Early Diagnosis of Tumorigenesis via Ratiometric Carbon Dots with Deep-Red Emissive Fluorescence Based on NAD+ Dependence.

The early diagnosis of tumorigenesis is crucial for clinical treatment, but the resolution and sensitivity of conventional short-wavelength biomarkers are not ideal because of the complicated interference in living tissue. Herein, a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-responsive probe with deep-red emissive ratiometric fluorescence was synthetized as a promising target for energy metabolism patterns during tumorigenesis. Interestingly, the solvents H3PO4 and 2,2'-dithiodibenzoic acid enhanced the red emission (640 and 680 nm) of o-phenylenediamine-based carbon dots (CDs), leading to the formation of a nanoscale graphite-like skeleton covered with -P=O, -CONH-, -COOH and -NH2 on their surfaces. Meanwhile, this method exhibited high sensitivity to the discriminating target NAD+, with a detection limit of 63 μM due to the inner filter effect and fluorescence resonance energy transfer process between NAD+ and CDs, which is superior to the reported capillary electrophoresis and liquid chromatographic detection methods (the reported detection limit was about 0.2 mM) in complex biological samples and even cancer cells. Encouragingly, NAD+ significantly promoted nucleus-targeting fluorescence and cell migration compared to GSH and pH stimulation, which were gradually eliminated in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells after 2-deoxy-d-Glucose inhibited the glycolytic phenotype. The proposed method holds great potential for the temporal and spatial resolution of NAD+-dependent tumor diagnosis in complex living systems.

Single Crystal to Single Crystal Transformation of Porous Materials Based on Zinc Nodes and Mercaptobenzoic Acid.

Porous coordination polymers (PCPs) are an excellent class of porous crystalline materials with tunable properties and intriguing potential applications spanning multiple disciplines. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a PCP (HI-103) based on 4,4'-dithiodibenzoic acid ligand and zinc nitrate with two DMF molecules residing in the porous network. The stability of the porous network was analyzed by heating the compound at 60.0 °C for two days, and the structural analysis revealed a new PCP (HI-104) was formed with one of the DMF molecules, indicating a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) transformation. The solvent molecules were completely removed by extensive drying (HI-103-dry), and the integrity of the porous network was verified by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis. The reversibility of SCSC transformation was confirmed by treating HI-103-dry with DMF molecules, resulting in HI-103 after five days. The adsorption studies of HI-103-dry with other solvents revealed that SCSC transformation was not observed for DMA and DEA, but some structural changes were observed in the presence of DMSO. The adsorption studies performed in the presence of an equimolar mixture of DMF, DMA, and DMA indicated that HI-103-dry could selectively adsorb DMF molecules from the analogous mixture.

Exchangeable disulfide bond containing highly flexible epoxy vitrimers with shape‐memory, self‐healing, and UV shielding attributes

AbstractWith the rise in momentous resource wastage and severe environmental pollution, a viable path for sustainability is through the use of reprocessable and recyclable materials like vitrimers. Herein, we demonstrated the synthesis of dynamic disulfide‐containing epoxy resin by condensing an amide derivative of 2,2′‐dithiodibenzoic acid with epichlorohydrin. The aforementioned epoxy resin was cured utilizing the two bio‐based curing agents poly(amido amine) and cystamine to produce three distinct epoxy vitrimers. The use of reactive diluent reduced the generation of volatile organic compounds during the curing process. The existence of disulfide bond and aliphatic moiety in the epoxy vitrimers established high elongation at break with good tensile strength. Owing to the dynamic bond, the vitrimers exhibited self‐healing properties with a healing efficiency of 71.48% along with good shape memory abilities. Additionally, the disulfide bond dynamic exchange reaction allowed the polymer chain architecture to topologically reorganize, making them reprocessable and degradable. Moreover, these epoxy vitrimers have the ability to shield ultraviolet radiation as well as inhibits oxidation, and have good chemical resistance properties. The investigated epoxy thermoset thus provides a lot of potential for application as a durable thin film material.

Hydrophobic Mn-Doped Solid-State Red-Emitting Carbon Nanodots with AIE Effect and Their Hydrogel Composites for Color-Changing Anticounterfeiting.

The aggregation-caused quenching has always limited the high concentration and solid-state applications of carbon nanodots. While the aggregation-induced emission effect, dominated by intramolecular motion, may be an effective means to solve this problem. Here, hydrophobic solid-state red-light carbon nanodots (M-CDs) with 95% yield are synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using 2,2'-dithiodibenzoic acid as the carbon source and manganese acetate as the dopant source. The disulfide bond of 2,2'-dithiodibenzoic acid serves as the symmetry center of molecular rotation and Mn catalyzes the synthesis of M-CDs, which promotes the formation of the central graphitic carbon structure. The M-CDs/agar hydrogel composites can achieve fluorescence transition behavior because of the special fluorescence transition properties of M-CDs. When this composite hydrogel is placed in water, water molecules contact with M-CDs through the network structure of the hydrogels, making the aggregated hydrogels of M-CDs fluorescence orange-red under 365nm excitation. While in dimethyl sulfoxide, water molecules in the hydrogels network are replaced and the M-CDs fluoresce blue when dispersed, providing a potential application in information encryption. In addition, high-performance monochromatic light-emitting diode (LED) devices are prepared by compounding M-CDs with epoxy resin and coating them on 365nm LED chips.

Functional Epoxy Elastomer Integrating Self-Healing Capability and Degradability for a Flexible Stretchable Strain Sensor.

With the rapid development of flexible electronics and the increasing deterioration of the natural environment, functional and environmentally friendly flexible strain sensors have become one of the frontier research hotspots. Here, we propose a novel strategy to synthesize a functional epoxy elastomer integrating self-healing capability and degradability for flexible stretchable strain sensors. A carboxyl-terminated epoxy prepolymer was first synthesized using carboxyl-terminated PEG (PEG-COOH), 2,2'-dithiodibenzoic acid (DTSA), and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE), and then crosslinked by epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) to yield an epoxy elastomer. The obtained elastomer exhibited not only high tensile stress (5.07 MPa), large stretchability (477%), and high healing efficiency (92.5%) but also superior degradability in alkaline aqueous solution. The elastomer-based stretchable strain sensor with microstructure showed high sensitivity (GF = 176.71) and was successfully applied for detecting human motions and recognizing objects with various shapes. Moreover, the healed sensor could restore stable sensing ability. The prepared functional epoxy elastomer is of great significance for the preparation of environmentally friendly and high-performance sensors and is promising for applications in the fields of healthcare monitoring, intelligent robots, and wearable electronics.

Kinetical Study, Thermo-Mechanical Characteristics and Recyclability of Epoxidized Camelina Oil Cured with Antagonist Structure (Aliphatic/Aromatic) or Functionality (Acid/Amine) Hardeners.

In an attempt to prepare sustainable epoxy thermosets, this study introduces for the first time the idea to use antagonist structures (aromatic/aliphatic) or functionalities (acid/amine) as hardeners to produce reprocessable resins based on epoxidized camelina oil (ECMO). Two kinds of mixtures were tested: one combines aromatic/aliphatic dicarboxylic acids: 2,2′-dithiodibenzoic acid (DTBA) and 3,3′-dithiodipropionic acid (DTDA); another is the combination of two aromatic structures with acid/amine functionality: DTBA and 4-aminophenyl disulfide (4-AFD). DSC and FT-IR analyses were used as methods to analyze the curing reaction of ECMO with the hardeners. It was found that the thermosets obtained with the dual crosslinked mechanism needed reduced curing temperatures and reprocessing protocols compared to the individual crosslinked thermosets. Thanks to the contribution of disulfide bonds in the network topology, the obtained thermosets showed recycling ability. The final thermomechanical properties of the virgin and mechanical reprocessed materials were analyzed by DMA and TGA. The obtained thermosets range from elastomeric to rigid materials. As an example, the ECMO/DTBA704-AFD30 virgin or reprocessed thermosets have tan δ values reaching 82–83 °C. The study also investigates the chemical recycling and the solvent resistance of these vitrimer-like materials.

Multiple cross‐linked networks enhanced ENR‐based composite with excellent self‐healing properties

AbstractSelf‐healing property is an excellent feature that can improve the reliability and durability of the materials. In this study, carboxylic multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (S‐CNTs) and 2,2′‐dithiodibenzoic acid (DTSA) were introduced into epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) to prepare a self‐healing rubber. S‐CNTs and DTSA could react with epoxy groups of ENR to effectively cross‐link ENR, in which the cross‐linked network consisted of reversible disulfide bonds, β‐hydroxyl ester bonds, and hydrogen bonds. The reconfigurable cross‐linked network endowed the ENR/S‐CNTs/DTSA composites with great self‐healing behavior with efficiency up to 99.7%. The multiple cross‐linked networks also enhanced the mechanical properties of the composite, whose tensile strength reached more than 400% of the neat ENR. Additionally, optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy disclosed the evolution of the damaged area during the self‐healing process, and the crack could be completely repaired after the healing process. This work provides an effective and concise method to prepare self‐healing ENR‐based elastomer, and it may expand the research scope of self‐healing materials.

Recyclable, Repairable, and Reshapable (3R) Thermoset Materials with Shape Memory Properties from Bio-Based Epoxidized Vegetable Oils.

The preparation of thermosets based on epoxidized vegetable oils (EVOs) involved a peculiar attention in recent years; however, most of them cannot be recycled once cross-linked. In the present work, epoxy thermosetting resins like-vitrimers with dynamic disulfide covalent bonds were prepared by copolymerizing twelve EVOs with 2,2'-dithiodibenzoic acid, as hardener. Here, we show for the first time the reprocessability, repairability, and recyclability properties of EVOs thermosets. The 3R abilities were evaluated in correlation with the EVO epoxy contents, which influence the final thermo-mechanical properties of the recycled material. The virgin versus recycled materials' comparison was studied by FT-IR, DSC, TGA, and DMA, also comparing their swelling ability and high gel content. The study investigates, in addition, the excellent shape memory properties of the reprocessed EVOs/disulfide materials.

A bimetallic coordination polymer is prepared via a hydrothermal reaction of H2DDBA and In(NO3) water with NaOH as a pH regulator. Its chemical formula is [In2Na(H2O)6(ddba)3](NO3)(H2O)7 (1, H2ddba = 4,4′-dithiodibenzoic acid). The composition and atomic arrangement of the prepared complexes are studied by the elemental analysis (EA) and the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. Moreover, a process of sonochemistry with oleic acid treatment at 453 K is used to produce nanostructure the biological function detection, a miRNA relative expression is detected via RT-PCR and Bcl-2 expression level is determined with the Western blot. The Annexin V-FITC/PI staining is performed to detect retinoblastoma cell apoptosis after treatment with nano-1.

2,2'-(Disulfanedi-yl)di-benzoic acid N,N-di-methyl-formamide monosolvate: crystal structure, Hirshfeld surface analysis and computational study.

The title 1:1 solvate, C14H10O4S2·C3H7NO, features a twisted mol-ecule of 2,2'-di-thiodi-benzoic acid (DTBA), with the central C-S-S-C torsion angle being -88.57 (6)°, and a mol-ecule of di-methyl-formamide (DMF). The carb-oxy-lic acid groups are, respectively, close to co-planar and twisted with respect to the benzene rings to which they are connected as seen in the CO2/C6 torsion angles of 1.03 (19) and 7.4 (2)°. Intra-molecular, hypervalent S←O inter-actions are noted [S⋯O = 2.6140 (9) and 2.6827 (9) Å]. In the crystal, four-mol-ecule aggregates are formed via DTBA-O-H⋯O(DMF) and DTBA-O-H⋯O(DTBA) hydrogen bonding, the latter via an eight-membered {⋯OHCO}2 homosynthon. These are linked into supra-molecular layers parallel to (011) via benzene-C-H⋯O(DTBA) and DTBA-C=O⋯π(benzene) inter-actions, with the connections between these, giving rise to a three-dimensional architecture, being of the type benzene-C-H⋯π(benzene). An analysis of the calculated Hirshfeld surfaces indicates, in addition to the aforementioned inter-molecular contacts, the presence of stabilizing inter-actions between a benzene ring and a quasi-π-system defined by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between a DTBA dimer, i.e. the eight-membered {⋯OCOH}2 ring system, and between a benzene ring and a quasi-π(OCOH⋯OCH) system arising from the DTBA-O-H⋯O(DMF) hydrogen bond. The inter-centroid separations are 3.65 and 3.49 Å, respectively.
