Fluorescent nanoplastics increase the toxic effects of Graphene oxide nanoparticles in freshwater algae Scenedesmus obliquus

The increased usage of Graphene oxide (GO) in various industrial applications led to their entry into freshwater systems. Other secondary contaminants like nanoplastics (NPs) often co-exist with GO in the environment. This study examines the possible role of fluorescent nanoplastics (FNPs) in modifying the toxic effects of GO on freshwater algae Scenedesmus obliquus. Selected concentrations of GO (0.1, 1, and 10 mg L−1) were combined with a fixed concentration of FNPs (1 mg L−1) to perform combinational toxicity tests on algae. FNPs significantly enhanced the toxic effects of GO in the mixtures in comparison with the pristine GO. In addition to the cytotoxic effects, oxidative stress parameters like total ROS generation and malondialdehyde (MDA) production also increased in the case of the combined pollutants. The antioxidant enzymatic activities like catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the cells were also assessed. Algal exposure to the pristine pollutants and their mixture led to a notable decrease in photosynthetic activities in the cells, with the mixed pollutants aggravating the loss of activity. The interactive toxic effects of the contaminants when present in mixtures were evaluated using Abbotts' Independent action modelling. Furthermore, optical microscopic images revealed the morphological changes in the algal cells after exposure to the contaminants both in the pristine and combined forms.

Novel technique for the ultra-sensitive detection of hazardous contaminants using an innovative sensor integrated with a bioreactor

This study introduces an evaluation methodology tailored for bioreactors, with the aim of assessing the stress experienced by algae due to harmful contaminants released from antifouling (AF) paints. We present an online monitoring system equipped with an ultra-sensitive sensor that conducts non-invasive measurements of algal culture's optical density and physiological stage through chlorophyll fluorescence signals. By coupling the ultra-sensitive sensor with flash-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, we examined the dynamic fluorescence changes in the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii when exposed to biocides. Over a 24-h observation period, increasing concentrations of biocides led to a decrease in photosynthetic activity. Notably, a substantial reduction in the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry (FV/FM) was observed within the first hour of exposure. Subsequently, we detected a partial recovery in FV/FM; however, this recovery remained 50% lower than that of the controls. Integrating the advanced submersible sensor with fluorescence decay kinetics offered a comprehensive perspective on the dynamic alterations in algal cells under the exposure to biocides released from antifouling coatings. The analysis of fluorescence relaxation kinetics revealed a significant shortening of the fast and middle phases, along with an increase in the duration of the slow phase, for the coating with the highest levels of biocides. Combining automated culturing and measuring methods, this approach has demonstrated its effectiveness as an ultrasensitive and non-invasive tool for monitoring the physiology of photosynthetic cultures. This is particularly valuable in the context of studying microalgae and their early responses to various environmental conditions, as well as the potential to develop an AF system with minimal harm to the environment.

Spectroscopic Characterization of the Biochemical Profile of Mung Seedlings Following Treatment by Copper Oxide Nanoparticles

The present study aims to assess the physiological and biochemical changes in the mung plants (Vigna radiata L) due to the impact of copper oxide nanoparticles using laser-induced fluorescence, ultraviolet-visible and confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy. The mung seedlings were treated with copper oxide nanoparticles with concentrations of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 mM. The growth parameters of the mung seedlings show considerable decreases at higher concentrations of nanoparticles. The laser-induced fluorescence measurements showed a decrease in photosynthetic activity as indicated by the increase in the intensity ratio (I685/I732) with the nanoparticle concentration. Further, the ultraviolet-visible measurements show a decrease in the plant pigments chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids with the concentration of nanoparticles. Except for 0.2 mM, the Raman spectral signatures obtained from the leaves of mung-treated copper oxide nanoparticles reveal that the cell wall component proteins, lignin, pectin, carbohydrates, aliphatics and carotenoids declined with the treatment of nanoparticles. The decreasing intensity of carotenoids from the Raman measurements and the decreasing chlorophyll and carotenoid content in laser-induced fluorescence and ultraviolet-visible measurements suggest that copper oxide nanoparticles are toxic to mung plants. The spectroscopic techniques along with discriminatory and data processing approaches such as principal component analysis (PCA) are demonstrated to provide noninvasive, nondestructive, sensitive, rapid and effective screening of plants under various stresses.

Effects of a novel bioprocess for the cultivation Synechococcus nidulans on Mars on its biochemical composition: focus on the lipidome

In the present work, the possibility to grow the strain Synechococcus nidulans CCALA 188 on Mars using a medium mimicking a one obtainable using in situ available resources, i.e. the so-called Martian medium, under an atmosphere obtainable by pressurization of Mars CO2, is investigated. The goal is to obtain a biomass with high-value products to sustain a crewed mission to Mars. The results show that the replacement of 40% vol of Z-medium with the same volume of Martian medium does not affect the cultivation and leads to a slight improvement of biomass productivity. Under an atmosphere consisting of pure CO2 the growth rate was reduced but the strain managed to adapt by modifying its metabolism. Total proteins and carbohydrates were significantly reduced under Mars-like conditions, while lipids increased when using CO2. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants is crucial for the wealth of astronauts, and in our case, radical scavenging capacities range from 15 to 20 mmolTEAC/kg were observed. Under CO2, a reduction in antioxidant power is observed likely due to a decrease in photosynthetic activity. The lipidome consisted of sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol, monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, digalactosyldiacylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, and triacylglycerol. A significant increase in the latter ones was observed under Mars simulated atmosphere.

Spatial and remote sensing monitoring shows the end of the bark beetle outbreak on Belgian and north-eastern France Norway spruce (Picea abies) stands.

In 2022, Europe emerged from eight of the hottest years on record, leading to significant spruce mortality across Europe. The particularly dry weather conditions of 2018 triggered an outbreak of bark beetles (Ips typographus), causing the loss of thousands of hectares of Norway spruce stands, including in Wallonia and North-eastern France. A methodology for detecting the health status of spruce was developed based on a dense time series of satellite imagery (Sentinel-2). The time series of satellite images allowed the modelling of the spectral response of healthy spruce forests over the seasons: a decrease in photosynthetic activity of the forest canopy causes deviations from this normal seasonal vegetation index trajectory. These anomalies are caused by a bark beetle attack and are detected automatically. The method leads in the production of an annual spruce health map of Wallonia and Grand-Est. The goal of this paper is to assess the damage caused by bark beetle using the resulting spruce health maps. A second objective was to compare the influence of basic variables on the mortality of spruce trees in these two regions. Lasted 6years (2017-2022), bark beetle has destroyed 12.2% (23,674ha) of the spruce area in Wallonia and Grand-Est of France. This study area is composed of three bioclimatic areas: Plains, Ardennes and Vosges, which have not been equally affected by bark beetle attacks. The plains were the most affected, with 50% of spruce forests destroyed, followed by the Ardennes, which lost 11.3% of its spruce stands. The Vosges was the least affected bioclimatic area, with 5.6% of spruce stands lost. For the most problematic sites, Norway spruce forestry should no longer be considered.

Triazine herbicide reduced the toxicity of the harmful dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi by impairing its photosynthetic systems

Triazine herbicides are common contaminants in coastal waters, and they are recognized as inhibitors of photosystem II, causing significant hinderance to the growth and reproduction of phytoplankton. However, the influence of these herbicides on microalgal toxin production remains unclear. This study aimed to examine this relationship by conducting a comprehensive physiological and 4D label-free quantitative proteomic analysis on the harmful dinoflagellate Karenia mikimotoi in the presence of the triazine herbicide dipropetryn. The findings demonstrated a significant decrease in photosynthetic activity and pigment content, as well as reduced levels of unsaturated fatty acids, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and hemolytic toxins in K. mikimotoi when exposed to dipropetryn. The proteomic analysis revealed a down-regulation in proteins associated with photosynthesis, ROS response, and energy metabolism, such as fatty acid biosynthesis, chlorophyll metabolism, and nitrogen metabolism. In contrast, an up-regulation of proteins related to energy-producing processes, such as fatty acid β-oxidation, glycolysis, and the tricarboxylic acid cycle, was observed. This study demonstrated that dipropetryn disrupts the photosynthetic systems of K. mikimotoi, resulting in a notable decrease in algal toxin production. These findings provide valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms of toxin production in toxigenic microalgae and explore the potential effect of herbicide pollution on harmful algal blooms in coastal environments.

Microplastic pollution associated with reduced respiration in seagrass (Zostera marina L.) and associated epiphytes

Seagrasses provide crucial ecosystem services of relevance for the marine environment. However, anthropogenic activities are causing global seagrass decline. Increasing microplastic (MP) concentrations have been recognized as a novel threat to many marine organisms, but their effects on marine plants remain underexplored. Here, we investigate the effects of microplastic (polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP)) exposure on the photosynthesis and respiration of the seagrass Zostera marina L. and its associated epiphytes. Measurements were conducted on seagrass leaves with and without epiphyte cover, as well as on epiphytes scraped off the leaf surface. Net gas exchange and pH drift measurements were used to determine rates of photosynthesis and respiration, as well as the ability of leaves and epiphytes to utilize bicarbonate. In addition, variable chlorophyll fluorescence imaging was employed to quantify the photosynthetic capacity of seagrass leaves. Our results show a limited effect of short-term (14 days) microplastic exposure on seagrass leaves and their associated epiphytes, although the photosynthetic activity and respiration rates were gradually reduced for bare seagrass leaves with increasing microplastic concentrations (25-1000 mg MP L-1). A >50% reduction in dark respiration of bare leaves was found at the highest MP exposure, while respiration rates of leaves with epiphytes and separated epiphytes were reduced by maximally ~45 and 30% upon MP exposure, respectively. Short-term microplastic exposure did not alter i) the ability to utilize bicarbonate, ii) the maximum quantum yield of PSII (FV/FM), nor iii) the light utilization efficiency of Z. marina leaves and associated epiphytes. The compensation irradiance decreased for all investigated specimens, and seagrass leaves (with and without epiphytes) were able to retain a positive net oxygen balance throughout all treatments. We speculate that the observed decrease in photosynthetic activity and respiration was caused by leachates from microplastics. Our findings thus indicate that seagrass Z. marina largely possess resilience toward microplastic pollution at its current level.

Comparative evaluation of four Chlorella species treating mariculture wastewater under different photoperiods: Nitrogen removal performance, enzyme activity, and antioxidant response

The nitrogen removal performance, nitrogen metabolism enzyme activities, and antioxidant response of four Chlorella species (Chlorella sp., Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella sorokiniana, and Chlorella protothecoides) were compared under different light: dark (L:D) photoperiods during treating mariculture wastewater. The increase of light duration in the range of 8L:16D to 16L:8D was beneficial to the chlorophyll synthesis of selected four Chlorella species. Chlorella vulgaris was the most effective to treat mariculture wastewater than Chlorella sp., Chlorella sorokiniana, and Chlorella protothecoides. and its microalgae density, photosynthetic activity, and nitrogen metabolism enzyme activity were higher than those of the other three Chlorella species. An obvious oxidative stress in microalgal cells was under 20L:4D photoperiod, which led to a decrease in photosynthetic activity and nitrogen metabolizing enzyme activity. Among the four Chlorella species, Chlorella protothecoides had the highest degree of light-induced stress and ROS accumulation. This study can provide suitable microalgae and optimal photoperiod for treating mariculture wastewater.

Heat stress, especially when coupled with high light, accelerates the decline of tropical seagrass (Enhalus acoroides) meadows

Heat stress threatens the survival of seagrass, but its damage mechanisms are unclear. In this study, the results reveal that heat stress exceeding 36 °C in the dark caused inactivation of the PSII reaction center, damaging both the PSII donor and acceptor sides in Enhalus acoroides. High light further increased the damage to the photosynthetic apparatus under heat stress. The stronger the heat stress under high light, the harder the recovery of photosynthetic activity. Therefore, during ebb tide at noon in nature, heat stress combined with strong light would induce a significant, even irreversible decrease in photosynthetic activity. Moreover, the heat stress hindered the transcription of psbA and RuBisCO, enhanced respiratory O2, and induced severe peroxidation even if the SOD, APX, and GPX activities significantly improved. The results clearly suggest that heat stress, especially when coupled with high light, may be an important cause for the decline of E. acoroides meadows.

The Enzyme Lysine Malonylation of Calvin Cycle and Gluconeogenesis Regulated Glycometabolism in Nostoc flagelliforme to Adapt to Drought Stress.

Lysine malonylation (Kmal) is an evolutionarily conserved post-translational modification (PTM) that has been demonstrated to be involved in cellular and organismal metabolism. However, the role that Kmal plays in response to drought stress of the terrestrial cyanobacteria N. flagelliforme is still unknown. In this study, we performed the first proteomic analysis of Kmal in N. flagelliforme under different drought stresses using LC-MS/MS. In total, 421 malonylated lysine residues were found in 236 different proteins. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that these malonylated proteins were highly enriched in several metabolic pathways, including carbon metabolism and photosynthesis. Decreased malonylation levels were found to hinder the reception and transmission of light energy and CO2 fixation, which led to a decrease in photosynthetic activity. Kmal was also shown to inhibit the flux of the TCA cycle and activate the gluconeogenesis pathway in response to drought stress. Furthermore, malonylated antioxidant enzymes and antioxidants were synergistically involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging. Malonylation was involved in lipid degradation and amino acid biosynthesis as part of drought stress adaptation. This work represents the first comprehensive investigation of the role of malonylation in dehydrated N. flagelliforme, providing an important resource for understanding the drought tolerance mechanism of this organism.

Structure and Productivity of the Phytoplankton Community in the Southwestern Kara Sea in Early Summer

Knowledge of the features of the structure and productivity of the Arctic communities of marine planktonic algae is necessary to identify possible changes in the pelagic ecosystem functioning under the changing climate condition of the Kara Sea. This study shows that the species diversity, abundance of phytoplankton, and production activity of algae are at a maximum at the beginning of summer during a seasonal ice melting period. The studies were carried out in the southwestern Kara Sea and in the estuarine zone of the Ob and Yenisei rivers from 29 June to 15 July 2018. The concentrations of nutrients and dissolved organic carbon were determined. The optical properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter, species composition, abundance and biomass of all size groups of phototrophic and heterotrophic phytoplankton, and parameters of primary production and potential photosynthetic capacity were considered. Statistical data analysis showed that the leading factors influencing changes in the abundance of phytoplankton and its productivity are the content of silicates and salinity. At the same time, the production potential of algae is realized as short-lived and small phytoplankton assemblages differed in number taxa and diversity, with an equally rapid decrease in photosynthetic activity. Such changes affect the Marine Zone to a greater extent and the Estuarine Zone to a lesser extent.

The Photophysiology of Benthic Diatoms in the Intertidal Flats of Pulau Pinang (Malaysia)

The in-situ photosynthetic activity in tropical intertidal benthic diatom in response to environmental variation was assessed in this study by measuring chlorophyll fluorescence. The investigation was carried out during the lowest tide in January (non-rainy day) and February 2013 (post-rainy day) at two sampling sites (A and B) from each selected location (Pantai Jerejak, Teluk Bahang and Tanjung Bungah, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia). Samples of surface sediment (top 0.5 cm) were collected, and chlorophyll a extracted as biomass estimation. Assessments of the photosynthetic activity of benthic diatoms were made using a pulse-amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer. Fifty-three species were identified, representing 27 genera from the three studied locations. Both locations showed similarities in species diversity and abundance. Two-way ANOVA showed no significant differences (p = 0.430) in species richness (Margalef Index) among sampling locations, with an average value of 6.33±0.247. Both intertidal flats were dominated by Cocconeis, Navicula, Actinoptychus, and Diploneis. The community has low maximum quantum yields, Fv/Fm (ranging from 0.170 to 0.340) and is often light-limited (Photoacclimation Index, Ek, ranging from 67.96 to 236.71 mol photons m-2 s-1). The relative electron transport rate (rETRmax) was low, with values ranging from 3.45 to 35.51 across three sampling locations. Fluctuation in salinity has caused a decrease in photosynthetic activity. This study suggests that the low values indicated a poorly adapted benthic microalgal community that is constantly light-limited. However, time-series data is needed to determine the ability of these communities to adapt to the changing environment.

The Effect of Short-Term Heating on Photosynthetic Activity, Pigment Content, and Pro-/Antioxidant Balance of A. thaliana Phytochrome Mutants.

The effects of heating (40 °C, 1 and 2 h) in dark and light conditions on the photosynthetic activity (photosynthesis rate and photosystem II activity), content of photosynthetic pigments, activity of antioxidant enzymes, content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), and expression of a number of key genes of antioxidant enzymes and photosynthetic proteins were studied. It was shown that, in darkness, heating reduced CO2 gas exchange, photosystem II activity, and the content of photosynthetic pigments to a greater extent in the phyB mutant than in the wild type (WT). The content of TBARs increased only in the phyB mutant, which is apparently associated with a sharp increase in the total peroxidase activity in WT and its decrease in the phyB mutant, which is consistent with a noticeable decrease in photosynthetic activity and the content of photosynthetic pigments in the mutant. No differences were indicated in all heated samples under light. It is assumed that the resistance of the photosynthetic apparatus to a short-term elevated temperature depends on the content of PHYB active form and is probably determined by the effect of phytochrome on the content of low-molecular weight antioxidants and the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

Effects of Mycotoxin Fumagillin, Mevastatin, Radicicol, and Wortmannin on Photosynthesis of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Mycotoxins are one of the most important sources for the discovery of new pesticides and drugs because of their chemical structural diversity and fascinating bioactivity as well as unique novel targets. Here, the effects of four mycotoxins, fumagillin, mevastatin, radicicol, and wortmannin, on photosynthesis were investigated to identify their precise sites of action on the photosynthetic apparatus of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Our results showed that these four mycotoxins have multiple targets, acting mainly on photosystem II (PSII). Their mode of action is similar to that of diuron, inhibiting electron flow beyond the primary quinone electron acceptor (QA) by binding to the secondary quinone electron acceptor (QB) site of the D1 protein, thereby affecting photosynthesis. The results of PSII oxygen evolution rate and chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence imaging suggested that fumagillin strongly inhibited overall PSII activity; the other three toxins also exhibited a negative influence at the high concentration. Chl a fluorescence kinetics and the JIP test showed that the inhibition of electron transport beyond QA was the most significant feature of the four mycotoxins. Fumagillin decreased the rate of O2 evolution by interrupting electron transfer on the PSII acceptor side, and had multiple negative effects on the primary photochemical reaction and PSII antenna size. Mevastatin caused a decrease in photosynthetic activity, mainly due to the inhibition of electron transport. Both radicicol and wortmannin decreased photosynthetic efficiency, mainly by inhibiting the electron transport efficiency of the PSII acceptor side and the activity of the PSII reaction centers. In addition, radicicol reduced the primary photochemical reaction efficiency and antenna size. The simulated molecular model of the four mycotoxins' binding to C. reinhardtii D1 protein indicated that the residue D1-Phe265 is their common site at the QB site. This is a novel target site different from those of commercial PSII herbicides. Thus, the interesting effects of the four mycotoxins on PSII suggested that they provide new ideas for the design of novel and efficient herbicide molecules.

A bimetallic nanocatalyst from carbonaceous waste for crystal violet degradation

The contamination of wastewater by cationic dyes has caused considerable environmental problems, such as an imbalance in the aquatic ecosystem and a decrease in photosynthetic activity. In this context, this study aims to synthesize and characterize a bimetallic nanocatalyst (MMT@TiO2-NPs/ZnO-NPs), as well as to evaluate its photocatalytic activity in crystal violet (CV) dye degradation. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field Emission Gun – Scanning Electron Microscope (FEG-SEM), N2 physisorption (BET/BJH methods), UV–Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS), zeta potential (ZP), and zero charge point (pHZCP). Central composite rotational design (CCRD 2³) was used for the experimental design to obtain the ideal condition. The diffractograms showed characteristic peaks of MMT (analcime and neighborite), ZnO-NPs (zincite) and TiO2-NPs (anatase) with an average crystallite size determined in the range of 10–50 nm. The MMT@TiO2-NPs/ZnO-NPs showed a high surface area (98.8 ± 0.6 m2 g−1) with IV-type isotherm characteristic of porous materials. Moreover, a heterogeneous morphology with an average particle size of around 16 nm. ZP showed a negative charge (−3.84 ± 0.07 mV) and pHZCP ≈ 5.80, favoring interactions with the CV dye. Ideal condition was [CV] = 32.5 g L−1, [MMT@TiO2-NPs/ZnO-NPs] = 1.75 g L−1 and pH = 12, with a CV removal of 99.97% (k = 0.0789 min−1) under visible radiation. Regarding reuse, MMT@TiO2-NPs/ZnO-NPs showed great photocatalytic stability after six cycles with 90.62% for the CV degradation. Therefore, MMT@TiO2-NPs/ZnO-NPs showed great potential for use in the treatment of industrial textile effluents, helping in the waste management strategy from mid-to long-term perspectives.

Fire affects wood formation dynamics and ecophysiology of Pinus pinaster Aiton growing in a dry Mediterranean area

The increase in frequency and intensity of wildfires is seriously affecting forest ecosystems, especially in drought-prone areas. Trees’ recovery after fire is related to direct tree damage and is influenced by climate conditions, such as warm temperature and water shortage. In this study, we evaluate the post-fire effects on a Pinus pinaster Aiton forest growing in a hot and dry area of the Mediterranean region by comparing burned trees with severe crown reduction against unburned and not-defoliated trees. Inter-annual analyses of dendrochronology and stable isotopes in tree rings were combined with xylogenesis monitoring to investigate the effects of fire on tree growth, ecophysiological processes and wood formation. Tree-ring and isotope data showed a growth reduction and a decrease in photosynthetic activity in the burned trees, compared to control individuals, in the three years after fire. Further, the monitoring of cambial activity demonstrated a negative influence of warm and dry periods on wood formation, low xylem production, a delay in phenology and a reduction in xylem plasticity in burned trees. Our findings suggest that substantial photosynthetic limitations caused by crown defoliation and recurrent drought events could lead to severe growth decrease and reduction of trees ability to regain the pre-disturbance productivity rates.

DROUGHT EFFECTS ON PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF DURUM AND BREAD WHEAT

The present research discusses the dynamics of changes in the surface of assimilation organs of different durum and bread wheat genotypes differing in the maturation period due to drought conditions. Under drought conditions, the soil water potential decreases, and in the later stages of the plants, the turgor pressure decreases, the stomata close, and a sharp decrease in photosynthetic activities. The situation creates stress in the crop plant, and various biochemical, physiological, and molecular reactions arise to overcome and protect itself from stress, allowing the plant to develop resistant mechanisms to adapt to the external environment. The existent research aimed to determine drought effects on assimilating surface areas and productivity traits of durum and bread wheat genotypes differing in their maturation periods grown under various climatic and soil conditions, with the comparison of the physiological indices. The experiments proceeded on wheat genotypes with contrasting maturation periods (early, medium, and late) during 2021–2022 at the Research Institute of Crop Husbandry, Absheron, Azerbaijan. The assimilating surface area of various organs underwent comparative studies in two durum (Garagylchyg-2 and Alinja-84) and two bread wheat (Nurlu-99 and Gobustan) cultivars under normal water supply and drought conditions. Post anthesis water stress caused a 34% and 27% reduction in grain yield and 1000-grain weight, respectively, while no significant effect on the grains per spike and spikes per m2. The averages of grain yield and 1000-grain weight of different wheat cultivars in the controlled condition showed 696±36 g/m2 and 43.1±0.8 g/m2, respectively, while under water-stress conditions, these values significantly decreased to 452±57 g/m2 and 31.6±1.4 g. The significant reduction in grain yield due to post-anthesis water stress might be due to a reduction in photo-assimilates production.

Plastic is in the air: Impact of micro-nanoplastics from airborne pollution on Tillandsia usneoides (L.) L. (Bromeliaceae) as a possible green sensor

Due to the increasing evidence of widespread plastic pollution in the air, the impact on plants of airborne particles of polycarbonate (PC), polyethyleneterephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), and polyvinylchloride (PVC) was tested by administering pristine and aged airborne micro-nanoplastics (MNPs) to Tillandsia usneoides for two weeks. Here we showed that exposure to pristine MNPs, significantly reduced plant growth with respect to controls. Particularly, PVC almost halved plant development at the end of the treatment, while the other plastics exerted negative effects on growth only at the beginning of the exposure, with final stages comparable to those of controls. Plants exposed to aged MNPs showed significantly decreased growth at early stages with PC, later in the growth with PE, and even later with PET. Aged PVC did not exert a toxic effect on plants. When present, the plastic-mediated reduction in plant growth was coupled with a decrease in photosynthetic activity and alterations in the plant concentration of macro- and micronutrients. The plastic particles were showed to adhere to the plant surface and, preferentially, on the trichome wings. Our results reported, for the first time, evidence of negative effects of airborne plastic pollution on plant health, thus raising concerns for related environmental risks.

Cold stress tolerance of the intertidal red alga Neoporphyra haitanensis

BackgroundRed algae Porphyra sensu lato grow naturally in the unfavorable intertidal environment, in which they are exposed to substantial temperature fluctuations. The strategies of Porphyra to tolerate cold stress are poorly understood.ResultsHerein, investigations revealed that chilling and freezing induced alterations in the physiological properties, gene transcriptional profiles and metabolite levels in the economically important red algae species, Neoporphyra haitanensis. Control samples (kept at 20 °C) were compared to chilled thalli (10 and 4 °C) and to thalli under − 4 °C conditions. Chilling stress did not affect the health or photosynthetic efficiency of gametophytes, but freezing conditions resulted in the arrest of growth, death of some cells and a decrease in photosynthetic activity as calculated by Fv/Fm. Transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed that the photosynthetic system was down-regulated along with genes associated with carbon fixation and primary metabolic biosynthesis. Adaptive mechanisms included an increase in unsaturated fatty acids levels to improve membrane fluidity, an increase in floridoside and isofloridoside content to enhance osmotic resistance, and an elevation in levels of some resistance-associated phytohormones (abscisic acid, salicylic acid, and methyl jasmonic acid). These physiochemical alterations occurred together with the upregulation of ribosome biogenesis.ConclusionsN. haitanensis adopts multiple protective mechanisms to maintain homeostasis of cellular physiology in tolerance to cold stress.

Photodegradation of organic compounds from Titanates: a review

Contamination of wastewater for dyes; such as Rhodamine B (RhB), Methylene Blue (MB), and Methyl Orange (MO), has caused environmental problems, such as an imbalance in the aquatic ecosystem and a decrease in photosynthetic activity. Thus, for the treatment of waste in water, advanced oxidative process (AOPs) is used, such as the heterogeneous photocatalysis, in which they have been used in the photodegradation of organic pollutants, enabling the use of alternative materials (nanocatalysts). Titanates (TiO2X) have optical-electronic properties, such as the absorption of a wide range of light and semiconductor behavior, presenting catalytic activity. The analysis of this review in the ScienceDirect and Scopus databases (2017 - Nov 2022) allowed us to demonstrate the different types of titanates with Al+2, Bi+4, Na+2, and W+4 ions for photodegradation of dyes resulting in high percentages of degradation (>80%) mainly due to the formation of free radicals ((•OH) and (•O)) causing oxidation processes in organic compounds. Moreover, properties directly affected the degradation results, such as surface area (allowing an increase in interactions with organic compounds) and band gap energy (allowing the application under visible light). The tendency is that different types of titanates (with metallic ions) are more researched and investigated mainly for photocatalytic applications, allowing the understanding of the synergism mechanism between Ti and metallic ions, to meet sustainable development and the generation of clean energy.
