Review of Student Migrants and Contemporary Educational Mobilities By Johanna L. Waters & Rachel Brooks

Student Migrants and Contemporary Educational Mobilities (2021), written by Johanna Waters and Rachel Brooks, is a multidisciplinary study that explores the increase in international student mobility in recent years by considering conceptual, political, and ethical perspectives. Following the authors' earlier production, Student Mobilities, Migration and the Internationalization of Higher Education, published in 2011, the authors state this new work aims to explain the changes that have occurred in the past few years in the literature on migration and education, examining existing definitions and offering a critical look at theoretical approaches with depth (p.3-8). Another prominent feature of the book is that, after a systematic literature review, it questions the existing structure of the literature, its epistemology, and the conditions of knowledge production. Therefore, in addition to synthesizing the concept of student mobility and migration, the authors scrutinize the political nature of these processes by contributing some critical perspectives to the existing literature.

Understanding coffee tourism development through the dynamic capabilities lens: a qualitative cross-national exploration

ABSTRACT This research contributes to a deeper empirical and conceptual understanding of coffee tourism development. By using a qualitative cross-national approach encompassing five coffee producing nations and guided by the dynamic capabilities framework, this study examines the potential, capitalisation and further consolidation of coffee tourism. The experiences of coffee firm leaders were gathered through semi-structured open-ended interviews; the qualitative analysis uncovered 12 overarching dimensions and helped craft a conceptual framework, with implications for understanding coffee tourism development from a practitioner and conceptual perspective. For instance, coffee tourism's potential is mainly explained by the visitor-centred and firm-centred dimensions, while the individual firm and upstream supply-chain capitalisation dimensions illuminate capitalisation demonstrations. The findings also exhibited relationships with the dynamic capabilities framework. Among these, educational experiences elucidate coffee tourism's potential (sensing) the capitalization of financial gains (seizing) while working alongside the government underlines further tourism development (reconfiguring). Various differences were also noted between countries and regions.

The Interplay of Employee Empowerment, Workplace Engagement, and Organizational Outcomes: A Conceptual Perspective

Employee empowerment has emerged as a pivotal strategy in contemporary organizational dynamics, fostering autonomy, motivation, and innovation. This conceptual paper explores the recent developments and persistent challenges associated with employee empowerment, with emphasis on evolving work structures, demographic shifts, and technological advancements. It analyzes how these changes necessitate renewed approaches to autonomy, communication, and leadership engagement. The paper identifies distinct types and elements of empowerment, verbal, behavioral, and outcome-based, and integrates them with organizational outcomes such as workplace engagement and productivity. Challenges, including leadership resistance, generational diversity, and the digital divide, are also critically examined. The study offers a synthesized view of current theoretical and practical frameworks while highlighting under-researched dimensions such as the moderating roles of leadership style, digital competence, and organizational justice. This paper concludes with a proposed conceptual model and recommendations for future empirical studies to validate new empowerment-outcome relationships in the post-pandemic, hybrid work era.

Exploring cross-country externalities, viable resilience, and sustainability options for small-scale fishing communities in the tropics

IntroductionSmall-scale fishing communities are important for the development of emerging economies, sustaining livelihoods, and global food systems. However, the increasing human-environmental pressures are threatening the provision of these sustainability benefits. Unfortunately, limited research has been undertaken to comparatively explore the increasing vulnerabilities among fisherfolk and how sustainable transformations could be achieved.MethodsA mixed methods approach involving participatory interactions with coastal fisherfolk and sourcing/analysis of data on ocean circulation patterns and sea surface temperature from 2000 to 2020 was utilized. Participatory interactions were conducted with 230 and 209 fisherfolk in India and Papua New Guinea, respectively, to understand the level of vulnerability and possible viable options that could foster coastal fisherfolk sustainability and sustainable development. Results and discussionSmall-scale fisherfolk reported shared commonalities, especially in the fisheries systems, activities, and vulnerabilities. There is gender-specific specialization in fishing activities. Fishing is a job that embodies unique socio-cultural identities. Fisherfolk's identity is protected using century-long fishing methods. Most fisherfolk, especially in Papua New Guinea, predominantly possess low formal education and utilize semi-modern fish preservation techniques. Social-demographic vulnerabilities are increasing, such as the aging population. The declining fishing population leads to unsustainable livelihood futures. The burden of securing household livelihood often falls on a single individual. Increased vulnerability has increased the use of unsustainable fishing practices. Ocean circulation patterns are becoming extreme in all locations. Ocean temperatures have increased by 2 OC from 2000. From 2018-2020, the Indian Ocean Dipole increased to almost 1. Sea surface temperatures are increasing along the northwest fishing coast of India. Sea surface temperatures in northern fishing zones of Papua New Guinea are reducing. Additionally, increasing illegal and exploitative fishing by distant fleets was reported. Fisherfolk are experiencing a socioeconomic identity crisis. Hard and soft measures, including community-based fisheries rights and licensing of fishing operations, are reported, although with mixed results. This calls for collaborative governance mechanisms that are flexible and integrate the fisherfolk communities. Six sustainable leverage points are co-identified and co-created that can enhance sustainable marine fisheries transformations. The leverage points incorporate critical marine social science and fisheries science theoretical and conceptual perspectives and narratives. By incorporating the key components of the leverage points, the possibilities of aligning sustainable fisheries targets to regional and global blue transformation programs in Indian and Papua New Guinea could be initiated. In regions with small-scale fishing communities, findings revealed that although building resilience is complex, due to increasing human-environmental pressures in fishing zones, collaborative actions, including the recognition of the value of conventional fisherfolk, indigenous communities, and fisherwomen inclusion are critical. This helps in creating voluntary actions on sustainable fishing practices, governance, and management. To further drive social-natural science sustainability research in vulnerable tropical fishing regions, emphasis should be placed on conducting research that engages/captures the perspectives of the vulnerable fisherfolk.

A Metareview of Research on Educational Inequality and Socioeconomic Disadvantage

Socioeconomic inequalities in educational achievement are pervasive across societies. To inform a European Commission-funded project on educational inequalities in children, adolescents, and young adults, we used a scoping review methodology to synthesise the methods, topics, and coverage of reviews of empirical studies published in the past five years (2019–2024). Our systematic search of the Web of Science database identified 498 unique records, which were screened for eligibility. Of these records, 57 progressed to full-text screening, with 29 included in the metareview. We extracted data on the reviews’ methodologies, overarching conceptual perspectives, conceptualisations of socioeconomic inequalities and educational achievement, and educational stages covered. Our analysis found gaps, including a lack of qualitative reviews, a lack of focus on primary education and on tertiary education outside of university (e.g., further education college), scarce coverage of the impact of broader contextual indicators of socioeconomic inequality (e.g., school and neighbourhood contexts) on educational outcomes, and a narrow focus on academic achievement. To conclude our metareview, we synthesise and expand the review topics into an interdisciplinary conceptual diagram that illustrates the breadth and depth of research needed in this field.

The role of social antecedents in enhancing psychological safety for women in software development organisations: a mixed-methods investigation

Purpose This paper aims to study the social influences on psychological safety among women employed in software development organisations in India. By integrating conceptual and practical perspectives, the research aims to provide insights into developing inclusive workplace environments for women. Design/methodology/approach A sequential mixed-methods approach was used. In the first phase, qualitative interviews were conducted with 10 senior women managers to explore enablers of psychological safety and identify key antecedents, including supervisor support, coworker support, trust and social embedding. In the second phase, a quantitative survey using a five-point Likert scale was distributed to 300 women in operational roles, yielding 250 valid responses for statistical analysis. Findings The results indicate that social embedding mediates the impact of trust and supervisor support on psychological safety. Furthermore, trust moderates the relationship between supervisor support and social embedding. Both coworker and supervisor support influence trust, which enhances psychological safety, underscoring the significance of social relationships in shaping workplace experiences. Practical implications The paper provides valuable insights for firms seeking to develop HR policies and leadership practices that promote psychological safety for women. By emphasising the role of social embedding and trust, companies can create inclusive and supportive environments that enhance job engagement, retention and overall well-being. Originality/value This research is a pioneering effort to explore the role of social antecedents in psychological safety among women in an emerging economy, contributing to the wider discourse on gender, workplace culture and organisational behaviour.

Marketing Mechanism for the Adaptation of Ukrainian Enterprises to Wartime Conditions Amid Geopolitical and Economic Challenges

This study examines the development of a marketing mechanism to support the adaptation of Ukrainian enterprises in the face of geopolitical and economic challenges. It is argued that wartime conditions and geopolitical instability significantly affect business operations, particularly in areas such as sales, production, raw material supply, logistics, and other critical processes. The research demonstrates that the formulation of adaptive marketing strategies and mechanisms enables enterprises to maintain competitiveness during crisis periods. Developing and implementing marketing adaptation mechanisms is identified as a key success factor for Ukrainian businesses operating under extreme conditions of war and geopolitical uncertainty. The study highlights that implementing modern methods of marketing adaptation requires acknowledging that contemporary businesses are subject to constant transformation due to rapid changes in the economic environment. Globalization, technological advancements, shifts in consumer demand and competition, and the need to adapt to wartime realities amid geopolitical and economic upheavals represent only a few of the challenges enterprises face. Accordingly, the study focuses on the rationale for adopting modern marketing adaptation methods. These include market analysis, attracting new customers, retaining and expanding existing customer bases, developing optimal strategies to respond to economic difficulties using marketing approaches, adaptive models that account for rapid changes in consumer behavior and psychological triggers under crisis conditions, building logistics management systems, and identifying key success factors for enterprise adaptation in times of economic distress. The findings conclude that the war in Ukraine has led to a decline in investment and consumer demand. Manufacturers face limited access to international markets due to export restrictions, disrupted supply chains, and other trade barriers. Security costs for personnel and facilities have increased amid the intensifying conflict, and military actions often result in damage or loss of equipment and infrastructure. Companies located in frontline regions have been especially affected, with many forced to relocate to host communities during the war. It is argued that an effective marketing-based resource management mechanism is a crucial component of a successful marketing strategy. This mechanism involves the optimal use of a company’s financial, human, and material resources. Therefore, it is recommended that companies take into account market needs, the competitive landscape, and internal capacities and constraints to identify the most strategically important markets for achieving business goals and allocate resources accordingly. The study explores the methodology of Target Market Analysis (TAM), which offers deeper insights into the market and allows companies to make data-driven decisions aligned with their specific growth objectives. TAM helps businesses understand the total market size, identify opportunities for specific products, and assess how best to capture value within their target segments. A clear understanding of one’s target market is vital for making strategic decisions and setting priorities in a competitive business environment. A conceptual perspective is proposed on the marketing mechanism for retaining existing customers while acquiring new ones. This dual strategy involves maintaining loyalty among the current customer base through loyalty programs, discounts, and personalized services, while also implementing initiatives to attract new clients. The comprehensive application of these strategies can significantly enhance a company's success by ensuring a steady flow of customers and increasing its profitability. Another key advantage is the improvement of customer loyalty to the brand, especially under conditions of economic instability. An assessment of commodity markets in Ukraine most affected during the war has made it possible to better understand supply and demand dynamics, and the competitive landscape, and to analyze and develop strategic pathways for enterprises producing products within commodity group 72 – “Iron and Steel.” The application of a marketing adaptation mechanism enabled the formulation of recommendations for Ukrainian enterprises on how to adjust their products under complex and unstable conditions, thereby ensuring competitiveness and resilience in times of military conflict and geopolitical tensions. Based on the analysis of export dynamics for the metallurgical industry (commodity group 72 – “Iron and Steel”) in Ukraine from 2020 to 2024, it is concluded that the war had a profoundly negative impact on foreign economic activity. While 2021 marked the peak in exports for this commodity group, a sharp decline followed due to the war and other geopolitical and economic disruptions, including logistical breakdowns and the blockade of seaports. However, signs of stabilization emerged in 2024. Ukrainian exports demonstrated notable flexibility: a decrease in exports of iron and steel to certain countries was offset by growth in others, such as Moldova, Slovenia, and Greece. An evaluation of market convergence was carried out for potential export destinations including China, Mexico, India, South Korea, Belgium, France, Vietnam, Spain, Thailand, and Indonesia. The analysis revealed similarities in business environments, which may be beneficial for Ukrainian industrial enterprises exporting iron and steel products. Among these, Belgium, France, and Spain were identified as the most promising markets due to their relative geographic proximity, high-quality infrastructure, trade openness, and political stability. The study emphasizes the importance of systematically accounting for current logistical constraints and actively seeking alternative export routes, considering the blockade of Black Sea ports and the destruction of transport infrastructure. Logistics flexibility is deemed a key factor for restoring export volumes of commodity group 72 – “Iron and Steel” in 2025. The findings of this study will support the adaptation of Ukrainian enterprises to wartime conditions amid geopolitical and economic challenges, helping them avoid missing timely opportunities to access new international markets. Keywords: marketing mechanism, geopolitical challenges, economic challenges, logistics, adaptive marketing strategies, competitiveness, consumer demand, competition, logistics management, international markets, export restrictions, disrupted supply chains, trade barriers, logistics, trade barriers, resource management, allocate resources, Target Market Analysis (TAM), Iron and Steel, marketing adaptation mechanism, foreign economic activity of enterprises, exports, market convergence, trade openness, political stability, logistical constraints, transport infrastructure, Logistics flexibility, logistics potential of enterprises.

Adjudication in the Rhetorical Context of Chinese Ideological Speech

Abstract Does recent Chinese ideological speech on the rule of law add anything new to Chinese legal reasoning and adjudication? This article argues that the significance of Chinese ideological speech is easier to appreciate when it is studied as rhetoric rather than as legal theoretical arguments or as policy concepts. Recent texts on the Chinese Communist Party’s rule of law ideology are mostly based on preexisting concepts of Chinese legal thought. From a conceptual perspective, these efforts may appear to have little bearing on adjudication in Chinese people’s courts. From the rhetorical perspective, however, the influence of Party ideology on Chinese legal reasoning and adjudication can be seen to emerge from the overall rhetorical context of the Chinese party-state. The result of this influence may be best theorized as an implicit ideological sensibility, which supports the changing priorities of the Chinese party-state. Rhetorical theory also facilitates comparisons between Chinese ideological advocacy efforts and the promotion of policy concepts in other organizations. This article finds a point of comparison for Chinese ideological advocacy in the promotion of the Human Rights-based Approaches to Development within the United Nations system. This comparison casts light on the motivations and challenges of ideological advocacy in organizational settings.

Letters of recognition: the spatial inscription of literature in the Romanian street nomenclature

Similar to other countries from Central and South-Eastern Europe, Romania’s cultural field developed as a literature-centric system. Throughout the process of nation-making and state-building that unfolded starting with the early nineteenth century, literary figures (writers, poets, and other men of letters) have played a critical role in shaping Romanians’ historical consciousness and national identity. This paper intersects the conceptual perspective derived from the tenets of critical place-name scholarship with historical contextualisation provided by literary studies to examine the patterns of spatial inscription of literary figures in Romania’s urban street names. Using as dataset the entire collection of street names in Romania’s cities and towns (N = 49,469), the article analyses who are the canonical writers commemorated in the country’s streetscape and how the presence of writers had changed after Romania’s regime change of 1989. It then charts the spatial distribution of writers’ names across the country’s geo-historical regions, investigates the gender disparity, as well as, the ethnic structuring of the literary namescape. The first to combine critical place-name research with literary studies in a quantitative approach to a large-N set of spatial data, the study contributes to several bodies of scholarship by mapping the memorial literaturisation of street nomenclature at the national level as well as its longitudinal dynamics, regional variation, gender disparity, and ethnic structure.

Data Gravity vs. Model Agility: The New Tension Shaping the Future of Automation and AI: A Systematic Review

Background: The revolutionary advancement of AI in automation as proved with an exponential development in AI has led to a new paradigm shift in computing. As the pull of data gravity (e.g., massive datasets pooled centrally) collides with the model agility of decentralized, edge-based learning, an important tension emerges. This article integrates current academic and operational perspectives on this budding dichotomy and its implications for the future of AI-based systems. Objective: In this literature review, we take a closer look at the history of, and trends in, the data gravity versus model agility discussion, from a conceptual, empirical and technological perspective. It seeks to examine how friction characterizes automation, agility, infrastructure design, ethical governance, and the deployment of AI. Methods: Methods We performed a systematic review and synthesis of >60 (policy white papers and operational concept reports, before March 2025) peer-reviewed articles and operational concept reports. What key thematic lenses are relevant for viewing algorithmic systems in the context of datafication process? These might include data localization, edge computing, federated learning, smart data strategies as well as institutional AI design? Results: The review extracts three dominant narratives of transformation: (1) the near-singularity of data-driven infrastructures, (2) the ascendancy of edgeletigence as an unseen frontier in automation, and (3) the death of the big data towards the rise of could-aware, low-latency smart data systems. Study results, levels of evidence, conceptual models, and guidelines are summarized in tables. Conclusion: A clear trend is emerging around hybridized AI system that combines data locality and model distribution. Systematically integrating ethical oversight, agile architectures and human-machine collaboration in strategic terms, is an increasingly pressing research and policy concern.

Artificial Intelligence, Human and Society in the Context of Ulrich Beck’s Risk Society Theory

The subject of this article is to discuss the cyclical effects of artificial intelligence (AI), a man-made technological system, on human, human consciousness and society. In light of risk society theory, the article's goal is to demonstrate how artificial intelligence, a technology created by humans, can control people and society and what kinds of problems it may pose. Examining the potential interconnections between an artificial entity and consciousness and a real entity (human/society) and consciousness is the article's primary issue. Methodologically, this study adopts descriptive approach. One of the most talked-about subjects in recent years is artificial intelligence, a technological system created by humans that seeks to comprehend how human intellect works and influences action. This technological system can create code, store large amounts of data and use algorithms to generate behavior and communicate in a manner similar to that of a human. AI technology is also capable of solving issues and carrying out a variety of human tasks. In this respect, it can be said that artificial intelligence acts as an artificial existence and consciousness. The theory of risk society, put forward by Ulrich Beck, in its most general definition, is that modern humans create various risks that will threaten their own existence with the knowledge, science and technology they produce. In other words, it means that man puts himself into a network of uncertainties and risks with what he produces in the cyclical world he lives in. Artificial entities and consciousness share the human ability to be a conscious entity, use reason, and generate ideas because artificial intelligence technology produces results that are almost identical to human intellect and consciousness. Although this situation seems to make human life easier, it may carry the risk of pacifying human qualities and devaluing people. Moreover, it can establish a kind of technological hegemony by putting people and societies under the control of technological devices. In line with these evaluations, the article first deals with risk society theory from a conceptual perspective. Then the relationship between technology, human and society is discussed. Finally, the framework of risk society theory is used to analyze the potential impacts of artificial intelligence technology on human life. According to the findings obtained from the article, artificial entity and consciousness based on artificial intelligence technology may blunt the ability to use human qualities and banalize many functions that make human entity special. Moreover, as an entity with reality on the axis of reasoning, thinking and producing solutions, artificial intelligence may fill the human field with the power of alternative and much faster analysis. As a result, it was understood in the study that the human-human relationship that shapes social life may evolve into a human-technology relationship in the future.

Reimagining South–South Higher Education Interactions Under “Triple Disruptions”

Purpose This study aims to investigate the different types of South–South higher education (HE) interactions in the context of “triple disruptions,” using the conceptual perspectives of Southern epistemologies and the typology of “inward- and outward-oriented” HE internationalization. Design/Approach/Methods This study analyzed a range of selected documents, including academic literature, national strategies and legislation, and public reports issued by states, institutions, and other stakeholders that focused on South–South HE interactions. The analysis centered on the rationales and strategies of different South–South HE interaction models. Findings The findings suggest that South–South HE interactions generally occur through a mix of approaches with a preference for inward-oriented expansion diffusion. Given the “triple disruptions,” regional cooperation based on advantages and characteristics remains the most promising form of South–South HE interactions. Additionally, the notion of new types of colonialism serves as a wake-up call for Southern countries’ outward-oriented HE internationalization through relocation diffusion for soft power enhancement. Originality/Value This study contributes to the critical examination of the Western-centric theoretical monopoly on internationalization in HE by clarifying the principles and positions of South–South HE cooperation through epistemological exploration. It draws patterns from the complex practices of existing South–South cooperation in HE based on a typology and attempts to provide theoretical contributions in the context of the “triple disruptions.”

Co-creation of experiences in tourism: A conceptual perspective through a meta-review and thematic mapping

Co-creation of experiences can be defined as the process through which customers and organisations collaborate to create experiences. There has been a notable lack of knowledge regarding tourism experiences and their interrelationship with the co-creation process. This article aims to systematically review the scientific literature on the co-creation of tourism experiences and to delve deeper into the discussion of the different perspectives on tourism experiences, seeking to understand their connection to the co-creation process. To this end, a meta-review, including thematic mapping and content analysis, is applied to 82 articles published between 2009 and 2021, a year that marked the end of a particularly challenging period for the tourism industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The main contributions of this study are the presentation of new definitions of tourism experiences and the systematisation of the co-creation process, considering the supply-side dimensions, given that much of the existing literature predominantly focuses on the tourist perspective. Furthermore, the study identifies existing gaps and proposes a future research agenda.

Red Shift

This paper evokes the dynamic colour space that results when a printed colour (subtractive) interacts with colour from video projection (additive). Colour shapes our knowledge and adds mystery to our world as light and pigmented surfaces interrelate. In our recent work, Breath, we present a richly layered mural-sized print along with video projection and immersive sound; these interacting media enhance the effect of the printed composition. Light filtering and scattering the composition of the printed colour and the time-based superimposition of narrative moving images with spatialized audio combine to create a time-based immersive work that is fundamentally dependent on colour. Since 2014, our experimental projects have used digital print on paper and projected video to evoke the natural environment, from both conceptual and perceptual perspectives; we highlight both environmental integrity and potential threats. In Breath, we consider one of the planet’s most critical ongoing biological interactions: oxygen-producing marine phytoplankton and oxygen-consuming terrestrials. The mural-sized print uses saturated archival colour on a matte, bright white substrate. The video projection heightens the print’s colour space, adding imagery and colour transitions. This paper describes how the fluid colour effect of light on pigment alters both content and viewer experience.

This article problematizes the consolidation of a decolonial feminist stance in the academic-political transmission of the history and epistemology of Psychology for undergraduate courses. The academic, political and institutional trajectory of the author is taken as a detailed study of the complexities that inhabit theoretical and practical training in fields such as Psychology and Decolonial Feminism. Towards a subversive critical position from the feminist project of the Global South, a proposal for a geopolitical understanding of society, subjectivity and, consequently, Psychology is presented. Then, through an intersectional theoretical-political stance, it is pointed out how gender, race, class, sexuality and territory forge and tension the project of Psychology as a science and profession. Finally, we defend an education in Psychology which supports the endless dispute that inhabits the conflicting historiographical, epistemological, theoretical-methodological, conceptual and ethical-political perspectives surrounding the study and intervention in the know-how of Psychology.
