Hemilamprops chilensis sp. nov. (Crustacea: Cumacea: Lampropidae) from the coast of Chile, with a key to the Chilean Lampropidae and remarks on the status of H. ultimaespei Zimmer, 1921 and H. lotusae Băcescu, 1969.

A new species is described, Hemilamprops chilensis, from Chile. The new species was collected at several localities, from Bahia Herradura in the central part of the country, to Ancud on the island of Chiloe in the south. The depth of collection ranged from 0-30 m. The species with the closest affinity to H. chilensis is the South African species, H. glabrus Day, 1978. The new species is distinguished from all other Hemilamprops by the combination of a short lateral ridge anteriorly on the carapace, maxilliped 3 with the basis much longer than the remainder of the appendage, and the telson bearing 3 terminal setae and 2 pairs of small lateral setae. The identities of H. ultimaespei and H. lotusae are fixed by lectotype and neotype designation, respectively. The lectotype of H. ultimaespei is selected as the neotype of H. lotusae, making H. lotusae a junior objective synonym of H. ultimaespei.

An integrative taxonomic review of the South Asian microhylid genus Uperodon.

Based on a recent molecular phylogenetic study, the South Asian microhylid genus Uperodon (subfamily Microhylinae) currently comprises of 12 valid species that are largely restricted to India and Sri Lanka. Considering the revised generic-level status of its various members, here we review the taxonomy of all known species in this genus and clarify their nomenclatural status and geographical distribution, by integrating evidence from genetics, adult and tadpole morphology, breeding ecology, and bioacoustics. Our molecular analyses of a mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene fragment combined with external and internal morphological studies also revealed a distinct new species in the genus. This species, formally described as Uperodon rohani sp. nov., is endemic to Sri Lanka and widely distributed at lower elevations in the island. For nomenclatural stability of various previously known members, the following actions are also undertaken: (1) redescription of the poorly-defined species Ramanella anamalaiensis Rao (= Uperodon anamalaiensis) and Hylaedactylus montanus Jerdon (= Uperodon montanus); (2) neotype designation for Ramanella anamalaiensis Rao (= Uperodon anamalaiensis), Ramanella minor Rao, Ramanella mormorata Rao (= Uperodon mormorata), and Ramanella triangularis rufeventris Rao; (3) lectotype designation for Callula variegata Stoliczka (= Uperodon variegatus); and (4) synonymization of Ramanella minor Rao with Uperodon anamalaiensis.

Redescription and designation of a neotype for Ophiothrix angulata (Say, 1825 (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea: Ophiotrichidae).

Ophiotrichidae Ljungman, 1867 comprises brittle stars diagnosed by the absence of oral papillae and presence of a cluster of dental papillae covering at least half the height of the dental plate. Ophiothrix Müller & Troschel, 1840 is the largest genus in the family and is composed of many species with a highly variable morphology. Ophiothrix angulata is one species with descriptions showing morphological variation in many of the diagnostic characters stated by Say (1825) in the original description. Say's (1825) type material and specimens studied by him could be located. Thus, in order to elucidate the taxonomic identity of O. angulata and following Article 75 of the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature, here we propose the neotype designation of O. angulata based on topotype specimens from South Carolina, United States. A discussion of the records of O. angulata from the Atlantic Ocean is included. Taxonomic comments on the genus Ophiothrix are also provided.

Case 3743 — Allodaposuchus precedens Nopcsa, 1928 (Crocodyliformes: Eusuchia: Allodaposuchidae): proposed designation of a neotype

The purpose of this application, under Article 75.5 of the Code, is to set aside all type fixations for the crocodyliform Allodaposuchus precedensNopcsa, 1928, and to designate a neotype. The type series of A. precedens includes specimens from the Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) of Valioara, housed at the Magyar Allami Foldtani Intezet (Hungarian Geological Institute) in Budapest, Hungary. The original material includes several cranial and postcranial elements thought to correspond to the same specimen but the attribution of this set of remains as belonging to one individual cannot be confirmed. Therefore, subsequent papers considered only part of this set, a fragmentary skull table, as the lectotype of A.precedens. Given the recent description of several species closely related to A. precedens and the lack of a combination of exclusive characters that can diagnose the species based on the specimens studied by Nopcsa, we request that the Commission set aside all previous type fixations and designate a neotype for A. precedens. The neotype designation is of utmost importance for the objective identification of this species, which is necessary for future phylogenetic analyses and assessments of crocodyliform diversity.

A new cave centipede from Croatia, Eupolybothrus liburnicus sp. n., with notes on the subgenus Schizopolybothrus Verhoeff, 1934 (Chilopoda, Lithobiomorpha, Lithobiidae).

A new species of Eupolybothrus Verhoeff, 1907 discovered in caves of Velebit Mountain in Croatia is described. E. liburnicus sp. n. exhibits a few morphological differences from its most similar congeners, all of which are attributed to the subgenus Schizopolybothrus Verhoeff, 1934, and two approaches to species delimitation using the COI barcode region identify it as distinct from the closely allied E. cavernicolus Stoev & Komerički, 2013. E. spiniger (Latzel, 1888) is redescribed and a lectotype is designated for it as well as E. caesar (Verhoeff, 1899) to stabilize their respective taxonomic status. The subspecies E. acherontis wardaranus Verhoeff, 1937, previously suspected to be a synonym of E. caesar (Verhoeff, 1899), is redescribed and its taxonomy revised after the study of type material whereas the identity of E. acherontis (Verhoeff, 1900) described from a female from southwest Trebinje (Bosnia and Herzegovina) remains unknown. Type material of E. stygis (Folkmanova, 1940) is confirmed to be lost and future designation of neotypes from topotypic specimens is necessary to stabilize its taxonomy. The importance of setal arrangement on the intermediate and 14th tergites and the sexual modifications on the male 15th prefemur for species identification is discussed in the light of present findings, and a review of the species of E. (Schizopolybothrus) that display these traits is also provided.

Neotype designations and supplementary descriptions of Taiwanoppia subtropica Tseng, 1982 and Muliercula chiayiensis Tseng, 1984 (Acari: Oribatida: Oppiidae, Scheloribatidae)

The type materials of oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) included in Tseng’s collections were lost, therefore, to ensure stability in zoological nomenclature, designation of neotypes is necessary. Based on the close morphological similarity of the collected specimens of Taiwanoppia subtropica Tseng, 1982 (Oppiidae) and Muliercula chiayiensis Tseng, 1984 (Scheloribatidae) from Taiwan to the original descriptions, we designate a neotype and paraneotypes for each of these species, and redescribe and illustrate them in detail.

Amblyseius bellatulus Tseng (Acari: Phytoseiidae): neotype designation with first description of a male

Yi-Hsiung Tseng provided fundamental information of phytoseiid fauna in Taiwan. However, according to an exclusive interview, all specimens included in Tseng’s collections were lost after his retirement; therefore, more than 20 holotypes are now lost. To ensure stability in nomenclature, designation of neotypes is thus necessary. In this study, we re-described a known species, Amblyseius bellatulus Tseng 1983, by collecting phytoseiid mites from the original type locality and the entirely of Taiwan. Because the morphology of the collected specimens is highly similar to that of specimens used for describing the species, we designated a neotype and redescribed female specimens, as well as male specimens, which have not been described before.

Checklist of Gymnotiformes (Osteichthyes: Ostariophysi) and catalogue of primary types

ABSTRACT A list of all valid names of species of Neotropical electric fishes (Gymnotiformes) is presented herein. The list is arranged by family and genus and includes all available synonyms. The list is comprehensive through 2016 and includes 240 valid species distributed among 34 genera and five families, including one monotypic genus known only from the fossil record. The presented classification reflects recently published interpretations about the validity of the included names which, in general, are widely accepted. When the validity of a particular name is disputed in recent literature, we followed one of the published interpretations and provide relevant information on the alternate interpretation(s) in the remarks section of that name. Synonymies of some names need to be considered tentative, inasmuch as the types underlying those names are either absent or appear to be based on more than one taxon. First reviser actions (e.g., lectotype and neotype designations, resolution of simultaneous synonyms, etc.) are reported and include erroneous subsequent attempts at problem resolutions. Herein, we include one new first reviser action by selecting Gymnotus aequilabiatus Humboldt, 1805, as type species of Sternopygus because previous attempts to select a type did not follow the provisions of the Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

Review of the genus Defilippia Lioy (Bombyliidae, Diptera) from Egypt, with description of a new species, new combinations, and a neotype designation forD. pharaonis (Paramonov, 1928).

In the present study, five Defilippia species are shown to be represented in Egypt. Two species, D. efflatouni (Bezzi) and D. minos (Meigen), were already included in Defilippia; two species, D. decrepita (Wiedemann), comb. nov., and D. pharaonis (Paramonov), comb. nov., are newly combined to Defilippia; and a new species, D. elbayensis, sp. nov., is described herein. Homeotypes of Exoprosopa flava Paramonov, 1928 and Defilippia decrepita (Wiedemann, 1828), comb. nov. have been examined and it was found that the two species are not synonymous and Exoprosopa flava Paramonov, 1928, stat. rev. is rather a distinct valid species in its original genus Exoprosopa. A neotype for D. pharaonis (Paramonov, 1928) is designated.

Re-description of Orchestia stephenseni Cecchini, 1928: designation of neotype and senior synonym to Orchestia constricta A. Costa, 1853 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Talitridae) by Reversal of Precedence.

The beach flea Orchestia stephenseni was originally described by Cecchini (1928), and successively by Karaman (1973). The description of this species will be herein revised by focusing on the variation of the gnathopod 2 in males, as detected during its growth period. An analysis of DNA Barcoding was performed to support the assignment of the taxonomic species to five morphotypes. As the type specimen has not yet been designated, a neotype is assigned. The name of the species is here presented as a valid name as it satisfies the requirements of a Reversal of the Principle of Priority: Orchestia stephenseni takes precedence over the objective synonym Orchestia constricta A. Costa, 1853, in accordance with Article 23.9.2. of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Orchestia stephenseni Cecchini, 1928 becomes nomen protectum, and Orchestia constricta nomen oblitum. The results presented in this paper also support the status of Orchestia stephenseni as a Mediterranean endemic species, thereby rejecting previous Atlantic records. The synonymies for O. stephenseni are revised accordingly.

Corvoheteromeyenia Ezcurra de Drago, 1979 (Spongillidae, Porifera): Genus review with proposal of neotype of Corvoheteromeyenia heterosclera (Ezcurra de Drago, 1974).

Corvoheteromeyenia Ezcurra de Drago, 1979 (Spongillidae) is endemic to the Neotropical Region and was erected to comprise C. australis (Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago, 1966) and C. heterosclera (Ezcurra de Drago, 1974). However, the distinction between these species was not well-established and the type materials were not deposited in the collections as otherwise indicated in the original descriptions. Thus, in order to elucidate their specific status, this paper provides a review of the genus and proposes a neotype designation of Corvoheteromeyenia heterosclera, following Article 75 of the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999). A total of 41 specimens were analyzed and identified as belonging to Corvoheteromeyenia. Based on the literature and additional specimens, the redescription of C. australis and C. heterosclera is presented. The acanthoxea microscleres were stated as the distinctive character of both, but are present only in C. heterosclera. Corvoheteromeyenia sanidastosclera Pinheiro, Silva & Calheira, 2015, is distinct from congeners by the presence of sanidaster gemmuloscleres and also differ from C. heterosclera by the absence of acanthoxea microscleres. A key to species of Corvoheteromeyenia is provided.

Neotype designation for Calotes versicolor Daudin, 1802 (Sauria: Agamidae) with notes on its systematics.

Calotes versicolor Daudin, 1802 is one of the most widespread agamid lizard species which was described without a locality. The type specimen of the species has long been considered lost; however most workers considered Pondicherry as the type locality for the species. Studies by Zug et al. 2006 confirmed that C. versicolor is a complex of multiple species which necessitates fixing type locality and specimen for the species in order to resolve the systematics of the species complex. An adult male from Pondicherry was collected and is here designated as the neotype. A re-description of the species is provided along with notes on systematics of the species.

The genus Pirenella Gray, 1847 (= Cerithideopsilla Thiele, 1929) (Gastropoda: Potamididae) in the Indo-West Pacific region and Mediterranean Sea.

Members of the genus Pirenella are abundant inhabitants of intertidal sedimentary shores, often found in association with mangroves, on the continental margins of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, and eastern Mediterranean Sea. Until recently, four morphological species were recognised in the tropical Indo-West Pacific region and classified in the genus Cerithideopsilla, while another species occupying the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean was classified as Pirenella conica. Molecular phylogenetic analysis has demonstrated that all these species are congeneric and here it is shown that the valid name for the genus is Pirenella. A recently published molecular study recognised a total of 16 species and the present work is a systematic account of these species. Of the 16, nine are described as new. Other significant nomenclatural acts are: fixation of type species of Pirenella as Pirenella mammillata J.E. Gray, 1847; designation of neotypes for Cerithium alatum Philippi, 1849, Cerithium microptera Kiener, 1841, Cerithium conicum Blainville, 1829, Pirenella mammillata J.E. Gray, 1847 and Murex cingulatus Gmelin, 1791; designation of lectotype for Cerithium retiferum G.B. Sowerby II, 1855. The species accounts include full synonymies, detailed descriptions of shells (based on 831 museum samples), distribution records and maps, reviews of life history, of habitat and of ecology, and some images of radulae. Details of shell sculpture are adequate for the diagnosis of most species. Distorted shells are common in some populations and are suggested to represent parasitised individuals. Some species are pests of fishponds in Southeast Asia and P. conica is the intermediate host of a trematode responsible for the human disease heterophyiasis, while others are threatened by habitat destruction.

The type series of N. pompilius includes specimens in the Linnean Society of London, the University Museum in Uppsala, and specimens figured by pre-Linnaean authors indicated by reference by Linnaeus (1758). The original material includes juveniles, specimens with unknown provenance, modified specimens and carved ornaments. Given the poor quality of the material and the lack of clarity as to its type status, we apply to the Commission asking to set aside all previous type fixations and designate a neotype. The neotype designation is of utmost importance for accurate identification of this species, which is necessary for its trade control and protection.

Redescription of Rhinogobius similis Gill 1859 (Gobiidae: Gobionellinae), the type species of the genus Rhinogobius Gill 1859, with designation of the neotype

Rhinogobius similis Gill 1859, type species of the genus, is redescribed (with neotype designation) based on seven specimens collected from the putative type locality (Shimoda, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan). The species, previously known as R. giurinus (Rutter 1897) (a junior synonym), can be distinguished from its congeners by having the following combination of characters: I, 8 second dorsal-fin rays; 18–19 pectoral-fin rays; 8–12 predorsal scales; 29–31 longitudinal scales; 11 + 15 = 26 vertebrae; predorsal squamation comprising large ctenoid scales, reaching anteriorly to near posterior margin of eye; 5–6 short transverse rows of sensory papillae ventral to eye; several short transverse rows of sensory papillae between two longitudinal rows of sensory papillae on cheek; a dark brownish gray reticulation or reddish oblique lines on head but not on its ventral surface; a black spot, as large as pupil, dorsoposteriorly on pectoral-fin base; a longitudinal series of alternating large and small black blotches on midlateral body; two to four irregular longitudinal rows of small sky-blue spots on midlateral body when alive.

The purpose of this application under Articles 78.1 and 81.1 of the Code is to suppress for nomenclatural purposes the two-volume work ‘The White-cheeked geese: Branta canadensis, B. maxima, B. ‘lawrensis’, B. hutchinsii, B. leucopareia, and B. minima. Taxonomy, ecophysiographic relationships, biogeography, and evolutionary considerations,’ by Harold C. Hanson. Reasons for suppression are the work's many confounded new taxon designations, inappropriately chosen types, inadequately diagnosed new taxa, variable and confused authorships, and a flawed neotype designation. Together they serve as evidence of general nomenclatural dysfunction. If not suppressed, Hanson's work will become a source of destabilisation the nomenclature of the Branta canadensis complex.

Two new species of Grylloblatta Walker, 1914 (Grylloblattodea: Grylloblattidae) from western North America, and a neotype designation for G. rothi Gurney 1953.

Grylloblatta rothi Gurney, 1953 is redescribed and a neotype is designated from Cultus Mountain in the Oregon Cascades, U.S.A. Two new species of Grylloblatta are described, bringing the total number of Grylloblatta species to 15. Grylloblatta chintimini new species is described from Marys Peak in the Coast Range of Western Oregon, where it occurs on snowpack near the 1250 m summit. Grylloblatta newberryensis new species is described from Newberry Volcano in Central Oregon, where it is associated with snowfields overlying geologically-young lava flows. Morphological characters, primarily derived from male genitalia, are presented to diagnose these species and differentiate them from other Grylloblatta spp. in Oregon, Washington, and California. Molecular sequences from the cytochrome oxidase subunit II gene suggest that significant divergence has occurred among these species and provide a tool to aid identification of juvenile and female specimens.
