High costs could reduce the number of qualified perfusionists, negatively impacting patient care. To address these challenges, partnerships between academic institutions and healthcare organizations could facilitate the development of scholarships or sponsored work studies. Additionally, policymakers should advocate for increased funding and other initiatives to help alleviate the financial strain allied health professionals face. Creating innovative solutions to these financial challenges may lead to a more diverse group of professionals in the field, enriching perspectives and approaches in patient care. Socio-economic contextual determinants and behavioral changes during pregnancy: evidence from the "MAMI-MED" cohort

BackgroundPregnancy is a period marked by significant physiological and psychological changes in women and increased fetal nutritional requirements, necessitating maternal adaptation and behavior modifications. Clinicians and health institutions recommend pregnant women engage in healthy practices, such as smoking and alcohol cessation, folic acid consumption, vaccinations, and the like. As behavioral changes in general, the individual's conduct during pregnancy is also influenced not only by personal socio-economic status but also by the socio-economic conditions of the individual's area of residence. This mechanism is recognized by the social epidemiological approach and relates to the concept of neighborhood effect on individual health-related choices. Leveraging such considerations, the work aims to explore the association between selected behaviors recommended by clinicians during pregnancy and specific contextual variables in the residential areas where pregnant women live.MethodsData from the "MAMI-MED" cohort, recruiting pregnant women during the first prenatal visit at a hospital in Catania (Italy), were analyzed. The cohort provides a valuable resource for investigating the relationship between various exposures during pregnancy and the health outcomes of both mothers and infants. Geocoding techniques were employed to link individual-level data to selected contextual variables related to education, income, unemployment, and housing costs in the participants' residential areas. Mann–Whitney test, Kruskal–Wallis tests, logistic regressions and mixtures of regressions models with concomitant variables are implemented 1) to investigate the associations between contextual covariates and individual responses, 2) to assess the presence of latent sub-groups of the population reacting differently to the same contextual factors.ResultsThe results of Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests, and logistic regressions indicated that neighborhood's socio-economic characteristics, such as educational level and unemployment rate, are associated with women's behaviors during pregnancy, smoking cessation in particular. Results from the logistic regression for BMI showed that obese and overweight individuals tend to live in neighborhoods where the percentage of individuals holding at least a bachelor's degree is comparatively lower. A mixture of regressions predicting individual BMI detected the presence of two latent groups in the population under analysis. The main finding seems to suggest that people living in worse socio-economic environments have a higher sensitivity to changes in education conditions, with respect to individuals living in better-off neighborhoods.ConclusionsThese findings highlight the importance of considering social and contextual dimensions in understanding and promoting healthy behaviors during pregnancy.

Quality of Service and Customer Satisfaction from ROI in Pesantren: A BPS-Mediated Study

This study examines the effect of service quality and customer satisfaction on return on investment (ROI) in Pesantren (Islamic Boarding Schools) through the Education Cost of Students (BPS). Previous studies have shown that service quality and customer satisfaction are important factors that influence financial performance in educational institutions. This study seeks to answer whether these variables significantly affect ROI in Islamic boarding schools. This study hypothesizes that higher service quality and customer satisfaction lead to better ROI in Islamic boarding schools. A quantitative approach was used, using simple and multiple linear regression analysis on data from 260 respondents, with data analyzed using SPSS version 26. The results show that the quality of educational services and customer satisfaction significantly impact ROI. Each variable contributes independently and collectively to improving financial results. This finding suggests prioritizing service quality standards and customer satisfaction is a surefire strategy to improve ROI in Islamic boarding schools. This study recommends that Islamic boarding school managers improve their digital service quality standards to achieve better financial performance and maintain the sustainability of their educational institution operations. This study contributes to developing educational management through digital service applications to improve educational services' competitiveness.

Analyzing Inflation and its Effects on Household Economic Situation: A Case Study of Mitengo Ndola

The purpose of this study was to investigate inflation and its effects on household situation in Mitengo, Ndola. The study made use of a cross section survey allowing for qualitative statistical analysis. A structured questionnaire consisting of closed-ended questions was used to collect primary data. Regression analysis was used to establish associations between variables. The average monthly income was K10,500 (SD = K4,572.73), with household expenditure averaging K5,611.29 (SD = K4,753.43). Food expenditure consumed 32.36% of income, while transportation, education, and healthcare costs accounted for 13.39%, 13.61%, and 6.85% respectively. Housing and utility expenses averaged 9.74% and 11.89%. Inflation significantly impacted consumption, with 41.9% of participants reporting considerable effects and 58.1% experiencing extreme effects. Participants frequently adjusted their budgets, and a statistically significant relationship was found between inflation perception and budgeting adjustments (Chi-Square = 14.090, p = 0.000). Determinants such as income strata, labor market participation, and household demographics also influenced consumption, with disposable income and net worth varying significantly among participants. These findings underscored the profound impact of inflation on household financial behaviors. To mitigate the impact of inflation on household consumption, it is crucial to enhance financial literacy programs, promote income diversification, and stabilize inflation through effective policies. Targeted support for lower-income households, such as social safety nets and subsidies for essential goods, can alleviate the financial strain. Encouraging savings, prioritizing essential expenditures, and offering inflation-indexed financial products will help households manage their finances better.

Investment and Inequality in Pakistan's Education Sector

In this paper we present arguments for increasing expenditure on the education sector. We show that there exist large inequalities in the distribution of education services across regions and across genders so that ensuring equal opportunity for all in education, either for normative or economic reasons, will require large additional investments in this sector. We also present evidence which shows that while the rate of return to education in the country may not be high it has been increasing over time, so that higher expenditure on the education sector is also economically justifiable. Enrollments at all levels have been increasing over time, along with household and institutional expenditure on the education sector, which suggests a greater willingness to invest in education. If the productivity of education is low then it would be natural to expect a decline over time in the willingness of the people and the government to bear t he costs of education. But first, we examine the evidence about the increasing unemployment of educated labour and show that this does not mean that there is an economic surplus of education in the country, nor that the education sector is overextended, but that it can be explained by 'search time'.

LOW ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF FEMALE STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA

This study examined the low performance of female students in tertiary institutions in Nasarawa State. The study employed descriptive survey research, where the sample size of 373 from the population of 12,301 female students and cluster population were drawn, respectively. Two self-designed instrument stages: Challenges of Female Students in Tertiary Educational Institutions Questionnaire (CFSTEIQ) and Factors Causes Low Performance of Female Students in Tertiary Institutions Questionnaire (FCLEMFSTIQ) were used for this study. The instruments were validated by experts based on face and content validities. The reliability indices of 0.82 and 0.75 were obtained respectively. However, eight out of ten were rated as significant challenges. The findings of the study revealed that female students in tertiary institutions in Nasarawa State are faced with challenges of inadequate accommodation. Also, low incomes, lack of proper counseling, inadequate toilet and sanitation facilities, and an un-conducive learning environment among others formed part of the challenges. The study further revealed that widespread poverty, fear of profound negative change of female students by parents, high cost of education, and socio-cultural beliefs are some of the causes of low performance of female students. The study recommended among others that, there should be financial aid programs for females at higher educational institutions to improve their performance, there should be a conducive learning environment for female students, adequate and appropriate facilities should be provided; and there should be a rigorous campaign against religious misinterpretations to enhance the credibility of gender norms and change perceptions and attitudes of people towards females’ education.

Student Educational Loans and Life-Stage Milestones

The cost of college education increased by 25 percent since 2008 while student debt increased by over 100 percent for the same period and stands at $1.727 trillion representing over nine percent of household debt. This paper uses a survey to assess the impact of student loans on major life-defining decisions by students in a private university. The results indicate that educational loans have negative effects on savings for retirement, wealth creation, career choices, and life milestones like homeownership and starting a family. Moreover, the financial burden of the loans leads to stress and anxiety about future financial stability.

Global research aims for the study of cost and value in health professions education: A Delphi study of international experts

Background Health professions educators constantly make difficult choices about the allocation of finite resources. However, there is limited sound research available to guide their decision-making. The purpose of this study was to address this gap by establishing international consensus on research aims, considering diverse economic and cultural contexts. Methods The authors conducted a three-round Delphi study, engaging an international panel of 73 experts in education research. Panelists were asked to identify (round 1), rank (round 2), and revise (round 3) research aims important for the study of cost and value in medical education. Round 3 results were discussed by an international steering group of nine medical education scientists actively involved in cost and value research, who finalized a list of 20 research aims. Steering group narratives were analyzed to identify additional conceptual insights. Results From 597 research aims suggested in round 1, 20 research aims were identified after steering group discussion. These were clustered into three categories: (1) funding mechanisms for medical education (e.g. financial policies, cost-effectiveness, and equity impacts); (2) cost and outcomes, e.g. how costs in health professions education relate to concrete outcomes; and (3) economic evaluation of teaching, assessment, and training approaches; e.g. designing and applying formal economic evaluation methods. Steering group discussions noted the limited integration of economic theories into medical education research and the need for foundational studies beyond immediate, practical priorities. They further noted lack of consensus on definitions of cost and value, and appropriate methodologies; underutilization of accepted health economics approaches; and infrequent interdisciplinary collaborations. These collectively act as barriers to advancing the field. Conclusion The field of cost and value in health professions education remains theoretically and empirically underdeveloped. The research aims identified herein provide a strategic framework for addressing cost and value comprehensively.

By analysing student experiences and statistical trends, this research presents evidence-based recommendations for achieving balance between work and studies, promoting academic integrity and mental health. Ultimately, this comprehensive investigation seeks to inform policies and support systems that enhance student success in both academic and professional realms.

Challenges and Strategies for Increasing the Popularity of Integrated Islamic Elementary Schools in Jambi Province

The emergence of Integrated Islamic Primary Schools (SDIT) in Indonesia has raised concerns regarding the orientation of Islamic education that is trapped between ideological idealism and market pragmatism. This study aims to describe the challenges and strategies faced by market-oriented SDITs in increasing their popularity. Using a qualitative approach with observation, interview and documentation techniques, this research involved principals, teachers, students and parents. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, which included collection, presentation, reduction and conclusion drawing. The findings show the main challenges include competition with public schools, curriculum balance, education costs and parents' expectations. Strategies implemented include developing an integrated curriculum, improving the quality of teachers, developing facilities and actively involving parents. This research provides insights into the dynamics of SDIT and offers strategies to overcome challenges in a competitive education market.

Do Educational Expenditures Influence The Relative Gap Of Monetary Poverty Among Households In Benin?

This article analyzes the effect of educational expenditures on the relative monetary poverty gap of Beninese households, measured as the distance between their standard of living and the poverty line. Using a Fractional Regression Model (FRM) and robustness checks via a Generalized Linear Model (GLM), the study draws on data from the Harmonized Survey on Household Living Conditions (EHCVM 2022) to examine educational spending, as well as socioeconomic and cultural factors influencing the relative monetary poverty gap among households burdened by education costs. The results indicate that households’ education expenditures in private schools/universities or mixed institutions (both private and public), the ratio of enrolled children to household size, and economic shocks positively affect their relative monetary poverty gap. The challenge for policymakers is thus to strike a balance between mitigating the immediate financial burden of education on vulnerable households and ensuring broad, equitable access to education to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

The benefits of memory control processes in working memory: Comparing effects of self-reported and instructed strategy use.

Working memory performance is often assumed to benefit from different maintenance control strategies such as rehearsal, refreshing, elaboration, and grouping. In studies assessing strategy self-reports, some strategies were indeed associated with better recall. Nevertheless, experimental studies assessing the effect of instructing maintenance strategies compared to a no-instruction baseline lend no evidence for the effectiveness of these strategies for working memory. Explanations for this contradiction could be that instruction implementation engenders dual-task costs or that strategy instructions reduce adaptive strategy switching. Across two experiments, we investigated the frequency and variability of strategy use with trial-wise self-reports in serial recall of word lists. Furthermore, we examined potential instruction costs by comparing performance in trials with self-reported versus instructed use of the same strategies. Self-reported strategy use varied from trial to trial, with elaboration and rehearsal being the most frequent. Self-reported elaboration was correlated with better performance than reading and rehearsal. For the most prevalent strategies-elaboration and rehearsal-there were no costs of instructed strategy implementation. Impacts of student debt on the professional and personal lives of genetic counselors: A 10-year perspective.

The financial landscape for those entering the genetic counseling profession has shifted significantly regarding salaries and educational costs since the 2014 study by Kuhl etal. Limited information is available regarding whether and how educational costs and student debt impacts have changed over time for genetic counselors. An updated web-based survey of 317 recent genetic counseling program graduates was conducted to address this gap. Overall, educational costs, total debt, and salaries showed increases from the prior study, and many factors measuring the impact of genetic counseling graduate student debt showed little to no change. Ninety-six percent (n = 222/232) of respondents still reported feeling burdened by their student debt, and 45% (n = 105/232) reported experiencing more hardship than anticipated, though most respondents were once again satisfied with their genetic counseling education. Student debt influenced many lifestyle choices to a strikingly similar degree, and a large majority still said that this debt did not change their career path post-graduation. Several factors did not significantly impact reported hardship, including having received financial help from family members or financial counseling before starting a genetic counseling program. Total debt and starting salaries had medians of $50,000 to $75,000 and $70,000 to $75,000, respectively, again exceeding expert recommendations that student debt payments do not surpass 10% of the borrower's projected gross monthly income. These results suggest ongoing burden and hardship caused by student debt and similar impacts on professional and personal life choices compared to a decade ago. In response to these ongoing issues, we suggest ways to alleviate this burden and increase financial transparency and access to the profession for future cohorts.

Analysis of financial strategies and needs of international students studying at universities in the Saratov region: a sociological analysis

The article examines the financial strategies and needs of foreign students studying at universities in the Saratov region in 2024. The issue of economic adaptation for international students is increasingly relevant as the number of foreign students grows. The purpose of the study is to explore how students manage their budgets under limited financial resources and how they allocate funds across key expense categories. The article analyzes the theoretical background of the socio-economic adaptation of students, drawing on the work of leading researchers. Empirical data were collected through a survey method, with a sample of 200 foreign students studying at universities in the Saratov region. The key expense categories include education, housing, food, transport, communication services, and unexpected costs. Statistical and comparative methods were used for data analysis. The findings indicate that most students combine part-time work with their studies and receive financial support from relatives, but they are forced to economize in various budget areas. Only a small proportion of students (up to 5%) experience serious financial difficulties. The results may be useful for developing support strategies for foreign students facing social-economic adaptation challenges.

The successful creation of interactive learning environments (ILE) in the field of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) relies significantly on effective design. Designing these environments involves input from a variety of experts, necessitating collaboration among individuals developing tools to tackle design challenges from various viewpoints. This article seeks to comprehensively analyze recent research that explores diverse approaches to improve technology-driven learning environments. The objective is to evaluate how well these approaches are practically applied to fulfill the instructional potential they promise. The analysis is clearly grounded on empirical research published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals, with a focus on the use of diverse methodologies in educational contexts. The design-based research methodology has demonstrated its effectiveness in the last ten years in both the design and research aspects of technology-enhanced learning environments (TELEs). In addition to defining and characterizing design-based research, this essay emphasizes its significance for the advancement of TELEs. It offers guidelines for integrating design-based research into TELEs and discusses the difficulties that come with using this approach. The distribution of time, a crucial resource in the educational system, has changed as a result of the adoption of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) methods, impacting both teachers and students. Although technology-enhanced learning (TEL) has the potential to improve efficiency and personalization, its impact on teacher time must be carefully considered. Implementing TEL techniques may result in higher expenses without corresponding benefits if not carefully thought out. This study evaluates various ways for evaluating the costs of instruction between traditional methods and technology-enhanced learning (TEL). The approach starts with strategic choices that are intended to maximize the benefits of Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL), provide guidance for determining likely necessary expenses, and outline the underlying "benefits-oriented cost model." With this method, innovators can more effectively plan ahead and comprehend the dynamic relationship between expected learning outcomes and possible teaching costs. Five technology-enhanced learning approaches are evaluated in-depth in this study: gamified learning platforms, virtual reality classrooms, interactive online courses, personalized learning artificial intelligence, and collaborative social learning. The approaches were examined, contrasted, and graded according to eight criteria: cost, accessibility, engagement, learning effectiveness, adaptability, skill transfer, user experience, and data privacy. The quality in relation to the best-performing method (Qj), ranking order (Rj), and overall performance (Sj) were all determined values. Collaborative Social Learning took second place, while Personalized Learning AI emerged as the best approach with outstanding quality. The results provide insightful information that will help educators and decision-makers decide which technology-enhanced learning strategy is best for their particular set of goals and priorities in education.

Exploring Gender-Specific Spatial Dynamics in Philippine Higher-Education Classrooms

Over the past 50 years, higher education in the Philippines has seen many changes, from gender mainstreaming in policymaking to improving room setups and teaching methods. While governing bodies establish standards on school design, it mostly satisfies the physiological and safety needs of the student. Hence, despite the advancements from the changes, issues like the reversal of the gender gap and rising costs in higher education have emerged. These issues are mostly addressed separately due to the limited research intersecting gender, and architecture, specifically the basic spaces in higher education-built environment. The main objective of this exploratory study is to research the gender and space dynamics in higher education-built environments in the Philippines. Data were collected through an exploratory approach, beginning with semi-structured interviews and generalized using ANOVA and frequency on the survey result. The analysis revealed that males are much more comfortable than females in occupying space and that they have preconceived notions on how to situate themselves in a room, whereas females situate themselves based on the information they have gathered in the room. Furthermore, the study revealed that a more apparent spatial placement develops when the category expands from sex to gender-specific which affects design consideration factors such as sightlines and proxemics. For instance, males tend to sit on the edge and towards the back of the room, females tend to sit in the middle and towards the front, and gay tends to occupy the centre of the room. The findings suggest that sex, as a categorical variable, highlights biological differences in design requirements. However, gender, in the social context, disrupts stereotypes, as expressions and preferences may not align with norms. Therefore, design should consider these dimensional differences and varying expectations to develop a learning environment that supports users' psychological safety and enhances learning capacity.

The Impact of Doctor of Nursing Practice Education on Career Advancement and Professional Satisfaction: A Scoping Review.

To explore the impact of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) education on career advancement, job satisfaction, leadership competencies and contributions to healthcare systems. The study utilised a scoping review methodology based on Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) framework. The search strategy was developed with an academic librarian to ensure thoroughness and relevance. Seven databases were searched using MesH terms. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed studies examining DNP education's influence on career advancement, job satisfaction and leadership. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns and themes. Studies were selected based on their focus on DNP-prepared nurses, nursing faculty or advanced practice nursing students in healthcare or academic settings, published between 2004 and 2024. Twenty-one studies met the inclusion criteria, highlighting DNP education's role in fostering leadership, professional development and evidence-based practice. Thematic analysis revealed the benefits of being a DNP graduate include contribution to professional development, contribution to leadership and contribution to the practice environment. The challenges to DNP graduates include underrecognition of competencies, high educational costs and limited academic opportunities that were also identified. DNP education contributes to individual and professional growth, leadership development and healthcare system improvements. However, barriers such as financial constraints and inadequate recognition of DNP competencies must be addressed to maximise the impact of this educational model. DNP education empowers nurses to lead healthcare innovations, enhance patient care quality and reduce disparities in health outcomes. Strengthening financial and systemic support for DNP graduates is essential for sustaining these contributions. DNP education is a transformative force in nursing, offering significant opportunities for leadership development and healthcare advancements. Aligning DNP programmes with evolving global healthcare challenges can further strengthen their impact on the profession and patient care. PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed.

Adoption of solar-powered pumps in agriculture: insights from smallholders in Burkina Faso

Irrigation plays a critical role in agricultural intensification and productivity enhancement, especially in rainfall-scarce environments. Solar pumps have emerged as promising solutions for controlling energy consumption. This study examines the factors influencing the adoption of solar-powered irrigation pumps among horticultural farmers in the Kadiogo Province, located in the Centre Region in Burkina Faso, a landlocked Sahelian country within West Africa. Within the framework of a solar pump subsidy program, a random sample of 200 farmers, including 42% of adopters and 58% of non-adopters of solar pumps for irrigation. A logit model revealed that factors such as gender, membership in rural organizations, farm size, agricultural income and perceived ease of manutention significantly affect the likelihood of adopting solar pumps. Additionally, level of education and purchase cost also influence adoption probabilities. These findings suggest that targeted interventions, focusing on enhanced educational outreach, subsidization of purchase costs and support of rural organizations could trigger widespread adoption of solar-powered pumps in smallholder communities, thereby improving agricultural productivity and resilience in small-scale farming communities.
