Reasons of diversification strategy in construction: a view of senior managers

Purpose Many construction companies use the diversification strategy to take advantage of its various advantages. However, previous studies on this strategy have neither analysed its management perspective nor considered the pre-diversification stage of construction companies. The purpose of this study is to provide a detailed discussion about the diversification motivations of construction companies and to evaluate the pre-diversification decision-making criteria at the corporate level in the construction industry from the perspective of senior managers. Design/methodology/approach The related literature was reviewed to determine the reasons for diversification. The data required to investigate the relationship between company profiles and reasons for diversification were then obtained through a semi-structured questionnaire survey conducted with 40 senior construction managers. The results were analysed through statistical tests. Findings Profiles of construction companies have no significant effect on reasons for diversification. The majority of contractors diversify regardless of typology, risk attitude or diversification modes and describe themselves as a prospector or an analyser, risk-averse and moderately diversified. Finally, the related diversification is more favourable than the unrelated one. Research limitations/implications The questionnaire survey was conducted with companies in Turkey. The scope of the study could be extended to other countries or more companies to increase its generalization capability. This study reveals managerial behaviours required for construction companies to overcome the challenges faced in making a decision to implement a diversification strategy, achieve a sustainable growth and gain a competitive advantage. The study argues for the necessity of establishing a relationship between company profiles and the reasons, advantages and disadvantages of diversification strategy. The findings and recommendations are a valuable source of information and guidance for practitioners, policymakers and researchers. Practical implications Decision-maker practitioners in the construction industry may benefit from the results of this research as a guide during the pre-diversification stage of the decision-making process for implementing the diversification strategy. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first attempt to present the approaches of senior managers of construction companies on reasons for diversification and the relationship between these reasons and typologies, risk attitudes and diversification modes of companies.

An exploratory study of the demand side of firms' non-financial information

PurposeThe purpose of the present study is to investigate the demand side of non-financial reporting, especially integrated reporting. We investigate (1) what type of content the users of online integrated reports access most frequently and (2) whether users search for non-financial content and content that integrated reports must contain to comply with the requirements of the International Integrated Reporting Framework (IIRF).Design/methodology/approachWe perform big data analysis on the log files associated with user access to five online integrated reports over a period of 12 months to investigate what type of information users access most frequently when they visit online integrated reports. Content analysis enabled us to match the usage data (page impressions) to certain topics within the integrated reports. Our analysis, which is based on data reflecting over one million webpage views, indicates which types of integrated-report content attract the users’ attention and which do not.FindingsOur results confirm that integrated reports in general, and specific components in particular, are of significant value to users. In contrast to what other studies suggest, we find no evidence that users seek financial information to a much greater extent than non-financial information. Specifically, our results show that usage between financial and non-financial information is quite evenly distributed and differs depending on the metric under consideration; considering usage by topic impressions financial information is used more frequently, scaling topic impressions by report pages addressing a specific topic, non-financial information displays higher usage. With respect to specific topics, our analysis shows that the topics that attracted most interest from our sample of users are performance, financial statements, company profile and value creation. Furthermore, our findings confirm the importance of integrated reporting from a user perspective.Practical implicationsThe results of our study are of practical value to both standard setters and (potential) preparers for two main reasons: first, they provide user-centric evidence about the importance of non-financial information and empirically confirm that integrated reporting has become widely accepted among users; second, they provide evidence about the topics that are of specific interest for users and therefore should also be considered by preparers and standard setters more carefully.Originality/valueThe present study enriches the literature on financial and sustainability reporting with informative insights into which of the topics that integrated reports contain attract most interest from users. Moreover, our results are based on actual data on the usage of such reports that reflect real user-journeys, rather than on artificial data, created for research purposes.

Exploration of Enterprise Risk: An Analysis of Financial Leverage, Intangible Assets, and Earnings Management Practices.

This research project aims to investigate the impact of financial leverage, intangible assets, and earnings management on corporate risk within the manufacturing sector. The principal objective is to comprehend the manner in which these variables interact and exert influence on the overall risk profile of companies within this pivotal economic sector. Quantitative research methodology, utilizing secondary data sourced from the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The data collection process entails the documentation of financial reports and pertinent metrics, thereby facilitating a comprehensive analysis of the relationships between the identified variables. The application of statistical analysis techniques allows for the assessment of the significance and strength of these relationships, thereby providing insights into the dynamics of corporate risk management. The findings demonstrate that elevated financial leverage is linked to augmented financial risk, as organizations with substantial debt burdens encounter heightened difficulties in fulfilling their obligations during economic downturns. Furthermore, the existence of intangible assets, while potentially advantageous for growth, also introduces an element of uncertainty that can have a detrimental impact on corporate risk. Furthermore, the findings indicate that earnings management practices can distort the accurate representation of a company's financial health, leading to misinformed decision-making by stakeholders. In conclusion, the research highlights the significance of comprehending the interrelationship between financial leverage, intangible assets, and earnings management in the context of corporate risk mitigation. The insights gained from this study can assist management in making informed strategic decisions, thereby enhancing the resilience and sustainability of manufacturing firms in the face of economic challenges.

Integration of Customer Data Management in a Web-Based Fishing Profile Application

The advancement of communication media and technology has driven various business sectors to transform digitally, including fishing businesses in South Tangerang City. However, many fishing businesses still lack adequate information systems to manage company profiles and customer data in an integrated manner. This research aims to analyze, design, and implement a fishing profile website equipped with customer data management features using the Waterfall software development methodology. The waterfall methodology was chosen for its systematic and structured approach, which involves five main stages: requirements analysis, system design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. Optimising iCadet Assignment through User Profiling

Industry Cadetship programme is a programme that assigns penultimate year students to companies matching their profiles, bridging academic learning and industry skills. Manual data analysis for assignments is time-intensive, prompting this study’s objectives: (i) propose an algorithm to optimize student-company assignment by using the student and company profiles, (ii) propose a method for the assignment of lecturers to company, and (iii) use similarity measure techniques to recommend companies with similar characteristics. Data was collected from a university's student, company, and lecturer datasets. To assign students to companies, the Haversine, OpenStreetMap, and NetworkX were used to calculate the shortest geographical distance between the students and the companies; evaluated based on mean, variance, standard deviation, and utilization rate. For the lecturer assignment, cosine similarity was applied to measure the similarity between domain descriptions and company or lecturer information after performing Voyage AI embeddings. Lecturers are assigned to companies based on the highest domain similarity scores. The performance was evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1- score. Findings showed embedding techniques significantly enhanced the matching process, with accuracy improved from 0.464 to 0.6071, precision increased from 0.417 to 0.5058, recall saw an equal rise from 0.464 to 0.6071, and the F1-score advanced from 0.417 to 0.5264. Longer descriptive inputs further improved performance, with accuracy rising from 0.6154 to 0.7692, precision from 0.5744 to 0.7751, recall remaining steady at 0.7692, and F1-score increasing from 0.5807 to 0.7484. This work can be extended to explore job portal dataset by aligning profiles with geography and specialization.

Does CEO power affect the risk profile of acquiring insurance company?

Purpose This study aims to examine, on the one hand, the effect of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) on the evolution of the risk profile of insurance companies and, on the other hand, determine the impact of chief executive officer (CEO) power as well as its determinants on the evolution of the risk profile of the acquiring insurance company. Design/methodology/approach The analysis is based on 131 transactions between 2010 and 2022 involving European Union-based acquirers. To assess the impact of M&A on the acquiring insurance company’s risk profile (RP), the authors compare changes in the acquirer’s RP to control insurance companies. This study uses linear regression with two-stage least squares instrumental variables to examine the effect of CEO power on changes in merger-related risk. Findings The results indicate that M&A significantly increase the RP of the acquiring insurance company. Furthermore, CEO power, as measured by its four proxies (structural, ownership, experience and prestige), is positively correlated with an increase in the RP of the acquiring insurance company. These findings suggest that powerful CEOs tend to take on more risk during M&A transactions in the insurance sector. Practical implications The study’s findings can inform managerial decision-making around mergers and executive incentives. Regulators can use the insights to develop early warning systems and policies to promote financial stability. Insurance firms can enhance their own risk management by assessing the potential M&A impact and designing robust risk governance frameworks. Investors can better evaluate the risk implications of M&A and CEO influence when assessing insurance companies. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first empirical investigation to introduce diverse executive power metrics to analyze the link between executive power and risk-taking in the European insurance sector, with a specific emphasis on the impact on M&A as critical investment choices.

More than software vendors. The peculiar case of Palantir’s data integration platforms

ABSTRACT As digital platforms are increasingly incorporated within the digital apparatus of states in Europe, platformisation needs to be analysed in further detail with reference to both the specificities of the field that is affected, but also the practices of the companies that provide the platforms. This paper, in line with the special issue's focus of data integration and analysis platforms, maintains a two-fold focus on the US-based company Palantir. On the one hand, the paper critically discusses the company's discursive and material practices. Said practices include the construction of a company profile as a supporter and protector of Western values and the provision of their product for “free” for short periods, which both function as an effective entry strategy into sensitive state-run institutions, which are in principle highly regulated. On the other hand, the paper seeks to position data integration platforms in the platformisation discussion, with reference to their peculiar characteristics. Finally, the paper seeks to contribute into a finer breakdown of what is often referred to as “Big Tech” into singular actors, with differentiated practices and strategies on their transformation into quasi-public actors.

The Galician entrepreneurship internationalization matrix: A regulatory framework

This study examines the internationalization strategies of Galician entrepreneurs and SMEs, focusing on early internationalization trends. The main objective is to develop a regulatory framework that enables entrepreneurs and established SMEs to approach foreign markets effectively. From a qualitative approach, the research analyzed data from Galician firms to construct the Galician Entrepreneurship Internationalization (GEI) matrix. Data were collected through surveys and supplemented from the Vigo Free Trade Zone database, covering exporting companies founded between 1999 and 2021. Qualitative analysis and matrix modeling were applied to categorize firms into distinct internationalization stages, considering factors such as market breadth, export intensity, and speed of entry. Four company profiles emerged from the analysis. The findings reveal that newer companies, influenced by technological advances and favorable public policies, tend to internationalize within a year of inception. The GEI Matrix offers valuable insights for public policymakers and business managers aiming to promote early internationalization.
