Impact of environmental knowledge, responsibility and concern on sustainable consumption behavior: does customer attitude matter?

PurposeThe constant population growth and inappropriate consumption patterns have led to abnormal use of the earth's capacities, destruction of natural resources, enormous spread of diseases, and increased waste materials. Thus, these issues should be highlighted to avoid serious problems for the earth. Accordingly, this study examines the effect of environmental knowledge (EK), environmental responsibility (ER), and environmental concern (EC) on sustainable consumption behavior (SCB), with the mediating role of customer attitude (CA).Design/methodology/approachThe present applied study is descriptive-correlational. The statistical population includes customers of Hyperstar stores located in Tehran. Overall, a sample size of 384 people was selected based on Cochran's formula. The data were collected using standard questionnaires and analyzed using structural equation modeling and Smart PLS version 3 software.FindingsThe fit of the proposed model was confirmed at measurement, structural, and general levels. Thus, it indicates that the structural model has an acceptable fit. Furthermore, the findings emphasize that ER and EC have a positive effect on CA, and ER and EC have a positive impact on SCB. ER and EC have a positive effect on SCB through the mediation of CA, while EK does not have any significant effect on SCB but EK has an effect on SCB through the mediation of CA.Originality/valueGiven the growth of environmental destruction, it is necessary to consider the change of CA toward buying sustainable products. Therefore, this study pays attention to the mediating role of attitude and examines the effects of EK, EC, and ER that cause SCB among customers of Hyperstars.

The Impact of Land Reform Policies on the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in Local Communities

One of the main components of the sustainable development program is land reform. At the same time, there is a lot of land conflict caused by sustainable development programs that accelerate investment through palm mining, which impacts local communities' forced takeover of land and the destruction of natural resources. The research aims to determine to what extent land reform programs impact the protection of local communities and sustainable management of natural resources. This research is descriptive, using statute, conceptual, and case approaches. As well as comparing with three countries - Indonesia, Australia, and the Netherlands - to find out the obstacles to implementing land reforms in the country. The results of this research are, first, that land reforms have a good impact on protecting local communities. However, sustainable natural resource management still takes time and consideration of some aspects. Second, there are still crucial obstacles that hinder the implementation of land reform in Indonesia, Australia, and the Netherlands. Therefore, it is crucial to adopt a participatory and collaborative approach to planning and implementing land reform programs to guarantee that the interests of all parties are addressed sustainably and equitably.

International humanitarian law and ecocide: the war in Ukraine as a case study

Ecocide, an illegal act that causes serious damage to the environment, has become one of the greatest threats to the planet. Ukraine, which has recently been exposed to ecocide, strives to bring the perpetrators to justice by applying to international judicial bodies and creating mechanisms for collecting evidence. Ecocide should be included in the list of crimes against humanity and properly regulated at the international level, which will contribute to the preservation of the environment and human security. The purpose of this article is to define the crime of ecocide under international humanitarian law, apply it to the conflict in Ukraine, and discuss possible international mechanisms for bringing to justice those who have committed ecocide. This paper showcases Ukraine’s legal and factual basis for holding Russia accountable for ecocide, which includes the destruction of natural resources, water and air pollution and actions that could result in environmental catastrophes. This paper emphasizes the importance of filing lawsuits with international bodies, international cooperation, public engagement, and resource mobilization for effective prosecution. Ukraine’s commitment to environmental protection through the pursuit of ecocide accountability is of global significance for the preservation of the planet and well-being of future generations.

The Effects of Environmental Values on Pro-Environmental Behavior and Attitude of Housewives in Rafsanjan, Southeast Area of Iran

Introduction: Indiscriminate consumption of energy, environmental pollution, and destruction of natural resources are among the most important issues related to pro-environmental behavior of people in society, and environmental values play an important role in shaping internal motivations of people about environmental issues. This study was conducted to determine the effects of environmental values on pro-environmental behavior and attitude of housewives in Rafsanjan, southeast area of Iran. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 housewives who were selected as random in health-care centers in Rafsanjan city. The data collection was done by a validated questionnaire regarding environmental values, attitude, and behavior. Pearson correlation, independent t-test, and ANOVA statistical tests were used to analyze data in SPSS.V22 software. Results: The mean score of environmental values was 3.37 ± 26.76 (89.2%), which was significant according to the level of education (p = 0.016). The mean score of attitude and environmental values was 6.88 ± 40.65 (81.3%) and 40.22 ± 5.66 (80.44%), respectively. Also, there was a significant relationship between the score of pro-environmental behaviors and the level of education (p = 0.012). Pearson's correlation showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between environmental values and attitudes (r = 0.239, p = 0.01) and pro-environmental behaviors (r = 0.146, p = 0.01). Conclusion: Based on the results, educated housewives believe more value for the environment, and have more appropriate pro-environmental behavior; thus, planning to sensitize society members, especially housewives, regarding the values of environmental protection through religious and cultural-based environmental education programs and increasing the level of education are recommended.

Ecosystem health assessment using multi-criteria approach in a forested ecotone area in northwest Iran

Assessing and monitoring ecosystem health are critical components of ecosystem management as they provide information on natural resource destruction and the causes and factors leading to it. The need for comprehensive and multidimensional indices for assessing and predicting the status of ecosystems has become increasingly important. The ecosystem health index (EHI) was calculated by assessing multiple criteria, including vigor, organization, and resilience criteria, in an ecotone ecosystem in Ardabil province. Different weighting approaches were used to evaluate the index value, and sub-watersheds were prioritized based on the index weighting. The EHI values varied among the studied sub-watersheds, ranging from 0.32 to 0.79, depending on the weighting method. Sub-watershed SW1 had a higher health status with a value of 0.77 compared to other studied sub-watersheds in the Iril watershed, while SW5 had a lower health status with a value of 0.34 in the equal weighting approach. The average value of the EHI for all studied sub-watersheds in the Iril watershed was found to be 0.50, indicating a relatively undesirable ecosystem health status. The EHI is a useful tool for prioritizing areas and an effective step in ecosystem management, considering the multidimensional nature of the index and the factors affecting ecosystem restoration or destruction. Assessing the extent of ecosystem degradation across various regions depends on the health status of the studied ecosystem, the feasibility of index calculation, and may involve different selection criteria.

Köpük Beton Üretiminde İnşaat Yıkıntı Atığı İnce Agregası Kullanımı ve Optimum Su/Çimento Oranının Belirlenmesi

İnşaat sektöründe hammadde temini doğal kaynaklarımız hızlı azalmasına veya tahrip edilmesine neden olmaktadır. Doğal kaynakların azalmasını veya tahrip edilmesini azaltmak için inşaat yıkıntı atıklarının geri kazanılması, hammaddeye ihtiyacını ve aynı zamanda çevresel kirliliğini de azaltılacaktır. Bu çalışmada inşaat yıkıntı atığı ince (kum) agrega ile köpük beton üretile bilirliği araştırılmıştır. Karışımlarda agrega olarak 4 mm elekten geçen inşaat yıkıntı atığı kullanılarak 5 farklı su/çimento oranı ile köpük beton üretilmiştir. Üretilen köpük beton numunelerinin birim hacim ağırlıkları, basınç dayanımları, su emme oranı, ultra ses geçiş hızı ve ısıl iletkenlik katsayıları gibi özellikleri incelenmiştir. Bu özeliklerden en uygun olanlar S/Ç oranı 0,45 olan karışım tasarımı vermiştir.

STRUCTURE ET DISTRIBUTION DE LA POPULATION DE BALANITES AEGYPTIACA (L.) DEL. DANS LA COMMUNE RURALE DE SIMIRI (NIGER)

In the context of the rampant destruction of natural resources, a study on the populations of Balanites aegyptiaca was carried out in Simiri. The objective of the study is to improve the understanding of the natural and anthropogenic ecological processes which are determining the distribution and structure of these populations. The survey device used is systematic with 4 transects of 2 km each arranged radially around the villages. Analysis of vegetation data shows that the floristic diversity of the area is declining. A total of 26 species divided into 19 genera and 12 families are inventoried. The most represented families are Combretaceae and Mimosaceae with 23.08% each. The population is dominated by Combretum glutinosum (30.26%), Balanites aegyptiaca (16.59%), Acacia albida (10.85%), Ziziphus mauritiana (9.35%), Guiera senegalensis (8.29%) and Piliostigma reticulatum (5.84%). The spatial distribution of Balanites aegyptiaca is under the influence of natural dynamic processes and anthropogenic actions with great variability in its density both at the village scale and at the scale of geomorphological and land use units. Furthermore, their specific structure is recurrently approved, which gives them great ecological importance in the municipality. The demographic structure of Balanites aegyptiaca, for its part, showed the population, an appreciable proportion of young individuals, and aging populations and thus confirms the importance of this woody resource. However, renewal (92%) constitutes, at the current state, the structural problem because of the strong competition for the seed.

Modern Approaches to Using a Territorial Community Web Portal to Popularize Eco­Technologies

The relevance of the article. Today’s society faces challenges related to environmental issues that directly affect the quality of our lives and the future of our planet. Environmental pollution, destruction of natural resources and climate change indicate the need for decisive actions in the field of environmental protection. To support the sustainable development of Ukraine’s regions and ensure the viability of ecosystems, it is necessary to involve citizens in participating in programs and projects aimed at the popularization and implementation of eco-technologies. The relevance of this study is to consider modern approaches, methods and initiatives aimed at increasing the environmental awareness and activity of citizens in the amalgamated community in the important matter of environmental protection.
 The purpose of the work is to analyze modern approaches to the use of web portals for popularization eco-technologies among citizens and to build a formal model of the task of popularizing eco-technologies on the web portal of the amalgamated community in order to increase their awareness and optimize activity in making environmentally responsible decisions in everyday life.
 The methodology consists in the use of an analytical method, methods of description, comparison and generalization.
 The results. Modern approaches to the information content of domestic web portals, which popularize the activities of eco-enterprises, are analyzed. An information model for solving the task of promoting eco-technologies through the web portal of the amalgamated community has been developed. A DFD diagram (Data Flow Diagram) was built, which is an important tool for modeling the functional structure of the system and its interaction with the environment. The technological solutions were analyzed and the expediency of using the Drupal platform to popularize eco-technologies to the residents of the amalgamated community was substantiated.
 The scientific novelty of the obtained results is based on the study of specific aspects of the popularization of eco-technologies on the example of the site of the amalgamated community and the development of a formal model of the task of popularizing eco-technologies on the web portal of the amalgamated community. The obtained results will make it possible to develop specific recommendations and practical tools for increasing the awareness and activity of citizens in the field of environmental protection.
 Conclusions. The main approaches practiced on these web resources are the promotion of an ecological lifestyle, the provision of access to ecological goods and services, as well as the formation of a community of ecologically conscious citizens. The sites not only popularize the importance of preserving the environment, but also offer specific solutions to reduce the negative impact on nature. The adequate solution for the popularization of modern eco-technologies on the web portals of amalgamated communities is the use of the Drupal platform. It is a reliable, powerful and secure system that you can easily add functionality to the website by installing modules that provide new features. The main advantages of this platform are its reliability, power and security. The official websites of the governments of France, Italy, Poland, Estonia, Latvia and the USA are hosted on the Drupal platform.

An analysis of the responsibilities of environmental designers based on sustainable development

As a newly emerging developing country, China's rapid economic growth has propelled the urbanization process, necessitating continuous adaptation of the entire societal environment. However, without robust legal and regulatory constraints and without rational comprehensive planning and technical guidance, the most significant risk posed is the severe destruction of natural resources and the living environment. The design works created by environmental art designers permeate every corner of our lives, and as a result, these designers bear a greater societal responsibility.

Tantangan dan Peran Pemerintah dalam Pelaksanaan Landreform di Indonesia

Land reform in Indonesia has its ups and downs and in its implementation there are also challenges even though the LoGA has been passed so that the land reform program cannot run smoothly and without obstacles so that this land reform can no longer be carried out in an open and joint way but through a process that is done little by little . In the process of making this journal, the author uses the library research method, which concludes from this journal that the challenges faced in the implementation of land reform include (1) economic and political conditions that are not well established and qualified, (2) strong awareness has not grown between groups. elites, (3) narrow and unequal land ownership, (4) lots of land conflicts and (5) destruction of natural resources. In addition, the role of the government in implementing this land reform is (1) carrying out economic development aimed at justice and people's prosperity, (2) resolving all forms of land conflicts so that ownership rights do not overlap, (3) play an active role in the process of improving natural resources that have been damaged, (4) implementing agrarian law reform, (5) providing free land certificates to the community to realize the agrarian reform program, and apart from that the community must also play an active role in the process of implementing land reform by reporting land to the land office so that rights are protected. ownership of the land.

Experimental Validation of Reinforced Concrete Beam Incorporating Coal Fly Ash and Coal Bottom Ash Using Numerical Analysis

The environmental deterioration affected by the disposal of Coal Bottom Ash (CBA) from power stations has worsened as the energy demand has increased. In addition, the increased demand for concrete leads to an increase in aggregate consumption, which contributing to the depletion of natural resources. To prevent the immense amount of CBA waste and the destruction of natural resources, an initiative has been implemented to replace aggregate with CBA in concrete. The Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams underwent a four-pointbending test. The test was done after 28 days of curingage. Therefore, this study was conducted to study the performance of RC beam incorporating CBA as fine and coarse aggregate replacement. The deflection, maximum load and cracking pattern of RC beam were determined. Beam with 100% coarse coal bottom ash 100% fine coal bottom ash resulted to the maximum load at 88 kN with maximum deflection at 18.87 mm. The RC beams were redesigned using the three-dimensional nonlinear simulation software ABAQUS in enable to identify and compare the simulation and experimental findings. The FEA result shows that ultimate load of FEA waswithin 5% range with the experimental results. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed finite element model accurately predicted the RC beam’s damage behaviour.

The Depoliticization of Ecology: Discourse Analysis of Land Conflict in Punclut, North Bandung Region

This study discusses the narrative and discourse in the conflict over land use in Punclut, Pagerwangi, North Bandung Region. The local community has managed the water catchment area of the North Bandung area for several decades before coming into conflict with the property company PT DAM which obtained a building permit from the government. Departing from Garet Hardin's Tragedy of the Commons, this research explores the causes of natural degradation in Punclut through a discourse on natural resource control by two warring parties: residents and the government. A qualitative approach with discourse analysis is used to answer research questions using data from interviews, mass media, journal articles, and official documents. The findings of this study are that Hardin's solution to the destruction of natural resources needs to be revised to answer the conditions in Punclut, where there is a local community with sociocultural rules and rationality to manage natural resources with ecological awareness. This community offers an alternative political discourse regarding environmental management: "depoliticization of ecology" and participatory conservation. However, the government and companies' discourse on welfare and economic progress always dominates the discourse in the decision-making process.

The legal limits to the destruction of natural resources in non-international armed conflicts: Applying international humanitarian law

AbstractThis article analyzes whether and to what extent energy resources fulfil the definition of military objective within the meaning of international humanitarian law (IHL) and customary IHL. In order to bring conceptual clarity to the duty to protect the natural environment in armed conflict, the article explores the legal limits to the destruction of energy resources (that are part of the natural environment) controlled by armed non-State actors during non-international armed conflicts (NIACs). It examines the practice of the United States, which characterizes the destruction of the natural environment during hostilities as being related to targets that contribute to the “war-sustaining capability” of enemies. Conceptual light is shed on the legality of attacks on oil refineries and installations during NIACs as a matter for IHL.

Financial literacy and consumer culture in behavioral economics as a condition for sustainable development

The purpose of the work is to study the possibilities of improving financial literacy and economic culture, behavioral economics in conjunction with solving the problems of sustainable development in the economic, environmental and social spheres. The apparatus of "behavioral economics" is applied as a theoretical paradigm that takes into account "psychology" to analyze the behavior of subjects of industrial relations. In the work, the author links financial literacy, behavioral economics, economic culture with the problems of sustainable development, and also reveals the conditionality of this development by the need to increase: the culture of thinking, comprehension of moral values, the level of rational consumption. According to the research hypothesis, the solution of these problems is largely due to the quality of the content of the education and enlightenment system. Financial literacy is considered as a condition for increasing the culture of consumption. The research methodology is based on a dialectical approach, an inductive-deductive method, a descriptive analysis of the fundamentals of the behavior of economic agents: theoretical principles of rational choice (maximizing utility) and observed deviations from rational behavior (limited rationality, behavioral effects and systematic errors associated with them); consumer culture, etc. Projects to improve financial literacy in the higher education system are considered as an educational environment that should be used to form predicative thinking, increase economic culture, culture of thinking, financial literacy, consumer culture, as important components in achieving sustainable development. The author concludes that increasing the financial literacy of the population contributes to an increase in the culture of consumption, which consists in satisfying the natural needs of a person as opposed to irrational behavior and degradation-parasitic consumption, which not only lead to losses in the personal budget, but also increase the destruction of natural resources and the destruction of the biosphere. As a result, it is proposed to supplement the program of improving economic culture conducted by national institutions with the topic of improving consumer culture, to expand the content of the general cultural competencies of the Federal State Educational Institution with a more complete knowledge of dialectics, moral value orientations, and the ability of predicative thinking

Decision Tree Analysis of Sustainable and Ethical Food Preferences of Undergraduate Students of Gastronomy and Culinary Arts

The increase in the world’s population is driving consumption, leading to the rapid destruction of natural resources and thus raising concerns about the future state of resources. Agriculture and livestock activities, which can be considered under the heading of food, are one of the most significant factors having effects on sustainability. Animal welfare and ethical food selection have become important issues along with sustainability as people’s awareness has increased. As restaurants are an important part of the food industry, chefs have the power to influence sustainability and ethical food choices and set trends with the choices they make. In this respect, it is important to predict the sustainable and ethical food preferences of gastronomy and culinary arts (GCA) undergraduate program students who have the potential to become the chefs of the future, and to evaluate to what extent they regard chefs as responsible for these issues. In this study, the data obtained from GCA undergraduate students were analysed with the decision tree method using lavaan and rpart packages in the R program. The main objectives of this research are to determine the importance of the independent variables in the decision tree classification and the effects of these independent variables. The analysis suggests that the most important factor in the decision tree classification of the independent variables is the attitude towards sustainable food choice. It is concluded that the independent variables are effective in classifying students as high and low in terms of behavioural intention. It is also seen that attitude towards sustainable food choice is more effective in predicting whether behavioural intention is high or low.

Socio-Economic and Environmental Impact of Community-Based Tourism Development in the Province of Biliran

This study aims to assess community-based tourism development's socio-economic and environmental impact in the Province of Biliran, Philippines. The research employed quantitative and qualitative methods to gain insights into the province's socio-economic and environmental impacts of community-based tourism. Data were collected from key informants, stakeholders, and local tour guides, as well as from surveys and focus group discussions. The results indicate that community-based tourism development has generally benefited the local communities in terms of economic gains, employment opportunities, and improved infrastructure. However, the research also revealed that the development of tourism in the province had had some adverse environmental impacts, such as increased pollution and destruction of natural resources. The study also revealed that local communities had not been adequately involved in the planning and managing of tourism development in the province, which has led to a lack of ownership over the development process and a lack of accountability for the impacts. The study concludes that a more proactive approach to tourism planning and management is needed to ensure that tourism development's socio-economic and environmental impacts are adequately addressed.

‘Ecological justice’: Towards an integrative concept of the protection of creation

This article submits a proposal to replace the term sustainability with the term ‘ecological justice’. This novel expression adds to the term Anthropocene, which largely ignores the significant differences from the perspective of justice concerning which human cultures have profoundly reshaped the Earth. Ecological justice refers to the fact that the Earth is the habitat not only of human beings but also of a multitude of other life forms and includes the rights of nonhuman creatures. Over and above this, the term ecological justice speaks to the rights of marginalised people who suffer because of the destruction of natural resources without having significantly contributed to their misuse. In this sense, a new orientation toward the integrity of creation is necessary to overcome the one-sided technicist and economically determined attitude that has become so typical of modern thinking in the Global North. Churches are challenged to develop an integrative concept of ecological justice from the perspective of the biblical tradition, including recent initiatives such as the ‘Wuppertal Call’.Contribution: To overcome generalising and anthropocentric perspectives, the proposal of this article argues for the preferred term, ‘ecological justice’. This term is inclusive to nonhuman communities in nature, taking into account the effects of environmental destruction on marginalised people. The challenge should be to develop an integrative and unifying concept of ecological justice. The following contribution addresses the question of semantics concerning the key concepts underpinning ecological challenges.
