Towards the Study of Political Text and Translation in Thailand: A Case Study of Thai Translations of Biden’s Inaugural Address

The existing literature concerning the translation of political discourse in Thailand remains limited. To encourage more research in this area, this paper proposes a model for analysing the translation of political texts in the Thai context. Drawing upon Munday’s (2012, 2018) appraisal approach to translation and Schäffner’s (2004, 2012) analysis of the political context around translation, this paper offers a two-level methodology for investigating the Thai-English and English-Thai translation of political texts. The case of US President Biden’s 2021 inaugural address was chosen for testing the model. The findings reveal that the two Thai news agencies translated only some parts of the speech, resulting in a selective re-presentation of Biden’s political discourse. The ideological presentations of the two Thai versions are strikingly different: one representing a faithful portrayal of the original standpoint and the other with a stronger attitude in numerous ideology-laden terms. This paper also discusses the epitextual and contextual elements of the translations in question.

Natural Language Processing is a subset of Artificial Intelligence. The field of natural language processing (NLP) is concerned with the understanding and translation of human discourse into machine-readable language. NLP allows machines to interpret and accomplish tasks based on written or spoken content. Natural language processing (NLP) has garnered a lot of attention recently because of its computational representation and analysis of human discourse. It has spread its applications in Medical and Business such as Sentiment Analysis, Language Translation, Text Extraction and Chatbot etc. In this we critically overtook on History and Methodologies of Natural Language Processing.

On the issue of the political discourse translation methodology

The article is focused upon the challenges of the political discourse translation methodology. The overview of the key works in the field of theory and practice of translation has allowed to distinguish the correlation between the stylistic peculiarities and translation strategy, tactics and operations. It has been outlined that challenges for adequate political discourse translation are evoked by genre discrepancy, the issue of the rendering such peculiar vocabulary items as realia, nationally colored phraseological unities and fusions, as well as proverbs and sayings. The objective of the research is seen as the search of efficient methods and techniques aimed at optimizing the quality of political discourse translation in the paradigm of the communicative and functional approach. The urgency of the study is proved by the growing demand for the qualified political discourse translation both on the external international and internal domestic policy levels. The criterion of the trustworthiness and political tolerance is especially upto-date in the view of the recent political situation in the world in general and in Ukraine in particular. The role of the qualified political discourse translation for the political future of Ukraine can’t be overestimated. The mission of translators and their duty is to perform adequate, faithful and qualified translation of all sort of political speeches, disputes, negotiations and agendas from Ukrainian into English and other foreign languages to give the world the idea of the essence of both social and political life in the country. The power of speech and language means is sometimes stronger than the power of weapon. The findings of the research may be of great value for future translators training and self-education. The perspective is seen in working out the methodology of publicist and scientific discourses translation in the aspect of the globalization of Ukrainian culture and science international distribution.

The National Health Policy for International Migrants in Chile, 2014–17

At the global level, the equal recognition of migrant rights is among the most important challenges for modern society. This chapter aims to analyse the formulation and implementation processes of the National Health Policy for International Migrants in Chile (NHPIM), as well as its short-term results, from 2014 to 2017. It is based on a review of the literature on and deriving from the consultative processes performed in communities with high mobility and residency rates for international migrants, and key documents related to the Policy. It analyses public sector health coverage from the National Health Fund of Chile (Fondo Nacional de Salud, or FONASA), health service usage, and fulfilment of health needs, comparing the general Chilean population to the migrant population in Chile using data from the National Socioeconomic Characterization Survey (CASEN Survey) from 2013, 2015 and 2017.The formulation of the NHPIM was a response to evidence generated through consultation and social participation. It eliminated legislative and legal barriers, and favoured financial protection through coverage by FONASA. Over the period analysed, the number of migrants with FONASA coverage doubled (from 243,000 to 506,000); the rate of healthcare service usage increased (from 0.81 to 1.36 per 100 migrants); the rate of hospital discharges remained steady (3.2 per 100 migrants), although the net number of discharges doubled; and the proportion of migrant hospital discharges without FONASA coverage fell from 25.5 per cent to 7.8 per cent. The protection of the right to health for international migrants in Chile is a prime example of the effective translation of political discourse into concrete social practice.

C-E Translation of Political Discourse: Perspective of Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance—A Case Study on the Report of the 19th National Congress of the CPC

This paper, by the contrastive case study on Chinese source text and its English version of the report of the 19th national congress of the communist party of China (CPC), means to demonstrate and testify the properness in choice of words and expressions as well as the consistency in meaning with the source in translation from the perspectives of faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance. In general, it is characterized by six parts, namely introduction, the distinctiveness of the political discourse, the Chinese traditional translation theory, the characteristics of the report, the contrastive case study and conclusion.

Political Discourse and Translation Studies. A Bibliometric Analysis in International Core Journals

This study provides a bibliometric analysis of political discourse in translation studies based on the Web of Science (WoS) database from 1990 to 2020. It adopts a guiding procedure integrating the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines into the bibliometric standard workflow and using VOSviewer as the visualization tool. With the help of the built-in WoS analysis tools, the annual publication trends and the most influential productive countries are examined. VOSviewer is used to explore the influential sources in the field, research themes, cited references and their intersections with other references, cited sources and their links to other sources, and most frequently cited authors. The co-occurrence analysis of keywords distinguishes eight research themes, namely, linguistic analysis, ideology and manipulation, power embodied in political communication, interpreting and critical discourse analysis (CDA), the recontextualization of political discourse in media discourse, diplomatic translation, the representation of political speeches in news translation, and conflict and politics. The co-citation analysis of the cited references focuses on discourse analysis models, research approaches, and theoretical frameworks. The co-citation of sources suggests that interdisciplinary features characterize political discourse translation studies, interacting with other disciplines through fields such as pragmatics, discourse analysis, and communication research.

The Idiolect of Ernestine de Champourcin in Terms of Cultural Accommodation

This article is devoted to the idiolect of Ernestina de Champourcin, a contemporary of the Generation-27, an iconic group of Spanish poets of the 20th century. The authors propose is to consider the poetess's idiolect in the aspect of cultural accommodation beyond the traditional translation discourse, through the analysis of two poetry collections - Presencia a oscuras and Primer exilio which stand at the turn of two stages of Ernestina de Champourcin's creative work. The authors analyse the aesthetic, cognitive and linguistic vectors of the poet's idiolect and systematise the reasons for its dynamics. On the basis of the comparative analysis of the elements of the poetic idiolect of her works of different periods, the authors note that the idiolect evolves in accordance with the conditions created by cultural accommodation, and therefore the consideration of cultural accommodation is possible not only in the context of translation adequacy and equivalence, but also chronologically, at the level of idiolect, as evidenced, in particular, by the use of regional variations of lexical units, syntax and the prevalence of this or that temporal plane. The analysis of idiolect makes it possible to narrow the perspective of the material under study, and thus represents the first link of the work on poetic translation. It is argued that the translation of a poetic text is impossible without considering the internal cultural accommodation of the idiolect, which takes place according to the cultural accommodation of the individual and independently of the translation. Based on their analysis, the authors emphasize the role of idiolect as a key factor in the studies devoted to the chronological description of the creative formation of any poet.

It has been a trend in translation and interpreting studies that the object of investigation is more viewed as a socio-cultural activity where the translators and interpreters are inevitably a cultural and ideological mediator rather than just a linguistic and communicative one. Against this backdrop, Binghua Wang and Jeremy Munday, in their edited book, Advances in discourse analysis of translation and interpreting: Linking linguistic approaches with socio-cultural interpretation, explore the connection between the linguistic and textual features on the micro level of analysis, and the social and cultural functions on the macro one. The presented article is devoted to the problem of cultural transfer during the translation of various discourses (artistic, scientific, technical and media discourse). It systematizes the views on translation after the «cultural turn», explains the emergence of the term of «translatology» as a science of translation in conjuction with ist extralingual reality and provides an interpretation of culture within this discipline. In addition, the idea of ​​cultural translation as a hybrid space has been formed, with loyally coexisting representatives of different cultures. In contrast to multiculturalism, transculturalism is considered as a common phenomenon of cultural contamination in todayʼs globalized world. The article outlines realities and their types as culturally specific words and untranslatable terms, as well as explains the presence of respective concepts in a linguistic culture, the absence of which causes lacunae in other linguistic and conceptual pictures of the world. In literary translation, it is worth determining what to translate in order to spread own culture abroad and enrich the achievements of world literature, as well as taking into account artisticality in the work, because what is said is not always intended by the author. Translation problems in media discourse are represented by a large number of neoplasms, as this type of discourse responds quickly to world events and provides them with a description or evaluation. A separate factor in the transmission of culture is the media discourse as a discourse of manipulation causes specific translational difficulties. The article represents the peculiarities of culture transmission in the professional literature, which is reflected in terms of the legislation features and other social sectors of the nation.

Are Ellipses Important for Machine Translation?

AbstractThis article describes an experiment to evaluate the impact of different types of ellipses discussed in theoretical linguistics on Neural Machine Translation (NMT), using English to Hindi/Telugu as source and target languages. Evaluation with manual methods shows that most of the errors made by Google NMT are located in the clause containing the ellipsis, the frequency of such errors is slightly more in Telugu than Hindi, and the translation adequacy shows improvement when ellipses are reconstructed with their antecedents. These findings not only confirm the importance of ellipses and their resolution for MT, but also hint toward a possible correlation between the translation of discourse devices like ellipses with the morphological incongruity of the source and target. We also observe that not all ellipses are translated poorly and benefit from reconstruction, advocating for a disparate treatment of different ellipses in MT research.

ВІЙСЬКОВИЙ ДИСКУРС ТА ОСОБЛИВОСТІ ЙОГО ПЕРЕКЛАДУ

This article considers the concept and essence of the phenomenon of military discourse, reveals its structural features. The author focuses on the peculiarities of the functioning of military terms in the English military discourse, analyzes the general features of the translation of military discourse. The main translation transformations in the translation of military discourse were studied; the specifics of the transformation of English naval and air terminology in the Ukrainian translation were researched. After analyzing the terminological units in the sample of 230 cases of translation transformations, we can conclude that the most frequent type of translation transformation of military terminology from English into Ukrainian are the use of lexical translation transformations, in particular, calque (26 cases, or 11.3 %), transliteration (20 cases, or 8.7 %), lexical-semantic substitutions (52 cases, or 22.6 %), concretization of meaning (26 cases, or 11.3 %), generalization of meaning (16 cases, or 7 %), modulation (32 cases, or 13.9 %). Regarding grammatical transformations in the translation of military texts, the frequency of their use is as follows: grammatical substitutions (6 cases, or 2.6 %), sentence fragmentation (5 cases, or 2.2 %), sentence integration (3 cases, or 1.3 %), permutations (12 cases, or 5.2 %), zero translation (16 cases, or 7 %). Also, for the translation of military texts were used such translation methods as half-calque (2 cases, or 0.9 %); interpretation (3 cases, or 1.3 %); elimination (4 cases, or 1.7 %); explication (7 cases, or 3 %). As a rule, foreign terms have corresponding equivalents in the language of translation, therefore such receptions, as synonymous substitutions, descriptive translation, are used only in those cases when in the language of translation, the corresponding term is absent.

Historical and translation discourse of Abay in the ethnopedagogic paradigm: features of Analy

The article is devoted to the study of Abay's creativity as a historical precedent personality in the context of his ethnopedagogical, historical and translation discourses. Purpose of the work: identifying the essence of Abay's main discourses, analyzing them, determining the contribution of the precedent personality to the historical process of the formation of ethno-identity, as well as clarifying the degree of precedence of the personality and his texts. In the process of analysis, a complex method was used, based on the combination of discursive-historical, cognitive-discursive, and pragmatic-communicative approaches, the method of sociological survey. The results obtained include: description of Abay as a precedent historical personality, widely known for his legislative, social and political activities; a comprehensive analysis of the historical discourse of Abay, the discourse of biy (in Kazakh language), its extralinguistic, cognitive, pragmatic, linguo-stylistic components have been identified and described; the historical character of Abay's translation discourses is established, a comprehensive analysis of such a discourse is carried out, the precedent of the text of Abay's translations is noted. It is concluded that Abay Kunanbaev not only acted as an active historical person who managed to influence the actualization of historical events and their promotion, but also as a poet, translator, who created various discourses (historical, translation, literary). Abay's translation discourse acts as a kind of historical discourse - historical and literary discourse, since it has signs of historicity (created by a historical person, it reflects the features of the historical era). Therefore, these discourses can be analyzed based on a complex discursive-historical and cognitive-discursive approaches.

The Ways of Gastronomic Discourse Translation (On the Example of Culinary Recipes)

This article is devoted to the peculiarities of the culinary recipes translation using the recipes of Jamie Oliver’s. Gastronomic discourse is a reflection of the fundamental physiological need of a person, while language serves to realize the national-specific characteristics of the people. Within this article, methods of transferring culinary recipes from English into Russian are considered, as well as the translation transformations that the translator uses when translating. Considerable attention is paid to specific examples and identification of their translation specifics.

Discourse and Communication Translation Model and Translation Strategy: an Experimental Study

A longitudinal mediated asynchronous procedural experimental study is presented, the purpose of which is to demonstrate the correlation between the discourse and communication translation model and the translation strategy. Subjects’ retrospective self- and peer commentaries are analyzed. It is shown that the subjects’ evaluation of translation solutions implemented in the target text is based on their own translations and translating objectives, as reflected both in the self- and peer commentaries. The following translation dominants are revealed by the experiment: target text audience (recipient); source text style; source text type (genre), target text type (genre); individual linguistic features of the target text; discourse goals; discourse nodal points; discourse values; communication functions; typical properties of communication; and communication strategies. It is demonstrated that the discourse and communication translation model has a positive effect on the consistency and the degree of detail of source text analysis, and allows translators to make more informed decisions. It is noted that if changes in the target text are mainly caused by the translator’s decision to make corrections when re-accessing the text, these changes reflect the described translation dominants. It is shown that the model indirectly affects the quality of translation, depending on the degree of implementation of the translation strategy, taking the additional factors into account.

Cognitive and Semiotic Model of Translation

The paper aims to give a comprehensive cognitive and semiotic analysis of translation strategies implied in the translation of the film “Darkest Hour”. Regarding a film as a communicative process mediated by certain semiotic features makes it possible to analyze the semiotic character of film discourse in translation. Thus, it was decided that translation is not just a speech-oriented process but a communicative act taking place within a definite semiotic space in a cross-cultural perspective. The semiotic model of cinematic discourse has a complicated structure and is analyzed based on semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic criteria. The choice of the semiotic system primarily depends on the communicative situation and its recipients. As the semiotic system of the film “Darkest Hour” is both socioculturally and situationally conditioned, the translator reconstructed the sense of the source language text by implying the translation transformations that assured the accuracy and adequacy of its translation into the target language text.

The article considers the specific character of modern translation discourse, trends and opportunities of realization in the era of changes and global challenges. The relevance of the article is determined by the need to establish common and distinctive forms of expression and formats of translation discourse. The representative sources of three communicatively active discursive practices constitute the empirical base of the paper: scientific / translation studies translation discourse; professional / industry translation discourse; didactic translation discourse. The textual material of the discourse under consideration is analyzed in order to identify thematic dominants of three subtypes under consideration. The similarities and differences of the topics discussed by the translation community within the framework of the selected discursive practices are determined. Sources of translation discourse in Russian and German linguistic cultures were also involved in the analysis to identify common and distinctive features. The analysis revealed the tendency of the Russian-language translation discourse to be a more profound scientific search and substantiation of translation problems, and, on the contrary, the tendency of the German- and English-language discourses to discuss applied issues. The analyzed subtypes of translation discourse reveal certain unifying features: current challenges reaction rapidity, new phenomena and trends in society. However, these subtypes have translation tools of their own, traditions and formats that shape thematic dominants of each direction of the discourse. Thus, the paper revealed the dynamic nature of the discourse, on the one hand, and its sustainable development, on the other.

Classroom Translation of Tabib's Poem: A Practical Model for Analysis and Evaluation of Poetry Discourse Translation

Poetry Translation is a high-quality open access translation of classical texts by famous poets, the characteristics of poetry can be based on sound, syntax, structure or pragmatics. In addition to text transformation, poetic translation is concerned with the perception, discourse and action of and between people and textual agents in a material and social context. A public poetry translation project generally aims to feature one or more poets. Poetry translators are interested in interpreting the meaning layers of the source poem, they rely on reliability to judge this and produce a poem in the target language that is readable and pleasing to the literary text. They are responsible for making their writing easy to understand. The reader is also responsible for understanding the translator's translation. The possible solutions to these problems are collaboration between authors and translators. This article highlights the challenges associated with translating poetry. Although poetry makes up only a small percentage of the world's translation output, case studies and examples from poetry have dominated theoretical construction in translation studies to the detriment of genres translated more often.

Did You Try Our Good Smoked Ham? Assessing the Quality of Translation as Cross-Cultural Mediation on Croatian Tourist Board Websites

Tourist discourse has been recognized as a specialized type of cross-cultural communication. Thus, successful translation of tourist texts assumes that translators act as cross-cultural mediators on a number of levels. The rather low quality of translation in the tourism sector has been pointed out by several Translation Studies scholars. However, not much systematic empirical research on the quality of translation in this sector has been carried out. This paper analyses a corpus of multilingual websites produced by Croatian tourist boards. In the analysis of the data I rely on the criteria for assessing translation quality of web translation developed by Pierini (2007), and place a special focus on the achievement of pragmatic level equivalence between source and target texts as a major criterion of successful cross-cultural communication in the translation of tourism discourse.
