Water-Induced Phase Transition in Cyclohexane/n-Hexanol/Triton X-100 Mixtures at a Molar Composition of 1/16/74 Studied by NMR.

Molecular aggregation in a mixture of Triton X-100/n-hexanol/cyclohexane at a molar ratio of 1/16/74 is studied upon addition of small amounts of water. The composition of organic components has been chosen at a ratio n-hexanol/cyclohexane where a well-formed hydrogen bond network has been described. The ratio Triton X-100/n-hexanol has been chosen to afford a stoichiometry of ethylene oxide (EO) residues/n-hexanol of 1/2. At these conditions the addition of water consecutively produces the appearance of three defined phases: a clear solution, a lamellar phase, and a microemulsion. The two corresponding transitions occur at water/EO/n-hexanol molar ratios of 2/1/2 (clear to lamella), and 3/1/2 (lamella to microemulsion), while phase separation occurs at a molar ratio of 4/1/2, highlighting the important role of stoichiometry. Molecular dynamics measured by 1H NMR techniques, such as DOSY, and calculations of T1 and T2 relaxation times allow distinguishing the transition between the different phases and justifying their structure. Molecular assembly in the three phases is organized around hydrogen bond networks in which the hydroxyl groups of both TX-100 and n-hexanol, ethylene oxide groups of TX-100, and water participate. 1D 1H NMR spectral changes correlate with the different characteristics of the different phases. As the main characteristics of the lamellar phase we find a very restricted mobility of the molecules involved, and water chemical shifts in 1D 1H NMR spectra of around 5.0 ppm, higher than that of bulk water appearing at 4.7 ppm.

Hydrocarbon composition of tropospheric aerosol in the south of Western Siberia

We considered the methodological questions: aerosol sampling on board research aircraft, extraction of an organic component, and identification of its constituent compounds. It is verified how aviation materials (kerosene, oil, hydraulic fluid) can influence the measurement data. We analyzed the composition of organic components of atmospheric aerosol, sampled in the winter-spring period of 2013 at altitudes of 500–7000 m over the southern part of the Novosibirsk reservoir. In the samples, we identified the normal-structure alkanes, cyclanes, and alkyl arenes. Cyclic saturated and alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons were detected in the composition of atmospheric aerosols of Western Siberia for the first time.

Pu and Am Distribution in the System Soil-Water-Carboxylic Resin

Dynamics of Pu and Am distribution between components of the system soil-water-carboxylic resin is studied for soils with various absorbing (clay-humus) complexes. The fractional composition of organic components of the aqueous phase of the system and TUE content in the fractions were examined to elucidate the Pu and Am speciation in the solution. The Pu and Am concentrations in the aqueous phase strongly depend on the content and composition of the soil humus matter. Transuranic elements are associated essentially with the humic acid fractions, this trend being more pronounced for Pu. In the system with increased humus content, TUE occur in the solution as complexes with humus substances, and in the system with lower humus content, as hydrolyzed species. The features of sorption processes occurring on the clayhumus complex of the soil were judged from the sorption isotherms of the radionuclides on a resin. Sorption on the resin is controlled by the Pu and Am speciation in the solution.

On-line measurements of diesel nanoparticle composition and volatility

A thermal desorption particle beam mass spectrometer (TDPBMS) and tandem differential mobility analyzers (TDMA) were used for on-line measurements of the chemical composition and volatility of nanoparticles and larger particles emitted from a modern, heavy-duty diesel engine operated at light and medium loads under laboratory conditions. Temperature-dependent TDPBMS mass spectra and mass spectra obtained using spectrally distinctive oil and synthetic Fischer–Tropsch fuel were analyzed using mass spectral matching methods to obtain quantitative information on the contributions of fuel, oil, oxidation products, and sulfuric acid to particle composition. TDMA measurements of volatility yielded information on nanoparticle vapor pressures and therefore on the composition of organic components. The results indicate that, for these operating conditions, the volatile component of both diesel nanoparticles and larger particles is comprised of at least 95% unburned lubricating oil. TDMA volatility measurements also detected residual species a few nanometers in diameter, which may be non-volatile cores (soot, metal oxide) or low-volatility organic compounds. These on-line analyses provide new insights into the mechanisms of diesel nanoparticle formation.

Estimation of solubility and interaction parameters in binary liquid mixtures by reversed-flow gas chroamtography

A new method, called reversed-flow gas chromatography, is presented for the measurement of the gaseous equilibrium concentrations of all the components under study, both in the pure state and in binary liquid mixtures. From the equilibrium concentrations, activities, activity coefficients and volume fraction activity coefficients were determined. Using various empirical equations relating activity with the molecular interactions between the components of a binary liquid mixture, the solubility parameters of ethanol, 1-propanol, acetone and methylethylketone in water were calculated. The total interaction parameters and the partial contributions of the dispersion, orientation and “residue” forces on the van der Waals attraction between the organic compounds and water were also computed. The variation of the interaction parameters with the composition of organic component in the binary mixture was investigated. The successful application of reversed-flow gas chromatography to the estimation of polymer solubility parameters is also reported. Finally, the solubility parameters found by the present method are compared with those determined by other techniques or calculated theoretically.
