Polyurethane Leather as a Suture Training Model.

In the suture training of medical students at Mahasarakham Hospital Medical Education Center, pig skin and butyl rubber were used, but both materials presented several problems. Pig skin was difficult to preserve, becoming waxy, easily rotten, and hard in texture while butyl rubber was hard and sticky causing difficulties in suture practice. This study aimed to create a new suture training model to replace the original models. A suture training pad was made by attaching polyurethane leather (PUL) to a sponge pad with fabric glue. Then the pad was attached to a wooden board using double-sided adhesive foam tape, completing the suture training model. The suture training model can be used for various surgical skills training for medical students, including incision, suturing, and knotting. The time taken to make a pad and a model was 7 and 10 minutes, respectively, and the cost of making one suturing model was 13.55 bahts (0.41 USD). The new suture training model of PUL is cost-effective, easy to self-assemble, and eliminates the need for complex production, making it a suitable replacement for the original models.

Flame Retarded Adhesive Tapes and Their Influence on the Fire Behavior of Bonded Parts

AbstractPressure-sensitive adhesive tapes are used in automotives, railway vehicles and construction, where flame retardancy is of major importance. This is why industrial applicants often buy, and industrial tape manufacturers often produce, flame-retardant adhesive tapes, advertised for their good flammability characteristics. Yet, how flame-retardant tapes influence the fire behavior of bonded materials is a rather open question. To investigate this issue, three different substrates were bonded, using eight double-sided adhesive tapes containing two different carriers and two different flame retardants. The bonded substrates were compared to their monolithic counterparts in terms of flammability, fire behavior and fire stability. The fire behavior of adhesive tape bonded materials differed significantly from the monolithic substrates. The usage of different adhesive tapes let to different burning behavior of the bonded materials mainly due to different carrier systems. In contrast, the implementation of flame retardant into the adhesive had rather minor or no effect on the burning behavior of the bonded substrates despite their positive effect on the flammability of the free-standing tape. The carrier changed the HRR curve in the cone calorimeter and was able to both, reduce and increase fire hazards. Using the carrier with the better fire performance can lower the fire growth rate by 20%, the peak of heat release rate by 27%, and the maximum average rate of heat emission by 30% in cone calorimeter tests. Overall, the fire behavior of bonded materials is a complex interaction between substrate, adhesive, and carrier, and depends on the fire scenario the materials are exposed to.

Use of Melinex film for flat embedding tissue sections in LR White.

Tissue slices can undergo distortions during processing into resin for light and electron microscopy as a result of differential shrinkage of the various tissue components, and this may necessitate removal of a considerable amount of material from the final resin-embedded tissue block to ensure production of complete sections of the sample. To mitigate this problem, a number of techniques have been devised that ensure the sample is held flat during the final curing/polymerisation of the resin. For embedding in acrylic resins, oxygen must be excluded as it inhibits polymerisation, and methods devised for epoxy resin embedding are generally unsuitable. The method describes the preparation and use of air-tight flat-embedding chambers prepared from Melinex film and provides an inexpensive, technically simpler, and versatile alternative to chambers formed from either Thermanox coverslips or Aclar films that have previously been advocated for such purposes. The method describes the preparation and use of embedding chambers made from Melinex film, glass slides and double-sided adhesive tape as a technically simpler, inexpensive and versatile alternative to both Thermanox coverslips and the Aclar film method.

Spatially resolved capacitance-based stress self-sensing in concrete

Spatially resolved capacitance-based stress self-sensing in unmodified concrete has been demonstrated. The spatial resolution is 45 mm in one dimension, which is in the direction of the capacitance measurement. Parallel coplanar component electrodes (aluminum, 5-mm wide), attached to the concrete using double-sided adhesive tape) separated by 45 mm are used to measure the in-plane capacitance in the direction perpendicular to the length of the electrodes. Combinations of component electrodes are electrically connected to form an electrode. The capacitance ranges from ∼200 pF to ∼750 pF. The greater is the number of component electrodes in an electrode, the higher is the capacitance. The compressive loading is applied at selected areas located between adjacent component electrodes. The stress (defined as load divided by the 300 ×300-mm2 concrete area) is up to 3000 Pa. The load decreases the capacitance monotonically and reversibly. The fractional decrease in capacitance ranges from ∼0.1 % to ∼0.5 %. More spatially concentrated loading, as for loading near the edges of the specimen, gives greater fractional decrease in capacitance. The capacitance decreases with increasing inter-electrode distance. Embedded steel rebars with a 20.0-mm concrete cover do not affect the capacitance or capacitance-based sensing.

Hybrid Double-Sided Tape with Asymmetrical Adhesion and Burst Pressure Tolerance for Abdominal Injury Treatment.

Patients with open abdominal (OA) wounds have a mortality risk of up to 30%, and the resulting disabilities would have profound effects on patients. Here, we present a novel double-sided adhesive tape developed for the management of OA wounds. The tape features an asymmetrical structure and employs an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) with asymmetric wettability as a scaffold. It is constructed by integrating a tissue-adhesive hydrogel composed of polydopamine (pDA), quaternary ammonium chitosan (QCS), and acrylic acid cross-linking onto the bottom side of the ADM. Following surface modification with pDA, the ADM would exhibit characteristics resistant to bacterial adhesion. Furthermore, the presence of a developed hydrogel ensures that the tape not only possesses tissue adhesiveness and noninvasive peelability but also effectively mitigates damage caused by oxidative stress. Besides, the ADM inherits the strength of the skin, imparting high burst pressure tolerance to the tape. Based on these remarkable attributes, we demonstrate that this double-sided (D-S) tape facilitates the repair of OA wounds, mitigates damage to exposed intestinal tubes, and reduces the risk of intestinal fistulae and complications. Additionally, the D-S tape is equally applicable to treating other abdominal injuries, such as gastric perforations. It effectively seals the perforation, promotes injury repair, and prevents the formation of postoperative adhesions. These notable features indicate that the presented double-sided tape holds significant potential value in the biomedical field.

Developing a novel strategy for fabricating matrix film to assess the distribution of potassium perfluorooctanic sulfonate by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging

Matrix deposition plays a critical role in image quality of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI). To improve the ionization efficiency and overcome the limitation of traditional matrix deposition methods in the face of difficult-to-sublimate or difficult-to-dissolve matrix, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) named COF-DhaTab was successfully synthesized and firstly used as matrix film. It was fabricated by imprinting of sieved COF-DhaTab powder on the surface of a double-sided adhesive tape. Outstanding reproducibility and uniformity of COF-DhaTab film were demonstrated by relative standard deviation (RSD) within 8.37% and 7.71% from dot-to-dot and plate-to-plate, respectively. With the introduction of double-sided adhesive tape, water contact angle (WCA) of COF-DhaTab film increased from 55° to 141°, resulting in significant suppression of analyte diffusion. Moreover, the intensity of potassium perfluorooctanic sulfonate (PFOS, C8F17SO3−, m/z 498.93) was 9.3 × 105, more than six hundred times higher than that using DHB matrix. This enhancement was attributed to the rough surface and multiple branches of the synthesized COF-DhaTab. To verify the ability of COF-DhaTab film as substrate, the spatial distribution of PFOS in zebrafish, rat liver and kidney tissues was explored. Superior imaging capability was displayed with high-spatial resolution and reliable location distribution. These results not only demonstrate the outstanding ability of COF-DhaTab as matrix for MALDI-MS and MALDI-MSI, but also provide a facile approach for fabrication of novel matrix films for MALDI-MSI.

Inductance-based and inductance-capacitance-based structural self-sensing of shape-changing deformation in aluminum

Structural self-sensing refers to a structural material sensing itself without sensor incorporation. Resistance-based self-sensing has long been studied. This work addresses inductance-based self-sensing and inductance-capacitance-based self-sensing. In particular, it provides the first report of inductance-capacitance-based self-sensing. A change in the inductance causes a change in the capacitance. This is to be distinguished from the capacitance change resulting from permittivity change. Permanent mechanical deformation with shape change (such as that associated with bending or undulation, as opposed to tensile strain) increases the inductance, in accordance with Faraday’s Law, thus decreasing the capacitance, as shown in this work for aluminum subjected to undulating bending. Conductivity is required for the inductance. The inductance capacitance is measured with the presence of a dielectric film (a double-sided adhesive tape) between the specimen and the aluminum foil electrode, as needed because an LCR meter is not designed for measuring the capacitance of a conductor. The specimen is subjected to undulating bending for different numbers of bends and different radii of curvature. The inductance and resistivity, as measured by direct clipping without the dielectric film, increase monotonically with the number of bends, while the inductance capacitance decreases monotonically. For radius of curvature 12.24 mm and 7.00 mm, the highest fractional increase in inductance (52% and 110%, respectively) is greater than the highest fractional increase in resistivity (2.2% and 7.3%, respectively) and the highest fractional decrease in inductance capacitance (2.04% and 2.4%, respectively). The sensing is superior for a smaller radius of curvature, whether the sensing is by measuring the inductance, resistance or capacitance. The inductance is superior to the resistivity or inductance capacitance for sensing bending.

Paracetamol tablet was analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Sample was fixed to a stainless-steel sample holder with a copper double-sided adhesive tape. Survey spectra, C 1s, O 1s, N 1s, Si 2p, Mg 2s, Mg KLL, and Mg 1s core levels spectra were acquired. Results showed the presence of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, elements that constitute the chemical structure of paracetamol; however, these can also be part of the excipients. In addition, silicon and magnesium were detected, which are related to excipients.

Crevice corrosion behavior and mechanism of laser additive manufacturing nickel-based alloy under wedge-shaped crevice by using wire beam electrode

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the crevice corrosion behavior and mechanism of laser additive manufacturing (LAM) nickel-based alloy under wedge-shaped crevice.Design/methodology/approachFirst, the opening size of the wedge-shaped crevice was designed to 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 mm by controlling the thickness of silicon rubber and the double-side adhesive tape. Then, one side of the glass sheet was stuck on the silicon strip and keep the electrodes of Rows 1 and 2 outside the crevice as a reference, and the opposite side was stuck to the wire beam electrode by silica gel.FindingsThe current density with a maximum value of 5.7 × 10−6 A/cm2 was observed at the crevice opening of 0.5 mm, while the lowest value of 9.2 × 10−7 A/cm2 was found at the crevice opening of 0.1 mm. In addition, the corrosion resistance at the inside of the crevice is higher than that at the outside and the middle of the crevice. It means that the internal width of the wedge-shaped crevice tends toward 0, which hinders the migration of ions in the corrosive medium. The generation of corrosive products further reduce the crevice size to cause the inhibition of corrosion at the inside of the crevice as well.Originality/valueThe multilayer and multipath LAM component is prepared to show the complex microstructure, which made the corrosion behavior and mechanism at wedge-shaped crevice nondeterminacy.

Mixed-mode cationic exchange sorptive tapes combined with direct infusion mass spectrometry for determining opioids in saliva samples

This article describes the synthesis of mixed-mode cationic exchange (MCX) tapes as sorptive phases in bioanalysis, and it faces the determination of methadone and tramadol in saliva as the model analytical problem. The tapes are synthesized using aluminum foil as substrate, which is subsequently covered with double-sided adhesive tape where the MCX particles (ca. 1.4 ± 0.2 mg) finally adhere. MCX particles allow the extraction of the analytes at the physiological pH, where both drugs are positively charged, minimizing the potential co-extraction of endogenous matrix compounds. The extraction conditions were studied considering the main variables (e.g. ionic strength, extraction time, sample dilution). Under the optimum conditions and using direct infusion mass spectrometry as the instrumental technique, detection limits as low as 3.3 μg·L-1 were obtained. The precision calculated at three different levels, and expressed as relative standard deviation, was better than 3.8%. The accuracy, expressed as relative recoveries, ranged from 83 to 113%. The method was finally applied to determine tramadol in saliva samples from patients under medical treatment. This approach opens the door to easily preparing sorptive tapes based on commercial (or ad-hoc synthesized) sorbent particles.

Craft-and-Stick Xurographic Manufacturing of Integrated Microfluidic Electrochemical Sensing Platform

An innovative modular approach for facile design and construction of flexible microfluidic biosensor platforms based on a dry manufacturing "craft-and-stick" approach is developed. The design and fabrication of the flexible graphene paper electrode (GPE) unit and polyethylene tetraphthalate sheet (PET)6/adhesive fluidic unit are completed by an economic and generic xurographic craft approach. The GPE widths and the microfluidic channels can be constructed down to 300 μm and 200 μm, respectively. Both units were assembled by simple double-sided adhesive tapes into a microfluidic integrated GPE (MF-iGPE) that are flexible, thin (<0.5 mm), and lightweight (0.4 g). We further functionalized the iGPE with Prussian blue and glucose oxidase for the fabrication of MF-iGPE glucose biosensors. With a closed-channel PET fluidic pattern, the MF-iGPE glucose biosensors were packaged and sealed to protect the integrated device from moisture for storage and could easily open with scissors for sample loading. Our glucose biosensors showed 2 linear dynamic regions of 0.05-1.0 and 1.0-5.5 mmol L-1 glucose. The MF-iGPE showed good reproducibility for glucose detection (RSD < 6.1%, n = 6) and required only 10 μL of the analyte. This modular craft-and-stick manufacturing approach could potentially further develop along the concept of paper-crafted model assembly kits suitable for low-resource laboratories or classroom settings.

The results showed the presence of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, elements that constitute the Dipyrone/Metamizole molecule; however, carbon and oxygen are also found in the excipients (other ingredients). In addition, sodium was detected, which is associated with excipients.
