First Human Beings, Orangutangs and Urgeschlechter: Fichte and the Debates on the Origins of Human Race and History
  • Apr 10, 2026
  • Fichte Studien
  • Roberta Picardi

Abstract A long section of The Doctrine of the State is devoted to determining what Fichte here defines as the two original human races, reformulating his earlier thesis of the original inequality between the Normalvolk and savages. This essay aims to clarify the scope and reasons for this reformulation. Against the backdrop of Fichte’s early involvement in the dispute between Herder and Kant regarding the origin of the human race and history (§1), it will be demonstrated that the dualism between Normalvolk and savages reflects Fichte’s speculative and ambivalent approach to reconciling the unity of the human race with physical and cultural differences: this approach rejects any fixed division while simultaneously justifying colonialism. In 1813, in the context of the uprising of French-occupied Prussia against Napoleon, Fichte reconsidered the relationship between the two original human races, polemically responding to Schlegel’s anti-Napoleonic attempt to justify the cultural superiority of German tribes by claiming their descent from ancient India. In contrast to this conservative nationalist view, Fichte advocates the primacy of the second and ‘savage’ human race, in order to lay the groundwork for his assertion of the primacy of the Germans, as destined to initiate a ‘new history’ by dissolving all hereditary social and political orders. However, this does not alter Fichte’s view of non-European savages as a ‘margin’ and ‘exception’ in the course of history.

Maas Kamlon’s Leadership: Resistance, Negotiation, and the Path to Establishing Mindanao State University
  • Mar 31, 2026
  • Southeastern Philippines Journal of Research and Development
  • Nelson Dino + 5 more

The historical resistance movements in the Sulu Archipelago represented a powerful event of transformative leadership during the pre-colonial period and through American colonialism, given that the Sulu Sultanate was a formidable maritime state. This research explores the multifaceted dynamics of resistance and negotiation in the context of Maas Kamlon, a visionary folk hero from Luuk, Sulu Archipelago, aiming to unveil the transformative pathways that culminate in an innovative agreement for the establishment of a new academic institution later named Mindanao State University. This paper employed a historical research of resistance and negotiations qualitatively from news reports, academic papers, and biopic films, including 11 in-depth interviews with family members and selected individuals, to investigate Maas Kamlon’s nature of resistance and negotiation strategies through transformative leadership. The research findings underline the historical roots of resistance in the Sulu Archipelago and the life of Maas Kamlon, including the timeline of events in which he initiated resistance and engaged in negotiations. Moreover, by employing Burns’ theory of leadership and Galtung’s theory of positive peace, the establishment of this academic institution symbolizes a transformative initiative to address systemic inequalities and expand educational opportunities for marginalized Muslim and IP communities. Ultimately, it is hoped that this research can serve as a means to incorporate historical events in the Philippines, particularly within history courses.

Rewriting the Rules: Game-based Learning for Affective and Cognitive Student Engagement in an Undergraduate History Course
  • Mar 11, 2026
  • International Journal of Role-Playing
  • Rachel Hoke + 1 more

Constructivist psychology has long demonstrated the potential for play to offer various benefits to learning. This study introduced active game-based learning experiences, in the form of role-playing games, into an undergraduate history course that also included passive lecture and discussion elements. Mixed methods student feedback surveys were used to examine the impacts of game-based learning on students’ affective and cognitive engagement in the course and offer a comparison between the lecture and game-based learning experiences. Qualitative data were analyzed through the paradigm of Mohsen, Abdollahi, and Omar’s (2019, 518-520) framework for educational value, including affective evaluation, conceptual understanding, skill development, and experiential learning. Students’ affective and cognitive engagement during game-based learning were consistently high. While students expressed a slight affective preference for lecture, their cognitive engagement was significantly higher during game-based learning, highlighting benefits beyond those offered by lecture. These results are situated within the context of the extant literature on game-based learning and student engagement and the need for continued exploration of beneficial connections between these constructs, specifically within the higher education classroom setting.

Russia as Civilization-State: New Methodological Projections in Representing the Course in Russian History
  • Mar 2, 2026
  • RUDN Journal of Russian History
  • Vardan E Bagdasaryan

The author substantiates the necessity of transitioning from the evolutionist-modernization paradigm to the civilizational approach in representing the course in Russian history, while correlating this shift with the state and societal demand for strengthening sovereignty and a unified identity. The methodological framework of the study is revealed through the comparison of the core content of the current course in history with the fundamental principles of civilizational theory and their logical projections onto Russian historical material. The author traces the formation of the civilizational discourse in contemporary Russia at the state level and its reflection in educational processes. The author also proposes a set of methodological recommendations related to the transition to examining Russian history through the prism of characterizing Russia as a civilization-state. Recommendations are provided for introducing corresponding adjustments in: the representation of state genesis, the identification of the driving forces of Russian history, historical periodization, assessment of reforms, the determination of the nature of social crises, explanation of external conflicts, and the role of ideology and identity systems. The practical result of the research lies in outlining guidelines for updating school and university courses in Russian history within the unified framework of a civilizational approach.

Integrating Oral History into University Curriculum Teaching: Constructing a New Educational Paradigm of “Community Memory Practice”
  • Feb 10, 2026
  • Education Reform and Development
  • Gaofu Xie + 1 more

Currently, higher education is actively advancing the construction of “New Liberal Arts” and emphasizing the concept of “practice-oriented education”. Against this background, how to organically integrate academic training, social care, and the cultivation of students’ comprehensive abilities in traditional history teaching have become a practical challenge. This study focuses on the reform of university oral history courses and proposes a “community memory practice” teaching model. This model deeply integrates the collection, interpretation, and inheritance of local historical memory into teaching, promoting the transformation of teaching from “knowledge transmission” to “literacy development” and “community participation”. Taking Zhaoqing, a national historical and cultural city, as the practice field, we guide students to conduct in-depth exploration of local history from dimensions such as spatial changes, the polysemy of events, and the living inheritance of intangible cultural heritage through oral history interviews and field investigations. Practice shows that this model not only helps cultivate students’ historical empathy, critical thinking, and field research capabilities but also promotes the transformation of academic achievements into public cultural products, achieving a win-win situation for education, practice, and services. This study aims to provide an operable and promotable teaching plan for the reform of oral history and related humanities courses in universities.

Utilization of Historical Sites in the City of Medan as a Resource for Learning Local History for UISU History Education Students
  • Jan 30, 2026
  • Riwayat: Educational Journal of History and Humanities
  • Surya Aymanda Nababan + 2 more

This study aims to examine the use of historical sites in the city of Medan as a source of learning local history for students of the History Education Study Program, the Islamic University of North Sumatra (UISU). The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the type of field research. The research subjects consist of students and lecturers teaching local history courses. Data collection was carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data was analyzed using an interactive model that included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn, and was tested for validity through triangulation of sources and techniques. The results of the study show that the use of historical sites in the city of Medan in learning local history has been carried out, but it has not been systematically integrated in lecture planning. Sites such as Maimun Palace, Al-Mashun Grand Mosque, Tjong A Fie Mansion, and the Kesawan area are used as contextual learning resources that can increase students' interest in learning, active engagement, and understanding of local history. Historical site-based learning also has a positive impact on the development of students' historical thinking skills and fosters awareness of the importance of preserving local cultural heritage. However, this study found several obstacles, including limited lecture time, the lack of optimal integration of field activities in the Semester Learning Plan, and the lack of academic guidance for historical site-based learning. This study recommends the need to develop an integrated and sustainable historical site-based local history learning model to improve the quality of history learning in higher education.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Ni-Co-W-Zr(P) Quinary Medium Entropy Alloy for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction
  • Jan 16, 2026
  • Solid State Phenomena
  • Megha Unni + 5 more

Over the course of history, the principles of alloying have evolved, with the past fifteen years witnessing the rise of high-entropy alloying theory, which has fundamentally transformed our approach to alloy design. Developing cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts is critical for large-scale hydrogen production via water splitting. The Ni-Co-W-Zr-P alloy coating offers a promising alternative to noble metal-based electrocatalysts. In this study, we developed a Co-W-Zr-incorporated Ni(P) coating using the electroless plating method. The integration of Co-W-Zr into the Ni(P) matrix notably enhances the number of active sites during the hydrogen evolution reaction. Electrochemical studies revealed a low overpotential of 413.5 mV of the coating when the current density is at −10 mA cm −2 . Kinetic parameters were analyzed using EIS measurements, and a potential mechanism for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was proposed. The coating demonstrated exceptional stability, with no surface degradation even after prolonged electrochemical testing, making it suitable for large or irregularly shaped electrodes required in industrial applications.

The transition to a market economy has led to widening differences in economic development between regions. Although tourism is linked to numerous other economic sectors, its development has not become a key priority for most regions of the Russian Federation. Unfavorable climatic and geographical conditions in specific regions have been cited as the main obstacles to tourism growth. The primary efforts to develop tourism in the country have been concentrated in a limited number of regions with more moderate climates and those possessing the most significant socio-cultural potential accumulated over the course of history. The economies of other regions, including the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (ROA), have focused on other sectors, such as industry and agriculture. This article examines methods for assessing the effectiveness of the functioning and development of a region’s tourism complex using the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania as an example. The current state and development trends of the tourism sector in the region are examined through analysis. By analyzing the tourism and recreational potential of North Ossetia-Alania, the key objectives and areas for increasing the region’s tourism potential are identified. Diagnostic and Surgical Challenges in Lacrimal Gland Pleomorphic Adenoma: A Case With Prolonged Ptosis and Acute Orbital Changes.
  • Jan 1, 2026
  • Case reports in medicine
  • Khayry Al-Shami + 6 more

Pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland is a rare benign tumor affecting the orbital area that is usually noninfectious and gradually progressive in nature with painless proptosis. We describe a case of a 37-year-old woman who presented with an unusual clinical course of ptotic history over five years with proptosis and superolateral orbital fullness emergent in the recent past. MRI showed that the mass originated in the lacrimal gland as a well-circumscribed and heterogeneous mass without bone erosion or intracranial expansion. Laboratory investigations were normal. A bone window lateral orbitotomy was performed on the patient, where the pseudocapsule was not breached, allowing the excision of the encapsulated tumor in its entirety. Pleomorphic adenoma was diagnosed by histopathological examination. Following surgery, the patient completely recovered with regard to ocular motility, proptosis resolution, and visual function. A seven-month follow-up showed the lesion fully resolved, and there was no sign of relapse. This case demonstrates the significance of the ability to identify abnormal manifestations of lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenoma and underlines its total resection as a method to avoid recurrence and malignant conversion. Surveillance over a long period is essential because it is possible that, after treatment several years ago, recurrence can take place.

Sound Experiments in Italian Futurism
  • Jan 1, 2026
  • Культура и искусство
  • Artur Andreevich Furmanov

The subject of this research is the sound experiments within Italian Futurism – one of the most radical artistic phenomena of the early 20th century. A key figure of this movement is Luigi Russolo, and the central document defining its aesthetics is his 1913 manifesto, "The Art of Noises." The focus of the work is a comprehensive analysis of the theory and practice behind the creation and use of noise instruments (intonarumori) constructed by Russolo. The article examines in detail their unique design features, sound production principles, and the revolutionary-for-its-time sonic aesthetics aimed at incorporating industrial and everyday noises into the realm of musical art. The study situates the phenomenon of the "art of noises" within the broad historical and cultural context of the era, tracing its connections to the manifestos of F.T. Marinetti, Futurist painting, and the avant-garde's general aspiration for a total renewal of artistic language. The research is based on historical-cultural and analytical approaches. It is built on the analysis of primary sources – the manifestos of Luigi Russolo and Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, as well as materials from the early 20th century periodical press. The method of comparative analysis is used to identify the interrelationships between various art forms (poetry, painting, music) within the Futurist movement. The novelty of the research lies in a comprehensive examination of the "art of noises" phenomenon as a synthetic project at the intersection of music, technology, visual art, and performance practices. The work emphasizes not only the historical role of Russolo but also the practical implementation of his ideas and their specific influence on the subsequent course of musical history. Russolo's sound experiments were not a passing episode in art history but represented a consistent and deeply conceived attempt to renew musical language to make it adequate for the technological age. Despite the loss of the original instruments, Russolo's conceptual contribution – the legitimization of noise as artistic material, the invention of new instruments and principles of notation—has proven its viability and exerted a long-term impact on the development of avant-garde and electronic music.

The article examines the religious views of Kazakh enlighteners of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries – Chokan Valikhanov, Ibrai Altynsarin, Abai Kunanbayev, Shakarim Kudaiberdiev, Alikhan Bukeikhanov, Akhmet Baitursynov, and Mirzhakyp Dulatov. The aim of the study is to identify the specific features of their attitudes toward religion and to determine the role of religious views in shaping public consciousness and Kazakh national identity amid socio-political transformations. The methodological framework is based on historical-comparative, cultural, and analytical approaches. The findings show that most enlighteners regarded religion as an essential component of the spiritual life of the people, contributing to the preservation of moral values and social stability. At the same time, they criticized religious fanaticism, superstition, and dogmatism, emphasizing the need to integrate faith with enlightenment, science, and cultural progress. In particular, Valikhanov advocated a rational understanding of religion; Altynsarin emphasized its educational function; Abai and Shakarim sought moral renewal through religious-philosophical reflection; whereas Bukeikhanov, Baitursynov, and Dulatov viewed religious values as a foundation in the struggle for national revival. The novelty of the article lies in a comprehensive comparative analysis of the religious ideas of Kazakh intellectuals, revealing the contradictory yet productive interaction between tradition and modernization. The practical significance of the study consists in the applicability of its results to academic courses in history, philosophy, and religious studies, as well as to understanding the evolution of spiritual values in Kazakh society.

  • Seval Bircan Yılmaz Yıldız + 1 more

This opinion paper discusses artificial intelligence (AI) within the historical course of theories of learning and the intersections of pedagogy, technology, and policy. Building on the legacy of behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, and critical pedagogy, AI is interrogated not only as a technical tool but also as a transformative force that conceptualizes of educational thought. Starting with a vignette invites readers to analytically question whether AI represents a continuity of earlier patterns or a paradigmatic disagreement, and whether it positions learners as empowered mediators or as datafied objects within algorithmic systems. The study highlights that the future of learning depends on balancing two forces: the historical needs of education and the new technical possibilities created by AI. It argues that AI’s strengths—such as personalization, adaptability, and creativity—should be combined with education’s long-term commitments to equity, diversity, and democracy. The contribution lies in incorporating theoretical reflection with narrative pedagogy, offering a background for educators to involve with AI not merely as a technical phenomenon but as a socio-political and epistemological challenge restructuring education in the 21st century.

The Origin of Morality and the Making of the Moral Predicament
  • Dec 31, 2025
  • Ethical Review of Social Sciences
  • Gennady Shkliarevsky

Moral dimension is a characteristic feature of most transformative developments that have occurred in the course of human history. Moral outrage has fuelled numerous upheavals, uprisings, and revolutions. Researchers have recognized the important role of moral outrage during periods of social and political change. However, they usually tend to explain it by social, political, or economic factors. They rarely trace this phenomenon to purely moral factors. This article argues that the primary source of moral outrage lies in the moral sphere – specifically, in the discrepancy between the widely recognized moral principles and the actual practice. The imperative of equality is arguably the most important and fundamental principle that underpins the existence of morality. The appeal of the imperative of equality transcends temporal and cultural boundaries. Yet despite this broad appeal, our social practice accepts, tolerates, and perpetuates inequality. This article calls this discrepancy the moral predicament. The article will analyse the factors that are involved in the making of the moral predicament. It will identify the source of the imperative of equality and will explain why this imperative has not been realized in practice. The article will also consider several relevant issues, such as the rise of consciousness and morality. Finally, the article will offer a perspective on how the problem of the moral predicament can be solved.
