Effect of Surfactant Concentration on the Behavior of Single Oxygen Bubble in Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

The control of bubble growth and departure during the process of photoelectrochemical water splitting is crucial for enhancing gas production efficiency. By introducing varying concentrations of surfactants into the electrolyte and using a synchronous measurement system, we examined how the change in surfactant concentration affects bubble nucleation and growth characteristics. The results indicate that bubbles' critical nucleation potentials initially decrease and subsequently increase with increasing surfactant concentration, reaching a minimum value when the concentration is 1 × 10-7 M. In contrast, bubble growth periods and departure diameters reach their maximum values. Further analysis shows that the gas production rate and the average gas evolution efficiency reach their maximum when the surfactant concentration is 1 × 10-7 M, indicating that adding an appropriate amount of surfactant is advantageous for gas production. In addition, a force equilibrium model incorporating the Marangoni force at various surfactant concentrations was developed to predict oxygen bubbles' departure diameter. The predicted values exhibit excellent concurrence with the experimental data. The solutal Marangoni force is the primary determinant that affects bubble departure diameter when the surfactant concentrations are below approximately 4 × 10-6 M, while the thermal Marangoni force assumes precedence when concentrations exceed about 4 × 10-6 M.

Characterization of N2 foam flow with in-situ capillarypressure measurements in a high-permeability homogeneous sandpack: effect of surfactant concentration and flowrate

Determining the capillary pressure during foam flow in porous media is important because bubbles are thought to coalesce by lamella rupture as the "limiting capillary pressure" is approached. In this study, the role of surfactant concentration on capillary pressure and apparent viscosity of a foam flowing, at different flowrates, through porous media was explored. An in-house capillary-pressure probe was constructed, and it was utilized to characterize the capillary pressure of a foam flowing in a 145-Darcy homogenous sandpack. In-situ capillary pressures were determined for seven foam-quality-scan experiments with different gas velocities and surfactant concentrations. By comparing the test results, collected under different flowrates and surfactant concentrations, the apparent viscosity and the capillary pressure decreased for a quality greater than the transition foam quality, at the peak of apparent viscosity. The transition foam quality increases with increasing surfactant concentration and flow rate. For the slowest velocity, a minimum surfactant concentration is required to generate strong foam. While above this minimum surfactant concentration, foam-apparent viscosity is similar for different surfactant concentrations at the same velocity.

Adsorption Behavior of Fluorocarbon Surfactants on Polytetrafluoroethylene Surface

By using the sessile drop method, the wetting properties of nonionic fluorocarbon surfactants (FNS-1 and FNS-2) and anionic fluorocarbon surfactant (FAS) solutions on the surface of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were investigated. Meanwhile, the effects of surfactant concentration on the contact angle, adhesion tension, PTFE–liquid interfacial tension, and work of adhesion of the fluorocarbon surfactant with different structures were detected. The results demonstrate that the adsorption amount of the three fluorocarbon surfactants at the air–liquid interface is 1.5~2 times higher than their adsorption amount at the PTFE–solution interface. Before critical micelle concentration (CMC), the fluorocarbon surfactant molecules rely on their hydrophobic groups to adsorb on the PTFE surface. The smallest molecular size of FNS-2 results in the largest adsorption amount, while electrostatic repulsion and large steric hindrance result in the smallest adsorption amount for FAS. Above CMC, the fluorocarbon surfactants form semi-micelles to adsorb on the PTFE surface. The hydrophilic modification ability of the three fluorocarbon surfactants for the PTFE surface is stronger than that of reported surfactants, and the contact angle can be reduced to about 20° at high concentrations. The order of the hydrophilic modification ability is FNS-2 > FNS-1 > FAS. Hydrophilic EO groups can effectively enhance the hydrophilicity of FNS-1 and FNS-2. Due to the hydrophobic -CH3 group and the smaller adsorption amount, FNS-1 possesses a weaker hydrophilic modification ability than FNS-2. Investigating the adsorption behavior of fluorocarbon surfactants on the PTFE surface can help us to better utilize fluorocarbon surfactants. This could have broad implications for colloid and interface science.

Formulation and Optimization of Solid Lipid Nanoparticle-based Gel for Dermal Delivery of Linezolid Using Taguchi Design.

Linezolid (LNZ) is a synthetic oxazolidinone antibiotic approved for the treatment of uncomplicated and complicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by gram-positive bacteria. Typically, LNZ is administered orally or intravenously in most cases. However, prolonged therapy is associated with various side effects and life threatening complications. Cutaneous application of LNZ will assist in reducing the dose, hence minimizing the unwanted side/adverse effects associated with oral administration. Dermal delivery provides an alternative route of administration, facilitating a local and sustained concentration of the antimicrobial at the site of infection. The current research work aimed to formulate solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) based gel for dermal delivery of LNZ in the management of uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections to maximise its benefits and minimise the side effects. SLNs were prepared by high-shear homogenisation and ultrasound method using Dynasan 114 as solid lipid and Pluronic F-68 as surfactant. The effect of surfactant concentration, drug-to-lipid ratio, and sonication time was investigated on particle size, zeta potential, and entrapment efficiency using the Taguchi design. The main effect plot of means and signal-to-noise ratio were generated to determine the optimized formulation. The optimized batch was formulated into a gel, and ex-vivo permeation study, in-vitro and in-vivo antibacterial activity were conducted. The optimised process parameters to achieve results were 2% surfactant concentration, a drug-to-lipid ratio of 1:2, and 360 s of sonication time. The optimized batch was 206.3± 0.17nm in size with a surface charge of -24.4± 4.67mV and entrapment efficiency of 80.90 ± 0.45%. SLN-based gel demonstrated anomalous transport with an 85.43% in vitro drug release. The gel showed a 5 cm zone of inhibition while evaluated for in vitro antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Ex-vivo skin permeation studies demonstrated 20.308% drug permeation and 54.96% cutaneous deposition. In-vivo results showed a significant reduction in colony-forming units in the group treated with LNZ SLN-based gel. Ex-vivo studies ascertain the presence of the drug at the desired site and improve therapy. In-vivo results demonstrated the ability of SLN-based gel to significantly reduce the number of bacteria in the stripped infection model. The utilization of SLN as an LNZ carrier holds significant promise in dermal delivery.

Emulsification and interfacial characteristics of different surfactants enhances heavy oil recovery: experimental evaluation and molecular dynamics simulation study

The high viscosity and poor fluidity of heavy oil challenge its extraction, leading to the widespread use of surfactant emulsification to reduce viscosity and enhance recovery. This study evaluated three surfactants—sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium oleate (SO), and APG0810—for their suitability and effectiveness in the X reservoir. The solution properties of these surfactants were analyzed and their micro-mechanisms investigated using MD calculations. The effects of surfactant concentration and additives on emulsification and viscosity reduction were elucidated. Ultimately, a system for emulsification and viscosity reduction was selected for physical simulation research. The experimental findings show that SO reduces interfacial tension from 52.4 mN/m to 0.0027 mN/m, transforming lipophilic surfaces into hydrophilic. MD analyses reveal SO’s optimal interfacial properties, with the lowest interfacial energy of −6423.4 kcal/mol, maximum interfacial thickness of 2.56 nm, and minimal diffusion coefficient of 0.4087 Å2/ps at the oil-water interface. These findings align with experimental results, confirming SO’s superior interfacial properties. Combining 0.3% SO with 0.5% n-pentanol results in a 98% viscosity reduction. The emulsion shows excellent stability, with no water separation in the first 30 min and only 8.3% after 2 h. Physical simulation results show that in high(low) permeability core displacement experiments, system flooding and subsequent water flooding can increase recovery rates by 15.39%(36.91%), indicating the system’s potential for enhancing oil recovery in Reservoir X. The findings suggest that the implementation of this system not only boosts the crude oil recovery rate but also carries economic significance in the industry.

Development of a Water‐Based Pressure‐Sensitive Adhesive via Emulsion Polymerization for Packaging Tape Applications

Abstract In this study, water‐based pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were synthesized through an emulsion polymerization process using n‐butyl acrylate, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, and N‐vinylpyrrolidone monomers, in combination with anionic and non‐ionic surfactants. The PSA was coated onto the corona‐treated surface of a BOPP film using a Mayer bar to prepare packaging tape. The effect of surfactant concentration on the properties of the resulting copolymer and PSA was investigated. The chemical structure, component distribution, and thermal behavior of the copolymer were analyzed using FTIR, HPLC, and DSC. The physical properties of the synthesized copolymer, such as solid content, viscosity, particle size, and gel content, were also determined. The performance of the prepared packaging tapes was evaluated through loop tack, 180° peel, and holding shear time tests. The results indicated that surfactant concentration significantly affected the adhesive's performance. Notably, the use of a 2.5 wt% surfactant mixture yielded promising results, with high monomer conversions and excellent adhesion properties in the tape.

Surfactant-enhanced mobilization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from an historically contaminated marine sediment: Study of surfactants’ concentration effect and continuous test for sediment flushing simulation

Contamination of marine sediments by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) poses a significant environmental threat, necessitating effective remediation strategies. This paper investigates the application of surfactants, both synthetic and natural, for the remediation of PAH-contaminated sediments, providing a systematic guideline for the preliminary selection of surfactants for flushing/washing operations, the optimal operative conditions, and the technical approach for PAH mobilization, especially in the context of a real aged contamination scenario. The study included a batch configuration test to evaluate the effect of surfactant concentration on PAH mobilization. Subsequently, a continuous configuration column experiment was performed to simulate a flushing operation of contaminated sediment. The study of process conditions highlighted that the increase in surfactant concentration led to a significant increase in PAH removal from the sediment, reaching almost 30 % efficiency using a 5 % wt surfactant solution. The column test showed great efficiency of the investigated surfactants in PAH mobilization through the flushing process of the contaminated matrix, resulting in 30 times greater efficiency than water within a much smaller pore volume range.

Study of Interfacial Properties of Anionic–Nonionic Surfactants Based on Succinic Acid Derivatives via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and the IGMH Method

Surfactants are widely used in fields such as oil recovery and flotation. The properties and mechanisms of surfactants can be effectively studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Herein, the aggregation behavior of surfactants was studied at the oil–water interface by MD simulation, and the micro-morphology of surfactants was analyzed under a low concentration and saturated state at the oil–water interface, respectively. The visualization results of the MD simulation showed that DTOA was saturated at the oil–water interface at 120 surfactant molecules, whereas 160 surfactant molecules were required for BEMA. In addition, the effect of surfactant concentration on the interfacial thickness and hydrogen bond distribution was studied, with the inflection point of hydrogen bond distribution identified as a characteristic parameter for surfactant saturation at the oil–water interface. The aggregation behavior of their hydrophobic and hydrophilic chains at the oil–water interface was qualitatively assessed using order parameters. Finally, the aggregation state of surfactants in salt-containing systems was studied, and it was found that the surfactants could effectively adsorb magnesium ions and calcium ions at the oil–water interface. However, the curve of the number of hydrogen bonds varies greatly, with a possible reason being that BEMA has a different coordination manner with diverse metal ions. This study provides some original insights into both the theoretical study and practical application of anionic and nonionic surfactants.
