Budaya Bakiauan di Sampanahan Kotabaru, Kalimantan Selatan

In Kotabaru, there is a culture known as bakiauan for wedding banquets. It is an attitude of mutual cooperation between residents as a family and emotional strength to work together to minimize the high cost of wedding parties in their area that has been carried out for generations by the community. This article will analyze the culture in depth by considering two values, namely Islamic and socio-cultural values. This research aims to find out about how the culture of social norms and religiosity of the community integrate each other in this bakiauan culture. The method used in this research is the analysis of primary legal materials in the form of the Koran and relevant Hadiths, literature studies, and interviews with several Kotabaru people who have carried out this culture for generations with a sociological approach. Based on this, the results show that the preservation of this culture is motivated by a sense of family and strong emotional ties. So that with the announcement of a wedding party in their community, residents automatically come to help each other fulfill the various needs of the wedding event. The Islamic perspective is used to provide a view that the importance of a sense of Taawun (helping) between fellow humans to ease each other's burdens and an unbroken sense of friendship. The Socio-cultural perspective is used to explain the sociological aspects contained in this culture so that the sense of kinship between communities is getting stronger which goes straight with the noble culture of the Indonesian nation. This discussion leads to the importance of preserving this culture which has a positive influence on society, especially helping during sacred ceremonies, namely marriage events that require a lot of money. This article is expected to be able to contribute to readers about the importance of helping in matters of worship to get closer to God through the Bakiauan culture.

Exploring the Impact of Learning English on Shaping Saudi EFL Learners’ Identities

Language learners’ identities are no longer constant and stable but complicated, conflicting, and multidimensional (Darvin & Norton, 2023; Norton, 1997). Its users’ identities format language and those identities are dynamic because students engage in many discourses and negotiate their positions within diverse communities of practice. The main aim of this mixed-methods study is to explore how learning the English language impacts Saudi students’ identities and what factors contribute to it. To achieve these purposes, the study randomly recruited a sample of 60 male and female college-level students studying for a Bachelor of Education. in English language at Majmaah University’s College of Education – Saudi Arabia- were randomly recruited to complete online questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews were conducted individually with five male and five female high-achieving EFL English as a foreign language learner. The results showed that knowing English is highly valued in Saudi Arabia and essential to securing a good job and achieving personal financial success. The research participants expressed positive perceptions of the English language, native English speakers, and the culture of English-speaking nations, showing that they possessed both intrinsic solid and extrinsic motivational orientations. The outcomes of the interviews and questionnaires indicated that most respondents still needed to create a new foreign-language identity.

A Content Based Analysis of Cultural Depictions in English Textbook

The role that culture plays in teaching English as a global language is complicated by the language's widespread usage in a variety of international situations. Using a well-known paradigm of cultural representation in ELT textbook design by PCTB for grade 9, this study focused on a content analysis of four categories: objects, practices, viewpoints, and persons. The researcher has used qualitative research methods and content analysis as a tool for the analysis. Cultures, which are made up of a society's behavioural patterns that include details about common daily activities and rituals. The variety of foreign cultures that were depicted in these textbooks was obviously unbalanced. This is explained by the fact that the cultures of English-speaking nations are normal in comparison to other civilizations across the globe. It is believed that using English as an international language can help students become more proficient in cross-cultural communication and improve their intercultural competency.If writers of instructional materials focus more on the significance of global culture, this can be made achievable. By using content analysis method the research has evaluated the content of the textbook.

Revisiting Enlightenment Universalism: 18th-Century Lessons on Nonliteral Translations and Transcultural Storytelling

A large number of transcultural fictions appeared in the 18th century, providing us with an important entry into discussing the task of comparative literature today. The 18th-century Oriental tales, stories authored by European writers that adapted from or modeled themselves after loose translations of folk tales from the East, practiced a kind of mental shapeshifting, blurring the boundaries between East and West. The same kind of cross-cultural identification is visible in many other literary narratives from the same period, indicative of a fluid, universalist politics regarding Europe’s relations with the Orient that requires reevaluation. 18th-century transcultural fictions suggest a few tactics for mediating between the necessity of establishing grounds of comparison and the need to draw distinctions. In its search for ways of breaking through the stronghold of cultural nationalism, comparative literature in its contemporary incarnation does well to rethink Enlightenment universalism as encoded in the literary landscape of 18th century Europe.

How Foreign Religious Influences Contributed to Discriminatory Practices Against Women in Japan

This paper aims to argue how the intermingling between Japanese culture and cultures of other nations resulted in the lesser evaluation of women in Japanese religious circles. By analyzing religious texts and figures from the Jomon period (14,000 BCE–300CE) through to the twentieth century it can be observed that contact with foreign religions diminished the status of women in Japanese society. This highlights the links between the imported values from Buddhism, Confucianism and Christianity and the decrease in the veneration of women in Japanese religious contexts, increase in misogynistic understandings of women and slandering of once respected female rulers. These foreign influences continue to define the manner women in Japan are treated to this day.

La comparación de figuras de animales en refranes en chino y español: el caso del ganado bovino

Proverbs are one of the most representative expressions of a country or nation's language and culture. Both in China and Spain, there is a large number of proverbs related to animals, and bovine livestock possesses a special and important meaning in both cultures. Therefore, starting from the theoretical framework of cultural linguistics and linguaculture, and employing the method of comparative analysis, this work aims to construct a corpus of Chinese and Spanish proverbs about bovine livestock and carry out a contrastive analysis. The objective is to reveal the similarities and differences between the images of bovine livestock in the proverbs and cultures of both countries, as well as to better understand the differences between the peoples of China and Spain in terms of their life habits, ways of thinking, and ideologies. By deepening the knowledge of the image of bovine livestock in the proverbs of both nations, we hope to facilitate and increasingly enrich intercultural communications between China and Spain.

The topic of research devoted to the linguistic landscape is gradually expanding, so the concept itself is constantly acquiring new interpretations. The article considers banknotes as elements of the linguistic landscape, and the linguistic landscape as a reflection of language policy, its peculiar public expression. The issuance of banknotes is strictly regulated by the state, while controlling not only the shape, color, decorative elements, denominations and security elements of the banknotes, but also the symbols and languages that appear on them. Along with portraits of historical figures, images related to the culture and historical past of a certain nation, the presence (or absence) of languages on banknotes is also an element of symbolic politics and a part of revealing the language policy of a certain state. The publication examines the languages that were represented in the inscriptions of various series of banknotes issued in the dualistic Austro-Hungarian Monarchy between 1900 and 1919. The article analyzes the reasons for the appearance of different languages on banknotes of the specified period. Based on the languages depicted on the banknotes, it is shown that the two main parts of the federal state of Austria-Hungary pursued different language policies. The article highlights that, according to the concept of dualism, the German language dominated on one side of the Austro-Hungarian banknotes, and the Hungarian language on the other. On the front side, along with the most important information, which was provided only in German, the denomination of the banknote was indicated in the languages of several nations of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The reverse side was purely monolingual – Hungarian. Therefore, the denomination was indicated on the banknote in a total of ten languages: German, Czech, Croatian, Polish, Italian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovenian, and also Ruthenian or Ukrainian. The article tries to find an answer to why the Czech, Croatian, Serbian, Polish, Italian, Romanian, Slovenian and Ukrainian (Ruthenian) languages were used on banknotes next to German, and why the reverse side of the banknotes remained monolingual (Hungarian). The authors concluded that even states that issue multilingual banknotes guarantee that the state language should be in a dominant position.

This research aims to investigate the global marketing strategies implemented by Spotify, the world's leading music streaming platform, with a focus on product personalization, cultural adaptation, and collaboration and partnerships. The research methodology used in this research is a literature review with a qualitative approach and secondary data types. The literature review approach was chosen because it allows collecting information from various relevant sources to answer the research problem formulation. The type of data used is secondary data, obtained from sources such as Spotify annual reports, market research data, academic journal articles, and industry media. The data collection method is carried out by taking data from the library, reading, taking notes and processing research materials. The results of the study conclude that Spotify has succeeded in implementing an effective global marketing strategy to expand its reach and influence in the competitive and diverse music market. With a focus on product personalization, and collaborative partnerships, Spotify has demonstrated significant innovation in facing the challenges of globalization.

ENTRE EL MITE I LA REALITAT. ELEMENTS MEDIEVALISTES DEL CATALANISME PARTICULARISTA DE V. ALMIRALL ( LO CATALANISME , 1886)

This article analyzes Lo catalanisme (1886) by V. Almirall through the lens of Medievalism and Cultural Nationalism. In his work Almirall consistently describes the Crown of Aragon as a confederació and the polities that formed it as estats . This particular characterization of a composite monarchy as a simple confederation of states has clearly more to do with the aspirations of nineteenth-century Catalanism than with the reality of medieval Iberia, and therefore represents a good example of the ideological use of the past. By emphasizing the Crown of Aragon’s decentralized structure and by downplaying the role of the monarchy, in fact, Almirall intended to promote two key ideas about Catalonia’s past, present and future. First: when given the opportunity, Catalans have always organized themselves according to the principle of federalism. Second: the values of liberty and democracy have always been at the core of their collective identity as Catalans. The message is clear: the creation of an autonomous Catalonia within a federally organized Spain is not only a political project that reflects Catalonia’s desire for auto-determination but also a tribute to its history and identity.

Ethnobotany and animals in Girmitiya diaspora: explorations from the Caribbean

ABSTRACT Diasporas presuppose that emigrants establish an ethnic group in their newly adopted homelands while realigning with their motherland. The glue of this bonding is presumed to be language, religion, nationalism, and lived culture. However, this paper argues that ethnic communities are enabled by Indian ethnobotany and animals (IEA). The paper argues, first, that IEA served as a resource to preserve ethnic foods, rituals, and identities; second, that IEA were crucial ingredients in the emergence of the Girmitiya community as they served as inputs to several domains of communal life; and third, that the IEA represented a highly specific diaspora link between the Girmitiya communities with India. Using the case of Caribbean societies, the paper focuses on the relationship between Indian nature and culture and, by so doing, addresses a void in the study of the Girmitiya ethnogenesis, the constitution of the Girmitiya diaspora, and the globalisation of Indian nature.

Analisis Nilai-Nilai Kearifan Lokal Program Sekolah Budaya Sebagai Penunjang Projek Profil Pelajar Pancasila dalam Kurikulum Merdeka di SDN Kaliwining 07 Rambipuji Jember

In Indonesia, the curriculum has changed several times in line with the change of ministers and the needs of students. Recently it has been intensified in relation to the independent curriculum initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The Merdeka curriculum promotes a comfortable, happy and structured learning atmosphere for students and educators. To achieve the expected competencies in the implementation of the independent curriculum, a project was designed to strengthen the profile of Pancasila students as a curricular activity to support competency achievement in the learning process. To support the achievement of the competencies expected in the Pancasila student profile project, Kaliwining 07 State Elementary School implemented a cultural school program, where students while in the school environment were listened to by national and regional songs, as well as traditional games. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with a descriptive type. While the data collection technique uses three stages, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis used is Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Test the validity of the data using source triangulation and technique triangulation. So as to produce research results that, the application of the cultural school program at SDN Kaliwining 07 Rambipuji Jember which grows and develops colors the quality of life in schools which also contributes to instilling local wisdom values. in the Pancasila student profile project, where students are expected to be able to understand and apply Pancasila values ​​in everyday life. One way to achieve this goal is to integrate local wisdom values ​​into learning activities in the school environment through the Cultural School program. Thus, students can understand that Pancasila is not just a concept or ideology, but also includes local wisdom values ​​that are part of the culture and character of the Indonesian nation

The Intellectual Class and the Rise of German Cultural Nationalism

German cultural nationalism emerged in the context of the invasion of French culture. This cultural nationalism was different from the nationalism represented by Britain and France, which focused on the expression of nationalism from the cultural level, and made use of cultural connection and unity to achieve the establishment of a nation state. In the 17th and 18th centuries, French culture invaded Germany in all aspects, and the aristocrat and the middle classes of the German states were proud of speaking French, while German was neglected as a national language. Against the background of the political and economic unification of the German region, a group of Deutsch intellectuals began to actively propagate and promote the German culture and language, hoping to establish a unified German national identity from the cultural identity to complete the unification of the country, and to make the German state regain its historical glory. The subsequent historical development proved that German cultural nationalism became the foundation stone of German unification. After the Napoleonic Wars, German cultural nationalism was further transformed into German political democracy, and Prussia finally completed the unification. How did German cultural nationalism emerge from all this, and what was the role of the German intellectual class in it? By studying this period of history, this paper is able to further understand the intricate international context and international situation in Western Europe at that time. At the same time, it draws on the positive factors of German cultural development.

Becoming Wanghong: How Foreigners Achieve Internet Celebrity in China

The burgeoning internet celebrity industry in China has encouraged the emergence of foreign wanghong (洋网红) as active content producers on the Chinese internet. Achieving online fame and constructing a resonant personal brand while staying within Chinese state’s permissible boundaries is a challenge for all internet influencers in China. Foreign wanghong, for their part, also have to deal with Chinese publics’ ambivalence and fluctuating perspectives on engaging foreign culture, expectations around “being foreign” and cultural nationalism fed by the currents of geopolitics. This study focuses on the performance and personas of foreign wanghong and investigates how these creators navigate the complexities of the Chinese internet to achieve substantial followings. Going beyond treating foreign participants in Chinese digital media spaces as co-opted instruments of propaganda, we take seriously foreign creators’ articulations, constructions and self-presentations of foreignness and acculturation in their efforts to earn social, cultural and economic capital in the competitive Chinese internet celebrity sphere. A mixed-method content analytical study of several hundred Douyin videos generated by 33 foreign wanghong reveals the adoption of calculated self-presentation and cross-cultural communication skills alongside a constant negotiation of an individual’s own foreignness and local constructs of the “typical foreigner”.

Cultural Nationalism or National Culture as Portrayed in Indian Popular Culture: The Case of Indian Visual Media

Ever since Friedrich Meinecke proposed the distinction between the terms “cultural nation” (Kulturnation) as expressed in fine art and “Statsnation” (political nation), the cultural sphere of nationalism or nationalist idealogy/culture has been quoted either out of context or misquoted/misinterpreted to demean other cultures and reinforced ostensibly to carve out a false or “imagined” national identity in the Indian context and more so in the Indian popular culture. Does it reflect the culture of the majority populace in India? Why does it hegemonize other cultures? With the mainstream narratives and myths that underlie the Indian media, popular culture galvanizes around terms like nationalism, national identity and others. The main aim of this article is to unravel and deconstruct the notion of national culture and all the accompanying terms associated with it. It becomes significant in the present socio-cultural-politico-Indian context with its approach towards feudalism and postcolonial imperatives. The main question is how these terms are appropriated and subverted to form a new meaning, perhaps a historical revision. Randomly, nine Indian films were chosen for observation. The analysis reveals that a microscopic minority invokes the metanarrative of hypernationalism and cultural homogenization to placate the democratic forces and achieve their hidden agenda. Since it is value-based, its recommendations too primarily belong to the moral turpitude of those who are in power.

The Communication Strategy of Chinese Liquor Culture from a Cross-Cultural Perspective

Chinese liquor contains a rich culture. It is not only the representative of the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation but also a treasure of the world civilization. In addition, it has also become the envoy of China and the world in trade, economy, and people’s hearts. Based on the cross-cultural perspective, this paper makes a thorough study of the strategies of Chinese liquor culture communication to the outside world, analyzes its communication significance, and puts forward the corresponding measures to promote its communication, in the hope of enriching the communication connotation and improving the communication value; at the same time, it can provide a beneficial reference for China’s liquor culture inheritance and communication.

(Re)Constructing the Nation in Sunlight on a Broken Column: Hossain's Perspective on the Partition of the Subcontinent

Gellner (1983) defines a nation as a myth whereas nationalism is an ideology through which people (re)invent traditions and culture to construct a nation. Nationalism revives extinct languages and reimagines extinct customs. To strengthen their nation's discourse, South Asian female writers have contributed significantly to the invention of traditions and the reconstruction of their lost culture. By addressing her nation's history and culture in her work, Hosain has also bolstered her national discourse. It is commonly known that history is typically presented through the eyes of men. Even though women have contributed substantially to the national process, their opinions are not included in history books. Since men write history, history favors men by making them the main heroes. This study aims to provide a female viewpoint on the history of the partition of the subcontinent. Thus, the researcher has selected Attia Hossain's novel, Sunlight on a Broken Column, to view her perspective on the nation and the partition of India. The concept of a nation is complex to comprehend. Different theorists have different definitions of the nation. Renan (1883), Hobsbawm and Ranger (1983), and Anderson's (1991) theories related to the nation have been used to construct a theoretical framework for this research. This study investigates factors contributing to the construction of a nation and nation-state by referencing the partition of the sub-continent and the formation of two nation-states, Pakistan and India.

Research on the Protection and Inheritance of Oroqen Birch Bark Art

The art of birch bark in the Oroqen nationality is an important part of Oroqen culture, deeply rooted in the production, life and traditional culture of the Oroqen nationality. It shows distinct national characteristics and unique charm of forest culture, and has extremely high aesthetic and historical value. However, with the accelerating process of social modernization, the traditional life and cultural environment of the Oroqen nationality are undergoing profound changes, which makes the protection and inheritance of Oroqen birch bark art face great challenges. In order to ensure the sustainable development of this art form, it is necessary for us to conduct in-depth discussion, seek effective protection measures and inheritance ways, and further promote the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation.

Knowing more, worrying less? Internet use eases public concern about immigrant cultural threat

The concern regarding the impact of cross-border migrants on a nation's culture is a key factor that hampers local acceptance of immigrants. In this light, mitigating cultural anxieties can enhance immigrant acceptance to some extent. This paper contends that the internet facilitates people to consume immigration information through digital media, thereby reducing unjustified concerns about the cultural implications of immigrants. Leveraging a cross-national survey spanning 17 Western countries, we find that internet use is indeed negatively associated with perceived immigrant cultural threat. This association remains to hold across several robustness checks. Follow-up analyses indicate that internet use can alleviate immigrant cultural concerns for those with regular left-wing digital media exposure, but not for those who consume right-wing digital media frequently. Additionally, social media use and personal ideology are also found to have moderating effects, with internet use being less effective among individuals who use social media heavily or are ideologically right-leaning. This paper sheds light on the role of the internet in fostering inter-group understanding and alleviating out-group discrimination.

An Exploration of Realism in Death Narratives in Contemporary Chinese and Korean New Youth Films from a Global Cultural Perspective

With the advent of economic globalization leading to cultural globalization, countries are integrating and innovating their indigenous cultures while absorbing and borrowing from the film cultures of other nations. Chinese and Korean New Youth Films employ a multi-genre narrative mode combining "youth" with realism. This paper conducts a comparative study of Chinese new youth film Better Days and the Korean new youth film Next Sohee, exploring the influence of global cultural perspectives on Chinese and Korean New Youth Films from the perspective of death narratives, the realistic application of death narratives in Chinese and Korean New Youth Films, as well as the differentiated narrative strategies of Chinese and Korean New Youth Films. This study further extends to the real significance and value of death imagery in youth films.

“Partialist” and “universalist”: American exceptionalism in antebellum writing on national identity

AbstractIn this article, I analyze six well‐known antebellum essays on US national identity from the perspective of their engagement with the contemporary exceptionalist discourse. My focus is on their representations of the particular and the universal, whose paradoxical relationship lies at the core of all national exceptionalisms. I approach antebellum exceptionalism as part of the history in which the authors of these texts (Emerson, Fuller, Simms, Douglass, and Delany) lived their lives and to which they responded in different ways. The analysis shows how the universal–particular duality at the core of US exceptionalism is conceived and operates in these essays' discourses of American identity. A tentative conclusion is that whenever the universal dimension of American exceptionalism is enlarged or challenged by other universal criteria, the nationalist ideology loosens its grip; conversely, its presence is stronger when particularization occurs. Furthermore, the representations of the universal and the particular in these texts are discussed in relationship with certain aspects of US exceptionalism as a cultural phenomenon of antebellum history, namely, Manifest Destiny, cultural nationalism, the concept of civilization, and the growing tensions of slavery and racial discrimination in the free states.
