Level of Public Knowledge Regarding Dental Radiographic Examination in Medan Perjuangan District

Aids in establishing the diagnosis, radiography also plays an important role in determining treatment plans and evaluating the results of treatment that has been carried out previously. The purpose of this study is to find out the extent of the level of knowledge of the community in Medan Perjuangan District regarding dental radiography. The type of research used is descriptive survey research with a cross sectional approach. The population of this study is the community in Medan Perjuangan District. The sample size is 200 people who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. By using questionnaires and analyzed descriptively. The result of this study is that the level of public knowledge regarding the uses, benefits, effects and dose limits as well as radiation protection of dental radiography obtained very few results that can be answered correctly. The satisfaction of this study is that the level of public knowledge in Medan Perjuangan District regarding dental radiography examinations individually obtained results in the good category of 2.0%, the fair category of 14.0%, and the poor category of 84.0%.

Detection of Oronasal Fistula Using a Fluorescent Water Passing Test.

The confirmation of a connection between the oral and nasal cavities provides a definitive diagnosis for an oronasal fistula (ONF). However, visual detection is difficult in patients with small fistulas. This study examined whether fluorescein sodium could be used to detect small ONFs. The study included 25 dogs that underwent dental examination and had confirmed periodontal pockets at the Amica Pet Clinic, Japan, between 2020 and 2022. Saline containing fluorescein sodium was injected into the periodontal pocket, termed a fluorescent "water-passing test," followed by detection of fluid discharge from the external naris using an examination light. Of the 25 dogs, 13 showed symptoms consistent with an ONF and of these, 12 were positive and one was negative on the fluorescent water-passing test. Of the 12 asymptomatic dogs, 3 tested positive and 9 tested negative on the fluorescent water-passing test. The fluorescent water-passing test enhanced visibility and facilitated the detection of small volumes of the discharged fluid. The results of this study confirmed the fluorescent water-passing test was useful for the detection of small ONFs.

Mother-baby sleeping patterns and its association with malocclusion among children: An analytical cross-sectional study

: Scientific literature is limited about the different mother-baby sleeping patterns in India and its possible association with the development of malocclusion. The prevalent mother-baby sleeping patterns were assessed in a cosmopolitan city of India with an aim to study if any type of sleeping pattern predisposes to the development of malocclusion.: 2150 children aged 2-6 years were included in this study. A questionnaire to determine type of sleeping pattern, duration of breastfeeding and presence of sucking habits was completed by the parents. The children then underwent a dental examination to evaluate presence of malocclusion which was recorded utilising the Baby‑Risk of Malocclusion Assessment (ROMA) Index.: Three different types of sleeping patterns were observed. The risk of developing malocclusion was found to be low when the baby and the mother shared the same bed for atleast 18 months from birth of the infant. When the duration of child and mother sharing the same bed reduced below 18 months, the child was found to have an increased incidence of non -nutritive sucking habits, had higher Baby ROMA scores and showed presence of at least one type of malocclusion. : Children co-sleeping with their mothers in the same bed for more than 18 months are observed to have fewer negative sucking habits, and a decreased incidence of malocclusion when compared to children who slept alone in a different room.

Hemodynamic periodontal changes in the treatment of chronic generalized periodontitis using polarized polychromatic light

Background: Ineffective treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases is a significant medical and social issue. Previous research have shown that improved vascular response and local immunity activation are crucial for the treatment of periodontal diseases. This can be accomplished using polarized polychromatic light. However, the effect of polarized polychromatic light on microhemocirculation in periodontal tissues is poorly understood. Aim: To assess microhemodynamic changes in periodontal tissues in the treatment of mild chronic generalized periodontitis using polarized polychromatic light. Materials and Methods: A complex dental examination and treatment were performed in 70 patients (32 males and 38 females) with active chronic generalized periodontitis aged 20 to 59 years. The study had two groups (35 subjects each) based on treatment approaches. Group 1 received professional oral care and a course of antimicrobial therapy using Dentamet dental gel. Group 2 received antimicrobial therapy in combination with polarized polychromatic light therapy (wavelength 480–3,400 nm, power 40 mW/cm2, flux density 2.4 J/cm2 per minute, polarization 95%). Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to assess hemodynamics before treatment, as well as 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. Results: Group 1 demonstrated an improvement in microcirculation parameters for up to 3 months (p=0.0027). In group 2, an improvement was observed for up to one year (p=0.0455). Conclusion: Polarized polychromatic light therapy in mild chronic generalized periodontitis improves microhemocirculation in periodontal tissues, increasing the efficacy of drug therapy.

Performance of ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4o in the Japanese National Dental Examination.

In this study, we compared the performance of ChatGPT-3.5 to that of ChatGPT-4o in the context of the Japanese National Dental Examination, which assesses clinical reasoning skills and dental knowledge, to determine their potential usefulness in dental education. ChatGPT's performance was assessed using 1399 (55% of the exam) of 2520 questions from the Japanese National Dental Examinations (111-117). The 1121 excluded questions (45% of the exam) contained figures or tables that ChatGPT could not recognize. The questions were categorized into 18 different subjects based on dental specialty. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software, with McNemar's test applied to assess differences in performance. A significant improvement was noted in the percentage of correct answers from ChatGPT-4o (84.63%) compared with those from ChatGPT-3.5 (45.46%), demonstrating enhanced reliability and subject knowledge. ChatGPT-4o consistently outperformed ChatGPT-3.5 across all dental subjects, with significant improvements in subjects such as oral surgery, pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology. Heatmap analysis revealed that ChatGPT-4o provided more stable and higher correct answer rates, especially for complex subjects. This study found that advanced natural language processing models, such as ChatGPT-4o, potentially have sufficiently advanced clinical reasoning skills and dental knowledge to function as a supplementary tool in dental education and exam preparation.

OPTIMIZATION OF RADIATION PROTECTION IN PATIENTS THROUGH IMPLEMENTATION OF LOCAL DIAGNOSTIC REFERENCE LEVEL (DRL) IN PANORAMIC DENTAL EXAMINATION IN RADIOLOGY INSTALLATION OF PROF. DR. MARGONO SOEKARJO HOSPITAL

One of the principles of radiation protection is optimization. Optimization is done to make the dose received as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) by considering economic and social factors. Implementation of radiation protection optimization can be done with dose management through the Local Diagnostic Reference Level (DRL). In recent years, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) has set the Indonesian DRL value for several X-ray modalities, including dental panoramic. This study was motivated by panoramic patient dose audit data using the auto mode exposure factor, which operators often use. The method for determining the manual mode exposure factor is carried out by comparing the image quality of the current variations of 6.3 mA, 8 mA, 10 mA, 13 mA, and 16 mA with a fixed voltage of 66 kV and a time of 14.1 seconds. The local DRL value was obtained by comparing the dental panoramic auto mode measurements with manual mode using certain exposure factors according to the recommendations in the initial study using a head phantom. This study used 100 patient data with adult human criteria aged over 15. The results obtained from the initial study and questionnaires in manual mode were the values that had the highest CNR and SNR at a current variation of 10 mA. The exposure factor was then used to collect patient data. The local DRL value obtained for auto mode was 83.35 mGy cm2; in manual mode, it was 57.7 mGy cm2. Manual mode exposure factors in dental panoramic examinations affected the implementation of local DRL values with a decrease of 30.77% from auto mode. The use of manual mode in dental panoramic examinations significantly reduces the radiation dose received by patients, so the use of manual mode is one of the steps to optimize radiation protection. Evaluation of Periodontitis and Fusobacterium nucleatum Among Colorectal Cancer Patients: An Observational Cross-Sectional Study.

Periodontitis has been associated with an increased risk of CRC, as well as a worse prognosis due to increased inflammation mediators and carcinogenic factors. Moreover, direct and indirect virulence factors from periodontal pathogens, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum, could play a pivotal role in malignant transformation and progression. This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the presence and the stage of periodontitis in a cohort of patients with CRC. The secondary aim is to assess the presence of F. nucleatum and its relationship with patients' general characteristics, concomitant pathologies, tumor characteristics, and drug therapy. Patients affected by CRC underwent dental examination and periodontal charting with the "North Carolina" probe to assess the presence and stage of periodontitis, according to the new classification of periodontal diseases of the World Workshop of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) 2017. F. nucleatum presence was assessed by a dorsal tongue swab and related to the patient's general characteristics, concomitant pathologies, tumor characteristics, and drug therapy. Periodontal disease was found in 94.3% of I/II CRC stage patients and 100% of III/IV CRC stage patients. Severe periodontitis was found in 76% of the advanced CRC stage and 87.9% of patients with initial CRC, while initial periodontitis was found in 12.1% of initial CRC and 24% of late CRC stages, respectively, without significant differences. F. nucleatum presence showed no correlation between the patient's and tumor's characteristics, comorbidities, and drug assumed. Periodontal disease showed a high prevalence among CRC patients. Moreover, severe periodontitis has a higher prevalence in CRC patients compared to initial periodontitis. F. nucleatum presence was unrelated to CRC stage, site, other comorbidities, and drug therapies. With these data, it is not possible to admit a direct relationship between CRC and periodontal disease, but further case-control studies must be carried out to further prove this aspect. Preventive and operative targeted strategies to maintain a healthy oral status are suggested in CRC patients.

Diagnostic significance of the method of computerized joint vibration analysis in studying the functional state of temporomandibular joints

polyetiology, progressive course and high frequency of relapses is one of the urgent problems of modern dentistry. Different conceptual approaches to the analysis of etiological and pathogenetic aspects of the development of dysfunctional TMJ disorders predetermine the increased interest in the search for highly informative diagnostic methods, especially at the stage of preclinical manifestations.Goal. Evaluation of possibilities of computerized joint vibration analysis method in diagnostics of TMJ functional state.Materials and methods. The study involved 42 people of both sexes with physiologic types of bite, preserved tooth rows, no signs of functional disorders in TMJ and masticatory muscles. The patients underwent clinical dental examination, «Hamburg test», selective grinding of teeth, and measurement of mouth opening amplitude. Joint vibration analysis was performed on the hardware-software complex «BioPAK» with registration of TMJ noise oscillations according to the following indices: «Total Integral», «High Integral», «Low Integral», «Ratio». A flow chart (Ishigaki S. et al., 1993) was used to interpret the numerical values. The functional state of TMJ was de-termined according to the flowchart using numerical parameters in accordance with the classification of TMJ disorders (Wilkes С.Н., 1989).Results. In patients with physiologic occlusion, according to joint vibration analysis, Me «Total Integral» of the right TMJ was 11.7 PaHz, left TMJ – 12.6 PaHz, [Q-25; Q-75] – [9.3; 15.1] PaHz and [10.5; 18.3] PaHz respectively, Me «High Integral» of the right TMJ – 1.3 PaHz, left TMJ – 1.4 PaHz, [Q-25; Q-75] – [1.0; 1.8] PaHz and [1.2; 2.1] PaHz respectively, with no statistically significant (p≤0.05) differences in the studied parameters between the right and left TMJ.Conclusions. The diagnosis of «structurally intact» TMJ, corresponding to stage I of the American classification of TMJ disorders (Wilkes S.N., 1989) in people with physiologic types of bite, is confirmed by the numerical values [Q-25; Q-75] of «Total Integral», «High Integral» (block diagram of S. Ishigaki et al., 1993), the degree of maximum mouth opening [43; 50] mm in the absence of pronounced signs of facial asymmetry.

Comparing the dental knowledge of large language models.

Introduction With the advancement of artificial intelligence, large language models (LLMs) have emerged as technology that can generate human-like text across various domains. They hold vast potential in the dental field, able to be integrated into clinical dentistry, administrative dentistry, and for student and patient education. However, the successful integration of LLMs into dentistry is reliant on the dental knowledge of the models used, as inaccuracies can lead to significant risks in patient care and education.Aims We are the first to compare different LLMs on their dental knowledge through testing the accuracy of different model responses to Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) questions.Methods We include closed-source and open-source models and analysed responses to both 'patient box' style board questions and more traditional, textual-based, multiple-choice questions.Results For the entire INBDE question bank, ChatGPT-4 had the highest dental knowledge, with an accuracy of 75.88%, followed by Claude-2.1 with 66.38% and then Mistral-Medium at 54.77%. There was a statistically significant difference in performance across all models.Conclusion Our results highlight the high potential of LLM integration into the dental field, the importance of which LLM is chosen when developing new technologies, and the limitations that must be overcome before unsupervised clinical integration can be adopted.

Validity of the self-reported number of teeth in independent older people in Japan

BackgroundIn questionnaire surveys, questions about self-reported number of teeth (SRNT) are often used as a measure oral health. This study investigated the validity of SRNT in older Japanese people.MethodsIn total, 4984 75- and 80-year-old patients who underwent dental examinations were enrolled. A self-administered questionnaire that asked about the number of teeth was used in the analysis. The percentage agreement and kappa value were calculated for the agreement between SRNT and observed numbers of teeth. To identify factors that affect the reliability of SRNT, a logistic regression analysis was performed using correctness of SRNT as the dependent variable.ResultsAmong the 3950 participants who responded as to whether they had ≥ 20 teeth, the degree of agreement was 92.9% (kappa value 0.856, p < 0.001) in an objective evaluation. Of the 2621 participants who reported their numbers of teeth, the SRNT and observed number of teeth matched in 57.5% (kappa value 0.559; p < 0.001). Observed number of teeth and annual dental checkup had a significant effect on the accuracy of SRNT. Multivariate logistic regression analysis, with the agreement between SRNT and the observed number of teeth (i.e. whether the number of teeth exceeded 20) as the dependent variable, showed that the observed number of teeth, use of interdental cleaning tools, and annual dental checkup were significantly associated with the agreement between SRNT and the actual number of teeth. In multivariate analysis with tooth number agreement (± 1 tooth) as the dependent variable, the observed number of teeth and use of interdental cleaning tools were significantly associated with the agreement between SRNT and the observed number of teeth.ConclusionAlthough SRNT did not perfectly match the observed numbers of teeth, the results of this study imply that the SRNT of older people is reliable and useful in epidemiological studies.

Postoperative acute psychological complications following dental procedures under general anesthesia in uncooperative children

BackgroundTo ensure comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia(GA) is a viable option, postoperative complications must be minimized. This study investigates the incidence and determinants of acute psychological complications following comprehensive dental treatment under general anesthesia in uncooperative children.Materials and methodsThis study included 71 healthy children aged 5 to 10 years who exhibited uncooperative behavior during dental examinations. All participants received parental consent. Data was collected using a checklist encompassing demographic information, treatment details, physical complications, and psychological complications. The Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale faces version (MCDASf) questionnaire was administered pre-operatively and five days post-operatively.ResultsThe first day exhibited the most pronounced physical and psychological complications. While the most physical complications had diminished by the fifth day, the psychological effects remained permanent. Tooth extraction was associated with a statistically significant impact on fear of being left alone(P < 0.001), unspecified fear (P = 0.001), nyctophobia (P = 0.001), and excessive crying(P < 0.001).ConclusionPsychological complications persisted for a longer period compared to physical complications. The number of extracted teeth under GA had a significant influence on children’s fear.

Effectiveness of a Sugar Consumption Prevention Program in the First Year of Life on the Occurrence of Early Childhood Caries: A Multicentric Randomized Trial in Brazil.

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a nutritional counseling program for mothers of newborns to prevent sugar consumption in the first year of the child's life on the occurrence of Early Childhood Caries (ECC). A multicentric randomized clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03841123) was conducted in three state capitals of Brazil (n=516). Mothers were randomly assigned to the intervention group (IG) or control group (CG) after delivery. The IG received face-to-face nutritional counseling based on UNICEF dietary guidelines, followed by monthly phone calls. The CG received standard counseling. Dietary intake was measured through structured questionnaires and 24-hour recalls at six and 12 months. Calibrated dentists performed a dental clinical examination for ECC diagnosis after the children completed their first year of life. The prevalence of ECC was 17.4% in the overall sample (49/290). The number of affected teeth ranged from 0 to 6 (mean 0.43). The IG had a 2.4 times probability of not consuming sugar in the first six months of the child's life (RR 2.44; 95% CI 1.18-5.00) and they had Fa significantly lower mean number of sweet items consumed at 12 months (p=0.016). No significant differences between groups were found concerning the occurrence of ECC (RR 1.33; 95% CI 0.79-2.25) or the number of teeth affected by caries (p=0.273). The intervention to prevent and reduce sugar intake in the first year of life was not effective at reducing the occurrence of early childhood caries or the number of teeth with carious lesions.

Evaluating the Diagnostic Inter-rater Reliability Between Virtual and In-person Sick-call Examinations at a Military Dental Treatment Facility.

Teledentistry, also known as "virtual" dental examinations, is an innovative approach to increasing access to care. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic inter-rater reliability between virtual and in-person examinations for patients seeking emergency dental care (sick call) at a military dental treatment facility. One hundred subjects received both virtual and in-person examinations on the same day, in random order. The virtual examiner and subject were stationed in separate rooms and used only a laptop equipped with a camera, microphone, and speaker to complete the virtual exam. In contrast, the in-person examiner had access to all standard care modalities in a dental treatment room. After the first encounter, the subject proceeded to the corresponding virtual or in-person exam, and both examiners determined a diagnosis. Inter-rater agreement was determined between the two encounters for both diagnosis specialty category and diagnostic code using the Kappa coefficient. The results of the inter-rater analyses showed a Kappa score of 0.644 for the diagnosis specialty category (P < .001) and a Kappa score of 0.714 for diagnostic codes (P < .001). Both analyses indicated "substantial" agreement. We conclude that teledentistry can be an effective tool for determining a diagnosis and improving access to care for dental emergencies at military dental treatment facilities.

Effect of malocclusion severity on oral health and its correlation with socioeconomical status in Iranian adolescents

BackgroundThis study aimed to assess the effect of malocclusion severity according to the Index of Treatment Need (IOTN) on oral health (dental caries and gingivitis), and its correlation with socioeconomic status (SES) in Iranian adolescents.MethodsThis descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on adolescents between 10 and 16 years in Tehran city, who underwent clinical dental examination. The Dental Health Component (DHC) of the IOTN was used to assess the severity of malocclusion. The DMFT index was calculated to assess dental caries, and the gingival index (GI) was calculated for gingival health assessment. For oral hygiene assessment, the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S) was calculated, and a questionnaire was used.ResultsTotally, 306 adolescents participated in this study. The frequency of IOTN grades was 88 (28.8%), 89 (26.1%) ,49 (16%), 60 (19.6%), and 29 (9.5%) for grades 1 to 5, respectively. The multinomial logistic regression showed that by an increase in OHI-S score, the odds of having IOTN grade 4 compared to grade 1 increased. Postgraduate parental level of education decreased the odds of having IOTN grade 4 compared to grade 1. Furthermore, there was an inverse correlation between oral hygiene practice and the odds of having IOTN grade 5 compared to grade 1.ConclusionsMalocclusion may hinder oral hygiene practice, and resultantly increase plaque accumulation. This risk may be amplified in children with lower SES, highlighting the need for preventive and educational oral health programs.

Maintenance of Dental and Oral Health of High Class Students Using Virtual Reality Box Media (Study at SDN Rejosopinggir Tembelang Jombang)

Dental caries is one of the problems related to oral health that can affect overall health. The state of oral and dental health can be ascertained using the initial dental and oral examination data from the Jatiwates Tembelang Jombang Health Center. Specifically, the number of dental caries among high school students at SDN Rejosopinggir Tembelang Jombang, which shows an average DMF-T index of 5.9, can be used to inform this determination. A high DMF-T index falls between 4.5 and 6.5, according to the WHO. The problem in this study is the high school students in SDN Rejosopinggir Tembelang, Jombang Regency, had a high rate of dental cavities in 2023. The purpose of this study is to find out the difference in oral and dental health maintenance between high school students at SDN Rejosopinggir before and after using Virtual Reality Box material. The type of research is called a quasi-experiment, and it aims to enroll 43 students. The data collection method used is a questionnaire. Data findings are summarized and presented in tabular form as part of the data analysis technique. The results of the study is analysis of the Wilcoxon test showed that the ρ value was 0.000&lt;0.05 with a pretest value of Mean±SD 57.67±12.216, and a posttest value of Mean±SD 77.91±11.032, then H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected, meaning that Students' understanding of maintaining their oral and dental health can be improved by the Virtual Reality Box media.

Parental awareness and dental health behavior of children with congenital heart disease, with diabetes mellitus, or undergoing anti-cancer treatment, compared to healthy children.

Children with chronic diseases tend to experience a considerably higher burden of oral disease compared to their healthy peers. Low awareness of the impact of systemic diseases on oral health, lack of motivation, and discomfort may render the maintenance of good oral hygiene challenging. We conducted a study of four groups of parents: of children with congenital heart disease (CHD), with diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM), and undergoing anti-cancer treatment (ACT); and a control group of healthy children (C). We aimed to compare between the groups, parental attitudes and knowledge of their children's oral health, and their reports of their children's dental habits. Parents who arrived with their children for routine check-ups at three main clinics: cardiology, endocrinology, and hematology-oncology were asked to respond to a questionnaire regarding their children's oral and dental health. A total of 287 questionnaires were collected from 76 parents of children with CHD, 100 parents of children with DM, 50 parents of children undergoing ACT, and 61 parents who comprised group C. Compared to the CHD and DM groups, the ACT group demonstrated significantly more awareness of the importance of maintaining oral and dental health following diagnosis of their children's medical condition. Mothers' education was found to correlate with dental health knowledge. Most children in the DM and C groups had previous dental examinations, compared to only half in the CHD and ACT groups. A higher proportion of the children in the C than the other groups brushed teeth twice daily. The groups were similar in their consumption of sugary drinks, and of sweets and snacks. The children's specialist physicians were the main source of information on oral health, especially in the ACT group. Although most of the parents reported awareness to the oral health aspects of their children's disease, only part of them reported that their children visited dentists, and brushed their teeth twice daily. For the parents of children with CHD, DM, and ACT, their children's treating specialists were the primary source of information regarding oral health. This highlights the importance of clear and continuous communication between pediatric specialists and dentists.

Knowledge, Attitudes Regarding Dental and Oral Health With The Number of Funtioning Teeth: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Elderly people are expected to have a minimum of 20 functioning teeth so that mastication, speech, and aesthetic functions are assumed to be normal. However, in reality, tooth loss still occurs in some elderly people, so they only have less than 20 functioning teeth. Problem: Low percentage of functioning teeth in the elderly. Research Objective: To determine the relationship between knowledge and attitudes about dental and oral health with the number of functioning teeth in the elderly at Integrated Service Post Melati VI, Karanglo Village, Mojowarno District, Jombang Regency. Method: This type of research is cross-sectional analytical research. The sample of respondents was 52 elderly people. The research instrument to measure knowledge and attitudes about dental and oral health in the elderly uses a questionnaire sheet and a dental examination sheet to identify the number of functioning teeth. The data obtained were analyzed using non-parametric tests with chi square. Results: There was no relationship between knowledge about dental and oral health and the number of functioning teeth. The Bidirectional Effects of Periodontal Disease and Oral Dysbiosis on Gut Inflammation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flares can lead to excessive morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to determine whether oral dysbiosis/periodontal disease (PD) is common in IBD and is associated with disease activity in IBD. This single-center, prospective, cross-sectional, proof-of-concept, observational study assessed the frequency of periodontal inflammatory disease and interrogated oral and stool microbiota using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of active-IBD (aIBD), inactive-IBD (iIBD), and healthy controls (HC). Questionnaires assessed diet, alcohol usage, oral hygiene behavior, and disease activity. A subset of participants underwent comprehensive dental examinations to evaluate PD. PD was severer in aIBD subjects than in HC, as aIBD had poorer quality diets (lower Mediterranean diet scores) than iIBD and HC. Significant differences in microbial community structure were observed in unstimulated saliva, stimulated saliva, gingiva, and stool samples, primarily between aIBD and HC. Saliva from aIBD had higher relative abundances of putative oral pathobionts from the genera Streptococcus, Granulicatella, Rothia, and Actinomyces relative to HC, despite similar oral hygiene behaviors between groups. Our study suggests that patients with aIBD have severer periodontal disorders and higher relative abundances of putative "pro-inflammatory" microbiota in their oral cavity, despite normal oral hygiene behaviors. Our data are consistent with the potential presence of an oral-gut inflammatory-axis that could trigger IBD flare-ups in at-risk patients. Routine dental health assessments in all IBD patients should be encouraged as part of the health maintenance of IBD and as a potential strategy to decrease the risk of IBD flares.

Performance of ChatGPT and Dental Students on Concepts of Periodontal Surgery.

As a large language model, chat generative pretrained transformer (ChatGPT) has provided a valuable tool for various medical scenarios with its interactive dialogue-based interface. However, there is a lack of studies on ChatGPT's effectiveness in handling dental tasks. This study aimed to compare the knowledge and comprehension abilities of ChatGPT-3.5/4 with that of dental students about periodontal surgery. A total of 134 dental students participated in this study. We designed a questionnaire consisting of four questions about the inclination for ChatGPT, 25 multiple-choice, and one open-ended question. As the comparison of ChatGPT-3.5 and 4, the question about the inclination was removed, and the rest was the same. The response time of ChatGPT-3.5 and 4 as well as the comparison of ChatGPT-3.5 and 4' performances with dental students were measured. Regarding students' feedback on the open-ended question, we also compared the outcomes of ChatGPT-4' and teacher's review. On average, ChatGPT-3.5 and 4 required 3.63 ± 1.18 s (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.14, 4.11) and 12.49 ± 7.29 s (95% CI, 9.48, 15.50), respectively (p < 0.001) for each multiple-choice question. For these 25 questions, the accuracy was 21.51 ± 2.72, 14 and 20 for students, ChatGPT-3.5 and 4, respectively. Furthermore, the outcomes of ChatGPT-4's review were consistent with that of teacher's review. For dental examinations related to periodontal surgery, ChatGPT's accuracy was not yet comparable to that of the students. Nevertheless, ChatGPT shows promise in assisting students with the curriculum and helping practitioners with clinical letters and reviews of students' textual descriptions.
