Survival of gas in subhalos and its impact on the 21 cm forest signals: insights from hydrodynamic simulations

Understanding the survival of gas within subhalos under various astrophysical processes is crucial for elucidating cosmic structure formation and evolution. We study the resilience of gas in subhalos, focusing on the impact of tidal and ram pressure stripping through hydrodynamic simulations. Our results uncover significant gas stripping primarily driven by ram pressure effects, which also profoundly influence the gas distribution within these subhalos. Notably, despite their vulnerability to ram pressure effects, the low-mass subhalos can play a pivotal role in influencing the observable characteristics of cosmic structures due to their large abundance. Specifically, we explore the application of our findings to the 21 cm forest, showing how the survival dynamics of gas in subhalos can modulate the 21 cm optical depth, a key probe for detecting minihalos in the pre-reionization era. Our previous study demonstrated that the 21 cm optical depth can be enhanced by the subhalos, but the effects of tidal and ram pressure stripping on the subhalo abundance have not been fully considered. In this work, we further investigate the contribution of subhalos to the 21 cm optical depth with hydrodynamic simulations, particularly highlighting the trajectories and fates of subhalos within mass ranges of 104-6 M ⊙ h -1 in a host halo of 107 M ⊙h-1, and subhalos within mass range of 104-5 M ⊙h-1 in a host halo of 106 M ⊙h-1. Despite their susceptibility to ram pressure stripping, the contribution of abundant low-mass subhalos to the 21 cm optical depth is more significant than that of their massive counterparts primarily due to their greater abundance. We find that the 21 cm optical depth can be increased by a factor of approximately two due to the abundant low-mass subhalos. However, this enhancement is about twice as low as previously estimated in our earlier study, a discrepancy attributed to the effects of ram pressure stripping. Our work provides critical insights into the gas dynamics within subhalos in the early universe, highlighting their resilience against environmental stripping effects, and their impact on observable 21 cm signals.

X-Ray Constraints on the Hot Gaseous Corona of Edge-on Late-type Galaxies in Virgo

We present a systematic study of the putative hot gas corona around late-type galaxies (LTGs) residing in the Virgo cluster, based on archival Chandra observations. Our sample consists of 21 nearly edge-on galaxies representing a range of star formation rate (SFR) of 0.2–3 M ⊙ yr−1 and a range of stellar mass (M *) of (0.2–10) × 1010 M ⊙, the majority of which have not been explored with high-sensitivity X-ray observations so far. Significant extraplanar diffuse X-ray (0.5–2 keV) emission is detected in only three LTGs, which are also the three galaxies with the highest SFR. A stacking analysis is performed for the remaining galaxies without individual detection, dividing the whole sample into two subsets based on SFR, stellar mass, or specific SFR. Only the high-SFR bin yields a significant detection, which has a value of L X ∼ 3 × 1038 erg s−1 per galaxy. The stacked extraplanar X-ray signals of the Virgo LTGs are consistent with the empirical L X–SFR and L X–M * relations found among highly inclined disk galaxies in the field, but appear to be systematically lower than those of a comparison sample of simulated star-forming galaxies in clusters identified from the Illustris-TNG100 simulation. The apparent paucity of hot gas coronae in the sampled Virgo LTGs might be understood as the net outcome of the long-lasting effect of ram pressure stripping exerted by the hot intracluster medium and in-disk star-forming activity acting on shorter timescales. A better understanding of the roles of environmental effects in regulating the hot gas content of cluster galaxies invites sensitive X-ray observations for a large sample of galaxies.

The impact of environmental effects on active galactic nuclei: A decline in the incidence of ionized outflows

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have generally been considered to be less frequent in denser environments due to a lower number of galaxy-galaxy interactions and/or the removal of their gas-rich reservoirs by the dense intergalactic medium. However, recent observational and theoretical works suggest that the effect of ram-pressure stripping acting on galaxies in dense environments might reduce the angular momentum of their gas, causing it to infall towards the super massive black hole at their centre, activating the AGN phase. In this work we explore the connection between environment and nuclear activity by evaluating the variation in the incidence of ionized outflows, a common phenomenon associated with nuclear activity, in AGNs across different environments. We select a sample of approximately 3300 optical AGNs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 13, which we match with a group catalogue to identify galaxies in isolation or residing in groups. We further probe their environments through the projected distance to the central galaxy of the group or cluster and the projected surface density to the fifth neighbour (δ5). The presence of ionized outflows is determined through the modelling of the [O III] λ5007 emission line. We find that at lower masses (< 1010.3 M⊙), the fraction of ionized outflows is significantly lower in satellite AGNs (∼7%) than in isolated (∼22%) AGNs, probably due to their different AGN luminosity, L[O III], in this stellar mass range. The fraction of outflows decreases at distances closer to the central galaxy of the group or cluster for all satellite AGNs; however, only the lower-mass ones (109 − 1010.3 M⊙) display a significant decline with δ5. Although this study does not include AGNs in the densest regions of galaxy clusters, our findings suggest that AGNs in dense environments accrete less gas than those in the field, potentially due to the removal of the gas reservoirs via stripping or starvation, leading to a negative connection between environment and AGN activity. Based on our results, we propose that the observed change in the incidence of outflows when moving towards denser regions of groups and clusters could contribute to the higher gas metallicities of cluster galaxies compared to field galaxies, especially at lower masses.

Ram pressure in astronomy and engineering

The ram pressure of a moving fluid, P r , is the rise in pressure at a stagnation point relative to the upstream pressure. In astronomy, it is used to calculate the interaction of stellar winds with planets and to quantify the effects of ram pressure stripping. On aeroplanes and in wind tunnels, it is measured with a pitot-static tube, an inexpensive device with no moving parts that was invented in 1732. Up through the mid-1960s, across both astronomy and engineering the ram pressure of a moving gas and its momentum flux, ρ u 2 , where ρ and u are the upstream mass density and flow speed, were properly treated as related but distinct quantities. This relationship may be expressed as P r = Sp ρ u 2 , where Sp is the dimensionless Spreiter number, which ranges between 0.5 and 0.88 for a monatomic gas, depending on the upstream Mach number, Ma . Unfortunately, by the early 1970s, in astronomy ram pressure was defined to be the momentum flux and Sp was fixed to be unity and forgotten as a parameter. This article seeks to raise awareness of this issue, and to review the determination of Sp for subsonic and supersonic flow.

An estimate of the mass of the Milky Way from the Magellanic Stream

ABSTRACT We present a model for the formation of the Magellanic Stream (MS) due to ram pressure stripping. We model the history of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds in the recent cosmological past in a static Milky Way (MW) potential with diffuse halo gas, using observationally motivated orbits for the Magellanic Clouds derived from HST proper motions within the potential of the MW. This model is able to reproduce the trailing arm but does not reproduce the leading arm feature, which is common for models of the stream formation that include ram pressure stripping effects. While our model does not outperform other models in terms of matching the observable quantities in the MS, it is close enough for our ultimate goal – using the MS to estimate the MW mass. By analysing our grid of models, we find that there is a direct correlation between the observed stream length in our simulations and the mass of the MW. For the observed MS length, the inferred MW mass is 1.5 ± 0.32 × 1012$\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$, which agrees closely with other independent measures of the MW mass. We also discuss the MS in the context of H i streams in galaxy clusters, and find that the MS lies on the low-mass end of a continuum from Hickson groups to the Virgo cluster. As a tracer of the dynamical mass in the outer halo, the MS is a particularly valuable probe of the MW’s potential.

Enhanced Star Formation Activity of Extreme Jellyfish Galaxies in Massive Clusters and the Role of Ram Pressure Stripping

Jellyfish galaxies are an excellent tool to investigate the short-term effects of ram pressure stripping (RPS) on star formation in cluster environments. It has been thought that the star formation activity of jellyfish galaxies may depend on the host-cluster properties, but previous studies have not yet found a clear correlation. In this study, we estimate the Hα-based star formation rates (SFRs) of five jellyfish galaxies in massive clusters (σ v,cl ≳ 1000 km s−1) at z ∼ 0.3−0.4 using Gemini GMOS/IFU observations to explore the relationship. Combining our results with those in the literature, we find that the star formation activity of jellyfish galaxies shows a positive correlation with their host-cluster velocity dispersion as a proxy of cluster mass and dynamical states. We divide the jellyfish galaxy sample into two groups with strong and weak RPS signatures using a morphological class. In the phase-space diagram, the jellyfish galaxies with strong RPS features show a higher SFR and a stronger central concentration than those with weak RPS features. We estimate their SFR excess relative to the star formation main sequence (starburstiness; R SB = SFR/SFRMS(z)) and the density of the surrounding intracluster medium (ICM) using scaling relations with the cluster velocity dispersion. As a result, the starburstiness of jellyfish galaxies with strong RPS signatures clearly exhibits positive correlations with cluster velocity dispersion, ICM density, and strength of ram pressure. This shows that the relation between RPS and star formation activity of jellyfish galaxies depends on the host-cluster properties and strength of the ram pressure.

The structure and characteristic scales of the H I gas in galactic disks

The spatial distribution of the H I gas in galactic disks holds important clues about the physical processes that shape the structure and dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM). The structure of the ISM could be affected by a variety of perturbations internal and external to the galaxy, and the unique signature of each of these perturbations could be visible in the structure of interstellar gas. In this work, we quantify the structure of the H I gas in a sample of 33 nearby galaxies taken from the HI Nearby Galaxy Survey (THINGS) using the delta-variance (Δ-variance) spectrum. The THINGS galaxies display a large diversity in their spectra, but there are a number of recurrent features. In many galaxies, we observe a bump in the spectrum on scales of a few to several hundred parsec. We find the characteristic scales associated with the bump to be correlated with the galactic star formation rate (SFR) for values of the SFR ≳0.5 M⊙ yr−1 and also with the median size of the H I shells detected in these galaxies. We interpret this characteristic scale as being associated with the effects of feedback from supernova explosions. On larger scales, we observe in most galaxies two self-similar, scale-free regimes. The first regime, on intermediate scales (≲0.5R25), is shallow, and the power law that describes this regime has an exponent in the range [0.1–1] with a mean value of 0.55 that is compatible with the density field that is generated by supersonic turbulence in the cold phase of the H I gas. The second power law is steeper, with a range of exponents between 0.5 and 2.3 and a mean value of ≈1.5. These values are associated with subsonic to transonic turbulence, which is characteristic of the warm phase of the H I gas. The spatial scale at which the transition between the two self-similar regimes occurs is found to be ≈0.5R25, which is very similar to the size of the molecular disk in the THINGS galaxies. Overall, our results suggest that on scales ≲0.5R25, the structure of the ISM is affected by the effects of supernova explosions. On larger scales (≳0.5R25), stellar feedback has no significant impact, and the structure of the ISM is determined by large-scale processes that govern the dynamics of the gas in the warm neutral medium, such as the flaring of the H I disk at large galactocentric radii and the effects of ram pressure stripping.

LoTSS jellyfish galaxies

Ram pressure stripping is a frequently cited mechanism for quenching galaxy star formation in dense environments. Numerous examples of ram pressure stripping in galaxy clusters are present in literature; however, substantially less work has been focused on ram pressure stripping in lower-mass groups, the most common galaxy environment in the local Universe. In this work we use the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) to search for jellyfish galaxies (i.e., galaxies with ram pressure stripped tails extending beyond the optical disk) in ∼500 SDSS groups (z < 0.05), making this the most comprehensive search for ram pressure stripping in groups to date. We identify 60 jellyfish galaxies in groups with extended, asymmetric radio continuum tails, which are found across the entire range of group mass from 1012.5 < Mgroup < 1014 h−1 M⊙. We compare the group jellyfish galaxies identified in this work with the LoTSS jellyfish galaxies in clusters presented in a recent work, allowing us to compare the effects of ram pressure stripping across three decades in group and cluster mass. We find that jellyfish galaxies are most commonly found in clusters, with the frequency decreasing towards the lowest-mass groups. Both the orientation of observed radio continuum tails and the positions of group jellyfish galaxies in phase space suggest that galaxies are stripped more slowly in groups relative to clusters. Finally, we find that the star formation rates of jellyfish galaxies in groups are consistent with ‘normal’ star-forming group galaxies, which is in contrast to cluster jellyfish galaxies that have clearly enhanced star formation rates. On the whole, there is clear evidence for ongoing ram pressure stripping in galaxy groups (down to very low group masses), though the frequency of jellyfish galaxies and the strength of ram pressure stripping appear lower in groups than in clusters. Differences in the efficiency of ram pressure stripping in groups versus clusters likely contribute to the positive trend between the quenched fraction and host halo mass observed in the local Universe.

The effect of ram-pressure stripping on dwarf galaxies

ABSTRACT Ram-pressure stripping (RPS) is a well observed phenomenon of massive spiral galaxies passing through the hot intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters. For dwarf galaxies (DGs) within a cluster, the transformation from gaseous to gas-poor systems by RPS is not easily observed and must happen in the outskirts of clusters. In a few objects in close by galaxy clusters and the field, RPS has been observed. Since cluster early-type DGs also show a large variety of internal structures (unexpected central gas reservoirs, blue stellar cores, composite radial stellar profiles), we aim in this study to investigate how ram pressure (RP) affects the interstellar gas content and therefore the star formation (SF) activity. Using a series of numerical simulations, we quantify the dependence of the stripped-off gas on the velocity of the infalling DGs and on the ambient ICM density. We demonstrated that SF can be either suppressed or triggered by RP depending on the ICM density and the DGs mass. Under some conditions, RP can compress the gas, so that it is unexpectedly retained in the central DG region and forms stars. When gas clouds are still bound against stripping but lifted from a thin disc and fall back, their new stars form an ellipsoidal (young) stellar population already with a larger velocity dispersion without the necessity of harassment. Most spectacularly, star clusters can form downstream in stripped-off massive gas clouds in the case of strong RP. We compare our results to observations.

GASP. XXII. The Molecular Gas Content of the JW100 Jellyfish Galaxy at z ∼ 0.05: Does Ram Pressure Promote Molecular Gas Formation?

Abstract Within the GASP survey, aimed at studying the effect of ram pressure stripping on star formation quenching in cluster galaxies, we analyze here ALMA observations of the jellyfish galaxy JW100. We find an unexpected large amount of molecular gas (∼2.5 × 1010 ), 30% of which is located in the stripped gas tail out to ∼35 kpc from the galaxy center. The overall kinematics of the molecular gas is similar to the one shown by the ionized gas, but for clear signatures of double components along the stripping direction detected only out to 2 kpc from the disk. The line ratio r 21 has a clumpy distribution and in the tail can reach large values (≥1), while its average value is low (0.58 with a 0.15 dispersion). All these evidence strongly suggest that the molecular gas in the tail is newly born from stripped H i gas or newly condensed from stripped diffuse molecular gas. The analysis of interferometric data at different scales reveals that a significant fraction (∼40%) of the molecular gas is extended over large scales (≥8 kpc) in the disk, and this fraction becomes predominant in the tail (∼70%). By comparing the molecular gas surface density with the star formation rate surface density derived from the Hα emission from MUSE data, we find that the depletion time on 1 kpc scale is particularly large (5–10 Gyr) both within the ram-pressure-disturbed region in the stellar disk and in the complexes along the tail.

Cluster induced quenching of galaxies in the massive cluster XMMXCS J2215.9−1738 at z ∼ 1.5 traced by enhanced metallicities inside half R200

Aims. Cluster environments at z < 0.5 were found to increase the gas metallicities of galaxies which enter inner regions of the clusters where the density of the intracluster medium is high enough to remove their hot halo gas by ram-pressure stripping effects and to stop the inflow of pristine gas. To extend these studies to z > 1, the most massive clusters known at these redshifts are the sites where these environmental effects should be more pronounced and more easily observed with present day telescopes. Methods. We explore the massive cluster XMMXCS J2215.9−1738 at z ∼ 1.5 with KMOS spectroscopy of Hα and [N II] λ 6584 covering a region that corresponds to about one virial radius. Using published spectroscopic redshifts of 108 galaxies in and around the cluster we computed the location of galaxies in the projected velocity-versus-position phase-space to separate our cluster sample into a virialized region of objects accreted longer ago (roughly inside half R200) and a region of infalling galaxies. We measured oxygen abundances for ten cluster galaxies with detected [N II] λ 6584 lines in the individual galaxy spectra and compared the mass–metallicity relation of the galaxies inside half R200 with the infalling galaxies and a field sample at similar redshifts. Results. We find that the oxygen abundances of individual z ∼ 1.5 star-forming cluster galaxies inside half R200 are comparable, at the respective stellar mass, to the higher local SDSS metallicity values. We compare our measurements with a field galaxy sample from the KMOS3D survey at similar redshifts. We find that the [N II] λ 6584/Hα line ratios inside half R200 are higher by 0.2 dex and that the resultant metallicities of the galaxies in the inner part of the cluster are higher by about 0.1 dex, at a given mass, than the metallicities of infalling galaxies and of field galaxies at z ∼ 1.5. The enhanced metallicities of cluster galaxies at z ∼ 1.5 inside 0.5R200 indicate that the density of the intracluster medium in this massive cluster becomes high enough toward the cluster center such that the ram pressure exceeds the restoring pressure of the hot gas reservoir of cluster galaxies. This can remove the gas reservoir and initiate quenching; although the galaxies continue to form stars, albeit at slightly lower rates, using the available cold gas in the disk which is not stripped.

OMEGA–OSIRIS mapping of emission-line galaxies in A901/2–V. The rich population of jellyfish galaxies in the multicluster system Abell 901/2

We present the results of a systematic search and characterisation of jellyfish galaxy candidates in the multi-cluster system A901/2, at z ~ 0.165, as part of the OMEGA survey. By visual inspecting ACS/HST F606W images looking for morphological signatures of ram-pressure stripping events in Halpha-emitting galaxies, we identify a total of 70 candidates. Out of these, 53 are clearly star-forming galaxies and 5 are highly probable AGN hosts, the classification of the remaining galaxies is more uncertain. They have late-type and irregular morphologies and most of them are part of the blue cloud with only 4 being previously classified as dusty reds. The AGN activity is not prominent in the sample and, of the few cases of galaxies hosting AGN, such activity does not seem to be correlated to the gas stripping phenomenon. Our jellyfish galaxy candidates do not have a preferential pattern of motion within the multi-cluster system, although the most compelling cases appear to inhabit the inner regions of the most massive sub-cluster centres. The sSFR of these galaxies indicates that their star formation activity is enhanced, in contrast with what is observed for the rest of the star-forming galaxy population in the system. Half of the sample is forming stars at a higher rate than the main-sequence for field galaxies and this behaviour is more evident for the most compelling candidates. For some galaxies, the spatially resolved Halpha emission appears to be as disturbed and extended as their continuum counterparts. Our findings point towards a scenario where the ram pressure stripping is triggering a period of intense and extended star formation throughout the galaxy while it is also disturbing the morphology. This is the largest sample of jellyfish galaxy candidates found in a single system suggesting that cluster mergers might be the ideal environment for studying ram pressure stripping effects.

Quenching of satellite galaxies at the outskirts of galaxy clusters

We find, using cosmological simulations of galaxy clusters, that the hot X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium (ICM) enclosed within the outer accretion shock extends out to $R_{\rm shock}\sim(2 - 3) R_{\rm vir}$, where $R_{\rm vir}$ is the standard virial radius of the halo. Using a simple analytic model for satellite galaxies in the cluster, we evaluate the effect of ram pressure stripping on the gas in the inner discs and in the haloes at different distances from the cluster centre. We find that significant removal of star-forming disc gas occurs only at $r \lesssim 0.5 R_{\rm vir}$, while gas removal from the satellite halo is more effective and can occur when the satellite is found between $ R_{\rm vir}$ and $R_{\rm shock}$. Removal of halo gas sets the stage for quenching of the star formation by starvation over $2\textrm{--}3\,\mathrm{Gyr}$, prior to the satellite entry to the inner cluster halo. This scenario explains the presence of quenched galaxies, preferentially discs, at the outskirts of galaxy clusters, and the delayed quenching of satellites compared to central galaxies.

Stellar density distribution along the minor axis of the Large Magellanic Cloud

We studied the spatial distribution of young and old stellar populations along the western half part of the minor axis of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using Washington MT1 photometry of selected fields, which span a deprojected distance range from the LMC bar centre out to ~ 31.6 kpc. We found that both stellar populations share a mean LMC limiting radius of 8.9+-0.4 kpc; old populations are three times more dense that young populations at that LMC limit. When comparing this result with recent values for the LMC extension due to north, the old populations resulted significantly more elongated than the young ones. Bearing in mind previous claims that the elongation of the outermost LMC regions may be due to the tidal effects of the Milky Way (MW), our findings suggest that such a tidal interaction should not have taken place recently. The existence of young populations in the outermost western regions also supports previous results about ram pressure stripping effects of the LMC gaseous disc due to the motion of the LMC in the MW halo.

The Effects of Ram-pressure Stripping and Supernova Winds on the Tidal Stirring of Disky Dwarfs: Enhanced Transformation into Dwarf Spheroidals

Abstract A conclusive model for the formation of dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies still remains elusive. Owing to their proximity to the massive spirals Milky Way (MW) and M31, various environmental processes have been invoked to explain their origin. In this context, the tidal stirring model postulates that interactions with MW-sized hosts can transform rotationally supported dwarfs, resembling present-day dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies, into systems with the kinematic and structural properties of dSphs. Using N-body+SPH simulations, we investigate the dependence of this transformation mechanism on the gas fraction, f gas, in the disk of the progenitor dwarf. Our numerical experiments incorporate for the first time the combined effects of radiative cooling, ram-pressure stripping, star formation, supernova (SN) winds, and a cosmic UV background. For a given orbit inside the primary galaxy, rotationally supported dwarfs with gas fractions akin to those of observed dIrrs (f gas ≳ 0.5), demonstrate a substantially enhanced likelihood and efficiency of transformation into dSphs relative to their collisionless (f gas = 0) counterparts. We argue that the combination of ram-pressure stripping and SN winds causes the gas-rich dwarfs to respond more impulsively to tides, augmenting their transformation. When f gas ≳ 0.5, disky dwarfs on previously unfavorable low-eccentricity or large-pericenter orbits are still able to transform. On the widest orbits, the transformation is incomplete; the dwarfs retain significant rotational support, a relatively flat shape, and some gas, naturally resembling transition-type systems. We conclude that tidal stirring constitutes a prevalent evolutionary mechanism for shaping the structure of dwarf galaxies within the currently favored CDM cosmological paradigm.

HST IMAGING OF DUST STRUCTURES AND STARS IN THE RAM PRESSURE STRIPPED VIRGO SPIRALS NGC 4402 AND NGC 4522: STRIPPED FROM THE OUTSIDE IN WITH DENSE CLOUD DECOUPLING

ABSTRACT We describe and constrain the origins of interstellar medium (ISM) structures likely created by ongoing intracluster medium (ICM) ram pressure stripping in two Virgo Cluster spirals, NGC 4522 and NGC 4402, using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) BVI images of dust extinction and stars, as well as supplementary H i, Hα, and radio continuum images. With a spatial resolution of ∼10 pc in the HST images, this is the highest-resolution study to date of the physical processes that occur during an ICM–ISM ram pressure stripping interaction, ram pressure stripping's effects on the multi-phase, multi-density ISM, and the formation and evolution of ram-pressure-stripped tails. In dust extinction, we view the leading side of NGC 4402 and the trailing side of NGC 4522, and so we see distinct types of features in both. In both galaxies, we identify some regions where dense clouds are decoupling or have decoupled and others where it appears that kiloparsec-sized sections of the ISM are moving coherently. NGC 4522 has experienced stronger, more recent pressure and has the “jellyfish” morphology characteristic of some ram-pressure-stripped galaxies. Its stripped tail extends up from the disk plane in continuous upturns of dust and stars curving up to ∼2 kpc above the disk plane. On the other side of the galaxy, there is a kinematically and morphologically distinct extraplanar arm of young, blue stars and ISM above a mostly stripped portion of the disk, and between it and the disk plane are decoupled dust clouds that have not been completely stripped. The leading side of NGC 4402 contains two kiloparsec-scale linear dust filaments with complex substructure that have partially decoupled from the surrounding ISM. NGC 4402 also contains long dust ridges, suggesting that large parts of the ISM are being pushed out at once. Both galaxies contain long ridges of polarized radio continuum emission indicating the presence of large-scale, ordered magnetic fields. We propose that magnetic fields could bind together gas of different densities, causing nearby gas of different densities to be stripped at the same rate and creating the large, coherent dust ridges and upturns. A number of factors likely play roles in determining what types of structures form as a result of ram pressure, including ram pressure strength and history, the location within the galaxy relative to the leading side, and pre-existing substructure in the ISM that may be bound together by magnetic fields during stripping.

BUDHIES – III: the fate of H i and the quenching of galaxies in evolving environments

In a hierarchical Universe clusters grow via the accretion of galaxies from the field, groups and even other clusters. As this happens, galaxies can lose their gas reservoirs via different mechanisms, eventually quenching their star-formation. We explore the diverse environmental histories of galaxies through a multi-wavelength study of the combined effect of ram-pressure stripping and group "processing" in Abell 963, a massive growing cluster at $z=0.2$ from the Blind Ultra Deep HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES). We incorporate hundreds of new optical redshifts (giving a total of 566 cluster members), as well as Subaru and XMM-Newton data from LoCuSS, to identify substructures and evaluate galaxy morphology, star-formation activity, and HI content (via HI deficiencies and stacking) out to $3\times R_{200}$. We find that Abell 963 is being fed by at least 7 groups, that contribute to the large number of passive galaxies outside the cluster core. More massive groups have a higher fraction of passive and HI-poor galaxies, while low-mass groups host younger (often interacting) galaxies. For cluster galaxies not associated with groups we corroborate our previous finding that HI gas (if any) is significantly stripped via ram-pressure during their first passage through the intra-cluster medium, and find mild evidence for a starburst associated with this event. In addition, we find an overabundance of morphologically peculiar and/or star-forming galaxies near the cluster core. We speculate that these arise as groups pass through the cluster (post-processing). Our study highlights the importance of environmental quenching and the complexity added by evolving environments.

The collaborative effect of ram pressure and merging on star formation and stripping fraction

Aims: We investigate the effect of ram pressure stripping (RPS) on simulations of merging pairs of gas-rich spiral galaxies. Our goal is to provide an estimate of the combined effect of merging and RPS on stripping efficiency and star formation rate. Methods: We make use of the combined N-body/hydrodynamic code GADGET-2. In our simulations, we vary mass ratios between 1:4 and 1:8 in a binary merger. We sample different geometric configurations of the merging systems (edge-on and face-on mergers, different impact parameters). Furthermore, we vary the properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) in rough steps: The speed of the merging system relative to the ICM between 500 and 1000 km/s, the ICM density between $10^{-29}$ and $10^{-27}$ g/cm$^3$, and the ICM direction relative to the mergers' orbital plane. Ram pressure is kept constant within a simulation time period, as is the ICM temperature of $10^7$ K. Each simulation in the ICM is compared to simulations of the merger in vacuum and the non-merging galaxies with acting ram pressure. Results: Averaged over the simulation time (1 Gyr) the merging pairs show a negligible 5% enhancement in SFR, when compared to single galaxies under the same environmental conditions. The SFRs peak at the time of the galaxies first fly-through. There, our simulations show SFRs of up to 20 M$_{\odot}$/yr (compared to 3 M$_{\odot}$/yr of the non-merging galaxies in vacuum). In the most extreme case, this constitutes a short-term ($<50$ Myr) SFR increase of 50% over the non-merging galaxies experiencing ram pressure. The wake of merging galaxies in the ICM typically has a third to half the star mass seen in the non-merging galaxies and 5% to 10 % less gas mass. The joint effect of RPS and merging, according to our simulations, is not significantly different from pure ram pressure effects.

The environmental dependence of neutral hydrogen in the gimic simulations

We use the Galaxies-Intergalactic Medium Interaction Calculation (GIMIC) cosmological hydrodynamic simulation at z=0 to study the distribution and environmental dependence of neutral hydrogen (HI) gas in the outskirts of simulated galaxies. This gas can currently be probed directly in, for example, Ly$\alpha$ absorption via the observation of background quasars. Radio facilities, such as the Square Kilometre Array, will provide a complementary probe of the diffuse HI in emission and will constrain the physics underpinning the complex interplay between accretion and feedback mechanisms which affect the intergalactic medium. We extract a sample of 488 galaxies from a re-simulation of the average cosmic density GIMIC region. We estimate the neutral hydrogen content of these galaxies and the surrounding intergalactic medium within which they reside. We investigate the average HI radial profiles by stacking the individual profiles according to both mass and environment. We find high HI column densities at large impact parameters in group environments and markedly lower HI densities for non-group galaxies. We suggest that these results likely arise from the combined effects of ram pressure stripping and tidal interactions present in group environments.

Lyman continuum leaking galaxies. Search strategies and local candidates

Star-forming dwarf galaxies leaking Lyman-continuum (LyC) radiation may have played an important role in the reionization of the Universe. Local galaxies exhibiting LyC leakage could shed light on the escape mechanisms, but so far only two such cases have been identified. Here we want to investigate whether the lack of local LyC emitters can be caused in part by biased selection criteria (e.g. strong H-alpha emission), and we present a novel method of selecting targets with high escape fractions. By applying these criteria, we assemble a sample of observation targets to study their basic properties. We introduce a new strategy where potential LyC leakers are selected by their blue colours and weak (instead of strong) emission lines. We take a closer look at 8 LyC leaking candidates at z ~ 0.03, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which we observe with ESO/NTT in broadband B and H-alpha. We find that 7 of the 8 galaxies are involved in interaction with neighbours or show signs of mergers. In 7 cases the young stellar population is clearly displaced from the main body of the galaxies. Half of our targets show absorption spectra with post-starburst signatures. The scale lengths in H-alpha are typically 30% smaller than those of the stellar continua, indicating ram pressure stripping. We tentatively identify a few conditions favourable for leakage: 1) the combined effects of ram pressure stripping with supernova winds from young stars formed in the front, 2) merger events that increase the star formation rate and displace stars from gas, 3) starbursts in the centres of post-starburst galaxies, and 4) a low dust content.
