Web site search engine optimization: a case study of Fragfornet

PurposeSearch Engine Optimization (SEO) is a set of techniques used by websites in order to be better indexed by search engines. This papers aims to focus upon “white hat”, “in page” SEO: techniques to improve one's site content, hereby making it more attractive to human visitors as well as search engines, by making changes within the site's pages while focusing on chosen themes and keywords. The final goal is for the site to be better ranked by one or several targeted search engines and therefore appearing higher in their results lists for specified requests. This paper seeks to describe the steps one must take to reach such a goal, while focusing on the example of the website Fragfornet.Design/methodology/approachFragfornet web pages have been generated through a “website factory” allowing the creation of dynamic websites on demand for the employees of Cemagref. This explains the steps to take to optimize for search engines any website using Zope Plone; even more broadly, the general recommendations described can be used by any website at all to gain more visibility on search engines. After a literature review about search engine optimization, the paper describes the methods used to optimize the website before exposing the results which were quickly obtained.FindingsIt was not long before the first effects of the SEO campaign were experienced. One week later, as soon as the Googlebots had crawled the site and stored a newer version of it within their databases, it immediately went up in the results pages for requests concerning forests fragmentation. This paper describes some of the parameters that were monitored and some of the conclusions drawn from them..Originality/valueThis paper's goal is to explain which steps to take for search engines to optimize any website elaborated through Cemagref website factory, or any website using Zope Plone. Even more broadly, the general recommendations described in this paper can be used by any librarian on any website to gain more visibility on search engines.

Research and Implementation of Self-Publishing Website Platforms for Universities Based on CMS

To update school websites, incorporating personality and ease of maintenance and management, the authors propose the use of a Content Management System (CMS). A CMS is a self-publishing Website platform for university information resources. The system has many features, such as self-service, fast station, self-service custom modules, dynamic replacement site style template, flexible adjustment of dynamic website contents and structures, search engine optimization (SEO) measures, and so forth. Each institution can customize according to their own information platform needs. A CMS greatly shortens the development cycle of the site and promotes the development of information technology on campus.

Development of a Website and Biobank Database for the Nanosized Cancer Polymarker Biochip Project: A Multicenter Italian Experience

The Nanosized Cancer Polymarker Biochip Project (RBLA03S4SP) funded by an Italian MIUR-FIRB grant (Italian Ministry of University and Research - Investment Funds for Basic Research) has led to the creation of a free-access dynamic website, available at the web address https://serviziweb.ulss12.ve.it/firbabo, and of a centralized database with password-restricted access. The project network is composed of 9 research units (RUs) and has been active since 2005. The aim of the FIRB project was the design, production and validation of optoelectronic and chemoelectronic biosensors for the simultaneous detection of a novel class of cancer biomarkers associated with immunoglobulins of the M class (IgM) for early diagnosis of cancer. Biomarker immune complexes (BM-ICs) were assessed on samples of clinical cases and matched controls for breast, colorectal, liver, ovarian and prostate malignancies. This article describes in detail the architecture of the project website, the central database application, and the biobank developed for the FIRB Nanosized Cancer Polymarker Biochip Project. The article also illustrates many unique aspects that should be considered when developing a database within a multidisciplinary scenario. The main deliverables of the project were numerous, including the development of an online database which archived 1400 case report forms (700 cases and 700 matched controls) and more than 2700 experimental results relative to the BM-ICs assayed. The database also allowed for the traceability and retrieval of 21,000 aliquots archived in the centralized bank and stored as backup in the RUs, and for the development of a centralized biological bank in the coordinating unit with 6300 aliquots of serum. The constitution of the website and biobank database enabled optimal coordination of the RUs involved, highlighting the importance of sharing samples and scientific data in a multicenter setting for the achievement of the project goals.

Pedagogical Practices to Support Classroom Cultures of Scientific Inquiry

This article examines the pedagogical practices of two science inquiry teachers and their students using a Web-based system called Web of Inquiry (WOI). There is a need to build a collective repertoire of pedagogical practices that can assist elementary and middle school teachers as they support students to develop a complex model of inquiry based on testing alternative hypotheses. A repertoire of effective instructional practices may help students learn the language of science, develop an understanding of scientific tools and representations, and take up a scientific worldview that emphasizes the generative, social nature of science (National Research Council [NRC], 2007). The Web of Inquiry (WOI) (http://www.webofinquiry.org) is a dynamic website where students carry out scientific inquiry projects to develop and test their theories; learn scientific language, tools, and practices of investigation; engage in self assessment; and provide feedback to peers. Two teachers and their classes participated in this study using a variety of science content. We examine and discuss the teachers’ use of instructional strategies to support students to develop a coherent and theoretically driven model of scientific inquiry using the WOI. Implications of this work are addressed with respect to student and teacher learning and preservice teacher education.

Design and Implementation of Conference Management System Based on ASP

With the rapid development of the Internet and information, communication technology, human society began to enter into the intelligence community with the digital and network platform. With the popularization of computer application in schools, enterprises and other institutions, the meetings of governments, enterprises and institutions has broken the traditional model that the meetings are held in the same place and at the same time, and network meetings is to be popularized with the increasingly fast paces. But regardless of the company or the university, there exists the problems of meeting management. Now the overwhelming majority of the conference management is still in a state of manual, inefficient and prone to error, not manageable, not rule out any untrue phenomenon. Therefore, the internal management, self-improvement of the meeting management can not be ignored. This paper aims to resolve this problem by designing a meeting management website. Conference Management website ASP can be used to design the conference management website, ASP (Active Server Pages) dynamic website is a technology which is introduced by Microsoft Company to replace CGI (Common Gateway Interface)-a common Gateway Interface. By combining the knowledge of ASP HTML language, ASP directives and ActiveX components and Access database, the paper uses the own Web server to create and run a dynamic interactive Website 。The paper aims to realize the work of meeting managing, application, auditing, controlling, minutes of meetings processing through the meeting management website.

Can internet users protect themselves? Challenges and techniques of automated protection of HTTP communication

HTTPS enables secure access to web content and web-based services. Although supported by many content and service providers, HTTPS is oftentimes not enabled by default, as pointed out in an open letter sent to Google by security experts. In this article, we discuss if and how web users can protect themselves by using HTTPS instead of HTTP. We show that many websites allow for accessing content by HTTPS instead of HTTP. However, HTTPS access must be manually configured or requested by the user, or is impossible at all, e.g., for embedded objects. For this reason, we explore how to protect users transparently by automatically using HTTPS whenever possible. In order to enable this approach, one needs to determine whether using HTTPS yields the same content as using HTTP, even in the presence of dynamic websites incorporating advertisements and news. We show that this decision is possible for entire websites like amazon.com in short time by combining a fast content comparison algorithm, result caching, and observations on the structure of the website. Besides the concrete HTTP use case considered in this article, our results are of independent interest for any setting in which content can be accessed by various means. Finally, we present and discuss different approaches for implementing automated protection of HTTP connections.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the needs and customer satisfaction in service advertising and design an attractive site customer satisfaction, user friendly and dynamic. Ways to do research using analytical method, data collection method, and design method. The collection of data and information were done through a field research. The results obtained from this research is the design of e-CRM applications (Electronic Customer Relationship Management) which aims to produce an interactive Internet-based applications for any strategy to enhance relationships with existing customers, increase new customers and increase profits from the sale. In addition, companies can thrive in providing quality service to our customers, which in turn can increase its profit. The conclusion of this research is to create a dynamic website, which is useful for providing better services to consumers, thus increasing profits for customers and companies.

Cluster-based Web Services using an Integrated Adaptive Management System

A cluster based web server is a web system architecture that consists of multiple server nodes distributed on a local area and is interconnected through a high speed network. The complexity of the cluster-based web service challenges the traditional approaches, which fail to guarantee the reliability and real-time performance required. In this paper, we present an Integrated Adaptive Management System (IAMS) for such service. The issues we discuss address to efficiently allocate resources and provide more effective QoS support under a wide range of load conditions. For the global resource level, we introduce spare instance and corresponding management strategy as a supplemental adaptive mechanism. The spare instances hosted on shared node afford better resource utilization and more effective QoS support in the case of overload or workload fluctuation. Further, it can relax the influence of the fault recovery from the hardware and software failure. For the local level, we apply a multipurpose linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) as basic adaptive element. The control scheme using reject time ratio as control input is able to provide guarantees for overload protection, resource control, Qos control, performance isolation, and effective management for spare instances. Although cluster-based web services have been widely deployed we have seen limited research in the literature on comprehensive adaptive mechanism for resource management with QoS support. For lack of detailed knowledge about the inner workings of the web service, we adopt system identification approach to establish the models. The open-loop service is modeled as a difference equation with unknown parameters. Then we stimulate the web service with pseudo-random signal as inputs and sample output data. After collecting the data, the least square estimation of model parameters can be solved via MATLAB. In this paper, we present an integrated adaptive management system (IAMS) for cluster-based web services. The main adaptive mechanisms in our system are: The resource adaptation based on the SLA event-driven mechanism. A supplemental adaptive mechanism based on spare instances and the corresponding strategy. A multi-purpose control scheme incorporated in the local manager and/or application is used as the basic adaptive element to provide guarantees for overload protection, resource control, Qos control, performance isolation and management for spare instances. We have presented rich experiments including overload protection, resource utility and QoS performance control both on static and dynamic website. The results illustrate our multi-purpose control scheme can offer effective QoS differential service and satisfied performance. Now the controller as the adaptive element only provides throughput different-tiation. It discusses the spare instance and its management. The multi-purpose feedback control scheme and the implementation of QoS differentiated service. It presents the experiment results on Tomcat and a 3-tiered web site to illustrate the efficiency of our control scheme respectively. Last Section summarizes our work and discusses the future work. Results of experiments on both static and dynamic web sites illustrate the efficiency and robustness of the multi-purpose LQR. The full text of the article is not available in the cache. Establishing a National Chronic Kidney Disease Surveillance System for the United States

Despite the recognized importance of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the United States currently lacks a comprehensive, systematic surveillance program that captures and tracks all aspects of CKD in the population. As part of its CKD Initiative, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded two teams to jointly initiate the development of a CKD surveillance system. Here, we describe the process and methods used to establish this national CDC CKD Surveillance System. The major CKD components covered include burden (incidence and prevalence), risk factors, awareness, health consequences, processes and quality of care, and health system capacity issues. Goals include regular reporting of the data collected, plus development of a dynamic project web site and periodic issuance of a CKD fact sheet. We anticipate that this system will provide an important foundation for widespread efforts toward primary prevention, earlier detection, and implementation of optimal disease management strategies, with resultant increased awareness of CKD, decreased rates of CKD progression, lowered mortality, and reduced resource utilization. Final success will be measured by usage, impact, and endorsement.

Overcoming the Fear Factor: Creating a Dynamic Web Site

In this information-rich age, agriculture-related information is abundant and updated quickly. Collaborations between agriculture specialists and information specialists are increasing. The question has become how can agricultural information be presented in a more collaborative and timely manner? This article documents the process that Kansas State Libraries (KSL) followed to build a dynamic Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC) website. It discusses how and why librarians collaborated with research and teaching faculty and other agriculture specialists, examines the pros and cons of building dynamic versus static websites, and documents the steps to create a basic dynamic website without extensive programming skills.

BioDiversifying the Curriculum

The conundrum of biodiversity is that there's so much of it, more species than a person can count, more interactions than a supercomputer could calculate. At the same time, this unknown quantity is getting smaller at an alarming rate. Biodiversity as a life sciences subject touches evolution, ecology, conservation biology, and environmental studies. The educational challenge is to infuse biodiversity into the curriculum while emphasizing the science and addressing common misconceptions and gaps in student knowledge about biodiversity. What is biodiversity? Why is biodiversity important? Where is biodiversity? How does it arise? In a previous review (Liu, 2005 ), I focused on websites that support the teaching of evolution. The websites featured in that review continue to be outstanding resources. In particular the Understanding Evolution website (http://evolution.berkeley.edu) of the Berkeley Museum of Paleontology is a dynamic website that addresses biodiversity in relation to evolution. For this review, I emphasize some of the products of evolution, systematics, communities of organisms, and the environment, rather than the underlying genetic mechanisms of evolution.

Framework and authoring tool for an extension of the UIML language

This paper presents a framework for the design of User Interfaces (UIs). By applying model transformations, the framework allows different UIs to be generated for different computing platforms. The tool presented in this work helps designers to build an abstract user interface which is later transformed into a concrete user interface by means of transformation techniques based on graph grammars. These techniques can be used to generate implementation code for several UI platforms including desktop applications, dynamic websites and mobile applications. The generated user interfaces are integrated with a multi-tier application by referencing external services and communicating with the application core over Web Service protocols. Our tool also allows the concrete interfaces to be enhanced before generating the final UI. The approach uses an adaptation of UIML (User Interface Markup Language). The adaptation focuses on defining a data model and a services model, and it also introduces a navigation model that allows data communication from one UI to another. The obtained UIs together with Web Services can conform complete applications instead of just being prototypes.

A scaffolded introduction to dynamic website development for female high school students

We describe work on developing workshop activities that are part of wConnect , a project that is building an online community of women in computer and information science. The workshops are designed by college women for high school girls, with hands-on construction of dynamic web sites. Because of limited workshop time, the activities use scaffolding to help girls achieve the in-tended learning objectives. In this paper we describe the design of the activities, their formative evaluation in a series of four work-shops, and how we are using these results in the larger project.

Recent Advances in Internet-Delivered, Evidence-Based Weight Control Programs for Adults

With the explosion of Internet accessibility, online delivery offers potential for significantly greater reach of evidence-based obesity treatment programs for adults. Online behavioral weight control has been shown to produce significant weight loss, with more recent programs demonstrating larger losses and general consumer satisfaction. A growing literature indicates several program parameters that may offer greatest engagement in online obesity interventions and better weight loss outcomes, including interactive, dynamic Web site features and synchronous counselor contact, although this research is in the early stages, and a clear picture of the essential components for the most effective online obesity program remains to be determined. Further research is required to enhance weight loss outcomes, determine cost-effectiveness of Internet-delivered programs, and identify the individuals most likely to benefit from treatment in this format.

GODIVA2: interactive visualization of environmental data on the Web

GODIVA2 is a dynamic website that provides visual access to several terabytes of physically distributed, four-dimensional environmental data. It allows users to explore large datasets interactively without the need to install new software or download and understand complex data. Through the use of open international standards, GODIVA2 maintains a high level of interoperability with third-party systems, allowing diverse datasets to be mutually compared. Scientists can use the system to search for features in large datasets and to diagnose the output from numerical simulations and data processing algorithms. Data providers around Europe have adopted GODIVA2 as an INSPIRE-compliant dynamic quick-view system for providing visual access to their data.

The 2008/2009 Editorial Board

This is the time of year when I suffer “scrambled brain.” There is so much to do before the start of the new academic year, and so little time. I begin a project and then get pulled in a different direction because suddenly something else seems more important and the deadline is right now . I’m sure you know the feeling. The juggling act becomes very complicated. Will the full complement of new physical therapist students show up on the first day? Will I find a better way to teach the neuroscience content this year? Will the grant that we are rewriting for an October 1 deadline get funded this year? Will the guest lecturers show up for their allotted time? Meanwhile, at home, tomatoes need to be picked and canned—but that's on hold because the corn just got ripe, and there is corn relish to make. Should we make peach jam, or freeze the peaches? Can I let the weeds crowd the beans and beets for another week? One enterprise that really produces “scrambled brain” is scholarly publishing. Changes in technology, the growing number of journals, and easier Web access to information/misinformation challenge us to figure out ways to keep PTJ 's content vital and compelling.
