Non-thermal fusion burning processes, relevant collective modes and gained perspectives

Abstract New tridimensional plasma structures, that are oscillatory and classified as non-separable ballooning modes, can emerge in inhomogeneous plasmas and undergo resonant mode-particle interactions, e.g., with a minority population, that can lead them to modify their spatial profiles. Thus, unlike the case of previously known ballooning modes their amplitudes are not separable functions of time and space. The relevant resonance conditions are intrinsically different from those of the well-known Landau conditions for (ordinary) plasma waves: they involve the mode geometry and affect different regions of the distribution in momentum space at different positions in configuration space. A process for a transfer of energy among different particle populations is envisioned.

Far-from-equilibrium slow modes and momentum anisotropy in an expanding plasma

The momentum distribution of particle production in heavy-ion collisions encodes information about thermalization processes in the early-stage quark-gluon plasma. We use kinetic theory to study the far-from-equilibrium evolution of an expanding plasma with an anisotropic momentum-space distribution. We identify slow and fast degrees of freedom in the far-from-equilibrium plasma from the evolution of moments of this distribution. At late times, the slow modes correspond to hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and are naturally gapped from the fast modes by the inverse of the relaxation time, τR−1. At early times, however, there are an infinite number of slow modes with a gap inversely proportional to time, τ−1. From the evolution of the slow modes we generalize the paradigm of the far-from-equilibrium attractor to vector and tensor components of the energy-momentum tensor, and even to higher moments of the distribution function that are not part of the hydrodynamic evolution. We predict that initial-state momentum anisotropy decays slowly in the far-from-equilibrium phase and may persist until the relaxation time. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Radiation reaction kinetics and collective QED signatures

Observing collective effects originating from the interplay between quantum electrodynamics and plasma physics might be achieved in upcoming experiments. In particular, the generation of electron–positron pairs and the observation of their collective dynamics could be simultaneously achieved in a collision between an intense laser and a highly relativistic electron beam through a laser frequency shift driven by an increase in the plasma density increase. In this collision, the radiation of high-energy photons will serve a dual purpose: first, in seeding the cascade of pair generation; and, second, in decelerating the created pairs for detection. The deceleration results in a detectable shift in the plasma frequency. This deceleration was previously studied considering only a small sample of individual pair particles. However, the highly stochastic nature of the quantum radiation reaction in the strong-field regime limits the descriptive power of the average behavior to the dynamics of pair particles. Here, we examine the full kinetic evolution of generated pairs in order to more accurately model the relativistically adjusted plasma density. As we show, the most effective pair energy for creating observable signatures occurs at a local minimum, obtained at finite laser field strength due to the trade-off between pair deceleration and the relativistic particle oscillation at increasing laser intensity. For a small number of laser cycles, the quantum radiation reaction may re-arrange the generated pairs into anisotropic distributions in momentum space, although, in the one-dimensional simulations considered here, this anisotropy quickly decreases.

NNLL resummation of Sudakov shoulder logarithms in the heavy jet mass distribution

The heavy jet mass event shape has large perturbative logarithms near the leading order kinematic threshold at ρ=13\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$ \\rho =\\frac{1}{3} $$\\end{document}. Catani and Webber named these logarithms Sudakov shoulders and resummed them at double-logarithmic level. A resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic level was achieved recently. Here, we extend the resummation using an effective field theory framework to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order and show how to combine it with the resummation of dijet logarithms. We also solve the open problem of an unphysical singularity in the resummed momentum space distribution, in a way similar to how it is resolved in the Drell-Yan qT spectrum: through a careful analysis of the kinematics and scale-setting in position space. The heavy jet mass Sudakov shoulder is the first observable that does not involve transverse momentum for which position space resummation is critical. These advances may lead to a more precise extraction of the strong coupling constant from e+e− data.

Direct determination of 2D momentum space from 2D spatial coherence of light using a modified Michelson interferometer.

Momentum space distribution of photons coming out of any light emitting material/device provides critical information about their underlying physical origin. Conventional methods of determining such properties impose specific instrumentational difficulties for probing samples kept within a low temperature cryostat. There were past studies to measure a one-dimensional coherence function, which could then be used for extracting momentum space information, as well as reports of measurements of just a two-dimensional (2D) coherence function. However, all of those are associated with additional experimental complexities. So, here we propose a simpler, modified Michelson interferometer based optical setup that is kept at room temperature and placed outside the low temperature cryostat at a distance away from it. We initially measure the 2D coherence function of emitted light, which can then be used to directly estimate the 2D in-plane momentum space distribution by calculating its fast Fourier transform. We also discuss how this experimental method can overcome instrumentational difficulties encountered in the past. Similar instrumentations can also be extended for momentum space resolved astronomical studies and telecommunications involving distant light sources.

Gravitational transverse-momentum distributions

We study the energy-momentum tensor of spin-0 and spin-12 hadrons in momentum space. We parametrize this object in terms of so-called gravitational transverse-momentum distributions, and we identify in the quark sector the relations between the latter and the usual transverse-momentum distributions. Focusing on particular components of the energy-momentum tensor, we study momentum densities, flux of inertia and stress distribution in momentum space, revealing part of the wealth of physical information that can be gained from higher-twist transverse-momentum distributions.

Itinerant ferromagnetism entrenched by the anisotropy of spin–orbit coupling in a dipolar Fermi gas

We investigate the itinerant ferromagnetism in a dipolar Fermi atomic system with the anisotropic spin–orbit coupling (SOC), which is traditionally explored with isotropic contact interaction. We first study the ferromagnetism transition boundaries and the properties of the ground states through the density and spin-flip distribution in momentum space, and we find that both the anisotropy and the magnitude of the SOC play an important role in this process. We propose a helpful scheme and a quantum control method which can be applied to conquering the difficulties of previous experimental observation of itinerant ferromagnetism. Our further study reveals that exotic Fermi surfaces and an abnormal phase region can exist in this system by controlling the anisotropy of SOC, which can provide constructive suggestions for the research and the application of a dipolar Fermi gas. Furthermore, we also calculate the ferromagnetism transition temperature and novel distributions in momentum space at finite temperature beyond the ground states from the perspective of experiment.

Electron-Induced Chirality-Selective Routing of Valley Photons via Metallic Nanostructure.

Valleytronics in 2Dtransition metal dichalcogenides has raised a great impact in nanophotonic information processing and transport as it provides the pseudospin degree of freedom for carrier control. The imbalance of carrier occupation in inequivalent valleys can be achieved by external stimulations such as helical light and electric field. With metasurfaces, it is feasible to separate the valley exciton in real space and momentum space, which is significant for logical nanophotonic circuits. However, the control of valley-separated far-field emission by a single nanostructure is rarely reported, despite the fact that it is crucial for subwavelength research of valley-dependent directional emission. Here, it is demonstrated that the electron beam permits the chirality-selective routing of valley photons in a monolayer WS2 with Au nanostructures. The electron beam can locally excite valley excitons and regulate the coupling between excitons and nanostructures, hence controlling the interference effect of multipolar electric modes in nanostructures. Therefore, the separation degree can be modified by steering the electron beam, exhibiting the capability of subwavelength control of valley separation. This work provides a novel method to create and resolve the variation of valley emission distribution in momentum space, paving the way for the design of future nanophotonic integrated devices.

Stationary Charge Radiation in Anisotropic Photonic Time Crystals.

Time metamaterials offer a great potential for wave manipulation, drawing increasing attention in recent years. Here, we explore the exotic wave dynamics of an anisotropic photonic time crystal (APTC) formed by an anisotropic medium whose optical properties are uniformly and periodically changed in time. Based on a temporal transfer matrix formalism, we show that a stationary charge embedded in an APTC emits radiation, in contrast to the case of isotropic photonic time crystals, and its distribution in momentum space is controlled by the APTC band structure. Our approach extends the functionalities of time metamaterials, offering new opportunities for radiation generation and control, with implications for both classical and quantum applications.

Correlation in momentum space of Tonks–Girardeau gas

In momentum space, we investigate the correlation properties of the ground state of Tonks–Girardeau gases. With Bose–Fermi mapping method, the exact ground state wavefunction in coordinate space can be obtained based on the wavefunction of spin-polarized Fermions. By Fourier transformation we obtain the ground state wavefunction in momentum space, and therefore the pair correlation and the reduced one-body density matrix (ROBDM) in momentum space, whose diagonal part is the momentum distribution. The ROBDM in momentum space is the Fourier transformation of the ROBDM in coordinate space and the pair correlation in momentum space is the Fourier transformation of the reduced two-body density matrix in coordinate space. The correlations in momentum space display larger values only in small momentum region and vanish in most other regions. The lowest natural orbital and occupation distribution in momentum space are also obtained.

Nonlinear Hall effects in two-dimensional moiré superlattices

The Hall effect refers to the generation of a voltage in a direction perpendicular to the applied current. Since its discovery in 1879, the Hall effect family has become a huge group, and its in-depth study is an important topic in the field of condensed matter physics. The newly discovered nonlinear Hall effect is a new member of Hall effects. Unlike most of previous Hall effects, the nonlinear Hall effect does not need to break the time-reversal symmetry of the system but requires the spatial inversion asymmetry. Since 2015, the nonlinear Hall effect has been predicted and observed in several kinds of materials with a nonuniform distribution of the Berry curvature of energy bands. Experimentally, when a longitudinal alternating current (AC) electric field is applied, a transverse Hall voltage will be generated, with its amplitude proportional to the square of the driving current. Such a nonlinear Hall signal contains two components: one is an AC transverse voltage oscillating at twice the frequency of the driving current, and the other is a direct current (DC) signal converted from the injected current. Although the history of the nonlinear Hall effect is only a few years, its broad application prospects in fields of wireless communication, energy harvesting, and infrared detectors have been widely recognized. The main reason is that the frequency doubling and rectification of electrical signals via some nonlinear Hall effects are achieved by an inherent quantum property of the material - the Berry curvature dipole moment, and therefore do not have the thermal voltage thresholds and/or the transition time characteristic of semiconductor junctions/diodes. Unfortunately, the existence of the Berry curvature dipole moment has more stringent requirements for the lattice symmetry breaking of the system apart from the spatial inversion breaking, and the materials available are largely limited. This greatly reduces the chance to optimize the signal of the nonlinear Hall effect and limits the application and development of the nonlinear Hall effect. The rapid development of van der Waals stacking technology in recent years provides a brand new way to design, tailor and control the symmetry of lattice, and to prepare artificial moiré crystals with certain physical properties. Recently, both theoretical results and experimental studies on graphene superlattices and transition metal dichalcogenide superlattices have shown that artificial moiré superlattice materials can have larger Berry curvature dipole moments than those in natural non-moiré crystals, which has obvious advantages in generating and manipulating the nonlinear Hall effect. On the other hand, abundant strong correlation effects have been observed in two-dimensional superlattices. The study of the nonlinear Hall effect in two-dimensional moiré superlattices can not only give people a new understanding of the momentum space distribution of Berry curvatures, contributing to the realization of more stable topological transport, correlation insulating states and superfluidity states, but also expand the functional space of moiré superlattice materials which are promising for the design of new electronic and optoelectronic devices. This review paper firstly introduces the birth and development of the nonlinear Hall effect and discusses two mechanisms of the nonlinear Hall effect: the Berry curvature dipole moment and the disorder. Subsequently, this paper summaries some properties of two-dimensional moiré superlattices which are essential in realizing the nonlinear Hall effect: considerable Berry curvatures, symmetry breaking effects, strong correlation effects and tunable band structures. Next, this paper reviews theoretical and experimental progress of nonlinear Hall effects in graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides superlattices. Finally, the future research directions and potential applications of the nonlinear Hall effect based on moiré superlattice materials are prospected.

Revisiting evolution equations for generalised parton distributions

We revisit the evolution of generalised parton distributions (GPDs) in momentum space. We formulate the evolution kernels at one loop in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) in a form that is suitable for numerical implementation and that allows for an accurate study of their properties. This leads to the first open-source implementation of GPD evolution equations able to cover the entire kinematic region and allowing for heavy-quark-threshold crossings. The numerical implementation of the GPD evolution equations is publicly accessible through the APFEL++ evolution library and is available within the PARTONS framework. Our formulation makes use of the operator definition of GPDs in light-cone gauge renormalised in the overline{text{ MS }} scheme. For the sake of clarity, we recompute the evolution kernels at one loop in pQCD, confirming previous calculations. We obtain general conditions on the evolution kernels derived from the GPD sum rules and show that our formulation obeys these conditions. We analytically show that our calculation reproduces the DGLAP and the ERBL equations in the appropriate limits and that it guarantees the continuity of GPDs. We numerically check that the evolved GPDs fulfil DGLAP and ERBL limits, continuity, and polynomiality. We benchmark our numerical implementation against analytical evolution in conformal space. Finally, we perform a numerical comparison to an existing implementation of GPD evolution, finding general good agreement on the kinematic region accessible to the latter. This work provides a pedagogical description of GPD evolution equations which benefits from a renewed interest as future colliders, such as the electron-ion colliders in the United States and in China, are being designed. It also paves the way for the extension of GPD evolution codes to higher accuracies in pQCD desirable for precision phenomenology at these facilities.

Crystallization via cavity-assisted infinite-range interactions

We study a one-dimensional array of bosons with infinite-range interactions mediated by a laser-driven dissipative optical cavity. The cavity-mediated infinite-range interactions open up a new pathway to fermionization, hitherto only known for dipolar bosons due to their long-range interactions. In parameter ranges attainable in state-of-the-art experiments, we systematically compare observables for bosons and fermions with infinite-range interactions. At large enough laser pump power, many observables, including density distributions in real and momentum space, correlation functions, eigenvalues of the one-body density matrix, and superradiance order parameter, become identical for bosons and fermions. We map out the emergence of this cavity-induced fermionization as a function of pump power and contact interactions. We discover that cavity-mediated interactions can compensate a reduction by several orders of magnitude in the strength of the contact interactions needed to trigger fermionization.

Itinerant ferromagnetism of a dipolar Fermi gas with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling

We elucidate the itinerant ferromagnetism of a dipolar Fermi gas with a Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling by investigating the exotic phase diagrams. It is revealed that the dipolar interaction along with spin-orbit coupling can corroborate the formation of ferromagnetism and that the Raman coupling adversely eliminates the tendency to this ferromagnetism transition, which greatly transcends the general understanding of this subject with contact interaction only. We explore the ground states through the density and spin-flip distribution in momentum space. We calculate the transition temperatures well within the reach of an experimental system when altering the dipolar and spin-orbit-coupling strength, which paves a way to the further experimental realization.

Deep Learning of the Eddington Tensor in Core-collapse Supernova Simulation

Abstract We trained deep neural networks (DNNs) as a function of the neutrino energy density, flux, and the fluid velocity to reproduce the Eddington tensor for neutrinos obtained in our first-principles core-collapse supernova simulation. Although the moment method, which is one of the most popular approximations for neutrino transport, requires a closure relation, none of the analytical closure relations commonly employed in the literature capture all aspects of the neutrino angular distribution in momentum space. In this paper, we develop a closure relation by using DNNs that take the neutrino energy density, flux, and the fluid velocity as the inputs and the Eddington tensor as the output. We consider two kinds of DNNs: a conventional DNN, named a component-wise neural network (CWNN), and a tensor-basis neural network (TBNN). We find that the diagonal component of the Eddington tensor is better reproduced by the DNNs than the M1 closure relation, especially for low to intermediate energies. For the off-diagonal component, the DNNs agree better with the Boltzmann solver than the M1 closure relation at large radii. In the comparison between the two DNNs, the TBNN displays slightly better performance than the CWNN. With these new closure relations at hand, based on DNNs that well reproduce the Eddington tensor at much lower costs, we have opened up a new possibility for the moment method.

Suppressions of dijet azimuthal correlations in the future EIC

Quark-antiquark pair (or dijet) production at the electron-ion collider (EIC) has been argued to be one of most important processes that allowing to access the Weizs\"acker-Williams (WW) gluon distributions at small $x$ limit. Within the framework of Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory (EFT), we calculated the dijet cross sections and the azimuthal correlations by including the Sudakov resummations, numerical results shown that the back-to-back correlations are significantly suppressed when the Sudakov resummations are taken into account. In addition, by using the solutions of running-coupling Balitsky-Kovchegov (rcBK) equation, the unpolarized and linearly polarized WW gluon distributions both in coordinate and momentum space are presented.

Adiabatic hydrodynamization in rapidly-expanding quark–gluon plasma

We propose a new scenario characterizing the transition of the quark–gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions from a highly non-equilibrium state at early times toward a fluid described by hydrodynamics at late times. We develop an analogy to the evolution of a quantum mechanical system that is governed by the instantaneous ground states. In the simplest case, these slow modes are “pre-hydrodynamic” in the sense that they are initially distinct from, but evolve continuously into, hydrodynamic modes. For a class of collision integrals, the pre-hydrodynamic mode represents the angular distribution (in momentum space) of those gluons that carry most of the energy. We illustrate this scenario using a kinetic description of weakly-coupled Bjorken expanding plasma. Rapid longitudinal expansion drives a reduction in the degrees of freedom at early times. In the relaxation time approximation for the collision integral, we show quantitatively that the full kinetic theory evolution is dominated by the pre-hydrodynamic mode. We elaborate on the criterion for the dominance of pre-hydrodynamic slow modes and speculate that adiabatic hydrodynamization may describe the pre-equilibrium behavior of the QGP produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Why does statistical mechanics ‘work’ in condensed matter?

The reasons behind the possibility of using the Gibbs distribution in condensed matter are considered. While the basics of statistical mechanics in gases are covered in great detail in many textbooks and reviews, the reasons for using the Gibbs distribution in crystals, glasses, and liquids are rarely considered. Most textbooks still only speak of a qualitative replacement of the mechanical description with a statistical one when considering a very large number of particles. At the same time, it turns out that the Gibbs distribution is not formally applicable to a harmonic crystal of a large number of particles. However, a system of even a small number of coupled anharmonic oscillators can demonstrate all the basic features of thermodynamically equilibrium crystals and liquids. It is the nonlinearity (anharmonism) of vibrations that leads to the mixing of phase trajectories and ergodicity of condensed matter. When the system goes into a state of thermodynamic equilibrium, there are 3 characteristic time scales: the time of thermalization of the system (in fact, the time of establishment of the local Gibbs distribution in momentum space and establishment of the local temperature); the time of establishment of a uniform temperature in the system after contact with the thermostat; and, finally, the time of establishment of ergodicity in the system (in fact, the time of ‘sweeping’ the entire phase space, including its coordinate part). The genesis of defect formation and diffusion in crystals and glasses, as well as their ergodicity, is discussed.

A hybrid renormalization scheme for quasi light-front correlations in large-momentum effective theory

In large-momentum effective theory (LaMET), calculating parton physics starts from calculating coordinate-space-z correlation functions h˜(z,a,Pz) in a hadron of momentum Pz in lattice QCD. Such correlation functions involve both linear and logarithmic divergences in lattice spacing a, and thus need to be properly renormalized. We introduce a hybrid renormalization procedure to match these lattice correlations to those in the continuum MS‾ scheme, without introducing extra non-perturbative effects at large z. We analyze the effect of O(ΛQCD) ambiguity in the Wilson line self-energy subtraction involved in this hybrid scheme. To obtain the momentum-space distributions, we recommend to extrapolate the lattice data to the asymptotic z-region using the generic properties of the coordinate space correlations at moderate and large Pz, respectively.

Statistical mechanics of a nonequilibrium steady-state classical particle system driven by a constant external force

A classical particle system coupled with a thermostat driven by an external constant force reaches its steady state when the ensemble-averaged drift velocity does not vary with time. In this work, the statistical mechanics of such a system is derived solely based on the equiprobability and ergodicity principles, free from any conclusions drawn on equilibrium statistical mechanics or local equilibrium hypothesis. The momentum space distribution is determined by a random walk argument, and the position space distribution is determined by employing the equiprobability and ergodicity principles. The expressions for energy, entropy, free energy, and pressures are then deduced, and the relation among external force, drift velocity, and temperature is also established. Moreover, the relaxation towards its equilibrium is found to be an exponentially decaying process obeying the minimum entropy production theorem.
