Analysis of uncertainty in measurement of electron temperature in low-pressure inductively coupled plasmas using microwave cutoff probe

Abstract In this study, we performed electron temperature measurements by using a square cutoff probe. Further, the measurement uncertainty was comprehensively analysed. The square cutoff probe allows for the measurement of the electron temperature based on the measured electron series resonance frequency and that of the electron plasma frequency based on the transmission spectrum of the plasma. The electron temperatures were determined under varying gas pressures and input power conditions, and the results were compared with those obtained using a single Langmuir probe. Also, the impact of electron-neutral collision frequency on electron temperature measurement using square cutoff probe was analyzed based on a plasma equivalent circuit model. The square cutoff probe is expected to serve as a valuable diagnostic tool for the precise characterisation of electron temperature, offering localised, accurate, and easily interpretable features.

Electron Temperatures in the Venusian Ionosphere From Parker Solar Probe Using Quasi‐Thermal Noise Spectroscopy

AbstractParker Solar Probe (PSP) uses Venus gravity assists (VGA) to achieve the closest orbits to the Sun by a spacecraft. During the third (VGA3) and fourth (VGA4) Venus gravity assists, the PSP entered the Venusian ionosphere. The core electrons could not be detected as they were below the SWEAP/SPAN electrostatic analyzer instrument energy threshold. However, there is another way to estimate the core temperature using quasi‐thermal noise (QTN) data measured by the PSP/FIELDS Radio Frequency Spectrometer instrument. QTN spectroscopy offers an effective tool for measuring electron temperature and density when the electrons are too cold for other instruments to measure, as is the case with VGA3 and VGA4. Low‐frequency plasma wave data from the closest approach during VGA3 and VGA4 was analyzed with the QTN spectroscopy technique to determine the density and first‐ever in‐situ thermal electron temperature of the Venusian ionosphere at solar minimum.

Detection of Internal Transport Barrier in the T-10 Tokamak Using Thomson Scattering Diagnostics

At the T-10 tokamak, the Thomson scattering diagnostics was upgraded in 2016. The new system is based on the Nd: YAG laser with the pulse repetition frequency of 100 Hz; the measurements can be performed every 10 ms during the entire plasma discharge at the spatial resolution of up to 5 mm. Using the upgraded diagnostics, the electron temperature measurements were performed during experimental campaigns of the T-10 tokamak in 2016—2018. In the regimes with the electron cyclotron resonance heating, it was demonstrated that the regions with increased temperature gradients form in the plasma, which was interpreted as the formation of internal transport barrier. The ASTRA-code-based simulations of the current profile time evolution made it possible to correlate the positions of the barrier and the rational surface q = 1.

Current, core channel radius, and related parameters of channel plasma in artificially triggered lightning

Based on plasma physics methods, the relationship among the channel current (i), core channel radius (rcc), and other related parameters including electrical conductivity (σ), thermal conductivity (λe), and thermal diffusion coefficient (DeT) was investigated and strong interdependence was found among these parameters. Then, these dependent relationships together with the measured electron temperature (Te) and electron density (ne), derived from spectral diagnostics, were applied to determine the measured results on the i, rcc, σ, λe, and DeT of channel plasma in artificially triggered lightning along with their measured accuracies. Good accordance can be found with the aid of comparisons with other measurements of the artificially triggered lightning [L. Cai et al., J. Electrost. 109, 103537 (2021)].

First Thomson scattering results from AWAKE’s helicon plasma source

Abstract We present the first results of electron density and temperature measurements obtained from Thomson scattering at the helicon plasma source (HPS) for the AWAKE project. These measurements are compared to simulation results from a 1D power and particle balance model (PPM), confirming that the plasma can be fully sustained by collisional power dissipation. The variations in plasma parameters under different experimental conditions are evaluated in the PPM framework. We discuss current limitations of the model and propose possible improvements. Additionally, we suggest modifications to the existing HPS setup to enhance axial plasma homogeneity.

Bayesian-inverted laser Thomson scattering measurements indicate electrostatic erosion pathways in magnetically-shielded Hall effect thrusters

Magnetically shielded Hall effect thrusters suffer from pole erosion as their life-limiting mechanism. However, the dominant physical mechanism causing this erosion remains unclear, limiting the ability create designs that mitigate erosion and the predictive accuracy of simulations used to aid in design. This paper provides spatially resolved laser Thomson scattering measurements of electron temperature and density in the near field plume of a magnetically shielded Hall effect thruster, traversing the front pole region from the discharge channel centerline to the cathode centerline. The signals are inverted in a Bayesian framework, and the data are compared qualitatively and quantitatively to simulations of the same Hall effect thruster. Based on the electron momentum equation, electron pressure gradient is used as a proxy for the electron-predicted electrostatic potential gradient. To within the accuracy of this approximation, the electron pressure has a minimum immediately in front of the front pole. Hence, ions have an electrostatic potential avenue from the discharge region to the front pole, validating this mechanism of pole erosion.

Tokamak edge-SOL turbulence in H-mode conditions simulated with a global, electromagnetic, transcollisional drift-fluid model

Abstract The design of commercially feasible magnetic confinement fusion reactors strongly relies on the reduced turbulent transport in the plasma edge during operation in the high confinement mode (H-mode). We present first global turbulence simulations of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak edge and scrape-off layer in ITER baseline H-mode conditions. Reasonable agreement with the experiment is obtained for outboard mid-plane measurements of plasma density, electron and ion temperature, as well as the radial electric field. The radial heat transport is underpredicted by roughly 1/3. These results were obtained with the GRILLIX code implementing a transcollisional, electromagnetic, global drift-fluid plasma model, coupled to diffusive neutrals. The transcollisional extensions include neoclassical corrections for the ion viscosity, as well as either a Landau-fluid or free-streaming limited model for the parallel heat conduction. Electromagnetic fluctuations are found to play a critical role in H-mode conditions. We investigate the structure of the significant E × B flow shear, finding both neoclassical components as well as zonal flows. But unlike in L-mode, geodesic acoustic modes are not observed. The turbulence mode structure is mostly that of drift-Alfvén waves. However, in the upper part of the pedestal, it is very weak and overshadowed by neoclassical transport. At the pedestal foot, on the other hand, we find instead the (electromagnetic) kinetic ballooning mode, most clearly just inside the separatrix. Our results pave the way towards predictive simulations of fusion reactors.

Development and Testing of a Helicon Plasma Thruster Based on a Magnetically Enhanced Inductively Coupled Plasma Reactor Operating in a Multi-Mode Regime

A disruptive Electric Propulsion system is proposed for next-generation Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) small satellite constellations, utilizing an RF-powered Helicon Plasma Thruster (HPT). This system is built around a Magnetically Enhanced Inductively Coupled Plasma (MEICP) reactor, which enables acceleration of quasi-neutral plasma through a magnetic nozzle. The MEICP reactor features an innovative design with a multi-dipole magnetic confinement system, generated by neodymium iron boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets, combined with an azimuthally asymmetric half-wavelength right (HWRH) antenna and a variable-section ionization chamber. The plasma reactor is followed by a solenoid-free magnetic nozzle (MN), which facilitates the formation of an ambipolar potential drop, enabling the conversion of electron thermal energy into ion beam energy. This study explores the impact of an inhomogeneous magnetic field on the heating mechanism of the HPT and highlights its multi-mode operation within a pulsed power range of 200 to 500 W of RF. The discharge state, characterized by high-energy electron-excited ions and low-energy excited neutral particles in the plasma plume, was analyzed using optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The experimental testing campaign, conducted under pulsed power excitation, reveals that, as RF input power increases, the MEICP reactor transitions from inductive (H-mode) to wave coupling (W-mode) discharge modes. Spectrograms, electron temperature, and plasma density measurements were obtained for the Helicon Plasma Thruster within its operational envelope. Based on OES data, the ideal specific impulse was estimated to exceed 1000 s, highlighting the significant potential of this technology for future LEO/VLEO space missions.

Real-time measurement of electron temperature using a coupled centre-tapped emissive probe and a Langmuir probe (CCTELP)

Abstract Conventional electrostatic probes are commonly used for measuring the plasma parameters like plasma density, electron temperature, plasma potential and floating potential respectively in a laboratory plasma to unveil physical processes of relevance to magnetosphere and fusion plasmas. With such probes, real-time measurement of electron temperature and its fluctuating AC component becomes very difficult. These measurements are significant as they directly give the measure of energy flux and hence can be utilized in estimating the turbulence-induced energy loss in any plasma system, especially useful for electron temperature gradient plasmas. Although Triple Langmuir Probe (TLP) diagnostics provide information on real-time measurement of electron temperature, this involves many complications. These complications of TLP are suitably overcome by the proposed diagnostic, which makes use of a combination of a closely separated centre tap emissive probe (CTEP) and Langmuir probe (LP) installed on a single probe head. The coupled centre-tapped emissive and Langmuir probe (CCTELP) provides direct measurement of electron temperature (T_e) and its fluctuations (T ̃_e). The design of the proposed diagnostic is very simple and it is almost free of rigorous control electronics and post-data analysis otherwise needed to estimate the electron temperature. These features make this diagnostic an additional and simple candidate for real-time measurement of electron temperature and its fluctuation. The paper will highlight details on this novel diagnostics, called CCTELP for the measurement in Maxwellian plasmas.

Analysis of an induced Langmuir wave by ponderomotive forces and its applicability for plasma diagnostics

We present a numerical study on the electron and ion density perturbation in low-temperature plasmas driven by the frequency detuning of two intense laser beams. Our study is performed in the hydrodynamic regime, which becomes applicable when the plasma grating period induced by the beating of the laser beams is greater than the Debye length and collective processes such as plasma oscillations can be excited. Our findings show a resonance in electron density perturbation as the frequency detuning approaches a value consistent with the Bohm–Gross dispersion relation in low- and high-pressure plasmas. We discuss the potential of this resonance as a diagnostic tool for precisely measuring electron temperature and density in low-temperature plasmas through coherent scattering.

Enhancing Thomson scattering polychromator performance with multi-pass spectral filters.

In photon-deficient, noncollective Thomson scattering diagnostics, filter polychromators are typically employed in the spectral analysis of Thomson-scattered signals to achieve acceptable signal-to-noise performance. Currently, the most common polychromator filter configuration employs a set of single-passband optical filters that define individual spectral channels. Here, we introduce a new spectral analysis method for Thomson scattering based on spectral filters with multiple passbands, referred to as Thomson scattering spectral multiplexing. Implementing multi-bandpass spectral filters on polychromators increases the achievable range of electron temperature measurement for a given number of filters employed. In addition, Thomson scattering spectral multiplexing reduces systematic measurement uncertainty, with fewer required spectral channels, thereby decreasing light loss from reduced optical element interactions. A multi-bandpass filter set, optimized by a genetic algorithm, has been successfully installed and tested on the Helically Symmetric eXperiment (HSX), demonstrating the benefits of the Thomson scattering spectral multiplexing method.

Design of a Thomson scattering diagnostic for the SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART).

We describe the design of a Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostic to be used on the SMall Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART). SMART is a spherical tokamak being commissioned in Spain that aims to explore positive triangularity and negative triangularity plasma scenarios at a low aspect ratio. The SMART TS diagnostic is designed to operate at high spatial resolution, 6mm scattering length in the low-field side and 9mm in the high-field side regions, and a wide dynamic range, electron temperature from 1eV to 1keV and density from 5×1018m-3 to 1×1020m-3, to resolve large gradients formed at the plasma edge and in the scrape-off layer (SOL) under different triangularities and low aspect ratios. A 2J @1064 nm laser will be used that is capable of operating in the burst mode at 1, 2, and 4kHz to investigate fast phenomena and at 30Hz to study 1s (or more) long discharges. The scattered light will be collected over an angular range of 60° - 120° from 28 spatial points in the midplane covering the entire plasma width and the outer midplane SOL. Each scattering signal will be spectrally resolved on five wavelength channels of a polychromator to obtain the electron temperature measurement. We will also present a method to monitor in situ laser alignment in the core during calibrations and plasma operations.

Perpendicular Electrical Conductivity in the Topside Ionosphere Derived from Swarm Measurements

The study of the physical properties of the topside ionosphere is fundamental to investigating the energy balance of the ionosphere and developing accurate models to predict relevant phenomena, which are often at the root of Space Weather effects in the near-Earth environment. One of the most important physical parameters characterising the ionospheric medium is electrical conductivity, which is crucial for the onset and amplification of ionospheric currents and for calculating the power density dissipated by such currents. We characterise, for the first time, electrical conductivity in the direction perpendicular to the geomagnetic field, namely Pedersen and Hall conductivities, in the topside ionosphere at an altitude of about 450 km. For this purpose, we use eight years of in situ simultaneous measurements of electron density, electron temperature and geomagnetic field strength acquired by the Swarm A satellite. We present global statistical maps of perpendicular electrical conductivity and study their variations depending on magnetic latitude and local time, seasons, and solar activity. Our findings indicate that the most prominent features of perpendicular electrical conductivity are located at low latitudes and are probably driven by the complex dynamics of the Equatorial Ionisation Anomaly. At higher latitudes, perpendicular conductivity is a few orders of magnitude lower than that at low latitudes. Nevertheless, conductivity features are modulated by solar activity and seasonal variations at all latitudes.

In situ measurement of electron emission yield at Si and SiO2 surfaces exposed to Ar/CF4 plasmas

Abstract Plasma simulations require accurate yield data to predict the electron flux that is emitted when plasma-exposed surfaces are bombarded by energetic particles. One can measure yields directly using particle beams, but it is impractical to create a separate beam of each particle produced by typical plasmas. In contrast, measurements made in situ, during plasma exposure, provide useful values for the total emitted flux and effective yield produced by all incident particles. Here, in situ measurements were made at thermally oxidized and bare silicon wafers placed on the radio-frequency (rf) biased electrode of an inductively coupled plasma system. The rf current and voltage across the sheath at the wafer were measured, along with Langmuir probe measurements of ion current density and electron temperature. The measurements are input into a numerical sheath model, which allows the emitted electron current to be distinguished from other currents. The effective yield, i.e. the ratio of the total emitted electron flux to the incident ion flux, was determined at incident ion energies from 40 eV to 1.4 keV, for Si and SiO2 surfaces in Ar, CF4, and Ar/CF4 mixtures at 1.33 Pa (10 mTorr). Yields for Ar plasmas are compared with previous work. For SiO2 surfaces in Ar/CF4 mixtures and pure CF4, the yield is dominated by ion kinetic emission, which is the same for all mixtures, and, presumably, for all ions. For Si surfaces in Ar/CF4 and CF4, the yield at high energies can be explained in part by fragmentation of molecular ions, and the yield from Ar+ can be distinguished from the other ionic species. Analytic fits of the yields are provided for use in plasma simulations.

Progress and challenges in the design of ITER's polarimetric Thomson scattering diagnostic system.

Polarimetric Thomson scattering (PTS) is a technique that allows for accurate measurements of electron temperature (Te) in very hot plasmas (Te > 10 keV, a condition expected to be regularly achieved in ITER). Under such conditions, the spectral region spanned by the TS spectrum is large and extends to low wavelengths, where the transmission of the collection optics decreases, available detectors are less efficient, and the high level of plasma background light perturbs the measurements. This work presents the recent developments in the design of a PTS system for ITER, along with the challenges posed by the complex machine design. The system performance is assessed for an updated geometry (with respect to previous publication), showing that, with a scattering angle θscat = 167°, the expected signal is strongly reduced. Potential alternatives are analyzed: (1) a system employing a different laser injection position, allowing for a more favorable scattering angle and (2) a recently proposed dual-polarization laser pulse technique. The latter is evaluated for the possible ITER geometry, again showing that a more favorable scattering angle is needed for a robust performance.

Inter-ELM pedestal turbulence dynamics dependence on q95 and temperature gradient

A series of dedicated experiments from the DIII-D tokamak provide spatially and temporally resolved measurements of electron density and temperature, and multiscale and multichannel fluctuations over a wide range of conditions. Measurements of long wavelength density fluctuations in the type-I ELMing H-mode pedestals routinely reveal a coexistence of multiple instabilities that exhibit dramatic different dynamic behaviors as q95 and temperature gradients are varied, apparently responsible for limiting pedestal temperature profiles. Two distinct frequency bands of density fluctuations are modulated by an ELM cycle with frequency above 200 kHz propagating in the electron diamagnetic direction in the lab frame (electron mode) and below 200 kHz propagating in the ion diamagnetic direction (ion mode). The electron mode amplitude peaks near the electron temperature gradient region and increases with q95 which seems to be correlated with the increased χe at higher q95, similar to the characteristics expected for the micro-tearing mode (MTM). At higher q95, during the inter-ELM period, the ion mode decays at the later phase of the ELM cycle. Consistently, the poloidal correlation length of the ion mode is also found to reduce, which suggests the possible E × B flow shear suppression of the ion mode at the later phase of the ELM cycle as the Er well recovers. In contrast, the electron mode grows during the ELM cycle and reaches saturation at around 50%–60% of the ELM period. Linear gyrokinetic simulations find the MTMs to be the most unstable mode in the pedestal electron temperature gradient region. The higher q95 and lower magnetic shear destabilize the MTMs. These observations provide key insights into the underlying physics of multifield properties and a rich dataset of experimental ‘fingerprints’ that enable new tests of theoretical pedestal models and lead to the development of a predictive model for pedestal formation on the ITER and future burning plasma experiments.

Soft x-ray diagnostics system for electron temperature measurement in the integrated commissioning phase of JT-60SA.

A soft x-ray (SX) diagnostic system has been designed and installed in JT-60SA for the first plasma. For quantitative measurement, the etendue of each viewing chord was evaluated analytically and numerically. The electron temperature is evaluated from the detected bremsstrahlung emission ratio between two detector arrays with two different thicknesses of Be filters. The two filter thicknesses were optimized to be 7 and 50μm for the expected electron temperature range of 0-3keV. The one-dimensional profile of SX emission is reconstructed from line integrated emission by the elliptic Abel inversion scheme. For a plasma discharge with a plasma current of 1 MA, a peaked electron temperature profile with about 800eV at the center is obtained. The total bremsstrahlung power was also evaluated using the electron temperature profile and the absolutely evaluated etendue of each viewing chord. In this evaluation, the bremsstrahlung power is around 10% of ohmic heating power.

Evaluation of the ion temperature in the WEST tokamak with ICRF heating

Accurate measurements of the ion and electron temperatures in tokamaks are essential for understanding the heating and transport properties of the plasma. While electron temperature measurements are readily available in most devices (e.g. with electron cyclotron emission or Thomson scattering diagnostics), ion temperature estimates usually require more sophisticated procedures such as charge-exchange recombination spectroscopy [1] or crystal spectroscopy [2]. In the absence of such dedicated ion temperature measurements, a technique often adopted in tokamak plasmas is to estimate the ion temperature by reverse engineering of the total neutron yield, assuming Maxwellian distributions for the ions. In the absence of external ion heating, this procedure is satisfactory since it mainly depends on the nuclear reaction cross sections and the bulk ion density, usually inferred from a combination of the electron density and the plasma dilution measurements. On the other hand, when Ion-Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ICRH) or Neutral-Beam Injection (NBI) is applied, the ion distribution functions are distorted and the Maxwellian representation used for the ion temperature estimate is not necessarily justified, typically leading to an overestimate of the thermal component of the ion temperature. By using a coupled wave / Fokker-Planck numerical solver to calculate the actual ion distribution functions under the influence of external heating and the resulting neutron yield, the fast and thermal components of the bulk ion distributions can be disentangled and a ‘thermal-only’ ion temperature consistent with the neutron measurements can be extracted. An example of this procedure for the WEST tokamak with ICRF heating will be presented and the differences between the results obtained with respect to the simplified Maxwellian-based procedure will be discussed.

CLASSY. IX. The Chemical Evolution of the Ne, S, Cl, and Ar Elements

To study the chemical evolution across cosmic epochs, we investigate Ne, S, Cl, and Ar abundance patterns in the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY). CLASSY comprises local star-forming galaxies (SFGs; 0.02 < z < 0.18) with enhanced star formation rates, making them strong analogues to high-z SFGs. With direct measurements of electron temperature, we derive accurate ionic abundances for all elements and assess ionization correction factors (ICFs) to account for unseen ions and derive total abundances. We find Ne/O, S/O, Cl/O, and Ar/O exhibit constant trends with gas-phase metallicity for 12+log(O/H) < 8.5 but significant correlation for Ne/O and Ar/O with metallicity for 12+log(O/H) > 8.5, likely due to ICFs. Thus, the applicability of the ICFs to integrated spectra of galaxies could bias results, underestimating true abundance ratios. Using CLASSY as a local reference, we assess the evolution of Ne/O, S/O, and Ar/O in galaxies at z > 3, finding no cosmic evolution of Ne/O, while the lack of direct abundance determinations for S/O and Ar/O can bias the interpretation of the evolution of these elements. We determine the fundamental metallicity relationship (FMR) for CLASSY and compare to the high-redshift FMR, finding no evolution. Finally, we perform the first mass–neon relationship analysis across cosmic epochs, finding a slight evolution to high Ne at later epochs. The robust abundance patterns of CLASSY galaxies and their broad range of physical properties provide essential benchmarks for interpreting the chemical enrichment of the early galaxies observed with the JWST.

Spatially averaged global model of HBr/Cl2 inductively coupled plasma discharges

The utilization of HBr/Cl2 mixed gas discharge in semiconductor etching processes has been a subject of analysis both experimentally and through simulations to understand its discharge characteristics. In this study, we have developed a model that extends the previous global model of the HBr/Cl2 plasma. The electron temperature and densities are solved in a self-consistent manner, while previous global model uses the measured electron temperature and electron density. Additionally, we have included further data on electron collision reactions to enhance accuracy. This model was then compared with experimental results obtained from pure HBr, pure Cl2, and HBr/Cl2 plasmas. The calculated results align well with the experimental findings within the margin of error. One notable observation from our study is the occurrence of an unusual phenomenon: as the HBr partial concentration increased, the Br+ ion flux initially increased until the ratio reached 0.5, after which it decreased. This behavior can be attributed to Br+ ions being predominantly produced through collisions between Br atoms and electrons. The dominant mechanisms for Br atom generation involve dissociations by Cl radicals, such as Br2 + Cl → Br + BrCl. Consequently, there exists an optimal flow rate at which the Br+ ion flux is maximized.
