Effect of deformation rate on the flexural fracture behaviour of long bones.

In this study fresh rabbit femora were tested in a three-point bending mode under six different rates of deformation ranging from 0·0423 to 254 mm s−1. Various mechanical parameters such as the ultimate bending load, bending stiffness and energy absorption capacity were determined. The maximum bending load and the bending stiffness increased by 50 and 46 per cent, respectively, at the highest rate of deformation as compared with the lowest. The ultimate deformation and energy absorbed decreased to 47 and 50 per cent, respectively, when the rate of deformation was increased from 0·0423 mm s−1 to 88·6 mm s−1. At the fastest speed of deformation the fracture was mostly comminuted, producing an increase in the total energy absorbed to fail the specimens.

Effect of rate on soil shear strength and soil-metal friction I. Shear strength

The effect of deformation rate on the shear strength of a sandy and a clay soil has been examined in a new laboratory rig designed to shear soil in the range equivalent to 0.0015-5 m/s sliding speed. Soil cohesion was found to vary logarithmically with deformation rate over a wide range of moisture contents. The soil internal friction angle was independent of deformation rate and the residual shear strength did not vary in a consistent manner with deformation rate. The results have important bearing on the efficiency of soil working operations such as cultivation, earth moving and traction.

Compressive and flexural tests were made to reveal the mechanical behaviour. In the case of compressive tests, the increase in the deformation rate caused on increase of elastic modulus and a decrease of breaking stress and strain. In the case of flexural tests, different results in breaking stress were obtained. The results indicate that the following two problems must be elucidated for practical use of polymers in magnets, ie (i) impact strength of the polymers, (ii) the stress condition applied to the polymers in the magnet.

The Effect of Deformation Rate and Other Factors on the Force Required to Fracture Egg Shells in Measuring Shell Strength

The measurment of egg shell strength by quasi-static instrumental techniques is empirical so that the test conditions must be controlled to obtain comparable data. Factors that influence egg shell strength measurements were examined and include the effects of: a) the response of the force recording equipment, b) the rate of deforming the egg, which is exponential, c) perturbations in the force-deformation relations, d) the mechanical details of the test instrument, e) the temperature, humidity and age of the egg when the measurement is taken, and f) other yet unknown factors. At present, all the factors that affect quasi-static shell strength measurements are not fully understood. Thus, it is too soon to establish standard test procedures for universal application. Until the mechanical techniques presently used to measure egg shell strength can be standardized, details of the methods applied, the equipment used and its accuracy under the test conditions should be described when shell strength data are reported.

The Effect of Deformation Rate on the Relationship Between Sensory and Instrumental Measurements of Meat Tenderness by the Warner-Bratzler Method

Sensory and instrumental readings of beef tenderness were compared within a narrow range of texture using the longissimus dorsi muscles from roasts taken from 3 breeds at 3 carcass weights. The results indicated that under these conditions the Warner-Bratzler readings were not strongly related to sensory perceptions of tenderness and that deformation rates ranging from 2.5 to 155cm/min did not affect the relationship. There was no advantage in using high deformation rates only the disadvantages introduced by the more complex recording apparatus required. Further research is needed to determine if these conditions prevail in a wide range of meat texture.

The Influence of Strain Hardening and Strain-Rate Sensitivity on Sheet Metal Forming

The current understanding of sheet metal stamping processes is discussed in the light of materials’ ability to distribute plastic strains in uniaxial and biaxial deformation. The focus is on the plastic flow properties, namely strain hardening and strain-rate sensitivity. Distribution of strain from uniaxial tensile specimens and sheets stretched over a rigid punch are presented for a number of sheet materials to illustrate the importance of these properties. Some effects of deformation rate are also presented.

Effects of deformation rate and cooling conditions on low temperature plasticity of stainless iron-chromium-nickel steels

The thermal model described previously (CRYOGENICS, Vol 16 No 9 (1976) 533) is used to explain experimental results obtained by measuring the effect of deformation rate and cooling conditions on low temperature plastic strain. The samples used were polycrystalline phase-transition stable Fe-Cr-Ni alloy steels.

1. We investigated the effect of deformation rate on the ultimate strength of iron alloyed with chromium that was strengthened by strain hardening. It was found that the strength decreased above a certain deformation rate, called the critical. 2. From a special experiment we determined the conditions resulting in instrumental error in tests in the TsVIK machine. The general conditions are given for the possibility of using high deformation rates excluding instrumental error—the inertial time lag in recording the force. 3. An equation was proposed for the change in strength at supercritical deformation rates. The parameters of this equation are the critical deformation rate vdcr and the weakening coefficient k.

Deformation rate effects on the attenuation during loading, unloading and reloading of aluminum crystals

The influence of deformation rate on the ultrasonic attenuation of aluminum single crystals has been investigated over a strain rate range from 2 × 10 −5 sec −1 to 20 sec −1. In order to make this study a technique was developed which permits ultrasonic attenuation measurements to be made up to a rate of 1800 measurements/sec. The attenuation data exhibit marked strain rate effects in comparison with conventional stress-strain curves. In addition, attenuation data recorded during the rapid recovery period immediately subsequent to unloading show that the recovery behavior is dependent on the rate of removal of the externally applied load. Subsequent microplastic loading experiments are also affected by the initial deformation rate.
