Development of Storybook to Improve Early Children's Reading Ability

Early childhood reading skills are focused on recognizing reading materials such as magazines, daily journals, children's activity books, books of picture, animal series books, and other books that can improve children's early reading skills. This is rarely understood by some PAUD teachers in Indonesia, resulting in misunderstandings in learning activities. This research aims to develop children's story book by themes as an effort to stimulate early childhood reading skills. Another goal is to find out the feasibility of using children's story books by themes as an effort to stimulate early childhood reading skills. The methode of research used is research and development which is modified from the model developed by Borg and Gall. The research development procedure is carried out through six stages, (a) Collect of information (b) compiling product designs (c) product validation developed (d) product design improvements (e) limited product trials and (6) product results of children's story books. This research resulted in 3 children's story books entitled “Ikan Koi Si Penolong”, “Aku membantu Ayah”, and “Belanja bersama Ibu ". Three of books resulting from this development research have gone through the stages of expert validation tests by material experts with a percentage of 92.8%. Meanwhile, the media expert indicator obtained a percentage of 93.7%, which means this book is valid and can be tested on children. Then a trial was conducted by two users, namely the Al-Huda PAUD teacher in Kabupaten Tasikmalaya. The test results obtained the percentage of values of 96.8% and 93.7%, which means that books by themes are appropriate and can be used by teachers to stimulate early childhood reading skills. Peningkatan kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa kelas 1 SDN 01 Sengare melalui penggunaan media kartu kata

The research was designed in the form of classroom action research which was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Research data were collected through observation and tests at the end of each cycle. Based on the results of the research and discussion of classroom action research, it is shown that through the medium of word cards students' initial reading ability can be increased. This can be seen through the first cycle of completeness, it is known that 11 students who are declared complete with a percentage of 68.75% and students who do not complete as many as 5 people with a percentage of 31.25%; with an average score of 69.5. The percentage of completeness and the average value in the first cycle have not reached the indicators of research success so that it needs to be continued in the second cycle. The results of the second cycle showed students who completed 14 students with a classical completeness percentage of 87.5% with an average value of 90.5. In addition, student activity during the learning process also increased from 70% in the first cycle to 85% in the second cycle. From the results obtained, the researcher concluded that word card media could improve the early reading ability of 1st graders at SDN 01 Sengare.

Analysis of Early Reading Ability of Children in Group B of Kindergarten Tut Wuri Handayani Samahani Aceh Besar

Reading is an activity of following a series of writings arranged in a linear manner. Experience is an important aspect of the reading process. Children who have a lot of experience will have a wider opportunity in developing an understanding of vocabulary in reading. The formulation of the problem in this study, what activities are done in training beginning reading skills in group B in TK Tut Wuri Handayani Samahani Aceh Besar. How is the description of beginning reading ability in group B in TK Tut Wuri Handayani Samahani Aceh Besar. What are the obstacles faced by teachers in teaching beginning reading skills to group B children in TK Tut Wuri Handayani Samahani Aceh Besar. The purpose of this study is to see a picture of the activities given to children in group B in TK Tut Wuri Handayani Samahani Aceh Besar. To see the beginning reading ability in group B children in TK Tut Wuri Handayani Samahani Aceh Besar. To find out the obstacles faced by teachers on the ability to read beginning in group B children in TK Tut Wuri Handayani Samahani Aceh Besar. The type of research is Qualitative research The instrument used is an interview, the sample size is 1 principal and 2 classroom teachers. The results show that beginning reading is very important for early childhood which will be the foundation of the beginning of reading. Teachers who teach at TK Tut Wuri Handayani Aceh Besar, are very understanding about the development of children's reading and also teachers at TK Tut Wuri Handayani Aceh Besar always encourage children by providing creative media that can attract children's attention in beginning reading so that teachers provide reading learning start by using a system of play while learning.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERACTIVE-MULTIMEDIA-AIDED SO-CIAL COGNITIVE MODEL FOR EARLY READING LEARNING IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of interactive multimedia aided social cognitive model in early reading learning, implemented to improve students’ early reading skills. The model was implemented to 195 first- and second-graders in an elementary school in Bandung. Descriptive statistics analysis was conducted to measure the difference in students’ ability before and after the treatment, based on the result of pre- and post-test using EGRA instrument. Results of this study indicated that social cognitive learning could be combined with interactive multimedia to effectively improve students’ early reading ability. However, further study is required to understand why the model contributed lower significance towards improvement of word-reading skill than towards improvement of other aspects of early reading skills.

PENINGKATAN HASIL BELAJAR IPA MELALUI MODEL PEMBELAJARAN KOOPERATIF TIPE TEBAK KATA

The purpose of this research was to describe the implementation process play letter and word and to understand improving early reading ability of children in group B1 through play letter and word. The study was conducted on group B Kindergarten with of fiftten children. This study used action research methods by Kemmis and Taggart which consist of 4 stages (plan, action, observation and reflection). This study consisted of two cycles, each cycles consisting of 8 sessions. Data collecting techniques used observation, field notes and documentation. Data analysis using quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data analysis with descriptive statistics that compare the result obtained from the first cycle and the second cycle. Analysis of qualitative data by analizing data from the observation, fields notes and documentation during the study to the steps of data reduction, data display and data verification. The result of this study showed that there was the improving early reading ability through play letter and word using learning style visual, auditory and kinesthetic with score in pre cycle 34,8 had improvement to 51,4 and become 63,5 in cycle II and excellent growing category.

Improve the Ability to Learn to Read Early by Using SAS Methods

<p><em>Bahasa Indonesia is one of the fields of study taught in elementary schools, in the framework of coaching and passion and development of the age of elementary school children, the skills of Bahasa Indonesia are often an obstacle for students in terms of reading and writing. The purpose of the study, knowing the improvement of early reading skills using the Synthetic Analytics Structural (SAS) method. This type of research is Class Action Research using cycle models. The researchers showed that in the initial condition, the average reading skills of students were 67.71 with a classical completion rate of 42.85%. In cycle I, the average reading skills of students was 68.42 with a classical completion rate of 57.14%. In cycle II, the average student score was 76.71 with a classical completion rate of 85.71%. From the whole cycle that has been done, it can be concluded that the teacher has been able to improve the reading skills of the beginning of Grade I students by using the method of stuktural analytics sintatik. Each cycle always has a positive impact towards improving the development of early reading ability of Grade I students.</em></p>

Peningkatan Kemampuan Membaca Permulaan Siswa Kelas 1 SDN NEGLA 02 Melalui Media Kartu Huruf Kecamatan Losari

<p><em>The purpose of the research to be achieved is to find out whether letter card media can improve early reading skills in class I SDN Negla 02, Losari District, Brebes Regency. The variable that became the target of change in this classroom action research was to improve the early reading ability of first grade elementary school students, while the action variable used in this study was letter card media. This Classroom Action Research was carried out in two cycles with a total of 25 students, each cycle consisting of action planning, observation and reflection. From the results of the first cycle of action, the students' reading learning outcomes were obtained with an average value of 69 with a student percentage of 52%. The results of the second cycle of action obtained the results of students' early reading learning with an average value of 78.67 with a student percentage of 92%. Thus, it can be concluded that learning Indonesian (preliminary reading) with the use of letter card media can improve early reading skills in grade I SD Negeri Negla 02, Losari District, Brebes Regency.</em></p>

Reciprocal relations between reading skill and the neural basis of phonological awareness in 7- to 9-year-old children

By using a longitudinal design and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), our previous study (Wang et al., 2020) found a scaffolding effect of early phonological processing in the superior temporal gyrus (STG) in 6-year-old children on later behavioral reading skill in 7.5-year-old children. Other than this previous study, nothing is known about longitudinal change in the bidirectional relation between reading skill and phonological processing in the brain. To fill this gap, in the current study, we used the same experimental paradigm as in Wang et al. (2020) to measure children's reading skill and brain activity during an auditory phonological awareness task, but with children who were 7.5 years old at Time 1 (T1) and about 1.5 years later when they were 9 years old at Time 2 (T2). The phonological awareness task included both small grain (i.e., onset) and large grain (i.e., rhyme) conditions. In a univariate analysis, we found that better reading skill at T1 predicted lower brain activation in IFG at T2 for onset processing after controlling for brain activation and non-verbal IQ at T1. This suggests that early reading ability reduces the effort of phonemic access, thus supporting the refinement hypothesis. When using general psychophysiological interaction (gPPI), we found that higher functional connectivity from IFG to STG for rhyme processing at T1 predicted better reading skill at T2 after controlling for reading skill and non-verbal IQ at T1. This suggests that the early effectiveness of accessing rhyme representations scaffolds reading acquisition. As both results did not survive multiple comparison corrections, replication of these findings is needed. However, both findings are consistent with prior studies demonstrating that phonological access in the frontal lobe becomes important in older elementary school readers. Moreover, the refinement effect for onsets is consistent with the hypothesis that learning to read allows for better access of small grain phonology, and the scaffolding effect for rhymes supports the idea that reading progresses to larger grain orthography-to-phonology mapping in older skilled readers. The current study, along with our previous study on younger children, indicates that the development of reading skill is associated with (1) the early importance of the quality of the phonological representations to later access of these representations, and (2) early importance of small grain sizes to later development of large grain ones.

Pengaruh Media Busy Book Terhadap Kemampuan Membaca Awal Anak di Taman Kanak-Kanak

This research is an experimental research that aims to determine the effect of Busy Book media on the early reading ability of children treated with Busy Book, interactive learning media made of cloth (especially flannel) with bright colors, containing simple game activities that are capable of stimulate children's early reading skills. The research approach used is a quantitative approach with pre-experimental research type with one group pretest-posttest design. The population in this study were 36 people, and a sample of 10 children with a sample assessment by purposive sampling, The Tcount value obtained is 29 and ttable is 1.645, so it is obtained Tcount 29> ttable 1.645 = H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected, meaning that there is an effect of busy book media on children's early reading ability. This shows that the reading ability of the children who received treatment was the use of busy book media. data collection techniques using observation and treatment tests. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is an effect of the application of busy book media on children's early reading abilities in Bahana Kindergarten, Pangkajene Regency, South Sulawesi.

An Analysis of Early Reading Ability of Class 1 in Elementary School

This study aimed at describing students’ ability of early reading in SD Negeri 3 Ubud. This is a qualitative descriptive research. The samples were all of class I in total of 22 students comprising of 11 males and 11 females. The data were collected by using observation sheet and test of early reading ability. The data were analyzed by using Likert scale. The research finding showed that students’ ability of early reading of class I in SD Negeri 3 Ubud was categorized as good (B) with 85% percentage.

Digital technology use and early reading abilities among bilingual children in Singapore

Singapore has launched a bilingual education policy nationwide, which leads to three main home language environments amongst Chinese families, namely, Chinese dominant, Chinese-English bilingual families and English dominant families. However, little is known about the development of early reading abilities among Singapore children from these family backgrounds. Moreover, against the backdrop of technological advances in the digital age, how the use of digital technology may affect the development of early reading abilities remains understudied. In this study, 225 7-year-old Chinese Singaporean children with different home language environments were recruited from mainstream primary schools in Singapore to complete the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study reading comprehension tests and questionnaires. Evidence revealed that children’s reading ability and digital technology use in Chinese varied across home language environments. Also, the use of digital technology in both English and Chinese positively predicted the reading abilities in both languages respectively for children from English dominant families. The results provide interesting insights into the role of bilingualism and digital technology use in the development of early reading abilities. In view of the results, we also discuss and put forward suggestions on online reading education policy.

The contribution of serial order short-term memory and long-term learning to reading acquisition: A longitudinal study.

There is increasing evidence for an association between both serial order short-term memory (STM) and the long-term learning (LTL) of serial order information and reading abilities. In this developmental study, we examined the hypothesis that STM for serial order supports online grapheme-to-phoneme conversion processes during the initial stages of reading acquisition, whereas the LTL of serial order serves reading abilities at later stages, when reading starts to rely on more stable, long-term orthographic representations. We followed a sample of 116 French-speaking children from first (Time 1 [T1]) grade of primary school through second (Time 2 [T2]) and third (Time 3 [T3]) grade. Their serial order STM and LTL abilities as well as their reading abilities were assessed. Overall, we observed that early reading abilities were only predicted by serial order STM performance, while more advanced reading abilities were predicted by both serial order STM and LTL performance. These results point toward a predictive role of serial order memory performance in reading acquisition and suggest that serial order STM and LTL support reading at different stages of acquisition. The effectiveness of the Multisensory Method on Early Reading Ability in 6-7 Years Old Children

Early reading is an important primary capital that students have in conducting their academic knowledge, but there are still many elementary school students who have not mastered the skills. Using the right reading method can support children's skills in reading. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the Multisensory method on the early reading skills in 6-7 years old children of the State Elementary School 10 Ganting Bigau and the State Elementary School 19 Koto Tuo, the Sulit Air Village, District X Koto diatas, the Regency of Solok. Withdrawal of samples with simple random sampling technique. Data collection is conducted by adapting instruments from ERSI (The Early Reading Screening Instrument). The data analysis technique is an independent T-test that is to see a comparison of differences in the average score. The results showed that the Multisensory method was effective in developing early reading skills in Grade 1 students at elementary school. The use of multisensory reading methods can be an alternative to the choice of reading by the teacher in improving the student's initial reading.

Phonology-based reading instruction to improve dyslexic students’ early reading ability

Dyslexic students struggle to learn how to read. Yet, few studies reported on how dyslexic students learn to read. In this respect, special education teachers have adopted a myriad of ways to overcome dyslexic students’ reading problems. To respond to this need, the purpose of this study is to examine how phonology-based reading instruction could help dyslexic students improve their early reading abilities. Grounded in a mixed methods research design, four dyslexic students of primary school were recruited to participate in this study. The results of the study showed that the phonology-based reading instruction had a positive impact on improving the dyslexic students’ early reading abilities, particularly in Bahasa Indonesian-medium reading texts. This suggests that phonology-based reading instruction could effectively be implemented if special education teachers could enact phonological instruction as a prerequisite for identifying the students’ early reading ability and phonics instruction as an instructional reinforcement for building students’ early reading repertoire.

PENGARUH PENERAPAN METODE VAKT (VISUAL, AUDITORY, KINESTHETIC, TACTILE) TERHADAP PENINGKATAN KEMAMPUAN MEMBACA PERMULAAN PADA SISWA KELAS I SEKOLAH DASAR

ABSTRACTReading is the basic capabilities that must be mastered in order to understand the knowledge. In reality, not all children have a good reading skills. To overcome this problem researcher choosed VAKT method. Researcher believed toward VAKT method effective to improve literacy ability on early elementary school students. This study aimed to determine how the influence of VAKT methods to improve reading ability at the beginning of first grade elementary school students. The subject on this study was the first grade elementary school students. The subject on this study consist of 5 students. Experimental design used in this study is quasi experiment. The data analysed by nonparametric (Wilcoxon). The results showed that VAKT method effective to improve reading skills at the beginning of the first grade students of elementary school. The result showed that (z = -2.023, p= 0,043 (p <0.050). This study concluded that there was a significant difference between the ability to read at the beginning of the first grade students of elementary school before and after treatment. The reading ability at the beginning of the first grade students after the treatment is better than before the treatment. Key words: Implementation VAKT Method, Early Reading Ability

Music instruction and reading performance: Conceptual transfer in learning and development

Background: This article reported on the developmental consequences of music instruction in Foundation Phase level of South African school context, specifically in relation to learners’ learning and acquisition of early reading abilities. Against the background of the recent upsurge in research interest on the subject of conceptual and skills transfer among primary school learners in South Africa, the article uses contemporary advances in theory to interrogate empirical research on the benefits of music instruction for successful acquisition of reading abilities. Aim: The study aimed to interrogate the question – and resuscitate debate about – how conceptual skills in one subject discipline could transfer to benefit the learning and development of related conceptual skills in a different but related subject discipline. Setting: The setting for the research was a boys-only public primary school located in a middle-class suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. Methods: Document analysis and observation of reading activities and the performance records of Foundation Phase learners was carried out by the first author, and the performance of a group that was part of the school’s music instruction programme was compared with that of a group that was not part of that programme. Results: The results suggested that participation in school music instruction might benefit primary school learners’ development of early reading abilities. Conclusion: This is especially so when instructional activities are purposefully structured to benefit cognate conceptual skills, with crucial implications for policy development and the organisation of subject matter content knowledge in primary schooling in contemporary South Africa.

Model Pendampingan Guru terhadap Kemampuan Membaca Anak (Studi Kasus di Raudlatul Athfal Manbaul Falah Sidorejo, Pamotan-Rembang)

<span><em>Young children need a variety of fun activities and in accordance with </em><span><em>the character development. Potential Capacity of reading early childhood is very </em><span><em>necessary to be developed through various activities are games and also contains </em><span><em>an element of learning. This paper aims to describe a model mentoring of teachers </em><span><em>to early childhood reading ability. The author argues the results of research on the </em><span><em>area of research in early childhood institutions TK / RA Manbaul Falah Sidorejo </em><span><em>Pamotan Rembang as a case study of early childhood learning activities in reading </em><span><em>membelajarkan activity on students. With descriptive method qualitative and </em><span><em>psychological approach, the study found some things that the underlying model </em><span><em>of early childhood assistance in developing reading skills, including writing and </em><span><em>arithmetic.
