ADVERSITY QUOTIENT DAN PENALARAN KREATIF MATEMATIS SISWA SMA DALAM PEMBELAJARAN ARGUMENT DRIVEN INQUIRY PADA MATERI TURUNAN FUNGSI

This study is designed in the form of experiment with the design of control group and posttest only aimed at investigating the role of learning that Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) in improving senior high school students’ creative mathematical reasoning ability. The population of this study was senior high school students’ in Cimahi City and the samples were 69 senior high school students’ set purposively and randomly to be included into the experimental class and control class. Based on the results and discussion, it is concluded that: (1) creative mathematical reasoning ability of the students who received Argument Driven Inquiry (ADI) instruction is better than those who received direct instruction is reviewed based on the whole and the type of Adversity Quotient (Quitter / AQ Low, Champer / AQ Medium, and the Climber / AQ High); Learning factors and type of Adversity Quotient (AQ) affect the achievement of creative mathematical reasoning skills students. In addition, there is no interaction effect between learning and AQ together in developing the creative mathematical reasoning ability of students'; (3) creative mathematical reasoning ability of students’ has not been achieved optimally on the indicators novelty.

Creative reasoning and shifts of knowledge in the mathematics classroom

In the course of the last few years, we have investigated shifts of knowledge among different settings in inquiry-based mathematics classrooms: the individual, the small group and the whole class community. The different theoretical perspectives we used for analysing group work and for analysing whole class discussions, and the empirical data led us to hypothesize links between shifts of knowledge and students` creative reasoning. Therefore, the goal of the current study is to investigate creative reasoning within the shifts of knowledge in an inquiry-based classroom. Specifically, we ask: What is the role of creative mathematical reasoning in the shifts of knowledge between the knowledge agents and their followers in the classroom? To this end, we analysed a whole class discussion and the subsequent work of a small group. Our findings show that creative reasoning has a role in characterizing shifts of knowledge in the classroom. In particular, we found that the students who expressed creative reasoning all had followers and thus became knowledge agents, while students` contributions that were not characterized as creative were not always followed up. Finally, in cases where both, the knowledge agent and the follower expressed creative ideas, we named these ideas milestones.

Creative and algorithmic mathematical reasoning: effects of transfer-appropriate processing and effortful struggle

ABSTRACTTwo separate studies, Jonsson et al. (J. Math Behav. 2014;36: 20–32) and Karlsson Wirebring et al. (Trends Neurosci Educ. 2015;4(1–2):6–14), showed that learning mathematics using creative mathematical reasoning and constructing their own solution methods can be more efficient than if students use algorithmic reasoning and are given the solution procedures. It was argued that effortful struggle was the key that explained this difference. It was also argued that the results could not be explained by the effects of transfer-appropriate processing, although this was not empirically investigated. This study evaluated the hypotheses of transfer-appropriate processing and effortful struggle in relation to the specific characteristics associated with algorithmic reasoning task and creative mathematical reasoning task. In a between-subjects design, upper-secondary students were matched according to their working memory capacity.The main finding was that the superior performance associated with practicing creative mathematical reasoning was mainly supported by effortful struggle, however, there was also an effect of transfer-appropriate processing. It is argued that students need to struggle with important mathematics that in turn facilitates the construction of knowledge. It is further argued that the way we construct mathematical tasks have consequences for how much effort students allocate to their task-solving attempt.

Mathematical Reasoning Requirements in Swedish National Physics Tests

This paper focuses on one aspect of mathematical competence, namely mathematical reasoning, and how this competency influences students’ knowing of physics. This influence was studied by analysing the mathematical reasoning requirements upper secondary students meet when solving tasks in national physics tests. National tests are constructed to mirror the goals stated in the curricula, and these goals are similar across national borders. The framework used for characterising the mathematical reasoning required to solve the tasks in the national physics tests distinguishes between imitative and creative mathematical reasoning. The analysis process consisted of structured comparisons between representative student solutions and the students’ educational history. Of the 209 analysed tasks, 3/4 required mathematical reasoning in order to be solved. Creative mathematical reasoning, which, in particular, involves reasoning based on intrinsic properties, was required for 1/3 of the tasks. The results in this paper give strong evidence that creative mathematical reasoning is required to achieve higher grades on the tests. It is also confirmed that mathematical reasoning is an important and integral part of the physics curricula; and, it is suggested that the ability to use creative mathematical reasoning is necessary to fully master the curricula.

Investigating Upper Secondary School Teachers’ Conceptions: Is Mathematical Reasoning Considered Gendered?

This study examines Swedish upper secondary school teachers’ gendered conceptions about students’ mathematical reasoning: whether reasoning was considered gendered and, if so, which type of reasoning was attributed to girls and boys. The sample consisted of 62 teachers from six different schools from four different locations in Sweden. The results showed that boys were significantly more often attributed to memorised reasoning and delimiting algorithmic reasoning. Girls were connected to gamiliar algorithmic reasoning, a reasoning type where you use standard method when solving a mathematical task. Creative mathematical founded reasoning, which is novel, plausible and founded in mathematical properties, was not considered gendered.
