Integrating community Live Reviews into academic publishing: an exploratory study.

Academic peer review is fundamental for scientific knowledge dissemination, and various initiatives are exploring how the peer review process could be more open, efficient and rewarding. We report an exploratory study where a live community-based review approach was integrated into the editorial workflow of an academic journal (Current Research in Neurobiology; CRNEUR). This study was conducted with five manuscripts ('cases') submitted as preprints, which underwent Live Review-a structured collaborative review session led by PREreview, an organization with the mission to advance equity and openness in scholarly evaluation. With each case, PREreview team members facilitated a 90-min online discussion where registered participants provided real-time discussion and worked together on the online structured peer review document. Authors could join as observers or to answer questions. Participants then volunteered to write up the session notes into a final review and summary statement. Review participants had the option to sign the review. The finalized review was then published on PREreview's open preprint review platform approximately two weeks after the Live Review session, and it was assigned a CC BY 4.0 license and Digital Object Identifier (DOI) linked to the DOI of the reviewed preprint allowing reviewers to be recognized for their contribution. The published review was then incorporated into CRNEUR's editorial workflow to inform editorial decisions and manuscript outcomes. We quantified the speed to first and final editorial decision of the community review (n = 5) in comparison to a larger sample (n = 27) of articles that went through a standard review process at CRNEUR during the same timeframe. First decision times in days after manuscript submission of the Live Reviews were within the Inter Quartile Range (IQR) of the standard review process (community review: median = 75, IQR: 41.3; standard review: median 92, IQR: 41.5), as were final decision times (community review: median 138, IQR: 22.5; standard review: median 211, IQR: 166.0). A survey of the Live Review attendees (n = 13; 30% response rate) on a scale of 1 'Highly Disagree' to 5 'Highly Agree' showed median 'Agree' to 'Highly Agree' scores on several questions including the review being respectful, time efficient and scientifically rigorous (median scores: 5, 4, 4, respectively). The innovative Live Review approach was as efficient as the standard review process in the journal and was rated positively by those surveyed. The small sample size inherent to exploratory studies limits conclusions generalizing to larger sample sizes. We discuss how live, community-based review approaches could be further developed, scaled and sustained.

Crediting and citing Indigenous Knowledges within research

Knowledge exchanges between Indigenous and scientific communities occur regularly, with researchers frequently seeking and benefiting from Indigenous Knowledge holders. These exchanges inherently demonstrate the value and authority of Indigenous Knowledges within academia; however, the traditional academic system lacks formal processes for crediting and citing such Knowledges. Given the complexity, diversity, and uniqueness of Indigenous cultures around the world, different approaches to assigning appropriate credit are required for different cultural groups—there is no “one size fits all” approach. In Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) communities have knowledge traditions reaching back millennia, with high diversity in knowledge reproduction, partitioning, access, and governance among nations. We demonstrate the complexity of crediting and citing Indigenous Knowledges across Australia, so that other regions of the world can adapt to their own contexts; the structural complexity of First Nations groups requires careful, considered, and context-specific approaches. In this Perspective, we highlight important components that should be considered and implemented when citing Indigenous Knowledges, with the aim of supporting discussion within relevant communities. Prior to citing Indigenous Knowledges, certain prerequisites must be established and met: (i) clear definitions of “Knowledges” and free, prior, and informed consent that is neither constrained nor coerced, (ii) an established relationship between the relevant First Nations group and the researchers (the latter being either non-Indigenous or Indigenous), (iii) a clear understanding of the two-way benefits of the Knowledge transfer, (iv) an acknowledgement that citation does not replace co-authorship and the legal rights the latter confers, (v) acknowledgement that Indigenous Knowledges are dynamic, including the ways that Knowledge holders want to exercise sovereignty over their data and resources, and (vi) institutional infrastructure to support the citation process. Crediting approaches must also be available to account for heterogeneity within and across First Nations groups, such as different authorities of Knowledges, “Country” itself as an authority, as well as gendered, initiated, sensitive, or sacred Knowledges. Maintaining autonomy is essential—First Nations groups must retain the ability to retract shared information if they so desire. As such, the accompanying digital object identifier (DOI) or data repository holding the cited information must be managed within the relevant country (here, Australia) or by an organization that can meet these requirements. A homogeneous citation solution within Australia, or elsewhere, seems unlikely and potentially undermines the celebrated diversity among First Nations. We therefore suggest the development of a dynamic citation protocol, where a decision tree can assist researchers in partnering with First Nations communities to cite information in ways that support the data sovereignty aspirations of First Nations peoples, rather than a static citation protocol. Although elevating the status of Indigenous Knowledges within academia, the citation process also provides the opportunity to enhance transparency and deepen relationships between researchers and First Nations Knowledge holders in Australia and globally.

A generalist institutional data repository offering both open and restricted access to support NIH data sharing compliance.

In response to the 2023 NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis launched Digital Commons Data@Becker, a generalist institutional data repository supporting both open and restricted access to research data. Managed by Bernard Becker Medical Library's DMS Team, the repository offers a fully mediated curation workflow that guides researchers through consultation, metadata capture, documentation, and quality control. Draft Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) can be issued once access type is determined, with final DOI publication following curation and QC. Restricted datasets require Human Research Protection Office (HRPO) review and Data Transfer and Use Agreements (DTUAs), while open access datasets are freely downloadable. The repository leverages persistent identifiers such as Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID iDs), Research Organization Registry (ROR) IDs, and DOIs, along with the DataCite metadata schema and custom metadata fields. Since its launch in 2023, Digital Commons Data@Becker has published 30 datasets spanning biomedical imaging, sequencing, quantitative assays, flow cytometry, and qualitative survey data. Across all datasets, there have been 4,409 views and 4,120 files downloaded, with restricted datasets generating 13 access requests, three of which were granted through DTUAs. Researchers emphasize the value of free institutional curation, flexible access models, and rapid DOI assignment. Digital Commons Data@Becker demonstrates how a generalist institutional data repository can balance accessibility and security to support NIH compliance, while advancing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data sharing and long-term stewardship.

Substandard Retraction Handling Practices and Their Consequences: Investigating 51 Emerald Journals and Their Retracted Articles

Retractions play a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the scientific record by correcting the literature and alerting readers to unreliable findings. However, substandard retraction handling practices can undermine this role. This study investigates deficiencies in the retraction handling practices of Emerald Publishing Group, a member publisher of the Committee on Publication Ethics. A multi-source analysis of Crossref’s Retraction Watch Database, Clarivate’s Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC), and Google Scholar identified significant discrepancies in the indexing and visibility of retracted articles. Of eighty-seven unique retracted articles analyzed, eighty-three had retraction notices buried in the acknowledgments section without unique digital object identifiers and issuance dates, making it impossible to distinguish between pre- and post-retraction citations. Furthermore, eighty-two of these retracted articles were not flagged as retracted publications in the WoS-CC, where they were inadequately represented as valid work, allowing them to accumulate citations and hence influence despite their retracted status. To address these deficiencies, Emerald must implement standardized retraction handling practices, collaborate with retraction tracking platforms, communicate retraction metadata to indexing services, and conduct regular audits of its journals to enhance transparency and uphold scholarly publishing standards.

The health informatics centre: a safe haven and trusted research environment enabling world-leading research

IntroductionThe Health Informatics Centre (HIC) is a regional Scottish Safe Haven dedicated to secure data management, ensuring its integrity, confidentiality, and availability through a robust information governance framework.MethodsAs a data processor, HIC is responsible for the secure curation, storage, and provision of research data extracts. Research-ready data are made available to approved researchers via our customisable cloud Trusted Research Environment (TRE).ResultsThe available granular data spans over 20 years, includes 2.1 million of the Scottish population, and HIC offers more than 170 datasets, with the most commonly used published with a digital object identifier. Data sources include clinical, hospital, laboratory, imaging, and research datasets which can be linked to new, and existing datasets. The data is quality-assured and released as project-specific extracts, ensuring robust privacy protection and research readiness. HIC’s infrastructure is secure-by-design and supports high-performance computing, advanced data analytics, and is customisable to researcher’s needs.ConclusionHIC has a long history of supporting a wide range of data-led research projects as a trusted and capable partner. At the time of publication 175 projects across academia, the NHS, and public sector organisations are active within HIC. Through adaptability, innovation and investment in people and infrastructure we have established a sustainable model which will continue to meet future needs and demands from world-leading research with sensitive data.

Disclosure discipline and independence safeguards: Reframing the company secretary as governance gatekeeper in Zambia’s regulated and listed firms

Microfinance institutions (MFIs) increasingly bundle finance with micro non-financial services (MNFS) such as entrepreneurship training, financial literacy, mentoring, and digitally delivered reminders. For micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) operating in high-uncertainty urban settings, these “soft services” may be as decisive as capital in shaping cash-flow discipline, resilience, and growth. Yet the evidence on MNFS is mixed: many programmes improve knowledge and business practices, but profit and employment effects are heterogeneous and sensitive to delivering quality and client selection. This article provides an implementation-focused evidence synthesis of peer-reviewed studies with verifiable digital object identifiers (DOIs) on business training and entrepreneurship education linked to microfinance, simplified financial literacy and rules-of-thumb coaching, mentoring and consulting, peer learning and savings groups, and digital channels as MNFS infrastructure. We organise findings using the Resource-Based View (RBV), Dynamic Capabilities Theory, Credit Rationing Theory and Social Capital Theory that links MNFS to MSME outcomes via managerial capital, financial discipline, reduced transaction and information frictions, and behavioural supports (commitment and reminders). Drawing on rigorous experimental evidence and Zambia-relevant studies on microfinance digitisation and regulation, we translate the literature into design principles for Lusaka-based MFIs and ecosystem actors. Key implications are that MNFS works best when it targets binding constraints, is simplified into actionable routines, is reinforced through follow-ups and peer accountability, and is delivered within credible governance and client protection systems. The paper concludes with a practical roadmap for designing, costing, and monitoring MNFS portfolios that are operationally feasible and aligned with responsible finance. In conclusion, the evidence indicates that MNFS improves managerial practices and financial discipline more consistently than short-run profits, with stronger impacts when interventions are tailored to binding constraints, reinforced over time, and integrated with responsible finance. Recommendations: Lusaka-based MFIs and ecosystem actors should deploy tiered MNFS portfolios that prioritise simplified routines, follow-up reinforcement, peer accountability, and reliable digital support while monitoring intermediate practice adoption indicators and maintaining strong client-protection governance.

The INGV data registry as a curated metadata infrastructure for Earth Science data stewardship.

The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Italy's primary institution for geophysics and volcanology, produces vast, heterogeneous geophysical and volcanological datasets. To enhance these assets under Open Science mandates, we implemented the INGV Data Registry: a centralized, curated metadata infrastructure. This metadata-only system is designed to decouple data description from physical storage, providing a scalable solution for distributed data environments. The Registry operates as a dynamic ecosystem that manages hundreds of records, each assigned to a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and mapped to international standards. This article examines the implementation and impact of the Registry as a critical infrastructure that supports the FAIR data principles. We demonstrate how a three-tiered validation workflow, combined with the integration of Persistent Identifiers (ORCIDs, RORs), ensures high-quality, interoperable metadata. By providing a single discovery point for INGV's distributed data assets, the Registry offers a model for data stewardship in large research organizations, accelerating scientific discovery and decoupling data availability from traditional publication cycles. The underlying metadata dataset is publicly available and formally citable.

PKRxiv: A Best Practice Model for Advancing Pharmacoequity Through Open Pharmacokinetic Data Sharing.

Model-informed drug development is increasingly integrated across the drug development continuum, enabling more efficient, cost-effective, and targeted trials while reducing reliance on animal studies. Achieving pharmacoequity requires not only equitable access to medicines but also to the data and knowledge that inform drug development and regulatory decisions. To address challenges in pharmacokinetic data sharing, PKRxiv (https://pkrxiv.org/) was developed as a discipline-specific repository designed around Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (FAIR) principles. This tutorial introduces PKRxiv's rationale, design, data submission and access workflows, and practical use cases. Available datasets at the end of September 2025 include over 5,500 individual drug concentration-time data points from over 900 unique participants across 3 continents. The platform supports structured submission of pharmacokinetic, pharmacogenetic, and safety/efficacy data, with persistent digital object identifiers for discoverability and citation. Contributors can apply one of three data sharing models-unrestricted, noncommercial, or contributor-controlled-with optional embargo periods. Users can explore datasets using the Data Explorer or Data Cards, or submit requests after providing a statement of intended use case. It enables pooling of datasets across multiple studies. Recommendations to help advance the field are proposed as data sharing becomes more widely expected: obtaining consent for unspecified future research use of data, sharing data underlying peer-reviewed publications as standard practice, including discipline-specific repositories in data management plans, and incentivizing post-approval data sharing by industry. Supporting data from all therapeutic areas and population groups, PKRxiv is a critical step toward a more transparent, equitable, and collaborative future in clinical pharmacology research.

Free Research for all? How the Unpaywall browser extension is affecting scholarly communication

This commentary reflects on the potential impacts of the technology, Unpaywall, on the systems of scholarly research dissemination. Unpaywall is a technological tool used to increase access and discoverability of Open Access versions of paywalled articles, making materials visible, disrupting current infrastructures, and highlighting existing alternatives. Because of its reliance on the external standard of the Digital Object Identifier, however, it also risks perpetuating the inequalities that already exist in this space. I explore how technologies affect surrounding infrastructures, how these effects are reflected in higher-level systems, and how they can be evaluated for alignment with professional standards and established goals.

G2P datasets: a hub for genomic datasets for predictive modeling in plants and animals.

We present G2P Datasets, a novel, open-access repository of publicly available genomic datasets for plants and animals. G2P Datasets currently hosts more than 100 public genomic datasets, meticulously compiled from diverse publications. The repository hosts meta-data (including digital object identifier for the hosted datasets) and scripts that can be used to download and read each dataset hosted into an R-environment. Scientists can submit new datasets by completing an online form. Additionally, many of the curated datasets are accessible through Kaggle and through links that allow rapid download of formatted R-objects. A searchable database of meta-data allows users to search through datasets for more than 60 species of plants and animals in a variety of traits and sample sizes. The repository is accessible via a web app interface with a catalog and clear instructions to contribute by adding new datasets and through GitHub. By unifying genomic and phenotypic meta-data into a navigable platform, we aim to facilitate genome-to-phenotype research in plant and animal genetics. This article provides an overview of the repository's content, organization, and utility.

DAW-Based Beatmaking Creative Process: Literature Review with Guilford Indicators

This study aims to map rhythmic creativity in Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)–based beatmaking using Guilford’s indicators of creativity—fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration—as the primary analytical framework. In higher education in music arts, these indicators are employed as an analytical lens to examine how rhythmic ideas are generated, varied, refined, and expanded during the DAW-based beatmaking process. The study adopted a directed literature review method with thematic synthesis, analyzing 40 open-access sources published between 2017 and 2025 and retrieved through database searches (e.g., DOAJ and Google Scholar) and manual reference list screening. All included sources were peer-reviewed and assigned Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). The literature was organized into thematic clusters, including DAW pedagogy, beatmaking practices, divergent thinking and musical creativity, digital collaboration, and critiques of technology and artificial intelligence in music production. Rhythmic elements—such as patterns, grooves, accents, subdivisions, swing, microtiming, transitions, arrangement, and energy automation—were subsequently mapped onto the four creativity indicators. The findings indicate that DAWs strongly facilitate rapid idea prototyping and iterative refinement, making fluency and elaboration the most prominent creativity indicators. In contrast, flexibility and originality appear to be more contingent on task design, learners’ willingness to shift compositional strategies, negotiation with genre conventions, and the broader collaborative and technological ecosystem, including templates, presets, and AI-assisted tools. This study provides a conceptual mapping framework and illustrative assessment directions to assist lecturers in interpreting DAW project artifacts as evidence of rhythmic creative processes. In the context of music arts higher education, the proposed mapping offers a reference for designing DAW-based composition tasks and developing more consistent and transparent assessment criteria for rhythmic creativity across the four Guilford indicators. Future research is recommended to empirically test this framework through the analysis of student-produced DAW artifacts.

This study presents a meta-analysis of open-access accounting information systems (AIS) literature in Indonesia during the digital transition period of 2015-2025. The primary objective is to identify and map the taxonomy of Independent Variables (X) and Dependent Variables (Y) predominantly used in academic and practical research. Through a systematic review of 15 key accredited articles with Digital Object Identifiers (DOI), this research finds that AIS success determinants (Variable X) have evolved from purely technical factors to integrative clusters encompassing Human Capital (competence, training), Organizational (culture, management commitment), and Technological (infrastructure, internal control) aspects. Meanwhile, Dependent Variables (Y) have shifted from mere technical user satisfaction to strategic impacts such as financial report quality, operational efficiency, and MSME business performance. These findings indicate that AIS research in Indonesia is heavily influenced by public sector regulatory contexts and cloud technology adoption in the MSME sector. This report serves as a reference framework for future researchers to explore emerging variables such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity behavior within the accounting ecosystem.

The present research examines the altmetric presence in the Indian journals published within the discipline of Library and Information Science (LIS). The population consists of scholarly articles published in Indian LIS journals, which are currently indexed on the Web of Science (WoS) from 2005 to 2023. Citations of scholarly articles were obtained from the WoS database, and the Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) was obtained using Altmetric Explorer. Three Indian LIS journals were identified, which are currently indexed on the WoS with an aggregate total of 1350 scholarly articles with Digital Object Identifier. Out of 1350 scholarly articles, 202 (14.96%) had an AAS. Popular altmetrics data sources were also studied, where X (Twitter) was the famous media channel where scholarly articles from Indian LIS journals were mentioned. Mendeley readership and citations from the Dimensions database were also analysed to know the varied aspects of research published in selected journals. Pearson correlation analysis displays a weakly positive relationship between citations and AAS, showing that altmetric attention and conventional citations represent complementary characteristics of research impact. The originality of this research exists in its unique focus on WoS-listed Indian LIS journals by evaluating year-wise and journal-wise trends, choosing relevant altmetric sources, and assessing the correlationship between citation counts, AAS, and Mendeley readership. By examining a specific geographic area and a disciplinary context, this research fills a notable gap and adds original insights into the societal visibility and academic influence of Indian LIS publications.

Evolution trends internal fixation materials knowledge mapping

This study utilizes bibliometric tools VOSviewer and CiteSpace to analyze the research hotspots, development trends, and emerging dynamics in the field of internal fixation materials (IFM) from 2004 to 2024. The dataset used in this study is publicly available at https://github.com/Lin1Xiao2Zhou3/VOS-CiteSpace-Datasets, and its permanent digital object identifier link is https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14277420. IFM are crucial in orthopedics for fracture fixation and bone healing. Traditional metallic materials, such as stainless steel and titanium alloys, have been widely used in clinical practice due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, the biocompatibility issues of these materials limit their long-term clinical effectiveness. In recent years, research has shifted towards biodegradable materials, such as magnesium alloys and composites, to enhance biocompatibility and reduce the need for secondary surgeries. Through keyword co-occurrence and citation analysis, this study identifies key research themes, influential scholars, and leading institutions in the field. The results show that bioactive materials, mechanical properties, biodegradability, and their roles in promoting bone healing have emerged as core research priorities. Temporal trends indicate that the introduction of novel materials, advancements in composites, and the application of biomedical engineering technologies have become key directions in research. Future studies are expected to focus on personalized and intelligent designs, as well as improving biocompatibility, to meet clinical needs and improve patient outcomes.
