Constraining the ductile deformation mechanisms of garnet across pressure-temperature space

Garnet is a common mineral at elevated pressures, and how it deforms plays an important role in the strength of lower crustal shear zones, subduction thrusts, and the mantle. Strong shape preferred orientations in elongate garnets at elevated temperatures and pressures attests to garnet's ability to deform through ductile mechanisms; however, how individual garnets deformed is frequently ambiguous or disputed. Garnet microstructures from the Morin shear zone and the Sulu ultra-high pressure terrane are revisited using fine-scale electron backscattered diffraction and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy mapping. The dominant deformation mechanism at each site is re-interpreted, and we show that garnet deformed through dissolution-precipitation creep at Sulu and through dislocation-assisted diffusion creep at Morin. These observations are integrated into a compilation of ductile deformation microstructures for garnet which reveals domains where dissolution-precipitation creep, recovery-accommodated dislocation creep (through subgrain rotation dynamic recrystallization), and dislocation-assisted diffusion creep dominate in P-T space. Garnet may deform through ductile deformation at temperatures as low as ~500 °C and deforms under low differential stresses in both eclogite and granulite facies conditions. The efficacy of deformation indicates that 1) garnet may not be the strongest phase in these environments, and 2) that at elevated temperatures, inclusion barometry may be affected by garnet's inability to maintain high differential stress.

Dynamics of the Chemically Driven Densification of Barium Titanate Using Molten Hydroxides.

Molten hydroxides, often used for crystal growth and nanoparticle synthesis, have recently been applied for the single step densification of several inorganic materials under moderate uniaxial pressures and 1000 °C below their usual sintering temperatures. The latter approach, termed cold sintering process (CSP), is a mechanochemically driven process that enables the densification of inorganic materials through a dissolution-precipitation creep mechanism. In this study, we report the main densification mechanisms of BaTiO3 in a NaOH-KOH eutectic mixture. A chemical insight at the atomistic level, investigated by ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations, offers plausible ionic complex formation scenarios and reactions at the BaTiO3/molten hydroxide interface, enabling the dissolution-precipitation reactions and the subsequent cold sintering of BaTiO3.

Fluid flow and syntectonic veining in an Ediacaran-Cambrian foreland fold–thrust zone, western margin of the São Francisco Craton, Brazil

The western margin of the São Francisco Craton, central Brazil presents a 1300 km long foreland fold–thrust belt where Ediacaran-Cambrian (560–520 Ma) metasedimentary rocks from the Bambuí Group were subsequently deformed during post-collisional stages (520–495 Ma) related to Gondwana assembly. This scenario provides an opportunity to quantify fluid flow regimes and fault-related processes that were active in exhumed foreland fold–thrust zones, which were estimated based on structural, microstructural and fluid inclusion studies of syntectonic veins and host rocks. Kaolinite-bearing synkinematic mineral assemblages from metasedimentary rocks, thermodynamic models and grain-scale deformation accommodated by dissolution–precipitation creep and intracrystalline deformation indicate metamorphic and deformational conditions of 250–270°C. Subhorizontal extensional veins formed under subhorizontal shortening and subvertical extension, supporting vein development under a fold–thrust regime that formed regional NW–SE-trending thrust fault zones and megafolds with NW–SE-trending axes. Orientation and growth microstructures indicate that NW–SE-trending subvertical cleavage-parallel veins formed under subhorizontal NE–SW extension, compatible with those inferred to produce mapped kilometre-scale gentle folds with NE–SW-trending traces. Two primary aqueous fluid inclusion assemblages (FIA) are distinguished by salinity variation: 2–21 wt% NaCl eq. in subhorizontal veins and 6–0 wt% NaCl eq. in cleavage-parallel subvertical veins. Fluid inclusion thermometry and microstructural analysis suggest that veins crystallized between 250 and 270°C under fluid pressure fluctuating within a range of 50–500 MPa (subhorizontal veins) and 80–320 MPa (cleavage-parallel subvertical veins), evidencing fault-valve behaviour. Trends of coupled decreases in salinity and homogenization temperatures in both FIA indicate downward mixing of meteoric fluids, which was more effective in subvertical veins and was in both cases enhanced by fault-valve behaviour. Dominance of moderate salinity and absence of CO 2 and CH 4 indicate that the fluids are dominated by formation waters. The salinity signature is similar to those of formation waters and metamorphic fluids derived from rocks of shallow marine environments worldwide. Structural and chemical resetting processes in white mica and their effect on K-Ar data during low temperature metamorphism

White mica has been widely used to date microstructures and tectonic events in faults, shear-zones and folds because of its suitability for radiogenic dating. However, complex (i) microstructural evolution, (ii) individual chemical evolution of the K-bearing phases, (iii) mixing of ‘detrital grains’ with newly formed and/or recrystallized or chemically reset grains as well as (iv) volume diffusion may result in apparent K-Ar ages. Here, specimens from a prograde sediment sequence of the exhumed fossil European Alpine accretionary wedge were used to investigate resetting processes of white mica by the type and intensity of deformation as well as peak metamorphic conditions. We combine the K-Ar system with mass and mineral quantities from grain size fractions to calculate the amount of recrystallized white mica in each grain size fraction along the metamorphic gradient. Increasing recrystallization with increasing metamorphic grade is related to thermally activated pressure solution and dissolution-precipitation creep, as seen by the formation of a spaced cleavage of recrystallized phyllosilicates documented through Synchrotron X-ray Fluorescence Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscope imaging techniques. Increasing recrystallization by dissolution-precipitation processes induces chemical resetting of the isotopic system, resulting in a prograde decrease of apparent K-Ar ages. We demonstrate that Ar volume diffusion does not play a significant role for the low-temperature samples, promoting recrystallization as the important physico-chemical process for age resetting. However, white mica chemistry reveals that no simple relation between isotopic resetting and grain size exists along the prograde path. Reliable age information can therefore only be obtained in the case of (nearly) complete resetting, which accounts only for the smallest grain size fraction at the highest metamorphic temperature. These findings could shed new light on accurate dating of mica-rich fault rocks, where the time constraints depend not only on the temperature, but also on the amount and type of deformation.

Thermo-Structural Evolution of the Val Malenco (Italy) Peridotite: A Petrological, Geochemical and Microstructural Study

The Val Malenco peridotite massif is one of the largest exposed ultramafic massifs in Alpine orogen. To better constrain its tectonic history, we have performed a comprehensive petro-structural and geochemical study. Our results show that the Val Malenco serpentinized peridotite recorded both pre-Alpine extension and Alpine convergence events. The pre-Alpine extension is recorded by microstructural and geochemical features preserved in clinopyroxene and olivine porphyroblasts, including partial melting and refertilisation, high-temperature (900–1000 °C) deformation and a cooling, and fluid-rock reaction. The following Alpine convergence in a supra-subduction zone setting is documented by subduction-related prograde metamorphism features preserved in the coarse-grained antigorite and olivine grains in the less-strained olivine-rich layers, and later low-temperature (<350 °C) serpentinization in the fine-grained antigorite in the more strained antigorite-rich layers. The strain shadow structure in the more strained antigorite-rich layer composed of dissolving clinopyroxene porphyroblast and the precipitated oriented diopside and olivine suggest dissolution and precipitation creep, while the consistency between the strain shadow structure and alternating less- and more-strained serpentinized domains highlights the increasing role of strain localization induced by the dissolution-precipitation creep with decreasing temperature during exhumation in Alpine convergence events.

Friction properties of hornblende and implications for slow-slip events in subduction zones

In order to understand the friction properties of amphibole as a primary constituent mineral in subduction zones, we used hornblende as the simulated gouge material to conduct two series of shearing experiments at temperatures from 101 to 607 °C under confining pressures of 136 MPa and 83 MPa, a pore pressure of 30 MPa and loading rates of 0.0488–1.22 μm/s. Steady-state friction coefficients in the high confining pressure series exhibited values between 0.70 and 0.72 with an average of ~0.71, without showing a systematic temperature dependence. The counterpart in the low confining pressure series ranged from 0.67 to 0.73 and exhibited a temperature-dependent decline for temperatures above 400 °C. Velocity-weakening behaviors were observed at 303, 505 and 607 °C in the high confining pressure series, and at 303 and 403 °C in the low confining pressure series. The |a-b| parameter associated with velocity weakening of hornblende in our high and low confining pressure experiments are 0.0005–0.0014 and 0.0014–0.0015, respectively. The b values, which represent the evolution effect in friction, were found to increase with increasing temperature, suggesting a thermally-activated process that produced creep at asperity. Ubiquitously precipitated particles in the deformed gouge suggest that dissolution-precipitation creep may be the most likely mechanism associated with the evolution effect and therefore velocity weakening. The very low velocity weakening observed for hornblende (|a-b| ≤ 0.0015) provides a favorable condition for nucleation of slow-slip events to occur in subduction zones over a wider range of effective normal stress.

Deformation mechanisms accommodating progressive simple shear thrusting of quartzite and metacarbonate in the southwestern Espinhaço Range, Brazil

The accommodation of low-temperature ductile deformation in foreland fold-and-thrust belts is often described in terms of outcrop-based geometric analysis, but microtextural observations are also important, as they relate stress, strain, fluids and temperature and thus the rheology in the peripheral part of the orogen. Such microtextural observations are lacking from the foreland part of the Araçuaí orogen in Brazil, and are here investigated through EBSD-based textural analysis of quartzites and metacarbonate samples from the southwestern Espinhaço Range. The quartzites overthrust the metacarbonates, and deform solely by the activation of dissolution-precipitation creep, whereas the metacarbonates show a much greater variety of deformation mechanisms that closely relate to grain-size, composition and strain, in the long (low-angle) and short (steep) limbs of shear-related folds. The metacarbonates show a centimeter-scale alternation of coarse-grained domains of calcite and quartz, and fine-grained domains of a mix of phases (calcite, dolomite, phyllosilicates, quartz, and apatite). In the strongly sheared long limbs, coarse calcite was deformed by dislocation creep with slip on (c)<a>, whereas fine calcite displays evidence of oriented dissolution-precipitation creep, with both cases displaying <c> axis orientations consistent with the top-to-the-west thrusting. Coarse calcite shows evidence of recovery by subgrain rotation and grain boundary migration. Coarse-grained calcite in the short limbs was deformed by dislocation creep, assisted by twin boundary migration recrystallization with twinning on {e}, indicating simple shear-dominated deformation. In contrast, fine-grained calcite was deformed by fluid-assisted grain boundary sliding. Dissolution-precipitation in both short and long limbs produced random textures, with the exception of coarse quartz in the short limbs, where dissolution-precipitation creep led to <c> axis orientation parallel to X. This study demonstrates that the foreland thrust zone of the Araçuaí orogen underwent consistent W-directed progressive thrusting, and that this deformation produced a wide variety of texture types in the metacarbonates while a simpler structural and textural pattern developed in adjacent quartzitic metasediments.

Strain localization and fluid-assisted deformation in apatite and its influence on trace elements and U–Pb systematics

This paper presents electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), trace element and U–Pb data of apatite grains from a granitic mylonite from the Taxaquara Shear Zone (SE Brazil). The mylonite recrystallized under upper-greenschist facies and presents two types of apatite with distinct microstructures. Type-1 apatite appears in quartz-rich layers and does not exhibit any microstructural, crystallographic, or chemical evidence of deformation/recrystallization, and resembles the original igneous apatite. Type-2 apatite appears in mica-rich layers and exhibits core-and-mantle microstructures, and intragranular subgrain development, suggesting that they have undergone dynamic recrystallization. Recrystallized tails of type-2 apatite grains exhibit a strong c-axis crystallographic preferred orientation parallel to the X-direction (stretching lineation), and lack evidence of dislocation density. This evidence from type-2 apatite grains, combined with REE depletion, high La and a negative Ce anomaly compared to type-1 grains, suggests that type-2 apatite tails underwent recrystallization via dissolution-precipitation creep, whereas parental grains underwent crystal-plastic deformation and subgrain formation through dynamic recrystallization. Phase-equilibrium modelling and quartz CPO opening-angle thermometry are consistent with recrystallization at ∼480 – 530°C and 2.2 – 5.0 kbar. We were not able to determine precise deformation ages from type-2 apatite because fluid-assisted recrystallization appears to have substantially decreased the U/Pb ratio. We find that preferential fluid flow along high-strain, biotite-rich layers in the mylonite caused type-2 apatite to recrystallise, whereas type-1 apatite in low strain layers was unaffected and retained the characteristics of the protolith.

Feedback between high-pressure genesis of abiotic methane and strain localization in subducted carbonate rocks

Fluid-rock interactions exert key control over rock rheology and strain localization. Redox may significantly affect the reaction pathways and, thereby, the mechanical properties of the rock. This effect may become critical in volatile-rich, redox sensitive rocks such as carbonate-rich lithologies, the breakdown of which can significantly modify the net volume change of fluid-mediated reactions. Subduction focus the largest recycling of crustal carbonates and the most intense seismic activity on Earth. Nevertheless, the feedbacks between deep carbon mobilization and deformation remain poorly investigated. We present quantitative microstructural results from natural samples and thermodynamic modeling indicating that percolation of reducing fluids exerts strong control on the mobilization of carbon and on strain localization in subducted carbonate rocks. Fluid-mediated carbonate reduction progressed from discrete domains unaffected by ductile deformation into localized shear zones deforming via diffusion creep, dissolution-precipitation creep and grain boundary sliding. Grain-size reduction and creep cavitation along localized shear zones enhanced fluid-carbonate interactions and fluid channelization. These results indicate that reduction of carbonate rocks can exert an important positive feedback on strain localization and fluid channelization, with potential implications on seismic activity and transport of deep hydrocarbon-bearing fluids.

Fault zone structures and strain localization in clinoptilolite-tuff (Nižný Hrabovec, Slovak Republic)

Clinoptilolite is a natural micro-porous zeolite composed of silica and alumina tetrahedra that commonly forms as a devitrification product of glass in volcanic tuffs. Besides applications in the agriculture, building and manufacturing industries, clinoptilolite has been widely studied in veterinary and human medicine because of its positive effects on health. Based on field observations and microstructural investigations, we show, for the first time, strain localization features along faults in natural zeolite tuffs in a clinoptilolite-tuff open-pit mine at Nižný Hrabovec (Slovak Republic). The faults are localized along pre-existing joints with plumose structures that acted as a pathway for the infiltration of mainly Mn- and K-rich fluids. Displacement along the faults created structures that are indicative of both velocity hardening (accommodated by dissolution precipitation creep on SC/SCC′ foliation) and velocity weakening (accommodated by multi-generations of ultracataclasites along principal slip surfaces) behaviors. Rock-fluid interaction was characterized by a high-mobility of K-rich fluids, with K-feldspar decorating the SC/SCC′ foliation, infiltrating fractures in the damage zone of the faults and precipitating as idiomorphic crystals in open cavities and along the fault surface. Microstructures such as polished slickensides, injection of fluidized cataclasites, clast-cortex grains in cataclasites and truncated grains along principal slip surfaces probably suggest that at least some of the faults formed during seismic slip.

Pure shear-dominated transpression and vertical extrusion in a strike-slip fault splay from the Itapirapuã Shear Zone, Ribeira Belt, Brazil

The Itapirapuã Shear Zone is a major NE-trending dextral transcurrent zone from the southern Ribeira Belt (Brazil), which was active during the Neoproterozoic Brasiliano-Pan African Orogeny, related with West Gondwana assembly. Macroscopic sigmoid-shaped blocks in its northernmost splay termination present a NE-trending subvertical tectonic foliation and subvertical stretching lineation suggesting a transpressional tectonics. This paper investigates this splay termination using integration of data from geological mapping, thermodynamic modeling, microtectonics, quartz c-axis fabrics, kinematic vorticity and finite strain analysis. Distinct rock assemblages are placed in tectonic contacts along the splay termination, including Statherian sillimanite-biotite paragneiss and granitic orthogneiss (Apiaí-Mirim Complex), Statherian phyllites (Bairro dos Prestes Formation), Calymmian chlorite-epidote-actinolite metabasites (Fazenda Velha Suite), Ediacaran phyllites, metalimestone and quartzite (Itaiacoca Group) and Ediacaran granite (Três Córregos Suite). Isochemical phase diagrams constrain synkinematic metamorphic conditions of 490–510 °C and 11–12.5 kbar (chlorite-biotite-phengite phyllite), 520–560 °C and 9–10 kbar (biotite-phengite phyllite) and 680–690 °C and 5–6 kbar (sillimanite-biotite paragneiss), with isothermal decompression paths. Microstructural evidence suggests that increase in metamorphic temperatures were accompanied by changes in the dominant deformation mechanism in quartz aggregates from subgrain rotation to grain boundary migration recrystallization. Significant contribution of dissolution-precipitation creep indicates water-abundant deformational conditions. Strain ellipsoids are oblate-shaped and present NE-trending subvertical XY planes and subvertical X-axes in agreement with field tectonic fabric. Quartz c-axis fabrics in XZ sections of the strain ellipsoid are dominated by symmetrical crossed girdles, while the fabrics present dextral asymmetry in horizontal YZ sections, consistent with macroscopic structural deflection, indicating a subvertical vorticity axis. Vorticity results indicate 48–59% of pure shear contribution. The data indicate that strain in the Itapirapuã Shear Zone northern termination was accommodated by a pure shear-dominated transpression with vertical extrusion at mid-crustal conditions, which contrasts with a transtensional deformation in the southeastern block.

Deformation mechanisms in mafic amphibolites and granulites: record from the Semail metamorphic sole during subduction infancy

Abstract. This study sheds light on the deformation mechanisms of subducted mafic rocks metamorphosed at amphibolite and granulite facies conditions and on their importance for strain accommodation and localization at the top of the slab during subduction infancy. These rocks, namely metamorphic soles, are oceanic slivers stripped from the downgoing slab and accreted below the upper plate mantle wedge during the first million years of intraoceanic subduction, when the subduction interface is still warm. Their formation and intense deformation (i.e., shear strain ≥5) attest to a systematic and transient coupling between the plates over a restricted time span of ∼1 Myr and specific rheological conditions. Combining microstructural analyses with mineral chemistry constrains grain-scale deformation mechanisms and the rheology of amphibole and amphibolites along the plate interface during early subduction dynamics, as well as the interplay between brittle and ductile deformation, water activity, mineral change, grain size reduction and phase mixing. Results indicate that increasing pressure and temperature conditions and slab dehydration (from amphibolite to granulite facies) lead to the nucleation of mechanically strong phases (garnet, clinopyroxene and amphibole) and rock hardening. Peak conditions (850 ∘C and 1 GPa) coincide with a pervasive stage of brittle deformation which enables strain localization in the top of the mafic slab, and therefore possibly the unit detachment from the slab. In contrast, during early exhumation and cooling (from ∼850 down to ∼700 ∘C and 0.7 GPa), the garnet–clinopyroxene-bearing amphibolite experiences extensive retrogression (and fluid ingression) and significant strain weakening essentially accommodated in the dissolution–precipitation creep regime including heterogeneous nucleation of fine-grained materials and the activation of grain boundary sliding processes. This deformation mechanism is closely assisted with continuous fluid-driven fracturing throughout the exhumed amphibolite, which contributes to fluid channelization within the amphibolites. These mechanical transitions, coeval with detachment and early exhumation of the high-temperature (HT) metamorphic soles, therefore controlled the viscosity contrast and mechanical coupling across the plate interface during subduction infancy, between the top of the slab and the overlying peridotites. Our findings may thus apply to other geodynamic environments where similar temperatures, lithologies, fluid circulation and mechanical coupling between mafic rocks and peridotites prevail, such as in mature warm subduction zones (e.g., Nankai, Cascadia), in lower continental crust shear zones and oceanic detachments.

Deformation of feldspar at greenschist facies conditions – the record of mylonitic pegmatites from the Pfunderer Mountains, Eastern Alps

Abstract. Deformation microstructures of albitic plagioclase and K-feldspar were investigated in mylonitic pegmatites from the Austroalpine basement south of the western Tauern Window by polarized light microscopy, electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction to evaluate feldspar deformation mechanisms at greenschist facies conditions. The main mylonitic characteristics are alternating almost monophase quartz and albite layers, surrounding porphyroclasts of deformed feldspar and tourmaline. The dominant deformation microstructures of K-feldspar porphyroclasts are intragranular fractures at a high angle to the stretching lineation. The fractures are healed or sealed by polyphase aggregates of albite, K-feldspar, quartz and mica, which also occur along intragranular fractures of tourmaline and strain shadows around other porphyroclasts. These polyphase aggregates indicate dissolution–precipitation creep. K-feldspar porphyroclasts are partly replaced by albite characterized by a cuspate interface. This replacement is interpreted to take place by interface-coupled dissolution–precipitation driven by a solubility difference between K-feldspar and albite. Albite porphyroclasts are replaced at boundaries parallel to the foliation by fine-grained monophase albite aggregates of small strain-free new grains mixed with deformed fragments. Dislocation glide is indicated by bent and twinned albite porphyroclasts with internal misorientation. An indication of effective dislocation climb with dynamic recovery, for example, by the presence of subgrains, is systematically missing. We interpret the grain size reduction of albite to be the result of coupled dislocation glide and fracturing (low-temperature plasticity). Subsequent growth is by a combination of strain-induced grain boundary migration and formation of growth rims, resulting in an aspect ratio of albite with the long axis within the foliation. This strain-induced replacement by nucleation (associated dislocation glide and microfracturing) and subsequent growth is suggested to result in the observed monophase albite layers, probably together with granular flow. The associated quartz layers show characteristics of dislocation creep by the presence of subgrains, undulatory extinction and sutured grain boundaries. We identified two endmember matrix microstructures: (i) alternating layers of a few hundred micrometres' width, with isometric, fine-grained feldspar (on average 15 µm in diameter) and coarse-grained quartz (a few hundred micrometres in diameter), representing lower strain compared to (ii) alternating thin layers of some tens of micrometres' width composed of fine-grained quartz (&lt;20 µm in diameter) and coarse elongated albite grains (long axis of a few tens of micrometres) defining the foliation, respectively. Our observations indicate that grain size reduction by strain-induced replacement of albite (associated dislocation glide and microfracturing) followed by growth and granular flow simultaneous with dislocation creep of quartz are playing the dominating role in formation of the mylonitic microstructure.

Textural evolution during high-pressure dehydration of serpentinite to peridotite and its relation to stress orientations and kinematics of subducting slabs: Insights from the Almirez ultramafic massif

The Almirez ultramafic massif (SE Spain) preserves the transformation of high-P antigorite (Atg-) serpentinite to chlorite (Chl-) harzburgite (1.6–1.9 GPa; 680–710 °C), a metamorphic reaction that is the primary source of water at the intermediate depth of subducting slabs. We present a detailed μ-CT and EBSD study of oriented samples across the Atg-serpentinite dehydration isograd to investigate the textural evolution during serpentinite dehydration to peridotite and its relation to stress orientations and the kinematics of subducting slabs.Above the Atg-out isograd, Atg-serpentinite shows a prograde mylonitic foliation and a weak Shape Preferred Orientation (SPO) of oxide aggregates defining a N—S stretching lineation. The antigorite Crystal Preferred Orientation (CPO) is characterized by [001]Atg perpendicular to the foliation, and the poles to (100)Atg and (010)Atg distributed in a girdle-like symmetry with [100]Atg nearly parallel to the stretching lineation. The antigorite microstructure and CPO are consistent with deformation by dislocation creep, twinning, and dissolution-precipitation creep. These textures record the long-term shear deformation near the slab interface where the main compressive stress, σ1, was at an acute angle to the foliation.Below the Atg-out isograd, Atg-serpentinite dehydrated to unfoliated, coarse-grainedChl-harzburgite with granofels or spinifex textures distributed in alternating decameter-sized lenses. Crystallization of granofels and spinifex Chl-harzburgite records, respectively, a sequence of slow and fast fluid draining events during serpentinite dehydration under the same orientation of the principal stresses that resulted in the shear deformation of the Atg-serpentinite. Both textural types exhibit coarse-grained textures with systematic mineral CPOs and SPOs and microstructures without evidence of major ductile deformation. The texture of the granofels Chl-harzburgite formed by a topotactic dehydration reaction after Atg-serpentinite coupled to compaction leading to an olivine layering subparallel to the Atg-serpentinite foliation. The olivines of granofels Chl-harzburgite are rounded and display a weak CPO that can be accounted for by the topotactic reaction 〈100〉Atg||〈100〉Ol and (001)Atg||(010)Ol after Atg-serpentinite. Similarly, orthopyroxene shows a marked CPO consistent with the topotactic reaction (100)Opx||(001)Atg and [001]Opx||[100]Atg.Spinifex Chl-harzburgite displays systematic mineral SPO and CPO. Spinifex olivines are tabular on (100)Ol and elongated along [001]Ol (c > b >> a), and define a ESE–WNW platelet lineation. The average texture is characterized by [001]Ol,Opx subparallel to a strong ESE–WNW oxide aggregate lineation, and [100]Ol,Opx and [001]Ol,Opx within a plane of similar orientation to the Atg-serpentinite foliation. The SPOs and CPOs of spinifex Chl-harzburgites are composed of up to four orientation populations of tabular olivines, where one population is volumetrically dominant in all samples. Relative to the main orientation population, the CPO of olivine shows clustered distribution of [100]Ol and [010]Ol maxima rotated at systematic angles around [001]Ol. These clustered CPOs and SPOs show a remarkable correlation with the orientation of the principal paleostresses. The preponderant orientation population of tabular olivines lies on the plane of maximum compression (σ2–σ3 plane) and has [010]Ol and its (100)Ol tabular faces nearly perpendicular to the Atg-serpentinite foliation. This population can be accounted for by oriented growth of platy crystals perpendicular to σ1. The other populations lie in the plane perpendicular to the least compressive stress (σ3) and the planes of maximum shear. The driving force and causes for the oriented crystallization of tabular olivine in these planes is uncertain, but their correlation with paleostresses suggests a cause-effect relationship.Spinifex and granofels Chl-harzburgites show a marked ESE–WNW oxide aggregate lineation that differs in orientation from that of Atg-serpentinite and is approximately parallel to the intermediate compressive stress (σ2). These lineations and the platelet lineation of spinifex Chl-harzburgite may be due to along-strike fluid flow below the permeability barrier that constituted the Atg-out dehydration isograd. Our study shows that the kinematics of the slab, paleostresses, and fluid flow exert a dynamic control on the textures of Atg-serpentinite dehydrating to peridotite in subducting slabs.

Replacement reactions and deformation by dissolution and precipitation processes in amphibolites

AbstractThe deformation of the middle to lower crust in collisional settings occurs via deformation mechanisms that vary with rock composition, fluid content, pressure, and temperature. These mechanisms are responsible for the accommodation of large tectonic transport distances during nappe stacking and exhumation. Here, we show that fracturing and fluid flow triggered coupled dissolution–precipitation and dissolution–precipitation creep processes, which were responsible for the formation of a mylonitic microstructure in amphibolites. This fabric is developed over a crustal thickness &gt;500 m in the Lower Seve Nappe (Scandinavian Caledonides). Amphibolites display a mylonitic foliation that wraps around albite porphyroclasts appearing dark in panchromatic cathodoluminescence (CL). The albite porphyroclasts were dissected and fragmented by fractures preferentially developed along the (001) cleavage planes and display lobate edges with embayments and peninsular features. Two albite/oligoclase generations, bright in CL, resorbed and overgrew the porphyroclasts, sealing the fractures. Electron backscattered diffraction shows that the two albite/oligoclase generations grew both pseudomorphically and topotaxially at the expense of the albite porphyroclasts and epitaxially around them. These two albite/oligoclase generations also grew as neoblasts elongated parallel to the mylonitic foliation. The amphibole crystals experienced a similar microstructural evolution, as evidenced by corroded ferrohornblende cores surrounded by ferrotschermakite rims that preserve the same crystallographic orientation of the cores. Misorientation maps highlight how misorientations in amphibole are related to displacement along fractures perpendicular to its c‐axis. No crystal plasticity is observed in either mineral species. Plagioclase and amphibole display a crystallographic preferred orientation that is the result of topotaxial growth on parental grains and nucleation of new grains with a similar crystallographic orientation. Amphibole and plagioclase thermobarometry constrains the mylonitic foliation development to the epidote amphibolite facies (˜600°C, 0.75–0.97 GPa). Our results demonstrate that at middle to lower crustal levels, the presence of H2O‐rich fluid at grain boundaries facilitates replacement reactions by coupled dissolution–precipitation and favours deformation by dissolution–precipitation creep over dislocation creep in plagioclase and amphibole.

Syn-kinematic hydration reactions, grain size reduction, and dissolution–precipitation creep in experimentally deformed plagioclase–pyroxene mixtures

Abstract. It is widely observed that mafic rocks are able to accommodate high strains by viscous flow. Yet, a number of questions concerning the exact nature of the involved deformation mechanisms continue to be debated. In this contribution, rock deformation experiments on four different water-added plagioclase–pyroxene mixtures are presented: (i) plagioclase(An60–70)–clinopyroxene–orthopyroxene, (ii) plagioclase(An60)–diopside, (iii) plagioclase(An60)–enstatite, and (iv) plagioclase(An01)–enstatite. Samples were deformed in general shear at strain rates of 3×10−5 to 3×10−6 s−1, 800 °C, and confining pressure of 1.0 or 1.5 GPa. Results indicate that dissolution–precipitation creep (DPC) and grain boundary sliding (GBS) are the dominant deformation mechanisms and operate simultaneously. Coinciding with sample deformation, syn-kinematic mineral reactions yield abundant nucleation of new grains; the resulting intense grain size reduction is considered crucial for the activity of DPC and GBS. In high strain zones dominated by plagioclase, a weak, nonrandom, and geometrically consistent crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) is observed. Usually, a CPO is considered a consequence of dislocation creep, but the experiments presented here demonstrate that a CPO can develop during DPC and GBS. This study provides new evidence for the importance of DPC and GBS in mid-crustal shear zones within mafic rocks, which has important implications for understanding and modeling mid-crustal rheology and flow.

Comparison of brittle- and viscous creep in quartzites: Implications for semi-brittle flow of rocks

The co-existence and interaction between brittle and viscous deformation processes contributes to the integrated strength of the crust and results in a wide range of energy-release mechanisms ranging from earthquakes to creep. Here, we compare flow laws derived for quartz-rich rocks deforming by brittle creep, wet dislocation power-law creep and dissolution-precipitation creep. We investigate theoretically the conditions when both brittle and viscous processes contribute significantly to deformation provided that all processes act independently and in parallel. Utilizing a comprehensive data set for deformation experiments in quartz-rich rocks, we find that the transition between deformation mechanisms is strongly dependent on input variables such as initial flaw size and grain size. The transition can occur abruptly or over hundreds of MPa in differential stress and hundreds of degrees Kelvin at a constant strain rate. The transition is strongly dependent on grain-size and confining pressure. Limitations to this work are first that all three flow laws are poorly constrained by experimental data for conditions relevant for the comparison. Secondly, a need exists for new experiments to infill the knowledge gaps between high-temperature and low-temperature deformation experiments and deriving quantitative flow laws for low-temperature plasticity and high-temperature brittle creep.

Deformation at low and high stress-loading rates

In an extensional shear zone in the Talea Ori, Crete, quartz veins occur in high-pressure low-temperature metamorphic sediments at sites of dilation along shear band boundaries, kink band boundaries and boudin necks. Bent elongate grains grown epitactically from the host rock with abundant fluid inclusion trails parallel to the vein wall indicate vein formation by crack-seal increments during dissolution-precipitation creep of the host rock. The presence of sutured high-angle grain boundaries and subgrains shows that temperatures were sufficiently high for recovery and strain-induced grain boundary migration, i.e. higher than 300–350 °C, close to peak metamorphic conditions. The generally low amount of strain accumulated by dislocation creep in quartz of the host rock and most veins indicates low bulk stress conditions of a few tens of MPa on a long term. The time scale of stress-loading to cause cyclic cracking and sealing is assumed to be lower than the Maxwell relaxation time of the metasediments undergoing dissolution-precipitation creep at high strain rates (10−10 s−1 to 10−9 s−1), which is on the order of hundred years. In contrast, some veins discordant or concordant to the foliation show heterogeneous quartz microstructures with micro-shear zones, sub-basal deformation lamellae, short-wavelength undulatory extinction and recrystallized grains restricted to high strain zones. These microstructures indicate dislocation glide-controlled crystal-plastic deformation (low-temperature plasticity) at transient high stresses of a few hundred MPa with subsequent recovery and strain-induced grain boundary migration at relaxing stresses and temperatures of at least 300–350 °C. High differential stresses in rocks at greenschist-facies conditions that relieve stress by creep on the long term, requires fast stress-loading rates, presumably by seismic activity in the overlying upper crust. The time scale for stress loading is controlled by the duration of the slip event along a fault, i.e. a few seconds to minutes. This study demonstrates that microstructures can distinguish between deformation at internal low stress-loading rates (to tens of MPa on a time scale of hundred years) and high (coseismic) stress-loading rates to a few hundred MPa on a time scale of minutes.

Experimental investigation of the brittle-viscous transition in mafic rocks – Interplay between fracturing, reaction, and viscous deformation

Rock deformation experiments are performed on fault gouge fabricated from ‘Maryland Diabase’ rock powder to investigate the transition from dominant brittle to dominant viscous behaviour. At the imposed strain rates of γ˙=3·10−5−3·10−6 s−1, the transition is observed in the temperature range of (600 °C < T < 800 °C) at confining pressures of (0.5 GPa ≤ Pc ≤ 1.5 GPa). The transition thereby takes place by a switch from brittle fracturing and cataclastic flow to viscous dissolution-precipitation creep and grain boundary sliding. Mineral reactions and resulting grain size refinement by nucleation are observed to be critical processes for the switch to viscous deformation, i.e., grain size sensitive creep. In the transitional regime, the mechanical response of the sample is a mixed-mode between brittle and viscous rheology and microstructures associated with both brittle and viscous deformation are observed. As grain size reduction by reaction and nucleation is a time dependent process, the brittle-viscous transition is not only a function of T but to a large extent also of microstructural evolution.

B-type olivine fabric induced by low temperature dissolution creep during serpentinization and deformation in mantle wedge

The B-type olivine fabric (i.e., the [010] axes subnormal to foliation and the [001] axes subparallel to the lineation) has been regarded as an important olivine fabric for interpreting global trench-parallel S-wave polarization in fore-arc regions. However, strong serpentinization and cold temperature environment in the mantle wedge should inhibit development of the B-type olivine fabric that requires high temperature to activate solid-state plastic deformation. Here we report fabrics of olivine and antigorite generated at low temperatures (300–370°C) during serpentinization in a fossil mantle wedge of the Val Malenco area, Central Alps. Olivine in the serpentine matrix develops a pronounced B-type fabric, while antigorite in the same matrix displays a strong crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) with the (001) planes and the [010] axes subparallel to foliation and lineation, respectively. The following evidence leads to the conclusion that the B-type olivine fabric results from dissolution creep assisted by grain boundary sliding (GBS) and grain rotation, rather than solid-state plastic deformation: (1) serpentinization took place at low temperatures and a fluid-enriched environment, ideal for dissolution-precipitation creep; (2) the voids and zigzag boundaries along the interface between antigorite and olivine suggest a fluid dissolution reaction; (3) the primary coarse olivine develops a nearly random fabric, indicating the B-type fabrics in the fine-grained olivine may not be inherited fabrics. These results document for the first time the B-type olivine CPO formed by dissolution creep at low temperatures during serpentinization and provide a mechanism to reconcile petrofabric observations with geophysical observations of trench parallel fast S-wave seismic anisotropy in fore-arc mantle wedge regions.
