Principles of good practice for translation of electronic clinical outcome assessments

BackgroundWhile many publications have outlined good practice recommendations for translation and electronic implementation of clinical outcome assessments (COAs), they are often treated as independent processes. The scientific literature currently lacks recommended guidelines on the process of concurrent translation, cultural adaptation and electronic implementation of COAs for clinical research. In response to this need, the ISOQOL Translation and Cultural Adaptation Special Interest Group (TCA-SIG) sought to identify actionable steps for addressing the scientific and operational intricacies in this concurrent process.MethodsUsing snowball sampling, semi-structured questions were sent to language service providers (LSPs), electronic clinical outcome assessment (eCOA) providers, and developers/copyright holders. The TCA-SIG workgroup, consisting of 13 members, then led the methodological groundwork for the disseminated surveys and established a cohesive set of recommendations.ResultsThe collective feedback that led to the recommendations included a total of 30 experts who responded to the surveys. Most of the respondents worked in companies or represented organizations based in the US and Europe.RecommendationsThe recommendations fall into two main categories: namely, operational and scientific. The operational recommendations consist of active involvement from all stakeholders, the communication of clear expectations from the start, and better clarification of timelines of LSPs involved. Examples of scientific recommendations are electronic language feasibility assessment (ELFA), screenshot proofreading, as well as COA-specific developer and copyright holder guidelines for electronic implementation. COA-specific guidelines and instructions for electronic implementation and evaluation were seen to be needed and key recommendations are discussed in detail in this paper.

A chromosome-length genome assembly for the Pismo clam, Tivela stultorum, a long-lived bivalve species severely impacted by overfishing.

The Pismo clam, Tivela stultorum, is an ecologically and economically important species that inhabiting sandy beaches and subtidal zones in central and southern California, USA, and northern Baja California, Mexico. This long lived venerid clam species is of great management, cultural and conservation interest in California where it was harvested for centuries by indigenous people and then nearly extirpated by intense commercial and recreational overfishing in the mid 1900's. A recreational fishery continues today in California, however T. stultorum faces pressure from poaching, overharvest, and the loss of sandy beaches from rising sea levels and beach erosion. Understanding the susceptibility and resilience of Pismo clams to these pressures is essential for their conservation. We used Pacific Biosciences HiFi long sequencing reads and Dovetail Omni-C proximity reads to assemble a highly contiguous genome of 763Mb. The genome had a contig N50 of 13Mb and a scaffold N50 of 38Mb with a BUSCO completeness score of 95%. Most of the genome sequences (96%) were contained in 19 scaffolds at least 10MB long, consistent with prior evidence that venerid clam genomes are composed of 19 autosomes. This reference genome will enable a more complete understanding of the ecology and evolutionary dynamics of T. stultorum via population genomic analyses, which will help assess risks from climate, fishing, environmental change, and susceptibilities due to life history. Our goal is to better support the continued recovery, informed management and conservation, and future persistence of T. stultorum, a long lived and highly valued clam species.

Influences, Learning Styles and Learning Preferences of Learners in Special Program in Foreign Language in Korean

The study explored the dominant learning styles, influential factors, and preferred learning activities and media of Grade 7 students enrolled in the Korean language program, aiming to enhance instructional material design and teaching strategies. Adopting a one-group descriptive research design, the study involved a total population of 80 students. A purposive sampling procedure was used in selecting the respondents. The study covered the scope within the second semester of the school year 2021-2022. Data collection employed two main instruments: Fleming’s VARK model, which identifies learning styles (Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic), and a 20-item questionnaire adapted from Ancho (2019) to identify learning preferences. Results were analyzed using frequency, percentage, and mean. The findings reveal that the majority of respondents were visual learners, favoring activities that included reading and writing dialogues as well as the use of comic strips. These preferences suggest that visually engaging and text-rich materials are particularly effective in facilitating language acquisition. Additionally, factors such as cultural interest and relevance of Korean pop culture emerged as significant motivators for learning the language. The study underscores the importance of tailoring instructional materials to align with students’ dominant learning styles and preferences. By incorporating visually stimulating and interactive media, educators can enhance engagement and improve learning outcomes. These insights provide valuable input for curriculum development, particularly in designing activity sheets and pedagogical approaches that resonate with learners’ needs and interests.

Analysis of the Value of Japanese Language Education and Expansion Path of Foreign Language Learning at the University Level under the Foreign Language Policy of the New College Entrance Examination: An Investigation Based on LISREL Structural Equation Modeling

Abstract This paper utilizes intercultural knowledge test papers and regression analysis to explore the intercultural cultivation value and economic value of Japanese language education on the basis of the new college entrance examination foreign language policy. Then it provides an overview of the LISREL model, discusses the advantages of the LISREL structural equation, and describes the process of model construction. Variables such as family factors, cultural interest, learning environment, and foreign language learning expansion are selected and the relationships between them are verified. It is analyzed that after the implementation of the foreign language policy of the new college entrance examination, 64% of the students’ intercultural knowledge scores are in the 85-100 range, and their intercultural knowledge aspect is at a high level. Japanese listening and speaking ability had a significant effect on starting year salary, demonstrating the better economic value of Japanese language education. Family factors, learning environment, and cultural interest can all have a significant impact on students’ foreign language learning.

A Roman holiday with ‘open heritage’? Exploring copyright law and cultural heritage law’s role for our collective cultural interest in Italian film and Italian fashion

This article explores how the law affects an audience’s collective recognition that a film and fashion in film is of cultural interest. It argues that copyright law today can play an important and crucial role in a film’s continued relevance and in the preservation and valorization of cinema as copyright law regulates the copying and display of a film and its images, including the fashion images within it. Likewise, it shows how cultural heritage law plays an important and crucial role in the preservation and continued relevance of fashion through film as cultural heritage law applies certain rules and norms to the preservation of film reels and the archives and institutions in which they are stored. The article uses Roman Holiday () and La Dolce Vita () as case studies and considers Cinecittà’s description of itself as an ‘open heritage’ to explore the relationship between law, fashion and film.

Preferences For Cultural Relic Preservation Method In Chinese Traditional Museums

Static exhibits in Chinese traditional museums pose challenges in maintaining connections between the public and museum artwork. There is a need for a better exhibition method to stimulate visitors’ monotonous experience of cultural relics and visitors' sense in Chinese museums. The aim of this study is to identify the best preferences for cultural relic preservation methods in Chinese traditional museums. This systematic literature review paper discusses the systematic inferences of cultural relic preservation strategies in Chinese museums, heritage preservation techniques, and the human-exhibition interaction (HEI) concept that could aid the sustainability of cultural heritage interest while conveying cultural heritage-related knowledge in China. This study found that mixed realities (XR) and Human-Exhibition-Interaction (HEI) could facilitate diverse cultural heritage restoration, accuracy and sustainability when adhering to museum exhibitions. The proposed preferences for the cultural relic preservation exhibition method could aid in better visitors’ experience and sense of cultural relics in Chinese museums

The Impact of Satisfaction with the Red Ginseng Pack Experience Program on Local Festivals: Focusing on the Geumsan Ginseng Festival

This study analyzed whether satisfaction with the red ginseng pack experience program affects the regional development of Geumsangun by analyzing visitors to the red ginseng pack experience program of the Geumsan Ginseng Festival to identify the desires and needs of visitors to the Geumsan-gun Ginseng Festival held every year. I want to be helpful. The analysis results are as follows. First, in terms of the impact of the motivation to participate in the red ginseng pack program on satisfaction, the motivation to participate in the red ginseng pack experience is higher in the four sub-factors of program content, surrounding environment, experience products, and promotional information, and the higher the cultural experience, product interest, and escape from daily life. Satisfaction appeared to increase. Second, in terms of the impact of the motivation to participate in the red ginseng pack program on regional development, it was found that the higher the motivation for participation in the red ginseng pack experience, such as cultural experience, escape from daily life, and product interest, the higher the regional development. Third, in terms of the impact of satisfaction with the red ginseng pack program on regional development, it was found that the higher the program content, promotional information, products, and surrounding environment among the satisfaction levels of the red ginseng pack experience, the higher the regional development. This article details a lighting proposal for a historic monument, which includes two main systems: one focused on the building's façade and another on the sidewalk surrounding it. The aim is to highlight the most emblematic architectural elements through a uniform design that avoids visual distortions and minimizes the impact on the structure, using sustainable technologies to reduce light pollution and ensure the preservation of the building. Likewise, the sidewalk lighting is designed to improve the safety and comfort of pedestrians, integrating harmoniously with the façade design. This system seeks to maintain a visual balance between the monument and its urban environment, promoting its perception as a point of cultural and tourist interest.

Effects of personality, motives, and socioeconomics on hard cider consumption

AbstractWe used a survey to investigate the effects of personality, motives, and socioeconomics for drinking hard cider among 3,373 Norwegian respondents in 2023. Wine interest, cultural interest, having a high score on conspicuous attitude, or being female increased the predicted consumption frequencies of hard cider. Scoring high on the taste index, being a conscientious respondent, being older, higher educated, or believing religion is important reduced the predicted frequencies. The estimated effects were compared with the corresponding effects for red, white, and sparkling wines. Cultural interest and wine interest are the main motives for hard cider and all categories of wine.

Factors Behind Cessation of Illegal Logging by Local Communities for Valuable Timber-producing Endemic Species, Hopea celebica

Hopea celebica is a species of Dipterocarpaceae that produces strong and durable wood. This species is endemic to Sulawesi Island, where its spread is restricted to specific habitat types in the southern part of the island. The high quality of the wood has exposed this species to high levels of illegal logging and is endangered. However, in the last two decades, the threat of logging to this tree species has ceased to occur. Through field surveys and interviewing of respondents in 6 small FGDs, this study aims to determine the factors behind the cessation of illegal logging activities. We found that this species has good regeneration ability and identified 3 leading causes of stopping illegal logging of H. celebica: restricting its habitat to the Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park, the change in cultural interest from building houses on stilts to concrete houses, and the shift in the lifestyle of young generation who are no longer interested in working as woodcutters. Thus, the cessation of illegal logging of H. celebica is not due to the correct public perception of the importance of conserving H. celebica to increase its population so that it can be used sustainably in the future. The Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park still needs to make people aware of the importance of H. celebica conservation.

Consumer behavior and spending patterns on cultural goods and services

This study investigates the factors influencing consumer behavior and spending patterns on cultural goods and services. Using a quantitative research approach with Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), data were gathered through a structured survey of 350 respondents from diverse demographic backgrounds. The results reveal that cultural interest, social influence, and perceived value have a significant and positive impact on consumer spending behavior, with cultural interest showing the strongest influence (β = 0.45, p < 0.01). Additionally, the study highlights the mediating role of perceived value in the relationship between social influence and spending behavior. These findings provide practical insights for marketers and cultural institutions aiming to better understand consumer motivations in the cultural sector. Future research should consider expanding the sample size and exploring other potential mediating variables.

Long-term monitoring of the hypogeal Etruscan Tomba degli Scudi, Tarquinia, Italy. Early detection of black spots, investigation of fungal community and evaluation of their biodeterioration potential.

Hypogeal environments with Cultural Heritage interest pose a real challenge for their preservation and conservation. The ancient Etruscan Necropolis of Tarquinia, Italy, consists of 200 tombs decorated with extraordinary mural paintings, of great artistic and historical value. Since the beginning of the restoration campaign in 2016, a regular microbiological survey has been performed in the Tomba degli Scudi. The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of an expansion of black spots on the pictorial layers recently observed. To determine the origin of the black spots in the atrium chamber of the Tomba degli Scudi, the fungal community was sampled using various techniques: cellulose discs, swabs and nylon membranes and investigated by a multi-analytical approach. The obtained results suggest that the identified fungal strains (e.g. Gliomastix murorum and Pseudogymnoascus pannorum) are common to many subterranean environments around the world, such as Lascaux cave. The continuous and long-term monitoring made it possible to detect alterations at an early stage and assess the harmfulness of different fungal strains. This work is a demonstration of the effectiveness of prevention and monitoring actions within these fragile and valuable environments.

Ethnobotany of Plants Around Anaphalis javanica in the ‘Penanjakan Resort’ Area of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (BTSN)

Abstract This research was conducted to reveal the potential of plants around Edelweiss Flowers (Anaphalis javanica) in the BTSN Penanjakan Resort Area and their benefits according to the local community. This study was carried out by plant inventory by use purposive sampling to choose the study site to 5 points with a plot size of 2×2 m2. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to find out the types of plants and their benefits. The results of the interviews were compiled to determine the significance of cultural interest index (ICS) and described based on ICS calculations. This study indicated that 17 different plant species were present around the growth site of Anaphalis javanica in the Penanjakan Resort Area of BTSN with the highest ICS value in Debregeasia longifolia or “mencogan” which has other benefits as a good water absorber.

Evaluating Mixed Reality Technology for Enhancing Art Pedagogy

The lack of interest among students in studying art, particularly the traditional Indonesian art form of batik, poses a significant challenge for educational institutions. Despite its cultural significance, the education sector lacks effective strategies to introduce and enhance students' interest in batik within the art curriculum. Several consequences can arise if the education sector fails to implement strategic measures to address this issue promptly. This could lead to a gradual erosion of cultural heritage and a loss of artistic traditions passed down through generations, and students may miss out on valuable opportunities for self-expression and cultural exploration. This study addresses this issue by leveraging mixed reality and gamification in a batik creation application. This innovative approach not only enhances the pedagogy of art education but also aims to revive cultural interest. The study employs Software Testing and PIECES to evaluate user experiences, emphasizing user comfort and smooth interactions. By assessing the application with tools like Unity Profiler and Hololens 2 performance testing, the study ensures an optimal user experience, contributing to the broader goal of preserving Indonesia's cultural heritage through innovative and accessible educational solutions. The results fall within the range of 4.04 to 4.24, categorizing user satisfaction as "satisfied" and the application running at an optimal 60 frames per second (FPS). This implies that users responded positively to the application, indicating that implementing mixed reality technology in batik learning provides a satisfying experience.

Applying Classic Literature to Facilitate Cultural Heritage Tourism for Youth through Multimedia E-Book

The majority of cultural heritage tourism globally lacks the diversity of young tourists since there is a universal trend among youth worldwide considering that cultural and heritage stories are unrelated to their lifestyles and not designed for them. This research therefore makes use of classic Thai literature that the target group (grade 12) has studied, “Khun Chang Khun Phaen (KCKP)”, which includes actual heritage places in the province of Suphan Buri. It aims to create and evaluate design guidelines applying classic literature to facilitate cultural heritage tourism and interest in learning classic literature and history, specifically for youth, in three phases. In Phase 1, design guidelines are developed based on the answers of on-site questionnaires distributed to 600 young people. In Phase 2, a multimedia KCKP e-book is created, and in Phase 3, this multimedia KCKP e-book is evaluated using the results from 100 on-site questionnaires—serving as the research’s success criterion. The findings indicate that this e-book may spark a strong interest in youth for KCKP literature (mean = 4.53/5), cultural heritage tourism (mean = 4.56/5), and history (mean = 4.72/5). These findings affirm that the design guidelines effectively engage young tourists and promote an appreciation for cultural heritage, history, and classic literature.

Lviv (Lemberg) Artefacts Of Theobald Böhm’s Flute Workshop

The analysis of artefacts from Theobald Böhm’s Second Flute Workshop is crucial for understanding 19th-century music industry developments and craftsmanship. This study aims to analyze the reception of Böhm’s reforms and their popularization among specialists and intellectuals, particularly in the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, part of the Austrian Empire. The main methods include analysis of archival materials, comparison of newly manufactured flutes with previous forms, and retrospective analysis. The study examines Böhm’s activities and focuses on his second workshop (1855-1858). The investigation of Lviv artefacts from Böhm’s workshop is of significant scientific and cultural interest, enhancing our understanding of flute evolution and Böhm’s contributions. The study highlights the importance of Böhm’s flute artefacts in the history of flute art, refining and complementing existing knowledge and supporting further research. The early years following Böhm’s 1847 reform reveal the shock and varied reactions of industry experts, including rejection, refutation, adaptation, or acceptance of Böhm’s inventions. The initial stages of mastering these new instruments in European provincial centers, such as Lviv, provide unique insights into the professional crisis triggered by the reform. The Lviv example illustrates distinct attitudes towards Böhm’s innovations and general trends filtered through Galician consciousness and mentality. This study utilizes previously unpublished archival information and facts, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of this pivotal event in flute history.

Going Inside a Historical Brazilian Diamond from the Spada Collection (19th Century)

The characterization of objects of historical and cultural interest represents a crucial topic, specifically when it regards gemstones. Actually, the advanced investigation of precious minerals of gemological interest requires exclusively non-destructive analyses which are also suitable for determining their provenance when it is unknown. In this study, a non-destructive analytical protocol, previously tested on diamonds for petrogenetic studies, has been applied to a natural diamond of very high historical and gemological value, donated in 1852 by Monsignor Lavinio de ‘Medici Spada to the Museum of Earth Sciences of Sapienza University (Rome). The analytical protocol used includes X-ray diffraction topography, micro-computed X-ray tomography, single-crystal micro-X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show the presence of dislocations originating from inclusions and a very low degree of plastic deformation. The aggregation states of its N impurities show that this diamond is type IaAB, while the inclusions consist of olivine (Fo92-93), suggesting a lithospheric origin. The historical references found in the catalogs of the Museum indicate only a Brazilian origin, without any reference to the mining district. The information acquired in this study, enhanced by document research on mining in Brazil since 1700, suggests that the diamond likely comes from the district of Diamantina, Mina Gerais, Brazil.

Exploring Chinese as a second language learners’ motivational factors: Influence of selves and contexts

AbstractThe past decades have witnessed a significant increase in the number of global Chinese as a second language (L2) learners. Accompanying the surge is the growing body of research on their motivational factors. This mixed‐methods study was primarily informed by Dörnyei's L2 motivational self system (L2MSS), aiming to scrutinize Chinese as a second language (CSL) learners’ motivational factors from the perspectives of selves and contexts. Leveraging the concepts of the ideal L2 self and ought‐to L2 self from L2MSS, the anti‐ought‐to‐L2 self was incorporated into the framework. The L2 learning experience was reframed into three contextual dimensions, including attitudes toward the L2 community, cultural interest and pedagogical influence. Data were collected from 231 international students from a Chinese comprehensive university. Factor analyses confirmed seven motivational factors. Findings revealed that the ideal L2 self, ought‐to L2 self, pedagogical influence and cultural interest were effective in predicting individuals’ intended learning effort. Significant differences were identified in the motivational selves based on demographic variables of employment status, gender and student type. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the motivations of languages other than English learners and the refinement of the L2MSS framework. It also offers CSL instructors pedagogical implications for developing targeted teaching strategies and promoting motivations among students from distinct educational and socio‐economic backgrounds.
