprises in central China, and the building decoration industry. This study's findings provide a theoretical basis and practical implications for government policymaking and promotion of green innovation in construction companies.

We discuss willful ignorance and information avoidance in prosocial decisions from the perspective of economic theory, i.e. based on the ideas of utility maximization and the instrumental value of information. We provide a definition of information avoidance, empirical evidence from a paradigmatic experiment, and discuss the motives behind the phenomenon. We discuss its relevance in applications and avenues for future research.

When Profit Outweighs Sustainability: Empirical Evidence from ESG and Firm Value in Indonesia Energy Industry
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • Jurnal EMT KITA
  • Dita Eka Pertiwi Sirait + 2 more

This study aims to examine the role of sustainability and profitability in influencing firm value within Indonesia’s energy sector listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the 2022–2024 period. Sustainability performance is measured using the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) disclosure score, while profitability is represented by the Return on Assets (ROA). Firm value is proxied by Tobin’s Q ratio. The research sample consists of 32 energy companies selected using a purposive sampling method. Data analysis is conducted using panel data regression with the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) and the Generalized Least Squares (GLS) approach with cross-section weighting to address potential heteroskedasticity issues. The results reveal that ESG disclosure has no significant effect on firm value, whereas profitability exerts a positive and significant influence. Simultaneously, ESG and profitability jointly have a significant impact on firm value. These findings indicate that investors in Indonesia’s energy sector remain more focused on profitability as the primary determinant of firm value, while sustainability performance has yet to become a key consideration in investment decisions. This study contributes to the ongoing discussion on the integration of ESG factors into firm valuation, particularly within emerging market contexts such as Indonesia.

The Prevalence and Use of Teaching Philosophy Statements in Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review.
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • The clinical teacher
  • Steven D Taff + 3 more

Teaching philosophy statements (TPS) are concise, reflective narratives that articulate an educator's beliefs, values and approaches to teaching and learning. In health professions education, TPS can serve as tools for promotion and tenure, teaching portfolios and professional identity formation. Despite their potential to enhance reflective practice and teaching effectiveness, the prevalence and application of TPS in health professions education remain unclear. A scoping review was conducted in which six databases were searched for English-language peer-reviewed articles published from 2003 to 2024. Inclusion criteria required that articles address health professions education, include the concept of philosophy and reference an educational process. Data extraction included publication characteristics, educational and career contexts and described uses of TPS. Fourteen articles met inclusion criteria, representing medicine, nursing, basic sciences, occupational therapy, medical sciences and interprofessional education. Thirteen journals were represented; eight articles were research-focused, with the remainder descriptive, theoretical or narrative reviews. Most commonly, TPS were described as artefacts for teaching portfolios (n = 8), reflective guides (n = 7) or components of promotion packets (n = 6). Few studies examined the impact of TPS on teaching effectiveness, learner outcomes or faculty development. TPS appear infrequently in the health professions education literature and are often discussed superficially. While recognised for their reflective and professional development potential, empirical evidence of their direct impact is lacking. Future research should explore longitudinal effects of TPS adoption, their role in faculty identity development and strategies for integrating TPS meaningfully into faculty development programmes.

Energy poverty consequences of aggressive tobacco tax policies.
  • Apr 1, 2026
  • Social science & medicine (1982)
  • Mohammadhossein Hadi + 2 more

This paper presents the first empirical evidence linking tobacco tax policies to unintended social consequences in the form of increased energy poverty. We focus on Australia, where smokers face some of the world's highest cigarette prices. We analyse an unanticipated aggressive tax regime implemented in 2010 using a difference-in-differences approach with a nationally representative panel dataset covering 14 years. Our findings indicate significant increases in the incidence of energy poverty among smoking households. Relative to the smoking cohort's pre-policy mean, subjective reports of heating difficulties rose by 24%, while objective measures increased by 38% (10% energy-burden threshold), 15% (twice-median burden), and 26% under the Low-Income High Costs (LIHC) measure. Mechanism analyses indicate that reduced energy expenditures and compromised financial stability exacerbate the observed energy poverty. The impacts were particularly pronounced among lower-income families, heavy smokers, and individuals who find quitting hard. This research highlights the complex trade-offs involved in aggressive tobacco taxation and emphasises the need for targeted measures to mitigate the negative consequences on the energy well-being of vulnerable smokers and their families.
