Experimental and Analytical Study of Directional Isothermal Fatigue in Additively Manufactured Ti-TiB Metal Matrix Composites

Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are widely investigated for the cost-effective use of titanium (Ti) alloys in various aerospace applications. One of the AM techniques developed for such applications is plasma transferred arc solid free-form fabrication (PTA-SFFF). Materials manufactured through AM techniques often exhibit anisotropies in mechanical properties due to the layer-by-layer material build. In this regard, the present study investigates the isothermal directional fatigue of a Ti-TiB metal matrix composite (MMC) manufactured by PTA-SFFF. This investigation includes a rotating beam fatigue test in the fully reversed condition (stress ratio, R = −1), electron microscopy, and calculations for fatigue life predictions using Paris’ and modified Paris’ equations. The fatigue experiments were performed at 350 °C using specimen with the test axis oriented diagonally (45°) and parallel (90°) to the AM builds directions. The fatigue values from the current experiments along with literature data find that the Ti MMC manufactured via PTA-SFFF exhibit fatigue anisotropy reporting highest strength in 90° and lowest in perpendicular (0°) AM build directions. Furthermore, calculations were performed to evaluate the optimum values of the stress intensity modification factor (λ) for fatigue life prediction in 0°, 45°, and 90° AM build directions. It was found that for the specimens with 45°, and 90° AM build directions, the computed intensity modification factors were very similar. This suggests that the initial fatigue crack characteristics such as location, shape, and size were similar in both 45°, and 90° AM build directions. However, in 0° AM build direction, the computed stress intensity modification factor was different from that of the 45°, and 90° AM build directions. This indicates that the fatigue crack initiation at 0° AM build direction is different compared to the other two directions considered in this study. Moreover, the quality of fatigue life prediction was assessed by calculating R2 values for both Paris and modified Paris predictions. Using the R2 values, it was found that the fatigue life predictions made by the modified Paris equation resulted in improved prediction accuracy for all three builds, and the percentage improvement ranged from 30% to 60%. Additionally, electron microscopy investigations of 0°, 45°, and 90° AM build specimens revealed extensive damage to the TiB particle compared to the Ti matrix as well as frequent TiB clusters in all three AM build directions. These observations suggest that the spread of these TiB clusters plays a role in the fatigue anisotropy of Ti-TiB MMCs.

Green Synthesis of Metal-Doped ZnO Nanoparticles Using Bauhinia racemosa Lam. Extract and Evaluation of Their Photocatalysis and Biomedical Applications.

A fascinating problem in the fields of nanoscience and nanobiotechnology has recently emerged, and to tackle this, the production of metal oxide nanoparticles using plant extracts offers numerous benefits over traditional physicochemical methods. In the present investigation, ZnO nanoparticles were fabricated from Bauhinia racemosa Lam. (BR) leaves extract with various transition metal (TM) dopants (Ni, Mn, and Co). Plant leaves extract containing metal nitrate solutions were utilized as a precursor to synthesize the pristine and TM-doped ZnO nanoparticles. Structural, functional, optical, and surface properties of the fabricated samples were studied by using physicochemical and photoelectrochemical measurements. The organic pollutants tetracycline (TC), ampicillin (AMP), and amoxicillin (AMX) were used in the photocatalytic degradation assessment of the fabricated samples. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigation, the fabricated nanoparticles wurtzite crystal structure was verified. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis verified the existence of functional groups in the fabricated nanoparticles. The migration of electrons from the deep donor level and zinc interstitial to the Zn-defect and O-defect is related to the emission peaks seen at 468, 480, 534, and 450 nm in photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Co-ZnO nanoparticles demonstrated potent and excellent photocatalytic degradation performance for TC (91.09%), AMP (87.97%), and AMX (92.42%) antibiotics within 210, 180, and 150 min of visible light irradiation. Co-ZnO nanoparticles also demonstrated strong antimicrobial performance against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, and Bacillus subtilis. Further investigation of in vitro cytotoxic potential against the A549 cell line (IC50 = 24 ± 0.5 μg/mL) utilizing MTT assay and the free radical scavenging performance of Co-ZnO nanoparticles estimated by DPPH assay utilizing l-ascorbic acid as a reference was also performed. Anti-inflammatory potential is also reviewed by comparing it with the standard drug Diclofenac, and the maximum activity was obtained for Ni-ZnO nanoparticles (IC50 = 72.4 μg/mL).

Multiscale Regulation of Ordered PtCu Intermetallic Electrocatalyst for Highly Durable Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Transforming the Pt-M alloy into an ordered intermetallic is an effective strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity and stability toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the synthesis of nanosized intermetallics remains challenging. Herein, we report an efficient ORR electrocatalyst, consisting of a monodisperse nanosized PtCu intermetallic on hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (HMCS). As predicted by theoretical calculations, PtCu intermetallics exhibit beneficial electronic structure, with a low theoretical overpotential of 0.33 V and enhanced Cu stability. Resulting from the multiscale modulation of catalyst structure, the O-PtCu/HMCS catalyst delivers a high mass activity of 2.73 A cm-2Pt at 0.9 V and remarkable stability. Identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) investigations demonstrate that the rate of carbon corrosion is alleviated on HMCS, which contributes to the long-term durability. This work provides a promising design strategy for an ORR electrocatalyst, and the IL-TEM investigations offer new perspectives for the performance enhancement mechanism.

Ultra-high dilutions analysis: Exploring the effects of potentization by electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and deep learning

The subject of ultrahigh dilutions has been under continuous debate over the years, mainly because the possibilities to analyze such diluted solutions are limited. In this context, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations were conducted to evaluate the morphological characteristics of ethanol- and water-based highly diluted solutions of gold; three levels of potentization (6C, 30C, and 200C) were examined for each type of solution. Moreover, Raman spectroscopy and deep learning (DL) algorithms were employed for the analysis of the three potentization levels of purified water, unpurified water, and purified water-based gold solutions. Three batches were assessed for each considered category, and the ability to discriminate between all investigated classes, between the potencies within each group or between the classes within the same level of potentization were presented and discussed in correlation with the TEM findings. Distinct forms of organization were revealed by TEM for the three levels of potentization, while the gated recurrent unit (GRU) model showed great accuracy (88 %) for discriminating all classes, over 90 % accuracy for distinguishing the samples within each group and over 95 % accuracy for classification within the same level of potentization if unpretreated Raman spectra were used. Thus, this suite of methods (TEM-EDX and Raman spectroscopy in combination with DL) can be successfully used for the characterization and differentiation of highly diluted solutions resulting after potentization treatment. Furthermore, considering the results obtained from the discrimination study involving all 11 classes and a data augmentation approach, the spectral segmentation method can be seen as a valuable strategy for increasing the model prediction accuracy.

Fabrication of Protective Organic Layer Using Schiff-Base Metal Complex Responsible for Excellent Corrosion Performance: Experimental and Theoretical Perspectives.

The effectiveness of a copper(II) complex with a Schiff base derived from 2-amino-4-phenyl-5-methylthiazole and salicylaldehyde (APMS) as a corrosion inhibitor for XC18 steel in an HCl solution was investigated. Experimental findings indicated a slight negative correlation between inhibition efficiencies in 1 M HCl and temperature but a positive correlation with both inhibitor concentration and immersion time, respectively. The weight loss measurement revealed that APMS achieved a maximum inhibition rate of 92.07% at 303 K. A fitting analysis demonstrated that APMS adheres to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The electrochemical results revealed an enhanced inhibitive performance of APMS, with the efficiency increasing as concentrations increased, ultimately reaching a peak of 94.47% at 5 × 10-3 mol L-1. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements revealed that APMS acted as a mixed-type inhibitor without affecting the corrosion mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy investigations of the metal surfaces corroborated the presence of an adsorbed organic layer. Advanced theoretical calculations utilizing density functional theory and first-principles density-functional tight-binding were conducted to gain insights into the behavior of APMS on the metal surface. APMS derives its advantages from crucial inter- and intramolecular interactions, resulting in the formation of a resilient adsorption layer, in line with the experimental findings. It is found that the presence of the APMS-based inhibitor exhibits a significant synergistic corrosion inhibition effect. The current study offers a design direction for enhancing the structural characteristics of Schiff base metal complexes, laying the groundwork for multifunctional frameworks to minimize corrosion rates with considerations for real-world use and cost-efficiency. The ability to replace harmful, expensive constituents with sustainable, and cost-effective organic alternatives represents a significant outcome of this study.

CoFe2O4 on Mica Substrate as Flexible Ethanol Gas Sensor in Self-Heating Mode.

In this study, a novel flexible ethanol gas sensor was created by the deposition of a CoFe2O4 (CFO) thin film on a thin mica substrate using the pulsed laser deposition technique. Transition electron microscopy (TEM) investigations clearly demonstrated the successful growth of CFO on the mica, where a well-defined interface was observed. Ethanol gas-sensing studies showed optimal performance at 200 °C, with the highest response of 19.2 to 100 ppm ethanol. Operating the sensor in self-heating mode under 7 V applied voltage, which corresponds to a temperature of approximately 200 °C, produced a maximal response of 19.2 to 100 ppm ethanol. This aligned with the highest responses observed during testing at 200 °C, confirming the sensor's accuracy and sensitivity to ethanol under self-heating conditions. In addition, the sensor exhibited good selectivity to ethanol and excellent flexibility, maintaining its high performance after bending and tilting up to 5000 times. As this is the first report on flexible self-heated CFO gas sensors, we believe that this research holds great promise for the future development of high-quality sensors based on this approach.

Eco-friendly green synthesis of AgNPs from Elaeocarpus serratus fruit extract: potential to antibacterial, antioxidant, cytotoxic effects of colon cancerous cells (HT-29) and its toxicity assessments of marine microcrustacean Artemia nauplii.

The present work demonstrated the green synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) utilizing Elaeocarpus serratus fruit extract. The study examined the effectiveness of phytocompounds in fruit extract in reducing Ag+ to Ag° ions. The water-soluble biobased substance production from silver ions to AgNPs in 45min at room temperature. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak was seen in the UV-visible absorption spectrum of the biologically altered response mixture. Examination with X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that AgNPs are strong and have a face-centered cubic shape. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigation proved the production of AgNPs in a cuboidal shape. The AgNPs demonstrated remarkable antibacterial activity and a potent capacity to neutralize DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radicals. The highest growth inhibition was found for E. serratus against S. dysenteriae (18.5 ± 1.0mm) and S. aureus (18 ± 1.2mm). These nanoparticles exhibited robust antiradical efficacy even at low concentrations. The AgNPs additionally exhibited cytotoxic effects on (HT-29) human colon adenocarcinoma cancer cells. The MTT assay (3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) indicated an inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 49.1 ± 2.33µg/mL for AgNPs, contrasting with the untreated cells of the negative control. The biotoxicity assessment using A. salina displayed mortality rates ranging from 8 to 69.33%, attributable to the E. serratus synthesized AgNPs. In our results concluded that simply first-hand information on that E. serattus fruit extract synthesized AgNPs were efficiently synthesized without the addition of any hazardous substances, and that they may be a strong antibacterial, antioxidant, and potential cytotoxic effects for the treatment of colon carcinoma cell lines.

Preparation and properties of montmorillonite incorporated natural rubber/ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber blends

This article aims to evaluate and compare two types of organic surface-modified-nanoclay of octadecylamine-modified-bentonite-nanoclay (ODA-BNC) and aminopropyltrimethoxysilane-octadecylamine-modified-nanomontmorillonite (APS-ODA-MMT). Each type of nanoclay is combined with silica as a bi-filler for natural rubber (NR)/ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) in a 50/50 blend ratio for possible vulcanized rubber nanocomposite application. The total filler content is 50 phr while nanoclay filler content ranges from 0 to 20 phr, keeping the other ingredients ratio fixed. The prepared composites are characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) and their mechanical and thermal properties are thoroughly investigated. The data reveal that the fillers added to the rubber can improve its surface properties according to their type and amount as confirmed by the Atomic force microscope (AFM), and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigation. The surface of rubber containing APS-ODA-MMT displayed higher height (251) and roughness surface (94.11), than those (69.8) and (45.62) respectively, containing ODA-BNC. Moreover, the acid resistance of the prepared composites is verified and indicated that increasing the nanoclay ratio (20%) enhances the acid resistance by reducing the surface distortion while keeping the surface morphology. The mechanical properties and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) measurements showed that the rubber containing ODA-BNC has higher values of stress (2.2), elongation (975), and thermal stability (470, 505, 520°C) than those (1.75), (650), and (440, 460, 470°C) respectively, containing the APS-ODA-MMT. Moreover, the durability investigation of the vulcanized rubber via the AFM found the modified composites can be used in harsh environments as a covering layer in petrochemical networks or chemical factories.

Bainite Formation in a Carbon-Free Fe–Cr–N System

In order to promote the understanding of bainitic transformation in nitrogen alloyed steels, the microstructure, transformation kinetics, and diffusion/precipitation characteristics of an isothermally heat-treated carbon-free system Fe–5Cr–N were investigated. Quenching dilatometry was used to perform heat treatments at temperatures between 400 °C and 500 °C and simultaneously receive information about the transformation kinetics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) investigations indicate a plate- to lenticular-like, fully ferritic microstructure with nanometer scale CrN. In order to analyze the diffusion and precipitation behavior of nitrogen, atom probe tomography measurements were performed. On the one hand, nitrogen segregation was found, and on the other hand, the presence of CrN precipitates and preliminary stages of CrN nitrides were validated.

Complementary metalloporphyrin-based nanostructure decorated with silver nanoparticles for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes

A hybrid composite photocatalyst, SA-T@Ag, was fabricated by the photoreduction of silver salts in the presence of nanomaterials composed of self-assembled complementary porphyrin triad SA-T. We confirmed the formation of SA-T@Ag from SA-T using various spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations revealed that a substantial amount of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were deposited on the surface of SA-T and that the microstructure of SA-T was intact during photoreduction. The formation of AgNPs on the surface of SA-T reduced the band gap energy (Eg) of SA-T@Ag compared to that of SA-T. This not only improves its light-harvesting properties but also delays the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which promotes more reactivity under visible light irradiation and improves the efficiency of polluted dye degradation. These photophysical properties are reflected in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light irradiation. The first-order degradation rate constant of MB dye within 45 min of visible light irradiation is much higher for SA-T@Ag (0.081 min−1) than SA-T (0.028 min−1). This report is of great importance in the field of environmental remediation and provides new opportunities for designing porphyrin-based photocatalytic systems as alternatives to conventional photocatalysts.

Genetic insights into Tietz albinism-deafness syndrome: A new dominant-negative mutation in MITF.

Tietz albinism-deafness syndrome (TADS) is a rare and severe manifestation of Waardenburg syndrome that is primarily linked to mutations in MITF. In this report, we present a case of TADS resulting from a novel c.637G>C mutation in MITF (p.Glu213Gln; GenBank Accession number: NM_000248). A 3-year-old girl presented with congenital generalized hypopigmentation of the hair, skin, and irides along with complete sensorineural hearing loss. Histopathological and electron microscopy investigations indicated that this variant did not alter the number of melanocytes in the skin but significantly impaired melanosome maturation within melanocytes. Comprehensive melanin analysis revealed marked reductions in both eumelanin (EM) and pheomelanin (PM) rather than changes in the EM-to-PM ratio observed in oculocutaneous albinism. We conducted an electrophoretic mobility shift assay to investigate the binding capability of the identified variant to DNA sequences containing the E-box motif along with other known variants (p.Arg217del and p.Glu213Asp). Remarkably, all three variants exhibited dominant-negative effects, thus providing novel insights into the pathogenesis of TADS. This study sheds light on the genetic mechanisms underlying TADS and offers a deeper understanding of this rare condition and its associated mutations in MITF.

Insights into water absorption characteristics of various waste-based inorganic additives and their application for soil stabilization

Cement is the most important binding agent used in soil stabilization and significantly improves the strength and compressibility of soils. However, owing to the significant environmental and socio-economic impact of cement production, alternative, low-carbon binders are increasingly being sought. Among them, waste-based inorganic additives used in construction provide sustainable soil treatment materials and reduce the need for landfills. Effective mud stabilization depends on the type of stabilizers and their mineralogical setup, as well as an understanding of their water absorption capacity. Therefore, this study investigated the factors influencing the water absorption characteristics of waste-based additives, including paper sludge ash (PSA), palm kernel shell ash (PKSA), rice husk ash (RHA), coal fly ash, hemihydrate gypsum, limestone powder, and basalt rock powder (BRP). The water absorption capacity (Wab) of each additive represents the amount of water absorbed per gram evaluated via the suction filtration method. The long-term water absorption capacities of the waste additives were compared with a conventional additive, blast furnace cement class B (BFCB). Although PSA, PKSA, and RHA absorbed more water than BFCB under short-term curing, BFCB exhibited the highest Wab under long-term curing. PSA, PKSA, and RHA had a water absorption capacity at 4 h (Wab)t = 4h of 74.5%, 107.3%, and 62.9%, respectively, whereas that of BFCB was 37.4%. In contrast, after 168 h, the water absorption capacity of BFCB increased to 126.1%. These evaluated water absorption capacities were categorized into immediate and time-dependent stages. Mercury intrusion porosimetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy investigations were conducted to investigate the influence of factors such as porosity and hydration of the different additives on water absorption capacity. The results showed that porosity characteristics affect the immediate water absorption capacity, and hydrate formation contributes to increased water absorption during curing. The waste additives PSA, PKSA, and RHA with irregular surfaces and pores were highly porous and exhibited a high immediate water absorption capacity (Wab)t = 4h, unlike the additives with flat surfaces and less irregularities with lower (Wab)t = 4h. The XRD investigation revealed that the presence of ettringite and calcite contributed to increased water absorption during curing for PSA, PKSA, and BFCB. The generation of needle-like ettringite could promote a denser microstructure in PSA, PKSA, and BFCB, thus further improving Wab during curing. Finally, using cone index strength, we explored the effective application of waste-based additives as soil stabilizers, attempting to predict the effect of water absorption capacity on the properties of treated soil. The stabilizer addition ratio (A) and Wab of the waste additives were found to be essential indicators for predicting the strength development of treated clays. A clear correlation was observed between the cone index (qc) and parameter β(t), which is derived from Wab and A, of the treated clays.

A transmission electron microscopy investigation suggests that telocytes, skeletal muscles, myoblasts, and stem cells in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) respond to salinity challenges

BackgroundTelocytes are modified interstitial cells that communicate with other types of cells, including stem cells. Stemness properties render them more susceptible to environmental conditions. The current morphological investigation examined the reactions of telocytes to salt stress in relation to stem cells and myoblasts. The common carp are subjected to salinity levels of 0.2, 6, and 10 ppt. The gill samples were preserved and prepared for TEM.ResultsThe present study observed that telocytes undergo morphological change and exhibit enhanced secretory activities in response to changes in salinity. TEM can identify typical telocytes. This research gives evidence for the communication of telocytes with stem cells, myoblasts, and skeletal muscles. Telocytes surround stem cells. Telopodes made planar contact with the cell membrane of the stem cell. Telocytes and their telopodes surrounded the skeletal myoblast. These findings show that telocytes may act as nurse cells for skeletal stem cells and myoblasts, which undergo fibrillogenesis. Not only telocytes undergo morphological alternations, but also skeletal muscles become hypertrophied, which receive telocyte secretory vesicles in intercellular compartments.ConclusionIn conclusion, the activation of telocytes is what causes stress adaptation. They might act as important players in intercellular communication between cells. It is also possible that reciprocal interaction occurs between telocytes and other cells to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Recycling of waste toner derived from exhausted printer cartridges as adsorbent for defluoridation of water

Due to the broad adoption of electronic and electrical equipment and the quick advancement of contemporary innovations in this domain, significant amounts of electronic waste have been produced. This category of waste includes the toner powder used by printers, copiers, and fax machines to print text and images. This paper describes a sustainable and environmentally friendly method of recycling waste toner powder. The chemical composition of this printer cartridge toner (PCt) powder is carbon, Fe3O4, polypropylene (polymeric resin), and SiO2 composite. Toner powder from exhausted printer cartridges was utilized as an adsorbent to remove fluoride from water. It has a fluoride adsorption capacity of 60 mg/g and a specific surface area of 20 m2/g. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopic investigations were used to investigate the chemical composition, structure, and surface morphology of the material. To analyze the collected experimental data, the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models were used. Time-dependent kinetic experiments were conducted to determine the mechanism of the adsorption process using pseudo-first-order kinetics, pseudo-second-order kinetics, and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The fluoride adsorption process was shown to be feasible and spontaneous (ΔG < 0) based on calculated thermodynamic characteristics, which included enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, entropy (ΔS > 0), and adsorption activation energy. The study also discussed its reusability as an adsorbent and examined its functioning capability in actual water.

Nanostructured Coatings Based on Graphene Oxide for the Management of Periprosthetic Infections.

To modulate the bioactivity and boost the therapeutic outcome of implantable metallic devices, biodegradable coatings based on polylactide (PLA) and graphene oxide nanosheets (nGOs) loaded with Zinforo™ (Zin) have been proposed in this study as innovative alternatives for the local management of biofilm-associated periprosthetic infections. Using a modified Hummers protocol, high-purity and ultra-thin nGOs have been obtained, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations. The matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) technique has been successfully employed to obtain the PLA-nGO-Zin coatings. The stoichiometric and uniform transfer was revealed by infrared microscopy (IRM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. In vitro evaluation, performed on fresh blood samples, has shown the excellent hemocompatibility of PLA-nGO-Zin-coated samples (with a hemolytic index of 1.15%), together with their anti-inflammatory ability. Moreover, the PLA-nGO-Zin coatings significantly inhibited the development of mature bacterial biofilms, inducing important anti-biofilm efficiency in the as-coated samples. The herein-reported results evidence the promising potential of PLA-nGO-Zin coatings to be used for the biocompatible and antimicrobial surface modification of metallic implants.

A scanning electron microscopy investigation of the precision of three orthodontic bracket slot systems

ObjectiveOne of the most imprortant factors in achieving ideal teeth positions is the precision of the slot dimensions of orthodontic brackets into the archwires are inserted.This study aimed to assess the accuracy of the dimensions of orthodontic bracket slots and molar buccal tube apertures and to compare them with the specifications provided by the manufacturers.MethodA total of sixty brackets and ten molar buccal tubes with varying slot heights were examined using a scanning electron microscope from the mesial side. The dimensions and morphology of these bracket slots and buccal tubes apertures were assessed using the AutoCAD Software. A one-sample t-test was conducted to compare the measurements with the values provided by the manufacturer.ResultsThe findings of the present study indicated that the height of the measured bracket slots and buccal tube apertures dimensions were significantly larger than the actual dimensions and exhibiting divergent walls. High-Resolution Characterization of Enamel Remineralization Using Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Electron Microscopy

Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to assess the suitability of high-resolution time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) for visualizing cross-sectional changes in human enamel microstructure and chemical composition during treatment and remineralization cycling of artificially generated caries lesions underneath an artificial plaque. Methods: Treatments consisted of exposure to twice daily toothpaste/water slurries prepared from 0, 1,100, and 5,000 μg/g fluoride (F) NaF/silica toothpastes. In addition, treatments with slurries prepared from 1,100 μg/g F SnF2/silica toothpastes were done using 44Ca in the remineralization solution to allow for differentiation of newly formed mineral and exploration of incorporated metal dopants using ToF-SIMS. Complementary microhardness, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) investigations were performed on enamel cross sections. Results: HR-TEM was used for the first time to determine the change in crystallinity during remineralization revealing distinct microstructural zones within one lesion. Chemical mapping using ToF-SIMS demonstrated that the distribution of F, while observed primarily in the new mineral phase, was widespread throughout the lesion with 44Ca substantially limited to the remineralizing mineral. Both penetrated the inter-rod spaces of the sound enamel illustrating how acid damage propagates into the native mineral as the caries lesion deepens. HR-TEM examination revealed different regions within the lesion characterized by distinct micro- and ultrastructures. Importantly, HR-TEM revealed a return of crystallinity following remineralization. F dose-response observations verified the ability of these high-resolution techniques to differentiate remineralization efficacy. Conclusion: The collective results provided new insights such as the visualization of F or calcium penetration pathways, as well as new tools to study the caries process.

Thermally exfoliated graphene oxide doped microporous bio-nanocomposite hydrogel: A promising substrate for biomedical application

Hydrogels have demonstrated significant promise as flexible/wearable sensors for the diagnosis, monitoring, and delivery of personalized medicine for health issues and deficiencies. To this end, a novel approach was employed towards the development of a hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite-based biosensing substrate. The hierarchical hydrogel matrix derived by using polyaniline (PANI)/polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA) biopolymer-matrix, was reinforced with in-house synthesized thermally exfoliated graphene-oxide (TEGO). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) confirmed the interfacial-interactions between hydroxyl groups and functional groups of TEGO, a conducive property for immobilization and catalytic activities. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigation of the developed nanocomposite hydrogel demonstrated that the addition of nanofiller facilitated the ordered structure of nanocomposite hydrogel. Further, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) investigations revealed interconnected porous microstructure of the nanocomposites, assisted by nucleating effect of TEGO, a supporting micro-environment for the transportation of biomolecules. Impedance analysis and hall effect studies showed that the nanocomposite hydrogel substrate was highly conductive. In vitro cytocompatibility results demonstrated excellent biocompatibility of the bio-nanocomposite hydrogels. Cyclic-voltammetry analysis indicated a reduction in current on the surface due to long-range shattered conjugated network of TEGO and PANI in presence of functional groups. Overall, this study indicates that developed bio-nanocomposite hydrogel substrates are promising candidates for biomedical applications.

Fractal and Multifractal Characteristics on Pore Structure of Coal-Based Sedimentary Rocks Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Summary Unconventional reservoirs have nanoscale pores, complex pore structures, and heterogeneity that directly affect reservoir storage performance and fluid transport capacity. In this study, shale, mudstone, and sandstone, three typical coal sedimentary rocks from the Daqiang coal mine in the Tifa Basin, were selected for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation, with the aim to investigate the pore structure and multifractal characteristics of the coal sedimentary reservoirs and to qualitatively analyze the effects of the physical property parameters and the mineralogical compositions on the multifractal parameters. The distribution data of the NMR T2 spectra were analyzed. The results showed that (1) SEM analysis concluded that the pore system of the three different lithological samples (mudstone, shale, and sandstone) was dominated by mineral matrix pores (i.e., intergranular and intragranular pores) and in the sandstone samples, there were only a few biological pores found. (2) The distribution of the NMR T2 spectrum peaks indicates that the sandstone and shale T2 spectra are bimodal, dominated by micropores, and contain a small number of transitional pores; most of the T2 spectra of mudstone are single peaks in distribution, mainly dominated by micropores. (3) Multifractal parameters are positively correlated with porosity and significantly negatively correlated with permeability; multifractal parameters are significantly positively correlated with the content of clay minerals and kaolinite, which suggests that the increase in clay minerals and kaolinite content enhances the heterogeneity of the pore space. The negative correlation with the content of quartz suggests that the enrichment of quartz reduces the irregularity of the pore space.

Evaluating the influence of coal particle size gradation on the properties of coal–water slurry

This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the influence of coal particle size gradation on the properties of coal–water slurry (CWS), including coal concentration, flowability, stability, and rheological behavior. The research findings indicate that coarse coal particles have a dominant effect on improving the coal concentration of CWS, while fine coal particles significantly contribute to enhancing the flowability and stability of CWS. Also, a gradation approach incorporating both coarse and fine components with continuous particle size distributions was explored, successfully achieving a high performance CWS with a high coal concentration of 66.12 wt%, a flow time of 13.37 s indicating excellent flowability, and a water separation rate of 3.49 wt% after standing for 7 days, demonstrating good stability. Furthermore, the validity of these research results was confirmed by zeta potential analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations.
