Using cognitive behavioral intervention to prevent substance use among university students: comparative study

Purpose This paper aims to evaluate effectiveness of cognitive behavioral intervention (CBI) to prevent substance use among first-year university students at high risk of substance use. Design/methodology/approach Sixty university students at high risk for substance use recruited and assigned to CBI and control groups (30 students per groups). Intervention impact was assessed on measures of attitudes toward substance use at three time points: baseline, postintervention and three-months postintervention. Findings The analysis showed that participants’ negative attitudes toward substance use in the intervention group was increased post intervention. Although the mean score was significantly higher than the baseline (Time I) at Time II and dropped at Time III, the mean scores remained higher than time I, using repeated measure ANOVA (p < 0.05). Practical implications Findings of this study provide evidence that CBI is effective to sustain substance abstinence among this age group. Originality/value The paper is testing effectiveness CBI among a high-risk population of substance use. The study is highlighting the importance of sustaining substance abstinence using psychological preventive methods.

Efficacy of Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study examined the effects of cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia. A randomized controlled trial was performed on 44 women. The intervention included one group session of sleep hygiene education and four individual sessions of counseling. The instruments included the Insomnia Severity Index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and Menopausal quality of life. The data were analyzed using repeated measure MANOVA, followed by repeated measure ANOVA. Repeated measure MANOVA showed that time had a significant main effect on the anthropometric variables (body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressures) and revealed significant main effects of the group and time on the psychosocial variables (sleep quality, insomnia, depressive symptoms, and quality of life) (p < .05). Repeated measure ANOVA results indicated a significant effect of the group on insomnia and sleep quality (p < .05). Overall, the intervention was effective in improving insomnia and poor sleep quality.

The Effectiveness of CBTAC Protocol on Burdens of Alzheimer’s Disease on Caregivers and their Sense of Coherence

Background: Alzheimer’s disease is predicted to increase dramatically in the near future. Alzheimer’s caregiving brings about severe problems for caregivers. Considering the corrosive consequences of Alzheimer’s disease on Alzheimer’s caregivers, finding an effective intervention is necessary. Thus, the present research conducted by the aim of investigating the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatment for Alzheimer’s disease patients and their caregiver’s protocol on burdens of Alzheimer’s disease on caregivers and their sense of coherence (SOC). Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest control group design. The target population included all mild Alzheimer’s disease patients and their caregivers referred to the neurology ward of the hospitals in Rasht during summer 2018. According to the medical records and results of screening, 40 mild Alzheimer’s disease, patients and their caregivers recruited by convenience sampling method. After sampling, research participants randomly assigned into two experimental (n= 20) and waitlist control (n=20) groups. The Impact of Alzheimer’s Disease on Caregiver Questionnaire and SOC scale were used to measure the burdens of Alzheimer’s disease on caregivers and caregivers’ SOC. The CBTAC provided for the experimental group participants in 25 sessions of 90-minutes. In the end, the data analyze has done by multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and using SPSS24 software. Results: The findings indicated that the CBTAC had a significant effect on the burdens and SOC of Alzheimer’s caregivers in the experimental group (P&lt;0.01). In other words, the CBTAC decreases burdens and increase the SOC of Alzheimer’s caregivers significantly (P&lt;0.01). Conclusion: Based on the research results, the CBTAC is an effective intervention in decreasing caregiving burden and the increasing SOC of Alzheimer’s caregivers. Therefore, CBTAC is a multicomponent intervention that can be used to improve the competency and mental health of Alzheimer’s caregivers.

Increases in utilization of psychosocial resources mediate effects of cognitive-behavioural intervention on dementia caregivers’ quality of life

ABSTRACT In this study, we advance dementia caregiver intervention research by drawing on the tenets of positive psychology. We investigate the mediating mechanisms of a cognitive-behavioural intervention incorporating resource activation as a superordinate, strength-based heuristic on dementia caregivers’ quality of life (QoL). QoL captures the full spectrum of human functioning (i.e. not just the absence of suffering). We examine the utilization of resources related to well-being (i.e. enhancing positive experiences) and coping with daily hassles (i.e. reducing negative experiences) as two distinct potential mechanisms. Two hundred and seventy-three dementia caregivers were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 139) or control group (n = 134). Multiple mediation analyses indicated that utilization of resources related to well-being and coping mediated the effects of the intervention on caregivers’ psychological, physical and overall QoL & health at post-test and 6-month follow-up. (Re-)activating resources from both domains appears to be more effective than focusing on just one domain.

PROTOCOL: A comparison of the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural interventions based on delivery features for elevated symptoms of depression in adolescents.

This is the protocol for a Campbell review. The primary aim is to estimate the relative efficacy of different modes of CBT delivery compared with control conditions for reducing depressive symptoms in adolescents. The secondary aim is to compare the different modes of delivery with regards to intervention completion/attrition (used as a proxy for intervention acceptability). The review will provide relative effect estimates and ranking probabilities for each outcome based on intervention delivery.

Observation on the effect of cognitive behavioral intervention in patients with ischemic stroke in convalescent stage

目的 探讨认知行为干预在缺血性脑卒中恢复期患者中的应用效果。 方法 选择舟山医院2018年1月至2019年1月收治的缺血性脑卒中恢复期患者96例为观察对象，采用随机数字表法分为对照组48例、观察组48例。对照组患者接受常规护理干预措施，观察组患者在对照组基础上接受认知行为干预。比较两组患者干预前后的自我效能、生活质量、睡眠质量评分的变化。 结果 干预后，观察组自我效能感量表(GSES)评分[(30.8±4.2)分]高于对照组[(26.5±4.5)分](t＝4.840，P<0.05)，生存质量测定量表(QOL-100)评分[(97.5±13.2)分]高于对照组[(80.5±10.6)分](t＝6.957，P<0.05)，匹兹堡睡眠质量指数(PSQI)量表评分[(7.3±4.2)分]低于对照组[(10.2±4.0)分](t＝3.464，P<0.05)。 结论 认知行为干预能够有效提高缺血性脑卒中恢复期患者的自我效能，改善睡眠质量与生活质量。

Additive effectiveness of contingency management on cognitive behavioural treatment for smokers with depression: Six-month abstinence and depression outcomes

BackgroundDepression and smoking co-occur at high rates and there is a lack of evidence on the efficacy of treatments specifically tailored to this population. This randomized controlled trial sought to compare the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) combined with behavioural activation (BA) and the same treatment protocol plus contingency management (CM). MethodsA sample of 120 adult smokers (70.8%: females) with severe depressive symptoms were randomly allocated to: CBT + BA (n = 60) or CBT + BA + CM (n = 60). Smoking and depression outcomes were reported at end of treatment, 1-, 2-, 3-, and 6-month follow-ups. Self-reported smoking status was biochemically verified, and depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II. ResultsAt end of treatment, the overall quit rate was 69.2% (83/120). CM showed an additive effect on CBT + BA in enhancing abstinence rates. The significant effect of group [F(1,155) = 9.55, p = .0024], time [F(4,96) = 7.93, p < .0001], and group by time interaction [F(4,96) = 6.12, p = .0002], indicated that CM is more effective for generating longer durations of abstinence beyond those of CBT+BA. All treatment conditions equally promoted sustained reductions in depression across time [F(1,111) = 0.53, p = .4665]. A greater number of days of continuous abstinence and lower depressive symptoms mutually influenced each other. ConclusionsDepressed smokers achieve high cessation rates without suffering negative mood changes. Quitting smoking is not detrimental and adding CM to CBT + BA enhances long-lasting abstinence rates while promoting large depression improvements.

Effect of cognitive behavioral therapy on health literacy of patients with permanent urinary stoma

Objective To explore the effect of cognitive behavioral intervention on improving the health literacy of patients with bladder cancer undergoing total cystectomy and ureterodermatostomy. Methods Totally eighty patients with bladder cancer after radical cystectomy and ureterodermatostomy from December 2016 to June 2018 in a Class Ⅲ Grade A hospital in Harbin were selected and randomly divided into the control group (n=40) and experimental group (n=40) . The patients in the control group received routine nursing care whereas the experimental group were treated with cognitive behavioral therapy on the basis of routine nursing care. The effects of intervention in the two groups was compared by the use of Health Literacy Self-rating Scale before and 1 month after intervention. Results One month after intervention, the total score of health literacy in the experimental group was (101.82±9.43) and that in the control group was (87.87±10.96) . The difference was statistically significant (t=6.102, P < 0.05) . Conclusions The cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective way to improve the health literacy of patients with bladder cancer after radical cystectomy and ureterodermatostomy. Evaluation of Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Chinese International Students in Hong Kong

Objectives:This study aims to test the effectiveness of a culturally attuned cognitive behavioral intervention (CBI) in promoting mental health and quality of life (QOL) among Chinese international students in Hong Kong.Method:A waitlist control designed was adopted. Sixty-five Chinese international students in a university in Hong Kong were assigned to experimental groups and control groups. The intervention consisted of eight weekly 3-hr sessions. All the participants were assessed preintervention, postintervention, and at a 3-month follow-up.Results:Participants in the experimental group showed a significant and continuous increase in mental health and overall QOL compared to those in the control group. Changes of dysfunctional attitudes mediated the effect of CBI on mental health and QOL.Conclusion:The current culturally attuned CBI may be useful in improving mental health and QOL among Chinese international students in Hong Kong.

Effect Evaluation of Cognitive Behavioral Intervention on Stress Response in Breast Cancer Patients

Objective: To investigate the effects of cognitive behavioral intervention on psychological stress response in breast cancer patients by cognitive behavioral intervention in breast cancer patients. Methods: Adopting the random comparison method, 100 patients with breast cancer were divided into comparison group and intervention group by 50 cases. The intervention group underwent cognitive behavioral intervention at the same time as the comparison group only received conventional treatment without cognitive behavioral intervention. Two groups of breast cancer patients were enrolled in the general questionnaire, the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) within one week after admission and one month after treatment to understand the psychological stress levels of the two groups. Results: There was no significant difference in the scores of SAS and MCMQ between the intervention group and the comparison group before intervention (P > 0.05). But after intervention, the scores of SAS and MCMQ in the comparison group were significantly higher than those in the intervention group (P 0.05). It shows that the implementation of cognitive behavioral intervention therapy for breast cancer patients has the effect of improving their psychological status. Conclusion: Cognitive behavioral intervention therapy combined with psychology for breast cancer patients can effectively reduce their stress level, improve mental health status and improve their positive coping ability.

Are there preferred coping and communication strategies while undergoing IVF, and do cognitive behavioral interventions help?

PurposeCoping and communication strategies affect how one perceives potentially stressful life events, such as infertility. Cognitive behavioral interventions (CBI) can reduce the distress related to undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of CBI on the coping and communication skills as well as perceived stress and depressive symptoms of women undergoing IVF treatment. The authors also explored the relationship between coping strategies and pregnancy rates.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted a randomized controlled trial of CBI in 50 women undergoing IVF (NCT00685282).FindingsThe authors found that CBI was associated with reductions in active-confrontive coping among over 50 percent of participants, which was also found to be positively related to depressive symptoms. Furthermore, high meaning-based coping at baseline and high-avoidant coping at the end of IVF treatment were associated with increased pregnancy rates.Research limitations/implicationsCBI can be helpful in reducing the perceived stress of women undergoing IVF; however, the adaptiveness of individual coping skills and communication skills vary. Since different coping strategies seem to be of benefit at different time points, further studies might benefit from the examination of engaging in context-dependent coping strategies.Practical implicationsIntegrating mental health care on infertility units may assist in reducing the stress and thus quality of care in women undergoing IVF. Mental health care can be tailored to meet the individual needs of infertility patients based on their preferred coping strategies and communication style. Further research is needed to examine the cost benefit of reducing perceived stress in fertility patients.Social implicationsInfertility is a social and medical problem that has vast implications on the mental health of individuals. Providing support along with practical tools for stress reduction and improved coping and communication can result in reduced stress and improved coping.Originality/valueThis paper examined the effect of a cognitive behavioral intervention on the coping strategies and communication skills of women undergoing IVF and can contribute to our understanding of the value of integrating mental health and medical care.

Cognitive behavioral treatments for insomnia and pain in adults with comorbid chronic insomnia and fibromyalgia: clinical outcomes from the SPIN randomized controlled trial.

To examine the effects of cognitive behavioral treatments for insomnia (CBT-I) and pain (CBT-P) in patients with comorbid fibromyalgia and insomnia. One hundred thirteen patients (Mage = 53, SD = 10.9) were randomized to eight sessions of CBT-I (n = 39), CBT-P (n = 37), or a waitlist control (WLC, n = 37). Primary (self-reported sleep onset latency [SOL], wake after sleep onset [WASO], sleep efficiency [SE], sleep quality [SQ], and pain ratings) and secondary outcomes (dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep [DBAS]; actigraphy and polysomnography SOL, WASO, and SE; McGill Pain Questionnaire; Pain Disability Index; depression; and anxiety) were examined at posttreatment and 6 months. Mixed effects analyses revealed that both treatments improved self-reported WASO, SE, and SQ relative to control at posttreatment and follow-up, with generally larger effect sizes for CBT-I. DBAS improved in CBT-I only. Pain and mood improvements did not differ by group. Clinical significance analyses revealed the proportion of participants no longer reporting difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep was higher for CBT-I posttreatment and for both treatments at 6 months relative to control. Few participants achieved >50% pain reductions. Proportion achieving pain reductions of >30% (~1/3) was higher for both treatments posttreatment and for CBT-I at 6 months relative to control. CBT-I and CBT-P improved self-reported insomnia symptoms. CBT-I prompted improvements of larger magnitude that were maintained. Neither treatment improved pain or mood. However, both prompted clinically meaningful, immediate pain reductions in one third of patients. Improvements persisted for CBT-I, suggesting that CBT-I may provide better long-term pain reduction than CBT-P. Cognitive processes mediate the effects of insomnia treatment: evidence from a randomized wait-list controlled trial

IntroductionBoth guided online and individual face-to-face cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) are effective in improving insomnia symptoms and sleep efficiency. Little is known about the underlying mechanisms generating this effect. The present study tests the assumption that pre-sleep arousal, sleep-related worry and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep are mediators in the effect of cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia. MethodsA secondary analysis was performed on data previously collected from a randomized controlled trial (N = 90). In this trial, participants were randomized to either a face-to-face CBT-I condition, an internet-delivered CBT-I condition, or a wait-list group. This article reports on the efficacy of these interventions on pre-sleep arousal, sleep-related worry, and dysfunctional beliefs. Furthermore, we investigated whether these measures mediated the treatment effect on insomnia severity and sleep efficiency. ResultsBoth treatment modalities were efficacious for these cognitive measures; however, face-to-face treatment showed superiority over the online treatment. All three cognitive measures mediated the effect on insomnia severity. Sleep-related worry and pre-sleep arousal mediated the effect on sleep efficiency, but dysfunctional beliefs did not. ConclusionOverall, these results point toward the importance of cognitive processes in the treatment of insomnia, implying that psychological treatments for insomnia may best be guided by (also) targeting these cognitive processes.

Treatment of trauma related anger in operation enduring freedom, operation Iraqi freedom, and operation New Dawn veterans: Rationale and study protocol.

BackgroundProblems with anger and aggression are highly prevalent in Veterans of multiple war eras, including the most recent conflicts in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom; OEF) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom; OIF). The consequences of these problems, such as increased rates of divorce, domestic violence, occupational instability, arrests and incarceration, are often devastating. Despite the seriousness of these problems, relatively little is known about effective treatments for anger in Veterans.Method and designThis paper describes the rationale and study protocol of a randomized controlled trial comparing an adapted cognitive behavioral intervention (CBI) with an active control condition (supportive intervention, SI) for the treatment of anger problems in OEF/OIF Veterans. The sample includes 92 OEF/OIF Veterans, randomized to CBI or SI. Both treatments include 12 weekly, 75-min individual sessions. Participants are assessed at baseline, after sessions 4 and 8, at post-treatment, and at 3 and 6 months post-treatment. Primary outcomes are reduction in anger and aggression; secondary outcomes are improved functioning and quality of life. We hypothesize that CBI will be associated with significantly more improvement than SI on primary and secondary measures.DiscussionFindings from this study will help to address the gap in evidence for effective treatments for anger in Veterans. The use of an active control condition will provide a stringent test of the effects of CBI beyond that of common factors of psychotherapy such as therapeutic relationship, mobilization of hope, and support. Findings have the potential to improve treatment outcomes for Veterans struggling with post-deployment anger problems.

Effects of cognitive-behavioral intervention on anxiety, depression and life quality in inflammatory bowel disease patients: a Meta analysis

Objective To explore the effects of cognitive behavior therapy on anxiety, depression and life quality in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) . Methods The Cochrane Library, Pubmed, EMbase, CNKI, China biological medicine (CBM) , WanFang were searched and the randomised controlled trials (RCTs) related to cognitive-behavioral intervention for IBD data was collected. The RevMan 5.3 was used in statistical analysis. Results A total of 12 RCTs were enrolled in the study. Results showed that cognitive behavior therapy could improve patients' life quality [WMD=7.78, 95%CI (3.30, 12.27) , P=0.000 7], relieve anxiety [SMD=-0.47, 95%CI (-0.78, -0.16) , P=0.01]and depression [SMD=-2.48, 95%CI (-3.13, -1.83) , P 0.05) . Conclusions In this systematic review, cognitive-behavioral intervention can improve life quality of patients with IBD and can relieve anxiety and depression of patients with IBD in the short term but with no effects in the long term. Effect of cognitive behavioral intervention on the anxiety of patients with peripherally inserted central catheter

目的 探讨认知行为干预对经外周置入中心静脉导管(PICC)患者焦虑情绪的影响。 方法 将64例PICC置管患者按入院日单双号分为观察组32例和对照组32例，对照组给予常规的置管护理，观察组在对照组的基础上采取认知行为干预。比较两组患者在PICC置管时的焦虑程度及对护理操作的满意度。 结果 观察组置管前焦虑评分(56.15±10.66)分，对照组(55.75±11.26)分，差异无统计学意义(t＝1.77，P>0.05)；观察组置管后焦虑评分(47.31±15.23)分，对照组(54.96±12.35)分，两组差异有统计学意义(t＝15.02，P<0.05)。观察组患者对护理工作的满意度高于对照组，两组总满意率(观察组53.1%，对照组93.7%)差异有统计学意义(χ2＝13.537，P<0.01)。 结论 认知行为干预能降低PICC置管患者的焦虑程度。

Effects of combining contingency management with behavioral activation for smokers with depression

Background: Few studies on Behavioral Activation (BA) have been conducted among smokers with depression and very scarce evidence on Contingency Management (CM) in this population exists. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) plus BA and the same treatment alongside CM on smoking abstinence and depression at the end of treatment.Method: A sample of 74 treatment-seeking smokers (78.4% female) were randomly assigned to two treatment conditions delivered in 90-minute sessions over 8 weeks: CBT + BA (n = 41), or CBT + BA + CM (n = 33). Depression was assessed through clinical interviews and using the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Smoking abstinence was verified through both carbon monoxide and urinalyses.Results: A greater percentage of patients receiving CBT + BA + CM attended all treatment sessions than those in CBT + BA (93.5% vs 71.1%). Among the total sample, 67.6% gave up smoking at the end of treatment. Abstinence rates were equivalent for CBT + BA and CBT + BA + CM at post-treatment (63% vs 72.7%). Participants showed a statistically significant improvement in depressive symptoms with no differences across treatments (CBT + BA: Mdn = 11, IQR = 5, 15 vs CBT + BA + CM: Mdn = 10, IQR = 5, 14).Conclusions: Findings support and expand previous evidence by showing that smokers with depression achieve high cessation rates without suffering negative mood changes. These results also offer a novel contribution by suggesting that BA and CM are promising interventions for this difficult to treat population. Additionally, research exploring long-term effects of both treatments is warranted.

The Effect of Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions on Sexual Satisfaction in Type II Diabetic Patients

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that leads to many problems including psychological problems such as depression, anxiety and reduced sexual satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral interventions on sexual satisfaction in type 2 diabetic patients referred to Bushehr medical centers in 1394. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cognitive-behavioral interventions on the sexual satisfaction of type II diabetic patients referred to Bushehr clinics in 1394. Method: This is a quasi-experimental study and this research was done as a pre and post test with a control group. The statistical population included all type II diabetic patients referred to the medical centers of Bushehr city. Of these, 40 subjects were selected by simple random sampling and assigned to two groups of intervention (20 subjects) and control (20 persons). In the intervention group, ten sessions and each session were treated cognitive-behavioral group therapy for one hour in a week. Data collection was done using the Hudson Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 18, descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, standard deviation) and ancova analysis at a significant level of P <0.05. Results: The mean sexual satisfaction of the intervention and control groups after intervention was 95.00 and 75.74, Respectively . The mean of sexual satisfaction score in the intervention group was significantly more than the control group(p=0/048) and, in other hand , cognitive behavioral intervention was effective in increasing the sexual satisfaction of patients with type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: Using psychological treatments beside drug therapy can be effective in increasing the sexual satisfaction of type 2 diabetic patients.
