“Quem leva a pior?” Nordestinos e bolivianos no mercado de trabalho paulista

O artigo compara os diferenciais de rendimento do trabalho de bolivianos e nordestinos no Estado de São Paulo, com base nos dados do Censo Demográfico de 2010. A estratégia de comparar migrantes internos com os internacionais é uma forma de tentar entender como operam os mecanismos de seletividade, adaptação e discriminação por origem. Foram utilizados modelos estatísticos para controlar as análises e saber se bolivianos e nordestinos com características as mais próximas possíveis em termos de variáveis censitárias apresentariam um diferencial de salário, deixando apenas o local de nascimento como variável discriminante. Verificamos, a partir da decomposição dos diferenciais de salário, que os atributos produtivos desses imigrantes são valorizados de maneira diferente. As análises demonstram que os bolivianos “levam a melhor” quando comparados com nordestinos, que se encontram em uma situação pior dada a menor valorização de seus atributos individuais

Formal and informal sectors: is there any wage differential?

ABSTRACTThe main objective of this paper is to investigate if a wage difference exists between formal and informal sectors in the case of the Turkish labour market using a sample of wageworkers. To this end, we use data for 2004 and 2009 and a novel definition of the informal sector. On the methodological front, we adopt three alternative decomposition techniques, namely, the Oaxaca-Ransom [(1994). On discrimination and the decomposition of wage differentials. Generalized Selection Bias and the Decomposition of Wage Differentials

The major contribution of this paper is ending a new and flexible way to measure the effects of selection on log-wages. In this context, we offer a general approach to performing decomposition analysis when selection effects are present. We call the difference between unconditional and conditional expectations of the log-wages a generalized selection bias (GSB) when the two expectations are measured using the estimates from the joint estimation of the whole model (log-wages and selection equations) by the MLE method. The unconditional and conditional expectations are, respectively, the deterministic component of log-wages, and the deterministic component plus the conditional expectation of the stochastic component of log-wages, where the deterministic component is computed using the estimates from the joint estimation. That is, the GSB is the expectation of the residuals estimated from the joint estimation. It is appropriate to apply the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition method to the wage differentials adjusted for the GSB. The GSB approach to decomposition analysis is not only easy to implement and flexible enough to apply to virtually any kind of selection issue, but also efficient because it uses full information. We illustrate the GSB approach by applying it to the racial wage differentials among women using data from the Current Population Survey. We discuss the possibility of using semi-parametric or Bayesian sampling method for the joint estimation and related modifications of decomposition analysis.

Language usage and earnings among minorities: The case of the Arabs in Israel

The paper studies the effect of the usage of the majority language by minority members on their earnings. Unlike recent studies on language proficiency, the paper deals with minorities that were not created through migration. It thereby contributes new insight into the “language component” in the decomposition of wage differentials by separating language usage from other human capital resources. The empirical study deals with three sub-groups of the Arab minority in Israel.

On discrimination and the decomposition of wage differentials

In this paper we examine four alternative methods for estimating the extent of labor market discrimination. All of the methods involve the decomposition of gross (unadjusted) wage differentials into discrimination and productivity components. These methods can be expressed in a single generalized form and are shown to differ with respect to the implicity assumed nondiscriminatory, competitive wage structure. Equivalencies among the methods are shown to exist under certain restrictive conditions. These methods are applied to micro data from the U.S. Current Population Survey and from a specific U.S. firm.

North American Indians in the Canadian labour market: A decomposition of wage differentials

In this paper we empirically determine the components of the gross wage differential that can be explained by productivity-enhancing attributes and that which is due to unexplained factors and labour market discrimination. Individual data from the 1986 Labour Market Activity Survey is used to decompose the gross earnings differential. It is found that much of the wage gap is unexplained by human capital and other observable differences.

On the Decomposition of Wage Differentials

The often-used method for decomposing wage differentials into human capital and discrimination components is reformulated so that both t he disadvantage, or cost, discrimination it imposes on a black or minority wage earner and the advantage, or benefit, it bestows on a white or majority wage earner can be estimated.
