Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) is one of the mostimportant solanaceous vegetable crop of sub-tropics andtropics having diploid chromosome number 2n=2x=24.It is a versatile crop adapted to different agro-climaticregions and can be grown throughout the year. India isregarded as the primary centre of origin/diversity of brinjal(Bhaduri 1951 and Vavilov 1931). In India, brinjaloccupies an area of 6.69 lakh hectare with estimatedannual production of 12.4 million tonnes in 2016-17. InUttar Pradesh, brinjal is being cultivated on an area of7.83 thousand ha with annual production of 0.269 milliontones (NHB 2016-17). Brinjal has Ayurvedic medicinalproperties. It has also been recommended as an excellentremedy for liver complaints and diabetic patients (Tiwariet al. 2009).
