Constructed wetland mesocosms improve the biodegradation of microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin by indigenous bacterial consortia

Cyanobacterial blooms releasing harmful cyanotoxins, such as microcystin (MC) and cylindrospermopsin (CYN), are prominent threats to human and animal health. Constructed wetlands (CW) may be a nature-based solution for bioremediation of lake surface water containing cyanotoxins, due to its low-cost requirement of infrastructure and environmentally friendly operation. There is recent evidence that microcystin-LR (MC-LR) can efficiently be removed in CW microcosms where CYN degradation in CW is unknown. Likewise, the mechanistic background regarding cyanotoxins transformation in CW is not yet elucidated. In the present study, the objective was to compare MC-LR and CYN degradation efficiencies by two similar microbial communities obtained from CW mesocosms, by two different experiments setup: 1) in vitro batch experiment in serum bottles with an introduced CW community, and 2) degradation in CW mesocosms. In experiment 1) MC-LR and CYN were spiked at 100 µg L−1 and in experiment 2) 200 µg L−1 were spiked. Results showed that MC-LR was degraded to ≤1 µg L−1 within seven days in both experiments. However, with a markedly higher degradation rate constant in the CW mesocosms (0.18 day−1 and 0.75 day−1, respectively). No CYN removal was detected in the in vitro incubations, whereas around 50 % of the spiked CYN was removed in the CW mesocosms. The microbial community responded markedly to the cyanotoxin treatment, with the most prominent increase of bacteria affiliated with Methylophilaceae (order: Methylophilales, phylum: Proteobacteria). The results strongly indicate that CWs can develop an active microbial community capable of efficient removal of MC-LR and CYN. However, the CW operational conditions need to be optimized to achieve a full CYN degradation. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report the ability of CW mesocosms to degrade CYN.

Study on the performance of vertical flow constructed wetland microcosm with Canna sps. for treatment of high chromium-containing wastewater

Chromium (Cr (VI)) pollution has plagued the environment due to chromite mining and various industrial actions. Constructed wetlands (CW) have emerged as a potential wastewater management technique that utilizes physical, chemical, and biological processes. The present study investigates the use of vertical flow-constructed wetlands (CW) using manure-rich garden soil and sand as substrates in planted CW (CW–P) and unplanted CW (CW-UP) to remove Cr (VI) from simulated wastewater. The experiment was performed in two phases, i.e., Phase I and II, in the same system. In Phase I, initial Cr (VI) concentrations were varied between 5 and 200 mg/l at a fixed hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 48 h, while in Phase II, the effect of HRT (24 h, 48 h, and 96 h) was studied at a fixed Cr (VI) concentration of 200 mg/L in the influent. At 24 h, HRT removal efficiencies were 90.20% for CW-P and 86.41% for CW-UP. However, at 96 h of HRT, the system showed nearly the same removal efficiency. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersion X-Ray spectroscopy analysis suggested the conversion of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) in soil precipitate and the translocation of Cr (VI) in plant tissues (Canna sps.). Moreover, microbial diversity profiling indicated that microbial diversity involved in pollutant removal differed in both systems. The phytotoxicity test clearly showed the decrease in toxicity level in the treated effluent, concluding the reusability of treated water. This exploratory study suggested that the CW can potentially remove a higher concentration of hexavalent chromium at longer HRT.

Novel Chitosan-FeS@biochar-added constructed wetland microcosms for NH4+/NO3- and Pb removal: Performance and mechanism

Biochar has been proven to be efficient for enhancing purifying performance, however, studies on nitrogen (N) removal pathways and microbial community structure is far insufficient in modified-biochar-added constructed wetlands (CWs) for treating N and heavy metals co-existing wastewater. Therefore, the composite of Chitosan-FeS @ peanut shell biochar (CFP) was applied in CWs to assess its performance for treating N and Pb co-existing wastewater and investigate N removal pathways. It showed that adding CFP enhanced the nitrification and denitrification intensity and increased removal rates of NO3-, NH4+ and TN by 76.32%, 28.41% and 52.48% respectively, in CWs. CFP not only functioned as electron donor to drive denitrification but also increased the relative abundance of Thiobacillus, Sulfurimonas and Geobacter, thereby promoting N removal. Furthermore, CFP alleviated Pb stress on Acorus calamus L.Therefore, this study provides a promising and feasible strategy for treating N and Pb co-existing wastewater in CWs.

Enhanced nitrogen removal via biochar-mediated nitrification, denitrification, and electron transfer in constructed wetland microcosms.

This study investigated the effect of biochar on real domestic wastewater treatment by constructed wetlands (CWs). To evaluate the role of biochar as a substrate and electron transfer medium on nitrogen transformation, three treatments of CW microcosms were established: conventional substrate (T1), biochar substrate (T2), and biochar-mediated electron transfer (T3). Nitrogen removal increased from 74% in T1 to 77.4% in T2 and 82.1% in T3. Nitrate generation increased in T2 (up to 2 mg/L) but decreased in T3 (lower than 0.8 mg/L), and the nitrification genes (amoA, Hao, and nxrA) in T2 and T3 increased by 132-164% and 129-217%, respectively, compared with T1 (1.56 × 104- 2.34 × 107 copies/g). The nitrifying Nitrosomonas, denitrifying Dechloromonas, and denitrification genes (narL, nirK, norC, and nosZ) in the anode and cathode of T3 were significantly higher than those of the other treatments (increased by 60-fold, 35-fold, and 19-38%). The genus Geobacter, related to electron transfer, increased in T3 (by 48-fold), and stable voltage (~150 mV) and power density (~9 uW/m2) were achieved. These results highlight the biochar-mediated enhancement of nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands via nitrification, denitrification, and electron transfer, and provide a promising approach for enhanced nitrogen removal by constructed wetland technology.

Optimal root oxygen release from two macrophytes Saururus cernuus L. and Pistia stratiotes L. varies with light and temperature in simulated constructed wetlands microcosms

Different environmental factors influence photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance, and oxygen released from macrophytes' roots. We measured several physiological parameters of Saururus cernuus L. (Lizard's Tail) and Pistia stratiotes L. (Water Cabbage) by exposing the plants to various controlled environmental conditions. The oxygen released from the plant roots was also used to treat the chemical and biological oxygen demand in wastewater in microcosms. This work determined that photosynthetic rate and oxygen release were dependent not only on the plant species but also on the light intensity exposed. The highest rate of photosynthesis differed considerably between the two plants, as S. cernuus required more light intensity than P. stratiotes. Maximum root oxygen release was at peak photosynthesis, thus correlated with light intensity. The temperature had an effect on stomatal conductance, photosynthesis rate, and transpiration rate was affected by the wind speed. For the highest stomatal conductance and photosynthesis, P. stratiotes required a higher temperature than S. cernuus. Stomatal conductance also influenced the oxygen released from plant roots. Furthermore, a relationship was determined between physiological processes and their potential to release oxygen from the roots where the reduction in COD and BOD measured at the end of the experiment was largely attributed to the oxygen that the macrophytes added to the substrate through their roots. The results of this study provide a good benchmark for plant scientists to predict the physiological processes of plants in response to different environmental conditions to control the negative impacts of harsh environmental conditions on plants' ability to release oxygen in their rhizosphere and to improve the efficiency of CW.

Plant and microbial communities responded to copper and/or tetracyclines in mycorrhizal enhanced vertical flow constructed wetlands microcosms with Canna indica L.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a significant role in pollutants removal in constructed wetlands (CWs). However, the purification effects of AMF on combined copper (Cu) and tetracycline (TC) pollution in CWs remains unknown. This study investigated the growth, physiological characteristics and AMF colonization of Canna indica L. living in vertical flow CWs (VFCWs) treated for Cu and/or TC pollution, the purification effects of AMF enhanced VFCWs on Cu and TC, and the microbial community structures. The results showed that (1) Cu and TC inhibited plant growth and decreased AMF colonization; (2) the removal rates of TC and Cu by VFCWs were 99.13–99.80% and 93.17–99.64%, respectively; (3) the growth, Cu and TC uptakes of C. indica and Cu removal rates were enhanced by AMF inoculation; (4) TC and Cu stresses reduced and AMF inoculation increased bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the VFCWs, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Acidobacteria were the dominant bacteria, and AMF inoculation decreased the relative abundance of Novosphingobium and Cupriavidus. Therefore, AMF could enhance the pollutants purification in VFCWs by promoting plant growth and altering the microbial community structures.

Removing chemical and biological pollutants from swine wastewater through constructed wetlands aiming reclaimed water reuse

Reusing reclaimed wastewater is needed to fight water scarcity, reduce freshwater consumption and conserve water resources, but one must ensure that hazardous substances are fully removed/eliminate before that reuse. The potential of lab-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) for the removal of chemical and biological contaminants from livestock wastewater, while maintaining nutrient levels for fertilization, was assessed, evaluating changes in microbial communities, with particular focus on potential pathogens. CW microcosms with two different substrates (lava rock or light expanded clay aggregate), both planted with Phragmites australis, were tested. After 15 days of treatment, removal rates were higher than 80% for Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn, in general with no significant differences between the two different substrates. Organic matter and nutrients were also removed but their levels still allowed the used of the treated wastewater as a fertilizer Removal of bacterial contamination was estimated through enumeration of cultivable bacteria. High removal rates of fecal indicator bacteria were observed, reaching >95% for enterococci and >98% for enterobacteria after 15 days of treatment, decreasing hazardous biological contaminants initially present in the wastewater. In addition, the microbial communities in the initial and treated wastewater, and in the plant roots bed substrate, were characterized by using 16SrRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Microbial communities in the CW systems showed a clear shift comparatively with the initial wastewater showing system adaptation and removal potentialities. This also revealed an important removal of the most represented potential pathogenic genus, Clostridium, which relative abundance decreased from 33% to 1% through the treatment. Overall, CWs showed potential to be efficient in removing chemical and biological contaminants, while maintaining moderated levels of nutrients, allowing the reuse of reclaimed water in agriculture, namely as fertilizer. Current results will contribute for the optimization and use of CWs for a sustainable treatment of liquid wastes, promoting the circular economy.

Assembling plant diversity mitigates greenhouse gas emissions and achieves high nitrogen removal when treating the low-C/N wastewater by constructed wetlands.

The low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio in wastewater will inhibit pollutant removal, and more seriously, it will cause an increment of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions of constructed wetlands (CWs). Raising the C/N ratio of wastewater is an effective way to solve this problem, while it may cause secondary pollution and is costly. Assembling plant diversity promotes N removal, while the effects of plant diversity and increasing C/N ratio on global warming potential (GWP) combined by N2O and methane (CH4) are lack of comparison. In this study, 108 CW microcosms were established to explore the effects of increasing the C/N ratio from 1 to 5 and assembling plant diversity on N removal and GHG emissions. Results showed that when the C/N ratio was 1, (1) increasing species richness reduced N2O and CH4 emissions then reduced the GWP by 70%; (2) the presence of Arundo donax in microcosms reduced GWP by 72%; (3) an A. donax × Tradescantia fluminensis × Reineckia carnea mixture resulted in a high N removal and decreased the GWP per g N removal by 92% with a cost increment of 0.05 USD per m3 wastewater treated; and (4) as the C/N ratio increasing to 5, the GWP per g N removal of monocultures was reduced by 96%, but the cost increased by at least 0.29 USD per m3 wastewater treated. In summary, configuring plant diversity in CWs is an efficient, clean, and cost-effective measure to treat wastewater with a low C/N ratio.

Influence of iron species on the simultaneous nitrate and sulfate removal in constructed wetlands under low/high COD concentrations

Nitrate and sulfate are crucial factors of eutrophication and black and odorous water in the surface water and thus have raised increasing environmental concerns. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are the last ecological barrier before effluent enters the natural water body. To explore the simultaneous removal of nitrate and sulfate, the CW microcosms of CW-Con (with quartz sand), CW-ZVI (quartz sand and zero-valent iron), CW-Mag (quartz sand and magnetite), CW-ZVI + Mag (quartz sand, ZVI and magnetite) groups were set up under the low (100 mg/L)/high (300 mg/L) chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration. Under the high COD condition, CW-ZVI group showed the best performance in nitrate (97.1%) and sulfate (96.9%) removal. Under the low COD concentration, the removal content of nitrate and sulfate in CW-ZVI group was better than CW-Mag group. The reason for this result was that zero-valent iron (ZVI) could be the electron donor for nitrate and sulfate reduction. Meanwhile, ZVI promoted chemical denitrification under high COD concentration according to PCA analysis. In addition, the produced sulfides inhibited the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria, resulting in the lowest nitrate removal rate in CW-Mag group with sufficient electron donors. This study provided an alternative method to enhance simultaneous sulfate and nitrate removal in CWs.

Impact of microplastics on the treatment performance of constructed wetlands: Based on substrate characteristics and microbial activities

Presence of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater has posed a huge ecosystem risk. Constructed wetlands (CWs) can effectively intercept MPs, while with MPs accumulation the response of CWs’ performance is still unclear. In order to evaluate those effects, we conducted a 370-day experiment using CW microcosms fed with different levels (0, 10, 100, and 1000 μg/L) of polystyrene (PS) MPs (diameter: 50−100 μm). Results showed that nitrogen removal efficiency was increased (by 3.9%−24.7%) during the first 60 days and then decreased (by 7.1%−41.3%) with MPs accumulating, but no obvious change in COD and TP removal was observed. From further analysis, MPs accumulation changed the biofilm composition (TOC content increased from 41.4% to 52.7%), substrate porosity (electrical resistivity increased by 1.2–2.4 folds), and oxygen mass transfer (|KLa,O2| increased from 3.5% to 18.6%). Moreover, the microbial dynamics presented a higher abundance of nitrifiers (Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas) during the 60-day experiment and a lower abundance in the last days, while denitrifiers (Thauera, Thiobacillus, and Anaerolinea) had a high relative abundance throughout the experiment, being consistent with the variation of nitrification and denitrification rates. Finally, structural equation model analysis proved that due to the changes of substrate characteristics and microbial compositions and activities, the obvious decrease in nitrification efficiency was a direct reason for the decline of nitrogen removal during 370-day MPs accumulation. Overall, our study first prove that MPs accumulation can cause a series of changes in physicochemical and microbial characteristics of substrate, and ultimately affect the nitrogen-transforming process in CWs. Although our conclusions were based on the lab-scale CWs being different from the real wetlands, we hope that the conclusions can provide the effective regulatory strategies to guide the control of MPs in the actual wetlands.

Simultaneously enhanced removal of PAHs and nitrogen driven by Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle in constructed wetland through automatic tidal operation

The lack of dissolved oxygen and weak substrate removal capacity in constructed wetlands (CW) leads to terrible removal of nitrogen and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this study, automatic tidal flow CW microcosms were constructed by improving the oxygen environment (siphon and air-duct) and substrate (magnetite) to enhance purification performance and the mechanism was explored. The results showed that the addition of air-duct could improve the oxygen collection and thus improved the NH4+ removal efficiency. Additionally, nitrogen removal was improved greatly due to the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in aerobic layer with the addition of magnetite. Mass balance indicated the microbial degradation dominated (32–62%) the removal of PAHs. Metagenomic analysis proved the existence of magnetite enhanced the number of PAHs-degrading bacteria, functional groups and metabolic pathways and thus greatly improved the microbial degradation of PAHs. Furthermore, Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle played an important role in promoting the anaerobic degradation of PAHs, which might be served as an electron conduit to establish the direct interspecies electron transfer between iron-reducing bacteria (e.g. Deltaproteobacteria bacterium) and Anaerolineae bacterium to degrade PAHs efficiently. This study provided better understanding of the simultaneous removal of PAHs and nitrogen in tidal flow CWs.

Efficient Microcystis removal and sulfonamide-resistance gene propagation mitigation by constructed wetlands and functional genes analysis

Increasingly prevalent Microcystis blooms and the propagation of the associated resistance genes represent global environmental problems. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a cost-effective technology used for wastewater treatment. In this study, the herb Alisma orientale and three industrial byproducts, namely, blast furnace slag, biochar, and sawdust, were selected to construct mini-CW units. Their potential to remediate toxic Microcystis and their influences on the behaviors of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs, sul1, sul2, and intl1) were analyzed. Approximately 98.46% of Microcystis cells were removed by the sawdust-based CW in just 2 d, wherein <0.37 μg/L residual microcystin (MC)-LR was detected, with a removal efficiency of >96.47%, which is potentially caused by the higher relative abundance of MC-degrading gene mlrA on the substrate. Lower target ARG accumulations in the sawdust-based CW may be attributed to the lower intl1 relative abundance and microbial function mobile element content, which could influence horizontal gene transfer. In three sequential batches for the treatment of eutrophic lake water, six sawdust-based CW units were assembled into CW microcosms. The efficiency of removal of Microcystis and MC-LR by planted CW microcosms ranged between 92.00% and 95.88% and between 86.48% and 94.82%, respectively; this was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that by unplanted ones. Less accumulation of target ARGs was also observed in planted CWs. Planting considerably improved nitrogen removal, possibly owing to the enrichment of genes involved in the KEGG nitrogen metabolism pathway in the substrate through metagenomic analysis.

Aqueous selenium removal and distribution in cattail and duckweed in constructed wetland microcosms

AbstractSelenium (Se)‐affected stormwater runoff raises concerns about potential downstream impact of Se on aquatic ecosystems. Unplanted (UNP) detention ponds augmented with cattail (Typha angustifolia L.; CAT) and duckweed (Lemna minor L.; DWD) may provide a solution for continuous, rapid abatement of Se‐affected runoff. This research was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of CAT or DWD and determining the distribution of Se within a continually flooded detain and drain system. Microcosms containing 3 kg of soil planted to either one CAT, 25 g fresh DWD, or left unplanted (UNP, control) were flooded with a 3‐L solution at 40 μg Se L−1, as sodium selenate (Na2SeO4), or a zero Se control. Over two 10‐d flood–discharge cycles (FDCs), plants in microcosms were evaluated in growth chambers maintained at 30 °C under a 12‐h photoperiod with 400 μmol m−2 s−1 irradiance. Initial and final water, soil, plant, and granular activated charcoal (GAC) were analyzed for total [Se] with inductively coupled plasma–mass spectroscopy (ICP–MS). Data were analyzed with PROC GLM (SAS EG 7.1) at α = .05. Within 10 d after Se application, CAT and DWD decreased aqueous Se from 40 μg Se L−1 to below the 11.8 μg Se L−1 threshold. Selenium recovery ranged between 75 and 100% of the applied Se. In continually flooded systems, the primary elimination pathway appears to be associated with the soil solid phase. Cattail and DWD are suitable species for constructed wetland phytoremediation of Se‐affected runoff. The microcosm design presented may be useful for future evaluations.

Efficient treatment of mercury(Ⅱ)-containing wastewater in aerated constructed wetland microcosms packed with biochar

Effective removal of mercury (Hg) pollutants from contaminated water/wastewater to prevent severe environmental pollution is of great significance due to the extremely high toxicity of Hg. In this study, granular biochar and gravel (control) were packed into intermittently aerated constructed wetland (CW) microcosms to treat Hg(Ⅱ)-containing wastewater over 100 d. The results showed that the biochar-filled CWs exhibited notably better Hg(Ⅱ) removal than the gravel systems by facilitating chemical and microbial Hg(Ⅱ) reduction and volatilization and promoting plant growth and Hg assimilation. More than ten times more Hg was absorbed by the plants (L. salicaria) in biochar CWs than in the gravel systems, with the roots acting as the major sink. In contrast, substrate binding in a predominantly oxidizable fraction was the dominant pathway for Hg removal in the gravel CWs. Biochar substrates also exhibited higher levels of COD, N and P removal, and Hg(Ⅱ) import impacted the removal of these pollutants only slightly. Filling material played a more crucial role than Hg input in shaping the microbial communities in the CWs. The proportions of some dominant genera, including Arenimonas, Lysobacter, Micropruina and Hydrogenophaga, increased in the presence of Hg, implying their tolerance to Hg toxicity and potential roles in Hg detoxification in the CWs. Granular biochar-based CW has high potential for treating Hg(Ⅱ)-contaminated wastewater.

A novel plant-girdling study in constructed wetland microcosms: Insight into the role of plants in oxygen and greenhouse gas transport

Constructed wetland (CW) wastewater treatments could be potential hotspots of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere when removing pollutants, and the existence of wetland plants is an important factor in carbon and nitrogen cycling in CWs. In this study, the wetland mesocosms planted with Phragmites australis were conducted by using the novel plant-girdling method to assess the role of plants in potential O2, N2O, CO2 and CH4 production and transport in treating wastewaters with and without carbon sources. The system with girdling plant showed an obvious decrease of O2 release, but the higher O2 release rates of 157.78 mg O2 m−2 d-1 was obtained with an addition of carbon source. Average values of N2O, CO2 and CH4 fluxes in wetland mesocosms were 0.85 mg N2O m−2 d-1, −152.4 mg CO2 m−2 d-1 and 0.31 mg CH4 m−2 d-1, respectively when girdling and adding carbon source. Girdling plants and adding carbon source facilitated the removal of organics and nitrogen. Our study indicated that girdling wetland plants stimulated transformation of organics and nitrogen by net oxygen release from plants, but it could bring a raising greenhouse gas emission, which provided new slights into an improved understanding of wetland plants functioning in greenhouse gas transport and pollutant removal in CWs for wastewater treatment.

More is better? Constructed wetlands filled with different amount of Fe oxides showed opposite phosphorus removal performance

Iron (Fe) oxides (limonite) could nourish iron reducing bacteria (IRB) and increase the available electron in constructed wetland (CW) system with the cycling between Fe(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ). However, whether the enrichment of IRB could induce “side-effect” of P release is unclear. In the present study, vertical subsurface CW microcosm without limonite (CWA), with low amount (5%) of limonite (CWB), and high amount (15%) of limonite (CWC) were built in order to investigate the effect of addition amount of limonite on the removal performance of P. The addition of limonite significantly improved removal efficiencies of NH4–N, NO3–N, TN (p ≤ 0.05) in CWB and CWC, and except for NH4–N, the removal performance of NO3–N and TN was enhanced in CWC due to the increased amount of limonite. While the removal efficiency of TP was the worst with the promoted limonite amount of CWC. Besides, the release of P occurred in the upper layer (35–55 cm from bottom) of CWC. The distribution of Fe2+ and XPS results indicated the construction of Fe cycle in CWC. Although the quantities of bacteria 16S rRNA, and N related genes showed no difference between treated CWs and control group (p > 0.05), Illumina high-throughput sequencing analysis indicated the relative abundance of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria as well as Fe related bacteria were higher in limonite-treated CWs. In addition, the quantity of phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) in CWC was significantly lower than that of CWA and CWB, which is consistent with the result of water quality and microbial community of PAOs in upper layer of CWC. The results revealed that through active cycling of Fe between Fe(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ), the addition of limonite could enhance N removal while excessive limonite addition might induce the release of P.

Performance and microbial response in a multi-stage constructed wetland microcosm co-treating acid mine drainage and domestic wastewater

Multi-stage constructed wetland microcosms (mixing and sedimentation pond (MS), vertical-flow constructed wetland (VFCW) and surface-flow constructed wetland (SFCW)) were designed to co-treat high-strength acid mine drainage (AMD) and domestic wastewater, with agricultural waste (straw and cow manure) fermentation liquor as stimulation substrate. The 270-day lab-scale study showed that this system was highly effective in enhancing effluent pH (from 2.5 to 8.1) and removing dissolved metals (89.4% of Mn, and 99% of Fe, Zn, Cd and Cu), sulfate (51.9%) and organic/nutrient pollutants (COD, NH4+-N, NO3--N, and TP). The mixing and sedimentation pretreatment could alleviate the burden (strong acidity and high-strength metals) and clogging of wetlands, and the formed metal-rich sludge offered the possibility of metals reclaiming. Quantitative supplementary of fermentation liquor promoted sulfidogenic activity in VFCW, also avoiding excessive release of organic/nutrient pollutants. SFCW was effective in treating residual metals (especially Mn) and organic/nutrients. High-throughput sequencing test showed that the diverse microbe (such as sulfate reducing bacteria, nitrifying bacteria, and denitrifying bacteria) co-existing in this multi-stage system predominantly contributed to the effective remediation. Metal amounts assimilated by wetland plants were very limited (e.g. 1% for Mn) for metals remediation. The multi-stage constructed wetlands co-treatment system quantitatively supplied with liquid waste as carbon source may offer a promising eco-technology for the remediation of AMD.

Removal kinetics and treatment efficiency of heavy metals and other wastewater contaminants in a constructed wetland microcosm: Does mixed macrophytic combinations perform better?

Eight constructed wetland microcosms have been designed using various combinations of three different macrophytes in single as well as mixed planting units. The removal efficiency of major water quality parameters such as biological oxygen demand, total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, ammonium, nitrate and nitrite-nitrogen and heavy metals was evaluated at three retention times. The potential of selected macrophytes for heavy metals uptake was also studied in terms of bioconcentration factor, translocation factor, aerial tissue concentration factor and root concentration factor. Constructed wetland microcosm unit designed using Pistia stratiotes and Phragmites karka exhibited higher removal potential with maximum decay constants for most of the heavy metals and other wastewater contaminants. Maximum translocation and bioconcentration factors were also expressed by Pistia stratiotes and Phragmites karka for Zn (0.69 and 1.69 respectively). However, the maximum root concentration factor and aerial tissue concentration factors were observed in Pistia stratiotes for Cu (0.35) and Zn (0.10) respectively. The paper reports significantly higher removal of wastewater contaminants including heavy metals in mixed species planting as compared to single species. The removal efficiencies for all metals studied in different constructed wetland microcosm units ranged from 43.80 to 63.67%, 75.92–92.07% and 82.17–98.58% for 3, 7 and 14 days retention time respectively. Relative higher values of decay constants were observed for Cr, Cd and Mn. However, the correlation studies between removal efficiencies of heavy metals and several other parameters exhibited significant variation over time.

Comparative evaluation of the macrophytes in the constructed wetlands for the treatment of combined wastewater (greywater and septic tank effluent) in a sub-tropical region

The role of macrophytes in constructed wetlands (CW) has been studied extensively in the last three decades. The remediating effect of macrophytes in CWs depends on whether the species is suitable for the given climatic and operational conditions and on the morphological traits of the species. This study experimentally investigated and compared the contribution of three macrophytes, namely Phragmites karka, Iris kashmiriana, and Sagittaria latifolia in removing pollutants from combined wastewater (greywater and septic effluent) using horizontal sub-surface flow type constructed wetlands (HSSF-CW) under sub-tropical conditions. The study monitored the standard wastewater parameters (COD, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Solids) in the inlet and outlet of the CW microcosms, the fate of nutrients through the planted microcosms, and the growth rate of the selected species. Phragmites karka showed better removal efficiencies than the other two species, with organic loading removal rates of 10 ± 1.3 gm−2d−1, nitrogen removal rates of 2.6 ± 0.4 gm−2d−1, phosphorus removal rates of 1.3 ± 0.2 gm−2d−1, and solids removal rates of 3.6 ± 1.2 gm−2d−1. Mass balance showed that the nutrient uptake by species Sagittaria latifolia (TP – 9.3 g and TN – 48.2 g) was the most, followed by Phragmites karka (TP – 8.6 g and TN – 47.9 g) and Iris kashmiriana (TP – 4.4 g and TN – 29.1 g). Biomass analysis revealed that Phragmites karka had the maximum biomass growth rate with an increment of 1383 gm−2: 524 gm−2 in the above-ground: below ground dry biomass weight, while as Sagittaria latifolia and Iris kashmiriana showed an increase of 1299 gm−2: 866 gm−2 and 663 gm−2: 1312 gm−2, respectively. The macrophytes with well-developed root systems (Phragmites karka) had a better pollutant remediating effect. The nutrient uptake by macrophytes depended on the total dry biomass increase and the nutrient content of the biomass. The CW beds of the three macrophytes need nutrient pre- or post-treatment to comply with the irrigation reuse and conventional sewage treatment plant (STP) discharge regulations in India.
