Abstract This study explores how a government-led city branding initiative can become a site of public contestation when symbolic meanings are not collectively negotiated. In 2025, the Jember Regency Government introduced the slogan “Semua Karena Cinta” (All Because of Love) and a pink-dominated visual identity as part of its official branding strategy. Using a qualitative case study approach grounded in a constructivist perspective, this research examines how the branding was interpreted, debated, and resisted in public communication spaces. Data were gathered from official government publications and Instagram content, online news coverage, social media comments, and in-depth interviews with community members, and analyzed through thematic coding with NVivo. The findings show that public resistance was driven by perceived misalignment between the pink symbolism and Jember’s socio-cultural identity, the saturation of visual symbols in public facilities, and a gap between the “love” narrative and visible political dynamics. Rather than outright policy rejection, resistance appeared mainly through humor, sarcasm, and critical digital discourse, indicating tensions in symbolic legitimacy. Theoretically, this study contributes to city branding scholarship by applying Issue Management Theory to interpret public resistance as an early signal of meaning misalignment. Practically, it highlights the importance of participatory and dialogic communication in sustaining trust and legitimacy in government branding initiatives.

Introduction . The article examines the evolution of phatic communication means in Englishlanguage film dialogue over nearly ninety years (1930–2018). The relevance of the study is determined by the need to investigate the dynamics of discursive practices reflecting socio-cultural changes in society. The scientific novelty lies in the application of diachronic corpus analysis to phatic markers in film speech to identify trends towards colloquialization and democratization of communicative norms conveyed through mass art. The aim of the research is to identify quantitative and qualitative changes in the use of phatic units based on the Movies corpus and to interpret them in the context of the evolution of communicative practices. Methodology and sources . The research is carried out within the framework of diachronic discourse studies and corpus linguistics. The material is the Movies corpus, containing dialogues from English-language films of 1930–2018 (total volume about 200 million words). The analysis was conducted in three stages: 1) compiling a list of phatic markers based on preliminary film viewing and theoretical works; 2) calculating the normalized frequency of the selected units by decade, followed by consolidation into three periods (1930–1960, 1961–1990, 1991–2018) and computing the weighted average frequency taking into account the size of subcorpora; 3) interpreting the obtained data. Results and discussions. The analysis of the dynamics of phatic markers revealed a steady trend towards colloquialization and democratization of film speech. This is most clearly manifested in the change of dominant greeting and farewell formulas: formal good morning and goodbye consistently give way to informal hi and bye . In the group of markers reflecting inquiries about the interlocutor's state, the ritualized formula how do you do? is being replaced by more colloquial equivalents how are you doing and what's up? . Discourse markers and fillers imitating speech spontaneity show a significant increase. Politeness formulas consistently decline, giving way to shorter and more direct analogues. The obtained data indicate that film dialogue gradually moves away from theatrical conventionality and approaches live conversational speech, reflecting real language changes and the transformation of communicative norms in society. Conclusion . The conducted research confirmed that phatic communication in Englishlanguage film dialogue has undergone significant evolution. From the formal, ritualized structures of the 1930s–1960s, film speech has shifted towards colloquial forms imitating spontaneous oral communication. Starting from the 1960s, a decline in the frequency of etiquette clichés and an increase in discourse markers, fillers, and reduced forms is recorded, reflecting the general trend towards language democratization and the enrichment of film speech with elements natural to real communication. Phatic means become an important tool for creating a credible speech portrait.

This study examines how algorithm-based dialogic communication operates in TikTok Live as a form of digital religious service at the Bulukerto Office of Religious Affairs (KUA). The research aims to analyze interaction patterns, the role of algorithmic mediation, and the adaptation of dialogic communication principles in platform-based environments. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with the TikTok Live host and non-participant observation of five live sessions. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring interaction structures. The findings reveal that communication does not occur randomly but follows a structured pattern consisting of three interconnected mechanisms: responsiveness, amplification, and selectivity. Responsiveness enables real-time interaction, amplification increases visibility through engagement signals, and selectivity filters which interactions receive attention. These mechanisms form an iterative communication system shaped by both human agency and algorithmic governance. This study contributes to the development of communication theory by integrating dialogic communication with algorithmic mediation into a conceptual model. Practically, the findings provide insights for public institutions in optimizing digital religious services within algorithm-driven platforms.

Creative idea withholding constitutes a significant yet insufficiently examined obstacle to organizational innovation, as unexpressed ideas cannot be evaluated or implemented. Although previous research has generally depicted emotional environments as uniformly advantageous for creativity and voice, recent perspectives indicate that emotional norms may also restrict expression by fostering self-censorship. Drawing on emotional culture theory, the present study investigates how shared norms of emotional expression influence employees’ intentional withholding of creative ideas and introduces a curvilinear framework to reconcile these divergent views. Survey data from 451 employees in Islamic banking institutions in South Punjab, Pakistan, supplemented by contextual information from managers, were analyzed using a moderated curvilinear model in Mplus. The findings reveal a U-shaped relationship, with creative idea withholding being highest when emotional culture is either weak or excessively strong, and lowest at moderate levels. Furthermore, the communication climate was found to moderate the relationship between emotional culture and creative idea withholding. By reframing creativity from a cognitive capability to a strategic behavioral choice, this study advances emotional culture theory, extends research on voice and silence, and underscores the paradoxical influence of emotional norms on the expression or suppression of creative ideas. The results suggest that organizations should foster balanced emotional cultures that support emotional norms without imposing excessive pressure for conformity. Additionally, the importance of open and dialogic communication practices in mitigating employees’ tendency to withhold creative ideas is emphasized.

ABSTRACT This study examines how school leaders use Facebook as a leadership practice within contexts of public visibility, accountability, and governance. Drawing on dialogic public relations theory, it explores how policy demands and institutional expectations shape communication strategies. Using qualitative interviews with 20 Israeli school leaders who manage school Facebook pages, the study identifies key themes through thematic analysis. Four main audience groups emerged: education authorities, parents, city residents, and school staff. Participants emphasized image management, community engagement, visual content, and collaborative production with teachers. The findings highlight strategic challenges and question the effectiveness of dialogue-oriented practices under accountability pressures.

This study aims to analyze the role of interpersonal communication in building marital resilience in married couples within the context of socio-cultural change in the digital era. This study employed a qualitative approach through a literature review, reviewing articles from reputable national and international journals published between 2023 and 2025. Data analysis was conducted thematically to identify patterns in the concepts of communication, conflict, and marital resilience. The results indicate that openness, empathy, dialogic communication, and emotional regulation are key elements in maintaining harmonious marital relationships. This study also indicates that work pressure and digital distractions contribute to a decrease in the intensity of face-to-face communication and a decrease in the quality of emotional closeness between partners. Conceptually, this study confirms that interpersonal communication in the household is a dynamic, reflective, and contextual social process. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of interpersonal communication for husbands and wives as a social process that shapes household resilience in the face of the dynamics of contemporary social change.

The article discusses how people have always negotiated, concluding trade agreements, ending wars with peace treaties, agreeing on the distribution of property, etc. It is emphasised that the participation of a lawyer in the negotiation process has a positive impact on both the conclusion of the contract and its subsequent implementation. The direct participation of a lawyer in negotiations also has a psychological effect. Their presence gives members of their group confidence and creates an understanding among opponents of the legal validity and indisputability of the arguments and proposals put forward. It is emphasised that knowledge of the law, good preparation for negotiations, and the application of judicial practice influence the nature of relations with the opposing team, directing them towards legal guidelines and requirements, thereby helping to consolidate one’s own positions and interests in negotiations. In the process of negotiation communication, knowledge is transferred from the speaker to the listener. The essence of the negotiation process lies in such a two-way transfer of knowledge, which leads to at least a partial alignment of the interests of the participants and the achievement of an agreement; at the same time, it becomes possible to document the results of the negotiations. It is emphasised that the development of a new system of relations between the state and public organisations, between the state and enterprises, between the state and citizens requires wider use of negotiations as a means of coordinating and achieving mutual goals and interests. Negotiations are one of the main components of a lawyer’s professional activity. It is no coincidence that many contracts contain a clause stating that in the event of disputes arising from the contract, the parties will use all necessary means to resolve the dispute through negotiations, and most often this clause is not formal. It has been proven that the prerequisites for successful negotiations in legal practice involve a number of both objective and subjective factors and conditions. First of all, the negotiating partners must meet the following conditions: both parties must have an interest in the subject matter of the negotiations, significant authority to make final decisions (the relevant right to negotiate), sufficient competence, necessary knowledge of the subject matter of the negotiations, take into account as fully as possible the subjective and objective interests of the other party and be willing to compromise, and trust each other to a certain extent. To ensure the effectiveness of negotiations, certain rules should also be followed. It was concluded that the main task that negotiations in legal practice are designed to solve is to agree, through mutual compromise, on the terms of the contract, its conclusion and the procedure for its implementation, as well as to reach agreement when resolving various problems in extreme situations.

Objective: The objective of this study is to identify leadership styles that are most effective in fostering engagement among Generation Z employees in the contemporary workplace. In particular, the study investigates the extent to which transformational leadership, supported by dialogical communication practices, enhances employee engagement among staff. Theoretical Framework: The study is grounded in established leadership theory and generational workforce models, with particular reference to transformational, transactional, and servant leadership frameworks, and employs dialogical communication, characterised by respectful, composed, and assertive interaction, as a relational lens for examining leadership behaviours in relation to Generation Z expectations of authenticity, autonomy, and professional development. Method: A mixed-methods design within a positivist paradigm was used, combining structured surveys on engagement and leadership perceptions with thematic analysis of 30 semi-structured interviews. This enabled triangulation of behavioural patterns, communication preferences, and perceived leadership impact. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate that transformational leadership, when reinforced by consistent dialogical communication, significantly enhances Generation Z employees’ motivation, organisational trust, and willingness to exceed minimum role expectations, while transactional and servant leadership styles are comparatively less effective in addressing their relational and developmental needs. Research Implications: The study provides practical guidance for leaders seeking to enhance the engagement of younger employees, foster effective communication climates, and strengthen organisational culture through relationship-centred leadership practices. Originality/Value: This research advances a generationally responsive leadership model by integrating dialogical communication principles within transformational leadership. Its contribution lies in presenting a framework that supports improved employee engagement and performance among Generation Z employees.

Nonprofit-oriented entities play a critical role in providing social, educational, religious, and humanitarian services, yet face growing demands for transparent and accountable financial reporting. This study examines Interpretation of Financial Accounting Standards (ISAK) 35 on the Presentation of Financial Statements of Nonprofit-Oriented Entities through the lens of Jurgen Habermas’s critical hermeneutics. Employing a qualitative approach within an interpretive-critical paradigm, the study analyzes ISAK 35 as a normative accounting text to uncover the meanings, interests, and potential communicative distortions embedded within the standard. The primary data consist of the Exposure Draft of ISAK 35 and supporting documents, including the Conceptual Framework for Financial Reporting and relevant Indonesian Financial Accounting Standards (PSAK), collected through document analysis. Drawing on legitimacy theory and entity theory, the findings indicate that ISAK 35 functions not only as a technical guideline for financial reporting but also as a formal instrument of legitimacy for nonprofit organizations. The separation of net assets with and without restrictions reflects the application of entity theory and aims to enhance transparency and accountability. However, from a critical perspective, the study finds that the emphasis on compliance and technical presentation may reinforce instrumental rationality, potentially limiting dialogical communication between nonprofit entities and their stakeholders, particularly in organizations lacking adequate accounting competence. This study contributes to critical accounting literature by highlighting the need to balance standardization with substantive public accountability and communicative rationality in nonprofit financial reporting.

The phenomenon of fatherlessness has emerged as a significant global social issue, influ-encing children's psychological well-being, identity formation, and moral development. While existing scholarship has largely examined fatherlessness through psychological and sociological frameworks, Qur'anic narratives on father-child relationships are often treated primarily within theological discourse. Consequently, there remains limited explo-ration of how classical Qur'anic exegesis can contribute to contemporary discussions on parenting and family crises. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the concept of paternal parenting in the stories of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ya'qub through the in-terpretive lens of Tafsir al-Kashshāf by al-Zamakhsharī and examines its relevance to the modern phenomenon of fatherlessness. This research employs a qualitative library-based approach combined with thematic Qur'anic interpretation (tafsīr mawḍū'ī). The analysis focuses on key Qur'anic passages related to father-son interactions, particularly Q.S. al-Ṣāffāt:102 and Q.S. Yūsuf:4-5, interpreted through the linguistic-rational framework characteristic of Tafsir al-Kashshāf. Data are analyzed descriptively and interpretatively to identify the parenting principles embedded within the exegetical discourse. The find-ings demonstrate that Tafsir al-Kashshāf articulates a prophetic model of paternal parent-ing grounded in three interrelated principles: democratic companionship, dialogical com-munication, and secure emotional attachment. Prophet Ibrahim's interaction with Ismail il-lustrates participatory decision-making and consultative dialogue, while Prophet Ya'qub's relationship with Yusuf reflects emotional attentiveness and psychological protection that foster a secure relational environment. This study contributes to Qur'anic studies by highlighting the contemporary relevance of classical exegesis in addressing modern social challenges. Furthermore, it offers a conceptual framework for integrating Qur'anic parent-ing values into contemporary family discourse, emphasizing the father's emotional pres-ence, communicative engagement, and moral leadership as essential elements in mitigating the fatherlessness crisis in modern societies.

Purpose: This study analyzes the role of the Instagram account @humas_poldalampung in Publishing Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and delivering institutional information. It addresses the limited empirical evidence on regional police public relations accounts, particularly whether PSA dissemination is conducted as one-way communication or dialogic engagement. Methodology: A descriptive qualitative approach was used. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with administrators, direct observations, and analyses of archival materials (2022-2024), supported by a literature review. Analysis involved data reduction, coding, thematic categorization, and source triangulation. Results: The content was predominantly informative and educational, covering police activities and PSAs on security, public order, traffic safety, drug prevention, hoax prevention, and public services. Messages were delivered visually through photos, infographics, and short videos. Communication remained largely one-way, with limited sustained interaction. Conclusions: The account functions as a digital public communication channel combining institutional dissemination and persuasive PSAs, but has not fully optimized Instagram for dialogue and participation. This reflects the tension between broadcast-oriented messaging and social media’s dialogic expectations. Limitations: This study focused on one account (2022–2024) without assessing audience perceptions, engagement quality, behavioral impact, or comparing other platforms. Contributions: This study highlights a regional police account and examines PSA dissemination through one-way versus dialogic communication patterns. It offers practical recommendations to improve interaction management, response standards, and structured engagement to enhance trust and PSA effectiveness.

This study examines public relations strategies for inclusive employment through a case study of the Difabis Coffee and Tea Program implemented by BAZNAS BAZIS Jakarta. Using a qualitative case study approach grounded in the constructivist paradigm, the research analyzes how inclusive employment is designed, communicated, and evaluated within a service-sector setting. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with organizational stakeholders, deaf baristas, and non-disabled customers, complemented by participant observation and document analysis. The analysis applies the Research-Action-Communication-Evaluation (RACE) framework to systematically examine public relations practices across program stages. The findings reveal that inclusive employment is most effective when public relations functions extend beyond promotional activities to encompass social listening, participatory action, and dialogic communication. The use of Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO), visual communication tools, and narrative storytelling enabled meaningful interaction between employees with disabilities and customers, transforming routine service encounters into inclusive social experiences. Moreover, participatory evaluation practices strengthened organizational learning and reinforced stakeholder trust. The study contributes to public relations and inclusive employment literature by demonstrating how strategic communication can support disability-inclusive workplaces, particularly within nonprofit and faith-based organizations. The findings highlight the potential of public relations as a mechanism for social transformation that integrates economic empowerment, communication practices, and values of equality in everyday organizational life.

ABSTRACT The COVID‐19 infodemic posed unprecedented challenges to public governance and governmental crisis management. This study examines the Chinese government's response to social media rumors to test and extend the applicability of Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) within a non‐Western, centralized political context. Through a content analysis of 278 rumor‐response posts from ten key governmental Weibo accounts and a textual analysis of over 22,000 public comments, this research investigates the government's approach and its reception. The analysis reveals a distinct crisis management model favoring denial and refutation. Significantly, legal punishment was identified as a primary tool for information control, a practice that represents a significant extension of the traditional SCCT framework. While this top‐down, multi‐modal response demonstrated effectiveness in controlling information, analysis of public comments revealed complex stakeholder reactions, including widespread skepticism that raises concerns about the erosion of long‐term public trust. Ultimately, the findings reveal a unique crisis management paradigm shaped by China's political culture, which prioritizes social stability over dialogic communication. This study contributes to the crisis management literature by providing critical lessons for crisis managers on the strategic trade‐offs of authoritative crisis response and highlighting the imperative to contextualize crisis theories within diverse political environments.

Healthcare organisations are increasingly intercultural workplaces in which leadership, knowledge sharing, and innovation are shaped through ongoing communicative negotiation across cultural differences. However, much existing research treats culture as a static background condition and under-theorises how leadership communication constitutes organisational realities. Drawing on intercultural communication theory, the communicative constitution of organizations (CCO), and leadership sense-giving, this study examines how culture is communicatively constituted through cross-cultural leadership and how these cultural processes shape knowledge sharing and individual innovation in culturally diverse healthcare organizations. Using a sequential mixed-methods design, qualitative interviews were first conducted to explore how healthcare professionals interpret leaders’ sense-giving as cultural cues that define legitimacy and participation. A subsequent quantitative study tested a sequential mediation model. The results show that leadership sense-giving constitutes an inclusive organisational culture, which fosters knowledge sharing and enables individual innovation. By foregrounding culture as an emergent communicative process, this study advances intercultural communication research by explaining how leadership communication becomes consequential for innovation in healthcare contexts. Practically, the findings suggest that culturally inclusive leadership sensegiving can be enacted through everyday healthcare routines, such as team meetings, clinical handovers, and shared decision-making processes, to support knowledge sharing and innovation.

This study explores the principal’s leadership strategies and the role of organizational climate in improving teacher work discipline. Teacher discipline is a crucial element in ensuring instructional quality, professional accountability, and sustainable school performance. A qualitative case study approach was employed to obtain an in-depth understanding of leadership practices implemented in the natural setting of the school. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis involving the principal, vice principals, and teachers. The findings reveal that discipline improvement is shaped by exemplary leadership, dialogic communication, continuous coaching, and the application of humanistic regulations supported by moral and social rewards. In addition, a collegial and supportive organizational climate strengthens collective awareness and encourages teachers to comply with professional standards voluntarily. Discipline is therefore constructed not merely through administrative control but through shared values and social interaction. This study contributes to educational leadership literature by providing contextual evidence of how leadership practices interact with organizational environments in shaping teacher behavior. Practically, the findings offer guidance for school leaders in designing participatory and sustainable discipline development strategies.

One of the open challenges of modern genre studies is the problem associated with the description of dialogical speech genres. Despite the existence of a significant number of linguistic papers dealing with the description of various dialogical genres, there is an urgent need for developing an ultimate methodology for describing dialogical speech genres as units of dialogical speech in modern genre studies. The urgency of the research is determined by its inclusion in the problematic field of speech genre studies. The novelty of the research refers to the presentation of dialogical speech genres as a type (model) of utterance, generated by multi-lingual activity and characterized by the invariant and variant features defining their text production. The invariant features define the core of the genre canon – a mental scheme of the genre reflected in the genre consciousness of a native speaker. The variant features of the speech genre are connected with the diversity of the genre canon, associated with the actualization of the genre in a particular sphere of communication and the sphere of social consciousness manifestation. At the same time, among the invariant features of the dialogical genre we point out the intentionality of the subjects of dialogical communication, the metalinguistic and structural methods of organizing a typical utterance, its theme and the quality of interpersonal relations between the communicators. The approach to the description of dialogical speech genres suggested in the article is based on the comprehension of the priority of the whole in relation to its parts. It is holistic by nature. The research was performed by the analytical-descriptive method and the modeling method.

This article draws on key findings from my doctoral dissertation, which investigates development communication strategies in relation to community empowerment and social change within the implementation of the social forestry program in Gunungkidul Regency, the special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The research involved 69 key informants and two focus-group discussions involving forest farmer groups. Data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings demonstrated that the social forestry program is an inherently multistakeholder initiative involving local communities, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations, academics, donor institutions, financial institutions, and private-sector actors. The program employs dialogic communication strategies to foster collective action. Community empowerment is implemented at two distinct levels: group level and community level. At the group level, empowerment activities are focused on strengthening institutional capacity, forest area management, and the forest-based businesses of Forest Farmer Group. At the community level, empowerment activities concentrate on the development of partnership-based collaboration in timber marketing and certification. The findings indicate that social forestry has contributed to significant social change across individual farmers, farmer organizations, and forest-based communities. The effectiveness of the social forestry program depends on the role of change agents in facilitating community engagement throughout all stages of the program.

Fiction dialogues offer an effective tool for developing the pragmatic and sociocultural components of communicative skills in learners of Russian as a foreign language (RFL). Dialogues from Russian literature may be used to teach RFL students to interpret implicit meanings, recognize communicative strategies, and select appropriate linguistic resources in contemporary intercultural communication, including digitally mediated and virtual contexts. The method was tested on Y. V. Trifonov’s novella The Exchange, which is rich in authentic cultural patterns of interpersonal interaction. By analyzing the communicative strategies realized in these dialogues, the authors substantiated the use of fiction dialogue as a reliable model for developing pragmatic competence in RFL learners. The stylistic, pragmatic, and discourse methods included elements of comparative analysis and situational modeling. Evasion, rational persuasion, and emotional pressure proved to be the dominant strategies of interpersonal interaction in the novella. Their specific linguistic and pragmatic markers correlated with the social roles and psychological orientations of the characters. The text analysis served as material for developing communicative skills of interpreting implicit meanings and making strategic choices of linguistic means. These skills are relevant for face-to-face and virtual communication with its asynchronicity and reduced non-verbal cues. The article introduces a stage-based methodological model for working with fiction dialogue aimed at developing pragmatic and sociocultural competence in B2–C1 RFL learners. The dialogues are not meant for reciting: they show RFL learners how to make strategic choices in dialogical communication, where each utterance is interpreted in relation to both speech norms and communicative intention. In addition, the model prepares RFL learners for digital intercultural communication.

The expansion of digital media has reshaped how social issues are articulated and negotiated in everyday life, including questions of gender and power. This study examines how gender consciousness is constructed through TikTok content by analyzing social representations of patriarchal culture on the Indonesian TikTok account @bincangperempuan. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study analyzes eight TikTok videos published between January and June 2025 using purposive sampling. Data were collected through content documentation and observation, focusing on narrative, visual, and discursive elements, and were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The findings indicate that patriarchal culture is predominantly represented through women’s everyday lived experiences rather than abstract or institutional discourse. Personal storytelling, dialogic communication, and audiovisual strategies function as key mechanisms in transforming individual experiences into shared social meanings. Audience interaction further extends this process by fostering collective reflection and reinforcing gender awareness through participatory dialogue. The study demonstrates that gender consciousness emerges as a socially mediated and gradual process, shaped through representation, interaction, and symbolic interpretation. Overall, the findings highlight TikTok’s role as a social space that facilitates the articulation of gender awareness and symbolic resistance to patriarchal norms within contemporary Indonesian society.
