Development of total logistics support management information system and its applications to the aerospace industry

This research is based on the concept of computer-aided acquisition and logistics support (CALS) information management methods, to establish the information interactive sharing relationship between aerospace industry, customers and sub-contractors, total logistics support (TLS) system is developed to provide the information platform for a variety of military aircraft maintenance management. As for the maintenance data record collection is used mainly to establish a database of advanced materials acquisition and other related information that can be inputted into maintenance data collection analysis system (MDCAS) and TLS for further utilising. This paper provides the overall applied benefits of TLS and the major applications are to access required information promptly, via data collection, storage, statistics, and analysis, and required information transfer so as to improve the integrated logistic ability of aerospace industry and enhance overall competence in logistics of military aircraft maintenance management.

A Navy CALS Implementation of an Electronic Product Data Capture and Translation System

ABSTRACTThis paper describes the development of a system to capture and provide computer‐aided acquisition and logistics support (CALS) compliant product data of printed wiring assemblies. The Navy's Rapid Acquisition of Manufactured Parts (RAMP) Program has fostered the demonstration and use of product data standards which include EDIF, IPC‐350, IGES, and CCITT Group 4 Raster. A comprehensive approach is outlined for the design and manufacturing use of electronic product data. This approach lays the foundation for the unified product data modeling efforts espoused for PDES/STEP. In conjunction with this outline, the development of a computer‐aided design (CAD) system is described for the practical capture of existing technical data. A computer‐aided engineering (CAE) capability exists to enhance or augment inadequate existing data.

FFG-61 Prototype Digital Technical Library

USS Ingraham (FFG-61) is the prototype ship for NavSea's Advanced Technical Information System (ATIS). ATIS is a digital technical library, which holds on optical disks the ship's 2,000 technical manuals and 73,000 drawing sheets. It contains a detailed ship's configuration index (derived from SCLSIS) to lead the user to the proper drawing or manual, and it replaces the ship's aperture cards and the second (library) copy of the technical manuals. ATIS, and the data standards established and tested through ATIS development, will be the technical library portion of micro-SNAP and SNAP III. It also forms an important part of NavSea's plans to utilize EDMICS data. This paper describes the goals and technical concepts behind the development of ATIS. Problems encountered, solutions developed, and lessons learned are detailed. Special attention was paid to the application of the Computer Aided Acquisition and Logistic Support (CALS) standards, problems caused by conflicts and ambiguities in those standards, and recommendations for future application and tailoring of the standards. Original program goals are compared with actual operational experiences. Plans for future expansion are outlined, including applications of this technology in the availability planning and execution process. A comparison is developed among the various methods of optical imaging and their costs and benefits.

RAMP: A Test Bed for the Navy's Use of PDES Product Data

The Rapid Acquisition of Manufactured Parts (RAMP) Project is a U.S. Navy program employing computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) technologies and Computer-Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support (CALS) standards to facilitate parts procurement in the Navy supply system. As an R&D manufacturing/logistics program administered through the Naval Supply Systems Command (NavSup), RAMP is serving as a test bed for the ordering and manufacturing of parts using prototype versions of the Product Data Exchange Specification (PDES). The central theme of this paper is to highlight the objectives of RAMP which include (1) the integration of CIM technologies into the Navy logistics system, (2) the specification of procedures and standards to communicate part requirements to automated manufacturing activities, and (3) the installation of flexible CIM cells in Navy industrial sites. In large measure, the eventual success of RAMP will corroborate the feasibility of using neutral product data standards to procure and maintain naval weapon systems in the 1990s and beyond.
