Distinctive features of a senior’s face from a communicative perspective

This research is the first step of a project concerning a comparative analysis of the image of the elderly present in public space of Warsaw and Berlin. The primary aim of the study was to analyse the seniors’ faces in order to identify the determinants of the corporeal physicality of the human face on the basis of which a given face is classified as belonging to an elderly person. The next goal was to construct an optimal model of the senior’s face based on the set of the recognised determinants. The ultimate objective was to develop a feature- based algorithm which will be used in the objectified process of identifying and categorising faces in terms of age. The algorithm will be further applied in the project regarding visual communication, where messages available in public space should be selected according to the criterion of presenting the elderly. The research method was a diagnostic survey and for the data collection, a survey questionnaire was used as a tool. The work was supported by the National Science Centre, Poland, under the research project “The image of older adults in the public space of Warsaw and Berlin” no UMO-2021/43/B/HS2/01288.

Contemporary Populism and Political Communication in India: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Narendra Modi`s Speech

Populism is a transnational phenomenon that considered as a substantial factor behind the re-orientation of global politics. This article suggests that the qualitative nature of the rhetorical structure employed by different political leaders ostensibly influences their respective political communication. From the perspective of populist communication, this study presents findings from the empirical analysis of Narendra Modi`s Independence Day speech to understand the qualitative aspect of thematic constructs of populism. The phenomenon of populism is taken as a communicative style in which leader employ discursive strategies for constitution of the strong connection with the population. The rise of populism in the contemporary India, along with the enabling factors, put emphasis on the theoretical understanding of populist constructs in the political communication by the Modi. Using the critical discourse analysis, the article identifies articulation of discursive strategies embedded in the speech such as “narrative of slavery”, politics of appeasement, Amrit Kal “Nation First”, and “The People”. The article contributed to academic literature pertaining to mediated populism in the non-western settings that can be interpreted through the lens of leader and people relations.

Politeness and Respect in Indonesian Traditions: An Ethnographic Communication Perspective

This study explores the Mahpangngolo tradition, a ceremonial procession integral to celebrations among the people of Enrekang, Indonesia. The tradition symbolizes community participation and reinforces values of politeness and respect. However, younger generations are increasingly disengaged from such cultural practices, threatening their preservation. An ethnographic communication approach was employed, involving observations, interviews, and documentation. Dell Hymes' SPEAKING model (Situation, Participants, Ends, Act Sequence, Key, Instrumentalities, Norms, Genres) served as the analytical framework for understanding the communicative dimensions of Mahpangngolo. The Mahpangngolo procession emphasizes the symbolic exchange of gifts between guests and hosts. This act is marked by the use of formal and polite language, reflecting mutual respect and community cohesion. Specific expressions by guest representatives and celebration family members underscore the cultural significance of respect and politeness. The findings highlight the Mahpangngolo tradition as a medium for transmitting core values of Indonesian society. Addressing the indifference of younger generations requires initiatives to promote cultural understanding and appreciation. The Mahpangngolo tradition embodies politeness and respect, core values that strengthen communal bonds. Efforts to preserve and promote these traditions are vital for maintaining cultural heritage.

Current Situation of Academic Popular Science Publishing from the Perspective of Mass Communication

With the construction of a learning society and the increasing intensity of social competition, more and more readers wish to acquire specialized and systematic knowledge to deal with real-world problems. However, many readers find academic works obscure and difficult to understand, thus turning to popular science books. These books combine specialized knowledge with public-oriented value, bridging academic knowledge and general readers. At present, multiple publishing houses have launched "light academic" books and even established relevant brands. This paper draws upon some academic works directly related to the research theme as well as the latest online literature and policy documents to summarize the current situation of the popular science academic book publishing market in China.

Brazilian Immigrants’ Stigma Reduction: A Multi-Level Communication Perspective

ABSTRACT The immigration process is associated with experiences of psychological disequilibrium, and as such it is imperative to evaluate immigrants’ mental health. Yet, many immigrants may face stigma that dissuades them from seeking help. This study investigates how Brazilian immigrants in the United States reduce their mental health stigma. In-depth interviews revealed that physical and psychological proximity to new perspectives on mental health (i.e. exposure to individuals with mental illness, a culture with less perceived mental illness stigma, and positive media messages) can impact stigma management communication strategies. These changes occur in intra-, inter-, and mass communication contexts.

Teaching Legal Translation from Intercultural Communication Perspectives: Challenges and Proposed Recommendations

In the international integration era, intercultural communication has become an integral part fostering the globalization process. As a means of communication intermediary within different parts of the world, translation should not only communicate the original message but also support the understanding among partners. Teaching translation from intercultural communication perspectives, therefore, has attracted the attention of educators. This current study endeavors to ascertain the challenges of teaching translation in a context of a Vietnamese law school from the perspective of intercultural communication. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven lecturers of translation to clarify their views on teaching translation during the second semester of the academic year 2023-2024. Interestingly, the result acknowledges the obstacles concerning learners’ insufficient knowledge, their neglect of culture and interculture importance, teaching materials and teaching methods. Based on such findings, several recommendations in terms of raising learners’ awareness, improving teaching content and materials as well as teaching methods were made with the hope of enhancing the teaching and learning translation process in the context of global intercultural communication.

ANALYSIS OF ISLAMIC COMMUNICATION ABOUT OXYMORA CANCEL CULTURE ON VIRTUAL MEDIA IN INDONESIA

Several public figures have controversies, so the public responds negatively. On the other hand, an Islamic communication perspective is necessary to analyze this phenomenon. Therefore, this research aimed to uncover the dynamics and oxymora cancel culture in virtual media in Indonesia, especially in the context of Islamic communication. Using a netnography approach, this study analyses various cases involving public figures such as Ahmad Dhani, Luna Maya, Gisel Anastasya, Rizki Billar, Tuan Guru Mizan Qudsiyah, and Panji Gumilang on the YouTube platform. The study results show that cancel culture in Indonesia reflects social complexity, where religious values face modern demands for social justice. On the one hand, cancel culture functions as a social control mechanism to maintain religious norms and public ethics, providing a role for society in correcting behavior that is considered deviant. On the other hand, this phenomenon risks creating an intolerant environment, limiting the space for forgiveness and improvement, and potentially violating the principles of compassion and justice in Islam. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of Islamic communication in responding to the phenomenon of cancel culture, emphasizing the importance of a wise and contextual approach in integrating religious values and the demands of modernity in the digital space.

Investigating university students' colloquial speech utterances of English in intercultural settings: a case study in Albanian context

In today's world, the widespread use of English, along with student mobility, democratisation, cultural diversity, and the influence of media—especially the Internet—shapes the language environments of higher education institutions from a broad cultural and international communication perspective. This situation is also evident at the University "Ismail Qemali" in Vlore, Albania. The author of this paper researched how English is utilized by both local and foreign students outside the classroom. To gather data, informal conversations were recorded and systematically analyzed using descriptive approaches, statistical modeling, and conversation analysis methods, involving a corpus of 60 students from different native backgrounds (47 local Albanian students and 13 European students). Qualitative and quantitative data were collected to identify phonetic patterns, their occurrences in colloquial speech, and the reasons behind certain linguistic usages or deviations observed in students' "small talk" in multicultural settings. Some participants noted that they are influenced by English and American cultures and lifestyles to varying degrees. Conversely, other students communicated in their native languages while applying basic speech acts that were typical of their original cultural backgrounds. This behaviour illustrated some inconsistencies in phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary. These linguistic deviations reflect how language embodies individual personalities and cultural backgrounds, as speakers adapt their styles and settings in conversation.

A discrete choice experiment: Understanding patient preferences for managing chronic non-cancer pain.

The management of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) is complex. Concerns about adverse effects associated with opioid pain medications and a lack of funding for holistic programs present challenges for decision-making among clinicians and patients. Discrete choice experiments (DCE) are one way of assessing and valuing patient treatment preferences. DCE attributes and levels were generated through qualitative research and included number of medicines, side effects from medicines, pain interference, care management, risk of addiction, activity goals, preferred source of information on pain management and willingness to pay. The survey was administered to participants with CNCP recruited through an existing cohort study (n = 442) and a sample of people living with CNCP recruited through Australia's leading pain advocacy body (Painaustralia) (n = 256). The median age of participants was 58 years (SD 12.0), the majority were female. The analysis revealed two latent demographic classes: a younger group with higher levels of private health insurance and an older group with lower levels of private health insurance coverage. There were notable differences in preference. The younger cohort exhibited a greater willingness-to-pay to reduce pain interference, whereas the older group prioritized GP management, preferred more medicines and expressed fewer addiction concerns. Patients' treatment preferences diverged based on age and insurance status, underscoring the importance of understanding patient perspectives in treatment communication and care coordination. These findings provide insight into patient decision-making, which is important for promoting access to quality healthcare and engagement with evidence-based treatment of CNCP. A discrete choice experiment identified two groups: younger, with more private insurance, and older, with less private health insurance, each with unique pain management preferences. Clinicians should be aware that age and private health insurance may have an impact on a patient's preferences for CNCP management.

Analisis Kalimat "From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free" dalam Perspektif Ilmu Komunikasi

The prolonged conflict between Israel and Palestine has produced various narratives and slogans that reflect aspirations, demands, and resistance, one of which is the phrase “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free.” This slogan is known to have strong political appeal because it holds an explicit message related to Palestinian independence aspirations. From a communication science perspective, it is important to understand how this phrase constructs and communicates meaning and how it is received among diverse audiences. This research aims to analyze the slogan through the perspective of political communication, framing theory, and social identity theory, in order to examine its impact and communication implications in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The research method uses a qualitative approach with literature study as the main method. Data collection is done through documentation techniques on various written sources, which are then analyzed through three steps, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the phrase “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free” is often used in the pro-Palestinian movement as a symbol of freedom aspirations, and serves as an effective communication tool to build identity, mobilize solidarity, and influence public perception regarding complex political issues. The conclusion of this study confirms that the slogan has an important role in shaping political narratives and creating a significant communication impact in the dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Taxonomy of Community Response During Flood Disasters in Jakarta: A Communication Perspective

Jakarta has experienced numerous significant floods since 2002, including those in 2007, 2013, and 2015, a source of concern for the residents of Jakarta. Residents of DKI Jakarta have expressed their concerns regarding the disaster on Twitter and other platforms, which offer a comprehensive account of the flood experiences of Jakarta residents, which is beneficial to stakeholders in the field of flood management. The status of an incident can be rapidly determined using Twitter data. This project investigates the Twitter responses of Jakartans to the flood disaster. The analysis of flood tweets from Jakarta residents is conducted in three phases: 2015, 2020, and 2021. Utilizing topic modeling, this initiative maps emerging topics. Topic modeling is particularly effective in the context of flood issues, as it can assist in the clustering of topics and thedissemination of specific information to the public. Seven modeling-based topic groups are used to organize twenty topics. The results of this project indicate that the majority of Jakartan flood tweets are related to "Weather Report" topics. The findings indicated that "Submerged Houses" has a substantial proportion and is anticipated to increase with each flood. The increasing number of submerged houses in Jakarta should cause concern among the local populace.

Taxonomies and scientific communications: a sociocultural approach to scientific classifications

The idea that there are objective natural species in nature has a long history and continues to be widely accepted. This approach assumes that science directly describes the world by formulating laws of nature based solely on empirical data. However, there are methodological and practical contradictions in the process of constructing taxonomies, such as the impossibility of choosing a single classification criterion or establishing boundaries between taxonomic classes. These issues can be resolved by understanding taxonomies from a communicative and socio-cultural perspective. Taxonomies are fundamental to scientific research, but their development may depend not only on scientific factors but also on societal relevance and interest. Principles based on rigorous methods and experimental practices, which ensure consistency and accuracy in biological and linguistic classification, remain at the heart of taxonomical work. But at the same time, the collaborative processes of developing and applying scientific knowledge, which are characteristic of post-normal science, allow us to make scientifically sound decisions in situations of high risk and uncertainty. External stakeholders are involved in the internal scientific processes and the decision-making process regarding the direction of scientific research. The article, in the form of case studies, using examples such as classifications of pathogen vectors of zoonotic diseases and malaria mosquitoes, and language classification, shows how the structure of science is changing, with external scientific communication, becoming an integral part of the research process. Taxonomic systems are no longer just a card-index, but become a platform for interaction between scientific, social, and linguistic factors, balancing the ideals of classical science with its applicability in the real world.
