The exact matching of the artificial eye prosthesis with contralateral eye is the main aim of any maxillofacial prosthodontist to achieve adequate esthetics. Ocular prosthesis can be given as stock eye shell or by modifying a stock eye by making an impression of the ocular defect. Another method is a fabrication of custom-made eye prosthesis by sclera painting or using digital photograph. Advantages of custom-made eye prosthesis are well established over stock eye shell so, this article presents a case report of patient-wearing stock eye shell with poor esthetics, and the same was replaced with custom-made eye prosthesis fabricated using an image taken with the digital statutory liquidity ratio camera to gain the superior ocular esthetics.

Alternative Technique of Iris Orientation in a Custom-Made Ocular Prosthesis.

Accurate positioning of the iris is critical for the success of an ocular prosthesis. Precise duplication of size and location of the iris is essential for the establishment of realism, symmetry, and a natural-appearing gaze. This article explores an alternative procedure for positioning the iris in a custom-made ocular prosthesis using a pupillary distance ruler (PD ruler). The orientation and mediolateral dimension of the iris of the natural eye was measured from the graduated scale on a PD ruler and transferred on to the sculpted scleral wax pattern. The iris button was positioned in the marked area, and the established orientation was evaluated for symmetry and a natural-appearing gaze. Accurate, predictable, and easy positioning of the iris with the transfer of these dimensions to the definitive prosthesis provided a good result in terms of patient esthetics and satisfaction.

Simulating Natural Eye by Customized Eye Prosthesis Using Digital Photograph

Eye is a vital organ; important for vision and also, an important component of facial expression. The unfortunate loss or absence of an eye, apart from leading to impaired vision, has a crippling effect on overall appearance of the face and psychology of the patient. Replacement of the lost eye, in such cases, becomes important to promote the physical and psychological healing of the patient apart from improving social acceptance. Prosthodontic rehabilitation of missing eye includes fabrication of prosthesis by acrylic resin, silicone and implants. However, a custom-made ocular prosthesis serves as an affordable and satisfactory alternative to the Implants. In this case, we fabricated a custom-made ocular prosthesis, made up of heat cure acrylic sclera. A patient’s iris photograph of adjacent eye was pasted on sclera. It was then covered with self-cure, clear acrylic resin for translucency and best shine giving the live eye effect. Heat cure acrylic resin is the best material for making sclera blanks. Patent’s iris photograph gives the effect of natural looking iris. The self-cure clear acrylic offers translucency and 3-D effect with best shine. The technique is very simple, easily adaptable and gives the prosthesis with superior esthetics than stock eyes. This case report describes a novel technique for fabricating a predictable, esthetic, well-fitting and comfortable, custom-made, ocular prosthesis in an attempt to avoid costly and time consuming procedures.

Characterization of an eye prosthesis using monopoly syrup

Maxillofacial prostheses restore and replace stomatognathic and associated facial structures with artificial substitutes. The objectives of eye prosthesis is to improve the patient esthetics, restore and maintain the health of the remaining associated structures, consequently provide physical and mental well-being. The primary purpose of an ocular prosthesis is to maintain the volume of eye socket and create the illusion of a healthy eye and surrounding tissue. A custom ocular prosthesis is a good option when reconstruction is done by plastic surgery, and osseointegrated implants are either not possible or not desired. A case of a custom-made ocular acrylic prosthesis is presented with acceptable fit, good retention, and esthetics.

A novel technique of custom ocular prosthesis fabrication

The literature provides several techniques for fabricating ocular prostheses, ranging from stock to custom-made prostheses. A cosmetically acceptable ocular prosthesis is that which reproduces the colour, form and orientation of the iris and allows the patient to return to a ifestyle to which they were previously accustomed. A sequence of steps for construction of custom-made ocular prostheses is outlined in this case report with emphasis on accurate positioning of iris using a transparent graph template. Ocular rehabilitation restores the compromised aesthetics, maintains the normal physiology of the ocular area, and increases the social life and self-esteem of the patient.

A technique for changing the shade of a custom-made ocular prosthesis

Digital imaging is simple, decreases treatment time, and requires minimal artistic skills compared to the irispainting technique for making custom-made artificial eyes. However, the reproducibility of the iris shade may vary as a result of the quality of the paper used, the printer inks, and the amount of monopoly syrup added. A mismatched iris shade will require repeating the entire treatment procedure, including custom tray preparation, impression making, cast fabrication, and wax pattern evaluation. Custom-made artificial parts for improving functional and cosmetic results of ocular prosthetics

Aim - to justify the use of custom-made ocular prostheses aimed at better functional and cosmetic outcomes. Cosmetic outcomes in 520 patients operated for either anophthalmia (89.1%), or ocular subatrophy (6.7%), or congenital micro-/anophthalmia have been analyzed. General and ophthalmic assessment was performed. Relationships were investigated between the results obtained in a particular patient, on the one hand, and primary etiology in his/her case, eye removal technique, postoperative management details, complications, treatments, and preventive measures, on the other. It has been found that, if aiming to avoid the development of anophthalmic syndrome, the choice of surgical technique should be done most carefully so that a muscle stump could be formed and primary prosthesis inserted. Indications for the use of complexly shaped ocular prostheses have been identified. We have also explored the possibilities for correction of cosmetic defects associated with the use of modified stock prostheses. Moreover, in this article particular attention is paid to the importance of cooperation between the oculoplastic surgeon and the ocularist in order to ensure timely orbital reconstruction. Indications for the use of custom-made ocular prostheses of complex shapes have been identified. The range of complications that may arise from their irrational use are discussed.

Rehabilitation of partially eviscerated eye with custom made ocular prosthesis-a case report.

Human eyes are the most precious gift from nature; presence of a pair of eye not only gives expression to life but also adds dignity to the face. The loss of an eye causes disfigurement of the face and causes anxiety, stress and depression in their life. The rehabilitation of patients with congenital or acquired defects of the eye is a challenging job. The aim of the rehabilitation is to restore the patient's normal appearance, comfort along with reasonable functional eye movements. This case report describes the rehabilitation of partially eviscerated eye of the patient with custom made ocular prosthesis.

Comparison of Two Techniques of Rehabilitating Ocular Defect with Custom Made Ocular Prosthesis

Ocular prostheses have a long history of successful use, and variations in the techniques and materials used have been introduced through the years. Modified Impression Technique for Fabrication of a Custom Made Ocular Prosthesis

Making an impression of the anophthalmic socket to facilitate the design of a custom made ocular prosthesis is a common practice. Different impression techniques can be used for its fabrication. The modified impression technique described here requires minimum laboratory procedures as the preliminary impression, secondary impression and wax trial can be done as a single stage procedure.

Custom-made ocular prosthesis for a pediatric patient with unilateral anopthalmia: A case report

Congenitally missing eye, often called as anopthalmia, is a rare condition. This causes disfigurement of the face, which poses psychological effect on children, making them emotionally weak and conscious which, in turn, causes anxiety, stress, and depression at an early age in life. The custom-made ocular prostheses should thus be provided as soon as possible to help children improve their social acceptance. We present a case of 9-year-old boy who reported with congenital anopthalmia of right eye, which was then restored with custom-made ocular prosthesis.

A Simplified Approach to Fabricate a Custom-made Ocular Prosthesis

ABSTRACT Loss of eye causes psychological trauma because of the facial disfigurement associated with the loss of facial structures. Rehabilitation with ocular prosthesis relieves this psychological trauma by restoring the lost facial structure and esthetics of the patient, thus aiding the individual in leading a normal, social and professional life. Though prefabricated ocular prostheses are available, due to better adaptation, comfort and esthetics custom-made ocular prosthesis is more preferable than prefabricated stock shells. A Simplified Approach for Placing the Iris Disc on a Custom Made Ocular Prosthesis: Report of Four Cases

This case report describes a series of four cases of different age group, in which a simplified approach was applied for positioning the iris disc on a custom made ocular prosthesis. For each of the patient, a pre-fabricated eye was selected; whose iris and pupil closely matched that of the natural eye. This was duplicated for use as a tray in impression procedure. Iris portion of the stock eye was trimmed out and oriented on the cast according to previously transferred pupillary mark. This stock eye-wax pattern combination was tested in the eye socket, modified accordingly and finally cured in transparent heat cured acrylic resin. The technique to fabricate ocular prosthesis in present case reports modifies pre-fabricated eye prosthesis to a custom-made fit and aesthetics. This helped us to overcome the disadvantages of poor fit, inadequate movement and complex painting procedure and technique involved in making a custom-made ocular prosthesis. It can be concluded that close adaptation of the custom-made ocular prosthesis to the tissue bed provides maximum comfort and restores full physiologic function to the accessory organs of the eye.

Custom Made Movable Ocular Prosthesis: Esthetics for Social Acceptance

An artificial eye is a prosthetic unit that serves to replace the lost orbital volume when the living eye is either shrunken or surgically removed. The custom prostheses are made to adapt to the contour of the orbital tissues and eyelids, and colored to match the companion eye. Although implant eye prosthesis has a superior outcome, due to economic factors it may not be advisable in all patients. Therefore, a custom-made ocular prosthesis is an excellent alternative. But the common failing of such custom made ocular prosthesis has been that there is no or very limited mobility of the eye prosthesis, which marks it as what it is, an artificial prosthesis. In the following clinical report it will be demonstrated with the help of a patient the use of a movable custom made ocular prosthesis, which shows marked mobility.

Prosthetic Rehabilitation of a Post Evisceration Patient with Custom Made Ocular Prosthesis: A Case Report

Eyes are generally the first feature of the face to be noticed and the presence of a pair of eyes is quite essential to maintain the balance and the esthetics of the face. Loss of eye has a crippling effect on the psychology of the patient. The aim of all ocular prosthetic procedure is to enable rehabilitation of the patient in the society with a normal appearance and self esteem. This article describes a clinical report of rehabilitating post evisceration patient due to glaucoma of right eye with custom made artificial prosthesis using stock eye shell that can create esthetically pleasing results.

This case report presents a palliative treatment for a patient with an enucleated eye by fabricating a custom ocular prosthesis which improved his psychological, physical, social, functional, emotional and spiritual needs.

Restoration of an atrophic eye socket with custom made eye prosthesis, utilizing digital photography

Ocular defects may cause several ocular and orbital disorders, which require surgical intervention. These defects are psychologically disturbing for the patients, and therefore, they require immediate management and rehabilitation by a team of specialist. Ocular prosthesis may be either readymade (stock) or custom made. Fabrication of a custom ocular prosthesis allows for a range of variations during construction. The iris can also be custom made by ocular painting or by digital photography. The optimum cosmetic and functional results of a custom-made prosthesis enhance the patient's rehabilitation to a normal life style. This paper elaborates the technique for fabrication of a custom-made ocular prosthesis for an atrophic eye socket utilizing digital photography.
