Effect of Different Fencing Regimes on Community Structure of Perennial Plant Species in Cholistan Desert, Pakistan

The present study was conducted to analyze the effect of different fencing regimes on a community structure of perennial plant species in Cholistan desert. Major sites include Derawar Fort (Biodiversity Park IUB), Mauj Garh Fort (Livestock Farm) And Lal Suhanra National Park (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan Conservation and Breeding Center). In each site, thirty-three quadrats measuring 10 x 10 m2 are laid out at random i-e., eleven quadrats at each sub sites (sand dune, inter dune and clayey land). During the study the parameter which we covered are density, relative density, relative frequency, cover, relative cover, importance value index and diversity index. After the completion of the study 31 families and 57 species are reported in all three sites. Ochthochloa compressa, Suaeda fruticose and Lasiurus scindicus showed very high values of relative density, relative frequency, relative cover and importance value. Cenchrus ciliaris, Cymbopogon jwarancusa followed by Haloxylon salicarnicum have moderate while Ziziphus nummularia, Salvadora oleiodes, Aristida hystricula, Calotropis procera and Heliotropium crispum have very low values of phytosociology parameters. The average of Diversity index of all species are found at all three sites was (0.8009822). Overall selected three sites play an important role in the conservation of many native species of desert that are otherwise facing multiple biotic abiotic and anthropogenic factors.

Some Highly Potent Nepalese Medicinal Plants with Antimicrobial Properties.

In recent years, microbial infections have emerged as a serious global health problem, necessitating the search for novel and effective treatments. Medicinal plants contain phytochemicals that can be used to prevent and treat various infections. Traditional medicinal practices have long relied on the healing properties of herbs, and Nepal is particularly rich in this knowledge. Bioactive compounds found in plants possess antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, making them a valuable resource for the fight against microbial infections. This review focuses on three medicinal plants native to Nepal, Amomum subulatum, Cymbopogon jwarancusa, and Cinnamomum glaucescens, which contain potent antimicrobial phytochemicals. The traditional uses, bioactive components, and biological activities of these plants are discussed, providing valuable insights into their potential as natural remedies to combat microbial infections.

Multivariate analysis of the summer herbaceous vegetation and environmental factors of the sub-tropical region

Understanding the distribution of the plant species of an unexplored area is the utmost need of the present-day. In order to collect vegetation data, Quadrat method was used having size of 1 m2. The composite soil samples from each site were tested for various edaphic properties. PC-ORD v.5 was used for the classification of the vegetation while CANOCO v.5.1 was used for ordination of the data and to find out the complex relationship between plants and environment. Survey was conducted during summer season and a total of 216 herbaceous species were recorded from forty different sites of District Kohat, Pakistan. Cluster Analysis (CA) and Two-Way Cluster Analysis (TWCA) classified the vegetation of forty sites into six major plant groups i.e., 1. Paspalum paspalodes, Alternanthera sessilis, Typha domingensis, 2. Cynodon dactylon, Parthenium hysterophorus, Brachiaria ramosa, 3. Cynodon dactylon, Eragrostis minor, Cymbopogon jwarancusa, 4. Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Aristida adscensionis, Boerhavia procumbens, 5. Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Aristida adscensionis, Pennisetum orientale and 6. Heteropogon contortus, Bothriochloa ischaemum, Chrysopogon serrulatus. They were named after the dominant species based on their Importance Value (IV). The detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) analysis further confirmed the vegetation classification. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that the species distribution in the area was strongly affected by various environmental factors including status, soil characteristics, topography and altitude.

Pharmacognostical and Phytochemical Evaluation of a Unani Polyherbal Formulation: Dawa ul Kurkum by HPTLC

Background: Dawa ul Kurkum (Duk) is a widely used Unani formulation. It consists of seven plant herbs, including stigmas of Crocus sativus L., rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi (D.Don) DC., the bark of Cinnamomum cassia (L.) J. Presl., shoot of Cymbopogon jwarancusa (Jones ex Roxb.) Schult., the resin of Commiphora wightii (Arn.) Bhandari, roots of Saussurea lappa (Decne.) Sch.Bip., and bark of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume. However, no study has been previously conducted to characterize this formulation. Thus, the present study was designed to carry out the pharmacognostic and phytochemical characterization of Duk. Methods: Duk was prepared following the protocols in Bayaz e Kabeer and The National Formulary of Unani Medicine Part-I. The characterization included organoleptic properties, fluorescence analysis, preliminary phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity, and active constituent profiling using HPTLC. Results: Evaluation of Duk showed the presence of carbohydrates, flavonoids, quinones, glycosides, cardiac glycosides, terpenoids, phenols, coumarin, steroids, and phytosterols. The total phenolic and flavonoid content was 5.75 ± 0.23 mg GAE/g and 10 ± 0.18 mg QUE/g, respectively. HPTLC of Duk showed the presence of p-coumaric acid, cinnamaldehyde, citral, crocin, isovaleric acid, guggulsterone, and dehydrocostus lactone. Conclusions: Our findings supported the use of Duk as a conventional medicine, and these results could be used as a reference for the standardization of Duk.

Impact of Mycorrhizal Fungi from Different Rhizospheric Soils on Fungal Colonization, Growth, and Chlorophyll Contents of Cenchrus ciliaris

Mycorrhizae are symbiotic associations between fungi and plants and are primarily responsible for nutrient transfer and survival of both partners. The present study was conducted to explore the diversity of mycorrhizal fungi in the rhizospheric soil of perennial grass species (Saccharum spontaneum, Saccharum bengalense, Setaria verticillata, Cymbopogon jwarancusa, and Typha angustata) around the district Layyah. In the subsequent experiment, the rhizospheric soils were used as inoculants, and their impact on mycorrhizal colonization in the plant and soil, and growth and physiological attributes, of Cenchrus ciliaris were investigated. The maximum hyphal, vesicles, arbuscules, dark septate endophytic and ectomycorrhizal colonization, and spore percentage were observed in the case of R-S5, i.e., rhizospheric soil, collected from Saccharum bengalense. However, the maximum (0.9310) Simpson’s index of diversity was observed in the case of R-S4, i.e., rhizospheric soil collected from Setaria verticillata. Different mycorrhizal fungal morphotypes scattered over three genera, i.e., Acaulospora, Glomus, and Scutellospora, were recorded both from rhizosphere and trap cultures. The application of spores from rhizospheric soil collected from S. bengalense (R-S5) caused the maximum increase in plant height (19.5%), number of leaves plant−1 (17.6%), leaf area (108.0%), and chlorophyll contents (29.4%) of Cenchrus ciliaris, compared to other treatments. In conclusion, the inoculation of mycorrhizal fungi significantly improves the mycorrhizal characteristics of Cenchrus ciliaris and its rhizospheric soil and ultimately enhances the growth and physiological parameters of Cenchrus ciliaris.

Palyno-Morphological Characteristics as a Systematic Approach in the Identification of Halophytic Poaceae Species from a Saline Environment.

Pollen morphology of 12 salt-tolerant grasses (Calamagrostis pseudophragmites, Cenchrus biflorus, Cenchrus ciliaris, Cenchrus pennisetiformis, Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Echinochloa colona, Echinochloa crus-galli, Saccharum griffithii, Saccharum ravennae, Saccharum spontaneum, and Urochloa ramosa) from the Salt Range was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). The main aim was the elucidation of taxonomic significance of pollen morphology, which might be useful for taxonomists in the identification of halophytic Poaceae taxa. The described pollen morphology is a good source of taxonomic characteristics that can help in species and genera differentiation. The investigated variations in the pollen micromorphological features and exploration of new palynological traits support and strengthen the systematics of Poaceae. The pollen shape of all studied species was sub-spheroidal, and exine ornamentation includes microechinate-areolate (11 spp.) and microechinate (1 spp.). Two types of pollen apertures were reported, i.e., monoporate (11 spp.) and diporate (Cenchrus pennisetiformis). The annulus was found in all species while operculum was observed only in three species. The univariate and multivariate analyses were used to analyze the quantitative data. The highest pollen viability values (%) depicted the adaptability of Poaceae taxa in the salt region. Overall, the pollen characteristics in polar and equatorial view, apertures, annulus, operculum, and surface ornamentation of pollen grains of the family Poaceae are of great taxonomic significance for the species identification.

Plant-Derived Smoke Solution Alleviates Cellular Oxidative Stress Caused by Arsenic and Mercury by Modulating the Cellular Antioxidative Defense System in Wheat.

Heavy metal stress is a significant factor in diminishing crop yield. Plant-derived smoke (PDS) has been used as a growth promoter and abiotic stress alleviator for the last two decades. Although the roles of PDS have been determined in various plants, its role in ameliorating heavy metal stress in wheat has not been reported so far. Therefore, the present work was conducted to investigate the effect of smoke solution extracted from a wild lemongrass Cymbopogon jwarancusa (C. jwarncusa) on physiological and biochemical features of wheat under arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) stress. The results showed that higher concentrations of As and Hg pose inhibitory effects on wheat seed germination and seedling growth, including shoot/root length and shoot/root fresh weight. Photosynthetic pigments, such as chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids, were significantly decreased under As and Hg stress. Importantly, the levels of H2O2, lipid peroxidation, and TBARS were increased in wheat seedlings. The activity of antioxidant enzymes, such as CAT, was decreased by As and Hg stress, while the levels of SOD, POD, and APX antioxidant enzymes were increased in root and shoot. Interestingly, the application of PDS (2000 ppm), individually or in combination with either As or Hg stress, enhanced wheat seed germination rate, shoot/root length, and shoot/root fresh weight. However, the levels of H2O2, lipid peroxidation, and TBARS were decreased. Similarly, the levels of SOD, POD, and APX were decreased by PDS under As and Hg stress, while the level of CAT was enhanced by PDS under As and Hg stress. Interestingly, the levels of chlorophyll a and b, and total carotenoids were increased with the application of PDS under As and Hg stress. It is concluded that PDS has the capability to alleviate the phytotoxic effects of As and Hg stress in wheat by modulating the antioxidative defense system and could be an economical solution to reduce the heavy metal stress in crops.

A new endophytic fungus CJAN1179 isolated from the Cholistan desert promotes lateral root growth in Arabidopsis and produces IAA through tryptophan-dependent pathway

Fungi, important for growth of plants in arid lands, are expected to be involved in novel biochemical activities during fungal–plant interactions. We isolated 150 fungi associated with rhizosphere and root endosphere of two perennial grasses, Cymbopogon jwarancusa and Panicum antidotale, from Cholistan desert. The isolates were screened for their impact on plant growth and development using Arabidopsis thaliana (Col-0) as a model system. A root-endophytic fungus CJAN1179 from C. jwarancusa showed the highest plant growth-promoting effects. The most remarkable was enhanced number of lateral roots (3.1-fold). CJAN1179 produced indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) particularly in the presence of tryptophan. ITS sequence and phylogenetic analysis characterisation suggested the fungus to be a new species within Sordariomycetidae. CJAN1179 appears to promote plant growth by secreting IAA using tryptophan as a precursor. This fungus can be further explored for its suitability to promote growth of commercially important crops, particularly in arid regions.

Chemical characterization, antimicrobial and antioxidant evaluation of Cymbopogon jwarancusa (Jones) Schult. essential oil

ABSTRACT The present study describes the results of phytochemical, antimicrobial and antioxidant study on the essential oil of Cymbopogon jwarancusa from India. The major constituents identified were cis-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (25.3–31.8%), trans-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (14.0–16.6%), δ-2-carene (11.8–15.8%), cis-p-menth-1-en-3-ol (10.5–14.2%) and trans-p-menth-1-en-3-ol (8.0–9.2%). Significant quantitative variations in composition were noticed during annual growth in different harvesting seasons. The essential oil exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermis and Streptococcus mutans. However, in the antifungal assay, Candida kefyr, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Candida krusei were found to be more susceptible to essential oil of C. jwarancusa. The essential oil exhibited dose dependent antioxidant activity in DPPH and nitric oxide scavenging assay.

Microscopic implication and evaluation of herbaceous melliferous plants of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Pakistan using light and scanning electron microscope.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the pollen morphology of melliferous plant taxa of Southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Pakistan. Using light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), the palynological study of 18 species of melliferous plants namely Calendula arvensis, Cenchrus pennisetiformis, Citrullus colocynthis, Cucumis melo subsp. agrestis var. agrestis, Cucurbita maxima, Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Cynodon dectylon, Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Helianthus annus, Lagenaria siceraria, Launaea procumbens, Luffa cylindrica, Pennisetum glaucum, Saccharum spontaneum, Sonchus asper, Verbesina encelioides, Xanthium strumarium, and Zea mays was carried out. Both qualitative and quantitative characteristics of pollen were studied. Variations were observed in pollen morphology. The dominant pollen shape was prolate-spheroidal (11 species). All the pollen units were monad. The highest exine thickness was found in Citrullus colocynthis (8.45 μm). The maximum polar and equatorial diameter (102 and 97.55 μm) was found in Luffa cylindrica. Similarly, the highest P/E ratio was found in Cucurbita maxima (1.46). Most of the species showed tricolpate and monoporate type of pollen. The exine sculpturing, number of spines per pollen and between colpi and the pollen fertility and sterility provided significant results for the documentation of melliferous plants. Thus, the information listed in this article will prove helpful to identify the potential melliferous plants in the area, geographical origin of the honey, and the availability of pure honey in the local and international market.

Survival Strategies in Khavi Grass [Cymbopogon jwarancusa (Jones) Schult.] Colonizing Hot Hypersaline and Arid Environments

Deserts are generally prone to a number of ecological hazards which act as agents for the development of particularly a very diverse group of grasses, which can resist to salt stress through multiple morpho-anatomical and physio-biochemical mechanisms. Of such grasses, Cymbopogon jwarancusa is found inhabiting different saline patches of the Cholistan desert, so its different populations were selected from five saline habitats [least saline Derawar Fort (DF); moderately saline Trawaywala Toba (TW) and Bailahwala Dahar (BD), and high saline Ladam Sir (LS) and Pati Sir (PS)] and tested for their salt tolerance mechanism. Differentially adapted populations of this grass showed specific modifications in terms of anatomical features, mainly increased sclerification in both external hypodermis and internal endodermis, cortical layers, and increased size of xylem vessels with increase in salinity of the habitat. Increased endodermal thickness may control radial movement of water in roots. The reduction in leaf area is found to be the principal strategy that makes C. jwarancusa promising to attenuate the effects of the reduced availability of water under saline stress. Thick epidermis with dense cuticle and large bulliform cells area can be particularly considered as an important adaptation of this grass against physiological drought. Moreover, increased density of trichomes is found critical for checking undue water loss through the leaf surface and increase in these tissues at high salinity level may indicate that this species has better adapted to saline habitat.

Biogenic iron oxide nanoparticles enhance callogenesis and regeneration pattern of recalcitrant Cicer arietinum L.

This study is the first report on the biosynthesized iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) which mediate in-vitro callus induction and shoot regeneration in economically important recalcitrant chickpea crop (Cicer arietinum L.). Here, we used leaf extract of Cymbopogon jwarancusa for the synthesis of IONPs in order to achieve a better biocompatibility. The bioactive compounds in C. jwarancusa leaf extract served as both reducing and capping agents in the fabrication process of IONPs. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) revealed rods like surface morphology of IONPs with an average diameter of 50±0.2 nm. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) depicted formation of pure IONPs with 69.84% Fe and 30.16% O2. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) validate the crystalline structure, chemical analysis detect the presence of various biomolecular fingerprints in the as synthesized IONPs. UV-visible absorption spectroscopy depicts activity of IONPs under visible light. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) displayed thermal loss of organic capping around 500°C and confirmed their stabilization. The biosynthesized IONPs revealed promising results in callus induction, shoot regeneration and root induction of chickpea plants. Both chickpea varieties Punjab-Noor 09 and Bittle-98 explants, Embryo axes (EA) and Embryo axes plus adjacent part of cotyledon (EXC) demonstrated dose-dependent response. Among all explants, EXC of Punjab-Noor variety showed the highest callogenesis (96%) and shoot regeneration frequency (88%), while root induction frequency was also increased to 83%. Iron content was quantified in regenerated chickpea varieties through inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The quantity of iron is significantly increased in Punjab-Noor regenerated plants (4.88 mg/g) as compare to control treated plants (2.42 mg/g). We found that IONPs enhance chickpea growth pattern and keep regenerated plantlets infection free by providing an optimum environment for rapid growth and development. Thus, IONPs synthesized through green process can be utilized in tissue culture studies in other important recalcitrant legumes crops.

SALINITY TOLERANCE AND PHYTOREMEDIATION OF Na+ AND K+ IONS BY USING HALOPHYTES FROM CHOLISTAN RANGELAND, PAKISTAN

Salinity has been considered as the most important factor which adversely affects the plant growth and metabolism in arid and semi-arid areas. Salinity is increasing with times and is expected that 50% of arable land would be salinized till 2050. Present study investigated salinity tolerance and phytoremediation of Na+ and K+ by using halophytes; Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Aeluropus lagopoides, Panicum antidotale and Cenchrus setigerus. Plants were grown for 40 days in hydroponic solution for biomass productions, chlorophyll contents, membrane stability index (MSI) and phytoremediation. Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and replications was used to check significance level at 5%. Fresh and dry biomass of each species was increased with increasing salinity level but decreased under highly saline conditions. P. antidotale contained highest fresh/dry weight (20.4 A) and (4.2A) at 140 mM NaCl treatment that decreased at 210 mM NaCl. A. lagopoides showed highest MSI at T3 (46.3 A) significance level that reduced at 210 mM NaCl (20.7 D). K+ concentrations in leaves/roots of all species reduced with elevated salinity (9327.4 A) was the highest K+ in leaves of A. lagopoides which reduced to (3976.2 D) at 210 mM NaCl. Na+ concentrations in the selected halophytes increased with the growing salt levels. Na+ concentration in leaves were (2331.8 D) and (3834.7 ppm) at 0 mM NaCl level while it was (9078 A) and (7494.3A) in P. antidotale and A. lagopoides at 210 mM NaCl respectively. Phytoremediation by halophytic grasses is time saving, economically viable and novel approach towards reclaiming saline soils.

In situ dry matter, protein and neutral detergent fibre degradation kinetics of Cholistan Desert grasses

Global climate change is evident and poses serious threats to the sustainability of traditional rangeland livestock production systems. This study tested the feeding potential of perennial grasses of Cholistan Desert for various species of ruminants at different physiological stages. Eight common and nutritionally important grass species (Cenchrus ciliaris, Stipagrostis plumose, Panicum antidotale, Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Cenchrus pennisitiformis, Lasiurus scindicus, Ochthochloa compressa and Vetiveria zizanioides) were investigated for in situ degradation parameters according to Nordic feed evaluation system (NorFor) standards. The collected, dried and milled grass samples were incubated for 0, 4, 8, 16, 24, and 48 hours to determine dry matter and crude protein biodegradation and additionally for 96 and 168 hours for neutral detergent fibre degradation in the rumens of lactating Nili-Ravi buffalo and Cholistan Desert cows and heifers (two from each species and from each physiological stage). All of these grass species influenced the dry matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fibre degradation fractions significantly. The overall effective degradability of dry matter for asymptotic extent of degradation did not differ. However, the potentially degradable but insoluble fraction and rate of degradation were influenced significantly by the species of the animals. All the proximate parametric characteristics of perennial desert grasses were within the nutrient range for typical ruminant diets except for crude protein. It was concluded that rumen availability of grasses was highly influenced by grass species. However, these grasses are equally nutritionally important for various species of ruminants for example buffalo versus cattle at different physiological stages and heifers versus lactating animals.Keywords: buffalo, Cenchrus ciliaris, desert cows, desert forage, feeding value

The fodder grass resources for ruminants: A indigenous treasure of local communities of Thal desert Punjab, Pakistan

Indigenous people have been using local grasses for rearing their animals for centuries. The present study is the first record of traditional knowledge of grasses and livestock feeding system from the Thal desert in Pakistan. A snowball sampling method was used to identify key participants. Information was collected from the respondents from six districts of Thal Desert through semi-structural questionnaire and site visits. The data was analyzed through Smith’s salience index and Composite Salience using ANTHROPAC package in R software. On the whole 61 grasses were recorded from the study area: most of them belong to the Poaceae family (52 species). Based on palatability grasses were categorized into three major groups i.e. (A) High priority, (B) Medium priority and (C) Low priority. Species in Group A, abundantly present in the study area represent a source of highly palatable forage for all ruminants. 232 (141M +91W) local participants were interviewed. Participants were grouped into three major age categories: 20–35 (48 participants), 36–50 (116 participants) and 51–67 years old (68 participants). ANTHROPAC frequency analysis confirmed the Smith’s salience index and Composite Salience; Cynodon dactylon was the favorite species (6.46 SI, 0.6460 CS) followed by Cymbopogon jwarancusa (5.133 SI, 0.5133 CS) and Sorghum sp. was the third most salient species (5.121 SI, 0.5121 CS). Grasses were mostly available during the months of August and October and had also ethnoveterinary importance. This document about the traditional feeding of livestock in Thal Desert can underline the importance of conserving a traditional knowledge, which was poorly documented before.

Comparative Study of Bioactivities and Chemical Constituents of Cymbopogon jwarancusa subsp. olivieri (Boiss.) Soenarko Harvested in Spring and Winter

Essential oils and solvent extracts of Cymbopogon jwarancusa subsp. olivieri (Boiss.) Soenarko plants harvested during two different seasons were investigated in terms of chemical composition and biological activities. Piperitone was the major constituent of essential oil extracted from plants harvested in spring and winter (49.1 and 54.1 %, respectively). The highest total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured in ethanol extract obtained from spring plants (31.72±0.08 mg gallic acid equivalents/g and 40.93±1.12 mg quercetin equivalents/g, respectively), and in acetone extract from plants collected in winter (31.24±0.17 mg GAE/g and 38.32±0.74 mg QE/g, respectively). Amongst the various extracts and essential oils, the highest DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging capacity was recorded in ethanol extract (IC50 = 40.51±3.89 ppm) from plants collected in spring, in comparison with butylated hydroxytoluene (IC50 = 5.85±1.84 ppm) and ascorbic acid (IC50 = 1.28±0.06 ppm) as controls. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of all samples were tested by disc-diffusion, MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration), MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) and MFC (minimum fungicidal concentration) tests. Diethyl ether extract from winter plants exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae (inhibition zone diameter, IZD = 19.28±1.51 mm), compared with gentamicin and penicillin (IZD = 19.87±0.37 and IZD = 13.61±1.84, respectively). Overall, the results showed that the essential oil of C. jwarancusa subsp. olivieri could be considered as a source of piperitone, whereas the diethyl ether extract of the plant could be developed as a promising antibacterial agent in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Diuretic Effect of <em>Cymbopogon jwarancusa</em> after Single and Multiple Doses in Rats

Diuretics are efficaciously used in management of various clinical emergencies like hypertension, heart failure, cirrhosis, hypercalciuria, hematuria and nephrotic syndrome. Cymbopogon jwarancusa is an aromatic perennial grass used in both traditional and Unani system of medicine to eradicate diseases like colds, seasonal fever, asthma, tuberculosis, rheumatic pain, back pain, toothache and nervous disorders. C. jwarancusa essential oils are used in perfumery, soap, detergents, medicines and pharmaceutical industry. Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes constitute the highest composition in essential oil of C. jwarancusa. The present was designed to compare the diuretic activity of C. jwarancusa after single and multi-doses. Furosemide (20 mg/kg) was used as reference drug and 10% DMSO was used as vehicle. Diuretic activity was noticed by measuring urine volume and calculating diuretic and Lipchitz values. Maximum diuretic response was observed at 500 mg/kg of extract after both single and multi-dose administration. On basis of results it may be concluded that C. jwarancusa may be used as diuretic agent.
