Role of ectomycorrhizal colonization in enhancement of nutrients for survival of plants collected from mountainous cold stress areas

BackgroundEctomycorrhizal (ECM and ECM-like) structures associated with plant root systems are a challenge for scientists. The dispersion pattern of roots within the soil profile and the nutritional conditions are both favourable factors to motivate the plants to make ECM associations.ResultsThis study discusses the colonization of mycorrhizal associations in Kobresia and Polygonum species including Polygonum viviparum, Kobresia filicina, K. myosuroides, Alnus nitida, Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris, and Trifolium repens grown naturally in cold stressed soils of Gilgit-Baltistan (high-altitude alpine Deosai plains), Hazara, Swat, Dir, and Bajaur. Sieved soil batches were exposed to +5 °C (control), -10, -20, -30, -40, -50, -125 °C for 5 h, and selected plants were sown to these soils for 10 weeks under favourable conditions for ECM colonization. Ectomycorrhizal associations were examined in the above mentioned plants. Some ECM fungi have dark mycelia that look like the mantle and Hartig net. Examples of these are Kobresia filicina, K. myosuroides, and Polygonum viviparum. Findings of this study revealed that K. myosuroides excelled in ECM root tip length, dry mass, and NH4 concentration at -125 °C. Contrarily, A. nitida demonstrated the lower values, indicated its minimum tolerance. Notably, T. repens boasted the highest nitrogen concentration (18.7 ± 1.31 mg/g), while P. sylvestris led in phosphorus (3.2 ± 0.22 mg/g). The B. pendula showed the highest potassium concentration (9.4 ± 0.66 mg/g), emphasising species-specific nutrient uptake capabilities in extreme cold conditions. The PCA analysis revealed that the parameters, e.g., NH4 in soil mix (NH4), NO3 in soil mix (NO3), phosphorus in soil in species of Polygonum viviparum, Kobresia filicina, K. myosuroides, Alnus nitida, Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris, and Trifolium repens are most accurately represented in cases of + 5 °C, -10 °C, and -20 °C temperatures. On the other hand, the parameters for ECM root tips (ECM) and Dry Mass (DM) are best described in -40 °C, -50 °C, and − 125 °C temperatures. All parameters have a strong influence on the variability of the system indicated the efficiency of ECM. The heatmap supported the nutrients positively correlated with ECM colonization with the host plants.ConclusionAt lower temperatures, hyphae and spores in roots were reduced, while soluble phosphorus concentrations of leaves were increased in cold stress soils. Maximum foliar nutrient concentrations were found in K. myosuroides at the lowest temperature treatments due to efficient functioning and colonization of ECM.

Nutritional quality of tomato in response to different fertilization doses and conduction systems

The tomato, a rich source of essential nutrients such as vitamins A and C, potassium, and antioxidants, plays a crucial role in human nutrition, promoting health and preventing diseases. In Brazil, its production is vital, involving significant resources and labor. The correct nutritional management of the crop can improve the nutritional attributes of tomato fruits, therefore the correct use of fertilizers is of great importance due to the high need for phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium, throughout the crop cycle. Nutritional management is of great importance in tomato fields due to its high fertilizer requirements throughout the entire crop cycle. This study aimed to assess the effect of different fertilizer doses and management systems on the physicochemical characteristics of tomatoes. The experiment followed a factorial design with five fertilizer doses (A0: 0%; A1: 50%; A2: 100%; A3: 150%; A4: 200% of the recommended dose) and four conduction systems, with three replications. Productivity, lycopene content, total soluble solids (TSS), nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium fruit contents were evaluated. The results showed that higher fertilizer doses increased lycopene levels, reaching 80 μg g-1 with 200% fertilization, while 0% provided 30 μg g-1. Total soluble solids above 4°Bx were observed at doses above 150%, regardless of planting density. Nitrogen content reached 26 mg·100 g-1f.m., favored by lower densities. Calcium was influenced by fertilizer doses, with higher concentrations at 150%. In conclusion, the application of 150% fertilizer dose improved the nutritional quality of tomatoes, and the 200% dose provided suitable levels of TSS and lycopene for processing.

Effect of biochar and inorganic fertilizer on the quality of beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) in Kenya

Despite its health benefits, the production and quality of beetroot is still low in Kenya due to the application of non-recommended rates of fertiliser and soil amendment. This research aimed at contributing to the improvement of the beetroot quality in Kenya. It was designed to determine the effects of biochar and NPK (17-17-17) on the quality of beetroot in Kenya. An RCBD factorial experiment was conducted at Egerton University farm, Kenya, for two seasons. Biochar (0, 5, 10 t/ha) and NPK (0, 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha) were applied together before planting. Data were collected on beetroot diameter, total phenolics, total soluble solids, calcium, iron and phosphorus contents and analysed using SAS statistical software. The co-application of biochar and NPK significantly (p≤0.05) increased the beetroot diameter, iron, calcium, phosphorus, TSS and phenolics content in season two and not in season one. The sole application of biochar showed a significant increase in the iron content of beetroot in season one. However, biochar did not have a significant effect on beetroot diameter, mineral content, TSS and phenolics content of beetroot in season two. The sole application of NPK at 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha significantly (p≤0.05) increased the diameter of beetroot and iron content in both seasons one and two and also significantly improved the calcium and phosphorus content in season two. These NPK levels were not statistically different from each other, but different from the control. It is therefore recommended to apply NPK and biochar for quality beetroot.

Bacillus B2 promotes root growth and enhances phosphorus absorption in apple rootstocks by affecting MhMYB15.

Due to the chelation of phosphorus in the soil, it becomes unavailable for plant growth and development. The mechanisms by which phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria activate immobilized phosphorus to promote the growth and development of woody plants, as well as the intrinsic molecular mechanisms, are not clear. Through the analysis of microbial communities in the rhizosphere 16S V3-V4 and a homologous gene encoding microbial alkaline phosphomonoesterase (phoD) in phosphate-efficient (PE) and phosphate-inefficient apple rootstocks, it was found that PE significantly enriched beneficial rhizobacteria. The best phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, Bacillus sp. strain 7DB1 (B2), was isolated, purified, and identified from the rhizosphere soil of PE rootstocks. Incubatingwith Bacillus B2 into the rhizosphere of apple rootstocks significantly increased the soluble phosphorus and flavonoid content in the rhizosphere soil. Simultaneously, this process stimulates the root development of the rootstocks and enhances plant phosphorus uptake. After root transcriptome sequencing, candidate transcription factor MhMYB15, responsive to Bacillus B2, was identified through heatmap and co-expression network analysis. Yeast one-hybrid, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and LUC assay confirmed that MhMYB15 can directly bind to the promoter regions of downstream functional genes, including chalcone synthase MhCHS2 and phosphate transporter MhPHT1;15. Transgenic experiments with MhMYB15 revealed that RNAi-MhMYB15 silenced lines failed to induce an increase in flavonoid content and phosphorus levels in the roots under the treatment of Bacillus B2, and plant growth was slower than the control. In conclusion, MhMYB15 actively responds to Bacillus B2, regulating the accumulation of flavonoids and the uptake of phosphorus, thereby influencing plant growth and development.

Studies on the Phosphorus-Solubilizing Ability of Isaria cateinannulata and Its Influence on the Growth of Fagopyrum tataricum Plants.

I. cateinannulata has been shown to promote the growth of F. tataricum. However, whether its growth-promoting capacity is related to its ability to solubilize phosphorus has not been reported. Therefore, in this study, we sought to assess the phosphorus-solubilizing ability of 18 strains of I. cateinannulata by analyzing their growth in an inorganic phosphorus culture medium. The effects of F. tataricum on growth and effective phosphorus content were analyzed through field experiments. The results showed that all 18 strains of I. cateinannulata had a phosphorus release capacity, with phosphorus solubilization ranging from 5.14 ± 0.37 mg/L to 6.21 ± 0.01 mg/L, and strain 9 exhibited the best phosphorus solubilization effect. Additionally, the field results demonstrated that I. cateinannulata positively influenced the growth, root length, and yield of F. tataricum by increasing the chlorophyll and soluble phosphorus content. This study will provide a material basis and theoretical support for investigating the interaction mechanism between I. cateinannulata and F. tataricum.

Effects of Waterlogging Stress on Root Growth and Soil Nutrient Loss of Winter Wheat at Seedling Stage

With global climate change, flooding events are becoming more frequent. However, the mechanism of how waterlogging stress affects crop roots needs to be studied in depth. Waterlogging stress can also lead to soil nitrogen and phosphorus loss, resulting in agricultural surface pollution. The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between soil nitrogen and phosphorus distribution, root growth characteristics, and nitrogen and phosphorus loss in runoff water under waterlogging stress during the winter wheat seedling stage. In this paper, Zhengmai 136 was selected as the experimental material, and two water management methods (waterlogging treatment and non-waterlogging control treatment) were set up. Field experiments were conducted at the Wudaogou Hydrological Experimental Station in 2022 to assess the nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in runoff water under waterlogging stress. The study also aimed to analyze the nitrogen and phosphorus content and the root distribution characteristics in different soil layers under waterlogging stress. The results showed as the following: 1. Waterlogging stress increased the characteristic parameters of winter wheat roots in both horizontal and vertical directions. Compared with the control treatment, the root length increased by 1.2–29.9% in the waterlogging treatment, while the root surface area and volume increased by an average of 3.1% and 41.9%, respectively. 2. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents in waterlogged soils were enriched in the 0–20 cm soil layer, but both tended to decrease in the 20–60 cm soil layer. Additionally, there was an inverse relationship between the distribution of soil nutrients and the distribution of wheat roots. 3. During the seedling stage of winter wheat, nitrogen loss was the main factor in the runoff water. In addition, nitrate nitrogen concentration averaged 55.2% of the total nitrogen concentration, while soluble phosphorus concentration averaged 79.1% of the total phosphorus concentration. 4. The results of redundancy analysis demonstrated that available phosphorus in the soil was the key environmental factor affecting the water quality of runoff water. Total phosphorus and dissolved phosphorus in the water were identified as the dominant factors influencing root growth.

Isolation of the inorganic phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria Lysinibacillus sphaericus and assessing its role in promoting rice growth.

Soluble phosphorus scarcity severely limits plant growth and crop yield. In this study, a strain of inorganic phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, was isolated from rice rhizosphere soil. The available phosphorus content in liquid inorganic phosphorus identification medium and in L. sphaericus-inoculated soil increased from 204.28mg/L to 1124.68mg/L and from 4.75mg/kg to 7.04mg/kg, respectively. The pH decreased significantly from 6.87 to 6.14. Incubation with L. sphaericus significantly increased malic and succinic acid content in the liquid inorganic phosphorus identification medium and increased acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity in the soil. Inoculation with L. sphaericus significantly increased rice growth, chlorophyll a/b content, and photosynthesis by increasing the soluble phosphorus content in the rice rhizosphere soil under phosphorus-deficient conditions. Further analysis revealed that L. sphaericus improved soil phosphorus release by decreasing soil pH and promoting acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity. This study supports the production of microbial fertilizers to improve rice yield in phosphorus-deficient conditions.

Abiotic processes control carbon dioxide dynamics in temperate karst lakes.

Inland waters are crucial in the carbon cycle, contributing significantly to the global CO2 fluxes. Carbonate lakes may act as both sources and sinks of CO2 depending on the interactions between the amount of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) inputs, lake metabolisms, and geochemical processes. It is often difficult to distinguish the dominant mechanisms driving CO2 dynamics and their effects on CO2 emissions. This study was undertaken in three groundwater-fed carbonate-rich lakes in central Spain (Ruidera Lakes), severely polluted with nitrates from agricultural overfertilization. Diel and seasonal (summer and winter) changes in CO2 concentration (CCO2) DIC, and CO2 emissions-(FCO2)-, as well as physical and chemical variables, including primary production and phytoplanktonic chlorophyll-a were measured. In addition, δ13C-DIC, δ13C-CO2 in lake waters, and δ13C of the sedimentary organic matter were measured seasonally to identify the primary CO2 sources and processes. While the lakes were consistently CCO2 supersaturated and FCO2 was released to the atmosphere during both seasons, the highest CCO2 and DIC were in summer (0.36-2.26 µmol L-1). Our results support a strong phosphorus limitation for primary production in these lakes, which impinges on CO2 dynamics. External DIC inputs to the lake waters primarily drive the CCO2 and, therefore, the FCO2. The δ13C-DIC signatures below -12‰ confirmed the primary geogenic influence on DIC. As also suggested by the high values on the calcite saturation index, the Miller-Tans plot revealed that the CO2 source in the lakes was close to the signature provided by the fractionation of δ13C-CO2 from calcite precipitation. Therefore, the main contribution behind the CCO2 values found in these karst lakes should be attributed to the calcite precipitation process, which is temperature-dependent according to the seasonal change observed in δ13C-DIC values. Finally, co-precipitation of phosphate with calcite could partly explain the observed low phytoplankton production in these lakes and the impact on the contribution to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. However, as eutrophication increases and the soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) content increases, the co-precipitation of phosphate is expected to be progressively inhibited. These thresholds must be assessed to understand how the CO32- ions drive lake co-precipitation dynamics. Carbonate regions extend over 15% of the Earth's surface but seem essential in the CO2 dynamics at a global scale.

Influences of pretreatment methods on the mechanical and environmental behaviors of PG-GGBS-LM ternary stabilizer.

Phosphogypsum is a kind of acidic industrial byproducts with high content of soluble phosphorus and fluorine pollutants, which requires to be pretreated when used as cementitious material to (partial) replace traditional Portland cement. In this study, five different pretreatment methods were proposed for comparative analysis to examine the pretreatment effect on the mechanical and environmental behaviors of ternary phosphogypsum (PG), ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), and lime (LM) mixed stabilizer. Series laboratory tests, including unconfined compressive strength (UCS), pH, phosphorus (P)/fluorine (F) leaching, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests, were conducted to comprehend the macro- and microscopic mechanism. The results show that it is essential to grind raw PG to finer powdered state, so that it reacts more easily and quickly with LM and water. In addition, it was noticed that the UCS and P/F leaching concentration are not only affected by the mixing proportion of the PG-GGBS-LM ternary stabilizer, but also by the curing duration. The UCS increases rapidly from initial curing period and then grows slowly after 28days of curing. From the perspective of strength evolution, mixing proportion of PG: GGBS: LM = 15:80:5 is optimal, but considering the economy and environmental related issues, PG: GGBS: LM = 30:65:5 was regarded as a more attractive choice. The findings can provide a reference for the selection of pretreatment methods and design of PG-based cementitious materials suited for stabilized soils.

Pedological features of a sustainable halophyte wetland: El Hito saline pond (Central Spain)

AbstractIn semi‐arid Mediterranean regions, particularly in some wetland soils, salinity is thought to be an indicator of low‐quality soils. In this study, a characterization is presented of the soils surrounding El Hito saline pond (Castilla La Mancha, Central Spain), an ecological halophyte niche within a natural semi‐arid steppe land. The main aim is to classify the salt‐affected soils and their morphology, genesis, and physico‐chemical properties. Four soil profiles were opened with a backhoe machine for sampling and subsequent description on the basis of their pedogenetic morphology. Systematic surface sampling was also performed. Standard methods were followed to measure the soil properties of 27 samples. Overall electrical conductivity (EC) and pH levels of the wetland were mapped (using ArcGIS 3.1.3). Soil salinity at elevated levels was detected, inhibiting plant uptake of water and nutrients. Distinct sub‐areas of extreme elevated surface salinity providing specialized plant habitats and poor soil structure were observed, as well as a mainly whitened‐yellowish‐greenish soil colour due to salt accumulation and poor drainage. The soils also showed alkaline pH values. In most samples, the pH was over 8.5, and EC was higher than 4 (dS m−1), and in several samples higher than 20 (dS m−1). A low sodium (Na) content was detected in the saturation extract where magnesium (Mg+) was the dominant soluble cation, followed by both calcium (Ca+) and sodium (Na+), and then potassium (K+), present in lower proportions. Sulphate (SO42−) and then chloride (Cl−) anions were dominant, although carbon trioxide, (CO3−) and carbonate (CO32−) anions were also present. The percentages of organic carbon (C) were very low, while total nitrogen (TN) and available phosphorus (P) were higher in the upper horizons, suggesting a degree of eutrophication. The present work will increase the existing knowledge about the role of El Hito saline pond, that play a vital ecological role in the broader biosphere, providing new suggestions to readers on how this knowledge can be used to improve these types of ecosystems. In particular, the agricultural pesticides and fertilizers continuously damage the soil fertility as evidenced by the high content of soluble phosphorus found in some points of the Hito saline pond.

Retardation mechanism of phosphogypsum in phosphogypsum-based excess-sulfate cement

The effect of phosphogypsum (PG) on the hydration and retardation mechanism of phosphogypsum-based excess-sulfate slag cement (PESC) was mainly investigated. Based on the natural characteristics of PG, such as low pH value and the presence of soluble phosphorus impurities, the content of PG passing the 4.75 mm standard sieve was used as a variable to study the retardation mechanism of PG on PESC. It can be inferred from the heat flow and cumulative heat flow that the induction period is significantly prolonged with the content of PG, which is also reflected in the increase of the setting time of PESC. In the early period of hydration, as the content of PG increases, the soluble phosphorus concentration increases, and the pH value decreases. The changes in soluble phosphorus concentration and pH value affect the microstructure and amount of hydrates. Combined with experimental results, it has been demonstrated that the delay in the hydration of PESC by PG content is mainly due to: the excessive dissolution of Ca2+ and SO42- promotes the recrystallization of dihydrate gypsum; the dissolution of soluble phosphorus reduces the pH value in the pore solution and forms precipitates of calcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite; in the initial reaction period, a large amount of ettringite and C-S-H gel precipitate to form a protective film; the decrease in pH value leads to a decrease in carbonization resistance, and CO2 in the air is more likely to attack the PESC paste, react with alkaline substances in PESC, or degrade hydrated C-S-H and ettringite. The above factors all lead to a decrease in exchangeable ions during the hydration, thereby prolonging the setting of PESC.

Foundation and evaluation of a diagnosis and recommendation integrated system for star apple (Chrysophyllum cainito L.)

Diagnosis and recommendation integrated system (DRIS) is a greatly accurate and reliable mean of evaluating the exact nutrition status of crops via foliar analysis. DRIS has been applied to many types of crops, but DRIS has not been established for and applied to star apple, which is an important fruit in many countries. Therefore, this study aims to (i) detect soil obstacles in star apple cultivation, (ii) create a DRIS for star apple, and (iii) apply the created DRIS norms to evaluate the macro-nutrition status of star apple. In total, 90 leaf samples were obtained from 90 different star apple farms, where 90 soil samples were also collected. The soil analysis results revealed that concentrations of available nitrogen and soluble phosphorus were low and medium, indicating a high risk of reduction in star apple yield. The average yield of star apple was 200.0 kg plant−1. The high-yielding group had higher concentrations of N, K, and Mg in the leaf than the low-yielding group; however, the concentrations of Fe and Mn in the leaf were opposite, and the concentrations of P, Ca, Cu, and Zn were equivalent in the two groups. The DRIS norms have been established for star apple with 28 nutrient ratio pairs and consisted of means, coefficients of variation, variances (S2), and variance ratios (S2 l/S2 h), whose values were 0.136–182.6, 21.0–69.5%, 0.0024–10400.9, and 1.89–34.3, respectively. The results of applying the DRIS norms revealed that the nutrient status of star apple was deficient of N, K, and Mg.

Heating aluminum dross: Harmless process and utilization as cement admixture

Phosphogypsum (PG) and aluminum dross (AD) with harmful impurities seriously hinder its large-scale engineering utilization. In this paper, the properties of AD and PG as cement admixture were investigated with the aim of reducing the environmental pollution and landfill stockpiling pressure. The migration and transformation rules under crucial factors were analyzed by different characterization methods while AD was heated at different temperature. Then, the compressive strength, soluble phosphorus and fluorine concentration, hydration heat and expansion rate of specimens prepared with AD, PG, and Portland cement (PC) were evaluated to illustrate the hydration mechanism. Compared to the other experiment sets, the results indicated that AD treated at 900°C not only had a higher nitrogen removal rate, but also maintained hydration activity at a relatively high level. Moreover, Heating AD at 900℃ effectively accelerated the dissolution of gypsum and calcium silicate, resulting in increased formation of ettringite (AFt), calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) and calcium aluminium hydrates (C-A-H). When the binder consisted of 14% heated aluminium dross (HAD), 6% PG, and 80% PC, the specimen reached the highest compressive strength value at 25.87 MPa. This work provided a new strategy for synergistic utilization of PG and AD, promoting the development of environment-friendly industrial wastes-based cementitious materials effectively.

Waste ashes from burned sunflower hulls as new fertilising materials

Closing the loop – An EU action plan for the circular economy identified the Fertilisers Regulation revision as a key legislative proposal to boost the market for secondary raw materials. The European Commission has adopted recently EU Fertilising Products Regulation EU 2019/1009 expanding its scope to secondary-raw-material-based products (from biogenic wastes and other secondary raw materials). During the industrial processing of sunflowers, sunflower husks used as alternative fuels resulting in the generation of waste ash. Sunflower ash is a known material as a good and cheap source of potassium. In present study the tested samples of ashes is characterized as a starting raw material for the producing fertilizers in an accredited and authorized Laboratory for fertilisers quality. The tested samples is not loaded with heavy metals and the risk of recycling contaminants has not been assessed. According to the content of available (water-soluble) elements, the content of soluble phosphorus and micronutrients is very low, while potassium is completely water-soluble (40 to 50% K2O m/m), therefore, the tested ashes can be regarded as a good raw material as a source of potassium component in the final product. The pH reaction of the samples is extremely alkaline, therefore it is necessary to neutralize pH reaction in the industrial processing of this raw material, or to restrict the final product for use on acid reaction soils.

Isolation of endophytic fungi from Cotoneaster multiflorus and screening of drought-tolerant fungi and evaluation of their growth-promoting effects.

In the context of climate change and human factors, the drought problem is a particularly serious one, and environmental pollution caused by the abuse of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is increasingly serious. Endophytic fungi can be used as a protection option, which is ecologically friendly, to alleviate abiotic stresses on plants, promote plant growth, and promote the sustainable development of agriculture and forestry. Therefore, it is of great significance to screen and isolate endophytic fungi that are beneficial to crops from plants in special habitats. In this study, endophytic fungi were isolated from Cotoneaster multiflorus, and drought-tolerant endophytic fungi were screened by simulating drought stress with different concentrations of PEG-6000, and the growth-promoting effects of these drought-tolerant strains were evaluated. A total of 113 strains of endophytic fungi were isolated and purified from different tissues of C. multiflorus. After simulated drought stress, 25 endophytic fungi showed strong drought tolerance. After ITS sequence identification, they belonged to 7 genera and 12 species, including Aspergillus, Fusarium, Colletotrichum, Penicillium, Diaporthe, Geotrichum, and Metarhizium. According to the identification and drought stress results, 12 strains of endophytic fungi with better drought tolerance were selected to study their abilities of dissolving inorganic phosphorus and potassium feldspar powder and producing indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). It was found that the amount of dissolved phosphorus in 7 strains of endophytic fungi was significantly higher than that of CK, and the content of soluble phosphorus was 101.98-414.51 μg. ml-1; 6 endophytic fungi had significantly higher potassium solubilization than CK, and the content of water-soluble potassium ranged from 19.17 to 30.94 mg·l-1; 6 strains have the ability to produce IAA, and the yield of IAA ranged between 0.04 and 0.42 mg. ml-1. This study for the first time identified the existence of endophytic fungi with drought tolerance and growth-promoting function in C. multiflorus, which could provide new direction for plant drought tolerance and growth promotion fungi strain resources. It also provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent application of endophytic fungi of C. multiflorus in agricultural and forestry production to improve plant tolerance.

Endofungal bacteria and ectomycorrhizal fungi synergistically promote the absorption of organic phosphorus in Pinus massoniana.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECMFs) that are involved in phosphorus mobilisation and turnover have limited ability to mineralise phytate alone. The endofungal bacteria in the ectomycorrhizal fruiting body may contribute to achieving this ecological function of ECMFs. We investigated the synergistic effect and mechanisms of endofungal bacteria and ECMF Suillus grevillea on phytate mineralisation. The results showed that soluble phosphorus content in the combined system of endofungal bacterium Cedecea lapagei and S. grevillea was 1.8 times higher than the sum of C. lapagei and S. grevillea alone treatment under the phytate mineralisation experiment. The S. grevillea could first chemotactically assist C. lapagei in adhering to the surface of S. grevillea. Then, the mineralisation of phytate was synergistically promoted by increasing the biomass of C. lapagei and the phosphatase and phytase activities of S. grevillea. The expression of genes related to chemotaxis, colonisation, and proliferation of C. lapagei and genes related to phosphatase and phytase activity of S. grevillea was also significantly upregulated. Furthermore, in the pot experiment, we verified that there might exist a ternary symbiotic system in the natural forest in which endofungal bacteria and ECMFs could synergistically promote phytate uptake in the plant Pinus massoniana via the ectomycorrhizal system.

Selection and Characterization of Phosphate-Solubilizing Fungi and Their Effects on Coffee Plantations.

The use of phosphate-solubilizing fungi in coffee cultivation is an alternative to the use of traditional fertilizers. The objective of this study was to analyze the mechanisms involved in the phosphorus solubilization of fungal strains and to evaluate the effect of a phosphate-solubilizing strain on coffee plants. For this, phosphorus-solubilizing fungal strains were selected for evaluation of their solubilization potential and phosphatase activity. Coffee plants were inoculated in the field with a phosphate-solubilizing strain, and the soil and foliar soluble phosphorus contents, as well as coffee bean yield, were quantified. Of the 151 strains analyzed, Sagenomella diversispora, Penicillium waksmanii, and Penicillium brevicompactum showed the highest solubilization. Aspergillus niger and P. waksmanii presented the highest soluble phosphorus values; however, P. brevicompactum showed the highest phosphatase activity. The P. brevicompactum strain inoculated on the coffee plants did not favor the foliar phosphorus content but increased the soil soluble phosphorus content in two of the coffee plantations. The plants inoculated with the phosphate-solubilizing strain showed an increase in coffee bean weight on all plantations, although this increase was only significant in two of the three selected coffee plantations.

Silicon-phosphorus pathway mitigates heavy metal stress by buffering rhizosphere acidification

Heavy metal pollution threatens food security, and rhizosphere acidification will increase the bioavailability of heavy metals. As a beneficial element in plants, silicon can relieve heavy metal stress. However, less attention has been paid to its effects on plant rhizosphere processes. Here, we show that for Japonica (Nipponbare and Oochikara) and Indica (Jinzao 47) rice cultivars, the degree of root acidification was significantly reduced after silicon uptake, and the total organic carbon, citric acid, and malic acid concentrations in rice root exudates were significantly reduced. We further confirmed the results by q-PCR that the expressions of proton pump and organic acid secretion genes were down-regulated by 35–61 % after silicon treatment. Intriguingly, phosphorus allocation, an intensively studied mechanism of rhizosphere acidification, was altered by silicon treatment. Specifically, among total phosphorus in rice seedlings, the soluble proportion increased from 52.0 % to 61.7 %, while cell wall phosphorus decreased from 48.0 % to 32.3 %. Additionally, silicon-mediated alleviation of rhizosphere acidification has positive effects on relieving heavy metal stress. Simulation revealed that low acidification of the nutrient solution resulted in a decrease in bioavailable heavy metal concentrations, thereby reducing rice uptake. We further confirmed that the impediment of rhizosphere acidification led to free-state Cr3+ in solutions decreasing by 43 % and contributed up to 63 % of silicon's mitigation of Cr(III) stress. Overall, we propose a novel mechanism in which silicon reduces heavy metal absorption by increasing plant soluble phosphorus concentration and buffering rhizosphere acidification. This paper provides a unique insight into the role of silicon in plants and, more importantly, a theoretical reference for the rational application of silicon fertilizer to improve phosphorus utilization efficiency, alleviate heavy metal stress, and balance soil pH.

Illuminated septic tank – A microalgae assisted onsite wastewater treatment system

To reduce the anthropogenic nutrient loading into natural waterways, onsite wastewater treatment is essential for households without access to municipal sewer systems. However, many conventional septic tanks significantly underperform the centralized wastewater treatment. In the present study, a novel illuminated septic tank inoculated with the consortium of microalga Chlorella vulgaris and aerobic bacteria was developed by modifying the conventional configuration. The inclusion of microalgae facilitated aeration inside the septic tank through photosynthetic oxygen evolution, and the microalgae-bacteria consortium enhanced the wastewater treatment performance. With the operation at 15 ℃ and a hydraulic retention time of 2.5 days, the lab-scale algae-assisted septic tank significantly decreased the concentrations of ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N), soluble phosphorus (P), total P, and total chemical oxygen demand by 54%, 65.2%, 78.5%, and 90.7% in the discharged effluent, respectively (p < 0.05), whereas the conventional septic tank without microalgae did not exhibit any treatment of NH4+-N or soluble P and the total P removal efficiency was lower by 50%. Meanwhile, the photosynthetic activity of microalgae altered the gas composition in the tank headspace by consuming carbon dioxide, emitting oxygen, and inhibiting the evolution of methane, which further benefited the aeration requirement and contributed to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from septic systems.
