Towards a grammar of theocentric belonging: Kilby, Tanner and beyond

Abstract This article provides foundations for how our God-talk can inform the way we think about and live out belonging. It resorts to three key Christian doctrines: the Trinity, creatio ex nihilo and the incarnation. This exploration begins with some brief observations about the issues Karen Kilby and Kathryn Tanner raised regarding social trinitarianism. It then explores the concept of participation as understood by Tanner as another way of conceptualising theocentric belonging rooted in creation and the incarnation. From this emerges the idea of an expansive theocentric theology of belonging, understood as participation in the divine life through creation and the incarnation. This expansiveness is explored further through the concepts of kinship and deep incarnation.

Images of spectral relatedness: How couples anchor life together in a nursing home in Denmark

AbstractWhen one partner in a couple moves into a nursing home, the sense of shared everyday life and home is disturbed. In this article, we examine how couples respond to radical ruptures in their shared everyday lives, homes, and imagined futures when one partner moves into a nursing home due to severe illness. We draw on the field of imagistic anthropology that attends to the uncertain, ambiguous, and imaginative dimensions of life to capture the often overlooked, albeit important, dimensions of peoples’ lives in situations of uncertainty, rupture, and loss. Inspired by the concept of spectral kinship, we delve into experiences of transgressing space and time, the material and the immaterial, the “real,” the dreamed of and imagined as they are anchored in a play of imagination, a book, and a dream. We call these anchors of belonging. We suggest the concept spectral relatedness to highlight both mundane and spectral dimensions of homemaking and being together. We argue that attending to imagistic qualities in fraught life situations can help bring forth nuances and complexities of how couples face severe illness and the relational and practical changes such life situations entails in the context of homemaking in institutional settings.

Conjoint Analysis to Measure Millennial Generation's Preferences on the Role of Technology in the Existence of Mitra Batik Cooperatives in Tasikmalaya

As a people's economic movement founded on the concept of kinship, a cooperative is a corporate company made up of individuals or cooperative legal entities that engage in cooperatively-based activities. In the city of Tasikmalaya alone there are 603 ooperatives with an active level of 44%. Mitra batik cooperative is one of the oldest consumer cooperatives in Tasikmalaya. In an effort to develop cooperatives, mitra batik cooperatives are faced with a situation where they still have various obstacles for their development, one of which is the low interest and awareness of the community members to participate in cooperatives. In an effort to increase the number of cooperative members, the authors intend to conduct research on the preferences of Tasikmalaya people, especially millennial generation to participate in maintaining the existence of mitra batik cooperatives. The method used is conjoint analysis. According to the research results, millennials consider technology the most significant aspect in preserving mitra batik cooperatives in Tasikmalaya. In the digital age, technology is a crucial element. Millennials like technology's ease. The millennial generation must develop technology to preserve mitra batik cooperatives in Tasikmalaya. Due to the fast expansion of banking, particularly in technology, cooperatives must keep up with technology.

CULTURE SHOCK IN MEDIA DISCOURSE: PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS

The article examines the philosophical opinion of Confucius about benevolence as the core of culture and the justification of the idea of its achievement; it is found that the followers of Confucius studied and improved his teachings, enriching the concept of benevolence and shaping the cultural spirit of the Chinese people. The role of Confucianism in the formation of its unique national character is proven. Challenges to the traditional Chinese concept of kinship from the culture of numbers are considered, which affects political life, education, and everyday life. Thanks to the analysis of the discourse of the media space, the influence of digital media on culture as a whole, as well as the inevitability of culture shock between traditional culture and the culture of the digital, is substantiated.

Making kin is more than metaphor: Implications of responsibilities toward Indigenous knowledge and artistic traditions for museums

AbstractMany Indigenous communities do not regard objects as inanimate, but rather as animate kin. Based on our work as a collaborative group of museum coordinators and Hopi, Anishinaabe, and Penobscot artists, we explore narratives and kinship concepts emerging from working with collections of baskets and pottery. We question how recent theoretical conceptualizations of kinship have become overly rhetorical and, therefore, risk diminishing the tangible responsibilities that Indigenous knowledge systems teach. We explore how the new social networks forged through collaborative practices implicate museum personnel in kinship‐like relationships, which raises the question: What are the critical lessons museums can learn from the work of making and sustaining kin? Conventional western museology rarely contemplates these imperatives. The implications for museums that come with recognizing such networks are not only about conceptualizing kin in new ways, but also developing shared ethical protocols and responsibilities toward Indigenous knowledge and the environment over multiple generations.

Kinship w ujęciu posthumanistycznym. Międzygatunkowe rodziny przyszłości

The author analyzes the works of Patricia Piccinini (sculpture), Shaun Tan (literature) and Joon-ho Bong (film) in terms of the post-humanist idea of interspecies familiarity. The text begins with an explanation of the term Kinship, and then indicates to what extent post-humanism extends its scope and describes the emotional ties between human and other-than-human members of the household. The author presents this kind of post-humanist, multi-genre family life in three different versions: in the field of visual arts, these will be works from the Welcome Guest, and Families of the Future by Piccinini, in the field of the literature – Tan’s Tales from the Inner City, and the film representation – Okja by Bong. Although each of these works brings out slightly different aspects and contexts of the post-humanist vision of the concept of Kinship, they share an openness to what is other-than-human, combined with care and tenderness.

People on Floors: Creating Relics Out of Medical Waste.

This article examines three debates over the nature of human specimens: anatomical dissection in Victorian Britain, the question of ownership over Henrietta Lacks's cells, and recent debates over how to treat remnants of abortion. These cases reveal that specimens are deeply connected to human persons and should be considered with a particular kind of care. The author uses Andrew Solomon's concept of horizontal kinship to support reframing medical waste as "relics"-objects of veneration interpreted as revealing truth about the human experience. Envisioning medical waste as relics allows us to wonder at the ability of the body to provide transformative knowledge, which leads to practices of appreciation to honor the sacrifices of the body.

Crochet Methodology

What stories of religion matter in the age of the Anthropocene? This paper begins by situating the Abundance Crochet Coral Reef, an installation of crocheted coralline landscapes exhibited at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, as a methodological motif and enactment to think creatively about and with the study of religion in the Anthropocene. Journeying through the current trends in various fields in the study of religion that are responsive to Anthropocene concerns, I argue that there is a growing body of scholarly work that troubles the dualisms and hierarchies of human-nature and nature-culture that have informed, and indeed, dominated, conceptualizations about religion and the study of religion. Finally, I turn to feminist theory to continue to in-tune religion storytelling (the study of religion) to the challenges of the Anthropocene. Drawing inspiration from the Abundance Crochet Coral Reef, I explore the concept of kinship to open creative vistas for methodological enrichment in the study of religion.

Exploring the Concept of Menyama Braya: The Cultural Heritage of Hindu and Islamic Communities in Pegayaman Village as a Multicultural Learning Medium

The process of Islamic and Hindu acculturation and harmonious cultural lending in Pegayaman village interested the researchers in conducting this study. The concept of kinship or menyama braya is a concept that unites all differences in Pegayaman village. This study aims to determine (1) the existence of menyama braya in Pegayaman village; (2) the influence of menyama braya culture; (3) the process of internalizing the concept of menyama braya; and (4) the strategy of planting the concept of menyama braya. This study is prepared with qualitative research methods with three approaches, including geographical, socio-historical and cultural approaches used case study design. The results of this study show that the concept of menyama braya is very relevant to the current condition of society because this concept teaches people to remain respectful and have high tolerance even though they have different backgrounds, especially religious.

Nomination of Family and Kinship in Arkhangelsk Dialects

The article deals with the groups of lexemes associated in Arkhangelsk dialects with the concepts of family and kinship. The word-formation nest with the root of rod- (the genus) is much more significant than the nest with the basis of semja- (the family). The same lexemes may mean both specific family members and a group of relatives, in other words, they can be used in a collective meaning. The differentiation turns out to be quite weak. To denote kinship and relatives, the following terms are also used: the names of the people community (bratva, squad, artel, collective farm, population), some pronouns (my, mine, all, ours), metaphors associated with the cultural codes (due to the terminology of S.M. Tolstoy) like a vegetable code (tree, root, seed), animal code (nest), object code (house), somatic code (blood, leg, knee, vein, bone, tail) and the abstract one (side, line). Numerous examples are introduced into the scientific use for the first time.

Living kindness: Re-imagining kinship for a more humane future

As environmental change and mass extinctions underline an urgent need to establish more humane relationships with non-human beings, there is a creative opportunity to reimagine concepts of kinship to promote the collective well-being of all living kinds. Anthropology draws on culturally diverse interspecies relations: some locate human and other species within distinctive and hierarchical categories, while others have more fluid and egalitarian notions of personhood. Engagements with non-human species therefore range from objectifying and exploiting them, to their acceptance as kin, as persons, and as reciprocal co-creative partners in the composition of shared lifeworlds. Though the concept of kinship is conventionally used to illuminate inter-human relations, this article suggests that it has further potential to raise key questions about how societies engage with non-human beings, and our ethical responsibilities towards them. These questions might usefully inform contemporary debates about non-human rights, and how these might be upheld by state and/or international legislation.

On the Dynamics of Kinship in Migration Processes: Some Perspectives from Historical-Anthropological Studies on North Macedonian migrants in Austria

Abstract: Based on two case studies of immigrants from North Macedonia to Vienna, this article sheds light on the dynamics of kinship in the migration process with regard to immigration, settlement and post-migration. The authors argue that the embeddedness in close trans-local social networks facilitates the access to accommodation and jobs; it also enables a certain degree of psychosocial well-being through mutual support and appears to be advantageous when setting up businesses and homeland associations. By placing kinship at the center of attention, it is essential to acknowledge its cultural diversity in order to avoid western-centric concepts of kinship that differ from concepts predominant in parts of southeastern Europe.

Udders, Queer Nests, and Animal Family Trees: Kinship as Keyword in Animal Studies in the Bible

Abstract How might kinship help us think about animals in the Bible, and, conversely, how can the Bible help us think about animal kinship? I propose that the concept of kinship can help us take next steps in Animal Studies in the Bible. After defining kinship and reviewing work on human-animal studies, I turn to animal-animal kinship, the “mutuality of being” that animals share not with humans but with each other. I focus on the four “animal family” laws of the Pentateuch and the so-called humanitarian rationale that has dominated interpretation of them. Pointing to problems with that rationale, I turn to rabbinic reception of these laws in the Mishnah, which, I argue, takes a very different approach that deserves our attention. I close with scientific and source critical perspectives, along with reflection on the real-life stakes of attending to the Bible’s animal families.

Indigenous Methodologies of Care and Movement

In this essay, I examine how research methodologies can draw from Indigenous peoples’ care work and mobilities to contribute towards Indigenous futurities. I draw on stories of my own research trajectory, that has been shaped by the support of Mushkegowuk women, and bring them into dialogue with Indigenous feminist theorizations of futurities, relationalities, care ethics and movement. I examine how methodologies of care can act as extensions of relations of care, and in the process, activate the complexities and expansiveness of Indigenous community, or what I call Indigenous relational geographies, through movement across lands and waters. I reflect on how Indigenous movement is learned and embodied through relations with the non-human world by grounding my discussion in the significance of water relations in the muskegs in so-called northern Ontario Canada and how they have helped me understand Mushkegowuk kinship relations as rippling out in and beyond that region. Overall, I am interested in how mobile relations of care evoke full and fluid conceptions of Indigenous kinship that exceed colonial spatialities, and end by considering how these relationships are crucial in shaping the visions and material relations of Indigenous and anti-colonial futurities moving forward.   

Creating Synergies between International Law and Rights of Nature

AbstractAgainst the backdrop of failing environmental governance, rights of nature (RoN) are lauded as the paradigm shift needed to transform law's approach to nature. RoN have been increasingly proclaimed at the domestic level but remain mostly absent from international law. As examined in this article, this is notably as a result of some profound incompatibilities between international law and RoN, including the fact that most international treaties approach nature as a resource to be owned, exploited or protected for the sake of humans. However, despite this dominant approach to nature, some areas of international law, notably under the leadership of Indigenous peoples, are starting to acknowledge a more relational approach to nature, putting forward concepts of care, kinship, and representation of nature in international law. Building on these developments, this article offers a reflection on potential synergies between RoN and international law, specifically by changing the latter's approach to nature. It argues that some of the RoN concepts concerning duty of care, institutional representation of nature's voice, and ecocentrism could serve as a platform to reinterpret some of the anthropocentric principles of international law, creating some potential synergies between RoN and international law.

Family Kinship in Community-Based Tourism Businesses in Homestay Entrepreneurs Organization in Raja Ampat

The success and sustainability of tourism depends on the local community as the social unit that supports tourism. Community-based tourism initiatives offer solutions to place communities as the main actors in tourism development. In the implementation of tourism business development, communities in Raja Ampat Regency utilize social capital as a tribal, kinship and family unit in developing their businesses. Family members as part of the kinship unit often play a role in running economic businesses and often take part in making important decisions that affect the course of tourism businesses. This paper aims to determine the form and relationship of kinship among members of the Raja Ampat indigenous business and livelihood association, as well as provide a case example of an organization whose decision-making is based on the kinship of its members. Based on the results of the analysis, it is known that family kinship as social capital has an important role in running tourism businesses, and homestay tourism businesses in Raja Ampat are formed because they have an extensive family kinship network. This is closely related to the concept of kinship adopted by the Biak tribe. This complexity also affects the running of the organization and decision-making in the organization of homestay entrepreneurs in Raja Ampat, such as the election of the chairman who comes from the clan with the largest number of members and other decision-making processes.

Analisis Karakteristik Perekonomian Berbasis Kearifan Lokal pada Masyarakat Kampung Naga Desa Neglasari Kecamatan Salawu

Kampung Naga is a traditional village that is quite unique in that it still maintains its local wisdom and culture to this day. The local wisdom that exists in Kampung Naga regulates all activities of the community itself and is comprehensive from various aspects, including the economic conditions of the community. The purpose of this study was to determine the economic characteristics of the Kampung Naga community. To find out these characteristics the research method used is a qualitative description method. From the results of the study it was found that the economic characteristics of the Kampung Naga community were still very traditional and simple and put forward the concept of kinship and mutual cooperation.

Concerns, Considerations and Conceptions of Kinship

Abstract Divorce, remarriage and new partnerships create blended families with complex configurations of emotional and financial engagements. The latest reform of the Danish Inheritance Act in 2008 was an attempt to cope with the legal challenges posed by blended families with regard to inheritance. The solution was to grant the surviving spouse greater rights as well as a greater share of the estate, thus favouring the horizontal conjugal bond between current spouses. Since the surviving spouse is often not the parent of all the deceased's children, the vertical transfer of assets and heirlooms between generations is challenged. This has consequences for the way material things can generate continuities and act to reproduce kinship over time, as a way of kinning former and coming generations. This article addresses the role of inheritance and heirlooms in processes of kinning and de-kinning. Résumé Divorce, mariages et nouveaux partenaires créent des familles recomposes avec des configurations émotionnelles et des engagements financiers complexes. La dernière réforme de la loi danoise sur l'héritage (2008) a été une tentative de répondre aux défis légaux posés par ces familles recomposées au regard de l'héritage. La solution a été de garantir à l’époux ou l’épouse du défunt plus de droits ainsi qu'une part plus importante sur les biens immobiliers, tout en favorisant les liens conjugaux horizontaux entre les époux actuels. Comme l’époux ou l’épouse survivant n'est pas toujours le parent de tous les enfants du défunt, le transfert vertical des biens et possessions entre génération n'est pas assuré. Cela a des conséquences sur la manière dont les biens matériels assurent la continuité de la parenté et assure sa reproduction dans le temps. Cet article interroge le rôle de l'héritage et des donations dans les processus de construction de la parenté et les formes de « dé-parenté ».
