Regional Disparities, Spatial Effects, and the Dynamic Evolution of Distorted Energy Prices in China

The distortion of energy prices has become an important obstacle to the high-quality development of China’s economy. Moreover, energy price distortions are not merely a domestic issue. They may trigger carbon leakage by diverting emissions-intensive production to countries with cheaper energy. Although the existing literature has extensively examined the effects of energy price distortions, two significant research gaps remain. First, most studies treat energy price distortions merely as an influencing factor, lacking a systematic analysis that places it at the core. Second, the spatial correlation characteristics of energy price distortions are often overlooked. This study measures the degree of energy price distortions across Chinese provinces from 2000 to 2022 and employs methods such as the Global Moran’s I, Local Moran’s I, and kernel density estimation to systematically analyze the spatial correlation, spatial distribution of coordination indices, and dynamic evolution patterns of these distortions. The results reveal that: (1) the overall degree of energy price distortions in China exhibited a trend of rising first and then declining, with significant regional disparities; (2) the regional gap followed an “expansion-contraction” trajectory; (3) there is notable spatial autocorrelation, with high-distortion areas concentrated in Northeast China, the middle reaches of the Yellow River, and Northwest China; and (4) the dynamic evolution suggests that distortion levels in high- and medium-value regions may continue to decline, while those in low-value regions may increase. This study fills a critical gap in the systematic spatial analysis of energy price distortions and provides new empirical evidence and policy insights for advancing market-oriented reforms in energy markets.

Türkiye’s Pivot to the East: Motivations and Key Challenges for Possible BRICS Membership

Türkiye's growing interest in BRICS highlights its eastward shifting foreign policy strategy of diversifying alliances in response to changing global power dynamics, a complex regional landscape and a challenging domestic political environment. This shift can be understood through the lens of strategic pragmatism, which remarks how Türkiye’s international alignments are shaped by domestic economic vulnerabilities and flexible, interest-based political calculations. In this regard, this article particularly focuses on economic motivations behind this interest. Türkiye's aspiration for BRICS membership is based on motives to establish alternative financial partnerships and to get support in dealing with its escalating domestic economic issues. These economic concerns are intertwined with the government's political ambitions to enhance the country's global standing and lessen reliance on Western institutions. Therefore, the article analyses the evolution of Türkiye's foreign policy over the decade and examines the appeal of BRICS as a strategy to provide pluralism for economic recovery and leverage for political power both internally and externally. Finally, it points out the challenges Türkiye may face on this path. These include structural issues, trade imbalances, and likely reactions from its Western allies due to its increased participation in non-Western power blocs.

ADVANCES IN TREATING DEPRESSION

It is normal to feel temporarily depressed when facing situations such as the loss of someone close, or experiencing serious financial or domestic issues; however, when these depressed feelings intensify and last much longer, it could be due to clinical depression. Around the world, millions of people are affected by depression as their daily routine is interrupted by lingering sadness and the feeling of pain. Although effective treatments are available to control and treat depression symptoms, the social stigma associated with mental illness in many societies prevents people from seeking help. Statistics show that different types of depression, due to co-occurrence with other medical conditions, social, psychological, biological factors or drugs that can cause or have a side effect, affect around 322 million people around the world. This review provides a comprehensive coverage of advances in treating different types of depression, pharmacological approaches, potential new drugs, use of natural antidepressants, treatment without any medications, recent developments in Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD) and Major Depression Disorder (MDD) involving innovative medications, as well as magnetic and electrical stimulation techniques.

PUTUS PERKAWINAN KARENA LI’AN DAN AKIBAT HUKUMNYA TERHADAP HARTA PERSPEKTIF HUKUM ISLAM DI INDONESIA

Marriage is a sacred bond aimed at forming a harmonious, loving, and compassionate family. However, in practice, various domestic issues may lead to divorce, one of which is through the li’an process. Li’an occurs when a husband accuses his wife of adultery without presenting four witnesses, and the wife denies the accusation by taking an oath before a judge. This process results in the permanent dissolution of the marriage and carries legal consequences, including the status of children and the division of marital property. This study employs a library research method by examining Islamic legal literature and relevant Indonesian regulations. The findings indicate that although Islamic law does not explicitly regulate the division of assets after li’an, resolution can be pursued through as-shulhu (amicable settlement) based on mutual agreement between both parties. If no agreement is reached, the matter may be resolved through the court while still adhering to the principles of Sharia.

Tracing the Discourse on Overtourism

Abstract This study analyzes the discourse surrounding overtourism by synthesizing academic perspectives and media representations, highlighting the dynamics and diverse effects of this modern phenomenon. This study aims to critically analyze the evolution of overtourism as an interdisciplinary topic, examining its ecological, socio-cultural, and economic implications. The methodology comprises two analyses: a comparative computational media analysis using Media Cloud to investigate overtourism coverage in major global tourism destinations and a bibliometric analysis conducted with VOSviewer to assess scholarly outputs obtained from Scopus. The comparative media analysis from 2020 to 2024 reveals varying national perspectives on overtourism, highlighting ethical concerns in German and Swiss media in contrast to sensationalist and conflict-oriented representations in Spanish and French outlets. Japanese coverage prioritizes domestic issues, whereas British reports highlight international viewpoints. The bibliometric analysis from 2013 to 2024 reveals a rise in scholarly attention before the pandemic, followed by stabilization in the post-pandemic period. Key thematic clusters encompass strategic management, heritage conservation, environmental sustainability, urban transformation, social impacts, and post-pandemic tourism dynamics. The academic discourse emphasizes the impact of overtourism on ecological degradation, community tensions, cultural commodification, and economic disparities, underscoring the need for integrated governance and community involvement in effective tourism management. The findings indicate that overtourism has significant negative effects, including the exacerbation of socioeconomic inequalities, ecological stress, and cultural degradation. Additionally, tourismophobia is rising, leading to conflicts. Furthermore, they underscore the role of grassroots movements in promoting sustainable and equitable tourism practices. The study concludes by advocating for comprehensive governance frameworks, community-oriented solutions, and interdisciplinary research to promote sustainable and resilient tourism.

A Light in the ‘Darkness’: Efforts of Chinese Print Media in Rebuilding Sino-Arab Connectivity During the Early Twentieth Century

The Silk Road, which connected China to the Arab world, flourished for centuries as a vital trade channel. However, with the rise of colonial powers, this once-thriving link began to decline. By the early twentieth century, a collapse in Sino-Arab people-to-people exchange and a near-total absence of access to information about each other had occurred. Both civilizations – crushed under the weight of colonialism and imperialism – found themselves geographically isolated from each other as never before. Nevertheless, this period also witnessed a boom of print media in China – including newspapers, journals, and magazines – that addressed a broad range of domestic and global issues. Drawing upon primary Chinese sources – including news reports, editorials, and commentaries – this article examines how Chinese print media in the early twentieth century depicted the Arab world and its anti-colonial struggles. It adopts a theoretical focus on how an anti-imperialist discourse guided these portrayals, with Chinese media elites employing the ‘Theory of Similar National Fate’ as their narrative. This article concludes that although the Silk Road faded, the emergence of print media in China brought a glimmer of hope amid the perceived ‘darkness’ in Sino-Arab relations, enabling the initial reconstruction of a spiritual connectivity between the two civilizations.

Evaluative Language in U.S. Presidential Media Coverage: An Appraisal Analysis and Its Pedagogical Implications for ELT

Background and Aim: This study explores how two major U.S. newspapers, The Washington Post and The New York Times, utilized evaluative language to assess U.S. presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump during the 2024 election campaign. Addressing a gap in media bias research within political discourse through the use of appraisal analysis, the study focuses on the judgment of social esteem and social sanction, which investigate how the candidates were portrayed, contributing to discussions on media portrayals that shape public perception. Materials and Methods: Appraisal theory was applied to analyze 35 selected articles from both online newspapers in a span of six months from January to June 2024, specifically examining evaluative language related to social esteem and social sanction. This qualitative study aimed to identify patterns in how each candidate was represented, particularly regarding their leadership, policies, and personal attributes. Results: The findings indicate that both newspapers generally portrayed Biden positively in terms of social esteem, emphasizing his leadership experience, especially in foreign policy. However, as the campaign progressed, negative judgments related to social sanction surfaced, particularly critiquing Biden's age and his handling of domestic issues like immigration. Trump, on the other hand, was portrayed negatively in both newspapers, with an emphasis on social sanction due to his rhetoric and behavior on immigration. Despite this, The Washington Post occasionally acknowledged Trump’s resilience, offering him positive evaluations in terms of social esteem. Conclusion: The study contributes to the field of discourse analysis and provides practical implications for English Language Teaching (ELT), highlighting the importance of media critical literacy. Integrating appraisal theory in ELT classrooms can enhance students' analytical skills and awareness of media framing, encouraging a deeper understanding of evaluative language in political discourse.

Macroeconomic variables and financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya

Kenya's banking sector demonstrated resilience in 2021, with capital adequacy ratios over 14.5% and liquidity ratios above 20%. Despite a slight decline in food inflation and deposit rates, banks maintained stable performance, achieving a return on assets of about 1.5%. In this study, macroeconomic factors were examined to determine how they affect Kenyan commercial banks' financial performance, which facilitate international money transfers and connect savers with borrowers and are critical for economic growth. However, the sector faces significant financial challenges that have adversely affected the country's overall economic performance, worsened by global and domestic financial issues. Using firm size as a moderator, this study examined the impact of key macroeconomic factors such as inflation, interest rates, money supply, and currency exchange rates on commercial banks' financial performance in Kenya. Theories of interest, balance of payments, classical interest, deflation, organization, and quantity theory of money informed the research. An explanatory research design was adopted, focusing on all 42 commercial banks operating in Kenya. A comprehensive survey was conducted across these banks, utilizing existing data sourced from official audited financial statements over the past six fiscal years, from 2018 to 2023. Statistical measures such as mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression and correlation analysis were assessed by using descriptive statistics. Diagnostic statistics, including autocorrelation, homoscedasticity, multicollinearity, and normality tests were also employed. Ethical considerations were upheld by obtaining informed consent from all participants and properly referencing all materials and sources used. The study revealed that inflation, exchange rate, interest rate and money supply had a positive and significant effect on the financial performance of commercial banks in Kenya. The research finds that inflation generally results in elevated interest rates as central banks strive to manage rising prices, leading to greater interest earnings from loans due to their ability to impose higher rates. Commercial banks frequently participate in foreign currency dealings, encompassing loans, deposits, and trading activities. The research suggests that commercial banks ought to adopt several strategies like modifying interest rates for sustained profitability, diversifying investment portfolios to reduce risks, and prioritizing cost management to enhance operational efficiency.

An Analysis of the Evolution and Influence of Japans Cool Japan Strategy on National Image and Soft Power

The Cool Japan strategy, integral to Japans post-war cultural diplomacy, has significantly reshaped its international image and enhanced soft power. This study examines the strategys evolution and its role in transforming Japans global perception from a militaristic past to a modern, innovative, and culturally rich nation, while also driving economic growth through cultural exports. By integrating anime, cuisine, fashion, and technology into its national brand, Japan has developed a diverse identity that resonates globally. Empirical data, including European surveys and industry statistics, highlight the strategys effectiveness: 93% of respondents acknowledge Japans cultural richness, while the anime industry recorded revenues of 33.5 trillion yen in 2023, boosting tourism and cross-cultural engagement. The analysis further examines Japans leadership in international frameworks such as the CPTPP and initiatives like Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT), highlighting its role as a mediator in addressing global challenges. However, critiques of cultural exoticization, particularly concerning the 2021 Tokyo Olympics cultural representations, expose tensions between globalization and cultural authenticity. The study concludes that while the Cool Japan strategy effectively harnesses cultural resources to enhance soft power, future success will depend on balancing promoting popular culture and integrating traditional heritage, fostering bidirectional cultural exchanges, and addressing domestic social issues within Japans global narrative.

Issue Salience in the European Parliament Election: An Analysis of Economic, Environmental and Immigration Issues on Social Media

Abstract This study investigates under what conditions Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) emphasised relevant policy issues—economy, climate/environment and immigration—during the 2019 European Parliament election campaign. Building on research on issue salience in EP elections and based on the content published on X/Twitter by MEPs in the weeks preceding the election, the study identifies key drivers of issue attention. It shows that issue relevance in the domestic public agenda and individual issue expertise increase MEPs' attention to the three policy issues, whereas parties' stance on the sociocultural dimension only affects attention to climate/environment. The study contributes to research on issue salience in EP election campaigns and MEPs' communication on social media, highlighting the importance of adopting a cross‐issue approach when studying European elections.

Exploring Early Marriage in Mogadishu: A Qualitative Study on the Causes, Current Situation, and Socioeconomic Impact of Early Marriage

Early Marriage is a pervasive issue in Mogadishu, Somalia, with significant socioeconomic consequences. This qualitative study explores the causes, current status, and socioeconomic consequences of early Marriage in the city. The research employed in- depth interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis to gather data from key stakeholders, including young brides, parents, community leaders, and experts. The findings reveal several interconnected factors contributing to the prevalence of early Marriage in Mogadishu. These include cultural norms and traditions, poverty, a lack of educational opportunities for girls, and insecurity due to ongoing conflicts. Early Marriage disrupts the lives of young girls, often resulting in limited educational attainment, restricted social mobility, and increased vulnerability to domestic violence and health issues.

Formation of the enterprise's production cost management system

Cost management is a key component of a company's management system. In today's high-risk environment, many domestic companies face issues related to inaccurate cost accounting and inefficient use of financial resources. The purpose of this study is to explore relevant tools for accounting and analytical cost management at the enterprise. To achieve this goal, an overview of the main measures for effective cost management is proposed, along with a step-by-step identification of the company's needs and the selection of the most efficient tools for cost optimization and control. The article examines a key aspect of enterprise management – the development of an accounting and analytical system for effective cost management. The study explores tools that facilitate the implementation of such a cost management system, identifies various methods for optimizing production costs, and substantiates the importance of accounting and analysis systems for effective cost management. It is proven that one of the main tasks of a cost management strategy in production is optimizing its structure, which can lead to significant cost savings, increased profitability, and improved production efficiency while maintaining product quality. To achieve this goal, the article recommends applying the proposed methods for optimizing production costs. A set of recommendations is proposed for the development and implementation of an effective accounting and analytical system for managing operational costs. These recommendations will help properly prepare and establish such a system, ultimately reducing overall enterprise costs, increasing production efficiency, and identifying non-productive expenses, thereby enhancing the value of production costs. The study proves that developing a cost accounting and analysis system is a crucial task for every enterprise in Ukraine, especially under conditions of market uncertainty and instability. Such a system ensures production stability and overall business resilience while enabling the formation of a more flexible and crisis-adaptive cost management strategy. It contributes to enhancing the company’s competitiveness and securing its stability in the market. This article serves as a valuable resource for business executives, accounting specialists, and cost management professionals seeking to improve production efficiency and implement modern accounting and analytical systems for strategic production cost management.

Abolitionist parallels: International law and domestic servitude in South China (1900–1940)

Abstract This article examines the intertwined processes between China’s making of anti-slavery laws and the evolution of international legislation against slavery in the early twentieth century. By tracing international interventions into domestic servitude issues in Chinese communities both in China and Southeast Asia, the article analyses how the international legal regime was absorbed into the domestic laws of late Qing and Republican China. Drawing on two threads of scholarly discussion—namely, the histories of humanitarian internationalism and modern China’s legal reform—this article argues that late Qing and Republican jurists intentionally maintained an ambiguous definition of domestic servitude. This ambiguity served to affirm the humanitarian governance of the modern state while simultaneously preserving social customs, in defiance of international law.

The Fluidity of Geopolitical Tension in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa region is geopolitically distinct and indispensable because of its geostrategic position linking Asia with Europe through Red Sea, Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea. This has made the region attractive to what some geopolitical analysts have termed in their jargon: extra-continental powers since time immemorial. This article seeks to provide in-depth analyses on the geopolitical tension in the region covering the entire Greater Horn of Africa including Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan as things stand now. The complexity and fluidity of the prevailing geopolitical tensions, fragility of the states, void of preventive diplomacy, unresolved internal conflicts, simmering border disputes, contested sovereignties and extra-continental geopolitical competition in the Horn of Africa are succinctly unpacked to expose the looming disasters as things stand currently. Those peculiarities’, contrasts, comparisons and generalities on peace, security and simmering conflicts in African are made to highlight the current state of peace and security in the continent, the region and beyond. Scientifically, the Horn of Africa Region cannot be discussed in isolation as the fluidity of the current geopolitical tension is continental, trans -regional and global. Extra-continental factors are also analyzed because they are the biggest part of the geopolitical tension in the Horn of Africa. Each aggravating factors of this loud and perilous geopolitical tension is analyzed in depth and at length to expose the danger it poses to the population of 300 million people in the region. In those substantive subtopic Domestic issues such as civil wars and contested sovereignties are also covered., regional, continental and the extra-continental issues pertinent to the fluidity of the prevailing geopolitical tension in the Horn of Africa are also analyzed.

ANALYZING THE GEOECONOMIC AND GEOSTRATEGIC POSITION OF COLOMBIA IN THE GEOPOLITICAL EQUATIONS OF THE LATIN AMERICAN REGION

Colombia, as one of the strategic countries in Latin America, holds a significant position in the region’s geoeconomic and geopolitical equations. Due to its unique geographical location, rich natural resources, access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and membership in regional and international organizations such as the Pacific Alliance and the Organization of American States, Colombia plays a vital role in shaping regional economic policies and trends. This article aims to examine Colombia’s geoeconomic position within the geopolitical equations of Latin America and assess how this position contributes to the country's regional and global influence. An analysis of Colombia’s economic and geopolitical policies shows that the country aims to strengthen its regional influence by developing transportation infrastructure, regional ports, and railways, and participating in multilateral initiatives such as trade and economic agreements. Colombia’s membership in the Pacific Alliance and its extensive economic interactions with Latin American countries provide valuable opportunities for the nation to enhance its geoeconomic standing and influence regional geopolitical equations. However, challenges such as internal insecurity, the influence of drug cartels, administrative corruption, and socio-economic inequalities remain significant barriers to Colombia’s efforts to stabilize its position in regional geoeconomic and geopolitical equations. Alongside these domestic issues, the competition between global powers such as the United States and China in Latin America also plays a crucial role in determining Colombia’s position. The United States, as Colombia’s strategic partner, holds substantial influence over the country’s policies and economy, while China is increasingly seeking to expand its influence in the region through economic investments and infrastructure projects. The findings of this study indicate that Colombia is pursuing geoeconomy-based economic policies to balance its geopolitical relations and increase its regional and international power. The development of trade corridors and economic infrastructure, the strengthening of regional economic ties, and the utilization of natural resources are among Colombia’s key strategies to solidify its geoeconomic position in the region. In this context, Colombia strives to overcome internal challenges and leverage regional geopolitical opportunities to become a key player in Latin America’s geopolitical and geoeconomic equations.

User features and gendered patterns in repeat online advice-seeking behavior

There is limited understanding of the user-level variables related to thecommon activity of repeat advice-seeking on virtual communities. Genderis of particular interest; past studies indicate men participate less on supportforums. Social role theory provides descriptions of the interplay betweengender roles and help-seeking, but these have not been quantified in an onlinecontext. We conduct a computational linguistic analysis on a year-longdataset of 17896 users on Reddit’s r/relationships, comparing thedemographics, linguistic choices, and user histories of repeat and nonrepeat advice-seekers self-identifying as male or female. We find strongevidence of gendered behavior, with users largely behaving more similarlyto their identified gender. Female users are more likely to be repeat adviceseekers and to engage in advice-giving alongside their future adviceseeking attempts. There are otherwise no significant differences between the proportions of male and female users who return solely to seek advice.Female users are also more likely to write longer and more informally,seeking advice on domestic issues and communication. Male users are morefocused on dating and past partners. Our findings shed light on thecharacteristics of a possibly vulnerable user population and set thefoundation for future investigations on the influence of offline social roleson online help-seeking.

Art, pain and immortality: Gendered creativity in Felicia Dorothea Hemans’s sentimental poetry

This paper examines Felicia Dorothea Hemans’s (1793-1835) poetry in relation to pain, female poetic creativity, and literary immortality. Hemans is a prominent figure in the sentimental tradition of English writing, as she is recognised for her unique capacity to integrate personal emotions with domestic concerns, thereby frequently questioning traditional gender roles in poetry. Hemans establishes a unique literary tradition that addresses domestic, national, and political issues by emphasising personal emotions. Despite the constraints imposed on women, Hemans always maintains her feminine identity in her poetry. She welcomes it as a major influence on her creative process. In this light, this paper closely explores the ways Felicia Dorothea Hemans reveals the immortalizing power of works in her two poems “Properzia Rossi” and “The Grave of a Poetess”, published in her collection Records of Women (1828), while also giving their articulation of the individual pain of the female poet either as a lover or as a poet. By exploring how Hemans skilfully transforms personal sorrow into a lasting creative legacy by highlighting the junction of these two elements, Hemans’s works indicate the ability of art to immortalize and preserve the feminine experience, even in the face of pain.
