Objective To observe the expression and clinical significance of Galectin-1 in human colon adenocarcinoma. Methods Expression of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein was detected by in situ hybrid method and immunohistochemistry method in 75 cases of colon adenocarcinoma tissues, 43 cases of mucosa adjacent to cancer, and 75 cases of normal colon mucosa, and correlations between expression of Galectin-1 and clinicopathological features was analyzed. Results The results of in situ hybrid revealed that the expression of Galectin-1 mRNA in colon adenocarcinoma tissues (84.00%) was significantly higher than those of mucosa adjacent to cancer (34.88%) and normal esophageal mucosa epithelial tissue (22.67%), there were significant differences in Galectin-1 mRNA expression among three groups (P 0.05), but closely related to TNM staging and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05). The results of correlation analysis of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein expressions demonstrated that the expression of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein in colon adenocarcinoma tissues displayed positive correlation (r=0.600, P<0.01). Conclusion Expressions of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein in colon adenocarcinoma tissues are significantly higher than those in mucosa adjacent to cancer and normal coion epithelium tissues, and Galectin-1 at high level plays an important role in occurrence and development of colon adenocarcinoma. Expressions of Galectin-1 mRNA and protein are both associated with TNM staging and lymph node metastasis, but not related to histologic grade and invasion depth, suggesting Galectin-1 may be an important molecular marker for diagnosis of malignant degree of colon adenocarcinoma.
