Unveiling the Composition of La Pajarita PVAc-Based Paints in Joan Miró’s Studio and in Three Artworks from the 1970s

In this study, we present the first characterisation of the polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) paints of commercial Spanish brand La Pajarita preserved in the studios of Joan Miró (1893–1983) in Mallorca, Spain. Investigation of several black and white paint samples using complementary analytical techniques (XRD, SEM–EDX, FTIR, and Py–GC–MS) allowed for the identification of pigments and binding media in studio materials, as well as in three artworks dating from the 1970s. Through comparative analysis, it was possible to find significant similarities between the composition of La Pajarita paints conserved in cans in the artist’s studio with black and white painted layers from three artworks by Miró. Miró’s use of La Pajarita paints is extensively documented in studio notes, photographs, and videos, and these paints are known to have been used by other significant Spanish artists. However, their composition has remained largely undiscovered until now. This research contributes to the knowledge of PVAc paints, providing evidence of their use by Joan Miró. The analytical results serve as a valuable reference for comparing and identifying these synthetic paints in other artworks, as well as aiding in attribution or dating studies. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the significance of materials found in artists’ studios as a fundamental resource for identifying the materials present in artworks.

Exploring the Metabolome and Antimicrobial Properties of Capsicum annuum L. (Baklouti and Paprika) Dried Powders from Tunisia

In this study, for the first time, the volatile fraction from two domesticated Capsicum annuum accessions (“Paprika” and “Baklouti”) collected in Tunisia was investigated by two complementary analytical techniques, such as Solid-Phase Microextraction–Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) and Proton Transfer Reaction–Time-of-Flight–Mass Spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS). The obtained results highlighted the presence of a high number of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), including monoterpene and sesquiterpene compounds with α-curcumene, I-zingiberene, β-bisabolene and β-sesquiphellandrene as the major components. In addition, GC/MS was used to investigate the non-volatile chemical composition of the dried powders and their extracts, which were found to be rich in sulfur compounds, fatty acids and sugars. Eleven bacterial strains were chosen to assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of the extracts. The results showed that the extracts exhibited strain-dependent behavior, and the type strains displayed a greater susceptibility to the treatments, if compared to the wild strains, and, in particular, showed the best antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus.

Multivariate Analysis of Water Quality in the Seybouse River: Implications for Pollution Management

ABSTRACTHeavy metal contamination in water bodies is a pervasive and persistent environmental challenge in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries. This study investigates the use of multivariate analysis methods for monitoring variations in water quality along a spatial gradient and for the interpretation of pollution levels at different sampling sites. We assessed the water quality of the Seybouse River and identified possible sources of pollution using three complementary multivariate analysis techniques (PCA, NMDS, and K‐means clustering). The results indicate a longitudinal gradient in water quality associated with industrial and agricultural activities in the middle and lower Seybouse River. Physico‐chemical and heavy metal analyses show high water turbidity with elevated concentrations of iron and chromium. We show that the contamination stems from four different sources, which can be categorized into different pollution levels. Our results suggest that complementary multivariate methods are a robust approach to identifying and categorizing significant sources of pollution in rivers, enabling the development of future successful water quality management strategies based on water pollution levels. This study highlights the importance of monitoring water quality and taking effective measures to control and mitigate pollution from various sources to ensure the safety of the environment and human health.

Multi-spectroscopic characterization system for cultural heritage materials analysis (SYSPECTRAL): Conception and example

A comprehensive understanding of chemical composition of cultural heritage materials usually requires several complementary analytical techniques. Given the fragility and value of artworks, minimizing or avoiding sampling and performing in situ analysis under ambient light is an important goal. This article outlines a novel prototype designed to merge LIBS, laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIF), Raman spectroscopy using a single pulsed laser, and reflectance spectroscopy in a multi-spectroscopic characterization system for cultural heritage analysis (SYSPECTRAL). The aim is to analyze cultural heritage materials in their original place, obtaining both elemental and molecular information at such same point that is not always insured with several separated experimental settings. The SYSPECTRAL system focuses on compactness, mobility, and ease of operation. Software designed for the prototype controls multi-spectroscopic measurements, allows for image capture, precise localization, and data acquisition. Reflectance spectra examined the material and colors at the surface, and the LIBS-LIF-Raman package examines the stratigraphic structure of a multi-layered painted sample.

A Miscibility Study of p(MMA-co-HEMA)-Based Polymer Blends by Thermal Analysis and Solid-State NMR Relaxometry.

Ternary amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) consist of a multicomponent carrier with the aim of improving physical stability or dissolution performance. A polymer blend as a carrier that combines a water-insoluble and a water-soluble polymer may delay the drug release rate, minimizing the risk of precipitation from the supersaturated state. Different microstructures of the ternary ASD may result in different drug release performances; hence, understanding the phase morphology of the polymer blend is crucial prior to drug incorporation. The objective of this study is to investigate the miscibility of the water-insoluble p(MMA-co-HEMA) and water-soluble polymers such as HPC, HPMC, HPMC-AS, and Soluplus. To prepare the polymer blends, p(MMA-co-HEMA) was spray dried in 80/20 and 90/10 (w/w) ratios with one of the water-soluble polymers. Thermal analysis (mDSC and DMA) and solid-state (ss)NMR relaxometry were applied to study the miscibility of these blends. No conclusions regarding miscibility could be drawn from the Tg measurements by thermal analysis. However, phase-separation could be demonstrated in all blends by ssNMR relaxometry. Moreover, by measuring both the T1ρH and T1H relaxation times, domain sizes between 5 and 50 nm could be estimated. This work shows the importance of using complementary analytical techniques to investigate polymer miscibility.

Pilot Study for Deciphering Post-Translational Modifications and Proteoforms of Tau Protein by Capillary Electrophoresis-Mass Spectrometry.

Abnormal accumulation of tau protein in the brain is one pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Many tau protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) are associated with the development of AD, such as phosphorylation, acetylation, and methylation. Therefore, a complete picture of the PTM landscape of tau is critical for understanding the molecular mechanisms of AD progression. Here, we offered a pilot study of combining two complementary analytical techniques, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC)-MS/MS, for bottom-up proteomics of recombinant human tau-0N3R. We identified 50 phosphorylation sites of tau-0N3R in total, which is about 25% higher than that from RPLC-MS/MS alone. CZE-MS/MS provided more PTM sites (i.e., phosphorylation) and modified peptides of tau-0N3R than RPLC-MS/MS, and its predicted electrophoretic mobility helped improve the confidence of the identified modified peptides. We developed a highly efficient capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF)-MS technique to offer a bird's-eye view of tau-0N3R proteoforms, with 11 putative tau-0N3R proteoforms carrying up to nine phosphorylation sites and lower pI values from more phosphorylated proteoforms detected. Interestingly, under native-like cIEF-MS conditions, we observed three putative tau-0N3R dimers carrying phosphate groups. The findings demonstrate that CE-MS is a valuable analytical technique for the characterization of tau PTMs, proteoforms, and even oligomerization.

Methods in molecular photocrystallography.

Over the last three decades, the technology that makes it possible to follow chemical processes in the solid state in real time has grown enormously. These studies have important implications for the design of new functional materials for applications in optoelectronics and sensors. Light-matter interactions are of particular importance, and photocrystallography has proved to be an important tool for studying these interactions. In this technique, the three-dimensional structures of light-activated molecules, in their excited states, are determined using single-crystal X-ray crystallography. With advances in the design of high-power lasers, pulsed LEDs and time-gated X-ray detectors, the increased availability of synchrotron facilities, and most recently, the development of XFELs, it is now possible to determine the structures of molecules with lifetimes ranging from minutes down to picoseconds, within a single crystal, using the photocrystallographic technique. This review discusses the procedures for conducting successful photocrystallographic studies and outlines the different methodologies that have been developed to study structures with specific lifetime ranges. The complexity of the methods required increases considerably as the lifetime of the excited state shortens. The discussion is supported by examples of successful photocrystallographic studies across a range of timescales and emphasises the importance of the use of complementary analytical techniques in order to understand the solid-state processes fully.

Green micellar UPLC and complementary eco-friendly spectroscopic techniques for simultaneous analysis of anti-COVID drugs: a comprehensive evaluation of greenness, blueness, and whiteness

The development of sustainable analytical methodologies that minimize hazards, waste generation, and energy consumption has become crucial. This study introduces pioneering green‒blue-white approaches for the simultaneous quantification of montelukast sodium (MLK) and fexofenadine hydrochloride (FEX) in combination formulations. The first approach employs an ultra-performance liquid chromatographic method (UPLC) with a green micellar mobile phase of 0.02 M sodium dodecyl sulfate and 10% 1-pentanol (65:35%). The method demonstrated excellent resolution, peak symmetry, and a short analysis time, with retention times of 3.53 min for MLK and 1.67 min for FEX. The MLK and FEX linearities were 1–260 and 1.2–312 μg/mL, respectively. The second approach involves complementary built-in spectroscopic techniques (second derivative, third derivative, and ratio difference methods) using water as a solvent, providing a green, simple, low-cost alternative in laboratories where expensive chromatographic devices may not be readily available. The MLK and FEX linearities were 3–50 and 3–60 μg/mL, respectively. All methods were comprehensively validated and showed satisfactory results. The proposed methods demonstrated excellent linearity (r2 ≥ 0.9990), accuracy (recovery 98.5–101.5%), and precision (RSD ≤ 2%) across wide concentration ranges. A multifaceted evaluation was conducted to assess the environmental sustainability, real-world applicability, and economic viability of the proposed methods in comparison with previously reported techniques. This comprehensive assessment leveraged several state-of-the-art tools, including NEMI, ComplexGAPI, AGREE, ESA, BAGI, and RGB12. The suggested approaches exhibited favorable quadrant profiles in the NEMI and ComplexGAPI assessments, coupled with higher AGREE scores (0.90, 0.86) than reported (0.62, 0.74, 0.75, 0.69, 0.74, 0.74, and 0.75), in addition to higher ESA score (88, 92) than reported (75, 84, 85, 79, 82, 82, and 83), collectively affirming their environmentally friendly credentials. Moreover, we embraced the innovative notions of 'blueness' and 'whiteness' assessment by harnessing the recently formulated BAGI and RGB12 algorithms. The higher BAGI score (90, 82.5) than reported (72.5, 70, 70, 67.5, 67.5, 67.5, and 72.5), confirmed the excellent real-world applicability of the proposed methods, while the notable RGB12 indices (89.8, 88.1) than reported (67.8, 72.8, 71.5, 67.1, 73.7, 70.3, and 73.2), validated their cost-effectiveness and overall sustainability, contributing to an eco-friendly future for quality control processes.

Towards 3D determination of the surface roughness of core–shell microparticles as a routine quality control procedure by scanning electron microscopy

Recently, we have developed an algorithm to quantitatively evaluate the roughness of spherical microparticles using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The algorithm calculates the root-mean-squared profile roughness (RMS-RQ) of a single particle by analyzing the particle’s boundary. The information extracted from a single SEM image yields however only two-dimensional (2D) profile roughness data from the horizontal plane of a particle. The present study offers a practical procedure and the necessary software tools to gain quasi three-dimensional (3D) information from 2D particle contours recorded at different particle inclinations by tilting the sample (stage). This new approach was tested on a set of polystyrene core-iron oxide shell-silica shell particles as few micrometer-sized beads with different (tailored) surface roughness, providing the proof of principle that validates the applicability of the proposed method. SEM images of these particles were analyzed by the latest version of the developed algorithm, which allows to determine the analysis of particles in terms of roughness both within a batch and across the batches as a routine quality control procedure. A separate set of particles has been analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) as a powerful complementary surface analysis technique integrated into SEM, and the roughness results have been compared.

A survey study on arsenic speciation in coal fly ash and insights into the role of coal combustion conditions

Coal fly ashes (CFAs) are the low-density byproducts of the coal combustion process. Improper or uncontrolled CFA disposal poses significant environmental and health concerns due to the potential leaching of toxic heavy metals such as arsenic (As). Previous studies have investigated the content and speciation of As in different CFA samples, yet systematic information on As speciation in CFA with representative coal source and combustion conditions is still missing. Based on a recent survey study on the typical coal sources and combustion conditions across the U.S., this study selected 19 representative CFA samples to systematically investigate As speciation and potential correlations with these parameters. The composition, morphology, mineralogy, and As speciation of these CFA samples were characterized by complementary analytical, microscopic, and spectroscopic techniques. Synchrotron X-ray spectroscopy and microscopy analyses revealed the dominant As oxidation state to be As(V) and with strong associations to Ca, with the exception of 3 samples that had 19–51% As(III), likely due to the use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) process. Principal component analysis was conducted to identify potential correlations of As concentration and oxidation state with parameters such as major element content, loss on ignition (LOI), average particle size, coal source, and combustion condition. Al2O3 and FeO content were found to capture a majority of the variability. Results from this study provide fundamental basis for understanding the correlations between coal source, combustion conditions, CFA characteristics, and As speciation, and providing insights for downstream beneficial utilization or disposal management.

Alcogel formation analysis: An important step for scCO2 aerogel production

The production of biopolymeric aerogels, for tissue engineering, currently involves three steps: gelation (hydrogel), solvent exchange (alcogel), and supercritical drying (aerogel). The alcogel formation, the longest step, can be optimised by exploring high pressures/mild temperatures. This work aimed to integrate/optimise the production process of alginate/gelatine aerogels, by performing solvent exchange and drying continuously within the same equipment. High-pressure solvent exchange (HPSE) was compared with the conventional method by analysing the alcogel and solvent with two complementary analytical techniques: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Refractive Index (RI). HPSE resulted in a faster solvent exchange, reducing 86 % of the processing time. The solvent exchange conditions did not significantly affect the aerogel structure, density, porosity, and surface area. Still, HPSE and the drying time influenced pore distribution and decreased mechanical properties. The drying stage was optimised to 2 h, showing the feasibility of integrating solvent exchange and supercritical drying for alginate-gelatine aerogels production.

Challenges in the analysis of pharmaceutical lentiviral vector products by orthogonal and complementary physical (nano)particle characterization techniques

Lentiviral vectors (LVVs) are used as a starting material to generate chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells. Therefore, LVVs need to be carefully analyzed to ensure safety, quality, and potency of the final product. We evaluated orthogonal and complementary analytical techniques for their suitability to characterize particulate matter (impurities and LVVs) in pharmaceutical LVV materials at development stage derived from suspension and adherent manufacturing processes. Microfluidic resistive pulse sensing (MRPS) with additional manual data fitting enabled the assessment of mode diameters for particles in the expected LVV size range in material from adherent production. LVV material from a suspension process, however, contained substantial amounts of particulate impurities which blocked MRPS cartridges. Sedimentation-velocity analytical ultracentrifugation (SV-AUC) resolved the LVV peak in material from adherent production well, whereas in more polydisperse samples from suspension production, presence of particulate impurities masked a potential signal assignable to LVVs. In interferometric light microscopy (ILM) and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), lower size detection limits close to ∼ 70 nm resulted in an apparent peak in particle size distributions at the expected size for LVVs emphasizing the need to interpret these data with care. Interpretation of data from dynamic light scattering (DLS) was limited by insufficient size resolution and sample polydispersity. In conclusion, the analysis of LVV products manufactured at pharmaceutical scale with current state-of-the-art physical (nano)particle characterization techniques was challenging due to the presence of particulate impurities of heterogeneous size. Among the evaluated techniques, MRPS and SV-AUC were most promising yielding acceptable results at least for material from adherent production.

Abstract PO3-07-01: Multiscale Computational Analysis of Patient-Matched Multi-Modal Imaging of Breast Tissue Microenvironment

Abstract Introduction: Mammographic breast density is a strong quantitative cancer risk factor, but its link to underlying tissue and cellular level changes are weakly understood. Understanding the complex restructuring changes in the breast tumor microenvironment and its impact on breast density is integral to improving risk assessment and treatment strategies. A novel approach was developed to stratify mammographic dense breast tissue into areas of active dense tissue and passive dense tissue. Active dense tissue is structurally reorganizing and links to cancer dynamics, whereas passive dense mammographic tissue remains organized.1,2 A complementary wavelet-based analysis technique to measure the multiscale anisotropy of collagen fibers from Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging demonstrated clinical cancer diagnostic potential in mouse carcinoma and human pancreatic cancer.3,4 This tool is now leveraged for a multi-modal study in which patient-matched H&E tissue biopsies are imaged using both bright-field microscopy and SHG imaging to compare with the patient’s corresponding mammograms. Stratifying the mammographic density into active and passive dense areas, a correlation between biopsy tissue anisotropy and mammographic density subtypes can be calculated to help understand how tumor microenvironment changes affect a patient’s mammographic breast tissue composition. Methods: SHG and brightfield-imaged biopsy slides from 10 patients (five malignant, five benign) collected from Maine Medical Center (Maine, US) were analyzed using the 2D Wavelet Transform Modulus Maxima (WTMM) Anisotropy Method generating a large-scale and a small-scale anisotropy factor as well as a scale-combined anisotropy calculated from their large- and small-scale anisotropy separation. A multi-modal anisotropy score was calculated by adding the imaged area’s H&E combined anisotropy score with its respective SHG combined anisotropy score. This analysis was done on eight randomly selected ductal areas for each imaging modality on a slide and correlated with the measured areas of density subtypes from the whole mammographic view. Linear regression was used for determining correlation between H&E and SHG anisotropy factors as well as with active and passive mammographic density subtype measurements. Results: The malignant patients’ small-scale H&E anisotropy factor positively correlated with their small scale SHG anisotropy factor (R2=0.571). No correlation was found for the benign patients (R2=0.011). The strongest correlations were found between benign patients’ mammographic passive (positive correlation) and active (negative correlation) dense tissues vs the H&E anisotropy scale-combined factor (R2=0.858 and R2=0.961, respectively). The largest malignant patient correlation was a negative relationship between SHG anisotropy scale-combined factor and overall mammographic density (inclusive of both active and passive dense tissue) (R2=0.891). The multi-modal anisotropy score correlated with overall mammographic density for both benign (positive correlation, R2=0.698) and malignant patients (negative correlation, R2=0.773). Combining the multi-modal anisotropy factor from SHG and H&E with the active dense tissue measurement using K-Means clustering, 5/5 malignant and 4/5 benign patients were correctly classified. Conclusion: Density in mammograms correlates with underlying quantitative changes in a patient’s tissue and collagen anisotropy. Combining both H&E and SHG analysis on tissue biopsy with active and passive density metrics from computational mammography leads to the best predictive potential than any one method on their own.

The relevance of the initial conditions in glassy carbon electrode sensing applications: the ferri/ferrocyanide redox reaction model system in aqueous solution

Carbon electrodes, especially the glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) are widely accepted as very versatile sensing platforms. However, correlating the behaviour of the ferri/ferrocyanide redox couple ([Fe(CN)6]3-/4−) with the GCE's surface modification is challenging. The surface modification can be achieved by applying a pre-conditioning electrochemical activation procedure. Hence, we report the investigation performed in order to provide further insights into the electrochemical behaviour of the commonly used redox probe in aqueous solutions. To that aim we took advantage of powerful and complementary electrochemical analytical techniques, like cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Thus, this work highlights the critical role of the GCE initial conditions for optimizing the charge transfer processes and therefore to improve the [Fe(CN)6]3-/4− performance in sensing applications. The best results were obtained in phosphate buffer saline solution with previous electrochemical activation by fast potential cycling between [-0.5 and +1.8] V (vs. Ag|AgCl (KCl sat.)). Finally, one can consider this an eco-friendly and simple procedure to be carried out in the lab, however, its use must be carefully optimized when exploring other systems, as highlighted herein.

Mortars and Renders: The Case of the Roman Villa Horta da Torre Fronteira, Portugal

The archaeological site of villa Horta da Torre in Portugal reveals distinctive architectural features within the context of Roman villae in Hispania. Notably, the triclinium was designed with an artificial cascade originating from a double apse wall, and the walls were adorned with mosaic tessellae panels and marble skirting. During the Roman era, the surrounding area belonged to the former province of Lusitania, with Augusta Emerita serving as its capital. This study examines 11 mortar samples from various contexts and functions, such as masonry, preparatory, render, and opus signinum mortars. A set of complementary analytical techniques was employed to determine the textural and mineralogical compositions of the mortars. The aim was to gain insights into the production techniques and the selection of raw materials within the geological context of this rural construction. It was observed that the processing of raw materials and production techniques did not always adhere to the rules of Vitruvius. A comparison with other villas revealed comparatively less meticulous attention to sand selection and precise layering for mural painting. Nevertheless, it was noted that in preparatory layers for the supranucleus and nucleus tesserae, ceramic pieces were intentionally added to improve the mortar. The binder used was calcitic lime, likely obtained from locally sourced limestone. The nature of aggregates is diversified but consistent with the local geological provenance within a radius of less than 3 km, in accordance with two sand exploration sites. This research aligns with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, contributing specifically to SDG 11 and Target 11.4, which “aims to strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage”.

Observational Analysis of the Educational Management of Conflicts Between Young Children in the Emmi Pikler Nursery School Using Complementarity of Data Analysis

AbstractConflicts are inevitable in interpersonal relationships. In fact, they are usual in early childhood education centers and, thus, many educators consider them readily available educational tools, particularly valuable for children’s social development if they are constructively managed. In this research, we investigate the educational management of conflicts between young children at Emmi Pikler Nursery School in Budapest. In this early childhood education center, conflict is considered vital for children’s socialization, so the educational management of these episodes aims to support children’s resolution strategies and ultimately promote healthy socialization. The study objectives were: (1) to explore the details of the educator’s behavior in the different moments the conflict goes through; (2) to unravel the temporal distribution of the educational intervention; (3) to discover which behaviors from the conflicted children ―victim and instigator― trigger the intervention; and (4) to deepen in the effect of the intervention in children’s immediate behavior. We applied a systematic observation and used three complementary data analysis techniques to meet the objectives: Lag sequential analysis, T-Pattern detection and Polar coordinate analysis. Results indicate that the educator’s relational behavior is adaptive to the phases of the conflict and that there is a structured temporal distribution within them. Regarding children, particular behaviors from victim and instigator trigger the educator’s intervention and this intervention progressively leads to more adapted behaviors in conflicted children. In conclusion, the studied educational management of conflicts between children proves to be optimal in promoting children’s good behavior and in accompanying their socialization process.

Multi-Technique Characterization of 3.45 Ga Microfossils on Earth: A Key Approach to Detect Possible Traces of Life in Returned Samples from Mars.

The NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover is actively exploring Jezero crater to conduct analyses on igneous and sedimentary rock targets from outcrops located on the crater floor (Máaz and Séítah formations) and from the delta deposits, respectively. The rock samples collected during this mission will be recovered during the Mars Sample Return mission, which plans to bring samples back to Earth in the 2030s to conduct in-depth studies using sophisticated laboratory instrumentation. Some of these samples may contain traces of ancient martian life that may be particularly difficult to detect and characterize because of their morphological simplicity and subtle biogeochemical expressions. Using the volcanic sediments of the 3.45 Ga Kitty's Gap Chert (Pilbara, Australia), containing putative early life forms (chemolithotrophs) and considered as astrobiological analogues for potential early Mars organisms, we document the steps required to demonstrate the syngenicity and biogenicity of such biosignatures using multiple complementary analytical techniques to provide information at different scales of observation. These include sedimentological, petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses to demonstrate macro- to microscale habitability. New approaches, some unavailable at the time of the original description of these features, are used to verify the syngenicity and biogenicity of the purported fossil chemolithotrophs. The combination of elemental (proton-induced X-ray emission spectrometry) and molecular (deep-ultraviolet and Fourier transform infrared) analyses of rock slabs, thin sections, and focused ion beam sections reveals that the carbonaceous matter present in the samples is enriched in trace metals (e.g., V, Cr, Fe, Co) and is associated with aromatic and aliphatic molecules, which strongly support its biological origin. Transmission electron microscopy observations of the carbonaceous matter documented an amorphous nanostructure interpreted to correspond to the degraded remains of microorganisms and their by-products (extracellular polymeric substances, filaments…). Nevertheless, a small fraction of carbonaceous particles has signatures that are more metamorphosed. They probably represent either reworked detrital biological or abiotic fragments of mantle origin. This study serves as an example of the analytical protocol that would be needed to optimize the detection of fossil traces of life in martian rocks.

Zeolite‐Based Catalysts for Conversion of Oxygenated Polymer Waste by Positron Annihilation

AbstractPositron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) has been employed to investigate the catalysts HZSM‐5 and MESO−Y, which play a pivotal role in catalyzing and upgrading plastics, with a primary focus on oxygenated polymers, thereby transforming existing plastic materials into simpler, higher‐quality value‐added products. In this study, PALS was systematically compared with other complementary analytical techniques. The research outcomes have successfully demonstrated the efficacy of PALS in elucidating the morphology and topology of zeolites at micro/meso‐meter scales.The first experiment focuses on H‐ZSM‐5 zeolite subjected to treatments involving polyurethane and polypropylene. The second experiment delves into H‐ZSM‐5 zeolites with varying Si/Al ratios, both before and after conversion. The third experiment investigates Y zeolites that are surfactant templated to induce meso‐porosity, examining their fresh state as well as their post‐conversion condition.The PALS analysis was supplemented by BET (Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller) analysis and NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectroscopies. Notably, PALS exhibits superior sensitivity, at the sub‐nanometer scale, suggesting its potential as a preferred complementary method for catalysis studies. In conclusion, the integration of PALS into the repertoire of analytical tools enhances our understanding of catalyst behavior and catalytic processes, offering valuable insights for the advancement of plastic recycling and catalysis research.
